Third fatal collision on stretch of Ladner Trunk Road this year IAN JACQUES

Firefighters and first responders from around the Lower Mainland are mourning the sudden loss of one of their own following a fatal accident in Delta Sunday morning. Delta police responded to the accident just before 9 a.m. in the 10400-block of Ladner Trunk Road. “It is believed that the Jeep was travelling eastbound on Ladner Trunk Road and went off the roadway to the right, striking a stationary semi-truck and trailer that was parked off the roadway,” said Delta police public affairs coordinator Sharlene

Brooks. The driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. Police have yet to release the man’s name, but confirmed yesterday morning he was from the South Delta area. The Surrey Firefighters Association posted a message Sunday on Facebook saying that 44-year-old Ryan Hammerer was killed in the accident while on his way to work. “It is with deepest sadness and regret that we announce the tragic passing of fire fighter Ryan Hammerer,” said the Facebook post. Transition house in limbo Local effort has civic and federal support, but requires provincial funding SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A working group led by the Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta is trying to establish a local transition house for women and their children experiencing violence and seeking safety, but the province isn’t providing operating dollars. The working group has secured a house from the Corporation of Delta as well as $122,000 in funding for renovations for the North Delta home from the federal government. However, a request for $500,000 in annual operational funding from B.C. Housing has gone nowhere, which means the project could be lost because the federal funding, contingent on the operational dollars, will soon expire. Saying they could also soon lose the house, which would have been operated by Chimo Community Services, Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta vice-president Kathleen Jamieson said they had been negotiating for months with B.C. Housing before being abruptly told money wasn’t available. “We’d really like to hear from (Housing Minister) Rich Coleman and have him change his mind. Nobody else can do it,” she said. Delta is the largest community in the province without a transition house and not having one locally will undoubtedly result in women wanting to get out of difficult situations remain in them, said

The Haven Transition House in Nanaimo provides temporary shelter and support for women and their children who have experienced violence and are seeking safety while exploring their options. Jamieson. According to B.C. Housing, approximately 18,000 women and children stayed at transition houses and safe homes in B.C. last year. Transition houses provide emotional support, crisis intervention, safety planning as well as a safe, temporary shelter for stays of typically 30 days. The facilities also provide access to housing, financial, medical and legal assistance. As to why there’s no money available from the province, Coleman, in an audio statement to the media, explained B.C. Housing’s operating dollars are already committed as it’s in the middle of its fiscal year. He said the agency would be happy to discuss the proposal next fiscal

year. In a subsequent written statement, the ministry stated it would be pleased to discuss a partnership. “We’re just trying to do something good for the community and something that’s badly needed,” said Jamieson. “We just want to keep the door open to the ministry as much as we can and if we don’t get it we’ll lose everything we’ve worked for.” Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said there’s a real need for the project and the province needs to bring funds before the end of the month when federal funding expires. Delta has no facility of this kind and government’s position that women and children fleeing violence can wait until the next fiscal cycle is simply unacceptable, she said.

“This project has nearly everything it needs to be a success. It has a dedicated facility in Delta, commitments from federal and municipal governments, and an impressive group of volunteers and organizations ready to operate a home for women and children at risk. Support from the province is the only piece missing. It is my sincere hope that Minister Coleman, and B.C. Housing, will step forward with operating funds that will ensure the community of Delta is provided with this critical service,” said Huntington. “The transition house in Richmond is full and turns away as many as 100 women and children a month. The government has the money, so what are we waiting for? This is a clear failure to recognize

a critical opportunity for a community in need,” she added. In an open letter to Coleman and Premier Christy Clark, New Democrat health critic Judy Darcy and housing critic David Eby called on the government to provide funding. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord said domestic violence is a priority in Delta and having any additional capacity, whether it be in Delta, Surrey or Langley, would be beneficial as there’s a shortage of space. He added women fleeing abusive situations in Delta usually go to an excellent facility in Richmond, but often “the inn is full” there, meaning women will sometimes have to stay in places like the YWCA or even be put up in a hotel room.

Missing man off to Richmond CONTINUED from Page 1 He indicated to family he was going to Richmond for an appointment, but has not been seen or heard from since. Police issued a call for help in locating Hall last Friday. “Delta police have been utilizing traditional methods and resources (including deploying Air 1) in an attempt to locate Mr. Hall, however these efforts have

not been successful in locating him,” said A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “Mr. Hall has disabilities that are causing Delta police concern for his well-being so we are reaching out to the public for assistance to locate him,” Swallow said. Hall is a Caucasian male, 6’5”, thin build, brown hair and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing a brown suede

jacket and black pants. “Mr. Hall is legally blind and suffers from other physical disabilities (longterm foot injuries) that affect the manner in which he walks. He may also be somewhat depressed (although not clinically diagnosed),” added Swallow. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts or sees Hall is asked to call Delta police at 604-946-4411.

Officers honoured for meritorious service

Two from Delta Police Department receive medals during ceremony at Government House IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Two Delta police officers were recognized for their bravery, commitment and service with Meritorious Service medals at a ceremony at Government House in Victoria last Thursday night. S/Sgt. Guy Leeson, a 21-year member of the force, and Sgt. Sean Chodat, a 16-year veteran, were honoured alongside fellow officers from across the province. Leeson was off-duty on Oct. 21, 2015 when he witnessed a collision and rendered assistance to a motorcyclist who sustained a devastating injury to his left leg, which was

bleeding profusely. Leeson enlisted the assistance of citizens and improvised as there was no first aid equipment or other emergency personnel on scene. Using his own belt as a tourniquet to slow the arterial bleed, his actions were critical to saving the man’s life, according to hospital medical staff. “S/Sgt. Guy Leeson acted with bravery and excellence during an extremely difficult situation,” said police Chief Neil Dubord. “Had that tourniquet not been used or not held, it was made clear from the medical staff that the motorcyclist would have died from his injuries. His exceptional skills and judgement in this situ-

ation saved a man’s life. S/ Sgt. Leeson demonstrated his dedication to his community as an off-duty first responder.” For the past 11 years Chodat has played a critical role in the enhancement and continuous development of the B.C. Municipal Undercover Program, both from an administrative and operational perspective. He has been the coordinator in more than 22 significant cases. Undercover operations are generally initiated for homicide and high-level drug trafficking investigations, but his involvement in Operation Angel, which resulted in the charge and conviction of the accused in the fatal collision that took

the life of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, is the only undercover operation in North America for an impaired driving causing death investigation. “Sgt. Sean Chodat has been an integral leader of the BCMUP for several years, demonstrating exceptional skills, innovation and initiative,” said Dubord. “Sean’s work has been key in bringing justice to homicide investigations that would have otherwise gone unsolved. “These officers along with the others recognized at this ceremony are most deserving. Police officers across this province and country do exemplary work for the citizens in their respective communities. All of us can have

Police agencies join forces to catch fleeing driver IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A joint effort from several policing agencies combined to get a dangerous driver off the road early Saturday morning. According to Delta police, an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop with the driver of a black Nissan Sentra in the 11700-block of River Road. “While the officer attempted to deploy a spike belt, the driver

swerved toward the officer’s car, narrowly missing him before fleeing the area,” said Delta police public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. Police called on Air-1 for assistance and several minutes later the vehicle was spotted driving erratically at 140th Street and 88th Avenue in Surrey. Brooks said Surrey RCMP attempted to stop the vehicle in the 7200block of King George Boulevard, but the driver

took off again. Air-1 continued to observe the vehicle from overhead and saw the driver flee on foot. A K-9 unit tracked the driver to a field near Old Yale school. The 30-year-old male was held in police custody for a show cause hearing. The recommended charges include two counts of flight from police, assault of a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while prohibited.

Police seek witnesses to fatal crash IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Delta police are still seeking witnesses as the investigation into a Nov. 4 fatal pedestrian accident in Tsawwassen continues. Police were called to the intersection of 16th Avenue and 56th Street just after 7 a.m. According to police, an elderly South Delta man was crossing 56th Street from east to west in the crosswalk when he was

struck by an SUV making a left turn from 16th Avenue to 56th Street northbound. The man was rushed to hospital with severe injuries, and died later that day. Out of respect to the man’s family, police have not released his name. “We do know that there were several vehicles in the area at the time of the collision, but, as of yet, not many witnesses have come forward,” said Delta police public affairs coor-

dinator Sharlene Brooks. “No matter how trivial or how little witnesses might think the information they have, it could mean the difference in completing our investigation.” Brooks said the driver of the SVU has fully cooperated with police. Because the investigation is still active, no charges have been laid. Anyone with information is urged to contact Const. Derek Gallamore at 604-946-4411.

Long-term plan to upgrade Delta’s dikes With 61 kilometres worth of dikes, municipality has big job ahead as it deals with sea level rise SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta is undertaking another geotechnical and seismic stability study of the dike system. A contract worth more than $86,000 was awarded to a firm to do an analysis of the dike in a number of locations, including River Road, Westham Island, Boundary Bay and Brunswick Point. The geotechnical and seismic displacement analysis is to determine how Delta’s dikes compare to new seismic guidelines developed by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “We have a longer term plan to upgrade the dikes throughout the municipality,” civic engineering director Steven Lan recently told Delta council. “We have 61 kilometres worth of dikes. It’s going to be a long-term project for us, and so we are in the process of gathering this additional information so we can upgrade them to the standard that’s

Delta’s current dike system is constructed to a socalled 200-year flood level, which means the risk of flooding is estimated to be 0.5 per cent in a given year. In a presentation to council earlier this year, Hugh Fraser, Delta’s deputy director of engineering, noted that a study by the province estimated it could cost $1.9 billion to undertake a complete dike

upgrade throughout Delta. Since sea level rise will be a gradual process, he said planning needs to start now. Having adopted guidelines that require new homes to be built 4.5 metres above sea level, Delta has already taken a number of measures, as well as taken part in a number of flood studies, while senior government

funding has come in for a few upgrade projects. Delta’s dikes are currently between 3.4 and 4.2 metres, but there are areas with private dikes at lower elevations. It’s estimated dikes need to be raised by at least 1.2 metres to meet 2100 projected sea levels. The Fraser Basin Council is lobbying for senior government funding.

inder Morgan has gone on record saying Roberts Bank isn’t an alternative terminus for its Trans Mountain pipeline, but that hasn’t quieted the speculation and suggestions that are out there. Former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt was the latest to wade into the fray, recommending last week that instead of expanding things in Burnaby, the pipeline could be re-routed to Roberts Bank or even south of the border. I can appreciate the worries that surround a $5.4-billion proposal that would nearly triple the capacity of the oil pipeline to 890,000 barrels a day, but it’s more than a little disconcerting that somehow this area should be a landing spot for a project because it’s too dangerous or too unwelcome to go elsewhere. Granted, Roberts Bank doesn’t necessarily have the marine traffic of Vancouver’s inner harbour, and the population as a whole isn’t as large out here, but when you’re talking pipelines and oil tankers, your greatest worry tends to be the environment, and we’ve got that in spades. The Fraser River estuary is internationally significant when it comes to bird and marine life as well as the habitat that supports all those species, so if the overriding concern is what a spill or accident would mean to the environment, I would suggest it would be every bit as catastrophic, if not more so, in these parts than around the existing facility in Burnaby. There’s no good place for an oil spill, so it’s difficult to pit one area against another, but given we’re home to the busiest ferry terminal in the province and the largest container port on the West Coast of Canada, to say nothing of a large-scale coal port as well as a proposal to double container capacity, it’s pretty clear we’re already doing our fair share when it comes to the movement of goods and people on the water. That comes with the location, to be sure, but there’s a definite worry that as more populated areas (read Vancouver, Burnaby, perhaps the North Shore) envision fewer industrial uses for their waterfronts, Delta will become an increasingly popular target to relocate such activities. It’s one thing to do our part (or even more) for the greater good, but it’s quite another to allow others to turn us into an industrial armpit.

I

was invited by the Delta Liberal Elders to present the Seniors 55+ Housing Survey results to a nonpartisan town hall meeting in Ladner earlier this month. Two things came out of that meeting that I believe deserve more exposure. One is about the South Delta Seniors Bus and the other is about grants for people needing financial help to fix their homes or pay their rent. The event was well attended and included many of our politicians from all levels of government. Someone asked if the South Delta Seniors Bus would take seniors to the new mall. Sylvia Bishop said no because it is in a different jurisdiction (outside of Delta). A few days later I asked for clarification. Answer: They won’t look at changing their current policy or their route to local shops unless the Tsawwassen First Nation wishes to help financially support the bus. This seems not only petty, but downright mean-spirited. Why would they deny a few seniors access to this mall when the bus passes right by, including to the ferry terminal. The North Delta Seniors Bus will go into Surrey for hospital appointments. tle depression and social isolation in these dark days of winter. If you agree, please write to our mayor and council. As to financial assistance for homeowners, landlords and renters, there are a few programs administered through BC Housing you should know about. Details can be found online at bchousing.org. Go to the “Housing Options” page or phone 604-433-2218. HAFI (Home Adaptations for Independence) offers up to $40,000 in forgivable loans (grants) to homeowners and landlords for needed renovations that would allow you, or your tenants, to stay in your home. The loan is forgiven if you remain in the home for three years. To qualify, your annual household income limit must be below $38,500 (single), $42,500 (couple), $52,000 (three to four people),

$64,500 (five to six people) or $68,500 (seven to eight people). Your household assets must be less than $100,000. Don’t include: RRSPs, RESPs, RDSPs, RRIFs, vehicles and the home that you live in. Do include: your cash or bank balance, stocks, bonds, term deposits, mutual funds, business equity, other land, real estate or property holdings. Your HAFI application must be approved before starting work. SAFER (Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters) will top up your rent payment to a maximum of $750 a month if you qualify. You must be paying more than 30 per cent of your income in rent and have lived in B.C. for at least a year, be 60 or older, a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, permanent resident or refugee applicant. Your gross monthly income is less than $2,550 for singles, $2,750 for couples or $1,776 if sharing. There are also rental subsidies available for low to mid-income working families. If you, or someone you know, needs assistance filling out an application form, you can make an appointment with Delta’s seniors’ coordinator, Eva BusichVeloso, at 604-787-1242. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Port tries to boost unpopular image with propaganda

Editor: “Vancouver, my port city.” What does this ad mean? Are we supposed to feel warm and fuzzy about the slogan or the fact these high-priced ads are being paid for by the taxpayers of Canada? Of course, the port claims that no funds come from the taxpayer but we all know the money it uses should really be returned to the federal government for the benefit of the taxpayer. I think the Port of Vancouver spends too

much money on political spin and propaganda to help minimize its unpopular status. The port’s unpopular status is well deserved as it continues to manage the West Coast federal port business as an unelected (appointed) group of insiders as a board of directors that appointed its own management group to promote its own agenda. I am not sure what you call it, but I believe it’s called cronyism. Don’t get me wrong, I

do support free enterprise and the important import/ export business of the nation, but do have a lot of trouble with the empire building and unnecessary destruction of the Fraser River and the Fraser River estuary by this unelected and unaccountable group. The ad also focuses on graphic video of the Fraser River and the inference the Port of Vancouver is somehow a good caretaker of the environment. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth as

Excellent care provided at hospice

Editor: As a resident, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone involved in supporting the Irene Thomas Hospice. The excellent quality of care is provided by knowledgeable, professional staff, in a quiet, respectful manner. Staff and volunteers are proud of their workplace, and everyone works as a team. The facility is purpose built, clean and immacu-

lately maintained. The outdoor courtyard offers a quiet green space. Individual rooms have doors leading to an outside patio, offering natural light and fresh air. You are welcomed by a home-like environment and the smell of home cooking. Excellent meals are personalized and cookies, tea and coffee are always available for family and residents. On behalf of myself and family, I want to thank the

Malls shouldn’t have opened without pedestrian overpass

Editor: Anyone going to the new malls should have noticed how dangerous the pedestrian crossing is for the bus stop on Highway 17. I can’t believe the developer, the municipality and the provincial government think that the bus stop is a safe place for people. There should be concrete barriers protecting people waiting there. Also, there absolutely needs to be an overpass. I drive down there a lot and on rainy,

dark nights and it’s hard to see people. When someone finally gets killed or injured in that area trying to access a bus, as far as I’m concerned, the municipality and developer are completely responsible and I’ll add, criminally. They all know the danger there and nothing is being done. A permit to open should never have been given to the mall until that was addressed. Richard J. Bergeron

much of the port’s project development work has an ongoing adverse effect on the Fraser River and the estuary. Has anyone noticed we have a very large salt water dead zone between Deltaport and the ferry terminal? Has anyone noticed the stress on our salmon, shellfish, sturgeon fisheries, southern resident killer whales and the ongoing reduction in migratory bird populations over the past two decades? Now the port wants to

build another island in the middle of the Fraser River estuary for no apparent reason. This project, called T2, will have even greater negative impacts on Roberts Bank fish and wildlife, including migrating bird populations. It will also result in a huge loss in some of the best agricultural land in B.C. Give yourself a reality check before you get feeling warm and fuzzy from the port’s new TV propaganda ads. Try to remember it’s your river, your

estuary, your money and your quality of life they are messing with. Please write your member of Parliament and demand they bring some accountability back to our federal government in light of what the Liberals promised us during the last election campaign. Does anyone remember something about a reduced carbon footprint and action to address climate change and global warming? Don Paulsen

What about a ferry during bridge construction?

Editor: As I never ever relish the thought of having to drive through the George Massey Tunnel to Richmond from home here in Tsawwassen (parents and friends live in Richmond), I am holding out some hope that

during these five awkward years of bridge and road construction, some government official (or entrepreneur) has already thought to laying on some sort of ferry service (a bit larger than the tiny ones serving False Creek) just for foot passengers and

cyclists. The ferry could run from the foot of Ferry Road in Ladner to the shore of Lulu Island. I’d be only too happy to pay, say, $4 to cross. Too much to hope for? Just sayin’. Bill Hamilton

Holiday season brings out the best in movies

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

So far this year, I have seen Elf, Home Alone and White Christmas. Make that, I’ve seen Elf three times. And Home Alone twice. And there’s still more than a month until Santa comes. This year, I started watching early. One of my Christmas faves — and truly, all of them are — first aired weeks ago, when I was still gorging on Halloween suckers. “Look what’s on tonight!” I hollered. “Elf! Elf is so funny! I loved Elf!” “Really?” said the husband, who was about to dispose of the pumpkins. “Already?”

First responders given new fentanyl resource Justice Institute of B.C. launches website IAN JACQUES

With overdoses and fatalities stemming from fentanyl use reaching epidemic proportions, the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) recently launched a fentanyl website for first responders. JIBC hosted two workshops for first responders SUBMITTED PHOTO

on fentanyl earlier this year. The sessions were so well received organizers decided an online educational resource was needed to provide essential information about fentanyl to as many first responders as possible. The website (https://fentanylsafety. com) is the result. “First responders are currently adapting to the danger that fentanyl presents to their personal safety,” said Steve Schnitzer, director of the JIBC Police Academy. “The first step is improving our knowledge of the drug itself, and learning best practices in a variety of situations, such as handling drugs during a seizure or while responding to an overdose. The JIBC Fentanyl Safety website is one of several options for first responders to use as an online resource, to educate and protect themselves and their communities.” Topics covered on the site include: what fentanyl is and why it is so dangerous for first responders; safe handling of suspected fentanyl; what is Naloxone and how it can save lives in cases of opioid overdoses; and job-specific information for law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel, and paramedics to help them stay safe when encountering fentanyl in the community. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord said he is very supportive of the new resource tool. “We have been sharing this information with all our first responders who are on the front lines and making sure they are fully engaged with it to use it as a tool to combat these fentanyl problems,” said Dubord. “I think it does several things: it increases the

awareness and keeps it top of mind for us. The last thing you want is to see any kind of delay in being able to deal with these issues. It really does continue to equip our officers with tools that enable them to be safe and in turn keep other people safe.” Dubord said the fentanyl crisis continues to be an ongoing battle for law enforcement and first responders alike. “The battle still needs to be fought. We are still seeing overdose issues and we have to continue to keep hammering this message home of the dangers of illegal drug use,” Dubord said. “For us, it’s around education, enforcement and equipping our officers with the tools to respond. This new JIBC website helps us do all of those things.” While designed with first responders in mind, the website is accessible to the public to help bolster awareness of the dangers of the highly toxic narcotic. The site was developed by JIBC with funding from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. • Fraser Health is reporting a successful Naloxone clinic held earlier this month in North Delta. It was the first of two planned open housestyle clinics with a second set for South Delta in the near future. Fraser Health medical health officer Dr. Arlene King said 26 people attended. “It went well. There were lots of great questions and thoughtful dialogue,” King said. She encouraged the public to keep an eye on the Fraser Health website at www.fraserhealth.ca for details on the South Delta clinic.

Hawaiian Beach 13th Annual

Tree festival kicks off festive season

T

he Christmas season kicks off with a holiday tradition in Ladner Village with the fourth annual Christmas Tree Festival. This fun, family event, presented by the Ladner Business Association, runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24 at the corner of 48th Avenue and Delta Street. This year’s event promises lots of fun for everyone

and is the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit and share in the joy of the season with the whole community. “The idea is to bring people together to celebrate,” said Jill McKnight, one of the event organizers. “The festival is about family traditions and bringing the community together to kick off the Christmas season.” Port Metro Vancouver is back this year as a presenting sponsor and will have a booth set up with information and children’s activities. Throughout the event area various tents will be set up offering something different. One of the highlights, said McKnight, is the gingerbread cookie decorating. Kids can come by and get cookies that are ready for decorating. There is

also a gingerbread house contest in which the public will choose the winner. “Various businesses have been working very hard to come up with some great looking gingerbread houses,” said McKnight. “This has become a highlight event and a bit of a fun rivalry between the businesses — but all in good spirit.” The winner of the contest will be chosen that night based on the highest number of votes from the public. Another contest is the children’s colouring contest for children 12 and under. There will be prizes for each age category as well as two grand prizes. There will also be a children’s craft station and a Christmas tattoo station. Letters to Santa can be dropped off in the special mailbox set up just for the festival and children can also pen their letters to Santa that night. All letters will be sent

directly to Santa at the North Pole. Featured entertainment on stage is the GoBy Catt Trio and there will be free hot chocolate courtesy of MLA Vicki Huntington and her staff, while hot dogs will be for sale all grilled up by the LBA merchants. The festival will end with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree at 7:15 p.m. with Santa’s arrival just minutes before. McKnight said the tree is a little smaller this year, but the idea is as your children grow, so will the tree. “This will be a cool thing when people come back year after year and see the tree grow and create some memories,” said McKnight. “With the Light up Ladner campaign going as well, the lights will help create an even more memorable atmosphere. We are all really excited to welcome the community to this year’s festival.”

Boundary Bay Park Association volunteers will welcome Santa Claus for his annual visit to Cammidge House in Boundary Bay next Sunday afternoon.

Santa to visit Cammidge House Santa is once again scheduled to make a stop at Cammidge House to visit the children of South Delta. He will make his annual trip to the century-old house in Boundary Bay Regional Park on Sunday, Dec. 4 between 1 and 3 p.m. Volunteers of the Boundary Bay Park

Association have decorated the house with all the festivity of the Christmas season. Cammidge House provides all the ambience of a good old fashioned Christmas when times were kinder and gentler. Each child will be given a goodie bag and will be able to participate in free draws. Refreshments are available.

Santa is happy to pose for photographs but parents are reminded to bring their own cameras to record the occasion. Frank Rogers, president of Boundary Bay Park Association, said it was several years ago that one of Santa’s elves contacted the group regarding the scheduling of a visit. “Now all of these years

later of an annual Santa stopover, parents who may have attended the year before comment on just how present the Christmas spirit is within the warm ambience of Cammidge House.” For more information about Santa’s visit, call 604-943-1303 or visit www. boundarybayparkassociation.wordpress.com.

Hospice group helps bereaved relax and heal

Are you searching for a group that will understand the painful grief you are feeling and will offer strategies to help promote healing and relaxation? A drop-in Bereavement Relaxation Group starts in January at Delta Hospice’s Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner. It will meet Tuesdays from 1 to 2:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 10. Often with the pain of the loss of a loved one, people experience anxiety, depression, restlessness, sleeplessness and other distressing symptoms. Experiencing and learning ways of managing how our mind, body and spirit react to loss can be helpful. Many find the connection with others who are going through a similar experience of loss is meaningful. The sessions begin with a check-in at which time

you may speak or simply listen. A topic related to grief and bereavement is briefly discussed and, once again, you can join in or just listen. After a short break, the music therapist and counsellor begin the guided-imagery and music portion of the session that lasts approximately 40 minutes. Participants choose to relax in chairs or on foam mats with pillows, light blankets and socks to make it a very comfortable, relaxing experience. The session ends with a check-out that often includes the lighting of a candle and a poem. Call Jean at 604-9480660 or email jean@deltahospice.org to register before your first visit. Wear comfortable clothing. The group will run until April 28.

Boots, books, baking and more at St. David’s Christmas Craft Fair ELIZABETH MURRAY

Congratulations to

TANNER ROBERTS

Optimist contributor

St. David’s Christmas Craft Fair kicks off at 10 a.m. this Saturday with a Keen Footwear sample sale that launches the fair’s theme: Boots, Books and Baking. The footwear sale is a semi-annual event at St David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. This yearend sale of Keen’s winter lines, combined with the parish sale of books and baking, bodes well for approaching cold weather. And there is much more on offer in addition to the three B’s. Parish youth are repurposing the historic screw-finish glass Mason jar that has preserved the fruits of the harvest for more than 150 years. Lesley Sutherland and her Creation Zone group are producing an assortment of Mason Jar Crafts, each containing a variety of imaginative items. The ever-practical Mason jars will also be filled with jams, jellies, pickles and relish. All manner of kitchen edibles, including a selection of frozen fruit pies, will be available.

So close yet so far for Pacers After dropping 5-set semi-final thriller Delta goes on to place 6th at Valley playoffs

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h - D e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Pacers were mere points away from playing for their first Fraser Valley championship in 16 years. By Saturday afternoon they had come away from the 12-team tournament in sixth place. Such is the fine line from being on or off the podium at the “AAA” level of B.C. high school boys volleyball this season. The Pacers’ run for the title ended with a dramatic five-set loss to league rival and eventual champion Semiahmoo on Thursday night in front of a near capacity crowd at DSS. The Totems stormed out to an early 2-0 lead and looked poised to make short work of the hosts in the best-of-five affair. However, Delta impressively bounced back to win the next two games and force a deciding set. Semiahmoo took control of the decisive game early and posted a 15-9 win. Instead of playing for the championship Saturday afternoon, the Pacers were relegated to the consolation bracket for a 10 a.m. date with Seaquam. A loss to their Delta rival sent them to the fifth place game where they closed out the tournament with another defeat, this time to Earl Marriott. Ironically, the Mariners had travelled a similar path, losing their semifinal tilt in four games to Walnut Grove. The Pacers had entered the Valleys the cotournament favourite. However, for the province’s fourth ranked team it was hardly going to be easy. After an impressive 3-0 win over Mission to lock up a provincial berth, the stage was set for another battle with the eighth ranked Totems — a team it had beaten in tournament and exhibition play but handed Delta its only loss in league play. “We knew who was on the other side of the court,” smiled Pacers head coach Carson Kauenhowen. “Unfortunately, when two of their guys go off like that it’s a tough team to beat but, at the same time, we made it really hard on ourselves. “We are a team that thrives on communication and emotion. It just wasn’t there for the first couple of games. We probably made between eight to 10 errors in both the first

Delta Pacers Keaton Mann goes up against a pair of Semiahmoo blockers during semi-final action at last week’s Fraser Valley “AAA” Championships. and second set. It took us to the point where we couldn’t back up any further and we had to start swinging. We answered the bell and it was great to see for a couple of sets but we put ourselves behind the 8-ball by giving away so many points in the first couple of games. Once you get into that fifth set situation it can go anybody’s way.” The Valley finish will undoubtedly hurt the Pacers seeding when the provincials get underway Nov. 30 at the Langley Events Centre, however, Kauenhowen is not concerned. He has seen his team have plenty of success against most of the top schools all season. “On any given day, the seeding really doesn’t matter,” he continued. “When it comes

to championships, you have to beat the best teams to win. It’s a tight race this year. All the teams are so close. If one point goes one way, the emotion can go the other. You have to come to play right off the bat.” Kauenhowen added the focus on practice over the next week will be on better positional play on defence. Too many breakdowns in the Semiahmoo match made it easy for its top hitters. “We got great athletes. They know how to hit the ball and play offence. We just got to bear down, play better defence and challenge other teams to make plays around that,” said the former Manitoba Bison. “We are not forcing teams into tough of situations as they should be.”

Sun Devils finish fourth at Junior Fraser Valleys If last week’s Fraser Valley Junior Girls Volleyball Championships is any indication, the South Delta Sun Devils are far from done as a dominant team at the senior level. The Sun Devils finished fourth at the Valley tournament — a feat that ranks second best in the Tsawwassen school’s 42-year history. Back in 2011, South Delta was second and went on to win the junior provincials with a team that was led by twin standouts Megan and Nicole McNamara — current sophomores at UCLA. What makes the accomplishment impressive is, unlike senior, there is no tiering at the junior level. The tournament featured the top teams in the Fraser Valley, regardless of enrolment size. The Sun Devils were earlier crowned Delta champions and are now busy preparing for the Provincial Junior Invitational Championships. Coached by Kevin McGregor and assistant

Caitlin Mannery, the roster features: Sarah Waterfall, Megan Hendrickson, Emma Boyes, Jemma Thomas, Hillary Nelson, Mikayla Hayes, Breanne Gallagher, and Olivia Wicket, Kallie O’Hearn, Macy Young and Mackenzie Thompson. The run to the semi-finals included a thrilling five-set victory over Langley Christian in the quarter-finals. A provincial spot was earlier clinched with a 3-0 win against Walnut Grove. Hayles was recognized for her outstanding play by being named to the tournament’s first all-star team. Meanwhile, it was also an impressive sixth place finish for the Delta Pacers at the Fraser Valley Junior Boys Championships. The Pacers’ Gavin Payne was named to a first team tournament all-star.

Tropics capture Cloverdale Midget tourney The South Delta Tropics continued their sizzling hot play with an impressive victory at the Cloverdale Midget Memorial Hockey Tournament. The Tropics were led by the goaltending duo of Ryan Vaughn-Jones and Noah Shumka. The netminders’ combined 0.86 goals against average proved to be more than enough as the team scored 26 goals over three days en route to a 6-0-1 record. The locals opened the weekend by defeating Port Coquitlam 3-1 in a hard fought game that saw quality scoring chances at both ends. The Tropics then pasted the Cloverdale Jets 5-0 and the Langley Bobbleheads 4-0 as both Vaughn-Jones and Shumka recorded shutouts. South Delta already had first place locked up in its pool when it battled the Cloverdale Canucks to a 2-2 draw, setting the stage for championship Sunday. The playoff round started against another Cloverdale squad but

That set-up a semi-final encounter with arguably the top two teams in the tournament as the Tropics took on the Cloverdale Cannons. South Delta jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds in as Marcus Beaulieu banged in a

rebound for his fourth goal of the tournament and silenced the raucous home crowd before they could even get in their seats. Kyle Ainge made it 2-0 in the second as he ripped a 22-footer top shelf. The Cannons continued to press and got two quick goals to tie the game at 2-2. The teams traded

chances in the third with both clubs pressing for the go ahead goal but solid defence and goaltending pushed the game to overtime. South Delta captain Jordan Payne took things into his own hands as he scored the winner with 57 seconds left in the extra frame, sending the Tropics

faithful into a frenzy and securing a spot in the final against the Richmond Rebels. After what seemed like the title game against the Cannons, the Tropics coasted to a 4-0 win against the Rebels to secure the tournament championship. The team received bal-

anced scoring throughout the tournament as to go along with Beaulieu, both Payne and Connor Chisholm also had four goals. Ainge and Mitchell Godlonton tallied three times while Gavin Payne, Riley Sherwin, Sam Tilsley and Carter Warn each had a pair. Both Riley Mitchell and Daniel Feldman were stalwarts on defence while chipping in with three assists each. Reid Rogers and Jordan Hawksworth have been standout twoway forwards all year as they continued their solid play and hit the score sheet with two points each. Liam Lester rounds out the roster but was unable to play the last five games with a concussion. The Tropics put their 14-game unbeaten streak on the line this Sunday as they travel to Langley to take on the Knights. Darren Chisholm, Jason Rogers and Dan Hawksworth round out the coaching staff with Carl Payne handling the managing duties.

BASTIEN, David Phillip April 12, 1942 - November 15, 2016 David was born at home in North Burnaby. A loving father of two sons, he shared his interest in mechanics with them, as well as his curiosity, creativity, and genius with numbers. He and his wife Lyla enjoyed almost 46 years of marriage. The family travelled extensively together and David - a talented photographer - took many stunning shots. He began his career as an aircraft mechanic (AME) with Canadian Pacific Airlines, eventually retiring nearly 45 years later as a maintenance planner with Air Canada. David loved his job, took pride in his team, made lasting friendships, and recalled that it rarely felt like work. In retirement he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity ReStore. David found an outlet for his artistic talents with the Richmond Carvers Society. He was an incredible grandfather who has inspired his grandchildren with his carvings, woodworking skills, drawings, volunteer work, and bottomless loving patience. David is predeceased by his son, “little” David. He is survived by many wonderful friends and family, in particular: his wife Lyla, son Gordon (Dana), beloved grandchildren Samuel and Sydney, brothers Brian (Fran) and John (Nazreen) Burns, and cousins - who were truly brothers - Norm and Bern MacLeod. A service will be held at Ladner United Church (4960 48th Ave, Delta) on December 3 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of David to the Delta Hospital Foundation or the Delta Hospice Society.
