Bridge won’t be delayed: Stone Transportation minister tells Delta that despite opposition, province is committed to timeline SANDOR GYARMATI

B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone says it’s full steam ahead on the bridge.

It’s full steam ahead for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project despite mounting opposition from outside Delta. In a recent letter to Mayor Lois Jackson, B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone alleviated any concerns the bridge could

be delayed, saying he appreciates the mayor’s support on behalf of residents in the community, many of whom must deal with the negative impacts of congestion at the tunnel on a daily basis. After Delta council had contacted the minister urging the government to stick with the original timeline, Stone responded by assuring civic politicians

here the province remains committed to the timeline. “We are also committed to continuing to work collaboratively with Metro Vancouver and other stakeholders to ensure that this project will meet the needs of Metro Vancouver residents for generations,” wrote Stone. Noting his ministry has consulted extensively with regional district staff throughout the

planning process, Stone said the project team has had more than 25 meetings with Metro Vancouver to cover such topics as traffic, population and employment projections, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, health analysis, agriculture, Deas Island Regional Park and utilities. Not a scam: statue owner Ron Shore tells media he’s not interested in insurance money from robbery JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The owner of a multimillion-dollar golden eagle statue maintains a robbery in Ladner last month was not part of an insurance scam. “I’m really not interested in the insurance money because it doesn’t cover what I put into it,” Ron Shore told a press conference in North Delta last week. “I am not responsible for this theft and I only seek to get the eagle back.” Shore also announced last week a $10,000 reward for information leading to the return of the statue and confirmed it is currently valued at more than $7 million CAD. He added the reward is only $10,000 because he put all his money, including mortgaging his home, into making the statue. The statue is a custom hand-made, free-standing eagle measuring 26 centimetres by 10 centimetres and made from white and yellow gold, more than 50 carats in diamonds and a large emerald. He created the statue as part of his campaign, The Ultimate Treasure Hunt, to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer after the death of his sister-in-law to the disease. His goal is to sell the statue and use the funds to start a series of fundraising concerts in Vancouver, Toronto, L.A. and New York. Delta police confirmed last week the statue is insured but would not

The statue was stolen at around 10 p.m. on May 29 following an event at the Delta Manor Education Centre in the 4700-block of 57th Street. Shore said he was walking to his car when he was approached by a suspect dressed all in black with only his eyes showing. He said the suspect hit him over the head and said, “Give me the bag.” Shore said the suspect

grabbed the bag and a second bag holding a silvercoloured replica of the statue. He said he chased after the suspect, grabbing onto the get-away car and was dragged several metres before falling to the ground. Shore said he suffered multiple injuries, including a gash to the top of his head that required stitches, and a concussion. Police confirmed last week they are looking for two suspects and two

vehicles — a black or dark blue large SUV, similar to a GMC Yukon, and a smaller red or burgundy SUV, similar to a Hyundai Santa Fe. Descriptions of the suspects have not yet been released. Det. Brad Cooper said that while Shore was accompanied by a security person at the time, that person was “just not in an area that was effective at that moment.” Shore had the statue on

display at Art Vancouver over the weekend before the robbery and said he believes he was followed from the exhibit to Ladner. Cooper said last week investigators are still reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 604-946-4411 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or solvecrime.ca.

Stone says public feedback shows crossing a priority CONTINUED from Page 1 He also noted public feedback throughout the process has “made it clear that improvements at this crossing are a priority.” The province maintains it does not require a federal environmental review, although opponents, including the Vancouver and Surrey dominated Metro Vancouver board, have been calling for one. In a recent interview, Jackson expressed frustration at Metro Vancouver, suggesting politics were coming into play and that other mayors want to

The 10-lane bridge is scheduled to open in 2022. delay the project in order for federal infrastructure money to head toward their wish list of projects instead. The latest opposition

to the $3.5-billion bridge comes from an e-petition to Parliament by a Richmond resident, which calls for a federal environmental review. The peti-

tion by Paul Magnus, and sponsored by NDP MP Fin Donnelly, suggests the bridge would cause environmental damage and ruin farmland. The Corporation of Delta, the Tsawwassen First Nation and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority strongly support the project. Construction of the

10-lane, 3.3-kilometre bridge is to begin next year. It is scheduled to open in 2022. The project includes 24 kilometres of improvements on Highway 99, a lane for transit/HOV, three replacement interchanges and five overpasses. The bridge will also be able to accommodate rapid transit in the future, but that’s likely going to once again have to be a provinciallyfunded initiative as it would not likely be on TransLink’s or the regional mayors’ transit improvement radar.

He was the type of man you’d be proud to have for a granddad. That’s how Dale Saip, the Vancouver Giants vice-president of business development and member of the Delta school board, summed up Gordie Howe, the hockey legend and fine gentleman who passed away at 88 last week. Howe had a Delta connection as a co-owner of the Western Hockey League Giants, whose training facility is located at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Howe, who paid several visits to Ladner, including during the expansion of the leisure centre, was known as Mr. Hockey, but Saip is quick to point out the hall of famer was much more. “In your life you get to meet people that are known as heroes, but when you meet them you’re disappointed because they’re just not

what you thought they would be. Gordie was completely opposite. He was all you would ever want to be and more,” said Saip. “He was what you wanted your dad, your uncle, your granddad or whatever to be. He was kind, gracious to people, had time for everybody. As much as he was a fierce competitor in the hockey rink, he was a wonderful human being.” Noting he had known him for many years, Saip said the way Howe treated people made him a quality human being. “He was a generous man and respectful and humble. He was a good farm boy from Saskatchewan who played the game he loved well and always considered himself to be very fortunate and blessed to be able to do something like that for a living,” he said. Saip recalled a story Howe told him about how he’d gone back to

Saskatchewan to see his father, who worked for the City of Saskatoon, and found himself having to haul concrete with a work crew. “He said he didn’t want to do that but it helped with his shoulders. Man, he had a good set of shoulders on him,” laughed Saip. Local businessman Ron Toigo, the Giants’ majority owner, said Howe stayed in South Delta every time he came to the Lower Mainland, his last visit being in 2013. He also described him as “a wonderful human being and a kid at heart.” On the team’s website, Toigo said it was a sad day when hearing the news. “He had an impact on everyone in our organization. It’s been a difficult period for us, losing both Pat and now Gordie in such a short period of time,” he said. Another Giants partowner, Pat Quinn, passed away late in 2014.

Plan would see Point quarry provide fill for Southlands Residents concerned by application for 75 truckloads daily SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A plan to start a Point Roberts mining operation to supply material for the Century Group’s Southlands development has residents on both sides of the border concerned. Whatcom County has received an application from Jason and Lori McDougal to mine their 50-acre property in the 1600-block of Roosevelt Way for a one-time, lowintensity operation within an area less than three acres in the centre of the property. The plan is to mine the site over the course of 90 to 120 days for gravel and sand, material that would be taken by dump truck, at about 75 trips daily, from the American peninsula to the nearby Southlands in Tsawwassen, where the Century Group is preparing to build 950 housing units. The application states that it’s expected between 50,000 and 100,000 cubic yards of gravel will be removed, after which a final grading/reclamation plan will be prepared for county review. A county report, which notes the activity to begin later this summer will take place at least 500 feet from the nearest residence,

An application to Whatcom County would see the one-time reactivation of a quarry on a 50-acre property near the border in Point Roberts. states the applicant has assured the project will not be detrimental to the economic welfare of the community, while traffic patterns have been designed to limit impacts on public roads. However, locals in the Point aren’t so sure, raising a plethora of questions and concerns on a community e-mail feed that also includes residents on the Canadian side of the border. One Point resident noted it’s another example on a non-resident attempting to do a business venture with no benefit to the community. Among several concerns listed by Tsawwassen’s Jim Ronback were the eco-

nomic impact of increased truck traffic causing longer lineups at the border. The applicant has also received some support, including a Point resident who noted the couple has close and long-standing ties to the peninsula and used to live in the house on the property, which used to include an active quarry. Comment period closed this week but a hearing is to be scheduled by the county. Century Group president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist via e-mail that his company was approached about its potential needs and it’s likely it won’t require much from the Point

Roberts property, that’s been historically used for gravel extraction. “The fill we need is to raise the level of the ground by up to two metres for flood proofing, which all new housing must do in Boundary Bay,” he explained. “This is different than fill for pre-loading which is when there are poor, compressible soils, particularly for larger buildings.” It’s expected final civic approval for the Southlands development will occur by the end of this month. Hodgins recently noted it will be at least a couple of years before construction begins on the first phase of housing.

n our gridlocked part of the world, there’s not a lot that’s more precious, at least for a beleaguered commuter, than a strip of asphalt that crosses water. Highways and arterial roads are nice but they can only take you so far before the inevitable requirement to traverse a river, bay or inlet, those topographical elements that help give the region its charm but wreak havoc on the daily commute. Given the scarcity and value of these water crossings, it makes sense to utilize them to the absolute maximum, a situation lacking at the Alex Fraser, the six-lane span that has evolved into the second busiest bridge in Greater Vancouver and where significant rush hour back-ups have become the norm. In an overdue move, the province announced last week it will explore the idea of implementing a counterflow system at the bridge, which should bring some initial relief, although history has shown that as soon as additional capacity is provided, it’s quickly swallowed up by drivers seeking the path of least resistance. The fact Victoria is looking at reconfiguring traffic flow on the Alex Fraser demonstrates the value of even a single lane across water, which leaves me scratching my head with the decision to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge. I’m not opposed to a new bridge, but I do question the plan to mothball the tunnel because doing so offsets commuting gains that will be come as a result of the estimated $3.5-billion crossing. I know, I know, there are costly seismic issues in the tube’s future, to say nothing of the shipping industry’s desire to see it removed, but when lanes crossing the river are at such a premium, it seems foolish to forsake ones we already have. The tunnel is at least 20 years younger than the Pattullo, Lions Gate and Burrard bridges, and slightly newer than the Granville Street and Oak Street bridges, so it’s hard to buy the notion it’s nearing the end of its lifespan. It’s outdated, for sure, but with a new bridge built slightly upriver to link both Highway 99 and the South Fraser Perimeter Road with Knight Street, a retrofitted tunnel could still play a role well into the future. It’s a shame its days are numbered because there’s absolutely no doubt water-crossing lanes are precious.

New assisted dying law gives choice, but courage needed

I

magine if we knew the day and time we were going to die. What would we do with that information? Would it give us relief or subject us to extreme anxiety? Most of us will never know until it happens, but if we have an incurable disease or disability, with the help of a physician or nurse practitioner, we can now plan our own death. This is a monumental step towards a freer society where choice reigns. My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 48 and during his two years of treatment he endured painful surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. After a false remission diagnosis, the cancer reappeared in the lining of his stomach and we knew it was time to consider his options for end of life. Sitting propped up in his bed with the bad news still settling in, he met with his oncologist and the palliative care team at VGH. They gave him the choice to deny treatment and die quickly or to receive palliative chemotherapy and begin TPN therapy. With the cancer completely blocking his intestine, the only way to receive calories was though a pic line into his veins.

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

With two teenagers and a loving family, every day counted, he did not want to die. He requested his oncologist give him the best protocol to extend his life no matter what the cost. He lived seven more months. Despite everything his palliative care team could do, he suffered. Regardless of all the pain and grief, it was a gift to know that we had time to plan, to sell and buy a new home, to help curate an exhibition of his art work and to say good-bye to those he loved. What I most admired was his courage, the courage to accept his illness and make choices that benefitted others before himself. If Bill C-14 was in effect nine years ago, my husband could

have asked for medication to end his life a month, weeks or days before the end came. It wasn’t on the table, we never discussed it. His team of amazing palliative care nurses promised to make him comfortable and he was satisfied to let nature take its course. I will never know if he would have decided otherwise. It is hard to imagine others dictating to the dying what they can and can’t do around their final days. It takes unfathomable courage to design and implement your own death. Dignity around those choices is the least we can offer as a society. Medical assisted death is complicated, emotional and personal, and must be a choice, but it doesn’t mean I am not wary of a law that could open doors for the exploitation of the vulnerable. Perhaps that is the price we have to pay for the greater rights of the whole. My husband died with dignity on his own terms in his own home with his family by his side. That is a right that must be allowed to everyone. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer and broadcaster who has learned not to sweat the small stuff.

Letters

Mall highrise not welcome

Editor: Re: Tsawwassen is going the way of Richmond, letter to the editor, June 10 Further to the letter written by Patricia and Patrick Gannon, I have been conducting an informal poll (with friends and people on the street and in stores), asking how they feel about the possibility of a 10- or 12-storey highrise in the middle of Tsawwassen. The response, without exception, is a resounding no way! I could not find a single person who felt that a highrise was needed, wanted or acceptable in the middle of Tsawwassen.

Like the Gannons, most people feel such a highrise would be just the first step to multiple highrises and big city crime. All respondents were seriously concerned about the effects on traffic. We already have traffic jams at rush hour, with only one main street and one main intersection in Tsawwassen. The additional traffic created by highrise residents in the middle of the town would be truly frightening. Most respondents wanted to know just who would benefit by a highrise — other than the developer. Let’s be real here — the

two new shopping malls will effectively decimate the small retail shops in Tsawwassen, so the argument that business would benefit quickly evaporates with the mall openings. I hereby challenge Delta council to ask the homeowners and residents of Tsawwassen what we think of this proposal. Have an open referendum. Let the homeowners and residents have their say. Let’s stand up and speak up and let Delta council know, as loudly and clearly as possible, that we do not want to become South Richmond. Linda Lanoway

Fish deserve precautionary principle

Editor: Re: Giants can be found in the Fraser River, By the Bay, June 8 Anne Murray’s column provides a good example of our cognitive dissonance when it comes to other animals. While many deny that fish feel pain, the scientific evidence is growing that they do. Rather than employing the precautionary principle, we continue to potentially inflict massive pain

(imagine, for instance, what it would be like to be caught in a gill net?) upon up to 2,700 billion fish per year worldwide. Once we’ve fished them nearly to extinction, we congratulate ourselves for conservation efforts while continuing to inflict pain and stress with catch and release fisheries. Common sense dictates that fighting a giant fish like the 750-pound sturgeon cited in the article to exhaus-

tion must cause significant damage, or at the very least, pain and suffering. As Robert Jones of the department of philosophy at California State University, Chico states, “Surely, by any moral calculus, applying the precautionary principle regarding fish welfare is reasonable and prudential, if not obligatory.” And that applies to catch and release, too. How will you welcome summer? Earthwise Society has prepared a light menu of ideas and inspiration for a healthy green summer to commemorate the third annual Gardens Day. Gardens Day is a coastto-coast celebration to draw attention to the importance of gardens in our community, and organizers encourage everyone to visit a garden, public or private. Earthwise will celebrate with the public this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re focusing on the health, well being and aesthetic benefits of gardens,” says Earthwise executive director Patricia Fleming. “And given that it’s the weekend before summer solstice, we invite visitors to meet up in our beautiful earth-friendly garden and get a taste of summer pleasures to come by relaxing in nature, and enjoying freshly harvested food with others.” Chef Derek Bothwell from Winston Chill Restaurant will orchestrate the outdoor dining experience and introduce Earthwise farm-fresh flavours, like carrot top pesto, on flatbread combinations. Complementing him will be local cookbook author Jini Aroon sharing her green inspirations for healthy and delicious smoothies.

National Gardens Day draws attention to the importance of gardens in communities. The Earthwise Farm Store will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. offering fresh organic vegetables and carefully selected local artisan products. Stroll through the beautiful garden for inspiration, then shop for organically grown plants for your home gardens. To salute the extra light and sun, Tsawwassen Spring Fitness will lead visitors in a ceremonial sun salutation yoga pose at noon. As a new community partner, the fitness club will be on site to provide nutritional and fitness expertise, and then continue to offer ongoing support for Earthwise’s education and social programs. Outdoor theatre is another summer pleasure and Robin Hood will be

in the green garden surrounds for a teaser performance. He’ll return with his cast of merry men, and other actors from the Acne Prone Production youth troupe, for full performances on July 23, 24 and 25. South Delta Artists Guild members will also be on site enjoying their regular Saturday plein air painting session in the Earthwise Garden. Bring your camera, or bring your art supplies, and be the inspiration for others to enjoy all that gardens provide. Earthwise Garden is located at 6400-3rd Ave. in Boundary Bay and is open seven days a week. For more information, visit www.earthwisesociety.bc.ca/events and http:// www.gardendays.ca.

Tsawwassen Farmers Market opens third season on Friday

The Tsawwassen Farmers Market opens its third year this Friday and big changes are afoot. The market will move to the RE/Max Progroup Realty courtyard parking lot and run on Fridays, from 3 to 7 p.m., until Oct. 14. The market will host an average of 30 booths, virtually tripling the number of vendors that attended in previous years. In addition to fresh, local produce, gourmet chef products and traditional farm market fare, there will be live music,

food trucks on rotation and a children’s activity booth. “We are grateful to so many for facilitating this transition,” says market manager Anne Janzen, “to the Tsawwassen BIA for their advice and support, to RE/Max Progroup Realty for so generously offering to host the market and to the medical centre across the street for providing their convenient parking lot to our customers.” The market is located at 5360-12th Ave. “We very much look for-

ward to building a market that not only meets the needs of health conscience and discerning shoppers, but will prove to be a community destination where folks can catch up with old friends and kick off the weekend,” says Janzen. The Tsawwassen Farmers Market is produced by Farm Fresh Events, which also operates markets in North Delta and Richmond. For more information about the market, call Janzen at 778-688-3663 or visit http://northdeltafarmersmarket.com.

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

Most things, I remember. My nieces’ birthdays. My boss’s phone number. My password for the ATM. But where one work colleague is concerned — a lovely, middle-aged man with curly auburn hair — I draw a blank. I can never remember his name. This is weird. I know everyone else’s names. Never need to pause for a second before greeting any one of them. But this fellow is another story. And we chat almost every day. This is a problem. “Barbara!” he’ll say when we bump into each other in the elevator or beside the water cooler or in the lunchroom. “Hello!” I will reply, trying desperately to recall whether his name is Dave

or Dan or Doug or Darwin. Pretty sure it starts with a D. Heaven knows I’ve tried to remember. Many days, when I hear someone mention his name, I will write it down, or close my eyes and concentrate, determined to lodge it in the memory bank. The deposit never works. “Barbara!” he said, just a few days ago. We’d met up by the photocopier. “Hi!” I said. “How’s it going? How was your weekend?” By now, I am sure that Dave/Dan/Doug/Darwin is on to me, and knows I haven’t a clue who he is. The husband understands. He has a similar issue. With the husband — who never forgets my birthday or our anniversary or my telephone number at work — it’s his workplace’s newest hire. “Man!” he says. “There’s something wrong with me! I was chatting with this new recruit today and I couldn’t remember her name! She must think I’m nuts!” He, too, has tried to play the memory game. “I’m going to come up with a jingle so I’ll never

forget her name,” he said. “What do you mean?” I asked. “A poem,” he said. “I’m going to create a poem. You know: Roses are red, violets are blue, the new hire is nice, and we all call her Sue.” “Is her name Sue?” I asked. “I can’t remember,” he said. “I think it’s Sue, but it could be Sally. Or Sarah. Or Shelley. Or maybe Dorothy.”

FULL COVERAGE

I nodded, feeling his pain. “A poem could be tricky if her name’s Dorothy,” I observed. Frankly, though, the whole thing is tricky — and more than a little embarrassing. The only solution, as I see it, is to inform my colleague I’ve decided to give him a nickname. He may think that odd, but it’s all I can do. Hope he won’t mind being called Red.

Another big crowd descended on Ladner Harbour Park Sunday afternoon for the Tsawwassen Shrine Club’s 47th annual salmon barbecue. Wayne Lachuer (top left) cleans and filets a salmon before it goes on the grill and eventually makes its way onto a plate. The service club’s major fundraiser of the year, proceeds from the barbecue support the Shriners in their community endeavours. ADVICE FROM THE PROS Lucky Uppal Lawyer

Q: There’s no Will! Who gets the Estate?

QUESTION:

A: If you die without a will in BC you lose control over who gets your estate, who administers it, and who gets custody of your children. While it is not true that “the government gets it all”you may also bring the Office of The Guardian and Public Trustee into your affairs. This can mean increased costs and undesirable results.

ANSWER:

Division of an “intestate” estate – no will – is governed by the Wills, Estates and Succession Act of BC. If there is a spouse and shared children the spouse gets the first $300,000 and the balance is divided equally amongst all of the children. Imagine that suddenly a portion of the money you and your recently deceased partner have saved goes to the Public Trustee to be held until your kids reach 19 and then paid to them. Or if you don’t have close family your estate could end up going to distant relations you don’t know or like, instead of local friends and charities. Another problem where there is no will is that the person who is going to administer your estate is powerless until they get a court order confirming their appointment. It is hard for them to sell property or deal with the banks or pay bills, all of which increases costs. And if you don’t appoint a guardian of your minor children in your will, the courts will decide who should look after them. Not having a will may not be a disaster, but it will likely mean increased costs and a loss of control over your affairs.

How is the higher U.S. dollar affecting the coin and stamp markets. With the falling of the Canadian dollar and the increase in the U.S. exchange rate to 40% , our business has actual been helped a lot. First of all, we do not add exchange on to our World coins , stamps and paper money. With the increase this year in tourism due to our low dollar we have had a large amount of tourists in buying items that are lower priced than they can buy them in their own country. We are also finding that we are buying many items at strong prices because we are able to ship them out of the country to dealers I know for more than we can get here in Canada.

Jim Richardson, owner Western Coin and Stamp

The high exchange rate has also helped with gold prices in particular. With all the media talking how gold is at a 5 year low, in reality gold is at a 3 year high in Canadian dollars. Gold is at $1,110.00 US but a very strong price of $1,570.00 Canadian. This has helped the investors who made 8% compounded each of the last 3 years ,as well as sellers of gold coins and jewellery who are getting high prices for their items. Note: I see that everyone is receiving the ad from the buyer from Quebec in their mail. Remember our previous columns showed how much extra we pay more than them. JIM

QUESTION: CAN I GET A MORTGAGE TO RENOVATE MY PROPERTY OR PAY OFF MY CREDIT CARDS?

Are we better off Renovating or Re-Locating? That’s the Big Money question!

ANSWER:

ANSWER:

Lisa Manwaring AMP

Yes! Mortgages can be obtained for a number of purposes, including financing home renovations or to consolidate credit card debt. You can also borrow against the equity in your home to invest in the stock market or your own business. There are certain criteria (such as equity in your property and the ability to carry the increased mortgage) … But, there are hundreds of possibilities.

Mike Phillips owner

For obvious reasons your realtor will make a good case to simply re-locate (ah, but not so simple!) Conversely, a good Renovator can take that existing house and make it your Dream Home! In my opinion there are 3 main factors to consider: 1. Do we enjoy living in our present location, as it is a lot of work and expense to re-locate. 2. Can we work with this existing house and bring our ideas to life here. 3. How long do we foresee ourselves in this location. All very important considerations indeed! First is going to be personal for each family and I just take into consideration the upheaval involved to re-locate. Second is where consultation with a professional Renovator can help you in the re-configuration or addition to your existing layout. Third and most important with regards to your investment in any renovation is your commitment to location. If you have a short 1-3 year plan in mind then cosmetics and immediate repairs only or you risk losing most of your investment. If you foresee a 5-10 year stay then I feel you are safe in the 50K to 150K investment into your property upgrades as you are now renovating to increase the value in your home plus adding livability and quality to your lifestyle! Beyond that time frame it’s only about wants vs. needs and the total affordability of your Dream Project! MRP Renovations is here to solve all your renovating Want’s and Need’s! FADING FROM THE SUN

I have a Hot Water Heater that is about 12 years old. It’s past its expiry date but, it seems to be working ok. Should I consider replacing it or wait until it actually breaks? Travis, in Richmond

Q: Summer is coming and I’m concerned about fading from the sun. Do you have a solution?

ANSWER:

The sun causes damage to floors, furniture, paintings and photographs and even blinds! Really, anything exposed to light will fade over time but understand that nothing stops fading entirely. However, there are ways to minimize it.

Today’s Hot Water Heaters have a 6-8 year warranty and are designed to fail after that. If you have gotten 12 years out of yours, you have done well. While your tank might seem to be working ok, you don’t know what is going on in the inside. Do you seem to run out of hot water faster than you used to? That’s an indication of a problem. Take a look at the top and bottom of your tank. If you see rust, that is a sure sign that things are starting to deteriorate and that will increase quickly.Waiting until your Tank actually leaks can be a costly mess as you are potentially looking at 40 or more gallons of water ruining your floor. You may want to look under your tank and check the pan and the drain to see what the leak management scenario is. Replacing a conventional Hot Water tank can be quick and easy. This may also be a good time to consider an ondemand, high-efficiency, heating system. While a little more costly to set-up, the 40% savings on your energy bill, triple the life of the system and unlimited hot water, make it a very attractive option. Note: Boiler systems with poly-b (light grey plastic) piping will require additional and more frequent service.

Fading is caused by 4 things. Ultraviolet (UV) contributes to about 40%. Visible light is about 25%. Heat is also about 25% and normal “wear and tear” constitutes the remaining 10%. Signature Series window films by Budget Blinds are very effective at minimizing each of these factors. There are a range of films to choose from but all of them block out 99.9% of UV light. Films will also reduce solar energy (heat) from 40% to 90% depending on the tint of the film. Also, the darker the tint, the more visible light being blocked. Signature Series window films are an excellent way to reduce fading and will even make it cooler in the house through those summer months.

QUESTION:

We’ve retired and moved further away from my mom who lives alone. At first she was receptive to some outside help, now reluctant. How can we make this work?

Why do some people grind or clench their teeth?

ANSWER:

ANSWER:

Everyone grinds or clenches their teeth. Some more, some less. Most of us don’t even realize we’re doing it. It can be stress related, an abnormal bite, or even genetic. It’s an involuntary habit where 95% of people do it while they are sleeping.

Lots is going on in her immediate world at the moment. While she’s certainly happy for you in your move, she’s relied on you being nearby. Naturally, she will miss you! At the same time, she is trying to wrap her head around the idea of ‘a stranger’ coming into her private space to assist with things she used to easily do herself. She’s possibly also grieving what she perceives as some loss of independence. All that can add up to insecurity and reluctance… for anyone.

Habitual clenching or grinding can lead to serious problems with heavy wear resulting in chipping, fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. It can also affect your jaws by causing or worsening potential joint issues (TMJ). Wearing a night guard is an easy, relatively inexpensive way to treat the problem and could save you a lot of money down the road.

Q: I went for a denture consultation, and I was told A:

that I required soft tissue management because of irritated and damaged gum tissues. What is this?

Soft tissue management is a rehabilitation of damaged gum tissues. Irritation and damage to your gum tissue may result from micro organisms harbored in your dentures’ old acrylic, or ill fitting dentures. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove unhealthy organisms contributing to the infl ammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Second and/or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before continuing the construction of new dentures. Healthy, pink, hard tissues, provide the important base foundation required for a successful denture. New dentures promote a healthy, clean, accurate fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

Feedback BACKGROUNDER:

The B.C. Lottery Corporation is asking the Corporation of Delta, Tsawwassen First Nation and the City of Surrey whether they’re interested in being host to a new casino. Mayor Lois Jackson said Delta would look into the idea. A BCLC spokesperson said it’s too early to talk about locations or type of facility.

Q

Wouldyouliketoseeacasinobuilt inDelta?

Bruce Hutchison

No, I wouldn’t. I think there’s enough around here. I don’t mean Delta itself, but around the Lower Mainland there’s plenty. I’m sure they would like to put one in around the new mall in Tsawwassen. If it goes, I’d imagine that’s where they’d want to put it.

Richard Glasner

No. Believing that they wanted all along to put a new casino in the new mall, this is just a backdoor way to do it.

Shane Symons

I could see that being interesting… That would be something we could have.

Peggy Bidwell

The only thing I hate about things going in is the farmland [being taken]. I’m from Saskatchewan, I’m a farmer. I hate them taking farmland. So if it’s going to go on farmland, I don’t want it. Other than that, yeah.

Rams flag flies high in Kelowna

South Delta U14 and U12 teams beat the heat & opponents to win BC titles South Delta Rams have become a year-round championship producing program. Already established as one of the perennial juggernauts during the fall tackle football season, the Rams have made quick headway during the rapidly growing spring flag football campaign. That was evident during the recent B.C. Community Football Association provincial championships in Kelowna where South Delta’s U14 and U12 teams produced B.C. titles. Those results come on the heels of some Bantam age standouts helping a B.C. team win gold at the Canadian Championships. The association will now turn its attention to the upcoming fall season, with training camps beginning next month. The U14 Rams completed a perfect 9-0 run in the Okanagan heat with a victory over the hometown Kelowna Panthers in a championship game thriller. They entered the event ranked third in the province among 55 teams and defeated several top clubs en route to the title including No. 2 seed Coquitlam in the semi-finals. “We are really proud of our boys; they played their hearts out and left everything they had on the field, said Rams head coach Jon Bey, who was joined on the sidelines by Trevor Norman. “It was amazing to watch them execute the game plans to perfection. We knew coming into the tournament that we could beat anyone, but every player would have to contribute, and we would have to stay healthy.” The Rams were a very difficult team to stop , averaging over 40 points per game all season. Unlike most of their competition, they were dangerous at every position and had too many weapons for teams to defend. They were led by offensive captain and MVP quarterback Hunter Norman, who tore apart many defenses by often finding veteran receivers Jonah Quarry, Steel Bey, Cailean Oulette, and rookie Nick Margharitis.

U14 South Delta Rams Logan Turick and Steel Bey chase down a Prince George opponent during the provincial flag football championships in Kelowna. All Rams players scored touchdowns over the weekend which was a goal and a major accomplishment the boys were proud of. Defensively, the Rams were almost impenetrable. Lukas Marriott, Calvin Slinn and Logan Turick terrified opposing quarterbacks with their rushing and pass blocking. In the semi-final, the Rams held Coquitlam to only one first down in their dominant victory, while defensive captain Bey and veteran Quarry saved the victory with incredible stops on the final two plays of the championship game. Meanwhile, the U12 Rams Gold team’s run to glory saw them string together eight consecutive wins and outscore their opponents 19926 in the process. It was culminated with an epic

U14 Rams celebrate their provincial championship run.

12-0 win over the New West Hyacks in the championship game. Quarterback Kenny Scott was on target all afternoon — hitting Nicholas Jacobs for the opening major. Receivers Matthew Cushing and Tyson Lingham made great catches to continually march the offence down the field. Center Declan Skinner made perfect snaps all game. Defensively, the Rams were superb. Ethan Dodd did not allow any player to beat him on the outside and made some key flags, along with the winning touchdown in the semi-final. On the left edge, Matthew Leyton-Nobbs was unstoppable, flagging any player that came by. Quarterback rusher Josh Margharitis frustrated every offense the Rams came up against

with his speed. That was highlighted by producing two safeties. He also added a major in the final on an interception. In the rear, Darius Hanna, knocked down or intercepted every ball that was thrown his way. He played with intensity and passion all weekend. The Rams defensive core was solidified with one of their most outstanding players — Tyler Jones, who picked off every ball that went up in the air and made some huge flags to nullify even the best offense. Coached by Chris Dodd, with assistance from Dave Jones, the Rams headed to Kelowna ranked fifth among 56 teams. Sunday’s playoff round included a thrilling 14-13 win over North Surrey that saw them rally from a 13-0 deficit.

U12 Rams Gold capped a great season with a B.C. championship.

The West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association was turned upside down last Friday in West Vancouver. The Ladner Pioneers were fresh off a huge 8-7 overtime win one night earlier over the Langley Warriors, in a first place showdown, to remain the league’s only unbeaten team at 7-0-0. That was until the winless North Shore Indians came along. Already with some WLA or NLL offensive standouts in their line-up, the Indians shored up their roster even further with the signings of six more top end players last week. North Shore proceeded to pick up its first win of the season — drubbing the Pioneers 14-5. So is a 1-7 team suddenly the one to beat? Apparently so, even though the Indians will likely have to run the table in their final six games to secure a playoff position. Pioneers head coach Ross Frehlick has seen plenty in his years of involvement as a player and coach in the senior “B” circuit, but never a development quite like this. Typically, it’s teams near the top of the standings adding a key player or two for a potential championship run; not a near makeover of a last place team. “They are putting together one of the best teams money can buy,” said Frehlick

in reference to players receiving financial compensation. “They already had some top end offensive guys and now they have addressed what they need at the back too. “I think our guys were surprised a bit on Friday. We can definitely play better but there’s no doubt that is a very good team.” The Indians were led by seven points from Athen Iannucci. Steve Hinek had four goals, while Alex Gajic and Tyler Garrison each had a pair. Nate Clare scored twice for the Pioneers. The result came after Ladner’s best performance of the season as they battled back to defeat the Warriors in a highly entertaining affair. Langley took a 7-6 lead with 1:13 remaining, however Ryan Keith equalized with 47 seconds left. Sam Clare then completed the comeback with his second of the night on an unassisted effort at the 3:52 mark of overtime. Quinn Waddington had a hat trick, while Mike Berekoff and Nate Clare also scored. Rob Cook was superb in net making 42 saves. The Pioneers have a rare home doubleheader this weekend against the Victoria Wolves and Nanaimo Timbermen. The Wolves visit Ladner Leisure Centre at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Pioneers and Timbermen then square off Sunday (1 p.m.) at the South Delta recreation centre.
