Looking for a refreshing start to 2015? The Corporation of Delta is starting the New Year with its 35th annual Polar Bear Swim in Boundary Bay. The New Year’s Day event typically attracts around 300 enthusiastic swimmers, and thousands of onlookers, to Centennial Beach. Festivities begin at 11:45 a.m. with children’s crafts, family activities and enter-
tainment. Registration starts at noon while the swim gets underway at 1 p.m. Swimmers will be cleared from the water as soon as the bell rings. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place swimmers to the bell, the oldest swimmer and the swimmer from furthest away. Registration forms are available at www.delta.ca, which will allow partici-
pants to complete the form in advance and bring it with them to the beach. For those looking for an indoor activity, municipal recreation facilities will offer free swim, skate and weight room workouts on New Year’s Day. Donations of non-perishable food items to the local food bank are appreciated. For more information on New Year’s Day activities and facility hours of operation, visit www.delta.ca.

Over 700 children receive gifts from Toy Depot as the community once again supports Deltassist initiative BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
The East Delta Hall was jam packed with hundreds of presents earlier this month as Deltassist’s annual Toy Depot once again brightens Christmas for local children. Clients visited the hall over three days to pick up the toys, which were donated by groups and individuals throughout the community. Approximately 720 kids received toys this year from the Toy Depot, while Deltassist served at least 770 children overall, notes the social service agency’s Christmas programs coordinator, Christiann Munro. Longtime volunteer Alice Barnes was one of those helping set up for this year’s
depot. “This is part of Christmas. All these people donate toys, they’re thinking of others. Isn’t this a great thing? I just love it.” The Ladner resident says she’s been volunteering at the depot for over 30 years. “Helping others, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? It’s just a wonderful thing to be able to do,” Barnes says. About 100 volunteers

helped out during the three days, says Munro. “The volunteers are essential. I couldn’t do this job without the volunteers.” They put in many hours sorting through all the toys prior to the event, help at the actual depot and then the clean up afterwards. “They do so much,” says Munro. People really step up to support the event, she adds. “When I talk to other Christmas coordinators, I feel so lucky to be part of the Delta community because we get so much support.” A number of groups had crews helping during set up, including Delta firefighters, the 38th Canadian BadenPowell Guild and various businesses.

Scammers target fundraiser The Delta police are warning the public about a possible scam using Tsawwassen teen Kyle McConkey’s pictures and story. “We have a report on this matter and will be looking into it,” reads a post on the Delta Police Department’s Facebook page. The family of McConkey, 18, started a crowdfunding campaign on YouCaring. com last month to help raise money for experimental cancer treatment in Seattle. The campaign has raised over $280,000 so far and the McConkeys are scheduled to travel to the United States next month. Police said the possible scam account appears to have taken pictures directly from McConkey’s legiti-
mate fundraising page. “On the apparently fake site, the names and some spellings are wrong but close enough that anyone not familiar with this story could be duped,” police posted on Facebook. A Facebook post from YouCaring said it has deactivated the apparently fraudulent fundraiser that appeared on its website. “We very much appreciate the help of everyone who helped bring it to our attention,” the post reads. “At the same time, we are also very appreciative of the many, many generous people who have helped Kyle and his family through their legitimate fundraising efforts.” The legitimate fundraiser page can still be found on YouCaring.com.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW South Delta is truly fortunate for the outpouring of goodwill that takes place every holiday season, but this year that kindness seemed extra special. The appeals for gifts to stock Deltassist’s Toy Depot and for food to fill the Christmas hampers put together by a consortium of local service clubs are heeded annually by a caring community. Many other programs and endeavours undertaken at this time of year to ensure everyone’s holiday season is a little, or a lot, brighter are also well supported by members of the public. However, there were several instances in the last month, events that happened to coincide with the season but weren’t necessarily of a holiday theme, that further demonstrated the never-ending compassion of this community. The outpouring of support shown to Tsawwassen teen Kyle McConkey and his family was nothing short of amazing. Parents of the 18-year-old who is battling leukemia were, understandably, willing to do whatever’s necessary to give their child a shot at survival, including possibly mortgaging the family home to pay for experimental treatment in the United States. Before that was necessary, an online campaign was initiated, and within a few days, more than a quarter of a million dollars was raised to cover the cost of the procedure at Seattle Children’s Hospital. There could be no better gift for this community, and for all those who supported the McConkey family, than to learn the treatment Kyle is scheduled to receive in early 2015 has put the insidious disease into remission. Our prayers are with you. I was also touched by the story of a Delta police officer who, with the help of her colleagues, went to great lengths to track down the owner of money found tucked away in a thrift shop treasure. Sgt. Jody Waldron didn’t come looking for attention, and was reluctant to pose for a photo, but when we got wind of what she did to return $1,300 to a Ladner family, there was no way she wasn’t going to be publicly recognized for her good deed. And I don’t want to overlook Dave Lemire, who pounded up and down the stairs at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen for four straight hours to raise $11,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital, or Al Hollinger, who has been extremely generous in his support of Delta Hospital over the years. There are many, many others who give of themselves at this time as well as throughout the year, which is why this community is such a great place to live. Merry Christmas to all.
Christmas spirit alive thanks to the generosity of so many BRAD SHERWIN
COMMUNITY COMMENT It’s Christmas Eve and I couldn’t be happier. The shopping is done and wrapped, thanks to my wife. I’m thankful to her for looking after most of it as I’m more of a last-minute type. That’s why 7Eleven was invented, wasn’t it? There’s a lot to be thankful for this time of year. We have a generous spirit in Delta, both from our wallets and our time. This comes alive in many ways, including the Deltassist Toy Depot and Operation Red Nose. Every year, Deltassist puts out the word about the Toy Depot. Lots of people and companies come together to make donations, and the result is quite overwhelming. You may have seen pictures of what the Toy Depot looks like. The East Delta Hall is filled with the donated items, and the parents of
families who are having a tough time wander through and choose something for their children. As they do, they are always made to feel welcomed, not pitied. They choose their toys, clothes, sports equipment, a couple of books and a stuffie or two and check out, just like at any store. The only difference is no money is exchanged. It seems so small, making a donation, dropping off a toy. I heard of a few people that almost made a competition of buying bikes to donate. Until you see the Toy Depot in person, you’ll never realize the importance of that donation. Not only have you given a child a gift, one they would otherwise not receive, you’ve given their parents a bigger gift — not having to explain why Santa won’t be coming. We can complain about the commercialization of Christmas, which is easy when it’s a choice. When it’s not, you’re just different. That’s not fair to kids. And thanks to you, they won’t feel that way, even if just for a day. People also give with their time. At a time of year when family matters most, many are willing to give their time to make someone else’s

life better. One way is through Operation Red Nose. Volunteering from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. isn’t most people’s idea of fun, but it is. Volunteering is always an adventure as no two nights are the same. You get to meet a lot of people, usually in a pretty good mood after a few drinks, who are always thankful for the service. The highlight for me this year was a couple of young guys heading to Tsawwassen. My navigator, these two guys and I were singing away to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing at the top of our lungs. Fortunately, the navigator had a good voice, given mine is so bad it could crack a mirror in the car beside me. And, of course, the guys thought they were rock stars. They were — they called for a safe ride home. So tomorrow morning, as the gift wrap flies and the smiles come out, know that this Christmas may have been very different for someone, if not for the generosity of the people in our community. A toy for a child, a loved one sitting beside you. That, to me, is what Christmas is all about. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Letters to the Editor
Bayside Club is a jewel that’s worth preserving Editor: Delta’s only squash club is at risk of being lost forever, which would be a terrible shame. Not only does the Bayside Club have Delta’s only squash courts, but it also boasts a weight and cardio gym overlooking Boundary Bay, a kayak and paddleboard base, and hosts many other community functions and clubs looking for space. For those of you who have never been there, the Bayside Squash Club (6788 Corbould Rd.) is on the southeast corner of the Tsawwassen peninsula, bordered by Boundary Bay on one side and Point Roberts on the other. Built in the 1950s, it is one of the original structures in Boundary Bay. Many people might remember picking up some the Lower Mainland’s best fish ‘n’ chips from the take-out window that was on the Point Roberts side of the building or enjoying more than one evening in the dance hall. Early in the 1980s squash
courts were added and the Bayside Squash Club was born. Some of B.C.’s best players have come from the Bayside Juniors program. Every third person I talk to seems to have some old connection to this club. A few years ago the club was sold, and the new owners now want to get it rezoned into two residential lots. With a growing population, this is the wrong choice for Delta. Delta needs to protect its fitness and recreational facilities and this location and facility is truly unique. One more waterfront home will not have nearly the value to the residents of Delta that this club provides. We need your help in letting Delta’s mayor and council know what this building means to you, because the more voices in support of saving the club, the more likely they are to act. Please write a letter, call a councillor or sign the petition to save the club from being rezoned and demolished. If you would like a copy
of the petition to take to your office or sports club, or if you would just like a tour of the club, please email me at lazarus_ben@ hotmail.com. Better yet, come by on a Friday evening for our drop-in squash. All you need to bring is non-marking shoes. We can lend you a racquet and someone will be happy to teach you some basics and play a few games with you. There is a pool table, foosball, darts, waterfront patio and a full kitchen as well, so bring your family along and make a night of it. The rezoning application will go before council in just a few weeks, so please act now to let council know that you support saving this wonderful facility. With New Year’s coming, why not make a resolution to come out every Friday night for an amazing workout followed by an evening with friends? I joined this club three years ago and found a new skill and many new friends. I hope you will come out and join us too. Ben Lazarus
Apparently police officers need to be reminded they’re not above the law Editor: How is it that the Delta police force is allowed to interfere with the prosecution of a fellow police officer for murder? Are not our police supposed to uphold the law and respect legal processes? Those who have been protesting should be fired forthwith, and prosecuted for interfering with a due process of law, and whoever authorized the sale of supportive bracelets should be further punished. It might be different if
these were relatives of a criminal proclaiming the innocence of their relative, but this is a protest by an agency, a member of which has been accused of murder as a result of an independent investigation. Are the police trying to say they are above the law? Are they trying to say the outcomes of independent investigations should be ignored if they don’t like the results? Or are they simply saying they should be free to shoot anyone whom they choose, and not have
to deal with questions concerning their judgment? We have seen far too much of the “cowboy” mentality in policing in recent years, both here and in the U.S. It’s time the police were reminded that deadly force is not something to be used on a whim, to save time or because the situation is inconvenient. I trust the independent investigation and the prosecutor’s office: After this fiasco, I no longer trust the judgment of the police. Don Halward
Inconvenience has given way to efficiency Editor: Re: Almost all trips need a transfer, Murphy’s Law, Dec. 17 I was one of the transit riders who was affected by the change five years ago and forced to transfer from the 601 bus to the Canada Line. Initially I felt it was an inconvenience, but after a couple of months, I realized how much more efficient it
was. As the traffic congestion has grown northbound on the Oak Street Bridge, I find it is a blessing to be able to bypass it all by being on the train. My trips downtown now are consistently shorter — by at least 15 minutes. I may not always get a seat, but just knowing that I won’t be late or stuck in traffic makes it all worthwhile.
The introduction of the Canada Line made me much more of a transit user, not the reverse. It is extremely handy and, in my opinion, a very inexpensive option to driving a car and finding parking. Most people I know who travel by bus from Ladner seem to feel the same way I do. Our park and ride, which is free, is great. Yvonne Thomson

table system to pay for transit improvements remains bridge tolls, says Delta Mayor Lois Jackson. The provincial government gave the go-ahead last week for a referendum on a new tax proposed by the mayors, but only after revising the wording from “sales tax” to something that might be more palatable. Jackson said she voted in favour of the proposed 0.5 per cent “Metro Vancouver congestion improvement tax” at a meeting of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation. The tax would be an addition to the provincial sales tax. The mayors believe it would be the fairest and most affordable funding source because it has a broader base. The mail-in ballot question to be put to the public next spring will read: “Do you support a new 0.5% Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax, to be dedicated to the Mayors’ Transportation and Transit Plan? Yes or No?” The plebiscite will be conducted by Elections B.C. Ballots will be sent out March 16, with votes having to be submitted by May 29. A simple majority of 50 per cent plus one will be considered support. The mayors’ council estimates the tax could generate $250 million in the first year, funding that would help pay for muchneeded improvements. Those upgrades, announced
While Lower Mainland residents are to vote on a funding plan for transit improvements, Mayor Lois Jackson has even bigger hopes that light rail could one day come through South Delta as part of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. earlier this year, included a few items for Delta, mostly more frequent transit, while the big tickets items were light rail for Surrey and a subway in Vancouver. “More buses, more frequent buses, that’s something we’re all looking for here south of the river,” said Jackson. “The statistic on accessibility to frequent transit service is what I’ve been trying to get at for the last 15 years. What do we get south of the river as opposed to what everybody else is getting on the other side of the river?” She’s also hopeful Delta will end up with light rail as part of a system that could eventually hook up with a future Surrey line. She
said the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel could have that capacity built into the structure. “I think it must be there. The drawings are not done, but to me, it would make abundant sense to have a light rail from the SkyTrain in Richmond, out over the bridge, take a spur off at the TFN, the other spur, theoretically, could go all the way out to the freeway and even on to Chilliwack if you wanted to. “It’s good visioning for the future. It’s not going to happen today but as long as they put the ability on that bridge to have light rail, then that will happen one day.” Jackson said the mayors,
as well as the provincial government, still balk at bridge tolls, even though she thinks it would be the fairest way to raise money across the region. “If those tolls were evened out over all the bridges in the Lower Mainland — they’ll all have to be replaced one day — all these improvements have to happen. We all contribute to the infrastructure. You can’t on the North Shore say you won’t help pay for the new bridge down here because the Lions Gate will have be to be upgraded or replaced one day.” She noted tolls would have to be set at a standard rate, not more than 50 cents or a dollar.

Call it the storm before the calm. If I want to enjoy myself tomorrow — and yes, I do — there are a few things I’ll have to take care of today. I know most of you feel the same. You want to chill on Christmas morning. You want to stay in your PJs till two. You want to do nothing more taxing than to open the gifts, put on the carols, and sip on some champagne and OJ. That means that on Christmas Eve, you’re doing anything but relaxing. I know this because when I head to the town centre today to pick up last-minute groceries, lastminute stocking stuffers, last-minute boughs of holly, last-minute candy canes, last-minute bags of ice and last-minute bottles of wine, I’ll see you there too. You’ll be trailing folks as they exit
the mall, then jockeying for their parking spots. Such fun, the Christmas storm! Today, in no particular order, I will sweep the floor, polish the silver, set the table, make the stuffing, hang the stockings, wipe down the bathrooms and dust the living room. Oh, and then I’ll start in on the make-ahead potatoes, the make-ahead carrots, the make-ahead beets and the make-ahead Brussels sprouts. And the make-ahead morning frittata. If I can manage it, I might find time for a shower. I will also put the husband to work. “Would you please set up a fire?” I will ask at some point today. “And then make me a rum and egg nog?” The Christmas storm, as most of you know, continues all day long. On Christmas storm day, one rarely has the opportunity to lounge around with a stack of magazines, a half dozen movies or a pile of
board games. Tomorrow, the son and I will play some crib. But certainly not today. Today, I will be up early, and at it after the sun’s gone down. And chances are, I’ll run into a few familiar storm chasers as I go about the race. We will bump into one another as we run around the drug store or the liquor store or the bakery or the supermarket, our faces flushed, our foreheads damp, our arms sore and overloaded. We will holler hello, have a brief, but speedy conversation, and do the Christmas hug thing. And then we will carry on, making our way toward the eye of the Christmas storm, determined to get in and out the other side before Santa’s set for takeoff. All is calm on Christmas Day. Today’s an utter gong show. Let me take this opportunity to wish every one of you the best of the season and a happy, healthy new year.

Members of Delta Secondary’s Interact Club provided a gift wrapping service out of Port Metro Vancouver’s community office in Ladner’s Trenant Park Square last Saturday. It was the second straight Saturday the club offered the service and students estimated that over the two days they wrapped “hundreds” of gifts and raised more than $1,000.

Record attendance for Christmas dinner Ladner Community Kitchen serves about 100 at annual community gathering Community spirit was alive and well in Ladner last week at the sixth annual Ladner Community Kitchen Christmas Dinner. “We had a record attendance of about 100 people,”
says Jini Aroon, founder of the kitchen, which operates as an arm of the South Delta Food Bank. Aroon says about 25 volunteers from the community helped out at the
event, which was held last Monday night at the Ladner Christian Fellowship. Delta police Chief Jim Cessford and deputy Chief Lyle Beaudoin were on hand to help serve the tradi-
tional turkey dinner. Diane Hanson led the carols while Pat Rogers accompanied on piano. Delta Police Pipe Band piper John Ralston also played.
“It was really wonderful support,” says Aroon. The event was open to all food bank recipients and anyone else in the community who would appreciate a Christmas dinner.
Merry Christmas At this special time of the year, we at Westshore Terminals wish all in our community a very Merry Christmas. We live in one of the nicest communities in one of the best countries on the planet. It’s time to pause and reflect on all the gifts and blessings we do enjoy compared to others. And take a moment to help someone less fortunate. You’ll feel good and so will they.

Cookies … Milk… Smoke Alarm!
• Smoke Alarms
This Christmas, give your family and friends a gift that saves lives ... a smoke alarm. Most fatal fires take place at night, while you and your family are asleep - when seconds can make the difference between life and death. If you have one or more working smoke alarms in your home you double your chances of surviving a fire. Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. And a caution ... Never borrow a battery from a smoke alarm for use in a toy or gadget!

It was an assembly line of kindness earlier this month at Fishermen’s Hall in Ladner as volunteers with Women Helping Women put together gift bags for women in need throughout the region. The local group began in 2010 when it collected personal and pampering items for 52 gift bags. This year it filled 560 bags.
SCAN WITH
Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the holiday season. They can also be a source of fire in your home, so be cautious with them. Place candles in non-tip candle holders and ensure they are well away from the Christmas tree and other holiday decorations. Never leave lit candles unattended and ensure that they are out of reach of children!
Merry Christmas
www.deltafire.ca 604-946-8541 • Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights
Most Christmas fires can be prevented. If purchasing a live-cut tree, test it for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground. If needles fall or can be pulled off easily the tree is too dry. AT home, find a cool spot for your tree, away from heater vents and the fireplace. Keep your tree as fresh as possible by watering it often. You can also reduce the risk of fire by installing cooler mini lights, or the new LED type lights. Inspect your strings of lights for wear or damage. If Interior/exterior lights are worn or frayed replace them. Never leave the lights on while you sleep or are away from the home. Limiting the use of warm lights also helps to extend the freshness of a live-cut tree!

• Kitchen Fire Safety
Practice fire safety in the kitchen this holiday season. Never leave cooking food unattended and if you are faced with a grease fire, remember - put a lid on it and turn the heat source off! Always turn pot handles to the back of the stove so pots won’t be pulled or knocked off. If you don’t already own a kitchen fire extinguisher… DON’T WAIT! Get one now as a pre-season gift for your whole family! Enjoy the holidays and stay fire safe!
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL CUSTOMERS, Enjoy your lovely homes and we wish you all peace and happiness.

Santa cozied up with a variety of animals at the Pets-N-Us in Tsawwassen earlier this month, posing for a whopping 130 photos. All donations from the annual undertaking went to SAINTS Rescue, an end-of-life sanctuary in Mission for senior and special needs animals that have nowhere else to go. Pets-N-Us is very active in the rescue world and advocates against the unnecessary breeding, buying and selling of animals while there are so many wonderful animals waiting in shelters.

The Night Before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed
with Nelson’s service and price And I thought of his crew who are always so nice. I think that I’ll call them that old Nelson crew And place one last order Yes, that’s what I’ll do.
As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer!
May the Peace & the Beauty of this Festive Season accompany you throughout all of 2015?
“What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?” Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...
Que la Paix et la Beauté de la Saison des Fêtes vous accompagnent tout au long de l’année qui vient!
“Merry Christmas to All, and to all a Good Night!” Wishing You A Merry Christmas & A Prosperous New Year. “Let us never forget WHO we celebrate CHRISTmas for.”

Champions getting plenty of attention University football programs showing lots of interest for South Delta Sun Devils talent after run to B.C. AAA crown BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
Head coach Ray Moon is still basking in his team’s provincial championship win and at the same time fielding plenty of inquiries about his football players. The South Delta Sun Devils’ memorable run to the AAA title has generated lots of interest from university programs across the country. Some players were already considered top prospects and the team’s post-season performance has added plenty more to the list. Provincial all-star quarterback Lucas Kirk, who threw for six touchdowns in the 55-30 championship game win over Mt. Douglas, and MVP Jack McDonald are going to have their choice of where to play. “Lucas and Jack have both received multiple offers,” said Moon. “Schools are also very interested in Blake (Gau) and Bryce (Connors). They also like Thomas (Franklin) as a receiver with his size and speed. I also think Gord (Cooper) is going to get the same opportunity as a receiver. “What’s also very interesting is I’m getting calls about our Grade 11 and even our Grade 10 players who they can’t even talk to yet.” Both Kirk and McDonald said post-game they were still exploring their options
and were uncommitted to any school. However, that hasn’t stopped some from stepping up their pursuit of the pair and then some. According to Moon, the University of Guelph is arranging to fly in Kirk, McDonald, Gau and Connors for a tour of the campus. Other Ontario schools in the hunt include University of Toronto and Western University where SDSS grad and current Saskatchewan Roughrider Dylan Ainsworth enjoyed an outstanding career. There are also opportunities to play closer to home in the Canada West Conference. Among the Grade 11s on university coaches’ radar are Ryan von Ende and Wyatt Bates who were part of young South Delta offensive line that did an outstanding job all season. Last week, Von Ende was named to the U18 B.C. team that will be competing in this weekend’s Tanoa Bowl in Auburn, Wa. The event will also feature competition from Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii. In the meantime, coaches and returning players have about another month’s worth of rest before preparation for the 2015 campaign begins. The offseason program includes weight training three days a week and skill sessions that will head outdoors in April. “We could start the season right now with the kids we have coming back,” said Moon. “The key will be what kind of depth we have

Provincial all-star quarterback Lucas Kirk’s running and throwing ability have generated multiple offers from university programs. He is just one of several South Delta Sun Devils getting attention from CIS schools. which is so important to compete at the AAA level and the big part of our success this season.” The Sun Devils will have some more excellent tal-
ent coming up from a the community Bantam Rams program which went undefeated in route to the B.C. title this season. He also no longer has to worry about
potentially losing local kids to other programs. “When I first came here, there were 12 (South Delta) kids playing at Vancouver College,” Moon recalls.
“This year there were two. We think it’s pretty good option to stay here to play football.” The record speaks for itself.

Islanders get jump on ’98 born talent Even with a wheelbarrow load of top end picks in next month’s B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League midget draft, the Delta Islanders have jumped the gun on acquiring elite 1998-born talent. The club completed a three-way deal with Nanaimo and Burnaby, receiving the playing rights to Tavin Gant and Davis Goodman. Initially, Islanders assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie sent Connor Leies to Nanaimo for Mitch McDole and future considerations. McDole, an 18-year-old Maple Ridge native who won the B.C. Intermediate “A” scoring title last season, was then flipped to Burnaby. Rennie had targeted Gant for sometime. The 16-year-old had 14 points in seven
games playing for Team B.C. at last summer’s Midget Nationals. The standout athlete also thrives in the field version of the game and is currently in his rookie season in the Western Hockey League as a goalie with Prince George. Goodman, a 17-year-old product of Semiahmoo Minor Lacrosse, was among the top picks of last year’s Midget Draft. The Islanders head into the 2015 draft with six of the top 13 picks. The draft is for graduated midget talent who played for associations not affiliated with B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League teams,
