Myth: Insurance companies won’t warranty the work unless you use their repair shop. Fact: Collision repair shops warranty their work, not the insurance companies. 604.943.6383
It’s not every day that a Canadian teenager receives an award from U.S. President Barack Obama. Then again, Natalie BurtCarrol isn’t your average 17-year-old. The Tsawwassen teen was surprised recently to receive a letter and certificate from the White House congratulating her on her work with Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY). HOBY is a not-for-profit organization that aims to bring young adults together and challenges them to think outside the box when leading and teaching others. Burt-Carrol spent over 100 hours putting together packages
and personalized letters for men and women serving overseas. “Even though I’m not American, I still border with them and they’re still helping against that battle that we’re all in,” says the only Canadian to receive the award. Her other initiatives have included making bracelets for those fighting overseas as well as Project Linus, which provides blankets for children in hospitals. Her list of accomplishments doesn’t end there. As Canada’s ambassador at the World Leadership Conference in Chicago, BurtCarrol had the opportunity to discuss political issues concerning Canada. Ladner’s Ray Ramsay is among the group of 2016 inductees set to join the B.C. Country Music Association Hall of Fame. The music industry veteran said he “just didn’t know what to say” when he found out the news. “I was speechless. Literally. I’m not known for being struck dumb,” he said. He’ll be inducted this spring at the B.C. Country Music Association Hall of Fame show in Langley. Ramsay landed his first job with a record company in 1968 and later joined RCA Canada in 1977. He worked with artists from all music genres along with “the best and sometimes legendary country stars Canada and America had to offer,” including Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. He recalls handling Ray McAuley & Wild County, whose first album had come out just after Ramsay had joined RCA. He said McAuley, who died of a brain aneurism, was something of a “local legend” and described setting up a memorial concert for the artist in 1979 at a venue in Surrey. “We sold the place out, floor to ceiling, wall to wall.” Ramsay said the show honoured McAuley and also launched a posthumous record in a tasteful way. He eventually retired from BMG in 2004. “During Ray’s years as promotions guy for

But where he really got passionate was about the local, B.C. artists. Particularly the rock and country bands, one of which I was a member of,” said B.C. Country Music Association board member Dave Wills. “When he was dealing with media on our behalf, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Though
sometimes gruff on the surface, he was just being papa bear looking out for his musician cubs… that’s where he got the nickname Grizzly.” Ramsay, who writes songs and plays guitar and drums, is still involved in music. He also does charity work with Wigs for Kids BC, a group that raises money for custom-fitted human hair wigs for children and teens who have
suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment or other serious illnesses and essential medications and feeding supplies for children with cancer that are not covered by MSP. “It’s a very worthy cause,” he said. Ramsay moved to Ladner from Steveston in 2002. Other 2016 Hall of Fame inductees include Red Robinson, Denny Eddy, Laurie Thain,
Mike Norman, Farmer’s Daughter, Gerry Leiske, Tammy Ray, Redd Volkaert and John McLaughlin. The induction ceremony will take place during the Hall of Fame show April 10 at Cascades Casino in Langley. Scheduled performers include Denny Eddy, Laurie Thain, Farmer’s Daughter, Tammy Ray, Jess Lee and more. Check ticketweb. ca or call 604-530-2211 for tickets. It’s a 19+ show.
Teen lives by mantra of giving more than she receives
CONTINUED from Page 1 Hearing about the struggles of those living in the Middle East and other countries continues to inspire the teen to help others. “My mom and dad always told me to give more than I can receive,” says the Grade 12 student at Tsawwassen’s Southpointe Academy. Southpointe senior principal Gordon Cogan calls her very mature. “She
has solid leadership skills,” he says. A clarinet player and a keen pianist since the age of four, Burt-Carrol also finds time to enjoy photography. She was an avid rower, hoping to take the sport into post-secondary, however two years ago an accident from a motorcycle exhaust pipe caused second-degree burns along the length of her leg. Competitive rowing would
no longer be the same. “It was crushing to watch as a parent, but she handled it like aces,” says her mother, Della Rae Carrol. “She never complained once.” Having to put aside her passion for rowing, BurtCarrol turned to her love of music. She also finds comfort in acting and theatre, saying it provides a “change of scenery.” “It’s interesting to put on someone else for a lit-
tle bit.” The busy teenager credits her family for the motivation behind her successes. Having endured the loss of both her father and aunt, she remains positive and grateful for having been able to spend 11 years with her father. “He gave me so much even though he was with me for so little of my life,” she says. Reflecting her diverse interests, the aspiring
pediatrician, entrepreneur and bio-ethics enthusiast has many ideas in store for the future, having been interviewed at Princeton and Stanford for admission this September. “I’m still trying to find what life has to offer me.” This summer, BurtCarrol will be a speaker at HOBY. The ambitious teen has one piece of advice for both the young and old: “be curious.”

Delta is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to suspend the review taking place for Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, but is Delta potentially setting itself up to be a fallback location? Delta council recently endorsed a staff recommendation to support the City of Burnaby’s request to ask the federal government to suspend the National Energy Board’s review of the highly controversial project that would see the existing pipeline twinned to

Kinder Morgan is looking to twin a pipeline to Burnaby’s Westridge Terminal. increase capacity from 300,000 barrels of oil per day to 890,000 per day. It would result in a potential increase from five to 34 oil tankers calling upon the Westridge Terminal. The shipping lane that vessels use to reach the terminal in Burrard Inlet, at its closest point, is approximately 10 kilometres from Delta’s Brunswick Point dike. Delta is not a formal intervenor in the NEB review, which would have cost up to $245,000 in legal costs. Instead, the municipality decided to convey concerns through Metro Vancouver, which is an intervenor. Delta has noted a number of issues related to marine traffic and increased risk of spills that could impact the Fraser River estuary. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan asked Delta council to support him in asking the prime minister to suspend the review, given the fact the Liberals promised during last year’s election campaign to review and amend the federal environmental review process. If the process is not suspended by the federal government, the next step following the recent conclusion of oral hearings is for Kinder Morgan to respond to the written evidence submitted by the intervenors. Richmond resident and environmentalist Otto Langer, who is a member of groups lobbying against several projects that could impact the Fraser River in both Delta and Richmond, including Port Metro Vancouver’s proposed Terminal 2, already wrote to Trudeau about the Kinder Morgan plan, saying the NEB assessment is highly suspect. “A fear is that the export terminal may be moved to the Fraser River estuary due to various local government pressures to get
FILE PHOTO
it out of the Burrard Inlet. Both options are untenable,” he said. Kinder Morgan has, so far, stuck with its proposal to route the oil pipeline expansion from Alberta to Burnaby and gave no indication Delta is being considered as an alternate route. However, last summer Alberta Premier Rachel Notley dropped a bombshell suggestion by saying it might be time to get creative and re-route the pipeline further south, saying South Delta is one possibility where it could terminate. A group calling itself Concerned Professional Engineers (CPE) had already filed its opinion with the NEB that Roberts Bank is better suited as a shipping point for Alberta diluted bitumen. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington told the Optimist she hasn’t heard anything more about Roberts Bank being eyed as an alternate location for the pipeline, but it remains a concern. “I have no doubt the powers that be are reviewing the possibility of a pipeline to Deltaport. And the way that the minister of environment provincially has supported every major new development along the Fraser — from jet fuel to coal to natural gas — I have no doubt they will at least be sympathetic to such a proposal,” she said. Although there’s been no indication from Port Metro Vancouver that Roberts Bank is being considered for an oil export facility, Delta council raised red flags about that possibility three years ago. Later this spring, a three-member panel will inform the federal cabinet whether it approves the Kinder Morgan project, but then Ottawa must still make a decision on the $5.4 billion expansion.
Combat identity theft through shred-a-thon Delta Gymnastics partnering with Urban Impacts
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in North America and an important step to prevent it is to properly destroy any sensitive or confidential information. Urban Impact is sponsoring a “shred-a-thon” in Tsawwassen this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Delta Gymnastics Society. “As we have been hosting these events for the last few years, we started receiving many calls from community members early in the new year asking us when we would organize the next Shreda-thon… it has become an annual tradition for many,” said Ana Arciniega, executive director of Delta Gymnastics. “This is the perfect time of the year as we prepare for tax season to clean up office drawers, storage rooms and files and bring them to us for safe disposal.” Businesses and individuals are welcome to bring their bags and boxes of documents to the Tim Hortons parking lot where a shredding truck will be stationed. Donations will be accepted by members

All that popcorn, but still running low on Oscars

Right about this time every year, the husband develops a singular mission: to head, non-stop, to the movies. This, of course, is because the Oscars will be approaching. It will occur to the husband, oh, about mid-February, that the big show is coming, and that he’s seen next to none of the flicks. He’ll be determined to make things right. This year, the Academy Awards hit the airwaves on Sunday. Let’s just say that over the past week or two, the husband’s been eating a good deal of popcorn. “I’m going to The Revenant tonight,” he informed me a few days ago. “Wanna come?” “No,” I replied. “Saw the trailer. Looks violent.” “OK,” he said. “What about The Martian?” “Naw,” I said. “Looks too, um, alien.” And so it’s been going. As of now, the husband has seen not only The Revenant — whatever that means — but also Spotlight, Bridge of Spies and The Big Short. I’d like to join him on a

movie excursion — really, I would — but whenever I consult the listings, I tend to be disappointed. “I’d like to see Room,” I told the husband, “but it’s not showing any more. Same with Brooklyn.” What’s on, the last time I looked, was something called Dirty Grandpa. “What about Mad Max?” suggests the husband. “Mmm, sounds too angry for me,” I said. “Anyway, it’s gone too.” In its place, however, was something called Kung Fu Panda. This, I told the husband, held about as much interest as a movie about a skydiving rhinoceros or a skate-
boarding shark. “OK,” said the husband. “In the absence of any other Oscar nominees, what else is playing?” “The Good Dinosaur,” I said. “And How to be Single.” We decided to take a pass on the single flick, given that we’re pretty happily married and have no plans to cash in the wedding rings. As for the dinosaur movie, well, I told the husband there were other things I’d rather watch. Like, oh, the recharging signal on my cell phone. Or the grout on the bathroom tile. So here we are: four days from the Oscars, and the husband is coming up short. Alas, the remaining films on his must-see list are no longer available. “So anything else playing?” the husband said, resigned to seeing Plan B. “Let’s see,” I said. “The Hateful Eight? Daddy’s Home? Alvin and the Chipmunks Road Chip?” The husband sighed. On this night, at least, we’d watch TV instead, and eat buckets of popcorn at home.

t sure makes that murder charge seem curious. After a coroner’s inquest wrapped up last week into the fatal shooting by a Delta police officer back in 2012, the jury came back with 16 recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. Given the officer at the centre of it all, Const. Jordan MacWilliams, had originally been facing a second-degree murder charge, you would think the inquest’s recommendations would have focused on the tactics used by police in the stand-off that culminated in the death of Mehrdad Bayrami, a distraught Richmond man who had taken an ex-girlfriend hostage in the parking lot of New Westminster’s Starlight Casino. After all, there must has been serious errors in judgment by police, and in particular MacWilliams, for the Crown to take the extremely unusual step of charging an officer with murder for actions carried out in the line of duty. He surely must have contravened protocol for the Crown to take such action. Our first clue that wasn’t the case came last July when the Criminal Justice Branch stayed the charge after its “careful” review found there wasn’t sufficient evidence for continued prosecution. That notion was reinforced last week when the jury at the coroner’s inquest had precious little to say about the way police handled the situation, despite watching a video that chronicled the final two hours of a five-hour stand-off. It made a number of recommendations with regards to mental health, everything from improving access to services to increasing education and awareness, but when it came to the tactical side of things, about all the jury suggested was establishing formal agreements with psychologists to support negotiators. Jurors watched the same video as the Independent Investigations Office and the Criminal Justice Branch, and heard from MacWilliams and other emergency response team officers that were on the scene that fateful day, yet they found little to correct in the way police handled themselves whereas the Crown had previously come to the conclusion there were sufficient grounds for a murder charge. It’s hard to believe the dichotomy between the two outcomes.
Time for all levels of gov’t to admit housing crisis is here
I
t’s time we stop talking about the looming housing crisis and admit we are in one. It will only get worse unless all three levels of government come together to coordinate a plan as well as create some rules around foreign ownership and investment properties. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray recently declared a state of emergency after two people were shot and seven wounded in a tent city called “The Jungle.” Murray leapt into action asking for immediate help from both the federal and state governments to find solutions to the surprising increase in homelessness, which rose 19 per cent over last year. It includes those in tent encampments as well as people living in their cars, although those numbers are likely higher as they are harder to find. If I had to live in my car, I would hide away in some quiet back lane at night and I would find a different spot the next night. If there was a problem, at least I could quickly leave. I would wash up and hang out at recreation centres. I’m a single senior. What if I was a single parent? Many, with more than one child, are doing this. If this poverty gap continues to widen between the haves and the have-nots, there will be a revolution. I know the issue is complicated but the time for col-
Community Comment ML BURKE
laboration and action is upon us. I don’t understand what is taking so long in providing more permanent dwellings for these folks. Temporary shelters are a Band-aid and not what they need. Europe has created little villages out of containers and small houses where people have their own safe space but still live in community, planting vegetable gardens and watching out for each other. A recent letter to the Vancouver Sun from Tsawwassen resident Pat Pettman suggested TransLink should have light rapid transit out to the ferry terminal once the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel opens in 2022. Paterson Park could be a park ‘n ride station for the South Fraser region. This would reduce commuter traffic, which would alleviate the bottlenecks at the Fraser’s North Arm bridges.
I agree on the need for light rapid transit ASAP and if Paterson Park were to be used for this, then let’s combine it with affordable housing and well-designed parkades that go up rather than across the landscape. This would be a great legacy for this Delta council to initiate. Speaking of this council, the Corporation of Delta has asked the Delta Seniors Planning Team to conduct a survey to determine what Delta’s seniors need in the way of housing so they can agein-place. We are in the process of designing this survey that will be distributed throughout Delta over the next two months. The target group is 55+ however a younger adult could fill it out on behalf of an older relative or friend. Watch for it through March and April. Mark your calendars to attend the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre in Ladner on Tuesday, March 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. to hear Isobel MacKenzie, B.C.’s seniors advocate, speak on issues affecting seniors. The first hour she will present her findings and the second hour will be the audience sharing concerns and ideas. This is a free public event for all ages. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Editor: A future-focused government would not be spending billions on a 10-lane car bridge now. Instead it would be using the money, or some of it, to buy the underpinnings for road mileage pricing and congestion pricing. Both are familiar to air travellers and ferry users who pay less for a short than a long trip, and less to travel on a slow day or time than a popular one. Implemented on our roads, these forms of pricing would reward busi-
nesses and individuals for using the roads and bridges we already own efficiently. This would limit and perhaps even remove the need for extra roads and bridges. Implementing road pricing would be a major project, probably too much for the municipalities. But the senior governments are suddenly acting as though they have money for infrastructure. This is infrastructure, though not of a traditional kind. A ride share system, by which you as a driv-
er can pick up a paying passenger who wants to go where you are going, would also be useful infrastructure, and would also reduce the need to plan for more lanes full of cars. Ride sharing would be useful not only in the Lower Mainland, but everywhere in the province, especially where population isn’t dense enough to support a decent bus service. Think, for example, how many lives it could have saved on the Highway of Tears. Gail Neff Bell
Hardship argument beyond South Delta
Editor: Re: Held hostage, letter to the editor, Feb. 19 Wayne Kraan asks why the good citizens of South Delta should have to pay a toll to cross the bridge slated to replace the George Massey Tunnel, citing a hardship to drive to the Alex Fraser Bridge. One could make a similar argument for the citizens of North Delta and all of Surrey once the Pattullo
Bridge is replaced and the bridge to replace the tunnel is built. The only way anyone south of the Fraser River would be able to cross the river without a toll would be to use the Alex Fraser Bridge. It’s time for the province to review its tolling policy and treat all citizens of the Lower Mainland fairly. I believe that all crossings in the Metro Vancouver region should cost the
same: either nothing and we are taxed at an appropriate rate to pay for the infrastructure we want and need, or each crossing carries a small toll If every route costs the same to use, we will see traffic find the quickest route, not just the cheapest. This should alleviate some of the congestion we are seeing on non-tolled crossings now. Lori Mayhew

Mayor correct about politics plaguing new bridge Editor: Re: Mayor at odds with peers, Feb. 19 While I don’t always agree with Mayor Lois Jackson, this time I support her comments 100 per cent. At least three mayors (Gregor Robertson,
Malcolm Brodie and Greg Moore) are not pleased with the province spending a large amount on a bridge and want to spend two more months to study the details. I suspect these pouting mayors are still annoyed the transit plebiscite they
supported last summer was overwhelmingly rejected and they want to delay any progress on a new bridge. Yes, Jackson is right: “… there’s a lot more politics at play here than we would like to admit.” Keith Munro
Destroying our history also takes a toll on our future Editor: I am writing to express my concern for the Rawlins farm house and other heritage buildings in Ladner. I moved from Steveston to Ladner nine years ago
and was happy to see the town reminded me of what Steveston used to be. I am pleading with Delta council to stop the destruction of these older buildings and slow the flow of new construction in our area or
we will no doubt be faced with another Richmond disaster. We should not be so quick to destroy our history, and in doing so our future. J.J Van Mol

Qualtrough says Ottawa to support hiring of 70,000 students SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s a terrific opportunity for young people as well as for Delta businesses. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough offered that positive message Friday morning as she announced her government’s plan to double the funding this year for the Canada Summer Jobs program. Speaking to an audience at the North Delta Recreation Centre, the minister of sport and persons with disabilities announced the government will support the hiring of up to 70,000 students across the country this year, approximately double the 34,000 hired under the program last year. Approximately 150 students were hired in the Newton-North Delta and Delta-Richmond East ridings last year by employers funded under the program. “It is time to invest in young Canadians to help them develop the skills and acquire the critical work experience they need to successfully start their career and con-

whom said the program will provide even more valuable work experience for youth. Hamilton said Delta is rich in employment opportunities with both small and larger businesses, and not just in the hospitality industry. He said he will start introducing the expanded program to all his contacts in the business community. Noting it’s an extremely important first step for
students, Huntington said she was particularly pleased with one element in the program that offers employers an additional $3,000 to make provisions to be able to bring on disabled students. Jackson said the Corporation of Delta will be applying to hire 15 students this summer for youth programs. The application deadline has been extended to March 11.

Swim training for the 2016 Delta Splash N’ Dash. Where and when does this take place? We decided to start meeting at 7am Saturday morning at the Ladner Leisure Centre. It was the only free time we had available – while the kids and husbands were likely still asleep. How often do you participate? We get together as a group every week. We are all at different swimming levels, and training for this event is a priority for us, so we swim 1-2 times/week on our own. How long have you been involved? We’ve been involved since the Splash N’ Dash format was announced. Why did you get involved in this activity? We all have the same goal – the 2016 Splash N’ Dash. Having a specific goal helps keep us motivated, and swimming with likeminded moms helps keep us focused. What do you like best about this activity? It’s a great low impact workout, a wonderful way to work off the stress from work and meeting your friends at the pool is a real motivator on those early mornings when you need that extra push to get out of bed. How does it benefit your life? We all benefit from the friendships we make and the improvements to our health and fitness. It feels good to be a role model for the kids and to demonstrate that if you practice and try hard, you can accomplish your goals. What other things do you do to keep active? We play with our kids! Other activities include biking, running and group fitness classes. Did you know Delta is offering a unique event this year? It’s the Adult Splash N’ Dash - a 600m swim and a 5km run! If you have plans to try a triathlon in the future, this is a great opportunity for you to test the water. For more information about this event, the Kids of Steel Triathlon or to view Delta’s aquatic facility schedules, visit Delta.ca, stop by your local recreation centre to speak with our knowledgeable staff, or call 604-952-3000.

Granny’s ethics drive business HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant earns annual Rotary award
“What would Granny want?” With that mantra top of mind, Rhonda Doram left 20 years of corporate life to found and develop her successful HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant business in Delta, which won the top award at Rotary’s fifth annual Business Ethics Award Delta, as a model of ethical business practice. Not only Granny’s needs, but her standards, have driven Doram and her team in what they do to serve the home support needs of seniors and in how they do it. “As founder and CEO, I am immensely proud of our amazing management team and lifestyle assistants for all the above and beyond effort they bring each day in service of our clients,” said Doram, who dedicated the award to her grandmother, who was the inspiration for the business. “As well, I’d like to gratefully thank everyone involved in the awards and ethics program,” she said. At a dinner and ceremony last Friday at the Delta Town & Country Inn, three other Delta companies were also recognized
as good models of ethical business practice: 505Junk, Komal’s Kreations and Choices. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton both spoke highly of the importance of ethical business practices and the value of the link in the awards program to university business students. As guest speaker, Huntington gave first hand examples of ethical behaviour in business as well as government and, in some cases, the lack of it. The Rotary clubs of Ladner, North Delta and Tsawwassen and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Enactus business student chapter, which administered the nomination process, sponsored the event. Award program leader Leslie Abramson said all the finalists have a clear understanding that ethics is good for business. Being first in business is not just about being the fastest and most powerful, at any cost, it’s also about focus on the community, giving back and service. That, said Abramson, leads to sustainability.

Local students flash mob for acceptance
It was an inspiring sight as Delta students joined thousands of others last week to participate in a flash mob during a Vancouver Giants game. Grades 4 to 7 students from Tsawwassen’s Pebble Hill Elementary joined around 5,000 other students from throughout the Lower Mainland last Wednesday for Acceptance Day, wearing pink shirts in an annual event in recognition of AntiBullying Day, which takes place today. Dale Saip, the Giants’ vicepresident of business development and a long-serving Delta school trustee, said they were proud to host the event for a fourth year, bringing to light the serious message of acceptance. Schools all across Delta today are taking part in various Anti-Bullying Day activities, wearing pink shirts as part of Anti-Bullying Week, aimed at bringing awareness to bullying and promoting acceptance. Activities include Holly Elementary having an 11 a.m. Diversity/Acceptance Assembly to share messages of inclusion, acceptance, diversity and kindness. All students, staff, and parents are invited to support the “Bullying Stops Here” campaign.

Rowers from Delta Deas put heart into fundraiser

There’s a new chef in town at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. Adrian Dias, who recently plied his trade for the Fairmont hotel chain, has been running his Buenos Dias Café at KinVillage for approximately a month. A chef since 1990, he also spent time working in Hong Kong.
Fun and frivolity were the order of the day recently as the Delta Deas Rowing Club hosted its annual Race of Hearts fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Though weather was wet and cold, Race of Hearts competitors’ enthusiasm for friendly competition was never dampened. With adult members teaming up with junior members, the day’s competition tapped a wide range of skills well beyond their blindfolded rowing capabilities, including foraged art creation, bucket basketball bowling, oar levitation, head banging and scavenger hunting. After many high fives and a lot of laughter, a total of $415 was raised for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Tsawwassen’s Dylan Ainsworth talks to Regina media after agreeing to a new contract with the Roughriders.
Ainsworth part of new Green era Former SDSS football star reaches new deal to remain in Saskatchewan Dylan Ainsworth is looking forward to a new environment in his third CFL season with the exact same team. The 23-year-old from Tsawwassen agreed to new contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, just minutes before he was about to become a free agent. Ainsworth was selected 11th overall by the Riders in the 2014 college draft and has established himself as a special teams standout with 30 tackles in 35 games. Now, he is looking to take the next step of his career and become part of the Riders’ regular defensive line rotation. To do that, he will have to impress an entirely new coaching staff, including head coach Chris Jones and defensive line coach Ed Philion. Saskatchewan made wholesale changes after a 3-15 season, hir-
ing Jones away from Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos. He promptly released some highprofile veteran players and it was the numerous changes that made Ainsworth’s return hardly a certainty. “I had a chance to talk to coach Jones, as well as Ed Philon, and both had good things to say about their plans for me,” said Ainsworth. “It then came to my agent speaking with the team and getting everything squared away. It was definitely something I wanted done. Everyone wants to see their value in an open market but it was also a very busy market (with a lot of available players) as well. I’m almost glad I didn’t have to see what happens.” Ainsworth is back home working out on a regular basis, knowing
the opportunity that awaits when he returns to Regina sometime in May. “They have plans for me to be out there on the defensive side of the ball but it’s up to me to prove that I deserve to be there,” he continued. “I will still be contributing on special teams still but the ball is in my court now. It’s up to me to decide where I want to go with it. “It seems like a good fit with a championship coaching staff coming in here and trying to turn it around. I’m excited with my own personal opportunities and what this team is going to do next season.” Ainsworth was a two-way standout coming through the South Delta Rams and South Delta Sun Devils programs. He then enjoyed a stellar university career at Western.
The Delta Ice Hawks are on the verge of pulling off a major upset in the opening round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Ice Hawks have opened up a commanding 3-0 series lead on the defending champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack and had an opportunity to complete the sweep last night in Ladner. The Wolf Pack were 21 points better than Delta in the regular season standings. The Ice Hawks produced an impressive 5-0 victory in the series opener then took two more on the weekend in North Vancouver. Rookie Sam Kozlowski had a hat trick and five points to lead Delta to a dominating 9-3 triumph on Friday night. The recently turned 18-yearold Tsawwassen native produced all his goals in the opening period as the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Game three 24 hours later was a much tighter affair with the Hawks leaning on Latrace’s 37-save first star performance. Delta took a 1-0 lead into the third period on a goal by Evan Grannery when the Wolf Pack pulled even at the 12:08 mark. Just 43 seconds later, Dhaliwal converted a feed from Kozlowski and Michael Rand to give the Hawks the lead back for good.

Logan Schuss continued his torrid offensive stretch in helping the Vancouver Stealth make an improbable comeback Saturday night. The Ladner standout had a goal and seven assists as the Stealth roared back from 6-0 first quarter deficit to defeat the Calgary Roughnecks 14-13 in overtime at the Langley Events Centre. Schuss has recorded at least eight points in four consecutive games and currently sits third in National Lacrosse
League scoring with 45 points, including 13 goals, in eight games. Vancouver was trailing 12-5 in the third quarter when Schuss helped launch a huge comeback by assisting on goals from Rhys Duch and Jordan Duston. He then found the net himself as part of four straight goals in the fourth quarter, before Calgary pulled even in the final minute of play. Schuss capped his big night by setting up Corey Small’s overtime winner.

Mara passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Thursday, February 18, 2016 in the loving arms of her granddaughter, Carmen Lloydsmith. Mara was born in Croatia, one of five children. She and her two children, Ann and Frank, came to Canada in October, 1960 to join her husband, Frank, in Nanaimo, BC. Mara was a loving woman who treasured her family, friends, neighbours and relatives. Always ready with a kind word, a hot meal, and a willingness to help Mara was deeply loved by all who were a part of her life. She made friends easily and was always quick with a thank you or a kind word. Her extraordinary faith in God was unwavering and she spent many hours reading her favourite passages from the Bible. She was a beautifully creative person and her exquisite needlepoint, sewing, crocheting, and stitching remind those who loved her of her remarkable spirit. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, dispensing loving advice. She was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, in Nanaimo and Ladies Auxiliary of St. Peter’s Church. She moved to Delta, BC from Nanaimo in 2004 to be close to her family where she resided until her passing. She will be sadly missed. Predeceased by her husband, Frank Becir.
