Lead in water at most schools District issues advisory to parents after more tests done SANDOR GYARMATI

Elevated lead levels have now been detected in the drinking water at most Delta schools. The school district issued an advisory to parents last Friday (http://facilities.deltasd.bc.ca/ water-quality) that noted tests revealed a majority of schools examined showed lead above the maximum acceptable level

in “pre-flush” pipe water. The district stated many of those schools showed “slightly positive” levels, however, the results were still above the maximum limit. Testing continues as lead above the maximum allowable limit was found at several schools after “post-flush” testing. It has prompted the daily flushing of some sinks and drinking fountains and the removal of

others. In South Delta, flushing protocols remain in effect at South Park, Beach Grove, Pebble Hill, Holly, Port Guichon, Hawthorne, Cliff Drive and Ladner elementary schools. DISTRICT: see Page 3 PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI

MLA can’t silence applause Huntington’s bid to improve decorum in legislature doesn’t find any support SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

At least she didn’t have to put up her dukes. Responding to her call to put a lid on all the applause and desk thumping MLAs partake in during question period in the provincial legislature, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington was met with prolonged desk thumping and cheering from Liberal and New Democrat politicians in the chamber last week. The independent MLA had put forward a motion for the premier and opposition leaders to ban applause during question period, saying it would have been a small step toward improving decorum and would allow more time for questions and answers. She noted this spring the legislature will have spent close to three-anda-half hours on applause, wasting close to 20 minutes a week. The constant applause feeds a hyperpartisan tone and drowns out any meaningful exchange, she said. This spring, the speaker has reprimanded MLAs several times for their poor behaviour, Huntington added. “It is just an easy, quick way to restoring a bit of dignity and civility to the house. Students watch from the gallery and are so disturbed by the adolescent behaviour. One

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington couldn’t find support on either side of the legislature for her motion to ban applause during question period. She says it wastes time and feeds the partisan nature of the proceedings. told me that they would get sent to the principal’s office for acting like members do,” she told the Optimist last week. Huntington said 323 years ago the House of Commons of the United Kingdom banned hissing and applause from its proceedings, eliminating disturbances when members were speaking. She also told the legislature

the national assembly in Quebec banned applause from question period last year. Delta North Liberal MLA Scott Hamilton said it’s been a tradition to support your ministers, while the opposition supports its critics. “Little appreciation has been given to back in 2005 when the premier of the day, Gordon Campbell,

actually increased the length of question period from 15 minutes to 30. It was all part of an open government strategy. She (Huntington) says she has been timing it, but while we may spend 20 minutes a week clapping, there’s an additional hour of question period that never existed prior to 2005,” Hamilton said. Things in the legisla-

ture may seem raucous to Huntington, but they haven’t gone as far as what happened in the Nova Scotia legislature three years ago when a cabinet minister was charged with assaulting another member. Politicians there said the scuffle between two men inside a washroom near the chamber was an embarrassing example of a lack of decorum.

District looking for long-term solution for drinking water

CONTINUED from Page 1 It’s also in effect for South Delta Secondary and the Delta Manor Education Centre. No issues were detected at Delta Secondary in Ladner, so the protocol there was lifted. “Facilities staff is actively looking into sustain-

able, long-term solutions for our drinking water, and will be implementing these upgrades or changes as soon as possible,” the district stated. The district first informed parents a couple of weeks ago that elevated lead levels had been detected in the drink-

ing water at three older schools. The facilities department put together an initial mitigation plan that included removing suspect drinking fountains, school administrators in older schools conducting daily morning flushes of all pipes, while water test-

ing was conducted in all schools built before 1989. The district noted there are no lead pipes in any of the schools’ water systems, so the source of the problem is likely external pipe soldering done years ago. The province earlier this year told districts to evaluate their water quality and

establish plans. According to Health Canada, blood lead levels of Canadians have declined significantly over the past 30 years, but there is new scientific evidence that health effects are occurring below the current Canadian blood lead intervention level.

Twelve-year-old Ladner resident Morgan Levins has been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. The diagnosis was made after a lump was found on Morgan’s collarbone that continued to grow in size. Morgan was taken to B.C. Children’s Hospital for treatment and is currently on her second round of chemotherapy. The full treatment is expected to last nine months to a year. Family friend Kirsty Jansen says the ordeal has been tough on the family. “You don’t think that this is something that is

going to happen to you,” she says. “It’s been really difficult, it’s been very emotional, and I think the family is holding up very well.” A GoFundMe page has been created to help Morgan’s parents, Kerry and Carsen Levins, pay for expenses, including gas, parking at the hospital and care for their son, Max, who’s a toddler. The Landing Pub will also be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, June 4 that will include a silent auction, 50/50 draw, meat draw and toonie toss. The Landing will be donating a percentage of the night’s bills to the family. Jansen encourages everyone to attend the

very appreciative family. “They are the nicest family. Morgan is such a sweet kid, does well in school, just really kindhearted, same with Kerry and Carsen,” she says. “They don’t want handouts, they don’t want to be the centre of attention. Municipal debt set to be paid off by 2018

Chasing bad guys with technology!

JESSICA KERR

Delta police Const. Jim Gravel demonstrates the department’s latest technology, StarChase, for Mayor Lois Jackson as well as members of the Delta police board and Delta Police Foundation. StarChase allows officers to tag a fleeing vehicle with a GPS tracking device. Police can then track a vehicle from a safe distance instead of initiating a potentially dangerous high speed chase. The department began looking at the technology last year after seeing an increase in the number of vehicles fleeing from police. Delta is the first department in Canada with the technology, which was purchased with the help of the Delta Police Foundation. The technology is currently being installed in eight police cars that will be dispatched throughout the municipality.

Delta continues to pay down its debt. In 2015, the municipality decreased its debt by $1 million and by the end of 2016 it will be less than $300,000, director of finance Karl Preuss told civic politicians last week. The municipality has not taken on any new debt since the 2002 Sungod Recreation Centre referendum. That debt, which was approved by North Delta residents and is being paid solely by homeowners in that area, will be paid off in 2022. The rest of the municipality’s general debt is scheduled to be paid off by 2018. In 2000, Delta’s debt sat at $58 million so in 2002 the decision was made to focus on paying down the debt and moving to a payas-you-go system.

Delta’s shrinking debt was one of several items covered last week as Preuss presented the annual audited financial statements. Last year was a busy one for the municipality with $38 million in capital improvements completed, including the Boundary Bay Airport heritage hangar and runway improvements, the Dugald Morrison turf field, dike works and the expansion of the North Delta Recreation Centre. It was also a busy year for new construction, with more than $200 million in building permits and new construction completed. “New construction is an essential component, and a good indicator of economic vibrancy of the municipality,” Preuss said. In terms of spending, policing remains the single largest expenditure for

Delta with 18 per cent of the municipality’s total spending going to police services. Delta spent just over $35 million on policing in 2015. Road and transportation, which includes drainage, equipment, recoverable services and depreciation, was the next highest expenditure at more than $30 million. Property taxes accounted for 55 per cent of the municipality’s revenue, with user fees, including utility fees, accounting for most of the rest at 28 per cent. The municipality also saw an increase in its reserve funds last year, with the combined funds reaching close to $100 million. Delta has a number of reserve funds, including ones for Boundary Bay Airport, roads, drainage, sewer, capital projects and an emergency fund.

Water restrictions in place

Watering restrictions went into place in Metro Vancouver over the weekend, two weeks earlier than usual. “We learned many lessons from the drought last year, and we’ve been reviewing our Water Shortage Response Plan with input from residents and businesses to achieve our conservation objectives while mitigating impacts,” said Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore. “As a result, the lawn sprinkling regulations are commencing two weeks earlier this year and run-

ning two weeks longer because they have a profound positive impact in reducing consumption during the peak demand summer season.” Restrictions went into place on Sunday and will run until Oct. 15. With last year’s hot, dry conditions, the region saw Stage 3 water restrictions for the first time in more than a decade. The situation isn’t expected to go that far this year. “We are in a better position this year with respect to our water supply,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of

Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee. “If everyone respects the sprinkling restrictions, and many chose to simply let their lawns go dormant knowing they will greenup in the fall, we hope to meet our conservation targets without escalating restrictions.” Under Stage 1 regulations, residential lawn sprinkling is permitted between 4 and 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays for evennumbered addresses and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for odd-numbered addresses.

B.C. Veggie Day offers a look inside greenhouse

A local greenhouse is opening its doors this weekend to give the public a chance to see how its sophisticated operation works as part of the third annual B.C. Veggie Day. West Coast Vegetables Ltd. in Ladner is using B.C. Veggie Day this Saturday to educate consumers on what’s grown in B.C.’s 42 greenhouses. “When you step inside a greenhouse, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a perfect tropical oasis managed by science and technology,” according to the B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association, which is organizing B.C. Veggie Day. Agriculture and AgriFood Canada notes B.C. is the second largest greenhouse vegetable producing province in the country. Peppers are the primary product grown in B.C. greenhouses, while tomatoes come in second, followed by cucumbers. All greenhouse vegetable production in B.C. is destined for the fresh wholesale market. International markets

uild it and they will not only come, they’ll even line up for it. If you weren’t convinced that single family-centric South Delta lacks housing options, namely townhouses, the scene that played out in Marina Gardens last week surely must have changed your mind. After Polygon Homes opened a show home to launch its Charterhouse development, buyers were so eager to get their hands on the units they started to camp out, a line that grew to some 35 people last Monday, three days before they could begin signing on the dotted line. There are all kinds of reasons why there would be such interest in the development, including a riverfront location that’s hard to beat. Adjacent to earlier phases of Marina Gardens, arguably Ladner’s most desirable neighbourhood, as well as a marina, golf course and the Millennium Trail, the units tick the boxes when it comes to the three most important factors in real estate — location, location, location. Throw in the fact they start in the mid-$600,000 range, they’re being constructed by a reputable builder and that your housing dollar goes further in South Delta than it does in Richmond or Vancouver, and it all adds up to heightened interest. However, there’s another factor, one that likely trumps all others, that explains why a considerable number of people would be willing to line up for days for the privilege of paying the full asking price. A quick scan of South Delta townhouse listings on the web earlier this week found nine in Ladner and a whopping four in Tsawwassen, which means if you’re looking for a townhouse, either due to lifestyle choice or financial consideration, you have precious few options. Getting municipal approval for the final phase of Marina Gardens was a contentious process as a portion of the development’s existing homeowners weren’t keen on the idea of adding higher density, particularly if it came with a price tag that wasn’t in keeping with the neighbourhood. I suspect some of those feelings still exist today, but given the demand that’s been exhibited for the first wave of these units (there will be 674 in total in the final phase) it’s easy to see why they’re being constructed.

Current set up not conducive to attracting needed GPs

I

remember my childhood doctor regularly making house calls, a bit like the lovable English veterinarian, Dr. James Harriott, did for his four-legged friends. Rarely were we referred to clinics, specialists or emergency wards. We should be so lucky today. We need to find new ways to truly care for people’s medical issues. For instance, maybe house calls could be done for those who are so immobilized it is inappropriate to expect them to come to the doctor, rather than the reverse. We also need many more gerontologists. I happen to be one of around 7,500 people in South Delta who have lost or are about to lose their family doctor. South Delta has six established family physicians who have retired or will retire by the end of July. When you consider family doctors have between 800 and 1,500 patients, that averages out to 7,500 folks looking for a family practitioner. The bad news is there are no doctors in South Delta taking new patients and the new docs coming in are going to be “locums,” which I will explain later. There are some taking patients in North Delta and Richmond. You can do a search on the College of Physicians and Surgeons website (www.cpsbc.ca) or you can go to www.fetchbc.ca/delta to get on a waitlist for a South Delta doctor. way of the dodo bird along with many of their options, such as hospital privileges, the number of patients they see, how many issues they can address per visit, etc. A family physician is now considered a specialty in medical school and requires an extra two years of education beyond the eight years they’ve already done. Depending on the specialty, many require an additional two to five years. “Locums” are doctors who can do anything family physicians can do, except be that person you would see on a regular basis. This is bad news for doctor/patient relationships as there won’t be one. Whatever happened to the movement toward more patientcentered care? There’s a very good article on the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives website (http://www. policynote.ca/how-doctors-arepaid-in-bc/) by Dr. Vanessa Brcic

titled How Doctors are Paid in B.C. Reading this will give you quite an insight into what’s wrong and how to fix it. I quote: “In B.C., doctors… are paid by an antiquated compensation model called Fee for Service (FFS), which basically reduces medical visits to a series of billable scenarios.” In defense of locums, a major consideration is the huge debt loads graduating doctors are carrying and their need to pay down those debts by making lots of money quickly. Locums billing FFS can bill an average of $1,100 per day compared to $800 per day in sessional fees. Out of that they still have to pay 35 to 40 per cent in overhead plus fees and insurance. After seeing 35 to 40 patients, they spend another four to six hours doing paperwork. One doctor said this leaves him feeling frantic knowing this is not the best way to serve those patients’ needs. He said, “You don’t need to pay us more, but by paying us flexibly and allowing room for innovation, you may see more family doctors ready to open a practice in B.C.” Are you listening, Ministry of Health? Beach goer pleased to see gates will stay open later

Editor: Re: Park doesn’t need to be open so late, letter to the editor, April 29 While I can appreciate the complaint about a lack of community consultation, I’d like to express my opinion on Metro Vancouver extending the hours of Centennial Beach. Peter Malim stated that by having the park open until 10 p.m. from May 31 to Sept. 5, it would be open “for nearly two hours after dark” by September. However, during most of those spring and summer months the sun will not set until after 9 p.m. and twilight will stretch beyond 10 p.m. It hardly seems valid to advocate for keeping the closing time of 8 p.m.

due to lack of light. Perhaps we need not be too worried about the “cover of darkness” welcoming people from outside the local area, and inviting crime/vandalism after all. Furthermore, I hope we as South Deltans can stop associating people from out of town with crime. Yes, the extended hours may attract teenagers and young adults to the beach, but I can think of worse places for them to be. And no, young families (like mine) probably won’t stay until the new closing time. However, we may occasionally push bedtime past 8 p.m. if it means exposing our children to the stunning beauty of the bay during and after sunset.

My family moved to South Delta three years ago and Centennial Beach has become one of our local favourite places. On those rare occasions when my wife and I can secure a babysitter, our favourite thing to do is order takeout from Uptown Eatery and Bar (the sister restaurant to the Centennial Beach Café and also our favourite place to eat in South Delta) and take it to Centennial Beach where we make a fire and enjoy the sky’s magical display. On several occasions we’ve been kindly asked to leave by a parks worker as he prepares to close the gate at 8 p.m. This year we look forward to staying a little later. Lee Kosa

Mall’s best perk will be vast free parking

Editor: Re: Major tenants announced for Tsawwassen Mills mall, May 11 I read with much amusement and a bit of empathy the article on the tenant announcement at Tsawwassen Mills. The statement that customers will be willing to drive up to two and a half hours to have this experience is ridiculous. The promoters of this venture believe that patrons will make the journey through tunnel and

over bridges, some tolled, sit patiently in the extreme traffic conditions, endure border waits and face the same or worse going home for comparable retail choices that are available closer to home. Granted, the retail variety may not be available in a “one-stop shopping” environment, but I doubt the end will justify the journey. There will, of course, be the opening days and weeks of initial interest, which will have drivers competing for parking

spaces. It won’t be long, six months or less, when one will arrive to what appears a very full parking lot only to discover only a trickle of shoppers roaming the vast mall corridors. Where are all the vehicle owners? Well, they’re on board a ferry, heading to a variety of destinations for the day or a weekend or heading out on vacation from YVR and enjoying the best “perk” this new venture has to offer — free parking. Stranger picks up tab for Mother’s Day lunch

Editor: This is a thank you to a kind and generous Good Samaritan, and a senior to boot, I believe, in Ladner. On the Wednesday afternoon before Mother’s Day, two grandmothers and I went for a late lunch at The Landing. All the

tables were taken, but a kind gentleman, alone, offered up his table. He took a stool at the counter. We thanked him and enjoyed our lunch. The gentleman left before us and when we asked for our tab, we learned that he had paid

that as well. We could not believe his generosity but we were too late to thank him. So, thanks to that kind gentleman. The ladies really enjoyed their Mother’s Day lunch. Ed Patton

of Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonald’s and we really applaud owner Steve Krawchuk for his tremendous commitment to children with special needs through this event for the past 10 years,” said Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila. The annual event is a community affair and Delta police Chief Neil Dubord did his part by handcuffing Krawchuk to help solicit donations. Police officers and firefighters attended in force to help for hours at a time. McHappy Day Hero socks were a terrific fundraising vehicle and Corporation of Delta showed its support by buying many pairs from councillors Sylvia Bishop and Ian Paton who worked the drive-thru. Coast Tsawwassen Inn also got in on the act and purchased 50 pairs of socks to support the cause. Local entertainers who volunteered their time to perform at McHappy Day included Deas Island Dance, Delta Secondary choir, Peg Keenleyside,

Pot shop to face $3,000 business licence JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

With the federal government committing to legalizing marijuana, Delta is making changes to its business licence bylaw. Retail sales of the drug are not currently permitted under federal law, however changes to medical and recreational marijuana are anticipated so municipal staff recommended making amend-

ments to Delta’s licensing regulations. Delta council gave the bylaw amendment approval this week. Under the proposed changes, a marijuana dispensary would be subject to an annual $3,000 business licence fee, which is the same basic fee for a dating and/or escort service. The bylaw also sets out an increase in fines for operating without a busi-

ness licence and unauthorized use of a property. Earlier this year, Mayor Lois Jackson spoke out about her concerns after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the government’s regulations restricting the rights of medical marijuana patients to grow their own cannabis were an infringement on charter rights and gave the government six months to come up with new rules. In April, the Liberal gov-

ernment announced plans to table legislation to legalize marijuana in spring 2017. “We have to be careful what we create,” Jackson said earlier this year. “I’m not a scientist, I’m not a doctor. We have to wait for legislation first and we’ll have to proceed from there. I really hope it’s going to be something of a positive nature rather than creating something we will be taking exception to.”

Shed set for makeover

I can picture every inch of my She Shed. It has freshly cut flowers and a twinkling chandelier. It has an overstuffed armchair and white French doors and pastel curtains that flutter in the breeze. There are vintage teapots and crystal glasses and pillows to recline on when naptime calls. It’s the anti-Man Cave. Men? Hey, they can have their jukeboxes and their pool tables and their 200-inch televisions and their mini beer fridges. I’ll take a plush white sectional and a wicker rocker and some geraniums grown in a watering can. Men can have their leather recliners and their dartboards and their poker sets and their boom boxes. I’ll take my silk robe and my scented candles and my sweet little built-in speakers that serenade me all day with Mozart. Problem is, I don’t have built-in speakers. Or vintage teapots. Or a twinkling chandelier. I don’t have a plush white sectional, or even a plush green or plush yellow sectional. I have geraniums, but they’re in a basket hanging

out front. I have pillows, but they’re on the bed, directly beneath the headboard. I have a shed, but it’s stuffed with all manner of things, none of which speaks to me. The lawn mower. The winter tires. The power washer. The pruning shears. The tool kit, the shovel, the drill. Not terribly romantic, if you ask me. “We need to empty the shed,” I told the husband. “I know,” he said. “It needs a good re-org.” “No,” I said. “I don’t think you get my drift. We need to empty the shed.” He looked at me, decidedly confused. “Maybe I’m missing something here,” he said,

“but where would we keep, oh, the lawn mower?” I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know,” I said. “We’ll figure that out. But the point is, we need to make space for my armchair and chandelier.” The husband looked really, really, really confused. The husband, let’s just say, had not yet heard about my longing for a She Shed. I had suspected, right from the get go, that the husband was going to be less than enthusiastic when I suggested we turn the garden shed into an ultra feminine getaway for yours truly. I was absolutely right. “So,” he said, scratching his head. “You want to put a chandelier in the shed? And a chair?” “And a sectional,” I said. “And candles. And lots and lots of pillows.” The husband nodded, but clearly didn’t understand. Turning my vision into reality, it occurred to me, would take a bit of work, so I’m going to start small. Tomorrow, I take the drill from the shed, and put in a teapot instead.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION: Does better credit score really mean I qualify for more mortgage?

Q: What is the difference between making a ‘designated gift’ or an ‘undesignated gift’ to Delta Hospital?

A: Making a gift to Delta Hospital is a wonderful way of recognising the amazing care that yourself or a loved one has received at our Hospital. It is a heartfelt way for patients and their families to say “thank you” to our medical staff, or honour a special person or occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, or wedding.

ANSWER:

Lisa Manwaring AMP

YES! Recent government changes have tipped their hand toward those with good credit. When it comes to buyers with less than 20% down the government will allow those with higher credit scores able to afford more. Remember that your credit score is not only impacted by how timely you make your payments but also how close you are to your credit card limits and how often creditors make enquiries on your credit file. QUESTION:

When making a gift to the Delta Hospital Foundation, you can choose to give in support of a specific fund or department, or you can donate to the Hospital’s Greatest Needs fund. This is an undesignated fund, meaning donations can be utilized across the hospital based on priority needs. These funds may be used to purchase urgently needed hospital equipment, support building renovations or contribute to a capital campaign.

What services make your company unique in home support?

Dr. Jerome Griffiths B.Sc., D.D.S.

Last month I talked about how a cavity was similar to rust in a car. The longer the cavity is left, the bigger it gets. How does a cavity become a cavity in the first place? When bacteria is left undisturbed the bacteria grows and grows, as it would in a petri dish. The bacteria in the mouth consume the sugars from the foods we eat and the by-products that they produce is acidic. This acid demineralizes the enamel and gives the bacteria a chance to grow in the holes that are created due to that demineralization. Everyone is different, and so is the bacteria that we have in our mouth. There are many different strands of bacteria, some are more aggressive than others and need intervention to restore the health of the mouth. Brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste helps to strengthen enamel which makes it harder for the bacteria to demineralize the surface. Flossing helps to disturb the bacterial colonies in the areas that the toothbrush cannot reach like between the teeth and under the gum. A fluoride mouthrinse can be helpful for some people as well. Every mouth has bacteria, but the more that they are disrupted, the better chance you have in avoiding those cavities. And with regular checkups and cleanings it is easier to catch those cavities in their early stages.

QUESTION I’m concerned that wearing hearing aids will make me stand out. Is there a way to avoid this?

A: Thanks for the great question. #GETLOUD is our commitment

here at the Medicine Shoppe to support the Canadian Mental Health Association’s May awareness campaign. GET LOUD means speaking up to stop discrimination and stigma that often goes hand-in-hand with mental illness. It means using our and your voice to raise awareness and build support for your yourself, family members, friends, neighbours or anyone with a mental illness. In Canada, one in four seniors suffer from a mental illness and, as our population ages, this number is expected to increase dramatically. This means in OUR community, a minimum of 25% of our seniors are suffering from depression, anxiety, dementia or substance abuse/addiction. The stigma around mental health issues does prevent some from reaching out for help – our goal is to break the stigma and, working alongside your care team, provide as much support as possible during the treatment & recovery periods. Come speak with us about how we can best support you and your loved ones during this challenging period of their life.

ANSWER It’s normal to be concerned about how your appearance may be affected by the addition of hearing aids. However, compensating for a hearing loss by asking people to repeat themselves, inappropriately responding to people (or not responding at all), or even withdrawing from social situations is more obvious than wearing hearing aids! Rest assured that today’s hearing aids are small, discreet and more stylish than ever before. Some are even invisible. ADVICE FROM THE PROS Q: Has the market shown any signs of slowing down?

Q: How can my discussions with my doctor affect my ICBC claim? A: Two of the most important aspects of your ICBC claim are what your doctor tells you

and what you tell your doctor. When another driver causes you to suffer injuries or other losses, ICBC is required to make things right by compensating you for your injuries and losses. However, you are also required to take reasonable steps to minimize those injuries and losses. For example, if you suffer a back injury, your doctor might refer you for 12 sessions of physiotherapy. If Graham Buchanan you choose not to act on that referral but complain of back pain a year later, there’s a good chance that ICBC will argue that you are largely responsible for that continuing back pain since it probably could have been avoided by undergoing the treatment that your doctor had recommended to you. Ultimately ICBC will not be on the hook for persistent injuries that would have resolved had you followed your doctor’s advice. Paying attention to what you tell your doctor is equally important. While there is some value in simply telling ICBC that you are still experiencing a certain condition or symptom, it is much more valuable to be able to draw ICBC’s attention to the fact that you have repeatedly been making a similar complaint over a period of time. This can only be done if your doctor’s records show that you have continually been making that complaint, and the records will only show the complaint if you have been verbally expressing the complaint to your doctor. To ensure that your records are comprehensive, see your doctor regularly and always be candid about what you are experiencing.

For obvious reasons your realtor will make a good case to simply re-locate (ah, but not so simple!) Conversely, a good Renovator can take that existing house and make it your Dream Home! In my opinion there are 3 main factors to consider: 1. Do we enjoy living in our present location, as it is a lot of work and expense to re-locate. 2. Can we work with this existing house and bring our ideas to life here. 3. How long do we foresee ourselves in this location. All very important considerations indeed! First is going to be personal for each family and I just take into consideration the upheaval involved to re-locate. Second is where consultation with a professional Renovator can help you in the re-configuration or addition to your existing layout. Third and most important with regards to your investment in any renovation is your commitment to location. If you have a short 1-3 year plan in mind then cosmetics and immediate repairs only or you risk losing most of your investment. If you foresee a 5-10 year stay then I feel you are safe in the 50K to 150K investment into your property upgrades as you are now renovating to increase the value in your home plus adding livability and quality to your lifestyle! Beyond that time frame it’s only about wants vs. needs and the total affordability of your Dream Project! MRP Renovations is here to solve all your renovating Want’s and Need’s! Where quality counts

Hi Gene, The first place we would look is the toilet. Is something lodged inside it? A child’s toy, a bottle cap? It will still work in many cases, but not work very well. Removing the toilet, and inspecting the trap will usually confirm if there is an obstruction. The next thing we would look for is a plugged plumbing vent. In order for the drains in your home to work, they need to be able to draw in air. If you look on top of your roof, you will most likely see one or more black or grey pipes in the vicinity of your bathroom or kitchen. These are your plumbing vents. If they become plugged, that hollow thumping noise you hear coming from your bathtub, is air being sucked in through the bathtub overflow. This is a good indicator that you’ve got a plugged plumbing vent. In single family homes, auguring the plumbing vents down from your roof, will usually clear this up. In multi-unit complexes, we follow this up with hi-pressure water flushing.Your toilet will work like a charm, (and without the added sound effects.)

Silver is also increased to yearly highs in both US and Canadian dollars. In December Silver was $14.00 US and $18.50 Canadian . For the end of April Silver has reached $17.91 US and $22.75 Canadian.

We have seen large increases in our business in both the buying and selling of gold and silver. This weekend we were able to pay over $10.00 per ounce more than the largest dealers in Canada and we were selling at $5.00 less than they were. With silver this week we sold a large client silver at 50 cents an ounce less than our biggest competitors. That may not sound like a big difference but it saved him $500.00 dollars. If you are thinking of buying or selling gold or silver bullion you should compare with us and do better. We still but scrap gold jewelry and pay the highest in Richmond by far.

Two teams of Grade 7 boys from Sacred Heart School are heading to Iowa later this month to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. Odyssey of the Mind is an educational program that challenges students to be creative in how they approach problem solving. Teams are given a problem and a guideline but no direction as to how the challenge should be completed. Kim Tjoe, a coach of one of the teams, says the competition is a unique opportunity for students. “Nowhere else in their education do they get the chance to drive the bus. They have to figure out how they’re going to do it.” Students Jordan Nykoluk, Ishmael Cordero, Justin Newfield, Carson Lee, Joshua Cho, Peter Lauinger, Ryan Tjoe, Aaron Coschizza, Michael Lowndes, Ben Christian and Karl Lacasse will be attending the competition, which takes place May 25 to 28 at Iowa State University in Ames. Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures. New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

A: One of the most common signs of sleep apnea is loud and chronic snoring. Others may witness stops in the breathing, gasping, choking, and snorting. People with sleep apnea often feel sleepiness and fatigue during the day. Some people find that they have poor memory and concentration. Some feel irritable, depressed, or have mood swings.

A: Shutters are timeless. Like anything though, they have evolved. Companies have explored ways of making them less expensive, more durable and resistant to the elements. The result was a shutter product made from extruded vinyl/PVC. Manufacturers brand their vinyl shutters with different names like “PolySatin”, “PolySilk”, “PolyResin” to name a few but they’re all basically the same. They do tend to be heavy and they aren’t quite as strong as wood but the advantage is you can get them wet. Wood on the other hand is… well… wood! It’s strong, durable, lightweight and easy to repair. My suggestion is unless these are going outside, and if you’re looking to keep these for a long time, wood is the best way to go.

FRASER HEALTH PUBLIC BOARD MEETING When: Wednesday, June 15, 2016

The very popular Unique Boutique Luncheon and Fashion Show was held at the KinVillage Community Centre earlier this month. Attendees were treated to amazing art work by Echo Marie Fawkes, a hand drawn version of the Eiffel Tower by John Green, handmade cutlery holders by Rachelle Kelly, and table runners and vase covers by Margaret

Ryding, all of which transformed the main hall to suit the theme, Mais Oui Paris. Modeling beautiful items from the Unique Boutique, the volunteers talked about how much they appreciated the wonderful donations of clothing and accessories that were subsequently sold, along with other items, at very reasonable prices. The boutique’s vol-

unteer coordinator, Deb Topley, said she is grateful for all the help in putting on the event, including commentator Jean Kay and escort Kerry Bentley. The Unique Boutique, located inside KinVillage Community Centre, 543010th Ave., Tsawwassen, is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations of gently-used, high-end women’s clothing are always welcome.

McNamaras earn bronze at Worlds Hectic stretch for Tsawwassen twins after outstanding freshman year at UCLA Nicole and Megan McNamara can at last catch their breath after three competitions in as many weeks that took them across the globe. Coming off outstanding freshman seasons at UCLA, the beach volleyball standouts won bronze Monday representing Canada at the FIVB U21 World Championships in Lucerne. The twins from Tsawwassen arrived in Switzerland just three days after competing at the inaugural NCAA Championships in Alabama. The whirlwind stretch began with the Pac 12 Championships 17 days earlier in Los Angeles. The McNamaras even tried to squeeze in some family vacation time with their mom and dad and grandparents also making the trip to Europe. “Our whole family is here. So we might take a break off from the whole volleyball scene and do something touristy. Enjoy Switzerland,” said Megan. “Having our family here helps, it’s a stress reliever to just be able to hug our mom and dad or our grandparents.” The girls likely needed more quality family time after their two matches went the distance to close out the World Championships. First up was a three-set semi-final heartbreaker to the Russian team of Nadezda Makroguzova and

Nicole (2) and Megan McNamara in action at the U21 World Beach Volleyball Championships in Lucerne. Svetlana Kholomina. The McNamaras dropped the first game but then extended the match with a 21-15 win, before falling 15-13 in the deciding set. There was little time to regroup with the bronze medal match taking place just hours later and it happened to be against UCLA teammates Sarah Sponcil and Torrey Van Winden, representing the United States. The McNamaras warded off three American match points in the second set to win it at their first set point

23-21. This proved the turning point in the match as they continued their good play in the tiebreak with a 15-10 triumph. “It’s always hard coming off of a really tough loss in the semi-finals,” Megan said. “So we really had to bounce back and be strong. But we just decided that if we’re going to be disappointed about our loss in the semi-finals it should be tonight and not right before another big medal game. So we just thought about how great it would be to be on the podium.”

The twins had put themselves in medal contention with an impressive 2-0 win over Paraguay’s Erika Mongelos Bobadilla and Michelle Valiente Amarilla in the quarter-finals. It is the second FIVB bronze for the sisters. They also placed third at the 2014 U19 Worlds in Porto. In that same year they had a 17th place finish at the U21. It’s the third medal for Canada in the women’s U21 history. The South Delta Secondary School graduates wasted little time in

establishing themselves as the top team at UCLA. They helped the No. 4 Bruins enjoy at great run at the NCAA Championships before falling to No. 1 Florida State and became just the second and third players in the program’s history to be named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association AllAmerican Team. The national award came after both girls were selected to the Pac-12 AllConference Team. Megan was also named Pac 12 Freshman of the Year.

Ladner’s Erkamps captains Brandon to WHL title

Macoy Erkamps will conclude his junior hockey career on the sport’s biggest stage in Canada. The 21-year-old blueliner from Ladner has captained the Brandon Wheat Kings to their first Western Hockey League championship since 1996 after an 8-4 game five victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night in Kent, WA. The Wheat Kings now move on to the Memorial Cup national major junior championships where they will be up champions from the Ontario and Quebec leagues, along with the host Red Deer Rebels. Erkamps chipped in with a goal in the clinching game to finish the WHL playoffs with 14 points in 21 games. He earlier had a huge regular season with 71 points in 72 games, including 13 goals. That earned him a three-year entry level contract with the Ottawa Senators.

Next stop for Macoy Erkamps is the Memorial Cup in Red Deer. “Getting drafted in the league, you never think something like this is possible,” said Erkamps. “We had a good group last year and that paved the way for this year. There are just so many guys who stepped up and made a huge impact.

“There is no words to explain this feeling right now and I’m so happy to be sharing this with these guys, the coaching staff and the city of Brandon. Erkamps spent much of the season playing alongside Philadelphia Flyers 2015 first round pick Ivan Provorov. His decorated career includes helping U16 Team B.C. win gold for the first time in 32 years at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. The Wheat Kings topped the Eastern Conference with a 46-24-1-1 record and won previous series against Edmonton (4-2), Moose Jaw (4-1) and Red Deer (4-1) to reach the WHL finals. The Memorial Cup starts Thursday and runs until May 29. Brandon participated in the 2010 tournament as hosts and lost 9-1 to Windsor in the championship game.

HUBBARD, Albert William (Bob) March 1, 1925 to April 13, 2016 .

HINDMARSH, Arthur William Born July 6, 1927 in Coronach, Saskatchewan, passed away May 11, 2016 at the Waterford Care Center in Tsawwassen, British Columbia. He left this life, at peace, with his loving wife by his side, with the message of his life still on his lips, “God is good.” A Celebration of his life will be held at South Delta Baptist Church, Tsawwassen, British Columbia on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Art worked as a family physician and staff member at St Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1958 - 2000. He devoted much time and energy to the development and improvement of his community: he served on multiple medical committees, was actively involved as an elder and teacher at his church and was an elected member of the Saskatoon Public School Board for 25 years. Art was a quiet, gentle and patient man. He loved medicine and cherished his family deeply. He was an avid photographer and leaves a legacy of thousands of pictures. His commitment to both medicine and family came in the context of a man who loved God and was passionate about serving Him with his whole heart. After retiring from medicine, Art and Mary moved to White Rock, British Columbia where they enjoyed their retirement years. On April 28th this year they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary together. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his devoted wife Mary, his children: Richard (Judie) Hindmarsh, Carol (Duane) Dobson, Colleen (Larry) Adam, Tim (May) Hindmarsh, ten grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren. Also, his siblings Cecil (Ruth) Hindmarsh, Doug (Doreen) Hindmarsh, Doreen Magnuson and Wes Edwards. The family would like to thank the Waterford Care Center for their excellent nursing care. In lieu of flowers, Art would be honored with a donation to the Gideons International. “God Is Good.” Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

Bob Hubbard passed away peacefully on April 13 at Delta View Habilitation Centre. He was 91. Bob was predeceased by Edith, his wife of 67 years who passed away May 19, 2015, and by sisters Bertha and Emily, brother Tom and brother-in-law Bill. Bob was born and raised in Vancouver and during high school at John Oliver, took an interest in woodworking and mechanics. He was a member of the Air Cadets and in 1942 enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. After basic and airplane mechanic training, Bob was stationed at the RCAF base in Comox where he met Edith. Six months later, in 1943, Bob was sent overseas and served at two airfields in England repairing Lancasters and Spitfires. He returned to Vancouver at the end of WWII, married Edith and settled on acreage in Brookswood, South Langley where they raised their four daughters. . Bob first worked as a power linesman with Hume and Rumble then in residential and commercial construction. When the construction industry crashed in the 60’s Bob managed the Spray Division of Okanagan Helicopters. He later established Transwest Helicopters and Timbertest, working with BC Tel and Hydro. . Despite his busy work life, Bob made time for his family, taking his girls and dog camping, boating, fishing and on driving trips. He also made time to participate in various community groups. He was a volunteer fireman, a Kinsman and later a K-40 member, a Mason, Shriner and a supporter of the Legion. Bob was hardworking and a leader and in true “Bob” fashion, he moved up the ranks in the organizations he belonged to - he was the Brookswood Fire Chief for many years, a Kinsman President in the 50’s and Grand Master in the Masons in 1983. Bob and Edith settled full-time at Pender Harbour in 1990 where you’d find Bob happily puttering in his workshop, on his boat, beachcombing and fishing, or at home, entertaining family and friends, always with his dog close by. . By the fall of 2013 Bob’s health had failed to the point where he could no longer stay in his beloved home. He moved to Delta View Habilitation Centre while Edith settled in Ladner. Bob is at peace now and reunited with Edith. He is sorely missed by daughters Sharon, Gayle, Fern and Joanne; grandchildren Sarah (Darrell), Seth, Stephen (Sarah), Will, Derek, Kevin and Travis (Claire); great grandchildren Hanna, William, Alexander and Gregory; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. His community spirit, strength of character and stories remain with us. . Special thanks to Dr. Ron Davidson and caregivers at Delta View, and to Dr. Bruce Robinson at Madeira Park. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Bob’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, the Legion or a charity of your choice. His Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 11:00am, at the Town and Country Inn in Delta.

EMSLEY, Angela Frances (nee Leach) January 29 1944 - May 13 2016

Angela, born in the UK in 1944 to Dossy and George Leach, passed away at her home in Beach Grove, South Delta, BC on May 13 2016, having being diagnosed with Cancer in January 2016. During her illness she was happy to be visited by family and many of her close friends. She remained cheery and positive throughout. She died peacefully, surrounded by her family, as we said the Lord’s Prayer together at her bedside. Angela, Roger and their infant daughter Kirsty, emigrated to Canada on June 3 1967. They settled in Beach Grove in 1968, and from then on always lived in South Delta. Angela and family soon became members of the Benediction Lutheran Church congregation. Their second daughter, Tara was born in 1969. Angela quickly became active in the community. She started working for George Hodgins Realty as a legal assistant and then became licensed as a Realtor - a career which she continued until retiring in 2000. Her Christian faith was very important to her. At Benediction Lutheran Church she contributed her time and talents and was a member of several committees, serving on Church Council and later being elected as Chairman of the Benediction Council, serving two terms in the 1980s. She also attended and enjoyed mid-week services at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner. Her three main interests were her horses, dogs and gardening. In 1984 the family moved to Grove Farm in Ladner, where they could board their daughters’ horses. One of their horses gave birth at their farm to a foal, Sunschein, and she and daughter Tara enjoyed riding him around Boundary Bay. Angela ran a horse boarding stable and later a bed and breakfast at the farm. In 2007 Angela and Roger sold their farm and moved back to Beach Grove. She loved walking our various dogs, which she did most days. With our current dog Rosie, she joined an avid group of neighbourhood dog walkers, meeting every morning to walk the Boundary Bay dyke. Her other joy was her garden, which is a colourful picture and occupied much of her time in spring and summer.
