Farmers survey the potato varieties on display at Reynelda Farms as they try to determine which ones have market potential.

Potatoes put to the test

Farmers inspect new varieties during annual field trial at Reynelda Farms SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

There were plenty of potatoes but few, if any, will make the cut. Farmers from Delta and throughout B.C., as well as retailers and agricultural industry representatives, were at Reynelda Farms on Westham Island last Wednesday for the annual B.C Potato and Vegetable Growers Association potato variety field trial event. They came to see and judge many new varieties from across North America as well as other parts of the world. Having such names as Alaska Bloom, Agita, Elmo, Texas Norkotah, Allians, Montreal Mozart and Jelly, the spuds of various shapes, sizes and colours had been grown in a section of the farm. There were also spuds that only had identification numbers, potatoes developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and various breeding programs. The field trial is aimed at introducing new varities farmers might be inter-

ested in growing, potatoes that have future market potential. However, cautious farmers carefully examined a variety of factors, including yield and appearance, to determine whether the public would be interested in buying them. Heather Meberge with ES Crop Consultant Ltd., the firm that planted the spuds, talked to growers and sellers like BC Fresh Vegetables to see what types of new potatoes they’d like to see in the marketplace. She said many times factors such as appearance override taste. As far as the new potatoes that were developed in breeding programs, those are varieties not yet grown elsewhere, so farmers can bid on them for exclusivity. “A farmer can say they want the rights to a variety, then it wouldn’t be this year but next year they could get that variety and have exclusive rights from Ag Canada, and there would be royalties paid,” she said. “The varieties here aren’t available for bidding just yet.”

Among the farmers checking out the varieties was the Gilmore family from Pemberton. Noting growing conditions in Delta are not as dry as those on his farm, Chad Gilmore said choosing a new variety can be risky because it might take some time from getting the plants to having enough crop to produce reasonable yields, which could cost thousands of dollars, only to find out the spuds tend to lose their colour, don’t store properly or don’t have any consumer appeal. He said the business can be “a tough racket” sometimes. The field trials have been held at several Delta farms over the past decade. Support for the 2016 trial came from the Clusters Initiative of the Growing Canadian AgriInnovations Program in partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian Horticulture Council and the B.C. Potato and Vegetable Growers Association. The B.C. potato industry

Delta goes to court to close marijuana shop Ruling shuts dispensary on Scott Road, but it re-opens days later under a different name PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

A B.C. Supreme Court ruling closed the WeeMedical Dispensary Society on Scott Road, but it’s since re-opened as the WeeCare Med Society. Another court date is set for next month.

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The B.C. Supreme Court has ordered a medical marijuana dispensary in North Delta shut down. In a ruling earlier this month, and posted on the court’s website last Thursday, Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick ruled WeeMedical Dispensary Society didn’t have a business licence and contravened Delta’s zoning bylaw. Since a permanent statutory injunction preventing the dispensary from operating was put in effect earlier this month, the store obeyed the order, shut down, but then reopened a few days later under a different name. The store now operates under the name WeeCare Med Society, which has now filed a statement of defence and will have its case go before the court next month. The operation opened in April in the 9500-block of Scott Road and had applied for a business licence, but was refused. WeeMedical, which operates dispensaries in several locations in the province, was taken to court after an order to cease operations was refused. Society director May Joan Liu had claimed the dispensary is a non-profit society and is not required to obtain a business licence. A bylaw inspector regularly visited the site to issue tickets as long as the business continued to operate. The fines were initially $200 a day, however, amendments to Delta’s business licence bylaw approved in late May increased the fines to $1,000 a day. The fines amounted to close to $12,000, an amount the operator indicated they will appeal. Liu appeared before Delta council earlier this summer, urging civic politicians to approve the business licence for the WeeMedical Dispensary Society. “Since the federal government has already announced that they are decriminalizing the use of marijuana and will be setting regulations in spring of 2017, allowing

WeeMedical to continue operating will be considered a progressive step forward in the direction of the future and not backwards where the only way to access medical marijuana for most people is in the streets where they put themselves in danger in some cases,” Liu stated in a letter to Delta. However, in her reasons for judgement, Fitzpatrick stated, “It is well known that the federal government has indicated that it intends to take a different approach in terms of marijuana generally, if not medical marijuana. I have no idea where the federal government is in that process. It appears that it is moving in that direction, but when it might get to that point is anyone’s guess. Further, it is as yet unknown what any new legal regime will look like. It may be, at the end of the day, that operations such as this will not be offside the criminal law. However, as a judge of this court, I can only address the situation now in terms of what the current law is, not what it might be in the future.” The justice added that Delta “is within its rights based on the current law to take the position that WeeMedical is operating an illegal business.” The dispensary was slapped with a permanent statutory injunction that restrains it from operating. Two years ago, Delta passed a bylaw amendment prohibiting the production, storage, research or sale of medical marijuana anywhere in the municipality. The bylaw initially applied to all zones, including agricultural, although applications to grow the product would be considered on a case-by-case basis. The idea was to keep any potential operations within industrial zones. Two applications to set up grow operations in those areas would go on to receive approval, but one has since been abandoned. The provincial government, meanwhile, struck down part of the bylaw that prohibited the production of medical pot of farmland. So far, there have been no applications.

A colleague is about to take some holiday time. She would stay put, she told me. She would do a little kayaking. She’d clean out her garage. This does not sound like much fun to me: the garage part. I told her as much. “Don’t clean out your garage,” I said. “That doesn’t sound like a vacation.” The colleague sighed. “I have no choice,” she said. “I haven’t cleaned it out in months.” This is never a problem in our house, and not because the garage is fitted with shelves and baskets and hooks to keep everything in place. LEAP into working world

Business group employs youth to help beautify Tsawwassen If you’ve noticed some small changes to a few of the businesses around Tsawwassen, you’re not imagining things. Youth from the Delta Community Living Society’s Leading Employment and Achieving Possibilities (LEAP) program have been working with the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association this summer to “beautify” local businesses. LEAP is a partnership with the Delta School District to assist youth to make the transition from the school system into the adult world. Three LEAP youth, aged 18 and 19, have been working on little projects at various locations around the Tsawwassen business core this summer. For at least two of them, this is their first job. For Cassidy, who won’t be returning to school this fall, this is her second job. “I think the great thing about this for Cassidy is maybe she’s had a job but now she’s actually trying out different skillsets that she never thought she would really enjoy and she’s realized how much gardening is something she enjoys,” says Rochelle Ali, employment services counsellor for the Delta Community Living Society. Ali says another youth, Nikki, has never been employed, so she’s learning basic skills like dressing appropriately, being on time, making sure she has enough water for the day when working out-

doors, and other adult responsibilities. The third youth, Jason, enjoys the “manly work” of his first job, like lifting heavy rocks and working with the dirt. All three are paid by the Tsawwassen BIA at least minimum wage or better for their work, with the opportunity for wage increases for returning workers next season. The partnership began after Ali was invited to speak at the Tsawwassen BIA’s March AGM about the difficulty of finding employment for developmentally disabled youth who graduate out of the Delta School District. The BIA allocated funds for wages and then invested $500 for equipment to provide the youth with materials to beautify participating businesses. “The best thing about this whole thing is with these guys having their first jobs, learning all these skills, they’re also becoming a part of this community,” explains Ali. “People are coming up to them and thanking them for what they’re doing.” They’re people like Cyrus Mazdine, assistant branch manager at Envision Financial, whose credit union at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall received a gardenbox makeover at the front entrance. Mazdine says the project was affordable at $58 and done in a timely manner while using local labour and materials. “It’s really helping peo-

ple get experience and get out there and be social and it’s exactly what’s needed.” Jay Park, owner of D & G Recycling (also known simply as the bottle depot), paid $340 in materials to have his garden replanted and fresh paint applied. Park says due to the age of the building it made

sense to spruce the place up and although he was originally just planning on a paint job, he was pleased when the LEAP team came along with a better proposal. The BIA will report back on the success of the program at its next AGM and plans to hire up to five members of LEAP next summer.

here do we draw the line? We reported last week that Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer and its executive medical director have warned municipal officials about the health risks posed to individuals and the community as a whole if a casino were to open here. There’s no doubt that gaming facilities and problem gamblers go hand-inhand, so adding a casino south of the Fraser River would create issues that don’t exist today, which leads to the moral question: Are the monetary gains worth the trade-off? The safe answer is no, they’re not, that projects that create social ills are better left on the drawing board. In that regard it’s difficult to argue in favour of an entity that could cause any kind of harm, but the casino debate has got me wondering where government oversight ends and personal responsibility begins? Alcohol is definitely a social ill, yet we allow liquor stores and bars to operate. There are all sorts of people addicted to shopping, but that doesn’t mean we close the shops. There are many other examples where everyday activities are abused to the point they become a concern, but where do we draw the line and how much of a duty does the government have to protect us from ourselves? Obviously regulations are necessary and support is required for those that can’t help themselves, but at some point the onus falls on the individual. In a column late last month, I wondered whether something should be done on the rural stretch of Ladner Trunk Road given the volume of traffic it carries and the fatal crashes that have occurred. A letter writer rightfully pointed out that it’s not the road’s fault, but rather it’s the drivers who are speeding or distracted. I totally agree, which is why I had earlier stated it’s difficult to lay blame on the road, but I continue to wonder if actions can be taken to essentially protect drivers from themselves. I guess it’s the same when it comes to casinos: How much do we try to safeguard things so nothing goes off the rails? The provincial government already has exclusion policies and treatment services in place, so short of shutting the doors, I’m not sure there’s a whole lot more that can be done.

Many seniors can’t find type of housing needed in Delta

T

he Delta Seniors Planning Team recently completed a 55+ Housing Survey for the Corporation of Delta. Close to 500 folks responded to questions on affordable, appropriate and available housing now and in their future. Delta’s three communities told us affordability was their top concern. A report from the corporation’s planning department noted that housing affordability, especially in the rental market, was a challenge due to high land prices and developers not particularly interested in building rental or seniors housing. Wait a minute. Why not? So I asked a couple of developers about this. The response I got could fill five columns. But it was mostly about the onerous bureaucracy of municipalities’ planning departments, boards of variance and time barriers to the permitting process. Recipe for a housing crisis: 1. Land development is a business, which requires profit. Developers are not social workers, but some are partnering with non-profits on providing subsidized housing. 2. Housing or shelter is a basic need. No argument here. Everyone deserves “basic” shelter, no matter how humble that might be. A car is not too small when you are homeless. All three levels of government need to work together on a strategy.

Community Comment ML BURKE

3. Government is not a business and should be doing what’s best for its people. People before profit and spending our tax dollars where there is the most need. 4. Gaining approval for change is a hard sell and too often renders governments impotent. This is where “we” come in. “We” are our own worst enemy and continue to belly ache about increased density, more traffic, pollution, parking and so on. You may not want to hear this, but increased density is our only option if we want to keep living here. Otherwise, it will just be a playground for the ultra-wealthy. Look at New York, London, Paris, Toronto and San Francisco. Vancouver has arrived, plus we’ve thrown in a mild year-round climate as a bonus. Vancouver has been outed and the world is coming. Sorry for my rant, but we really do need to change our thinking. Back to the survey results.

Forty-three per cent of Deltans 55+ said the housing they need is not available. The greatest need is in South Delta for owned and/or rented one-bedroom apartments, plus affordable rental rates. The top three future housing choices are a condo/apartment, one-story home or a gated 55+ community. The most important amenities are health services, walkability, and proximity to shops and transit. Two-thirds are concerned about their finances lasting. Two of the Delta Seniors Planning Team’s six recommendations are: 1. Plan new developments with the “village” concept in mind: Housing that is affordable for all demographics, that encourages socializing, walkability, cycling, shops, access to transit and community events. (Anyone remember the Paterson Park vision?) 2. Encourage innovative land use by considering exceptions or amendments to zoning and bylaws that are barriers to creating affordable housing such as modular homes, lane housing, co-ops and cohousing. If you would like a PDF copy of the full housing report, contact ml_burke@telus.net. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Review needed for B.C.’s broken health system

Editor: We are about to be assailed with politicians’ promises as the next provincial election is imminent. You may already have had a phone call from someone who has asked your views on a number of issues. As usual, it soon

Forget about attracting tourists and put focus on looking after the wishes of local shoppers

Editor: Re: Forget about the book, it’s the cover that requires attention, Community Comment, Aug. 24 Brad Sherwin, marketing guy, instead of pining after the car loads of tourists who pass by on Highway 17, Tsawwassen businesses should cater to us local yokels. Why? Well, frankly, Tsawwassen is no tourist attraction, but we locals

So, how could you show us some respect? Well, beautify the entire commercial core with trees, not just the entrance at 56th and Highway 17. Many of the very few trees that we have in mall parking lots are dying. Quite a few trees along 56th Street, particularly near 12th Avenue, lack care and will probably die. Many businesses along 56th Street have no trees. Ugly.

are here and we do buy stuff. Any wallets found south of Highway 17 belonging to strangers have been lost while their owners, lost tourists, have frantically figured out how to get back to the way to somewhere else like Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, Whistler, Banff... That’s right: Tsawwassen is no tourist trap. Tsawwassen is us, your neighbours, as plane Jane as we are.

We aren’t fair-weather tourists hell-bent for somewhere else, we’re your neighbours — so shade those sidewalks and parking lots with trees, and, when it snows, get rid of the ice and shovel away the snow, or we’ll continue to spend our money like tourists somewhere else, like Richmond or Vancouver, or at the new malls on the Tsawwassen First Nation. Greg J. Edwards

Paterson Park would be perfect spot for a casino Editor: Re: Casino poses health risk to community, Aug. 26 Delta’s Paterson Park has a long history of gaming with the racetrack as its last use. The benefits of a casino to Delta might be greater than the problems. Delta owns the land and the zoning. Delta can receive revenue from the lease of

the land and from gaming. The Tsawwassen First Nation is Delta’s primary competition for the profits available. When built on TFN farmland, all the negatives and problems with gaming will be in our backyard with no control or profits. A casino would provide revenue to reduce property taxes in Delta. A casino on TFN farmland

would not provide revenue to Delta. The impact from a casino will be the same to Delta if at Paterson Park or on TFN farmland. At Paterson Park, Delta gets a return. With a lease of the land, the land and improvements are returned to Delta at the end of the lease. Delta gets a second chance for change at that time.

A secure lease with gaming revenues benefits Delta. The TFN alternative is no lease, no revenue and all the arguments against casinos impacting Delta. Paterson Park revenues can be used to mitigate the negatives associated with casinos. It is going to be built, but will we in Delta benefit? Larry Meyer

become yet another ball to be kicked around between politicians of all stripes. We spend so much more time discussing $3.5 billion for a 10-lane bridge, a 15 per cent tax on property purchases by non-residents and the grasping nature of the Vancouver Fraser Port

Authority, etc. Government fails when it does not respond to really major problems. Dissatisfaction with the political process is endemic in western democracy at present. This has led to unrest and potential anarchy. Peter Duffey

Thief could have had clippings Editor: I live across from the Beach Grove Cafe and have been growing lovely, colourful and unusual succulents/cacti in my street side containers. On Aug. 20, between 6:30 and 10 a.m., someone stole not just one plant but emptied the whole container. Every year someone removes plants from the containers, and each time this occurs, I am furious. Passersby and neighbours

have been enjoying the various plantings and have made positive comments. The thief, he or she, should have a nice succulent garden by now, if it’s the same person. There will be no more plantings, just containers filled with rocks. And a security camera will be installed. A note to the thief: you could have had free cuttings. Felice Andersen

Reason for new bridge gets lost Editor: It seems that lost in the fog of confusion regarding the George Massey Tunnel and the possible/probable bridge is the original reason for considering a replacement crossing of

the Fraser River. Perhaps one of the selfappointed experts will explain that point to those of us who sit by and wonder if there is any sanity in all of this gobble-gook. S.M. Cruickshank

A great ‘Spot’ to look at the water Editor: Re: Seating is missing to appreciate the great vistas Ladner offers, letter to the editor, Aug. 24 If Edward Houghland continues a short walk

along Chisholm Street (west from Sharkey’s) he will come to Spot on the Water, a small park with benches and tables and a great view of the water. Vera Gilder

Decade of support from golfers at Chesapeake Tourney has raised $12,000 for Delta Hospital

Chesapeake Landing residents held their 10th annual golf tournament earlier this month, raising $1,900 for Delta Hospital. Forty golfers and 56 dinner attendees took part in the event on Sunday, Aug. 7 at Cove Links. Held since 2007, the tournament has now raised almost $12,000 for the hospital. This year’s tournament was organized by golf committee members Terry and Ev Pickering and Tony and Maureen Archbold. “We are proud to be able to support Delta Hospital. It is an important part of our community of Delta,” says Terry Pickering. “At some point we might all need the medical care the hospital provides and if we can do

our part, we can help the hospital keep moving in the right direction; offering more and more in the way of health care services to Delta.” The tournament received support from many local businesses, including Beach Grove Golf Club, Cove Links Golf Club, Pacific Clean Air, Acorn Plumbing and Heating, McKim Mechanical, Jarry’s Market, Tsawwassen Collision, Julie Laird, Richlea Bakery, Splashdown Park, Hastings Park Racecourse, Vancouver Canucks and Golden Eagle Golf Club. “We are lucky to receive such amazing support from this community, and the folks of Chesapeake Landing are such a great

example of this,” says Veronica Carroll, executive director of the Delta Hospital Foundation. “Year after year, the golfers, and especially the tournament organizers, are willing to dedicate their time and energy to support Delta Hospital because they truly understand its value in Delta.” The Chesapeake Landing tournament is one of many communityled special events that have raised thousands to enhance patient care at Delta Hospital. What’s next for BCJALL champs? Coaching situation, roster holes and star player status among hot topics

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

After a breakthrough season, that culminated in a B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship and a Minto Cup berth, what’s next for the Delta Islanders? The Optimist talked to assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie about what lies ahead for himself and the team. Here are some of the the hot topics looking ahead:

Contending for league title again

It was 15 years in the making before Delta captured its first-ever league championship. It not only took a talented veteran group but a handful of big moves to get the job done, including acquiring two players from Ontario and four more from within the league at the roster deadline. The Islanders lose a whopping 16 players to graduation and most certainly will take a step back in 2017. Look for up-andcoming teams Langley and Victoria to be the biggest threats to Minto Cup champion Coquitlam. Delta will have at least six returnees and will rely on incoming talent from junior ‘B,’ intermediate and even midget to fill the substantial holes in the roster. The club could still be in a solid playoff position, especially if junior hockey doesn’t get in the way of such players as Ryan Jones and Tavin Grant. However, many of the club’s moves will be addressing the future and building towards another run back to the Minto Cup, perhaps when it returns to B.C. in four years. “(This organization) still has a lot of talent that is very young,” said Rennie. “Obviously, you have to rebuild after something like this. We traded away a lot of things and it’s time to restock the cupboard a bit. But we also have to make sure this team stays competitive.”

Delta Islanders salute their fans following their final game at the Minto Cup last week. The B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champions are losing 16 players to graduation.

2017 head coach

Rennie is definitely easing his lacrosse workload moving forward. Just how much so will be decided over the next few weeks. He won’t be coaching field this fall for the first time in 21 years, opting to spend more time with his family. He will return to the Islanders in at least a managing capacity but is hoping to hand the coaching reigns over to Kyle Goundrey. Ultimately, meetings with team president Darcy Phillips and the club executive, along with Goundrey, will determine what is next. “I haven’t completely ruled it out but right now I’m thinking I’m done. “We have a progression plan and we need to make sure it’s still in place. Expect an announcement in a month or so.” Goundrey, who enjoyed an outstanding playing career in the NLL and WLA, teamed up with Ross Frehlick to guide the Intermediate “A” Islanders

the past two seasons.

Tre Leclaire

A Minto Cup berth and the team’s first-ever league title kept what could have been a significant distraction in the background. The 18-yearold standout opted not to rejoin the Islanders back in July following his stint with Team Canada at the U19 World Field Lacrosse Championships where he earned first team all-star honours. Instead, the league’s 2015 rookie-of-the-year decided to focus on his upcoming freshman season at Ohio State University. Rennie can only wonder what might have been had the high scoring right-hander been in the line-up for the one goal loss to Orangeville or even against Calgary. “It was a hard one for us to swallow,” he admitted. “We really could have used him (in the Minto Cup). But he felt he had to go to school and didn’t want to miss 10 days of it.

We understand that and are okay with his decision.” Leclaire still has threeyears of junior eligibility remaining and would be the centre piece of the team moving forward, but there is speculation he might just focus only on the field version of the game. Describing him as the “best 1998 player in the country” Rennie says only time will tell where this is headed. “Right now we really don’t have an approach. I will probably talk to Tre again at Christmas and see where he is at. We want to keep the program strong and keeping Tre Leclaire is doing that. That is our No. 1 goal.”

The class of 2021

Delta Lacrosse celebrated its first-ever provincial championship at the Midget A1 level this summer thanks to a terrific group of 2000-born players who have done nothing but win in box and field throughout their careers.

The next step for this talented class is Intermediate, however, often high-end players will skip this level entirely and jump right to junior. That is the case in Ontario where there is no Intermediate League. So what do the Islanders plan to do? Logan Schuss, Jon Phillips and Evan Messenger are some of the homegrown standouts who got an early jump on their junior careers. “Teams like Six Nations and Orangeville are fiveyear junior programs,” said Rennie. “Aging up won’t be a problem and we probably have three or four guys who will be junior ready.” It’s a certainty the club will also age up 1999-born Brody Harris who was named the intermediate “A” league’s top goalie this past season. Ryland Hood and Matt Keith are graduating, while playoff standout Kevin Orleman is returning to Ontario for his final season of eligibility.

find its groove in the round robin matches. Beating Alberta in the tourney opener 9-8, they lost their next match to Nova Scotia 8-7, on goal in the dying seconds. They were on the verge of dropping another game to First Nations when Yingling netted the equalizer with just three seconds remaining. B.C. closed out preliminary play with a loss to eventual gold medal winner and unbeaten Ontario. Nova Scotia and B.C. finished tied in the round-robin standings but the head-to-head tiebreaker gave Nova Scotia the nod and B.C. was out of gold medal contention. The boys rebounded from that disappoint-

ment with a 9-3 win over Alberta to advance to the bronze medal game and earn another shot at Nova Scotia. B.C. redeemed the earlier loss with a convincing 8-3 win and the Delta contingent had a large say in the outcome. Yingling notched a hat trick, while Moloci and Cantlon also scored. The local players also made their presence felt at the defensive end of the floor. Unfortunately, Stalling was unable to play after fracturing his arm at the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford. He still made the trip out east and provided his support from the bench.

SOROKA, Alex Age 90, of Tsawwassen, BC, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 26, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born in Lampman, Saskatchewan to Peter Soroka and Polly Konachowicz in 1926. Alex grew up on the family farm in Lampman, Sask and was the first in his hometown to attend university - a graduate from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering (Mechanical). Alex enjoyed a successful career spanning four decades plus with Air Canada and Canadian Airlines - in addition to being heavily involved in municipal, provincial and federal politics. He served on the city councils of St. James, Winnipeg and Beaconsfield, QC and was instrumental in many areas of improvements including the construction of their recreational centres. Also in Tsawwassen, BC, Alex put forth to council the proposal for the extensive overhaul of the Winskill Aquatic facility that is enjoyed today. Alex’s accomplishment in the formation, development and function of the Augustine House in Delta, BC gave him great joy. And still the while, Alex went home to Saskatchewan for Spring Seeding and Fall Harvest into the early 1990’s. Alex a very loving, kind, passionate and dedicated man found great joy in family, community and his Church. In 1954, in Montreal he met and married the love of his life, Leona Mitchell. Alex and Leona have had a celebrated journey together of 62 years. Alex is survived by his wife Leona, sister Olga Lafrentz, children Colleen (Zach Cattiny), Alexis, Cecilia (Roy Semlacher), Alex Jr., Alison and Anne-Marie (Rick Callow), seven grandchildren Jessica, Berlin, Kyle, Tosh, Catherine, Catrina and Jack, as well as by his endearing nephews, nieces and cousins. Alex is predeceased by his parents Peter and Polly and brother Morrell. Leona and her family extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Haven House for their love and care of Alex over these past years. Visitation and prayers will be held on Monday, September 5, 2016 at 6:30pm - 8:00 pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC. The Celebration of Alex’s Life and Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016 at 11:00 am, Sacred Heart Parish, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow. Then the Interment at Boundary Bay Cemetery, Tsawwassen, BC. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, www.alzheimer.ca in Alex’s memory would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. “We have been blessed to have had Alex in our lives; a loving, passionate, kind, thoughtful and charismatic man.” Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
