Why do you need to join a running clinic to GET FIT?

It’s early January and you’re thinking about getting back in shape for the twentieth time since you finished high school but somehow, every year something gets in the way. Maybe it’s the kid’s hockey practice that lands on the same night or your husband or wife goes curling on the same day as the clinic night, so you never seem to commit to joining the running clinic. The first thing you need to do when you start any fitness program is commit to the program and stick to it. Consistency is the key to any fitness program and it’s something that we need to make part of our lives to get or stay in shape. Make a commitment to a routine and book your time for yourself just like you would for a client or your kid’s sports practice. As an owner of a running store for over 23 years I have heard every excuse in the book for not being able to work out and my answer to them is always the same. There are no excuses for not working out, only “choices” to work out or not. Instead of going for a walk or run when your kid is at hockey practice you chose to have a coffee and stay and watch the practice. Instead of working out at lunch time you chose to go shopping in the mall or have a few beers with one of your clients. We all have excuses but what we need to do is make smarter choices. When you join our running clinics we will offer every level of walking and running groups to help you achieve your goal. Whether that is training for your first 5 km, doing the Sun Run or training for a faster Half Marathon. Our training clinics are all 12 to 16 weeks long which gives your body time to adapt to working out and achieve your initial goal of getting into better shape without getting injured. Most runners or walkers get injured in the first six weeks because they try to do too much too fast. Slow easy running or walking will help you to burn more fat, get your weight down and allow your body to get used to the ground forces. For anyone that is new to a training program you should do all off your workouts at this intensity for at least 12 weeks or so. If you already have a base of training then you can add interval workouts that we offer on Tuesday nights to get faster or Tempo runs on Thursday nights to help with your race day pacing. No matter what your current fitness level is we can help you get fitter, get faster and train smarter. We hope to see you at the Clinics in January. NEW FOR 2016 $200 fee for a whole year’s worth of workouts. This new format will allow you to run or walk in all of our Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Workouts for the whole year. This is a great savings for the year and will give you access to over 90 workouts. Sponsored by Saucony and includes a Tech tee and RunInn $20 coupon.

he past few weeks have been a rollercoaster ride for new Delta MP Carla Qualtrough. Not only did the human-rights lawyer, Paralympic swimmer and mom of four bounce back from an unsuccessful run for school board last year to beat Conservative cabinet minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay in October’s federal election, she became the first Liberal elected in these parts in almost 50 years. It’s a feat that’s not lost on the new MP, but the win did not come easily. “There’s no substitute for hard work. My team probably got sick of it, but it’s just like in swimming, you’ve got to do the laps. My team, they worked their butts off,” Qualtrough said in a recent interview with the Optimist. Gaining momentum in traditionally Conservative South Delta took some time, she said, noting the longer campaign — at 11 weeks it was twice as long as recent ones — likely worked in her favour. “It just gained this momentum, you know,

and it started out people paign, helped as well. would whisper to me, ‘I’m “We ran a pretty posivoting for you, but you tive campaign. has already been back and forth between Delta and Ottawa several times. However, Qualtrough said she has made establishing her presence in Delta a priority. “One of the things that I am very hyper sensitive to is remaining rooted here in Delta and remaining available to people here in Delta regardless of where the cabinet posting takes me or where the different committees I’m on take me I need people to feel like I’m here and I’m accessible and I’m available.” Qualtrough and her staff are currently working on setting up constituency offices in both North Delta and South Delta. In addition to the dual cabinet postings, Qualtrough has also been appointed to two cabinet committees — the diversity and inclusion committee and she is vice-chair of the open and transparent government committee, which is looking into democratic reform. “It’s a huge deal. I’m a bit geeky when it comes to this kind of thing so I’m ridiculously enthusiastic about it,” said Qualtrough, who did her undergraduate degree in constitutional history.

Democratic and electoral reform were a major pillar in the Liberal party’s election campaign. “I think one of the challenges we’re facing as a group is priorities…” she said. “We all have mandate letters, they’re all very public, and we have to figure out how we can all achieve those goals and in what order. We said we’d do some things quick and we’re going to have to prepare to wait on some other things.” One of the longerterm projects for Qualtrough and the Ministry of Persons with Disabilities is the creation of the Canadians with Disabilities Act. “There’s a significant legislative gap in disability issues in Canada around accessibility and inclusion and while we have very strong anti-discrimination laws, you have to wait until somebody’s discriminated against in order to help them,” she said. “What we need to do is create a legislative tool that helps us avoid discrimination and exclusion from the beginning… It’s pretty exciting and that will be cutting edge if we do it right, which I intend to do my best to achieve.”

South Delta got a clearer picture of what stores are coming to Tsawwassen Commons. Walmart and Rona were already confirmed, but retailers such as Canadian Tire, Petsmart, Mark’s Work Warehouse and Dollarama were announced, joining 200 stores, including 16 anchors, at the adjacent Tsawwassen Mills. Saks OFF5th was recently announced as one of the anchors at Mills, joining Bass Pro Shops. Both malls are set to open in October 2016.

Ladner dog walker Emma Paulsen received a six-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges of public mischief for making a false police report and causing an animal to continue to be in distress after leaving six dogs to die in the back of her truck the previous spring. She also received a 10-year ban on owning animals and lifetime ban on caring for animals for money.

Delta police Chief Jim Cessford retired in February after leading the department for 20 years. The affable Cessford, who had spent the earlier part of his policing career in Edmonton, was the country’s longest-serving police chief. In the summer, Neil Dubord was sworn in as Cessford’s replacement.

After Delta’s heritage committee turned over every stone possible, nothing could stop the demolition of the historic Kittson House in East Ladner. How to save and preserve heritage buildings turned out to be a much discussed issue this year with the municipality dealing with several development applications involving historic homes. The heritage committee continues to work on a strategy that will finally come to Delta council this coming year.

The Delta Hospital Foundation celebrated a record donation of $2.5 million from the Toigo family, money that will go toward expanding the laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments. In the fall, following the 17th annual Moonlight Gala, which raised over $320,000, the foundation announced it had reached its $7.5 million fundraising goal for the project.

Port Metro Vancouver’s application to build Terminal 2 was put on hold after the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency requested additional information, which was submitted a few weeks ago. Local activists are continuing to line up to take shots at PMV’s environmental assessment of the proposal at Roberts Bank, while Delta council this month also said the assessment has significant deficiencies that need to be addressed.

October

Fraser Health announced it will strengthen surgical services at Delta Hospital, but made it clear the enhancements are aimed at day surgeries. Holding a couple of wellattended community meetings earlier in the year with the Friends of Delta Hospital, doctors at the hospital had raised concerns about the surgical program, which they said does not operate at the same level as other hospitals in the region. They met with the health minister as well.

August

Liberal candidate Carla Qualtrough bucked history in October’s federal election by easily defeating Conservative cabinet minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay to capture the reconfigured riding of Delta. At the end of an 11-week campaign, Qualtrough’s margin of victory was more than 9,000 votes. She was subsequently named to the federal cabinet as minister of sport and persons with disabilities.

November

Brent Seabrook brought the Stanley Cup to Tsawwassen in August for the third time in six years. The Chicago Blackhawks defenceman paraded the cup on a Zamboni along 56th Street on his way to the South Delta Recreation Centre. Seabrook grew up in Tsawwassen playing in the South Delta Minor Hockey Association and later with the Delta Ice Hawks.

A more than two-year fight against a plan to erect radio transmission towers near the Point Roberts border ended in victory for local residents in November when BBC Broadcasting Inc. decided not to appeal a Skagit County Superior Court ruling. The company’s application to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers about 330 metres from the border had earlier been rejected by Whatcom County because they exceeded height limits in the American peninsula.

December

September

In a narrow vote in December, Tsawwassen First Nation members rejected a proposal to build an LNG plant on Tsawwassen lands. Fiftythree per cent of members that voted didn’t support the plan that would have provided the TFN and its members an estimated $14 million in revenues annually. On a separate front, an environmental assessment is getting underway on an application by WesPac Midstream Vancouver LLC to build an LNG export facility adjacent to the FortisBC plant in Tilbury, which is undergoing a major expansion.

Alberta’s new premier, Rachel Notley suggested Delta’s Roberts Bank might be a better option for the contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The firstterm New Democrat premier had already indicated support for Kinder Morgan Inc.’s $5.4-billion oil pipeline twinning plan, which has drawn heated opposition from such cities of Burnaby and Vancouver as well as environmental groups.

Animal shelter has community centre feel

Municipally-run facility has successful year with strong adoption rates and expanded programs SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s becoming more like a community centre and less like a pound. That’s how Delta Community Animal Shelter manager Sarah Jones describes the municipally-run facility that has enjoyed another successful year of strong adoption rates, expanded program offerings and community involvement. “We’re a community centre for animal lovers,” says Jones. “We’re trying to incorporate new things and want to be a resource for the community. We don’t want to be just a pound because that’s not what we are anymore. We want to unite animal lovers and nurture those

relationships in the community.” Opened two years ago, the animal shelter at the corner of Tilbury and Hopcott roads in the Tilbury industrial area provides appropriate space for dogs, cats, and small animals while they await forever homes. It features 18 dog pens, including undercover outdoor areas, two covered dog runs, five separate cat rooms, and space for small animals, shelter staff and volunteers. Thanks to social media, adoption rates have been “amazing” this year, says Jones, noting the shelter also takes in animals from other communities through the Travelling Tales program. The shelter still has a

theless and she’s hoping people consider them. When it comes to adopting puppies, Jones says they prefer families with younger children so the puppies grow up with the kids.

“We don’t get a lot of dogs that are suitable for young kids, so it’s when the puppies come, then we can help the families,” she says. As far as cats, the socalled kitten season when the shelter is usually overwhelmed wasn’t so bad this year, with Jones speculating word has finally got out about the need to spay or neuter. “Cats are still definitely our number one residents, especially the ones that have needs,” she says. The shelter also had an influx of bunnies this year but that number has gone down recently thanks in part to a sanctuary taking in some of the animals deemed less social. Jones says owners reclaiming lost pets has

been strong thanks to the Internet as well as microchip identification. A number of free pet owner classes were introduced this year, ranging from introduction to trick training, dog bite prevention for families and weight control tips for pets, and more will be offered next year. The shelter will also be holding microchip clinics for a low fee. The shelter also introduced a Tales for Tails reading program for kids this year in which young people can practice their skills by reading stories aloud to animals that enjoy the interaction. lot can happen in a year — you only have to look to Carla Qualtrough for proof of that. At this time last year, Qualtrough was far from a political star, just over a month removed from a distant 13th place showing in the Delta school board election. Today, she’s not only the newly-minted Liberal MP for Delta, she’s also the federal minister of sport and persons with disabilities, one of just three B.C. ministers in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. It isn’t terribly surprising Qualtrough, a well-spoken human rights lawyer, former Paralympic athlete and mother of four, is our representative in Ottawa given she’s clearly qualified for the position, but the fact she’s doing it as a Liberal comes as a bit of a shock. Voters in these parts buck the trend provincially by electing the legislature’s lone independent, but when it comes to the federal scene, we’ve been steadfast in our support of the party at the furthest right of the political spectrum. How loyal are we to those occupying such ground? Well, the last time South Delta voters elected a Liberal, the Vancouver Canucks were still a couple of years away from joining the National Hockey League. All that changed in 2015. The 11-week campaign actually ended up backfiring on the Conservatives as you could sense people around here – and presumably across the country – began warming to the idea of Liberal representation. There was already some level of dissatisfaction with Harper and Co., but given we always vote right-of-centre, regardless of what’s going on in the rest of Canada, it still seemed like a pretty steep mountain for Qualtrough to climb. Over the course of the three-month campaign, however, voters went from entertaining the possibility of voting Liberal to seriously considering it to actually taking the plunge. It might have seemed a little strange for some to stray from the nest, but ultimately they felt more comfortable in red than blue this time around. Whether this change sticks will depend on a number of factors, but voters here have shown they will support someone they feel is sticking up for them and their issues. Qualtrough pulled off quite the stunner in 2015, but her work is just beginning.

Annual Christmas Address shines light on darker times

I

watched Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas Address this year on YouTube and recalled hearing her messages in decades passed. Her first formal televised address was back in 1957, when television was still somewhat a novelty. Considering she turns 90 this coming year, it is quite a tremendous accomplishment that she continues to write and deliver these annual greetings with such vigor. The only head of state that I know of that comes even close to her longevity is Fidel Castro — and he is starting to fade. Their longevity is due no doubt in both cases to the fact that they cannot be voted out of office. We generally take a dim view of Presidents for Life, but for the Queen and the Pope, it seems to work. Probably because they have no temporal power. In our family, my mother always made a point of hearing the Queen’s address every Christmas morning. It was a different age back then. You had to be there if you wanted to catch her comments. Nowadays, you can get the Queen’s comments on YouTube at your leisure. The first “wireless” broadcast Christmas address occurred in 1932 and was written by Rudyard Kipling.

Community Comment TOM SIBA

Kipling, among other poems, wrote The Jungle Book and The Man Who Would be King, which were both later on made into feature films. Aspects of Kipling’s work were adopted by the Boy Scouts with the “wolf pack” becoming the basic unit of scouting. Kipling’s Law of the Jungle was “the strength of the Pack is the Wolf and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.” The Scouting motto of “Be Prepared” would have been very apropos in 1932 with the dark clouds of National Socialism gathering in Germany. This year, the Queen spoke of her relation to certain Christmas traditions. She mentioned her great, great grandfather, Prince Albert, organized the first Christmas tree and how the prac-

tice spread. (She also mentioned that Albert started the tradition of having an angel atop the Christmas tree, but the rational the Queen gave differed from the more common story involving Santa Claus and the littlest angel.) The Queen referred to the dark periods that have occurred over the past year, but spoke of all those lighting candles of hope. She quoted from the Gospel of John that “light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it.” It is wonderful to see the attempt in Canada to provide refuge to those who have been driven from their homes in Syria. The number promised by the Liberals was a campaign utterance and unlikely to be achieved. (They will no doubt offset falling short on the refugee numbers by generating a much larger deficit than estimated.) With the ongoing horror show that is the Middle East, it is, as the Queen says, important to light a candle of hope against the darkness, but to also remember Kipling and Be Prepared. We wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year — and if it isn’t prosperous, enjoy it anyway. Tom Siba is a former Publisher of the Delta Optimist.

Amazing year for Delta Hospital Recipe for failure Editor: 2015 has been an extraordinary year for the Delta Hospital Foundation. With the support of our amazing community, there have been some momentous achievements for our hospital and all those who live in Delta. From the $2.5 million donation from Shato Holdings Ltd. and the Toigo family, which led us to announce the expansion of our hospital’s diagnostic services department in March this year, to the wrap up of this $7.5 million campaign at our Moonlight Gala in November, it has been a year full of celebration,

excitement and generous community spirit. These successes are built on the exceptional and heart-warming care that our community receives from the staff at Delta Hospital. There is a team of hundreds of dedicated men and women who work tirelessly every day to give you the best care possible and ensure you go home healthy. Their work is supported by the generosity of this community. A $500,000 endowment gift was received from a patient who passed away in 2014. He had received regular care at Delta Hospital and wanted to “do something

for the angels that watched over me when I was sick.” This is a wonderful example of the heartfelt gifts that we see time and time again — such gifts are a testament to how much we care for those around us. The Delta community is special, and those who live here care so deeply for each other, and for our hospital. The upcoming diagnostic services development is only the first phase of a long term plan to expand Delta Hospital. We will soon be embarking on a large scale expansion of residential care because we know the importance of being able

to stay in the community that you love so dearly. In years to come, we will provide the very best in elder care services right here in Delta. The holiday season provides a chance for us to reflect on the year that has just been: to remember the good times, to think of those who are no longer with us, to spend time with family and friends and to be thankful for the community that surrounds us. Thank you community of Delta for making 2015 an outstanding year for our hospital and for all those that call Delta home. Veronica Carroll Executive Director Delta Hospital

Trudeau ‘broom’ can reduce bureaucracy

Editor: Justin Trudeau has said that he will bring forward suggestions for a revision of the “first past the post” electoral system. No doubt this will lead to extensive discussion and, possibly, a referendum. However there is a far more urgent requirement to improve efficiency, cost and indeed representation. That is to stop the

rapidly increasing cost and proliferation of bureaucracy at local, municipal and regional levels. This used to be called empire building. Consider the multiplicity of city halls, each with staffing and administration, local politicians, police forces, etc. Layers of bureaucracy that find the need to create further levels for hopeful co-ordi-

nation of policy. Metro Vancouver (once GVRD) is an obvious case. This self-sustaining political class and its attendant bureaucracy is now challenged by the Port Metro Vancouver structure. The relationship between federal, provincial, municipal and semi-autonomous Crown corporations is in need of an urgent study to eradicate the hugely

wasteful replicated and excessively costly bureaucracy we have allowed to proliferate. There is an opportunity for the Trudeau new broom to reduce bureaucracy and improve representation at the same time. The comfort level of those administering local government needs perhaps to be disturbed? Peter Duffey

Editor: Re: Limit hasn’t been reached, letter to the editor, Dec. 24 The argument of whether the “limit” on refugees has or has not been “reached” remains to be debated. However, when it comes to fast-tracking 10,000 Syrian refugees by year’s end, and another 15,000 by March 2016, surely we have to ask ourselves whether we are the sort of democracy that encourages responsible and sustainable refugee policies or whether Liberal electoral grandstanding on the refugee question during the election campaign was just another vote-pandering aspect in the political arsenal of electoral refugee politics. Justin Trudeau’s flighty

political arbitrariness of insisting on rushing the arrival of 25,000 refugees to comply with a starryeyed political March 2016 deadline, without a viable mechanism of security vetting and adequate settlement preparations, merely creates a recipe for failure. Political haste in this matter is all the more unjustified since prospective refugees are being chosen from among those presently in Turkish, Lebanese and Jordanian camps, all of whom are not facing imminent danger. Neither the country nor refugees are well served when domestic electoral refugee politics trump sustainable and responsible refugee policies. E.W. Bopp

Strong review process needed for mega projects Editor: The Concerned Professional Engineers (CPE) is a group of registered professional engineers with significant experience in the design, construction and operation of bulk export marine terminals in Canada and around the world. As professional engineers, we understand Canada’s oil industry requires an export route through Canada’s Pacific Coast in order to transport its valuable product to global markets. However, we also understand these mega projects — pipelines, terminals and tanker shipping routes — pose significant risks to the safety of Canadians and to our

natural environment. In our opinion, a strong, independent, sciencebased review and oversight process is required to ensure the success of these projects while risks are kept at a minimum. We believe the National Energy Board (NEB) has failed in its responsibility to implement such a process, particularly for the Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan Transmountain projects. As intervenors in the review of the first project and as commenters for the second, we witnessed firsthand the flaws in the NEB’s process. We are alarmed at the number of critical issues still left unaddressed.

have repeatedly questioned whether it can be cleaned up effectively at all. • Finally, we are concerned the funding structure currently in place to pay for a spill is woefully inadequate and Canadian taxpayers are exposed to these risky projects. In contrast, the marine shipping industry is structured to limit its liability to the greatest possible extent. Our recommendations are that alternate locations for the marine terminals must be seriously considered for both Northern Gateway and Transmountain. For Northern Gateway, moving the terminal from Kitimat to Prince Rupert or

Below is a brief summary of our concerns: • The proponents’ own risk analyses state there is a 10 per cent probability in the 50-year lifetime of either project of a marine spill greater than 5,000 cubic metres (for Northern Gateway) or 8,250 cubic meters (for Transmountain). As a comparison, the April 2015 MV Marathassa spill into Vancouver’s English Bay was estimated to be 2.7 cubic metres. • The product that will be transported, diluted bitumen, is substantially different from crude oil. Very little is known about how it will behave when spilled into a marine environment. Environment Canada’s own scientists

preferably to Port Simpson would eliminate the need for supertankers to navigate 220 kilometres of narrow fjords in the pristine Great Bear Rainforest, a waterway that will be shared every year by several hundred liquefied natural gas tankers. For Transmountain, moving the terminal from the confined Burrard inlet to Roberts Bank, where there is already a coal superport and a container terminal, would provide a clearer route to the open ocean and allow for larger vessels to be used, significantly cutting the number of vessels travelling. These alternatives have been proposed to the NEB, Enbridge and Kinder Morgan many times, and

each time have been disregarded without a thorough review or response. We recently put in a request to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take a look at how the NEB reviews these mega projects in hopes that information can be made available to the public. Canada is uniquely situated to take advantage of its tremendous endowment of petroleum resources while ensuring the preservation of its environment for all Canadians, now and in the future. We hope the new government will consider our proposals. Brian Gunn Concerned Professional Engineers

“I’m going to dust the venetian blinds,” I said. “At least once this year. Same with the bed: I’m going to vacuum underneath it. At least once in 2016.” The husband gave me a high five. “Nice,” he said. “I have a household-related resolution of my own.” In the coming year, he informed me, he would try to leave fewer sneakers inside the front door, especially those he’d just worn

on a run around town. “Brilliant,” I said. “Those ones belong on the porch.” We stared at each other, wondering if we were done. Turns out no. “I’m going to try to remember to not throw red socks in the washing machine with my white shirts,” the husband said. “Nice one,” I said. “How many shirts have you lost that way?” “I don’t want to talk about it,” he said. “Any

others for you?” “Hmm,” I said. Turns out yes. In 2016, I said, I would try to remove some of the 500 reusable shopping bags that have taken up residency on the floor in the car, since I rarely need more than five. And so we’ll move ahead a year, resolutions made. Should you call and try to sell something, I hope I won’t be mean. I didn’t pledge I’d be less brutal — only that I’ll try.

I reminded someone yesterday that Jesus was born amidst a noisy backdrop, with animals braying and cooing, in a season of darkness, and in a time of political turmoil. It wasn’t easy or soothing as some of our Christmas carols suggest. Jesus and his family departed to a foreign country not long after his birth for they were afraid of King Herod’s wrath. They fled to Egypt before settling in Nazareth where Jesus would grow into maturity. A “noisy” world, a “dark” time and “political unrest” in the world — yes, not much has changed in the last 2000 years. Jesus did not promise to make the Christian path an easy one to follow, but promised that whatever path

Debut show for Tsawwassen artist DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Carolyn Drew’s debut art exhibit is now on display at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. The show, titled Art Essence, features her original abstract paintings. Drew, who lives in Tsawwassen, is a selftaught artist who uses acrylics on canvas for her work. You can choose your colours, create a first layer and then throw more colours on as you like, she says.

“You just keep going until you like what you’re creating,” she explains. She started painting in 2010 after taking a fun intuitive painting workshop with her kids to paint a gift for Father’s Day. For the next few years she dabbled and played around, making gifts for her family, art cards and mugs. Now she’s trying to take her art from a hobby to a business. Drew says her work was featured at the local London Drugs for the month of December, she

had a piece used for an e-book cover and had work used by a home staging company for an upcoming TV series. She also puts on art workshops for kids. “Little things have been happening and now I just want to keep it going.” Her exhibit runs until Jan. 18 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. For more on Drew’s PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE art visit her website at www.carolyndrew. Carolyn Drew’s Art Essence exhibit runs until Jan. 18 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. com.

Bantam Rams perfect again Core of minor football team wins its third straight provincial championship South Delta Bantam Rams concluded another perfect season in grand style earlier this month, capturing Football B.C.’s provincial championship with a 44-0 victory over the Victoria Spartans. The triumph not only completed an unbeaten campaign, it capped three years of complete domination by a core of 15-year-olds that produced three B.C. titles — two at Bantam and another at Junior Bantam back in 2013. Along the way, the Rams didn’t lose a single game. The 2015 championship tilt, played at McLeod Stadium in Langley, followed a similar script to so many previous performances. Playing the Spartans for the first time since the early stages of the Vancouver Mainland Football League regular season, South Delta jumped out to a big first quarter lead and never looked back. It was 15-0 before the Rams offence had even stepped onto the field. Michael Calvert returned the opening kickoff for a 69-yard touchdown, then went the distance again on Victoria’s first punt of the game,

this time from 52-yards out. Calvert’s explosiveness was hardly a surprise given he was also a terror on kick returns playing up at the high school level this past season with the South Delta Sun Devils. Rams holder Douglas Jameson scrambled for a “heads-up” two-point conversion, while placekicker Niall Cummins chipped in four converts. Calvert also punted for a rouge to round out a solid special teams performance. On offence, receiver Billy Matwichyna added an 11-yard touchdown run and hauled in another score from five yards out. Offensive lineman Ethan Prasad even got a taste of the end zone when he made a six-yard catch from Calvert on a tackle eligible play. The Rams league-leading defence kept the Spartans off the scoreboard with quarterback sacks by Andrew Kraft, Jarvis Dashkewytch, Rahul Chandra, Cole Howes and Prasad. Interceptions were added by Ethan Troniuk, Rylan Tjahyana and Calvert. Fittingly, middle linebacker Ryan Jensen capped the scoring with a 52-yard “pick six.”

Linebacker Noah Brown and Calvert were awarded the most sportsmanlike and most valuable player awards, respectively. “It was great to see such a balanced performance from our team, in what for many of the players was their final game with the Rams organization”, said head coach Brent Calvert who will see most of his graduating players continuing their careers across the street at SDSS. “The majority of these kids grew up playing football together, and it’s a testament to how much effort they have put in to working together as a team over those years to win three consecutive provincial football titles while amassing a 38-0-0 record.” The Bantam Rams also include players; Mattias Simek, Aneel Nijjar, Johnny Sutherland, Nico Ouellette, Riley Varhaug, Morgan Brumby, Dylan Hampton, Nick Klassen, Riley Gookstetter, Jarrod Bee, Jack Mintzler, Jello Juatco, Keldon Olmstead; team manager Terri Calvert; and coaches Dan Matwichyna, Jeff Stalling, Raj Prasad, Peter Dashkewytch, Matt Kraft and Ward Mintzler.

Ice Hawks get back to work Friday at PJHL Winter Classic Just hours after ringing in the new year, the Delta Ice Hawks will return to work as part of the inaugural Pacific Junior Hockey League Winter Classic in Richmond. It will feature all 10 PJHL teams

playing two games over three days at Minoru Arenas. The event is part of the league’s 50th anniversary celebration and provides a practical format for players to be showcased to junior and college scouts.

The Ice Hawks will take on the Abbotsford Pilots on Friday (4 p.m.) then face the Grandview Steelers on Saturday (7 p.m.). The Ice Hawks will bring momentum into the Winter Classic after putting together

back-to-back wins prior to the Christmas break. Delta travelled to Abbotsford Dec. 18 where it came through with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory. One night later, it was a 4-3 overtime win at Port Moody.

Best wishes for a...
