Local kids will have a brighter Christmas thanks to Deltassist’s annual Toy Depot. The depot, which ran for three days earlier this month at the East Delta Hall, provided toys for children from low-income homes. The toys are donated by groups and individuals throughout the community. Kids from over 430 families received toys this year, noted Christiann Munro, Deltassist’s Christmas program coordinator. Besides a couple hiccups, like a power outage

and a fire alarm being inadvertently pulled, the depot went well this year, Munro said. Volunteers are essential to making the program run, she added. They help with setup, during the actual depot and then with cleanup afterwards. Tsawwassen’s Donna Clark has been volunteering at the depot for five years. “It’s the passion for giving and helping out,” she said, explaining why she keeps coming back. Clark, who always works the pyjama table, said it’s a rewarding experience. “It’s just been some-

helping sort out the toys during setup day at the depot. “It’s a feel-good activity,” she said. “You can see you’re doing something to

help people …” Munro said Delta is a supportive community that steps up every year for Deltassist’s Christmas programs.

WISHING YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE BEST IN 2016!

Volunteereffortsfill over 600 hampers Ladner Legion takes lead on annual program DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Dozens of volunteers were busily working away last week at Paridon Horticultural Warehouse in East Delta. They were filling hampers with food for Deltassist’s Christmas hamper program, which were distributed last Saturday to less fortunate families around Delta. Volunteers had 630 hampers to put together, said Brian Rainbow, one part of a three-person team, including Bob Taggart and Phil Easdown, from the Ladner Legion co-ordinating the work at the warehouse this year. “We’ve had super volunteers,” Rainbow said, estimating over 200 lent a hand this year. Many volunteers have been there before and help out newcomers, he explained. This year’s effort went very well, he noted. “We’ve been at it for

More than 200 volunteers helped out with the annual Christmas hamper program this year. long enough. Of course there are glitches, you can’t do something like this without a glitch or two. But it’s working very well.” Service club members from around the community put in hours every year for the program. Rainbow has been helping with the program since the mid-1970s. “It’s a good feeling. You’ve got to give back,” he said. Bob Tarlton, a member

of the Tsawwassen United Church, was one of the volunteers working at the warehouse last week. “You see the end result by taking the boxes to the front door of people who need them,” he said. Deltassist’s Christiann Munro said while Deltassist does the registration for the hamper program, volunteers do 99 per cent of the work. “They put in a lot of time and a lot of muscle to make it happen,” she said.

Sacred Heart School’s annual Auction Gala was once again a roaring success with this year’s theme based on the 1920’s – The Great Gatsby. This is a major fundraiser for the school and funds raised from this year’s event will be put towards the development of a new community garden, located on the Sacred Heart Parish grounds, where students will learn where their food comes from, and cultivate and grow their own vegetables and plants. Sacred Heart School would like to thank those sponsors that donated to the event:

t was a week before Christmas and all through the region mayors were grumbling that Delta was getting a Stone instead of its usual lump of coal. When Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced last week that a $3.5-billion bridge would replace the George Massey Tunnel, it was an early, but not unexpected, Christmas gift. Stone merely confirmed what the premier had announced three years earlier, but he was able to provide greater detail on what will be the longest bridge in the province’s history. With construction scheduled to start just over a year from now, we will soon see tangible proof that a new river crossing isn’t just a dream. During this season of goodwill to men you’d think politicians from throughout the region would be happy for us out here in Delta, overjoyed that Victoria is finally addressing what has been called the province’s biggest traffic bottleneck. Well, you’d be wrong. Several mayors, none of whom commute through the tunnel on a daily basis, have been outspoken in their criticism of the project, saying the money would be better spent elsewhere in the battle to address traffic congestion. Coincidentally, those more deserving projects just happen to be in their jurisdictions. Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner thinks the money should be put toward priorities identified during this year’s ill-fated plebiscite, which — surprise, surprise — included light rail for Surrey as one of its big ticket items. I guess a SkyTrain extension, a new Port Mann Bridge and the South Fraser Perimeter Road aren’t enough. Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson, Richmond’s Malcolm Brodie and other mayors have also questioned the expenditure. It’s one crossing so, no, it won’t solve the region’s traffic woes, but it’s selfish in the extreme to suggest commuters in these parts make do with the antiquated tube for the foreseeable future while our tax dollars continue to be spent on projects elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. Our mayor, Lois Jackson, is bang on when she says it’s Delta’s turn. The new crossing is a gift we won’t be able to unwrap for another seven gridlock-filled years, but it’s nice to know Santa didn’t forget about us this time.

Here’s a Christmas wish for the only planet we’ve got

T

hey say one should never discuss politics or religion in polite company. On this Christmas Eve, I hesitantly reflect back over this past year and feel compelled to comment on how much religion and politics are taking us down a dangerous road. With the likes of ISIS on one extreme and Donald Trump on the other, I can only shake my head. I used to laugh at Trump but now he scares me as much as ISIS does. I’m not a particularly religious person, having been raised by a scientist father and a mother who attended our local United Church mainly out of duty to her mother. I attended Sunday school when young but after my grandmother passed, I chose instead to go skiing with my friends on the local mountains. Mom sang in the church choir and belonged to a group of women who supported the church through various fundraising events, including running the thrift shop that was so successful they were able to build an entirely new church. This was my mom’s social life and involved hundreds of volunteer hours every month that gave her great satisfaction and a circle of friends outside of my dad’s world of science.

Community Comment ML BURKE

For her it wasn’t so much about God as it was being a part of a community. It gave her purpose and pleasure in that she could give something back and have fun doing it. Volunteering is the gift that keeps on giving — out to the recipient and back to you, creating a continuous circle. It was quite natural I ended up working as a manager of volunteers, which mirrors human resources management except for motivations being other than a paycheque. I highly recommend volunteering in retirement. If you like doing it, it’s not work. Just find an organization or an issue you care about and ask how you can help. Or create it. For many, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus. Not usually one to quote scriptures, this time I am making an

exception. It’s also known as the Golden Rule that I try to live by. Luke 6:31 records Jesus saying, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Rather than doing to others what they have done to us or giving them what they may deserve, we are to treat them the way we want them to treat us. It’s about love, not hate. Tolerance, not fear. Bombing ISIS and closing borders to Muslims and Mexicans, as Trump is proposing, is not the answer and would likely make things worse. But wait… There is renewed hope in that 200 countries amazingly came to an agreement to drastically reduce the Earth’s CO2 emissions by 2020. In closing out the year, here’s a little gift for you. I attended the Corporation of Delta’s Infrastructure Open House and got confirmation from engineer Steven Lan there will indeed be a second exit into Ladner from the new bridge at River Road. Yeah!!! Have a lovely Christmas and may 2016 bring peace, understanding and cooperation for all who inhabit our fragile planet. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Christmas Edition December 23 and 24, 2015 The Delta Optimist A9

Letters

A house is made a home

Editor: There is nothing to see when you drive by but everything to see when you drop in. We know the people that live in this home. We visit them a lot. It is not surprising such great effort has gone into making the Christmas season so beautiful as this home celebrates every season. But, oh, there is something about Christmas, and those in charge of decorating do it so well. In every room there’s a tree where every decoration seems to be so thoughtfully placed. Bright, tiny lights sprinkled amongst garland branches

are wrapped around pillars and hang from on high. On the mantel, draped with cotton snow, stands the Magi. Oh, and let us not forget, nestled in the corner and lifted up so all who pass by may look in and wonder, is the Nativity Scene. Wherever one looks, it’s a Christmas feast for their eyes. And for their noses? We have been there on many occasions and been met by the wafting of yumminess. The cook offers up freshly baked cookies and other marvelous treats and they are always served with a smile. The atmos-

phere is festive and the love and care expressed to all who live and visit is genuine. And when the Christmas season is over and the decorations that have been admired and appreciated are all neatly put away until next year, it is true to say the care and love does not stop in this household. It carries on all year round. We know this to be true because we visit a lot. Thank you to the staff of Westshore Laylum Care Home. Thank you for the great job you all do in making a house a home. Merry Christmas. Sandra, Clare and Kim Scott

Selected tree ends up elsewhere

Editor: Well, just when you think you have seen and experienced it all, something comes along that takes things to a shocking new level. Last Friday night we went and purchased our annual Christmas tree from a lot in Ladner. We found a beauty (an expensive beauty) but heck it is only once a year. It was dragged to the front of the lot for us. While one waited to pay, the other was engaged in a conversation with someone extolling the virtues of shopping locally. We agree. Others were com-

ing and going so things were a bit chaotic but friendly. Simultaneously, there was a “discussion” going on in which a man decided to haggle for the price of his Christmas tree. He won. When one of us next looked he was walking off the lot with a tree that seemed very lovely considering what he paid. He glanced over his shoulder and smiled as he quickly dragged it to his truck. Our tree was delivered in the dark, quickly deposited in the backyard and so it wasn’t until the next morning when we realized it was, in fact, not our tree.

We had bought a noble and we now had a plain, rather sparse fir. And then the penny dropped. That man had brazenly walked off the lot with our tree taking advantage of the confusion. In spite of our disappointment, we still hope that man somehow finds peace at this time of year. We will sit and sing around our rather meager little tree knowing that is those we share it with that matters and we will wonder what kind of happiness that man can find around his pilfered tree? Pay toll once to cross throughout the day problem for us if this one concept is deemed as fair: Any vehicle having to use bridging between Lower Mainland communities be charged only to a maximum on any given day (it might be $4). Cross anywhere, as often as needed that day, but expect to pay a one-time fee for the day. I know toll cameras/ data systems could be programmed for that. People might actually plan on one day in a week for trips across bridges, even perhaps at given times of the day when it might be cheaper at low-

volume times. So, yes, I believe this could work for quite a few of us. And perhaps for those who pay the extra to ICBC for driving-to-work insurance, they might qualify for a special rate for naming a bridge they would cross to get to and from work daily. Additionally, I am for a single-occupant, userpay option for underused HOV lanes too if need be. I know a lot of people would gladly pay an extra $4 to use those (mostly empty) lanes. Bill Hamilton

Editor: Re: Tolling must be fair: mayor, Dec. 16 I agree with Mayor Lois Jackson’s concerns that if there are to be “blanket” crossings tolls, they need to appear to be fair. As pensioners living in Tsawwassen, it’s a fact we can find most everything we want/need right here on the south side of the Fraser River. We “need” to use the tunnel once a week (with friends and our elderly parents living in Steveston). So we do have choice and tolls might not be a

Editor: Re: West has limited ability to handle refugees, letter to the editor, Dec. 9 Space limits my ability to answer Steven Austin’s letter comprehensively; I shall try to cover some of the errors in fact and judgement. Shared Canadian values: it’s unlikely we could have such a successful country if 36 million people did not share important values. Austin’s representation of Syrian refugees would be laughable if the situation was not so tragic. Clearly, he has not thought out the whole picture. Perpetrators of the Paris attacks: all the attackers and their associates whose identification has been confirmed were French or Belgian citizens. The links of two attackers with refugees have not been confirmed. No democratic nation’s sovereignty has been put at risk. Yes, oil-rich Middle Eastern monarchies should do more. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates claim to have done much but this is questioned. Poorer Middle Eastern countries have borne the brunt: Turkey, 2.2 million refugees; Jordan, 1.4 million; Lebanon, 1.2 million. As opposed to being burdensome, the vast majority of immigrants to Canada have contributed

to the country’s success in the modern world. He speaks of “sullen and hostile Middle Eastern enclaves in European cities like Paris.” In Paris, the people I think he’s referring to have North African roots. Canadian “natives” might disagree that early immigrants were not “a potential time bomb;” they introduced diseases that reduced the native population by 50 to 90 per cent, shunted them off their land into reserves, attempted and largely succeeded at cultural genocide by taking children away from their homes and families and held racist positions that persist to this day. The greatest atrocities committed in Canada by one people on another were committed by “white,” “Christian” Europeans, presumably the people who established the civilization in Canada that Austin speaks of. Few, if any, economists and population experts would agree that the “limit has been reached.” Demographics show that we need working-age immigrants Frontiers all conquered? Attitudes and actions based on egocentricity, xenophobia, prejudice and bigotry, along with ignorance or dismissiveness of facts, form a significant challenge to overcome. While Austin’s letter can

be shown to be erroneous and ill-judged in so many ways, the important issues here are our humanity and an intelligent response to terrorist groups like Daesh (which calls itself the Islamic State, a gross misrepresentation). (Small note: planting sleeper terrorists in refugee camps for years in the slight hope that one day some Western country like Canada will include such terrorists in its limited intake of refugees seems an unlikely plan for Daesh. Radicalization and recruitment of Westerners in their own countries is proving more successful than a wasteful hit-andmiss sleeper plan would be.) By aiding and welcoming Syrian refugees, we not only exercise and strengthen our humanity, we counter the recruitment efforts of the terrorists. By acting inhumanely toward these refugees, and attacking and alienating our Muslim population, we are playing into the hands of groups like Daesh. Donald Trump and those who support him in his anti-Muslim rants are the best recruiting tools Daesh has. Howard Solverson

Give motorists tolling options

Editor: Problem: When you toll a bridge, many people go to the “free” bridge. Solution: Dedicate one lane of the toll bridge to a reduced toll, say $1, and keep the other lanes at the more expensive rate. Using highway dividers, make it so drivers have to make this decision prior to the bridge. More people will choose to take the new bridge because it’s pretty cheap as long as you take the $1 lane (saving gas and time by not taking the free bridge). They then get to the bridge and if the cheap lane is lined up, they will have to make a decision. Do I sit in the lineup and save a few bucks or do I buck up, pay the more expensive toll and glide past the lineup? My bet is many people will choose the more expensive lane. The results: more people using the new bridge, greater revenue and reduced traffic on the free bridge. You’re welcome. Jim Rogers

Bridge will just move congestion

Editor: Beware of politicians offering $3.5 billion gifts as they maybe mere white elephants haunting the taxpayer for generations to come. If one thinks the B.C. Liberals’ $3.5-billion bridge, replacing the perfectly good George Massey Tunnel, will improve traffic congestion, one had better take off their rose-coloured glasses because, despite the hype

and hoopla, all the bridge will do is move congestion about three kilometres north to about Steveston Highway. Why? The answer is simple math; the Laing, Oak, Knight and Queensborough bridges are at or near capacity throughout the day and the new traffic brought by the bridge will just sit idling on Highway 99 as the larger amount of cars using the new bridge

will have nowhere to go and will crawl through Richmond unless another bridge is built to Burnaby/ Vancouver. Those gladhanding this project have seemed to have slept through their math classes. As planning for this bridge is not part of a regional transportation plan, then we must accept that regional transportation and transit planning is all but come to an end in the South Fraser region.

The new Fraser River bridge is pure “B.C. blacktop” politics, which will provide pricey photo-ops at election times, for it will not bring much hoped for improvements to our regional transportation system. Footnote: A tolled bridge will be the deathknell of the Tsawwassen Mills as very few people will pay a toll to shop in Tsawwassen. D. M. Johnston

job as being his mother. Joseph played a significant role in the birth and early life of Jesus. He was an active husband and dad. There are some things about Joseph that we can learn from the Christmas accounts in the Gospels that can help us in our walk with God. He was a man of courageous integrity, unselfish compassion, deep faith and immediate obedience. God chose a quiet, behind-the-scenes working man for one of the most important jobs in history. Each of us matters. How we live matters. Character matters. With God’s help, we can make a difference in our world. Mike invites dialogue at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

Joseph is one of the most understated characters of Christmas. He is almost a bit player in most depictions of the Christmas story. Look for him in Nativity sets. Often he is even holding a shepherd’s staff, though he was a carpenter by trade. He has no speaking lines in the Gospel accounts. In fact, the Bible doesn’t record him actually saying anything — ever. Think about Joseph in most Christmas pageants. He just fades into the background. You might notice if he wasn’t there, but he doesn’t do anything — except knock on the inn door or stand by the manger. What was he like? Was he the life of the party or did he go out to his

More than happy to wait for the big day

It’s all about the anticipation. You know what I mean. Christmas is certainly wonderful, but it’s the lead-up that has all the buzz. That lead-up started weeks ago. There was the writing of the shopping list. There was the hanging of the wreath, the wrapping of the gifts, the decorating of the tree. There was the baking of the cookies and the mailing of the presents. There were poinsettias to buy and invitations to send and hors d’oeuvres to prepare. There were cards to write and lights to string and receptions to attend. Sweet anticipation meant we had carols playing every night. It meant we sat down in front of Elf and Home Alone and A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life. It meant a once-in-a-year high-caloric consumption of things like eggnog and shortbread and chocolate snowballs. Yuletide anticipation has also taken us out of

the house — to walk over to the pub to share a festive pint with friends, to cruise around the neighbourhood to check out the beautiful lights. It’s all about swelling excitement. It’s the feeling you get when a vacation is approaching. Sure, it’s terrific when the plane lifts off or the train pulls out of the station, but the lead-up — that ever-sweet lead-up — is what really gets you going. You know: the poring over maps, the booking of tours, the filling of the suitcase. “Oh,” I can remember a work colleague saying one

day when I was beaming by the water cooler. I was heading to Maui in less than a week. “You’re on that preholiday high, aren’t you?” he asked. And so, here we are: not set to board a train or fly to Hawaii, but certainly poised to take it all in. The stockings. The turkey. The opening of gifts. We’re not quite there — but almost. The lead-up may have started in early December, but it’s picked up steam every day since then. Today, of course, is the last of the days of anticipation, and we’ll be fully immersed in the preholiday high. And so, we’ll do what we always do on Christmas Eve: we’ll dine on tourtiere and kick back with music and candles and perhaps a glass of something bubbly. We won’t, however, wish the hours would zip away and take us directly to Christmas. There’ll be magic, for sure, tomorrow. But we’re more than happy to wait.

Development of a Pest Management Plan Nuisance Mosquito Control The purpose of this Pest Management Plan (PMP) No. 700-0004-2016/2021 is to reduce overall mosquito annoyance within the Corporation of Delta by controlling larval development using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to control. The PMP focuses on larval mosquito control initiatives and uses public education, physical site modification and biological controls to reduce larval mosquito populations and conserve, or enhance, natural mosquito predators wherever possible and includes the use of non-persistent, bacterial larvicides.

The proposed duration of the PMP is from 15 April 2016 to 14 April 2021. Larvicide products proposed for use include Vectobac 200G, which contains the natural-occurring soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, (PCP #18158) and VectoLex CG (PCP # 28008) and VectoLex WSP (PCP # 28009) made with the related bacterium Bacillus sphaericus. These products provide species-specific control of mosquito larvae and are non-toxic to other organisms including insects, fish, birds, wildlife, man and domestic animals. Mosquito larvae require stagnant or non-flowing waters, temporary or permanent, to develop. Development habitats include salt marshes and freshwater marshes, ponds, ditches and catch basins and other open water habitats which may produce larval mosquitos. When physical alterations (draining, filling) are neither practical or desirable, developing larvae will be treated using VectoBac 200G or VectoLex larvicides. Total area for larvicide treatment is not to exceed 125 hectares of public lands in each year of the PMP. Applications of Vectobac and VectoLex will be made using ground-based, hand-broadcast or motorized backpack spreader methods. All applications will be conducted within the Corporation of Delta. This Pest Management Plan is being prepared for the Corporation of Delta by D.G. Regan and Associates Ltd., an environmental services firm with extensive experience in pest management plan development and local mosquito control operations. Information on proposed treatment areas, annual mosquito control program operations and this PMP are available for viewing by the public on Delta’s website at www.delta.ca or by email cae@delta.ca or telephone at 604-946-3253 or by request to the Office of Climate Action and Environment. The Harlow and Mary Ann Burrows Foundation has made annual holiday donations to Delta Hospital since 2010, gifting over $40,000 towards the purchase of essential equipment. The foundation also supports community organizations that have a volunteer base and that strive to make a difference in people’s lives. It has supported a wide range of local causes, including Delta Hospice, Artists in the Village Society and Delta Life Skills Society. Having lived in Delta since 1978, Harlow and Mary Ann Burrows are passionate about the local community. “We live in a very generous community of people who are invested in making Delta the best that it can be,” says Mary Ann. “The hospital is an important part of ensuring our local community is well supported. We have enjoyed watching it grow and expand over the years,

A16 The Delta Optimist Christmas Edition December 23 and 24, 2015

A Christmas tradition: the holly and the ivy season. It had been considered sacred in earlier cultures, associated with the winter solstice ceremonies of druids and the Romans’ saturnalia festival, and in turn the carol links features of the plants with episodes from the Christian story. The evergreen nature of both holly and ivy plants was once considered a sign of fortitude and resilience, in contrast to the many deciduous trees of Britain that lose their leaves in winter. Flocks of birds were seen to feed on

In older, simpler times, there was a popular English Christmas carol with a lilting tune, The Holly and the Ivy. Like many such traditional folk songs arising from a rural, pre-literate culture, this carol connects the sights and sounds of nature with seasonal religious events. For hundreds of years, holly was admired for its shiny dark green leaves and glowing red berries, making it the perfect decoration to bring into churches and homes to mark the Christmas

holly showing mastery against the cold and ivy shivering around the door! Ivy, with its dark berries, was considered a lesser plant, with one old song even claiming “none but the owlet” was found in its branches. The English holly and ivy of the carol are not native plants in Western Canada, but were brought here at some point in history and have thrived in the mild coastal climates. Unfortunately, some have thrived too well, and both are now considered non-

holly berries and shelter within the tree’s prickleleaved branches. Some old texts liken holly and ivy to man and woman respectively, with

welcome, invasive plants. Holly berries are relished by birds such as American robins that eat the fleshy drupe and pass the seeds in their droppings, propagating the holly in forest understorey and shading out native plants. English ivy sends out dozens of long, flowerless stems that trail on the ground and clamber up tree trunks and fences, rapidly smothering everything around it. Once mature, ivy develops into a bushy shrub with small white flowers and, contrary to the old song, its

black, clustered berries are eaten by thrushes, starlings and other birds. Both holly and ivy berries are poisonous for humans. English holly and ivy should not be grown in gardens or sold in nurseries. Police Chief Neil Dubord says the caring shown by the people of Delta is nothing short of exceptional.

Christmas is a time of year to slow down and appreciate the blessings that surround us. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, spend time with family and perhaps indulge in a few too many goodies! It is also a time to recognize the beauty of Delta and the wonderful community it is. When I came to the Delta Police Department earlier this year, I was amazed at the

public support for the organization, and was humbled by the warm welcome I received personally. This community is unique in its character and this time of year is no different. The focus on charity is nothing short of exceptional: I have seen elementary school students collecting PJs for other children, volunteers cooking and serving dinner to those in need, and I have seen full food bank boxes and donations made to many not-for-profit

organizations. The community of Delta certainly knows the meaning of Christmas as everywhere you turn someone is extending a gracious hand of support. Thank you for all you do. From the Delta police family to yours, may you have a safe and joyful holiday season; we look forward to serving this extraordinary community in 2016. Merry Christmas! Neil Dubord was sworn in as Delta police chief earlier this year.

Golfers help needy families

Continuing with its community service commitments, for the third consecutive year the Tsawwassen Men’s Golf Club donated Christmas food and clothing hampers to eight needy families in Ladner and Tsawwassen. Last Friday club president Bruce MacLean and executive members Tom Bearss, Ken Hart and Andrew Connaris delivered two boxes each to four elementary schools:

Ladner Elementary and Sacred Heart in Ladner, and Pebble Hill and Cliff Drive in Tsawwassen. MacLean had liaised with school staff about the make-up of the recipient families that each school had designated as deserving recipients. He and his wife Erin then organized relevant contents for each box, tailored to each family, totaling 21 children and 11 adults/parents.

Golf club members contributed food, toys, clothing and money for this program throughout the golf season. The principals at each school were ecstatic to receive the boxes and sincerely expressed their gratitude to club members. “It’s an honour and a privilege to be a small part in making these deserving families’ Christmas a little bit brighter,” said MacLean.

The South Delta Storm Bantam A1 team, including players Connor Chisholm (left), Tristan McLean, Ryan Flack and Easton Elmer, gave back to the community by adopting a family this Christmas. Organized by one of the team moms, Jennifer SimChisholm, the team raised about $1,200 as well as several hundred dollars’ worth of food, new clothes and gift cards. The team helped a family with four kids through the Surrey Christmas Bureau. It provided new winter boots, new winter jackets, new bedding (comforters, sheets and pillow cases), new bath towels and stockings “overflowing” with gifts. The team also arranged for a fully cooked Christmas dinner to be delivered.

This Christmas, give your family and friends a gift that saves lives ... a smoke alarm. Most fatal fires take place at night, while you and your family are asleep - when seconds can make the difference between life and death. If you have one or more working smoke alarms in your home you double your chances of surviving a fire. Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. And a caution ... Never borrow a battery from a smoke alarm for use in a toy or gadget! Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace every ten years.

• Candle Care

Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the holiday season. They can also be a source of fire in your home, so be cautious with them. Place candles in non-tip candle holders and ensure they are well away from the Christmas tree and other holiday decorations. Never leave lit candles unattended and ensure that they are out of reach of children! Turn off all lights and blow out all candles when leaving.

Christmas!

www.deltafire.ca 604-946-8541 • Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights

Most Christmas fires can be prevented. If purchasing a live-cut tree, test it for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground. If needles fall or can be pulled off easily the tree is too dry. AT home, find a cool spot for your tree, away from heater vents and the fireplace. Keep your tree as fresh as possible by watering it often. You can also reduce the risk of fire by installing cooler mini lights, or the new LED type lights. Inspect your strings of lights for wear or damage. If Interior/exterior lights are worn or frayed replace them. Never leave the lights on while you sleep or are away from the home. Limiting the use of warm lights also helps to extend the freshness of a live-cut tree! Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.

• Kitchen Fire Safety

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL CUSTOMERS, Enjoy your lovely homes and we wish you all peace and happiness.

Practice fire safety in the kitchen this holiday season. Never leave cooking food unattended and if you are faced with a grease fire, remember - put a lid on it and turn the heat source off! Always turn pot handles to the back of the stove so pots won’t be pulled or knocked off. If you don’t already own a kitchen fire extinguisher… DON’T WAIT! Get one now as a pre-season gift for your whole family! Enjoy the holidays and stay fire safe! Be alert when cooking.

Students form Kids 4 Kids to aid B.C. Children’s Hospital

For the past three years, a group of Delta students has been taking part in B.C. Children’s Hospital’s Festival of Trees. Kids 4 Kids was founded by Maddy McCart, Taylin McGill and Alia Kahn. Over the past two years, the group has expanded to include Mabel Lundy, Nicola Bancroft and Chloe Roberts. Taylin is a patient at B.C. Children’s Hospital and her friends increasingly realize how her life has been impacted. This is their inspiration to continue with their Kids 4 Kids tree fundraiser every year. This year, Taylin was named the 2015 Festival of Trees Champion Child. In her honour, the group has named this year’s tree the Champion Child Tree. This remarkable group of young ladies has fundraised in the community for the past four years to sponsor their own tree and support the Festival of Trees. Their efforts include hosting garage sales, name

a bear contests, working a concession stand at a dance show, bottle drives and hosting a Halloween dance. In addition, this year they held a Krispy Kreme donut fundraiser at SDSS where they sold 60 dozen donuts to hungry teenagers and raised over $335. This year’s Festival of Trees runs until Jan. 5 at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver and CF

Pacific Centre. For the past 28 years, the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver has been transformed into a forest of beautifully decorated trees, all in support of B.C. Children’s Hospital. In 2008, the festival expanded to include the main area of CF Pacific Centre. The trees are generously sponsored and decorated by individuals and corporations that are committed to supporting child health in B.C. The Festival of Trees is a fundraising event that has become a must-see holiday tradition in Vancouver. Open to the public, the festival invites visitors to browse through the holiday display and cast a ballot for their favourite tree. The Kids 4 Kids Champion Child Tree is located in the lower lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed

with Nelson’s service and price And I thought of his crew who are always so nice. I think that I’ll call them that old Nelson crew And place one last order Yes, that’s what I’ll do. As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer! “What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?” Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

Canadians will use break to regroup Greater Vancouver drops four games to frontrunners in B.C. Major Midget Hockey League

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta- optimist .com

The Greater Vancouver Canadians will use the Christmas break as an opportunity to regroup after a rough four game stretch for the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League club. For the second straight year, the Canadians have opted to take a pass on the variety of holiday tournament options. Head coach Phil Alalouf is hoping time with family will give the players a chance to re-focus and get his team back on track for the second half of the regular season. Greater Vancouver will take a four game losing streak into 2016 but it was the effort more than the result that has Alalouf concern. The Canadians were dominated by the front-running Valley West Hawks and Cariboo Cougars, outscored 24-6 in the losses, including a 7-1 blowout on Sunday at the Olympic Oval. It was a far cry from back in October when the Canadians battled the powerhouses hard in three of four games and even managed a win in Prince George. “The problem we are running into right now is trying to find that compete level,” said Alalouf. “We were almost flat today and didn’t have enough guys throwing their body around. I told them after the game ‘it’s time to take a deep breath and put this behind you and remind yourself why you come to the rink and why you play hockey.’ They need to spend some time with their families over Christmas and go find that passion.” It’s a much different team compared to what Alalouf had to work with a year ago when the Canadians featured four of the league’s top 11 scorers, including scoring champion Owen Seidel who is now with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds. With just three veterans on the roster, goals have been hard to come by this season with not one player among the top 25 in scoring.

Greater Vancouver Canadians Andrew Bennett fends off Cariboo Cougars’ Devin Sutton during Sunday’s B.C. Major Midget Hockey League game. Still, the team was playing with plenty of grit and was grinding out wins, with an 11-8-3 record before this rough stretch. “It’s like I said at the start of the season, this is a big core group with nothing really at the top end but nothing at the low end either,” continued Alalouf. “For some reason we are struggling with the defensive side right now. We have flipped the lines three or four times but chemis-

try wise it’s still a challenge”. “These two weeks off will let the guys step back from it a bit. We like this team and think they can be successful. They just need to keep battling.” The Canadians currently sit in eighth place with a 11-12-3 record. They will return to action Jan. 9-10 with a trip to Nelson to take on the Kootenay Ice.

Pacers top Marlins to capture Gair Classic in New West Delta Pacers capped off a hectic two week start to the senior boys basketball season by capturing the Bob Gair Classic at New Westminster Secondary School. The Pacers completed a 3-0 run with an 81-57 win over Richmond’s McNair Marlins in Friday’s championship game. Grade 11 standout Jas Singh earned MVP honours, averaging nearly 30 points and 15 rebounds per contest while also coming close to 10 assists as well. A solid tournament for Cam Ratzlaff secured the Grade 11 a spot on the all-star team, while Grade 10 point guard William Khu was named Player of the Game in the final.

The week actually got off to a bumpy start as Kwantlen Park blasted Delta 84-57 in Fraser Valley West League play, dropping the locals record to 2-1. Head coach David Craig saw a far better performance in New West at both ends of the floor. “We played poorly Monday but rebounded with a much better effort in New West,” said Craig. “The guys have started to buy in to playing defence and rebounding.” The Pacers opened the tournament with an 83-64 win over Argyle, then advanced to the final with a 68-58 victory against Queen Elizabeth. It hasn’t taken Craig long to discover the

parity in senior boys basketball throughout the Lower Mainland. His Pacers are still holding down honourable mention status in the provincial AAA rankings, however, it means little in the way of separation from so many teams. Kwantlen Park is not even ranked, while the Pacers also had their hands full in narrow league wins over Princess Margaret and LA Matheson. Delta will return to action Jan. 5 with a league encounter against White Rock Christian, before heading to St. Thomas More in Burnaby for the annual Chancellor Tournament Jan. 6-9.

Junior Boys Basketball

South Delta Sun Devils made it three wins in four games in the Delta Junior Boys Basketball League with a hard-fought 59-57 victory over Burnsview last week.

South Delta Sun Devils senior girls basketball team put together a huge second half to produce a thrilling come-frombehind victory in its season opener. Trailing the Tamanawis Wildcats by 24 points at the break, the Sun Devils rallied for 65-60 win, tripling their offensive production over the final two quarters. Kassidy Nicholls, one of just three seniors on the team, led the charge with 30 points and seven rebounds. Another Grade 12, Julia Adams was a force in the paint with 15 rebounds, seven points and four assists. Grade 11 point guard Amanda Minni chipped in with 11 points, while Simran Dhaliwal added seven rebounds. “Each player played a hard game, fought for rebounds, baskets and steals,” said South Delta coach Jason Knight. “Basketball is truly a team

even has two Grade 10s — Jenny Campbell and Nicole Salas. Trey Melton rounds out the coaching staff. The Sun Devils will enjoy the holiday break before resuming action in the Fraser Valley Tier II West League on Jan. 5 at North Delta.

Wedding to take place March 9, 2008

FILTHUTH, John June 1st, 1948 - December 16th, 2015 With heavily burdened hearts we announce John’s passing. He battled with the determination of a warrior these past ten months, overcoming many insurmountable obstacles. An avid outdoorsman, John found peace navigating the twists and turns of the Vedder river - wielding his fly rod with the eloquence of a bard. His genteel nature transcended into a deep love for the environment and all manner of creatures therein. By many he will be remembered for his renewable energy crusade. For others, his iconic “voice of lacrosse” will endlessly echo within the halls of the Ladner arena. To his family; John will always be a Led Zeppelin loving, film and car aficionado who frequently answered the door in his underwear. In everyone, his comforting chortle of a laugh will continue to resonate. Wife Maria, son Troy, daughter Jessica and extended family welcome friends and neighbours to attend requiem mass Saturday January 2nd at 11am in the courtyard chapel of Oceanview Cemetery, Burnaby. Coffee and tea will be served at the family home 1021 56A Street from 2-4pm. The family thank the community for their tremendous support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders. In the words of his fallen son Brandon: “For my family I will live on in my friends and for my friends I will live on in my family.” We will love and miss you always.

HARVEY, John Alexander 1930 - 2015 It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of John Alexander Harvey who passed away peacefully at Delta Hospice on Saturday, December 19th after a brave battle with cancer at the age of 85. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret and sons Andrew (Zandra), Neil (Carmen) and Ian (Tracy) and grandchildren Michele, Megan, Katrina, Maddison and Jacob and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be forever in our hearts as a great husband, father, grandfather and uncle. John was born in Walton on Thames, England and lived the early part of his life in Weybridge, Surrey where he attended St. Georges College and played on the first XV rugby team. After his 3 years of service playing Rugby for the British Army, he decided to move to Canada in 1953. He spent his early years in Canada with family in Saskatchewan and eventually married the love of his life Margaret Thomas of Llanelli, Wales. After 10 years in Saskatchewan he was transferred to Winnipeg while working for Allied Chemicals where the family lived till 1969. He was offered a new job with Steel Brothers in British Columbia in February 1969 which he accepted and eventually settled in Tsawwassen. John was a district commissioner for Scouts Canada in Winnipeg and so helped start the first Sea Scout troop in South Delta. His love of the Sea led him to the founding of the Tsawwassen Yacht Club where he served as Commodore from 1974 -1975. He soon bought his first sail boat and spent many years taking his family on trips up and down the coast and through the local islands. John was a big proponent of the building of St. Davids Anglican Church and then the building of the Abbeyfield Houses where he served as a director until only a few months ago. After his sailing days were over John spent his winters with his love Margaret in El Mirage, Arizona. He enjoyed his retirement and his summers were spent at the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club working on the greens and actively enjoying bowls. In Lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospice Society or Delta hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. A celebration of John’s life will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner on Monday, Dec 28th at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.
