Long weekend fun at Sun Fest 44th annual celebration adds drive-in movie this year
The B.C. Day long weekend can only mean one thing — it’s time for the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. The 44th annual summertime celebration will feature all kinds of activities beginning Saturday and running through to the holiday Monday. Most of the action will be centered at Winskill Park, but there will be events elsewhere in the community.
New this year is a DriveIn Movie Night that takes place Sunday at Beach Grove Elementary. Tickets for Back to the Future are free but must be booked in advance at www.sunfestival.ca. Among the returning favourites is Monday’s Rotary Sun Festival Parade, which starts at 11 a.m. and heads south on 56th Street from 16th Avenue to Winskill Park.
The park will play host to a Kids Fun Zone, slo-pitch and volleyball tournaments, a classic car show, stage entertainment, marketplace, pancake breakfast, beer garden, food vendors and more. An antique fair takes place Sunday and Monday at the South Delta Recreation Centre. • See pages 11 to 23 for all your Tsawwassen Sun Festival coverage.

Construction continues on Tsawwassen Commons, which will feature about 100 stores and 550,000 square feet of retail space.
Phased opening for mall
Tenants at Tsawwassen Commons won’t open doors all at once, developer says IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
There’s a flurry of construction activity at the Tsawwassen Commons site as the 550,000-squarefoot outdoor mall continues to take shape on Tsawwassen First Nation land. Last week, representatives of the Property Development Group, the company developing the site adjacent to Tsawwassen Mills, took the Optimist on a tour. According to construction manager Nicole Asselin, phase one is well underway with anchor tenants Wal-Mart, Rona and Canadian Tire all being constructed. She said construction is on schedule, although Tsawwassen Commons won’t open in conjunction with the fashion mall next door in early October. “Our plan is to have all the base buildings in phase one complete in October. Paving will also
be done so then it will just be a question of who wants to open when,” Asselin said. Asselin said phase two construction, which will consist of more standalone buildings, would begin later this year once all the permitting and agreements are signed with the TFN. One confirmed business in phase two is a Shell gas station, which is expected to open in December. PetSmart, Marks Work Warehouse and Dollarama have been confirmed tenants for some time. Recent additions include HomeSense, Metro Liquor, Nando’s Chicken, Wings Tap and Grill, A&W, Wendy’s and Starbucks, with the latter three all offering drive-thru locations. “We’re sitting right now at 70 per cent preleased,” said Property Development Group partner David Coon. “I have a national tenant meeting me here today (July 20)

Rona is one of the anchor tenants. It’s scheduled to open next spring. and we do have an offer from them, but at this point I can’t say who it is. What I can say, and I say this as a former resident of Tsawwassen, is everyone will just love this tenant as there is a real void in the current market.” Coon said he has another potential tenant seeking a 20,000-square-foot space visiting from Toronto at the end of the month. “Our vision here is to have 95 per cent leased by the summer of 2017 and depending on the size of

the tenants, we expect around 100 retailers in total when the full mall is complete,” Coon said. “One of the major selling factors for us when these proposed tenants come out here is that they can see the vision, they can physically see the buildings and understand it.” He said they expect Wal-Mart to open by the end of January, Canadian Tire should open by the end of this year with Rona to open next spring. PetSmart, Marks Work
Warehouse and Dollarama are all scheduled to open by the end of the year. “Some of the tenants that we are bringing in you will not find them in other areas, so you will have people coming from other places in the Lower Mainland to shop here. This will be a first-class shopping experience.” Property Development Group chairman and founding partner Lawrence Rank said once both Tsawwassen Commons and Tsawwassen Mills open, they will offer a diverse shopping experience for the people of Ladner and Tsawwassen. “No one will have to leave the community anymore — everything will be here,” said Rank. “Our strength is service-related and food-related, where the main focus of the Mills is fashion-related, so they will both very much complement each other. That was planned right from the beginning.”

New water park for Memorial to be done by next summer A new water play area will be built at Memorial Park thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Ladner Rotary Club. Delta council gave the go ahead this week for $300,000 in municipal funds to be directed to a cost-sharing project with the service club that will see the replacement of the water play area in 2017. The club has raised 50 per cent of the estimated $537,000 for the water play area. Rotarians first approached Delta in 2013 about replacing the existing Kinsmen Water Park and then met with members of the Kinsmen
Club and Reach Child and Youth Development Society, which has a facility under construction at Memorial Park, to review a concept design. Those groups expressed support. A letter to council last week by Irene Forcier, chair of the Rotary’s water park project, confirmed the group raised its required amount for the community cost-sharing program. The current water park was built by the Kinsmen almost 30 years ago. A Delta staff report notes the current water park is nearing the end of its life span and should be upgraded to meet best practices for water usage and safety as well as the needs of the community.
The new park will be wheelchair accessible and have separate play areas designed for different age groups. The surface will be upgraded from concrete to one made out of recycled tires and the amount of water used will be reduced. The club is also planning on working in historical components that will honour Ladner’s farming community and acknowledge the Kinsmen for building the original water park. The civic report noted the most advantageous timeline would be to begin design work this fall and initiate construction in the spring of 2017 to ensure the park is available by summer.

It’s helpful to get from Point A to Point B quickly, but drive misses out on sights along the way
Living Matters
BARBARA GUNN
Every summer vacation has its essentials. Cameras. Sunglasses. Flip-flops. Maps. I had the first three items — but unfortunately, not the fourth. We were in a rented car. We were in unfamiliar territory. We were trying to make our way from Point A to Point B. “I wonder if we’re on the right highway,” said the husband, who was at the wheel. “I wonder if I should take this turnoff or wait for the next one. I wonder if we should be going east or west.” “West, I think,” I said. I really had no idea. “Do we have a map?” I asked.
“No,” said the husband. The son pulled out his cell phone. “Of course we have a map,” he said. “In fact, we have unlimited maps.” The son, let’s just say, is more tech savvy than his mother. He tapped something or other, and typed in something or other, and then someone or other — a woman — began to speak to us. “Keep right,” she said. “In 500 metres, take exit 183 toward Johnson Road.” “Who the heck is that?” I asked. The husband changed to the right-hand lane. “After exiting,” the mystery woman said, “stay on Johnson Road for two kilometres. Then turn left on Main Street.” The husband did as he was told, and went this way and that way, and this way again. The mystery woman took us on what I imagined was the most direct route to Point B, but it happened not to be the prettiest. “This neighbourhood looks a tad sketchy,” I observed. “There are noth-
ing but massage and tattoo parlours.” Would it be possible, I asked the son, to ask Miss Chatty Travel Guide to direct us to Point B via, oh, some lovely waterfront or some cool shops? Could we have her up her game a bit and see if she might point out some famous landmarks or historical points of interest? “That’s not how it works,” said the son. “Well,” I said. “At the very least, could you get your friend to take us to an Italian deli? Or maybe some ’50s-style diner where they serve shakes with whipped cream and sprinkles?” “Nope,” said the son. “And she’s not my friend. Never met her.” Turns out the sharp little mystery woman — whoever she was and wherever she was — was also not able to show me where I might get a yellow sun hat or a souvenir coffee mug or some extra-effective bug spray. Weird, this techno roadmap gal. For someone who’s clearly very smart, she’s really rather dumb.

ou don’t have to break the bank to have a good time around here during the summertime. In fact, you don’t even have to go to the bank. In addition to the beaches, parks and pools that provide seasonal fun at no or nominal cost, I continue to be amazed by the abundance of local events that can make the same offer. Last weekend, the Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation once again put on the hugely popular Boundary Bay Airshow, which included threeand-a-half hours of aerial demonstrations. And what did it cost to watch all of this take place at the Boundary Bay Airport? Absolutely nothing. This weekend it’s the Tsawwassen Sun Festival’s turn to provide the entertainment, most of which will be free of charge. The 44th annual fair will feature stage entertainment, parade, car show, midway and even a drive-in movie on Sunday night. With Ladner Pioneer May Days, Ladner Bandfest, Canada Day festivities, Tour de Delta, South Delta Jazz Festival, Grand Prix of Art Delta and more already in the books for 2016, you’d think we’d be near the end of festival season, but there’s still a lot more to enjoy. And did I mention it’s all free? The wildly popular Ladner Village Market, which attracts shoppers from all over the Lower Mainland, still has three more dates left in its 20th anniversary season: Aug. 14 and 28 and Sept. 11. Sunday’s drive-in won’t be the only opportunity to catch a flick under the stars this summer as a pair of outdoor movie nights are on the calendar for August. The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen’s Starlight Spectacular will screen The Jungle Book at Diefenbaker Park on Saturday, Aug. 13, while the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall’s block party will feature Disney’s Inside Out on Saturday, Aug. 27. In between those two weekends, on Sunday, Aug. 21, the 12th annual Quilt Walk and Car Show will attract thousands to Ladner Village to peruse the classic cars and handmade quilts. That same day, the Delta Community Animal Shelter hosts its annual Animal Expo at Memorial Park, while the Day at the Farm on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Westham Island Herb Farm rounds out another jam-packed festival season in South Delta.
Life in peaceful South Delta touched by global tragedy
I
t feels like the world is in crisis, and just a little off kilter. I’ve had it with watching panicked victims running through the streets fearful for their lives after people have been shot, run down or bombed. There seems to be no end to the weekly reports of tragedies and it’s getting to me. Historians tell us war and violence have been a part of society since the beginning of time and today is no different. That’s small comfort as I watch escalating conflicts about race, religion and politics playing out around the world in brutal, unfathomable ways. On July 14 I was making a declaration at the Point Roberts Canada Customs office when I glanced up at the silent TV behind the counter and saw video footage of a truck plowing through a crowd of people. I teared up as I saw families enjoying a summer fireworks display mowed down by a five-tonne truck. Nice hit me hard after witnessing months of tragedies, too many to number. My border services officer was pregnant and glowing. She had seen the footage too and she pondered the world her child was entering and what the

future might hold. We didn’t have answers, just worries. She says she’s stopped watching the news and chooses not to participate in social media. I wished her luck, relieved to be crossing back into Canada. I drove past children playing at Diefenbaker Park’s Rotary WaterWorks and took in the view of the fertile Southlands with beautiful Boundary Bay in the background glistening in the sun. All that terror felt thousands of miles away, but strangely close. A stop at Shoppers Drug Mart and a senior is asking a black man where he comes from. “Senegal,” he replies and they chat some more. The grocery store is busy and life continues as normal in our beautiful little South
Delta community, a snapshot of Canadian society. Thankfully we trust our police, we don’t worry our government will be overthrown by military and we believe the colour of your skin or your sexuality shouldn’t dictate how you are treated by others. We welcome outsiders, we acknowledge our social problems and strive to do better. For those of us who choose to be awake to what is going on in the wider world, these are hard times. It’s exhausting to keep watching and empathizing with the pain families are feeling at the loss of their loved ones, police officers that won’t return home at night or families shattered by children they have lost. I refuse to look away and I believe I am not alone in my sadness and frustration. We are all mothers, fathers, sisters or brothers, we understand when our fellow humans bleed, and we bleed with them. I left the mall and headed to my mother’s house. I needed to give her a hug and maybe she needed one too. Costly and ineffective Canada Line is far from the success suggested
Editor: Re: Bridging the rapid transit gap, Community Comment, July 20 The piece by ML Burke has more holes than Swiss cheese. The claim that the Canada Line is an “unprecedented success” is sheer nonsense. The Canada Line’s station platforms are a mere 40 metres long and can handle only two-car trains and effectively has half the capacity of the rest of the light-metro system, which has station platforms 80 metres long and can handle four- and six-car trains of Mk.1 & 2 stock. For added insult, the Canada Line is not compatible in operation with the proprietary ALRT/ART
light metro system. The Canada Line is the only heavy rail metro in the world built as a light metro and has less capacity than a simple tram costing a fraction to build. The Canada Line has been effectively at capacity during peak hours because all South Delta and Surrey buses, as well as all Richmond buses, are forced to transfer their passengers onto the Canada Line if they wish to go to Vancouver. Internationally, the Canada Line is seen as a bit of a joke, especially when its operating costs are about three times more than comparable light rail operations. Rail transit is not part
of the proposed George Massey Tunnel bridge replacement and if rails are not laid when the bridge is built, they never will, as engineering a bridge for rail traffic is quite different than for cars. The current Liberal government only builds regional rail projects for photo-ops at election time (note: the Evergreen Line’s opening has been delayed to just before next year’s election) and the massive costs for extending the Canada Line across the South Arm of the Fraser, including the virtual rebuilding of the original line to increase capacity, would amount to well over $5 billion.
There are efficient and affordable ways to provide rail transit, but I’m afraid the B.C. Liberals are blind, deaf and mute to such proposals. Under the B.C. Liberal leadership, the Metro Vancouver region has passed the point of no return with public transit solutions and the future is bleak with rubber and asphalt solutions, including new bridges and highways to pretend they are improving gridlock and pollution, while the opposite, increased congestion and pollution, happens. The proposed multibillion-dollar bridge, without rail, is a harbinger of things to come. D. Malcolm Johnston

Commuter calls for urgency when it comes to building bridge to replace outdated tunnel
Editor: As a regular user of the outdated George Massey Tunnel for many years, one who has been in all the lineups and delays and seen the frustration, I want to express the need for urgency to build the bridge as soon as possible. It is well known the tunnel is already the worst traffic bottleneck in the province. How will we survive another five years until a bridge is built? The Highway 99 cor-
ridor with traffic from the U.S. and ferry terminal is often in gridlock at the tunnel. These volumes will increase as more people live south of the Fraser River and need to commute north for work or school. I really feel for the people going south every morning trying to merge into one lane. Many commercial trucks, commuters and people trying to get to a ferry on time are backed up about two kilometres
and barely moving. Also, the frustration of many drivers can be seen as they often use the bus lane heading south in the afternoon when the lineups in the other lanes are too long. With a new bridge, let’s call it Eagle View Bridge, not only do we get 10 lanes which allows for future volume increases, we also get numerous improvements in the on-ramps and interchanges as well as better designed HOV
lanes. The federal government has supported large infrastructure projects across Canada and this new bridge should qualify for some funding. It would be great if B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone could accelerate the schedule and start building the bridge tomorrow. Maybe there is a way to fast track the project and reduce the construction time to three years. Keith Munro
We’re far too fortunate to do all that complaining
Editor: Twice a week I read the Optimist, including the letters to the editor, and notice that so many of the letters are complaints about one thing or another. Yes, I have been guilty of doing the same thing, but as I age, I realize there are so many good things in life that I am doing my best to put the negative behind me. I have a wonderful family and sons that I am
extremely proud of, and a husband who has been my rock for 36 years. How lucky I am! Each day as I pass through the McDonald’s drive-thru to pick up my tea, I am greeted with a big smile and a friendly hello. What a way to start my day. A little means so much. I arrive at the North 40 to walk my dog and I’m greeted by other friendly dog walkers whom I
always have a short chat with and some kind words. After dropping my pup at home and heading out for my daily errands, I’m met with smiles and small chat. Again, a little means so much. I have even gone as far to start an Instagram account and post a picture of something that makes me happy every day. While there are so many things happening in the world that are unhappy and sad,
and I realize there are things in life that aren’t fun, it’s good to surround yourself with positive people and positive thoughts, because when you look inside yourself we all have many things to be truly grateful for. So when you pass that person on the street, or chat with family and friends, give them a smile and think about how truly lucky we are. Tina Doughty

I had injuries and physical activity was part of the recovery process. These days, working out keeps me fit for other sports and activity in my life. What do you like best about the activity? Fellowship and convenience. How does it benefit your life? It keeps me healthy and active. What are some other activities you do to keep active? I participate in a walking group 2 days/week, and I sail and kayak. Rest and relaxation are important to injury recovery, but as Paul discovered, research shows that low-intensity exercise is also important to recovery following minor injuries or common surgeries. Maintaining an exercise program after injury can help you return to your everyday activities more quickly, while also fostering a healthier, more active lifestyle for you to continue (just like Paul has continued with his fitness routine 20 years later!). Before beginning an exercise program after injury or surgery, it’s important to consult your doctor. At Delta recreation centres, Parks, Recreation & Culture staff are here to help you be healthy and active! We can help you build a routine, choose a class, and provide fitness tips. Delta police target impaired boaters
Drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40 per cent of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways. To raise awareness and reduce alcohol-related deaths, the Canadian Safe Boating Council and the Delta Police Department
are launching year four of Operation Dry Water, an initiative to discourage this dangerous practice. With the summer boating season in high gear, the B.C. Day long weekend is the perfect time to remind boaters about the risks of drinking and boat-

Federal statutes dictate that, whether or not your craft is motorized, you can be charged with impaired operation of a vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if your blood alcohol level exceeds the .08 threshold. This means you can be charged even if you are impaired while operating a canoe and a judge is able to, upon conviction, suspend your boating privileges. You can also face fines of not less than $1,000 or imprisonment up to five years, not to mention the expense of a court case and the impact of a criminal record. Operation Dry Water is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities on the water while fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use while boating.

Tsawwassen Sun Festival
Fun in the sun throughout long weekend 44th annual summertime celebration features parade, park activities and even a drive-in movie
The 44th annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival rolls into town with plenty of activities and attractions throughout this B.C. Day long weekend. “We have lots going on,” says festival coordinator Elaine Campbell. A Drive-In Movie Night is a new addition to this year’s fair and takes place at Beach Grove Elementary on Sunday. The sci-fi classic Back to the Future will be shown. The classic car show is back for a third year Monday and will be “bigger and better,” says Campbell. Monday’s Rotary parade, a favourite part of Sun Fest, starts at 11 a.m. and heads south on 56th Street from 16th Avenue to Winskill Park. “The Tsawwassen Sun Festival would not be complete without the Rotary parade,” the event’s website states. It also encourages spectators to “cheer on the floats, businesses, community

Slo-pitch and volleyball tournaments are also part of Sun Fest. Anyone interested in playing volleyball can sign up through the Sun Fest website, notes Campbell. “If they just want to come out and play, we can put them on a team.” Food options at the festival include poutine, pizza, grilled cheese, wraps and more. The beer garden runs all three days and features music courtesy of a DJ. An antique fair takes place Sunday and Monday at the South Delta Recreation Centre. The Sun Festival runs from July 30 to Aug. 1. Most of the fun takes place at Winskill Park. There is no parking available at Winskill on Monday except handicap parking. There will be parking available at South Delta Secondary with a shuttle service. Visit the event’s website www.sunfestival.ca for additional information.

Antiques return to SDRC for two-day show
The 38th annual antique fair at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival is back again this year. The two-day fair takes place Sunday and Monday at the South Delta Recreation Centre. “We had a really good show last year and I think we’re going to top it this year,” says coordinator Malcolm Johnston, adding it’s the longest running antique show in the province. Approximately 70 vendors will be in attendance, selling everything from toys and jewelry to ceramics. “Since this show only happens once a year, a lot of dealers make a special effort to bring out their best bits,” he explains. Admission costs $5. It costs $3 (on Monday) if entrants bring a coupon found in the Optimist. The fair runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. • Over at Winskill Park festival-goers can peruse a range of items at the marketplace. Vendors will have fashion items, jewelry and more on display Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A home and garden show, where businesses will showcase their products and services, will also be part of the marketplace.

George Ellenton to receive Mentor of the Arts Award Dance educator to be honoured posthumously
This year’s Mentor of the Arts Award will posthumously go to longtime dance educator George Ellenton. The former Delta Academy of Dance director began performing his own Frank Sinatra tribute show about a decade ago. He passed away earlier this year. “Hundreds of students acquired the skills and a love for the arts through George’s mentorship and commitment to the form,” said Dave McIlroy, who is scheduled to present the award to Ellenton’s wife Mary at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival. “He had a remarkable breadth of friends in musical theatre, dance and live music,” said McIlroy. He added that Ellenton performed at the last SunFest Music Festival, bringing his Frankly Yours Sinatra tribute to the Tsawwassen Arts Centre along with a tuxedo-clad big band. “They were a stand out for certain.” Ellenton had previously told the Optimist that Sinatra’s Christmas Waltz was the first song from the legendary singer he was conscious of listening to and that he saw his mom and dad dancing to it in the kitchen when he was just a kid.

George Ellenton often performed a Frank Sinatra tribute show. “Sinatra’s sort of always been a part of my life,” he said in a 2013 interview. “I’ve always loved the music and his style and his voice.” The presentation is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the main stage in Winskill
Park. The award, created in 2009 and handed out during the Tsawwassen Sun Festival, recognizes a community member representing a specific discipline of the arts for their contribution and leadership.

having difficulty with reading, writing or math. The goal of the program is to help children become more competent and able learners. A child does not have to be diagnosed as having a learning disability to attend the program. To make it affordable to all families, some partial subsidies are available courtesy of the CKNW Orphan’s Fund for families in financial need. Spaces are still available for the Aug. 2 to 26 program. Students will attend twice per week on either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus one Friday session. Each tutoring lesson is 90 minutes. The Learning Disabilities Association also offers an afterschool tutoring program from October to December and again from February to May. Pioneers split weekend set Ladner takes Game 1 on the road but Nanaimo returns favour in second tilt IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Home floor advantage has been a disadvantage — at least in the first two games of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association semi-final series between the Ladner Pioneers and the Nanaimo Timbermen. Ladner opened the best-of-five series with a 10-7 win at the Nanaimo Ice Centre on Friday night only to see Nanaimo return the favour with an 11-6 victory in game two Sunday evening at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Friday’s series opener was a tight affair throughout. Ladner opened the scoring four minutes into the game as Ryan Keith scored the first of his three goals on the night. Nanaimo responded with a late goal only to see Ladner take a 2-1 lead with a mere three seconds to go in the opening frame. Each team scored three goals in the second period, but the Pioneers took control in the third, outscoring Nanaimo 5-3. Sam Clare had two goals and two assists to pace Ladner’s attack while brother Nate added four assists. Colton Dow scored twice and added an assist for a three-point night. Rob Cook was solid in net, making 31 saves. After a close opening period, which saw Nanaimo lead 4-2 in game two of the series Sunday night, the defending provincial champs from

Travis St. Germain watches his shot during Sunday night’s game against the Nanaimo Timbermen at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Vancouver Island took control in the second, outscoring the home team 6-1 and badly outshooting them 22-8. Mike Berekoff was one of the lone bright spots for Ladner with two goals and two assists, Nate Clare
had a pair of goals and one assist while Dow added three helpers. Cook and Nathan Wilson split duties in net for Ladner as Nanaimo outshot the Pioneers 54-38. Game three in the series
was played Tuesday night in Nanaimo. A result was not available at press time. Game four is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta. If a decisive game five is
needed, it will be played on Wednesday, Aug. 3 in Nanaimo. Langley holds a 2-0 lead over North Shore in the other best-of-five semifinal series. Game three was played Tuesday night in Langley.
Islanders take 2-1 series lead on Salmonbellies IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The Delta Islanders scored early and often in a dominating 16-8 win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies Saturday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre to take a 2-1 lead in its best-of-seven B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League semi-final series. Game four was played last night (past deadline) in New West with a piv-
otal game five tonight in Ladner. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Delta came out flying in game three as Chase Fraser scored two minutes in. The Islanders kept up the offensive pressure and went up 2-0 with 9:52 to play in the period as Fraser scored his second of the night. Jon Phillips scored 33 seconds later and then Evan Messenger and Ryan Lewis scored 26
seconds apart to put the home side up 5-0. New West finally got on the board late in the period, but they couldn’t get anything going against a stout Islanders’ defence which held the ‘Bellies to only nine shots in the period. New West re-grouped in the second, capitalizing on some Islanders’ penalties to cut the lead to 6-5, but the Islanders restored order scoring two goals
seven seconds apart and scored three short-handed goals in the period to take an 11-5 lead after 40 minutes. The third period saw both teams exchange goals — and trips to the penalty box — as the referees called 11 penalties between the two teams in a rough final frame, which also featured a fight between Delta’s Mitch Winter and New West’s Mitchell Macaulay.
Aidan Milburn led the way for the Islanders with a hat trick and three assists. Phillips also had a six-point night with two goals and four assists; Fraser had a hat trick, while Cam Milligan had a goal and four assists. Spencer Bromley and Nick Jensen both scored once and each added three helpers. Kevin Orleman made 33 saves in net to pick up his second win in the series.

Coastal Selects pull off stellar two-year run
A two-year run on the soccer pitch doesn’t get much better than what the Delta Coastal Selects have pulled off. The regional U16 boys rep team repeated as Provincial “A” Cup champion with a 2-1 win over Surrey FC in the gold medal game. The feat comes after Delta won the Coastal Cup title back in May with a 3-0 triumph against Langley. The feats duplicated what the team did at the U15 level a year ago. Delta Coastal also went
unbeaten in Metro League regular season play with a 14-0-5 record. The run to provincial glory actually got off to a slow start when Delta was surprised 3-1 by North Vancouver in its opening game. The boys fought their way back into gold medal contention with a 5-0 drubbing of Surrey and a 1-0 victory over Saanich FC. Surrey earned its way to the final with a 2-1 win against North Vancouver. The Coastal Selects feature talent from South Delta, North Delta and
Coastal FC soccer clubs. The boys will head to England for a summer tour and to compete in the Nottingham Cup. The roster includes: Markus Ference, Jackson Turner, Edgard Gutierrez, Zachary Cicek, Maxwell Thiele, Kevin Khandal, Eric Aujia, Shubh Malhotra, Markus Niebuhr, Jackson Thomson, Kelvin Sandhu, Aiden Miller, Josh Banipal, Riley Miller, Greg Moore, Rowan Childs and Trey Ference. The coaches are Joe Cicek and Rob Thomson.

Red Sox win gold in Kelowna
Ladner Red Sox U11A first-year Mosquito AllStar baseball team had a tremendous weekend in Kelowna as it captured its division at the 15th annual Valley of Champions Tournament. The bats quickly went to work in the opening game as Ladner rolled to an 11-3 win over Chilliwack. Later that day, it was a much closer affair in a 3-2 victory over Abbotsford. Early Saturday morning, the Red Sox battled Victoria to a 5-5 tie, then came out hitting again
in an 8-1 romp of Prince George. Ladner secured first place in round-robin play, setting the stage for a rematch with Victoria in the championship game. It was an intense final with strong pitching and lots of emotion shown from the boys who stayed ahead the whole game and claimed gold with a 7-5 win. “The boys showed excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and focus throughout the tournament,” said Red Sox coach
Sean McDonald. “With the parents’ encouragement, dedication and support, the players couldn’t have had a better weekend,” he said. The team includes: Oliver Melnychuck, Aksel Van Tol, Matthew Cushing, Cameron Arnold, Macin MacDonald, Ben Lakeland, Lukas Oldham, Nash Johnson, Nathan Kirkbride, Ryley Ferguson, Riley Hamilton and Taylor Pearce. The coaching staff also features Andrew Ferguson and Mike Canaday.

WILKINS, Shirley Shirley was born in Vancouver in August of 1927 to Annie and Fred Lundstrum and passed away July 21st, 2016 at the Delta Hospice. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 2008 as well as her brother Ray and two sisters Vivian and Bev. She is survived by her sister Sheila; her 4 children, Steve (Dawn), Jeff (Marilyn), Susan and Lisa (Allan Volts). She was so proud of her six grandchildren, Grant (Laura), Tim (Jacqueline), Greg (Tara), Michael Volts (Tina), Courtney Vala (JC) and Dani Rose Coates as well as her nine great grandchildren, Jake and Sloan, Ava, Brooks and Autumn, Ty and Amy and, Jayce and Tenley. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as her dear friends. Shirley moved to Ladner in 1954 and lived in the house on 54A Street for 50 years where her children were raised and often remarked that “Ladner was a great place to raise kids.” A private celebration is being planned. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Delta Hospice in her memory. A special thanks to Dr. Nicholson for his continued care and to Dr. Sylvia Henderson for being there for her in the end.
