Liberal Carla Qualtrough easily tops Conservative cabinet minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay in federal election BY JESSICA KERR & SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta has a new member of Parliament. Liberal Carla Qualtrough easily defeated Conservative cabinet minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay to capture the new riding of Delta in Monday’s federal election. With all 214 polls reporting, Qualtrough was more than 9,000 votes ahead of Findlay after garnering 49.3 per cent of the popular vote. Findlay, who was the minister

of national revenue, saw her support drop to just 32.7 per cent. Voter turnout in Delta topped 75 per cent, although that number is expected to drop slightly once voters who registered on election day are factored in. Qualtrough was one of 184 Liberals elected across the country to give the party a majority government. More than 100 jubilant supporters packed into Qualtrough’s Scott Road campaign headquarters Monday night, chanting her name as she took to the podium to make

The winds of change certainly blew through Delta Monday as voters elected Carla Qualtrough, the area’s first Liberal MP in almost 50 years. South Delta has not seen Liberal representation in Ottawa since Tom Goode was elected in 1968. “At that time there was a young, brilliant man named Trudeau who became prime minister and it’s that way again tonight it would seem,” Qualtrough said to a crowd of more than 100 supporters who gathered at her Scott Road campaign office Monday night. Goode was defeated by John Reynolds and the Progressive Conservatives in 1972, which was followed by more than 40 years of representation under various right-wing parties, including Reform, the Canadian Alliance and the Conservatives. Thanking her family, volunteers and supporters, Delta’s new MP said she is looking forward to setting up shop in the riding. “I promise you all I will work very hard as a member of Parliament for Delta. We’re going to have a new style of business here,” she said. “My door

I hope it inspires young girls in particular with disabilities to dream big because I had this dream and I’ve achieved it thanks to a lot of support and help.” Following her historic victory, Qualtrough said she was feeling contemplative. “I’m feeling thoughtful. This has been an incredible journey, we’ve achieved great things here for Delta, I think. We’ve achieved a new path for our community and for our riding. We’ve not only united Delta but we’ve given it a vision for hope and a vision for change and a progressive vote coalesced around the Liberal Party and I am thrilled, just thrilled.” And after 11 weeks of campaigning, the real work begins. “It’s humbling because

it’s a huge responsibility. I’ve seen the job and I know the work that’s involved but I think that South Delta wanted change,” Qualtrough said. “I mean, clearly they did. They said that tonight but it’s what we’ve been hearing on the doorsteps for months.” She said the support was quiet at first, but became louder as the campaign went on. “It’s been this progression in the confidence of a non-Conservative vote, that it’s OK to not vote Conservative in South Delta.” Despite a seemingly growing support, Qualtrough said she was nervous going into election night. “I was really nervous. I didn’t take any of this for granted. I did not know what the outcome of tonight would be at all. We did our best,” she said. “We had a game plan, we ran a positive campaign. The results happened tonight.”

Defeated incumbent says it was honour to serve Delta

Kerry-Lynne Findlay manages a smile as she addresses supporters at the East Delta Hall.

It was an honour serving Delta. Her voice trembling, defeated first-term Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay had that to say to a clearly disappointed crowd of about 100 supporters and media at the East Delta Hall Monday night. Findlay, who was first elected in 2011 with a whopping 54 per cent of the vote in Delta-Richmond East, saw her fortunes take a drastic turn on election night as she lost by a wide margin in the race for the

newly reconfigured Delta riding. Surrounded on stage by family and friends, including Mayor Lois Jackson, Findlay said she’s proud of what her government has accomplished as well as what she’s been able to do for Delta. “But the electorate has spoken. We have to understand that in a democracy it doesn’t always work out the way some of us think it will. But it is, in fact, an honour to be part of this great democracy, this great country of which I’m so proud,” she said. Findlay said she had been looking forward to

serving all of Delta. Thanking her volunteers and supporters, she also said she has “a love in my heart for this community” and, if nothing else, that will be her lasting legacy. Findlay personally called victorious Liberal candidate Carla Qualtrough as well as NDP candidate Jeremy Leveque to congratulate them on running good campaigns. A lawyer who moved to Ladner after winning the seat four years ago, she quickly ascended through the ranks to become minister of national revenue. Coun. Ian Paton, who was at the East Delta Hall,

said Findlay had done much for the municipality, including bringing in funding and arranging important meetings between municipal and key federal officials. Brad Cooper, president of the local electoral district association, said Findlay put Delta back on the map.

Voters expected closer race in new riding Polling stations busy with 75 per cent turnout in Delta, but nail-biter that many anticipated didn’t materialize BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta voters turned out at the polls in large numbers Monday expecting a close race that never materialized. The Optimist talked to dozens of voters at polling stations in North Delta and South Delta, the vast majority of whom thought the outcome in the reconfigured riding of Delta would come down to the wire. In the end, Liberal Carla Qualtrough was more than 9,000 votes clear of Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Voter turnout was 75 per cent, although that number doesn’t include voters that registered on election day so the actual turnout will be slightly lower. Most of the voters who were willing to talk to the Optimist outside Gibson Elementary in North Delta said they thought the race would be much closer than previous elections. Ron and Cheryl Miller said they’d be voting for the same party they voted for in the last election and didn’t see any reason to change. They said they

didn’t see the Conservatives dominating in South Delta as previous years and that it was uncertain what would happen in their community. With his voting card in hand, Taylor Mah said this year’s federal election seemed certainly more contentious. He said now that North Delta and South Delta are together he was hopeful things would change. “I think it might be a bit better representation now that all of Delta is together, instead of Delta and parts of Surrey or Richmond,” he said. Saying this year’s election was probably the most interesting and riveting in a long time, Sonny Walia also said he got the sense this year’s race in Delta would be close. At Tsawwassen’s Pebble Hill Elementary voting station, several who arrived but didn’t want their names published agreed this year’s race seemed more contentious. One voter remarked they would be sticking with the Conservatives but that it might be a much closer race for Findlay this time around.

Sandra Kirk was one of more than 55,000 Delta residents to cast a ballot in Monday’s federal election. Several said they got the sense there would be a change in South Delta, where voters usually supported the Conservatives by a wide margin. Rick Campbell said he got the feeling from his circle that things could be changing in South Delta as well as North Delta. At what was a busy Holly Elementary voting station in East Ladner, it was more of the same with people saying it was a much more riveting election, both nationally and locally, and that it looked like it might

be a close one in Delta. When asked if she thought things could change, one voter said boldly, “Oh yes!” Lori McLean, meanwhile, said the large number of people who went out to vote at the advance polls was a good indicator there was a lot of interest. McLean added North Delta would make things interesting. Sandra Kirk, who recently moved to Ladner, said it seemed like a contentious race both locally and nationally. “I just know that it’s 53 YEARS SERVING DELTA

Voters embrace change, but not necessarily NDP BY

New Democrat candidate Jeremy Leveque said the majority of Canadians were hungry for change this election, however many were not interested in what the NDP had to offer. “People desperately wanted change. why I put my name in the ring because I wanted to be the agent of that change… We ran the best campaign that we could, we stood on our principles and we made Canadians a serious offer and unfortunately for us they chose to go with another offer, but that’s democracy.” Support for the NDP slipped nationally as well as here in Delta. Leveque garnered just 15 per cent of the vote, coming in third behind Liberal Carla Qualtrough and Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay. In 2011, NDP candidate Nic Slater ran second to Findlay in Delta-Richmond East and the party made up the official Opposition

by winning 103 seats. This time the party won just 44 seats. Leveque, a long-time party member, said the NDP will now have four years to connect with Canadians. “Today is election day of the 42nd election but it’s the start of the 43rd election if nothing else,” he said Monday night. Leveque had praise for Qualtrough. “She and I may disagree on things in terms of policy but she was an honourable competitor and I think she will make an excellent member of Parliament for Delta,” he said. Green Party candidate Anthony Devellano garnered just three per cent of the vote.

Student vote mirrors election outcome 26 Delta public and private schools hold parallel election as part of nationwide initiative BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta students voted for a Liberal government. Students at Delta’s public and private schools, including 26 public secondary and elementary schools, took part in a parallel federal voting process known as Student Vote, a nationwide initiative that saw almost every federal electoral district participate. It’s aimed at teaching students about elections and the voting process firsthand to build the habits of an informed and engaged citizenship. Civics and social studies classes studied campaign platforms and literature, with every student in the participating schools getting a chance, if they wanted, to cast a ballot, which were identical to what their parents would see on election day. Delta Secondary saw a strong turnout last Thursday and Friday as students selected a representative from among the four candidates in the newly reconfigured riding of Delta. Those results combined

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW What seemed unfathomable not that long ago became reality Monday. Although this area had been represented by a right-of-centre MP for as long as most people can remember, the vibe around here as the marathon federal election campaign lurched toward a merciful conclusion had a decidedly un-Conservative feel. The more people I talked to, and the more indicators I came across, it became increasingly apparent that a Liberal victory was possible. As I mentioned in this space last week, I initially had a difficult time wrapping my head around the idea of a Conservative defeat given the party’s margin of victory in recent elections, but it was hard to ignore a growing sentiment that four decades of Conservative/ Reform representation could well be coming to an end. The way in which it did was quite surprising, however, as I don’t think even the biggest Liberal boosters envisioned the substantial margin of victory ultimately enjoyed by new MP Carla Qualtrough, who received almost 50 per cent of the vote compared to just 32.7 per cent for incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Monday’s result here and elsewhere in the country was definitely a rebuke of Stephen Harper, but the Conservatives still managed to win 99 seats and capture 32 per cent of the popular vote, so it wasn’t like the party was decimated by any means. Locally, however, it most certainly suffered a body blow. We’re dealing with different riding boundaries, but it’s hard not to point to the precipitous drop in support for Findlay from the whopping 54 per cent she received as a newcomer four years ago. This time around her party was down about eight per cent across the board, but she lost almost triple that amount. Although she was a well-respected cabinet minister in charge of the national revenue portfolio, there was a definite sense among voters that she was representing Ottawa’s interest here, not Delta’s interests in our nation’s capital. There’s no doubt she had pull in Conservative circles as was evidenced by the pre-writ spending spree around here, but as much as she tried to convince voters she stood up for them and their issues, I don’t think that message ever really took hold. And when provided with a viable alternative in Qualtrough, an articulate human rights lawyer who pressed the right buttons by campaigning as a strong voice for Delta, one who would genuinely listen to their concerns and champion their causes, voters were quick to jump ship.

High-tech farming is looking pretty good as a career path ML BURKE

COMMUNITY COMMENT Quote: “The trouble with energy farming is that the energy isn’t always where you want to use it, and it isn’t always when you want to use it.” — Bill Gates I attended the Kee Philosophers’ presentation recently titled Greenhouse Growers – Is Agriculture Sustainable? The presenter was Ron Moes from Windset Farms who gave an informative overview of this developing industry. We had ample time to ask questions, which Moes answered in a straightforward manner. It costs about $1 million per acre to set up the infrastructure for a greenhouse operation. There are 60 greenhouses in B.C., ranging in size from two to 109 acres for a total of 755 acres. Canada has greenhoused 3,300 acres compared to the U.S. with only 1,300 acres. Although Ontario has the highest number of greenhouses, Moes said Delta has the best growing conditions of anywhere in Canada. It’s all about sunlight and length of the growing season.

Windset sells internationally to the U.S., Japan and Saudi Arabia. It is a $1.3 billion industry in Canada. Crops currently include tomatoes, peppers, cukes, lettuce, eggplant and, recently, strawberries. Strawberries are a challenge as consumers seem to prefer the large California berries as opposed to our smaller, but much tastier, berries. Moes hopes, with marketing, this U.S. mindset of “bigger is better” will change. He also acknowledged that greenhouse tomatoes have less flavour than the old way of growing. He personally grows his own heirloom varieties at home but explained they do not last long because sunlight turns them mushy quicker. Queried about marijuana, yes, that too could be a crop. Issues such as light pollution, trucks, spraying and power sources brought these responses. Lights are turned off between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., which is why you might see a bright pink sky in the middle of the night, especially with low clouds. As to birds, studies have shown there has been minimal impact on migrations as towns and cities have a much greater effect than greenhouses. During the summer there could be 30 to 40 trucks a day moving products. I imagine this is an ongoing source of contention for their

neighbours. Windset spends about $1 million a year on bug control. It doesn’t use insecticides, preferring to use good bugs to get rid of bad bugs. Insecticides would also eliminate the good bugs. Their systems are controlled by computers and buildings are powered by natural gas. They recirculate water, extract CO2 that plants like and use precision drippers. This industry is labour-intensive and it is it is hard to find locals who want to do the job, which is why they have to bring in about 30 per cent of their labour force from Mexico and Guatemala. They start at minimum wage but incentives and bonuses are offered so those who are motivated and hard-working can make much more. Windset is looking for people, especially those with a green thumb. It is a developing industry that can grow year around and produce 10 to 20 times the amount of food compared to the same acreage in traditional farming. Trending are rooftop greenhouses in cities and growing food in remote northern regions. High-tech farming is looking pretty good as a career path. October 21, 2015 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Protecting mature trees is long-term thinking that benefits everyone Editor: Re: Delta should treasure our trees, not cut them down, letter to the editor, Oct. 7 I share Vicki Huntington’s views. It is truly baffling that our municipality and the Delta Street business owners do not see the value in keeping the mature trees lining Delta Street and, instead, support the policy of cutting them down as soon as they are deemed inconvenient. I have lived in and walked around Ladner Village for more than two decades and I find Michael Rudd’s (in his letter to the

editor of Oct. 9) characterization of the sad and potentially dangerous state of Delta Street sidewalks to be overstated. Certainly some management of the sidewalks is necessary due to the mature tree roots growing underneath. And, as Rudd pointed out, this is done on a regular basis. I note the municipality has been, in some sections, trying out that rubberized pavement alternative, and this seems to be working well. It is short-sighted not to recognize the benefits of these trees lining Delta Street far outweigh their inconveniences. These ben-

efits include: shade, charm, colour, vibrancy, carbon for improved air quality, and offering resting and nesting places for our neighbourhood birds and small creatures. Like Huntington, I believe every effort should be made to protect the mature trees in all parts of our community. Some of these trees along Delta Street must be 40 years old (or older) and if treated properly, they will grace us with their presence far longer than any of the businesses currently on Delta Street. If removed and replaced by young trees, Delta Street

will not be the same for a very long time. I hope Delta has actively sought out and considered the opinions of many interest groups within this community regarding this issue rather than just those of the Delta Street businesses. These mature trees are essential to the charm of Delta Street. They are a major reason why our village attracts local visitors, tourists and the film industry. Valuing and protecting mature trees throughout this community is long-term thinking that is beneficial to us all. Theresa Bamford

Coalition formed to stop Point Roberts radio towers is great example of how to correctly conduct campaign

Editor: Re: Judge rejects appeal over radio towers, Oct. 9 Kudos to the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers. They showed us how the populace of representative

democracies should properly interact with those elected and appointed to make decisions for them. They did so facing issues greatly complicated by international boundaries and interests.

Their approach was all about persuasion based upon fact and reason. Obstructionist tactics we so often suffer — rowdiness, sit-ins and in-your-face confrontations — were avoided and racial overtones non-

Improvements planned as a result of malls long overdue

Editor:

Re: Strategy already in works, Oct. 7 Why does it take a drastic upheaval like the new malls for the community (including municipal hall) to make changes that should have been started a long time ago? If there wasn’t the money for it before, where will it come from now? Looking forward to seeing Ladner and Tsawwassen get spruced up, including having the roads redone. It’s way past due. Worried new mailbox to bring litter

Editor: Re: Canada Post is poised to install community boxes, Oct. 16 One of these impending community mailboxes will soon be making its way to my lot. My one fear associated with it is the possibility of litter. The file photo accompanying the story shows a community mailbox with litter underneath. Is this the best photo you could find? In the process of paving paradise

Editor: Countdown back on for malls, Oct. 14 The recent article featuring the upcoming Tsawwassen Mills mall has a line that states the paving of the 6,000-stall parking lot is well underway. Joni Mitchell nailed

it many years ago when she sang, “Pave paradise, put up a parking lot.” That is exactly what is happening. One of the world’s most productive farmlands is now buried under asphalt. This is progress? Peter Nemeth

EdCamp Delta empowers education stakeholders

Everyone’s voice matters at annual ‘unconference’ Casually gathered within a classroom at Sands Secondary in North Delta, a group of students, parents and teachers discuss what students really need to learn in school. The conversation flows naturally, with everyone having an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about education. “The most powerful thing about EdCamp is that students, teachers and parents are all on the same level — everyone’s voice matters and we are all here to learn together,” said Aaron Akune, principal at Sands and an organizer of EdCamp Delta. Now in its fifth year, EdCamp Delta is billed as

Attendees choose the agenda at EdCamp Delta by suggesting topics and then voting on them. an “unconference.” A typical conference consists of a pre-determined line-up of sessions and speakers, with speakers usually lecturing to an audience. EdCamp, on the other hand, allows the attendees to determine and facilitate topics. The day begins with attendees suggesting session topics and voting on them. From there, the most popular sessions are selected and a schedule for the day is created. At this year’s EdCamp Delta, which took place earlier this month, roughly 175 attendees narrowed down topics to 28 sessions, everything from collaboration and diversity to

environmental content and preparing students for the real world. Within each session people shared and engaged in conversations aimed at deepening understanding of the topics. The goal is that via collaborative learning, ideas and best practices will develop and evolve. “EdCamp is really empowering for our students. It provides a platform for student voice. Plus it connects our educators to students, to parents and to colleagues in way that enables meaningful professional growth,” said Neil Stephenson, director of learning services for the Delta school district.

Kilimanjaro conquered in Ascent for Alzheimer’s

Tsawwassen husband and wife team raises $24,000 BY

Lisa Heiberg and Doug Spencer successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro last month to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer’s. The Tsawwassen husband and wife team took part in Ascent for Alzheimer’s, a seven-day climb up and down Africa’s tallest mountain. “It’s quite the experience when you make it up there. It’s really cool,” said Spencer. It was dark outside for the first six or seven hours of the hike on their summit push. “You leave at 11:30 at night. All you see is a long trail of headlamps that go into what looks like infinity,” said Heiberg. “Then when you’re getting close to the top, you see the sunrise coming up.” Their group had eight climbers, a climb leader and a support group of over 30 cooks, porters and guides. The trek was physically tough and the pace was

They were able to raise about $24,000. He said they got very good local support while fundraising.

The cause is of special significance to the couple as Spencer’s father died last August after a multi-year battle with the disease. The couple, who are both police officers, also deal with Alzheimer’s sufferers frequently through their jobs. For more on Ascent for Alzheimer’s, visit http:// ascentbc.ca/.

Kwantlen honours bog advocate Eliza Olson First and only president of the Burns Bog Conservation Society is the recipient of honourary degree

If Burns Bog has a saviour, it’s Eliza Olson. The first and only president of the long-established Burns Bog Conservation Society, Olson has worked tirelessly for more than 25 years, with minimal resources, to provide advocacy and education on the bog’s importance to the region’s flora and fauna, to the bird population of the entire continent and to the overall ecology of the Fraser delta. She received an honourary degree from Kwantlen Polytechnic University last month in

front of hundreds of graduates, many of whom have likely been alive for less time than Olson has been fighting for Burns Bog. “She has persistently stood up to protect Burns Bog and the region’s wetlands from further encroachment,” said Dr. Alan Davis, president and vice-chancellor of KPU. Davis said Olson represents the very best in sustained and dedicated service to the region, and he notes that much of her work aligns with KPU’s programming and scholarly interests.

For her part, Olson was thrilled to get the call from Davis a few weeks ago that she’d been named to receive an honourary doctorate; it took days for the good news to sink in. “Not bad for a little kid from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, right?” she laughed. In 1988, Olson became the founding president of the Burns Bog Conservation Society and in so doing engaged the broader community, government and various service agencies in discussions about the future of the largest raised peat

bog on the west coast of North America. These initial discussions and the years of advocacy that followed ultimately resulted in the purchase of more than 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of Burns Bog by four levels of government in 2004. The purchase ensures the bog is protected and managed effectively as a natural ecosystem. “Our organization, as small as it is, is probably the largest of its kind in B.C., and perhaps Canada, that focuses on peatlands,” said Olson. “Because peatlands only cover three per SUBMITTED PHOTO

‘Garage-less’ garage sale at church Saviour Lutheran Church in Ladner is hosting a “Garage-less” garage sale this Saturday. The church’s aim is to offer nearby residents the chance to sell some of their gently-used goods at a spacious and friendly venue and the opportunity to meet some of their neighbours. The sale takes place rain or shine. The church previously held a “Garage-less” garage sale in May with items like

a rowing machine, clothing, knickknacks, tools, fishing gear, plants, jewelry, books and furniture accessories up for grabs. The garage sale is set to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church is located at 4737-57th St. (across from Delta Manor). For more information, or to arrange to have a table to sell items, call 604-9462112 or email saviourlutheran@gmail.com. Set-up begins at 8 a.m.

For many of us, Halloween is a time to get dressed up in a great costume, let loose and have fun, but it is easy to forget this time of year can be challenging for individuals with different physical, developmental, medical, emotional and mental abilities. Several factors, such as a heightened sensitivity to themes circulating around Halloween, dietary restrictions around treats and snacks, mobility challenges in visiting homes in the community or sensory issues involving light, touch and noise can get in the way of traditional house-tohouse trick or treating. To accommodate these needs and welcome everyone to participate in Halloween celebrations, Ladner Baptist Church is hosting its annual Connect Halloween Carnival for families of individuals of all ages with mental, physical, medical, developmental and emotional abilities. Accessible carnival games, activity stations and

Caring for our Community

Ladner resident Brenda Holland was admitted to Delta Hospital on December 28th, 2006, with a cerebral aneurism. Brenda spent many days at Delta Hospital and then underwent rehab, however, when complications developed, doctors discovered an inoperable tumour. One year later to the date of her first admission, she was admitted once again with the cancer that would eventually take her life on January 6th, 2008. George Holland, her loving husband of 47 years described Brenda as outgoing and hard working. “We had a lot of fun,” says George, describing the times they would share with friends and family at their weekend home on Pender Island. As a long term supporter of Delta Hospital, George wanted to give back to his community. He wanted to acknowledge the hospital and medical team that supported Brenda, and to create a fitting legacy in loving memory of his wife. This is why George has made a generous gift of over $86,000 in memory of Brenda, to the Results: Healthy & Growing Campaign to expand and enhance Delta Hospital’s Medical Imaging and Laboratory Departments. “We provide loving care for your Canine & Feline Friends”

THANK YOU

for the privilege of serving the last 4½ years as your Member of Parliament.

Small and medium-sized businesses are the cornerstone of the Canadian economy. They account for 99.9 per cent of all Canadian companies and employ close to 90 per cent of private sector workers. For 36 years, the Business Development Bank of Canada has organized BDC Small Business Week in recognition of the contributions and achievements of Canada’s entrepreneurs. Events held during the week bring entrepreneurs together at conferences, luncheons and trade fairs across the country where they have the opportunity to learn, network and enjoy themselves in the company of their peers. BDC Small Business Week activities provide an opportunity to celebrate, develop new skills, make new contacts and plan for

new opportunities. BDC Small Business Week 2015 takes place Oct. 18 to 24 under the theme KNOCK DOWN BARRIERS. DARE TO GROW. Daring to grow is never an easy task. Inevitably, there are barriers that need to be knocked down as entrepreneurs navigate the path to success. Confronting challenges is essential if they want to play in today’s competitive global environment. It is not only about having the will, but also about having the tools and resources to do so, both financial and non-financial. BDC Small Business Week 2015 is a time to acknowledge the important impact of Canada’s business community and to encourage entrepreneurs to knock down barriers and dare to

grow. BDC Small Business Week is a Business Development Bank of Canada trademark whose origins date back to 1979 when BDC business centres in B.C.’s lower Fraser Valley pooled their resources to organize a week of activities for entrepreneurs. This first event and the one that followed in 1980 were so successful that BDC officially launched BDC Small Business Week across Canada in 1981. The initiative was quickly adopted by Canada’s business community. In 2014, over 300 activities across Canada attracted close to 10,000 business people to BDC Small Business Week. This BDC flagship event celebrates entrepreneurship at the local, provincial and national levels.

Opportunity to grow with social media

Where Business & Community Meet I r e n Lad

Local businesses can compete more effectively with larger companies in their neighbourhoods by harnessing the largelyunderutilized field of social media, says one local expert. Brian Bevilacqua, senior manager for communications and public relations at First West Credit Union and its Envision Financial division, says he sees enormous potential for the many local businesses he comes in contact with to boost their brand recognition through online social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google Plus, Yelp and others. “Social media plays an increasingly important role in the way we as humans

The Ladner Business Association fosters a positive business climate, engages the community, maintains relationship with government and promotes Ladner

do business and make purchasing decisions. Large national and international companies know this and have invested significant resources in slick social media programs,” he says, “but smaller local businesses often struggle to take advantage of social media.” Bevilacqua says that a lack of time and resources is one obstacle to small businesses getting active in social media. A more common challenge is a lack of social media know-how. “If a small business owner didn’t grow up with social media or isn’t naturally inclined towards technology in general, getting their business active in social media can seem a daunting prospect,” he says. “It doesn’t have to be,

though. The technologies themselves are actually quite simple, and if you establish clear goals, you’ll be able to strategically invest your precious time and energy in the right social media activities, so you can grow your online brand presence with minimal time commitment.” Bevilacqua advises small business owners apprehensive of taking first steps in social media to consult with millennial generation colleagues, friends or family members, and to tap into the wealth of online knowledge on using social media for business. “You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at just how easy social media can be and how much you enjoy participating,” he says.

BOWLING, Isabella “Pearl” (nee McCulloch) Embraced by the love of her family at her bedside, Isabella ‘Pearl’ Bowling (nee McCulloch) passed away peacefully on October 8, 2015 at Peace Arch Hospital. Pearl was born April 19, 1922 to Newt and Fannie McCulloch on the western shore of Boundary Bay at the east end of Brandrith Road (now 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen). She spent many happy hours at the beach playing with her dog Maggie, soaring high on her grandparent’s swing and swimming in the bay. Swimming was a passion she enjoyed all her life. In June 1935, she and her family moved to their new house on 16th Avenue. After graduating from King George High School in Ladner, Pearl worked at the Beach Grove Store during the early war years. Being good with people and numbers she enjoyed various jobs in retail, finishing as manager of the 5 and 10 store in Ladner. Her first date with Earl Bowling was New Years Eve 1949 and so began their happy life together. They were married June 8, 1951 at Ladner United Church. Pearl excelled as a wife and mother and in 1957 the family moved into their newly built home on 16th Avenue. Pearl and Earl remained there until their deaths.

Pearl was a past member of St. David’s Anglican Guild, Evergreen Garden Club and Thursday morning bowling league. She and Earl spent many hours on the Prairie Drift of the Fraser River near Ladner on their gillnetter the “Queen Bee”. She loved to travel, and visited Alaska, the Maritimes, California, Mexico, Hawaii and New Zealand numerous times. Although macular degeneration eventually robbed her of eyesight, she remained independent into her 90th year. She loved her flower garden and her wild birds, and grumbled about “ those darn squirrels “ that dined at her bird feeder.

Pearl also leaves a large loving circle of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. “Auntie Pearl” was a favourite who never had a bad word to say about anyone. She welcomed everybody at her Sunday afternoon teatime gatherings. She was a joy and inspiration and will be missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to thank Dr. Tom Martin of Tsawwassen for many years of dedicated care. Also deserving mention is the nursing staff of the ortho wards of Vancouver General and Peace Arch Hospitals. We wish to extend a very special thank you to Nurse Practitioner Leanne Hern and her staff of Peace Arch Hospital P.A.T.H. ward for their very professional and compassionate care of Pearl and her family for the final 7 weeks.

Please know that we will all continually be inspired by your strength, devotion, and passion for the arts, classical music, photography, sports, and most important to you, your family. We wish you a peaceful journey filled with the beauty you always had the ability to see. Love Always, From your Family
