A century-old farmhouse that once received an award for its restoration is now boarded up and faces an uncertain future. Located in the Agricultural Land Reserve, the historic Rawlins Residence, which sits on a roughly two-acre parcel at 2349-52nd St., is owned by the provincial government. Located near the mega malls under construction at the Tsawwassen First Nation, it was part of the Roberts Bank backup lands — thousands of acres expropriated by the provincial government in the 1960s for industrial development that never occurred — but wasn’t sold back to local farmers or used in the TFN treaty settlement like most of that acreage. The property until recently had been leased by Bernice Hoar, who moved there in 1978 and started a popular egg busi-

Hoar, who was never able to get a longer term lease from the province, passed away in September at the age of 83. Saying it was disgraceful how the province treated Hoar, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington spoke out on her behalf two years ago and represented her concerns to Victoria. DETERIORATED: see Page 3

information. This summer, the Corporation of Delta also conveyed concerns about the completeness of the port’s assessment, requesting the scope be expanded to include road and rail impacts. On the port authority’s website, Cliff Stewart, vice-president of infrastructure, noted, “After four years of scientific research (documented in a 7,000-page environmental impact statement), we have concluded the effects of the project, following the implementation of mitigation, are not expected to significantly affect the environment. It’s now up to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, through an independent review panel, to evaluate our studies and make a recommendation to the federal minister of environment.” He said the public will have opportunities to comment as the review moves forward over the next two to three years. To streamline the process and avoid duplication, the provincial government is relying principally on the federal review panel environmental assessment for the information needed for its own assessment.

Local activists are continuing to line up to take shots at Port Metro Vancouver’s environmental assessment of its proposed Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank. Earlier this year, the port authority submitted an environmental impact statement to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which will trigger a lengthy review process. The agency subsequently told the port authority to supply additional information before the review could proceed, which the port submitted in late October. As the application slowly winds its way at the federal level, longtime local environmental activist Susan Jones has joined others in calling on the province to undertake its own environmental assessment of T2 on issues she says the port has not adequately addressed. In a recent letter to the province, Delta council and others, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Jones, who has worked with such groups as the Boundary Bay Conservation Committee, the Western Canada Wilderness Committee and the Delta Farmland

Against Port Expansion has such serious concerns about the environmental assessment process for Terminal 2 it has prepared its own report. and Wildlife Trust, stated, “Not only does the B.C Government not recognize the international significance of the Fraser River Estuary to millions of migratory birds, salmon and endangered whales, it fails to offer any provincial accountability to this environmental impact assessment.” She said the province needs to step up and take action because the port authority is refusing to address issues beyond its immediate footprint.

Against Port Expansion also says it has serious concerns, preparing a report of its own in response titled Port Metro Vancouver’s Roberts Bank Container Terminal 2 Is Not Sustainable — It Must Never Be Built. “We have serious questions as to why Port Metro Vancouver would want to build in what is recognized as one of the most important ecosystems in the whole of Canada,” stated APE’s Roger Emsley. Similar complaints were

recently put forward by Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, who criticized B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak for a “handsoff approach” to the environmental assessment of T2. Polak responded the province had participated in the screening of the impact statement with the feds. She also noted it won’t be the last word when it comes to information that will be required during the assessment and that the province has the ability to ask for additional

Century-old house deteriorated due to short-term leases

CONTINUED from Page 1 Huntington said Hoar, who was only given twoyear leases, had urged the province to sell the land at a reasonable price but was rebuffed and instead faced an enormous asking price. Noting Hoar received an award in the early 1980s from the Delta Heritage Society for restoration of the house built in 1915, Huntington said uncertainty about the owner-

ship situation resulted in its deterioration over the years. Several community members have raised concerns it will now be torn down. As far as the land, Huntington recently wrote to Delta council seeking assurances every effort would be made to ensure the property, which is within Delta’s boundaries, remains in the ALR and

not become part of the neighbouring TFN’s development plans. Saying the Corporation of Delta would “expect” the province to go through the municipal processes if there was a plan to tear the house down, Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, told the Optimist the municipality received a legal opinion that the property would not

become part of the TFN if the First Nation purchased it. A spokesperson for the province would only confirm the land is vacant, there have been no decisions regarding the future of the property or any structures on it, and that consultations with First Nations must be completed if there is any change of land use. The TFN can buy

privately-held Brunswick Point lands should they come up for sale and add those properties to its territory, but the 52nd Street site is not part of that arrangement. “To my further consternation, there seems to be an intent by the province to treat this land as part of the Brunswick Point right of first refusal lands, which it is most certainly not,” Huntington stated.

Open houses look at proposal to export LNG from Tilbury

Residents are invited to open houses this week to comment on the WesPac Midstream’s proposed marine jetty to ship liquefied natural gas from Tilbury Island. Located next to the FortisBC’s LNG plant, the project would include a dock and loading platform that would supply LNG for local and offshore markets. The company says the size of the vessels is consistent with other ships using the Fraser River and that the project will not

involve the storage or processing of LNG. The project is subject to review under the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The provincial assessment process has been substituted for the federal process, meeting both federal and provincial requirements. Provincial and federal ministers will each make their own decision on whether to approve the project.

The first open house will take place today at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner from 3 to 8 p.m. Another open house will be held tomorrow in Richmond at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Riverport (10688 No. 6 Rd.), also running from 3 to 8 p.m. The public can submit comments to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office on what aspects of the project should undergo an assessment until Dec. 21.

Truck drivers set up picket line in Delta Unifor can’t reach deal with pair of companies, including Harbour Link Container Services JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Truck drivers are once again setting up picket lines in Delta. Striking drivers started picketing outside Harbour Link’s Tilbury location Monday after the company and Unifor, the union representing truck drivers, failed to come to an agreement. Over the weekend, six container trucking companies reached agreements with drivers after several days of aroundthe-clock bargaining. However, Harbour Link and Richmond-based Port Transport have yet to come to an agreement with the union. “We have been engaged in collective bargaining negotiations with the union since the summer,” Harbour Link said in a statement released late Monday. “Several

other container trucking employers have now reached agreements with the union and we hope to do the same. Our goal is to achieve a collective agreement that is compatible with our company’s unique operations. We intend to continue negotiating with the union to that end.” Picketing at Harbour Link started early Monday morning and Port Transport’s drivers have already been on strike for a week and remain off the job. “Instead of bargaining a fair deal and following the law, Harbour Link has been fighting tooth and nail to avoid paying the wages it owes drivers and now it wants a different contract than that signed with other companies,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor’s B.C. area director. “With these six deals in hand, Port Transport

their interest to get a deal as soon as possible.” The company said it intends to pay the retroactive wages. “The matter of retro pay required under the new legislation is a great challenge for all employers in the container drayage sector,” the statement reads. “Harbour Link has been cooperating with the

Commissioner’s Office to ensure retro pay is calculated and imposed consistently on all container trucking employers.” The company also said it has paid its drivers the legislated rates since they were implemented. Approximately 75 per cent of truck drivers represented by Unifor have now ratified a collective

agreement, which does not expire until July 2019. According to the union, the new deal ensures that all outstanding retroactive wages are paid out to drivers within 30 days, improves rates and fixes the pay chart of “off dock” moves. It gives drivers job security protection and improves dispatch language, as well it sees companies contributing toward a benefit plan for both owner-operator and company drivers. “These collective agreements are a major step forward for the sector’s drivers,” McGarrigle said. “Unifor drivers have a major advantage with fair rates and working conditions with this deal.” The union said the agreements are a “major step towards stability at Port Metro Vancouver.” Last March, a monthlong work stoppage effected business at PMV ports, including Deltaport. More than 1,000 nonunion drivers parked their rigs with another 400 union drivers joining them a few days later. The settlement reached at the time addressed drivers’ concerns, including low rates and wait times.

School district adds pair of Pro-D Days

The Delta school district announced last week there will be two more professional development days added to the school calendar to allow teachers to familiarize themselves with new curriculum. The additional professional development days are Monday, Feb. 22 and Monday, April 18. This school year marks the start of a three-year

rollout of a new curriculum in B.C. that was announced by the Ministry of Education and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation in September. There will be no instruction on these days so parents are being asked to make alternate arrangements for their children. These days are in addition to the professional development days already in

place at Delta schools and will create two four-day weekends. “We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our families, but we are pleased that our teachers are being supported to gain the knowledge they need to best implement the new curriculum,” superintendent Dianne Turner stated in a letter to parents.

hat to do with those heritage homes? It’s an issue that’s seems to always be in front of civic politicians these days and one that we’re having a tough time finding a resolution that satisfies everyone. The easy answer, obviously, is to fix them up and turn them into envied residences, but given renovation costs and today’s land values, that’s rarely how these situations play out. Instead, we’ve seen a number of historic homes knocked down in recent years, while others have become part of larger development applications. Each scenario is unique, but there are a couple of characteristics they tend to have in common: The houses require extensive renovations, often well into the six figures, and they sit on lots that are massive by today’s standards. We lose a bit of our history every time one of these homes is flattened, so that’s the least desired outcome, but the idea of restoring them while developing the rest of the property isn’t always a hit either. It’s clear Delta council was split on the plan for the old La Belle Auberge site in Ladner Village last week, with some worried the new houses make the project too dense and dwarf the heritage home. Other council members figured it was the best way to ensure the iconic structure was preserved. The project is dense, there’s no two ways about that, but ultimately it’s heartening that a home built way back in 1904 lives to see another day. Speaking of the old shoehorn, I got a notice in the mail from the Corporation of Delta last week that there’s a similar proposal for a property down the block from where I live. There are plans in the works to build seven homes on the Arthur Drive lot occupied by the century-old Delta Lodge. Most recently used as a community care facility, the 4,000-square-foot structure sits in the middle of an expansive 36,000-square-foot lot, but given the cost of renovations and the value of the land, it’s hard to make a financial case for it as a single-family home, at least in the present configuration. Developing around it turns it into a viable project but seven additional homes changes, or at least continues to change, the character of the neighbourhood. Call it the cost of keeping those grand old homes intact, I suppose.

Excited and concerned as malls less than year away

S

ixty-five curious residents recently attended the McKee Philosophers’ presentation on the mega malls under construction at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Mark Fenwick from Ivanhoé Cambridge, the developer of Tsawwassen Mills, spoke about that mall and the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons, confirming there had been no public consultation with our communities, only with the TFN. Some folks were excited about having all these new shopping and entertainment choices but many were concerned about traffic, safety, crime and the impact on our local economies and merchants. There will be 6,000 parking places at Tsawwassen Mills, including 14 for electric vehicles. Some 900 trees and 700 shrubs will be planted outdoors. There will be no natural plants inside. The roof will be white, which is efficient for both hot and cold weather. The Guest Services department is providing a promotional wall for regional tourist activities, computers, a play area for children and childcare. Strollers will be available as well as wheelchairs and scooters for people

with mobility issues. They promise ample seating throughout the malls. It will create 3,000 jobs and 15 cart leases will be available. The grand opening for Tsawwassen Mills is scheduled for Oct. 5, 2016, although the Bass Pro Shops store hopes to open in the spring. Modeled after malls in Calgary and Toronto, Tsawwassen Mills is to have premium brand (discounted) stores, dining and entertainment. Fenwick admitted our local retail fashion sector will likely be impacted but he doesn’t see much competition with other service businesses and suggested we will likely continue to support our own merchants. He noted they also have competition from online shopping.

There will not be a movie theatre, which drew a disappointed groan from the audience. Suggestion: Have the theatre be a multi-use space and when movies aren’t playing let community groups rent it for a nominal fee for their clubs and activities. There was a lot of concern about the intersection of 52nd Street and Highway 17, which will need a pedestrian overpass. Fenwick stated they have already invested $50 million in road upgrades. Suggestion: Maybe the Corporation of Delta, the TFN, Ministry of Highways and B.C. Ferries can collaborate on building this overpass before someone has to die. Other suggestions: Promotional pamphlets on their promo wall talking about our communities. To have a shuttle bus doing a continuous loop through Ladner and Tsawwassen to the malls. This would benefit us through not having to drive, park, walk long distances and South Delta could benefit by introducing the mall’s visitors to our communities. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

DON’T GAMBLE... CALL CAMPBELL

Development plan crowds heritage home in village

Editor: Re: La Belle proposal approved, Nov. 27 Delta council’s decision last week on the La Belle heritage property reveals the weak heritage preservation bylaws in our community. Council members that voted to support subdividing this property to squeeze in four three-storey single-family houses crowding this heritage house made a mockery of Ladner’s heritage. It was also not helpful when one councillor supports the proposal by using the scare tactic of potential demolition of La Belle to justify her vote. Over 80 Ladner residents signed a petition supporting preservation of the house, but did not

support squeezing in four tall houses to overwhelm the beauty of La Belle. The planning department and two council committees also do not support the proposed configuration of this development. Even our mayor voted against it and commented at the public hearing that building to the max in Ladner Village will cause Ladner to lose its small town feeling. A heritage advocate wrote to council about heritage building preservation, saying: “A necessary condition is the subservience of infill to the old building — necessary, that is, for the continued value of the heritage resource. This is even more an issue in the village-like atmosphere of Ladner. In this

Public opinion has nothing to do with it Editor: Re: Summits on climate change not making much headway, Community Comment, Nov. 27 I have to confess I was a little shocked to read a piece of climate denial in the Optimist but maybe I’m being naïve. Mike Schneider makes a number of unfounded and misleading claims, all in the service of suggesting that no one is able to do anything about climate change, and it’s not really something to worry about anyway, so the money spent on climate conferences and policies “can go elsewhere.” I will address his substantial points briefly. Schneider claims there is “no evidence” of a link between the current El Nino and climate change;

that the polar ice cap is growing, not shrinking; and that climate conferences and agreements are fruitless exercises because “developing countries” will never agree to anything that hampers their development. Regarding the link between El Nino and global warming, recent articles in Scientific American and Nature both assert this is indeed the case. Polar ice is, in fact, shrinking, the National Snow and Ice Data Centre noting that current ice levels are “1.19 million square kilometers below 1981-2010 average extent.” Finally, climate agreements are so difficult to come by not because of the reluctance of developing countries, but because of the efforts to

stay the economic course by wealthy nations with substantial fossil fuel reserves and considerable greenhouse gas emissions. Much more could be said on this complex issue. But complexity is what Schneider wants to avoid. He concludes by suggesting public opinion is split on climate change. Public opinion has nothing whatsoever to do with climate change. It is science, and it is fact. As has been said before, one’s opinion on climate change is as meaningless as one’s opinion on whether the earth revolves around the sun or whether a rock dropped off a cliff will fall towards the earth or the sky. To suggest otherwise is irresponsible and nonsensical. Stephen Collis

Good luck trying to get fenced dog park

Editor: Re: Petition calls for park for small dogs only, Nov. 25 Well, all I can say to Christine Rego is good luck with that. I have approached mayor and council for years about having a fully fenced, double-gated, offleash dog park in Ladner and have been put off many times. Back in 2011 is when I first put the idea forward and I was told it was supposed to happen, but it of course never did. I would rather have one for both small/large dogs. I work in Coquitlam and

there is a fantastic one there that has two separate areas for small/large dogs and it works really well. I think Delta is the only community that does not have anything fully fenced. What’s amazing to me here in Delta is that one of the designated off-leash areas is at the corner of Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A and far too frequently at the North 40 you see signs for “missing dogs” that have caught the scent of a rabbit, never to return. Also, there is a problem there with the rules and

NO Power NO Problem!!!

proposal, there is just too much density, and there is not enough oxygen around the old house; the development will be sacrificing the historic sense of place of the property.” With all the multiple changes the owner is planning for the interior and exterior of this house and property, it is questionable whether the historical integrity of the property will actually be preserved or end up as a fake façade. And who will actually live in the adjacent pricey three-storey single family homes? It won’t be downsizing seniors wishing to climb multiple stairs and it won’t be young families with almost no outdoor space near a busy roadway. D. Reynolds

regulations being totally ignored. A number of dog walking businesses are often seen with many more than the designated two dogs per person. Ladner Harbour Park would be a perfect place as it is already two-thirds fenced, so it would just require the rest to be fenced and a couple of gates put in. Come on Mayor Jackson, let’s be like the rest of the communities in the Lower Mainland and have fully fenced areas for our dogs to play. Tina Doughty

Ceremony a community effort all who contributed and participated. Remembrance Day is often all the community sees of the Royal Canadian Legion, which has a deep, rich history in Delta and communities across Canada, supporting not only the military/veteran community but more and more the needs of the local community. We are possibly the largest service organization in Delta, contributing over $70,000 per year to our local communities through various fundraising activities, helping with the Christmas hampers and donating over $200,000 to the Delta Hospital Foundation over the past 20 years. We totally rely on our selfless volunteers. These are the same volunteers that help with all of the organization that takes place on Remembrance Day. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and backgrounds and contribute countless hours of service to make sure we can continue to provide these services not only to our veterans and survivors, but to all of the community. We are very proud of what they do.

Editor: Re: Ceremony security detail over the top, letter to the editor, Nov. 20 As president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61, the executive and I feel compelled to respond to the letter from G. Campbell. Police Chief Neil Dubord’s recent letter did an excellent job of covering the security issues. We thank him for that letter and also thank all those who have written letters, blogs and Facebook posts to voice their support for the Legion. We are very thankful and respectful of the armed Delta police men and women who were at this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony to protect everyone during what are challenging and changing times. Thanks goes to our mayor, council and the countless staff who helped to prepare for the parade and ceremony. Without the hundreds of military, RCMP, Delta Police Pipe Band, fire and rescue services, first responders, cadets, Scouts and Girl Guides, and all others who participate in the event, we couldn’t have such a successful ceremony. Thank you to

Perhaps Campbell should not judge a book by its cover and volunteer and see how rewarding our world is. We take particular exception to Campbell’s diatribe of name calling. We found it to be unfair, unnecessary and, in our opinion, an exercise in public belittling. We are continuously seeking out new and younger volunteers and this diatribe does nothing but deter people from volunteering. The weather this year was spectacular and it’s been estimated we had a near record with over 5,000 people in attendance. We don’t think it is important which Remembrance Day ceremony you attend, but it’s important to attend and participate in all ways you can. What’s most important is to take the time to remember and be thankful for all the men and women who sacrificed their lives and continue to protect our freedom. This is what Remembrance Day is all about. Al Ridgway President Royal Canadian Legion — Branch 61

LNG projects bringing economic, environmental benefits for Delta MICHAEL MULCAHY

Optimist contributor

Name: Margot Age: 78 Occupation: Retired What is the activity? Swimming Where and when does this take place? Sungod Recreation Centre pool. How often do you participate? 3 times per week. How long have you been involved? I have been coming here since 1978 when the pool first opened. Why did you get involved in this activity? I have arthritis and my doctor advised me to do regular exercise. What do you like best about this activity? I like the socializing and the health benefits. How does it benefit your life? It keeps me active and healthy. What other things do you do to keep active? Activities with my family. Did you know that if you suffer from arthritis, exercise can help to keep your joints flexible? However, many people shy away from exercise because it can be painful. That’s where swimming comes in. In a pool, the buoyancy of the water helps reduce the stress on painful weight-bearing joints. Both swimming and aquafit classes can give your heart a good workout while keeping your joints limber and allowing you to increase your range of motion. In addition, the supportive sensation of the warm water may give you a physical and mental boost. Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture offers public swim sessions all day, plus a wide range of aquafit classes. Try ‘Aqua Joints’ or ‘Move to Improve’ to maintain or increase the range of motion in your joints. For more information, visit Delta.ca, stop by your local recreation facility to pick up a copy of the Fall 2015 / Winter 2016 Leisure Guide, or call 604-952-3000.

Delta is benefitting from the expansion of FortisBC’s LNG facility on Tilbury Island. Over the last year, the project has created thousands of hours of well-paying trades work, is contributing to the local economy, and is helping the province and industry meet environmental commitments. We officially broke ground on our Tilbury LNG expansion project in October 2014, which will significantly increase LNG production and storage for the domestic market by winter 2016. To date, FortisBC has committed more than $50 million in local contracts. Through our general contractor Bechtel Canada Co., we’ve engaged more than 100 businesses across 10 Lower Mainland municipalities. For companies like Delta-based Ideal Welders Ltd., working on the Tilbury expansion means employees can work where they live. According to Ideal Welders president Jim Longo, our expansion project is keeping his company’s shop in Delta busy and allowing staff to work close to home and contribute to B.C.’s economy. There are now more than 475 tradespeople

registered to work on the project, represented by 10 B.C.-based unions. So far those workers have logged a collective 65,000 fulltime equivalent hours on the expansion. Today, we have 130 people working full-time on the expansion.

Premier Christy Clark toured FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG plant expansion last month. While the discussion around LNG has largely focused on its economic and employment benefits to B.C., it’s important not to overlook the environmental benefits of LNG. For several years, FortisBC has been helping the transportation industry adopt natural gas as a cleaner fuel option. With B.C.’s transportation industry responsible for the largest share of provincial greenhouse gas emissions, converting fleets and vehicles to natural gas will help the

tion of LNG ferries, some of the first marine vessels of their kind in Canada. That is important because since the English Bay oil spill this past summer we’re all sensitive to the risk of using heavy oil and diesel as a marine fuel. With stricter marine emission regulations coming into force in North America, LNG is seen by many as an opportunity to help reduce that risk. In fact, a study commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund Canada related to shipping in the

Arctic found that switching to LNG from heavy fuel oil would mean a reduction in all pollutants as well as greenhouse gas emissions. And the safety risks associated with spills are greatly reduced. As the WWFCanada study observed, LNG dissipates into the atmosphere almost immediately. The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office is currently reviewing a proposal by WesPac Midstream — Vancouver LLC to build a marine jetty adjacent to our Tilbury facility. The jetty would support marine bunkering of LNG fueled ships and allow us to transport LNG abroad to markets such as Hawaii where oil-based power generation is still the norm. The Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is also consulting its members on an unrelated LNG export facility concept on Tsawwassen lands. TFN leadership has promised that, if approved, “every step will be done in a manner which is consistent with TFN’s values and environmental interests.” At FortisBC, we’re proud to be a part of this important industry which is bringing clear benefits to the community of Delta and its residents. Michael Mulcahy is the president and CEO of FortisBC.

Decorationsdownplayed except at Christmastime Some holiday traditions must be followed

I’m not much one for seasonal decorations. At Easter, I’ll bring out the ceramic bunny and put it on the dining room table. At Thanksgiving, the autumn wreath is retrieved from a closet and hung on the door. And come the start of summer, I’ll pull the patio tablecloth out of who-knows-where and toss it on the deck. But that’s about it. Except, of course, for now. “It’s almost December,” I said to the husband last week. “You know what that means.” It doesn’t, of course, mean that we ought to be hunting for a new calendar or making sure the furnace filters have been replaced or ensuring we have some sidewalk salt in case of sudden snow. It means we pull out the boxes. Let’s just say there are a few. The husband went to work. He opened the door of the catch-all space and yanked out the suitcases and the extra comforters and the picnic baskets in a bid to find what he was

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

looking for. And there they were: upwards of a dozen plastic bins that make their home in the catch-all space 11 months out of 12. “Excellent,” I said. “I’m ready to go to work.” Except it’s never work at all. I cranked on the holiday tunes. I poured an eggnog. I lit a fire. I began to whistle. The plush reindeer was plopped on the armchair. The green wooden Christmas trees were placed on the right end of the buffet. The winter castle candleholder went on an end table beside the chesterfield. All their regular spots.

“Wait a minute!” I said to the husband. ”You just put the NOEL figurines on the dining room table!” “Oh,” he said sheepishly. “I wasn’t thinking.” He took a swig of his nog and moved NOEL to the mantel. And so it goes. If Christmas is about anything, it’s about that special seasonal sameness. Place the foot-high nutcracker in the den? That would be about as insane as hanging the stockings from the kitchen counter or the mistletoe from the shower curtain. Heaven knows, the nutcracker has always taken its spot on the table inside the door. The gold wreath? In the kitchen, of course. The Santa snow globe? On the table in the rec room. Naturally. The boxes have now been emptied and their contents lovingly placed. We follow tradition at this time of year, and never think to mix things up. Christmas, you see, may live in my heart, but my heart lives inside my home.

12-year-old wants all kids to get new pair of Christmas pyjamas DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Molly Millward is at it again with another Christmas Pyjama Drive for local kids. The Ladner youngster was able to collect over 700 pairs of PJs last year. “It was pretty awesome. I didn’t think it was going to be that many. But I was happy that it was,” said Millward, 12. The pyjamas all go to

Deltassist, a non-profit family and community services society. “I usually get a pair of pyjamas every Christmas, so I think it’s sort of sad that some kids don’t get as many things on Christmas as we do. I think it would be sort of cool if all kids got a new pair of pyjamas on Christmas Eve to sleep in,” said Millward, talking about why the drive is something she wanted to do.

Local drop-off points include: • Buttercups Children’s Boutique • The Urban Rack • Buggy Babies Fitness • Studio West Dance (both locations) • Delta Police Department (including community stations) • Port Guichon Elementary • Brown’s Socialhouse. The deadline for dropoffs is Sunday, Dec. 6.

Get your photo taken with Santa and his owl helper at OWL’s winter fundraiser Saturday DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Get your photo taken with Santa Claus and his live owl helper at OWL’s winter fundraiser Saturday. A photo session and a 4” x 6” photo to take home costs $15 at the Orphaned

Wildlife Rehabilitation Society event. The interpretation centre and gift area will be open while tours will also take place. Hot chocolate and coffee will be available and a BeaverTails food truck will be onsite. It’s been a busy year at

OWL, said bird care staff and media relations person Mindy Dick. The society has broken records this year with 597 birds to date having received care, she noted. “To keep up with the financial demands, these fundraisers are very important,” she said.

She added food costs are “through the roof” at this time of year since it’s colder and the birds eat more. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at OWL, 3800-72nd St. For more details visit www.owlcanada.org or call 604-946-3171.

Feedback BACKGROUNDER:

The province has big plans for liquefied natural gas and it looks like Delta could become a hub for the industry. There is a major expansion underway at FortisBC’s LNG plant in Tilbury along with a proposal by WesPac for an adjacent marine jetty for LNG shipping. There is also a proposal to build an LNG export facility on TFN lands.

Q

WhatdoyouthinkaboutDelta becomingapotentialLNGcapital?

Sharon Johnson I’d rather it didn’t.

Karen Atkinson

As long as it doesn’t take farmland, I would be happy with it.

James Ouellette

No. Leave it as Delta. You know what that would do? When there’s a leak, where’s the ecosystem now? Where’s the walks? It’s no good when it’s littered with pollution.

Beryl Oborne

I’m sure just like everyone … everyone has mixed feelings about that. But we need energy and we need jobs. It’s got to be somewhere. It’s the least of the environmental issues as far as I’m concerned compared to the tar sands and oil pipelines.

Daryle Sherman

I would like it better somewhere where there wasn’t so many people.

Double duty for quarterback

Andrew Craft and the South Delta Bantam Rams moved one step closer to repeating as provincial champions with a 37-6 semi-final win over North Surrey on Sunday at Dennison Park. The Rams will look to cap a perfect season this weekend against Victoria.

10.8 9.5 13.5 5.2 11.8 10.2 13.1 4.6

These predictions are supplements to and not replacements for the Canadian Tide and Current Tables, which include the only authorized tidal predictions for Canada and are provided by Canadian Hydrographic Service.

Now that he has finished his moonlighting job across the street, Michael Calvert can put all his focus again on completing three years of perfection with the South Delta Bantam Rams. It has been a whirlwind couple months for Calvert, not only quarterbacking the Rams to an unbeaten season but seeing a heavy workload with the South Delta Sun Devils. He was one of seven Grade 10s aged up to play high school ball with five of them seeing regular duty. Calvert began the campaign playing receiver and defensive back. He also established himself as huge threat on special teams, returning three kicks for touchdowns. If that was not enough, he eventually took over as starting quarterback, marking the first time in at least 25 years the Sun Devils have gone with a Grade 10 at the position. “It was so busy,” smiled Calvert. “There was basically no time for everything but it was a good experience. It was fun getting to play with older kids that I never had a chance to play with before.” Calvert not only had to get used to playing the four down American version of the game, but also adjust his own level of expectations since he dominates his age group.

“It’s just way faster,” he continued. “I was so surprised the first game I played. Usually I can run around and do my thing but I got smoked from behind by a d-lineman who was probably twice my size. I said to myself ‘I guess this is high school football.’” The Bantam players’ prominent role with the high school team meant some adjusting on the fly for the Rams coaching staff. Calvert’s dad. “The community situation coexisting with a high school team is very rare,” said Brent Calvert. “It’s something we have been working on. It’s easy to say we have a relationship but the real thing is how do we make it work. “Things like identifying the kids practice loads and communicating on the schedules, when there were conflicts, to

get games changed. This is the pipeline for the Devils team and we hope to improve it every year and continue to bring the kids over at the right pace. It’s not all the way where we want it but it’s pretty close to a good situation where parents can feel their kids are going to be looked after in the right way.” Calvert’s team rolled to a 37-6 provincial semi-final win over North Surrey on Sunday. The Rams will play Victoria next weekend in Langley with the core second-year players looking to cap their minor football careers with a third straight B.C. title. Amazingly, the 2000 age group hasn’t lost a game over that stretch. “Most of these kids have been with us for nine years and this was their last game at Dennison,” added Brent Calvert. “There are five coaches here in the same boat as me. We have been a tight family.” As for Michael, his taste of high school ball told him what he needs to work on over the off-season. First, there is one more game to win and then shift his attention to the SDSS junior boys basketball team. “I know the plays and where the level of competition is,” he said. “I want to make quicker reads and get a faster release time. Now I’m going to have the time to train and get us back to B.C. Place again.”

From grassroots soccer toCISnationalchampion

Tsawwassen’s Nicole Sydor capped off her university soccer career in grand style by helping the UBC Thunderbirds capture the CIS national championship on home turf. UBC defeated Trinity Western 3-0 in the final.

Nicole Sydor brought the curtains down on her university soccer career in storybook fashion. The Tsawwassen Soccer Club product helped the UBC Thunderbirds capture just their sixth CIS national championship in the school’s 100 year history with a 3-0 win over conference rival Trinity Western University in the gold medal game. UBC lost just once this season in 24 matches to advance to the nationals for the first time since 2010. Sydor is now looking forward to her next conquest off the pitch. “Winning the championship was a great way to end my university playing career. It was a long tough road but worth all the bumps along the way,” she said. “I am now applying and hoping to enter nursing school in the fall. This is the next big challenge for me to tackle and I can’t wait.” The South Delta Secondary School graduate reflected on her youth career that began when she was seven in Tsawwassen’s grassroots program. “My first team was the Killer Bees and it’s funny looking back,” she said. “We would all run around chasing the ball all over the field like a swarm. I am sure we lost every game that year.” It was from there Sydor’s love of the game grew and, through the years , she continued to work to improve her play and compete at the highest levels. “I have to say it didn’t come easy for me ini-

tially, never being chosen for (or given opportunity) for provincial teams or local Metro teams,” she continued. “I was a scrawny little kid and had to go the long road. “When I think about it, it was those setbacks that really drove me and pushed me to work harder. At 15, I went from playing Silver ‘A’ to playing Metro and Premier Women’s League.” It was in the spring of 2011 when Sydor was invited to UBC’s identification camp which was being overseen by then coach Mark Rogers who now happens to be Tsawwassen’s current technical director. Rogers noticed noticed Sydor’s determination , drive and work ethic, offering her a scholarship to play forward for the school’s varsity team. Sydor accepted the offer and entered UBC’s School of Kinesiology. “The first year was so intimidating to be playing along-side these big girls who were so good, but I kept my head down and worked hard to improve and earn my spot,” Sydor recalled. Does she have any advice for today’s young players coming through the local clubs? “Yes, never give up on your dreams. Don’t let anybody say you can’t do it. Work hard and keep your eye on the prize.” Corner kicks… The UBC roster also included another SDSS graduate — second-year defender Nadia Langenberg — who saw limited minutes but is expected to have a greater role next season.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Don at Royal Columbian Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Predeceased by his wife Edna and brother Earl. BRYCE, Mary Born Florence Mary Fidler in Toronto, Ontario on September 8, 1923, Mary died peacefully in her sleep on November 19, 2015 at The Waterford, Tsawwassen, BC. She went to be with her Lord, and her husband of 67 years, Ron, who died four months earlier, and her son Bill. Her surviving children Bob, Marilyn and Katy and their families, as well as sister-in-law and brother-in-law Muriel and Bud Pritchard and the rest of the family, will miss her quiet but ever present love and care. Mary showed her love in practical ways to her family, church, friends and community, and could always be depended upon to help out when it was needed. Mary and Ron enjoyed participating in bible studies, singing in choirs, playing tennis, gardening and many other activities together. Ron even helped Mary now and then with her quilting projects, which was one of her lifelong hobbies, along with knitting. She spent many hours knitting baby articles to be given to charities. It is that kind of hands-on love that defined this humble, kind and generous woman during her long and fruitful life. It was a delight to see Mary in her new home at The Waterford. After having spent her life in a modest way, Mary enjoyed every moment there, feeling quite pampered. For her part, she always made sure she looked her best, with her lipstick on and by going to the hairdresser every week, no matter what! The family is very thankful to the staff of The Waterford for the superb care and attentiveness shown to both Mary and Ron during their time there over the past two years. It was a charming last stage in their full and wonderful lives. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 2:00 pm at St. David’s Anglican Church, 1115 51A Street, Tsawwassen, BC. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
