Both the Tsawwassen First Nation and the Corporation of Delta have submitted expressions of interest to host a gaming facility, the B.C. Lottery Corporation announced

Monday.

BCLC had asked three local governments south of the Fraser River to declare by last Friday if they were interested. The City of Surrey was the only one to decline.

BCLC’s evaluation team will now review and assess these

submissions based on a number of factors, said spokesperson Angela Law in an email to the Optimist. Factors include population trends, existing community policies, plans or zoning that permit or restrict gaming, and estimated revenue potential.

Crown and defence believe accused not criminally responsible for murder IAN JACQUES

The trial of Richard Dale Maranda opened Monday with both the Crown and defence asking the judge to find him not criminally responsible for the murder of his father two years ago in Tsawwassen.

The Vancouver resident is charged with seconddegree murder in the stabbing death of Frederick Dale Maranda, 72, in his home on May 18, 2014.

The trial opened in New Westminster Supreme Court before Justice Williams where Maranda entered a plea of not guilty to an amended count of second-degree murder through his lawyer David Crossin.

Following the plea, Crown prosecutor Wendy Stephen presented her opening statement.

“There are two major issues to be dealt with in this case. The first is whether the Crown has proven beyond a reasonable doubt the offence of second-degree murder and the second, whether Mr. Maranda is not criminally responsible by reason of a mental disorder,” said Stephen. “You will hear in due course that the Crown and the defence

Stephen then presented the court with the agreed statement of fact.

“In essence, Mr. Maranda went to the home of Mr. Maranda Sr. armed with a knife, and went into the home, attacked him with the knife, leaving him dead.

Mr. Maranda then left the home, drove up to 100 Mile House and then back where he was arrested on Highway 1 by the police about 1 a.m. on May 19.”

In order to be found not criminally responsible due to a mental illness, there is a two-step approach that the court must take, Stephen said.

“First of all there must be a finding that Mr. Maranda was suffering from a disease of the mind at the time of the offence and that disease of the mind led him to not appreciate either the nature or quality of the act or the act was wrong,” she said.

Stephen told the court the defence retained the services of Dr. Roy O’Shaughnessy, a forensic

psychiatrist, who completed a review and submitted his report to the Crown in February. The Crown then retained the services of Dr. Janet Smith, another forensic psychiatrist, to provide her opinion, which was received in June.

“The essence of both doctors’ reports is that Mr. Maranda was suffering from a disease of the mind, schizophrenia, at the time when he killed his father and that because of delusions brought on by the schizophrenia, he did not know that killing his father was wrong,” added

Stephen.

Crossin then presented his opening statement.

“There is no question, of course, that my client killed his father. The issue is whether he should be found not guilty by way of a mental disorder. These are the questions and the facts before you. It is my submission that the evidence you will hear and be presented by the agreed statement of fact will demonstrate that Mr. Maranda is not criminally responsible for killing his father.

I don’t think there will be any question you will find that he has been suffering from schizophrenia for many years.”

Crossin told the court his client was diagnosed around the age of 30 in 2000. At that time, he spent two months hospitalized before being released under a regime of anti-psychotic medications.

In 2003 a serious incident occurred with his father, where Richard launched an unprovoked attack by pouring hot water on him and stabbing him in the neck with a knife.

Richard was charged with assault, but was found not criminally responsible.

“That’s occurred and we’re going to follow up with some more consultation further down the road,” he said.

Asked about a possible location for a gaming facility, he said once a site is

identified through BCLC and the selection process, “we’ll determine if that’s a good fit for our community.”

During a meeting last month Delta council agreed to send an expression of interest to BCLC. A report to council noted staff believe that any potential gaming facility would require significant additional amenities, including a hotel, confer-

ence centre and restaurants to support Delta’s tourism strategy.

It also noted staff reviewed potential locations and believe the only suitable site is the Delta Town & Country Inn property. One of the attachments to the report was a letter from the property owner expressing support for it to be considered as a potential site.

A BCLC press release explained the expression of interest process is intended to be a first step in gauging interest and doesn’t constitute a commitment by either BCLC or the local government to

BCLC had also asked governments on the North Shore if they are interested in hosting a facility. Two out of five expressed interest.

Delta looking to sell land to fund new arts centre

The municipality is considering selling off public land in North Delta and allowing the purchaser to build an apartment complex there.

It would be part of a plan for Delta to get the money to pay for a new performing arts centre in the community.

Delta has sent out a notice to residents about the rezoning, subdivision and development permit application at 11489 and 11503 84th Ave., where Hari Pal Sharma is proposing to purchase a portion of municipally-owned North Delta Recreation Centre property. The idea is to consolidate it with the adjacent property and develop two apartment buildings. The buildings would house 104 units and range in height from four to six storeys with indoor amenity space.

If the application is approved, Delta would use the funds from the land sale to construct an arts and culture centre on the

Council recently awarded a contract to a firm to come up with a preliminary design for a new arts centre that would include a community theatre, areas for music lessons and art shows, multipurpose rooms and social gathering space.

A public information meeting on the land sale and development proposal will take place at the North Delta Recreation Centre tonight from 7 to 9 p.m.

Delta will consider developing charging stations due to increasing requests from electric vehicle owners. power) In 2012, in partnership with Metro Vancouver, Delta received provincial funding to identify potential Level 2 charging stations within the community, but after a review at the time it was determined the demand didn’t justify the cost of installation.

A report this month to council noted electric vehicle sales have been steadily increasing in Canada with the largest number being sold in B.C. As of the end of 2015, there were 2,225 electric vehicles registered in Metro Vancouver and 459

publicly available charging stations in the province.

The report notes provincial rebates and the opening of high occupancy lanes to electric vehicles are expected to further increase the number.

The report also notes no local governments in B.C. charge for the use of public charging stations. The workshop would include discussion about potential fees as well as potential sources of funding for station installation. The cost of purchasing and installing an electric vehicle station is approximately $10,000 to $15,000.

Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta could soon have more publicly available electric car charging stations.

A proposal will be brought forward by civic staff at an upcoming Delta council workshop to look at opportunities to build more stations, a request that’s increasing from electric car owners expecting charging stations at municipal facilities.

In Delta, there are publicly available Level 2 charging stations at Boundary Bay Regional Park and at the Canadian Wildlife Services office on Westham Island. At Boundary Bay Airport, there are 120 volt electric plug-ins (Level 1) that allow electric vehicles with onboard charging systems to receive a charge.

Level 2 chargers require four to six hours to fully charge an electric vehicle’s battery, but can provide a reasonable “top up” in one to two hours (20 to 40 kilometres worth of battery

Delta police took to Twitter to show the pellet gun that was allegedly used to fire at another vehicle on Highway 99 last week.

Driver is arrested at home in East Ladner

A suspect was arrested last Wednesday after Delta police responded to a 911 call about a man in a vehicle who had fired shots at another vehicle.

Both were travelling on Highway 99 through Delta, according to police.

“Officers, including RCMP officers who were also notified of the incident, headed in to the area

of East Ladner where the suspect vehicle was last seen,” police said in a post on social media. “Flagged down by an alert citizen who reported suspicious activity at his neighbour’s house, officers were able to locate and stop the suspect vehicle.”

The driver was arrested and a search of the vehicle resulted in a pellet gun

“Fortunately, the suspect was cooperative during the arrest and the only injuries were some dents in the victim’s vehicle,” the post stated.

Police are recommending charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

It’s been a slow go on local highways after a pair of truck rollovers in recent days.

The driver was taken from the scene by ambulance to hospital for precautionary reasons, according to Cpl. Peter Somerville. Suspect uses Pokemon as ruse

Delta police are recommending charges of sexual assault against a 31-year-old man from New Westminster after an incident just before midnight at Annieville Park last Wednesday.

Police said a 19-year-old female from Delta had met the man through a chatting app and arranged to meet at the North Delta

t’s become such a non-factor here that you almost forget the lack of women in politics is still an issue in many other parts of this country.

I can remember it being a big deal back in 1990 when Beth Johnson broke through and became Delta’s first female mayor, but when she retired after serving three terms, and was replaced by Lois Jackson, the novelty of the top civic post being held by a woman had worn off. I imagine the fact Jackson had been on Delta council since breaking the gender barrier back in the early 1970s contributed to that familiarity because electing a second straight female mayor didn’t move the needle at all.

Around that time Val Roddick became the area’s first female MLA, which was worth noting, although by the time it got to her successor, Vicki Huntington, and to our two most recent MPs, Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Carla Qualtrough, the notion of a female politician simply ceased being an issue at any level in Delta.

It’s strange to think in this day and age that gender somehow plays a role, but looking at the numbers across the province and throughout the country, it’s obviously still an issue in many areas.

I suspect there are many factors that contribute to that situation, although I think Jackson raised a pertinent point when talking to our Ian Jacques about the difficulties women in particular face when trying to juggle politics and family life. The discrepancy has to be driven by something like that because when it gets down to the characteristics of a good elected official, it’s pretty obvious that neither gender has the upper hand.

I have often marvelled at the thickness of Jackson’s skin as she chairs a particularly raucous public hearing, which are apt to happen in this neck of the woods. After a speaker has just finished berating her for ruining the community by having the audacity to even consider the offending development application, the mayor will, with a smile on her face, politely offer thanks for the input and welcome the next speaker, who will invariably start the process all over again.

I don’t care whether you’re a man or a woman, it takes a special someone to not only put up with that kind of abuse, but to come back for more year after year.

Bridging the rapid transit gap

’m going to chime in on the Massey tunnel/bridge issue.

It was a done deal until some of Metro Vancouver’s mayors decided otherwise. This time I’m siding with Mayor Lois Jackson who recently suggested that her colleagues kindly butt out.

For starters, building a new tunnel would be cheaper and less invasive on farmland, but it ain’t going to happen, so let’s move on to what we know is in the works — a new bridge.

I’ve had discussions with folks on both sides of the Fraser, and many solutions have been voiced, some of which would actually reduce the daily commute right now. I am just the messenger in this compilation of good ideas.

The biggest stumbling block is that it requires collaboration between the Ministry of Transportation and TransLink.

The mayors can have their say but the final decision lies with these two stakeholders.

An immediate fix is simple: Toll all of the Fraser River and Burrard Inlet bridges $1 each way and just watch the traffic reduce by moving to the underused Port Mann and Golden Ears crossings.

Now that TransLink is finally collecting its fares on SkyTrain, it should reduce the tolls on those two bridges immediately while it phases in TReO’s cameras on the older bridges. A six-month trial starting now is recommended.

Re-prioritize future commitments for SkyTrain and/or light rail transit to where it will have the greatest impact in the shortest time. The Evergreen extension from Coquitlam to North Road

is underway. There are plans to extend the Millennium Line underground along the West Broadway corridor and Surrey wants light rail between Guilford and Newton with a second extension to Langley. They are also considering a gondola up Burnaby Mountain. So, you might ask, where is Delta in all of these grand plans?

Some day in the future they will “consider” rapid transit over the new Massey bridge, which won’t be completed until 2022. It strikes me as a no-brainer that we should have SkyTrain or light rapid transit coming across the new bridge when it opens in 2022.

The first leg would extend the Canada Line from Brighouse in Richmond to the ferry terminal, with stations at Ladner, Tsawwassen and the TFN malls. A second leg could eventually go out to White Rock — after the Vancouver and Surrey extensions.

The reasons Delta should trump those two cities’ expansions are many: 1. They already have SkyTrain and better transit services.

2. Delta is where the greatest

need and traffic bottlenecks are.

3. Our population is growing dramatically and with such poor transit services, we are forced to use cars.

4. The ferry terminal is already beyond capacity for parking on summer weekends.

5. The two new mega malls opening in October at the Tsawwassen First Nation will generate unknown traffic increases.

A SkyTrain/LRT commitment by 2022 to coincide with the bridge opening should be given priority now. With the revenues generated from all the bridges being moderately tolled, there may be enough to finance everyone’s extensions in a timely manner.

The unprecedented success of the Canada Line to the airport should prove that an extension to the ferry terminal would be even more successful.

It also refutes the argument the bridge will create new bottlenecks at the Oak Street and Knight Street bridges.

This would not happen if we had SkyTrain servicing South Delta. Most folks would happily commute using the SkyTrain and avoid the expense and frustrations of driving into the city.

Wait and make bridge an election issue

Editor: As a lay person I need someone to explain to me the benefits of having a 10-lane bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel.

I read that adding to the existing tunnel was much cheaper, efficient and wouldn’t take as long to complete. I think the tax-

payers have been misled in more ways than one.

I can’t see how moving the traffic quickly to the Oak Street or Knight Street bridges will help in decreasing travel time, especially with all the affordable housing south of the Fraser River.

Premier Christy Clark stood with Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau at the climate conference in Paris and was supportive of the changes we need to make to reduce climate change.

To me, building more bridges does not reduce fossil fuels, it will only help to increase them.

Yes, there are lanes for more buses, but they too run on fossil fuels. There’s

a provision for rapid transit on the bridge but that is way off in the future.

Why not now? A straight run down Highway 99 to Bridgeport and, voila, more people are out of their cars.

Salmon, agricultural land and what else will be impacted by building a bridge?

If Clark and her government are so sure this crossing is needed the way they propose, please make it an election issue in next spring’s campaign.

Stop preparations now and let the taxpayers decide.

We want all the facts from both sides.

Healthy river worth far more Can’t offset the loss than just port productivity

Editor: As a resident of Delta for over 80 years, I have lived and worked within the Fraser River estuary and have seen the slow erosion of an already depleted valuable ecosystem.

It’s an ecosystem that has been recognized as a wetland of international significance and for its migratory birds, fish species and diverse habitats that support a multitude of species.

We must not forget the fact the-once mighty Fraser River estuary has

already lost 80 per cent of its former self through diking and reclamation, leaving only 20 per cent for its survival and its ability to support an ecosystem that provides for the ongoing life of migratory birds and fish species.

Continuing to allow major industrialization of the estuary that further reduces the ability of the ecosystem to survive cannot and should not be allowed.

Terminal 2 is an expansion of the port at Roberts Bank where previous

expansion was considered detrimental to the salmon migration, yet it still went ahead.

Expanding the port to facilitate container exports from the U.S. does not make any sense at the expense of our own valuable resource.

A continued healthy and productive Fraser River estuary is worth billions of dollars more to all Canadians, both aboriginal other, than making our port more productive for a few.

Help with flat tire is much appreciated

Editor: Sometimes it’s nice to say something encouraging for a change.

On Wednesday morning on a trip to a hospital with my wife for treatment that she needed, we got a flat tire on Highway 17. With

not much time to spare, I struggled to put the spare tire on the vehicle as quickly as possible despite being unfamiliar with the car.

It was so encouraging to have a young man leave his old VW bus on the

other side of the road and cross the highway to lend a hand. I don’t know if he lives near or if he was on the way to the ferry terminal, but he was certainly appreciated for his selfless act. God Bless him.

I have serious concerns about the use of transplants to “offset” damage to existing ecosystems. Children wonder if items ‘real’ at Delta Naturalists display

“Is it real?”

During the recent Vancouver Landfill open house, I had a fun morning helping at the Delta Naturalists Society display.

Hundreds of children took part in bus tours of the landfill and learned about recycling and the environment.

The display spread over four tables and included feathers, bird nests, wasp nests, animal skulls and bones, shells, photographs and colouring sheets. The collection has been gradually augmented by club members over 25 years of doing community events, and the buzz of excited kids around it was a testament to the naturalists’ efforts.

Children had lots of questions and comments, but one that I heard more frequently than expected took me by surprise. “Is it real?” some children asked as they picked up an owl’s feather or stroked the smooth interior of a Pacific oyster shell. “Is it real?”

I have volunteered at such community events many times in the past, though not in the last couple of years, yet I do not remember ever before being asked whether a rock, or bones, a shell, or a feather were real. This is surely a sign of how little time children now spend exploring outdoors.

There are many native animals at the landfill in Burns Bog: bald eagles were flying overhead and

black-tailed deer browsed in the woodland. I saw a doe and its newborn fawn near where the tables were set up, and white-crowned sparrows sang from the bushes around us.

I wonder how many of the children were aware of them?

The students were polite and enthusiastic. They chatted as they handled the various natural items, though many seemed to know little about them.

The word “endangered” came up, and perhaps they had heard more about nature’s losses than the animals and plants flourishing around them.

Children’s disconnection from the natural world has been written about by a number of authors, notably Richard Louv, yet it is proving challenging to remediate.

Access to nature may be difficult for children.

There are lovely natural areas and parks in the Lower Mainland, yet getting to them nearly always involves a car ride. If gardens and school grounds were wildlife-friendly, they would create a starting place for nature knowledge.

There are so many benefits that come from enjoyment of the natural world.

Naturalist mentors are important and BC Nature’s 53 community clubs and NatureKids BC are leading the way. Check out their programs this summer.

“The Corporation of Delta Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 3950, 1985” Amendment (Land Use Designation) Bylaw No. 7506 To amend the Future Land Use Plan in Schedule A of “The Corporation of Delta Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 3950, 1985” by changing the land use designation from A Agricultural to I Industrial.

“Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 2750, 1977” Amendment Bylaw No. 7507 To amend “Delta Zoning Bylaw No. 2750, 1977” by rezoning the subject property from I3 Extraction Industrial to Comprehensive Development Zone No. 474 in order to permit the following uses: low impact industry, warehousing, wholesaling and distribution, transportation, communication and other utilities, trade schools, scientific and technology research, equipment sales, repair and servicing operations and eating and drinking establishments. Office operation uses, retail sales and outside storage would be permitted ancillary to a primary use; however, container storage would be restricted. Comprehensive Development Zone No. 474 would also restrict uses that have a higher potential for emissions of air contaminants or spills of hazardous materials.

Development Permit LU007445 To address streamside protection and enhancement issues related to the preservation, protection, restoration and enhancement of fish and wildlife and their habitats in and along streams.

Agricultural Land Reserve Exclusion The owner has applied to exclude the 62.7 ha (155 ac) subject property from the Agricultural Land Reserve which requires approval from the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission. A resolution of Council is required in order for the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission to consider the Agricultural Land Reserve exclusion application.

Agricultural Land Reserve Inclusion The owner has applied to include a 78.1 ha (193 ac) property (Lot B), into the Agricultural Land Reserve which requires approval from the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission. A resolution of Council is required in order for the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission to consider the Agricultural Land Reserve inclusion application.

Regional Growth Strategy Amendment The applicant is requesting an amendment to Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy by changing the regional land use designation from Agricultural to Industrial and to include the subject property in the Urban Containment Boundary. A resolution of Council is required in order for Metro Vancouver to consider a Regional Growth Strategy amendment.

Difficult for Delta to dredge up funding

New government in Ottawa hasn’t resulted in different answer on clearing secondary channels SANDOR GYARMATI

It may be a new government in Ottawa but, so far, it’s the same answer when it comes to the issue of dredging.

A recent letter from federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna to Delta Mayor Lois Jackson confirmed there’s still no commitment to funding, nor establishing responsibility for local channel dredging.

The mayor, on behalf of Delta council, had written to the minister hoping to get the conversation started on a dredging plan for the secondary channels of the Fraser River. She was told, “Environment Canada does not have a mandate or funding available for dredging of navigational channels.”

Dredging of all channels had been a federal responsibility until 1999, when the port authority took over, but only the main navigational channel was maintained. That meant silt accumulated in the

secondary channels.

The volunteer Ladner Sediment Group lobbied for years to rectify that situation and in late 2012 the group finally saw some success with the announcement of a $10-million project to dredge channels in Ladner and Steveston.

That money is almost used up, and no further dredging will occur unless new funding is identified.

Jackson was part of a delegation to Ottawa earlier this year to meet federal officials to discuss several issues of concern to Delta, including the need for a sustainable dredging program.

In her request to the minister, Jackson wrote, “Local shipping channels provide critical access to fishing harbours, riverbased businesses, float home communities and marinas, and without regular dredging, these channels quickly fill-up with sediment, impeding access and making navigation hazardous.”

Delta had also requested Environment Canada

waive and refund fees paid to deposit the collected sediment out at sea, fees that cut into the amount of dredging work that could be done.

McKenna stated there are no provisions for refunding fees.

“These fees are used to fund the monitoring of disposal sites to ensure that they are used in a sustainable manner and that suitable sites are available for the disposal of dredged material. Refunds can only be obtained for quantities not disposed of if the entire approved volume of dredged material available on a permit is not used,” she wrote.

A report to council last year noted without regular maintenance dredging, sediment will continue to accumulate until a critical situation develops, something that could be avoided with regular dredging every two to three years.

Victoria funding upgrades to airport Boundary Bay Airport will receive a $174,300 grant to fund upgrades under the B.C. Air Access Program, Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton announced this week.

The funding will improve safety and meet increasing demand for helicopter and fixed wing traffic by relocating current helipads to a new dedicated area separated

from both apron and taxiways.

“Upgrading our regional airports is a priority,” said Hamilton.

“We understand the important role they play in connecting the people of our province, connecting businesses to consumers and in connecting B.C. to the world.”

Through the B.C. Air Access Program, the pro-

vincial government cost shares with public airports on development projects that allow airports to improve safety, accommodate larger aircraft and more frequent flights, and further support the continuing growth of local and provincial economies.

The government is investing $24 million over three years through the program. Last year, the

program provided just over $6 million towards improvements at 10 regional airports across the province.

“We are proud to work with both the province and the Corporation of Delta to improve service to our customers,” said Fred Kaiser, president and CEO of Alpha Aviation, operator of the municipally-owned airport.

The sky above Boundary Bay Airport will be awash in colour and history on Saturday as the Boundary Bay Airshow celebrates 75 years of flight in Delta.

The Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation Inc. have once again joined forces to host the family-friendly airshow.

Gates open at 11 a.m. with the opening ceremonies set for 12:15 p.m.

Admission is free with ample free parking available.

From the excitement in the skies above to the displays on the ground, the children’s activities or the many food options, there will be plenty to see and do at the show.

Featured performances include: P38 Lightning,

F4U Corsair, B17 Flying Fortress, Nakayima Hayabusa (Japanese Oscar) aircraft, Harvard air race, Yellow Thunder, the Granleys, the Mrazeks and Jon Melby.

A crowd favourite will sure to be the plane/ car races. Melby’s plane will race a McLaren car, sponsored by Miles End Motors, and Renny Price’s plane will race a Ford GT, sponsored by Brown Bros.

Boundary Bay Airport was constructed during the Second World War as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan on land expropriated from local farmers.

Construction of the 192-hectare (480-acre)

airfield began on Dec. 6, 1940, although work proceeded slowly as boggy areas of Boundary Bay had to be filled with hay and gravel.

By April 10, 1941, the runways and gravel roads were operational and the No. 18 Elementary Flight Training School was established.

On July 2, 1941, thenprime minister William Mackenzie King officially opened the airport with great fanfare.

Show performers will be dressed in period clothing and there will be music from the 1940s as well as vintage aircraft.

Boundary Bay Airshow

Pilots are set to put on dazzling show

This year’s Boundary Bay Airshow will feature pilots from across North America eager to share their talents and expertise with aviation enthusiasts: Grace Borsari Watch Borsari take to the sky in her Eurocopter EC 120, the world’s quietest helicopter, to demonstrate its unique flight characteristics.

Bud Granley Flying has been a part of Granley’s life since he was nine.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956 after earning his wings with a Royal Canadian Air Cadet scholarship. Granley then instructed on the T-6 Harvard and was selected to be the base solo demonstration pilot on the Harvard, thus starting his career as an airshow pilot.

The T-6/Harvard, Yak-55 or the Fouga Magister are his usual airshow planes.

He also flies a formation aerobatic act with his son Ross using his Yak-55 and Ross in theYak-18T. Ross Granley Granley joined the

Canadian Air Force in 1985 and received his wings in 1987.

He was selected to fly as the number two pilot with the Snowbirds and after his tour of duty with the Snowbirds he moved on to fighters at Cold Lake, Alta. He underwent basic and advanced fighter pilot training in the CF-5 and CF-18. He earned top honors in both courses then flew the CF-18 with 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron for three years.

Jon Melby Melby is an airshow pilot with more than 35 years of flying experience.

He has flown dozens of aircraft types and currently performs in a highly modified Pitts S-1-11B bi-plane.

Receiving his pilot’s license by the age of 19, he owned several Cessna passenger type aircraft, and in 1996, he purchased a Pitts S2B Bi-plane and spent three months training to compete in aerobatic contests.

Now, flying extreme freestyle aerobatics at airshows, he encourages both adults and children to pursue their dreams.

John and Richard Mrazek Veteran air show pilot and performer John Mrazek, along with his Harvard Mark IV Pussycat II, will dazzle audiences with a spectacular aerial ballet. With lots of noise, smoke, and skill, his aerobatic performance will bring the entire airshow

crowd to a standstill.

For a beautiful turbo-jet aerobatic and formation display, he will be joined by his son Richard, both flying L29 Delfins. Richard also flies a graceful aerobatic display in a Yak 18T. David and Drew Watson David Watson flies purely for recreation; he enjoys the discipline and skill required for aerobatic and formation flying.

In his younger years, he tagged along with his

father and other Western Warbird Association members, flying (or riding) in everything from Chipmunks and Harvards to Mentors and Expeditors.

He now combines his talents of aerobatics and formation flying to demonstrate his abilities to airshow crowds in Canada and the United States.

Brother Drew’s passion for warbirds started when he had his first ride in his father’s ex-RCAF Chipmunk. He purchased his first airplane, a Fleet Canuck, in 2000 and obtained his private pilot license in this airplane in 2002.

Renny Price Price is a veteran airshow pilot and performer and is a former airline captain, having flown Boeing 737, Airbus A-320 and McDonald Douglas DC-8s.

His total flight time today is 25,000 hours and currently flying a Sovereign C-680.

He also teaches aerobatics out of his home airport of Aurora, Ore.

I am glad you noticed. I purchased the largest World Wide coin collection I have seen in years. It consisted of 17 volumes of coins on 20 pocket pages. It went from A to Z and 1700s to 2000s in years.

When I first looked at this collection I was amazed at its variety and confused on how I never met the client before especially since we carry the largest selection of world coins in B.C. It turns out that the collection was put together over years but done back east. So far I have worked on and priced just less than half the coins and more are being done every day. I am starting to leave new boxes of these coins in both my stores as well as filling up the cases.

I am also making an offer on another 10 volume collection of world coins, which I hope to finish for next week.

Seasonal workers play beautiful game

Rotary Club of Tsawwassen hosts soccer tournament for employees from greenhouses The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen hosted 180 Mexican and Guatemalan seasonal workers from local greenhouses recently for a free barbecue and soccer tournament.

Club president Shane Todhunter said a whoopping 46 games were played during the tourney at Holly Park.

“We were thrilled to bring everyone out for some fun today, but we were blown away by the skills of the players,” Todhunter said. “I saw at least three bicycle kicks.”

Club vice president Leslie Abramson brought the idea forward and helped co-ordinate the day.

“We really wanted to offer these hard working family men a fun day out,” she said. “The next time you are out in the community and see some of the fellows cycling on their way into town, make sure to give a wave and say, ‘Hola.’

“We all understand that

they miss their families while they are away and we can all do our part to make sure the whole community is a welcoming place to be.”

Dirk de Jong from Village Farms said he thought the tournament was “fantastic” and added the participants feel their contributions to Delta’s economy are respected when members of the community reach out in such a way.

Atanacio Placio came out to enjoy the barbecue and to cheer on his fellow workers. He is from Mexico and has worked for 10 years in Canada, working 10 months a year and going home for two months.

He has been able to purchase a home and send his sons to school. His older son is the first person in the family to attend university.

He is also constructing his own home in Guatemala and when he returns, he plans to go back to school to study engineering.

with department volunteers, passing out bike reflectors to players and spectators. Members of the department have visited greenhouses to talk about bike safety and policing in Delta.

“Our community-based

policing model may look quite different to what they may have experienced in their home countries so our members spend time communicating that, in Canada, the police are here to assist when called,” Dubord said. “We want to build relationships based upon trust with the workers.”

Aurora and husband Jose Pesquera both work as interpreters and have had time to get to know many of the workers well.

“The workers come here to maximize their earning potential so they work up to nine hours a day, six days a week, pruning, picking, transplanting and cleaning,” Aurora explained.

“The main reason they come to Canada to work is that they can make in one hour what they get paid for an entire day’s labour at home and so there is a huge improvement in quality of life for their families.”

Someone forgot to tell the Tsawwassen Blues they had to pay their dues first.

Making their first-ever appearance at Provincial “B” Cup Championships, the U17 girls rep soccer team capped a remarkable season by being crowned B.C. champs after a 1-0 victory over the Burnaby Impact on Sunday in Penticton. The result came on the heels of the Blues winning the Coastal “B” Cup back in May. Prior to this season, they had never advanced past the Coastal semi-finals.

It marks the first time a local girls soccer team has tasted Provincial “B” Cup glory since the Ladner Attack won back-to-back titles in 2008-09. Ironically, it happens when the Tsawwassen Soccer Club has merged with Ladner. The team will be known as South Delta United for their final season at the U18 level.

“I didn’t know if we should get (championship) gear as our old or new name,” laughed head coach Richard Lowe. “We just ended up buying (some of the Provincial Cup merchandise) up there.”

“I think the girls are beginning to realize just exactly what they have accomplished in their

very first time at this tournament. I know our parents are absolutely amazed with the season we have had.”

The cup run was by no means an easy one on and off the field.

The Blues were part of a tough four-team pool group that included Coastal Cup finalist Vancouver United and the Sur-Del Selects — a team they had defeated in the Coastal semifinals. They were also not at full strength and needed to call-up three players to bring a roster of 15 to the Okanagan.

Tsawwassen opened with a 5-3 win over Prince George which proved to be a key result in locking up a spot in the final. The locals then played SurDel to a scoreless draw and needed to beat Vancouver to finish on top of their pool and ahead of Prince George.

The game was scoreless in the second half when the Blues had a goal called back.

Frustrated by the ruling, Tsawwassen poured it on to produce four unanswered goals for a decisive victory.

“It was a 0-0 game with 35 minutes left and their goalie got hurt on the disallowed goal that really should have counted,” added Lowe.

“The girls were so upset that they just dug deep and completely dominated the rest of the

game.”

On the other side of the draw, Burnaby had breezed to the final with a 3-0 record, outscoring its opponents 10-1 in the process.

The Blues controlled the opening 45 minutes of the final and were finally rewarded on a second half goal by Jessica Goodfellow.

Burnaby applied tremendous pressure in the closing minutes but couldn’t produce the equalizer.

The girls will have only a few weeks off before beginning preparation for the 2016-17 season. Lowe says he will have 11 of his original 17 players returning, losing two of them to ACL knee injuries.

Lacrosse community rallies together to host fundraiser game Saturday for former Pioneer The lacrosse community is stepping up to show support for a Ladner Pioneer alumni and his family.

It was about 18 months ago Mark Goundrey was diagnosed with dementia. It’s unfortunately a battle the always gritty 44-yearold can’t win. The Ladner resident

was part of a powerhouse Pioneers team that won the President’s Cup in 1998 and earned bronze a year earlier.

Now, his former teammates and friends will be holding a big fundraiser — Mark’s Game “Always Got Your Back” — on Saturday at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

“That is what best describes Mark as a player, a true teammate who would do anything for his team,” said Pioneer alumni Derek Murrell. “He is a guy who other teams hated but let me assure you if they had him on their team he would be loved.”

An alumni game will feature

the 1998 national championship team. The players are all paying $50 to participate while spectators are being charged $20. There will be several other activities as well, including a barbecue.

The event runs from 2-5 p.m. and the Pioneers invite the entire community for a great cause.

South Delta Hawks fastpitch team closed out an excellent season with a solid showing at recent U19C Provincial Championships in Port Alberni.

With many of the girls in their third and final year at this age level, hopes were high as the team began play on Friday against the Parksville Rage.

The Hawks jumped out to 2-0 first inning lead when North Delta call-up Tricia Kilbrai tripled and cashed in two runners. The team scored three more in the third en route to a 15-3 romp. Annie Gray scored three runs and Olivia Merritt went the distance on the mound for the win. Kilbrai was the team’s game MVP. South Delta’s second game was against the host Alberni Valley Blazers.

Kyra Wheatley was on the mound for Hawks and had an excellent outing.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, however, the Blazers proved to be an insurmountable challenge. Despite some spectacular defensive play from Keira Gray and Morgan Tucker and notable hitting by game MVP Ashley Hughes, the the Blazers prevailed 9-1.

South Delta’s first game on Saturday was against the Richmond Strykers, a team that

had defeated the Hawks in league play.

Ashley Ives excelled at the plate and in the field, Merritt had nine strikeouts and game MVP Taylor Rana was an offensive force. Nicole Teager, with one inning of relief pitching, helped seal a 9-2 victory.

It all came down to the final round-robin game on Saturday afternoon against the unbeaten Chilliwack Stealers.

Behind some great pitching and superb defence, the Hawks held the Stealers to five runs through the seven innings.

Despite some solid hitting from Chanel Orlitzky and a great all-round game by game MVP Ashley Ives, the team could only generate one run, losing by a 5-1 score.

The result knocked the Hawks out of the tournament by a three-run (tie-breaker) margin. As it turned out, the two teams that defeated them went on to win gold (Chilliwack) and silver (Alberni Valley).

All in all, it was an excellent weekend for the team that capped off a very successful season. Coaches Scott Wheatley, Matt Ives and Craig Merritt thank the parents for their support throughout the season and, of course, all the girls on the team for their effort and commitment.

It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce that John Sawatzky went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 12, at the age of 89 while in residence at the White Rock Seniors Village. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Agnes, of 65 years, his three children, Sharon (Hagel), Robert (former wife, Shelley Kenney), and Lawrence (Lori), as well as eight grandchildren (Sonny, Shayn, Kimberly, Melissa, Emily (David), and Kai, Piper and Tate) as well as three great-grandchildren (Dustin, Kailyn and Brayden).

The family will greatly miss his twinkling blue eyes, his warm, child-like smiles and his generous, heartfelt hugs. John was born in Manitoba and moved to Vancouver in his early twenties, where he met and married Agnes.

A plumber by trade, he was also a jack-of-all trades, even building one of his own homes. He enjoyed many hobbies, but his favorite was woodworking. He also started his own Plumbing company in Ladner. A few months later, his son Lawrence joined the company, and continued to work as a partner with John for many years, and continues to operate the company to this day.

Once retired, John and Agnes enjoyed touring in their RV and spending quality time with their grandchildren. In his later years, John turned to his passion of woodworking. From making furniture to candleholders, to being the apartment building maintenance handyman until he was 80, John kept himself quite busy.

MULLAN, Gordon James May 12, 1961 - July 8, 2016 The Mullan family regrets to announce the death of Gordon James in Calgary on July 8th, following complications from a heart attack. Gordon was a complicated man with many talents and a kind heart for people, animals and nature. His sense of humour was unique and he was quick with a quip or witticism. We will miss him.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Monica Widdra on July 1st, 2016 at the age of 90. Monica was born in Riga, Latvia. After raising her family in Neuss, Germany, she came to live in Tsawwassen in 1990 together with her husband Gerhard, who predeceased her in 1997. She will be lovingly remembered as a supportive wife, mother, grandmother and friend, as well as an avid traveler, skat player, and enthusiastic tennis fan. She leaves to mourn her daughters Uli Marler (Allan) and Christine von Saarn (Paul), and grandchildren Angus, Nonie, and Christian. Rest in peace Mum, you are free now.
