First blast of winter hits Delta Police and engineering departments keep busy; more snow in the forecast later in the week IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Deltans woke up to the first blast of winter Monday morning that brought with it a mixture of snow, sleet and rain, causing treacherous driving conditions and numerous accidents.

And that could just be the start of it as more snow is in the forecast. Delta police public relations coordinator Sharlene Brooks said officers were kept busy responding to numerous accidents in both South Delta and North Delta.

Particularly tricky areas were Nordel Way, Highway 17 at Deltaport and the 7200-block of Highway 17. “We responded to nine collisions and seven of them were related directly to the weather, snowfall and slippery roads,” said Brooks, adding no injuries

were reported. Tickets were issued to some drivers for speed relative to conditions and there were warnings given to drivers as well, she said. In the afternoon, the patrol section shut down Highway 10 from the base of the hill west of Scott Road after several vehicles

got stuck. Brooks said there was also discussion of closing 72nd Avenue and Nordel Way, but that didn’t materialize. With more snow expected later in the week, Brooks is asking drivers to slow down. DELTA: see Page 3

Public to have say on Tim’s Delta council gives East Ladner proposal preliminary approval, sends to hearing SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A proposed Tim Hortons in East Ladner is a step closer to reality after more than two years in the planning stages. Delta council gave preliminary approval Monday to an application to build a restaurant on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street. It will now go to a public hearing. Southborough Investments Ltd. submitted the proposal in late 2014 but it had to go through several refinements after initially getting the cold shoulder at the civic advisory committee level. The application aims to rezone the site to allow construction of “a modest commercial building” with a 24-hour drive-thru, but indoor seating for just eight customers. The original proposal did not include seating. Several residents have expressed opposition, noting the potential for increased traffic, crime, litter and noise, as well as the potential for traffic safety issues. The owner provided a

After two years in the planning stages, the application has now been forwarded to a public hearing. traffic impact assessment that concludes vehicle queuing can be adequately accommodated. Mayor Lois Jackson expressed reservation, saying Delta should be moving away from allowing unnecessary car idling. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos was opposed, saying drivethru restaurants shouldn’t be allowed to back onto residential properties,

pointing out a back yard is right next door. Saying he wants to hear what people have to say, Coun. Ian Paton pointed out the existing gas station, car wash and nearby Harris Nurseryland are already next to residences without complaints, while Coun. Bruce McDonald noted a Tim Hortons at 64th Avenue and Scott Road in North Delta also

isn’t drawing complaints from the homes right next door. The engineering department noted a raised median island, several metres in length, would be required along the property’s frontage to prevent left turns. Traffic patterns would be studied during the first six months of business, if approved, to determine if signage and

pavement markers are required. Delta does not have a policy pertaining to drivethru services but many exist in the municipality, each application reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Council agreed to have staff come back with a report on what other municipalities are doing as far as policies and what Delta might consider.

Delta crews will be out 24/7 for the rest of the week CONTINUED from Page 1 The Corporation of Delta has put its winter road maintenance plans into full effect. By early Monday morning, five trucks were putting out salt, sand and a brine mixture and by mid-morning another four trucks were added. “Basically, it’s all hands on deck, 24/7 for the rest of the week. All of our trucks will be out around the clock,” said director of engineering Steve Lan. “We will monitor the weather and see what amount of snow is predicted and adjust from there. We just want to stay on top of this.” When it comes to clearing roads, Delta’s first priority is public transit routes, major collectors, select school access roadways and some roads in hilly areas. The second priority is secondary

The first snowfall of the season took a toll on the roads. through roads in residential areas and school bus routes, while third priority is minor residential streets and cul-de-sacs. “I know some folks are on a local road and would like to see us in the area, but we just can’t while we are going full bore like this because we have to keep the main roads clear and open,” Lan added. Not everyone is impressed with Delta’s road clearing response.

Rob Welsh emailed the Optimist saying he was horrified at the traffic lines heading up 72nd Street, 64th Street and Highway 10 Monday afternoon. “Many cars, granted, should not even be on the road without proper tires, but shame on Delta engineering at 3:30 in the afternoon at plus 2 Celsius that those roads were skating rinks,” Welsh said. Ladner resident Steve Munn, a regular com-

muter to Vancouver, said he’s questioning the decision to put in the counterflow at the George Massey Tunnel given the treacherous road conditions. “I called BC Highways and they told me there was a board that had a meeting at 6 a.m. and they deemed it was safe,” Munn told the Optimist. “I drove both ways on Monday through the tunnel because I didn’t make it to work because it was so bad and when I

turned around and came through the counterflow, I thought how can they deem this safe because all it takes is for someone to hit their brakes and they are sliding into oncoming traffic. With 22 accidents by 7 a.m. around the Lower Mainland, I’m just really shocked that no one thought this decision was a major safety risk.” As Monday was a professional development day, no school was in session, but the Delta School District has initiated its winter response procedures with more snow expected. According to the district, all schools will remain open if at all possible during winter weather. Any district-wide closure will be decided by 7 a.m. at the latest and will be announced through the media and the district and school websites.

Genesis gets facelift in DSS seismic upgrade

After more than a year of work, Genesis Theatre has re-opened to the public. The community theatre, operated by the Delta School District, has undergone an extensive renovation as part of the $17.6 million seismic upgrade at Delta Secondary. Geyer said there were three main components of the seismic upgrade — the theatre, the shops area and the central core of the school. “We had to do foundation work that connected all three. The theatre was certainly a significant part of the overall project,” he said. Geyer said construction crews had to blow out the first four or five rows of seats to get underneath to connect the piles. The renovated theatre features a new stage floor as well as new seating, paint and carpeting. The house lighting was upgraded and the lobby has polished concrete floors and countertops. “The seats were 50 years older than the building because they came out of the old Paramount Theatre in New Westminster,” said Geyer. “While the seismic program has some tight guidelines to what you can and can’t do, we think we have leveraged as much as we could to basically give that 30-year-old facility a bit of a facelift. People will notice a huge difference.” Located at 5005-45th

Ave. in Ladner, the 400-plus-seat Genesis Theatre has provided a venue for concerts, dance recitals, plays, lectures and large presentations. In recent years it has hosted performances by Jim Byrnes, Harry Manx, Valdy and a range of local dance troupes. Ray Weremczuk, district manager for Continuing Education and facilities rentals, said many community groups have expressed how excited they are the theatre has reopened. “December will be a big month and we already have lots of bookings well into 2017,” Weremczuk said. “I know groups had to find different spaces and that is a bit of a challenge here in South Delta, so I know some people were anxious in the months leading up to us re-opening. I think there certainly is enthusiasm that the theatre is now reopening and people are looking forward to seeing it first-hand.” The school district is planning a formal grand re-opening sometime in the spring.

Berms could become permanent in Bay Delta looking at variety of flood protection measures, incuding leaving temporary berms in place SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Sand berms installed in Boundary Bay on a temporary basis every fall could become permanent. That was the suggestion put forward by engineering director Steven Lan during Delta council’s recent discussion on flood protection measures in Boundary Bay and Beach Grove. Temporary flood protection works at select locations have been carried out there since the 1970s, including constructing a berm fronting a number of private properties in the 200-block of Centennial Parkway where no seawall exists. This year, the sand berm was also extended north to the 300-block of Centennial Parkway due to flooding in March of this year. Beach access points are also secured with concrete blocks and/or sandbags. This year’s work was completed several weeks earlier than previous years in anticipation of a major storm system in midOctober. The cost of erecting the sand berm and associated works, including disassembly, is $50,000 annually. “We have looked at the possibility of leaving the sand berms in place,” said Lan. “We have a design for that and we will be approaching those property owners to see if they’d be willing to have that.” The discussion also shifted to the fact several homes along the water don’t have seawalls and don’t appear to be in any rush to install them. Lan noted new home construction has a requirement for a seawall to be 4.1 metres in height, but there is no such requirement for older homes. “The waterfront homes are the first line of defence and they offer a tremendous benefit for the entire community because if flood waters get past those homes, they will inundate the properties behind them,” he said. Lan added there will be further discussion with the community about the situation. Coun. Bruce McDonald noted an opportunity existed back in the 1990s for a proper seawall but some homeowners balked. “The federal government had funds available

to build a dike all the way along. I remember former colleague (councillor) Bob Mountfort worked for, I think, three years trying with people in the

area because the money was there… We knew it (the money) was going to disappear but they were absolutely adamant that they did not want a dike in

front of their house,” said McDonald. “At some point, someone is going to look at it and say, ‘How much do you spend each year to

protect a relatively low number of houses?’ It’s a pretty big bill for a half a dozen residences,” he added. Council agreed to sub-

mit an application to the province to give Delta the ability to deal with property owners who have a seawall and are willing to pay for rip rap.

Deltans could soon be living in the City of Delta. That bit of news came at the tail end of Monday’s Delta council meeting when Mayor Lois Jackson mentioned that during a visit last month to the Port of Antwerp and the Port of Rotterdam in Europe, a Delta delegation, which included herself, was mistaken as representing a business and not municipality. That’s because Delta’s official title is the Corporation of Delta. Jackson asked CAO George Harvie for a staff report on what it would take to change Delta’s name to the City of Delta and Harvie responded it’s something they’ve already looked at. Staff supports the name change. The idea will be discussed later this week at a business plan workshop. Delta was incorporated in 1879 and at that time was given its present

A municipality is deemed a corporation when it becomes a selfgoverning entity under the laws of the province it is located. In fact, every municipality is a corporation, according to Delta. “Although many municipalities have adopted shortened ver-

sions of their identities that don’t include the word Corporation, such as ‘City of’ or ‘Township of,’ Delta chooses to hold our original name because it honours our history and encompasses Delta’s diverse region and three distinct communities,” according to the municipality’s website.

Ottawa green lights Kinder Morgan expansion so Roberts Bank off the hook — for time being SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta got a reprieve from a potential oil pipeline going through the community. Despite getting heat from many quarters, including environmentalists, indigenous groups and local governments, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week his government is giving its blessing to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The federal government also gave the thumbs up to Enbridge’s Line 3, while it rejected the Northern Gateway proposal. “The decision we took today is the one that is in the best interests of Canada,” said Trudeau. “It is a major win for Canadian workers, for Canadian families and the Canadian economy, now and into the future.” The first-term PM said if the projects aren’t built, even more diluted bitumen from Alberta would have to be transported by rail. The Trans Mountain

expansion will nearly triple the capacity of an existing pipeline to 890,000 barrels a day, product that will head to an existing terminal in Burnaby. Delta was not involved in the application but that didn’t stop speculation the new pipeline could end up here if the Burnaby application was defeated. “Kinder Morgan has a long, long list of hurdles to cross before it is a done deal. This isn’t over yet and Delta is going to have to remain vigilant — lest we wake up one day to a nasty surprise,” said Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. Against Port Expansion’s Roger Emsley was also pleased to hear the announcement, which means Deltaport and Roberts Bank will not be used as an oil tanker terminal, but he said he remains concerned about the overall degradation of the Fraser River and its estuary. Kinder Morgan earlier stated Delta had been examined and routing a pipeline to Roberts Bank was less desirable from

both economic and environmental perspectives, and that the community wasn’t being considered as a so-called “Plan B. ” However, that didn’t stop South Delta coming up in the conversation as former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt recently told the media that Trudeau should consider an alternative to the $6.8-billion Kinder Morgan proposal. He said an alternate route had to be considered, either to Roberts Bank or to the Cherry Point refinery in Washington state. Last year, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley also suggested Kinder Morgan’s highly contentious pipeline might need to be re-routed, pointing out South Delta as a possibility. A group called Concerned Professional Engineers made the same suggestion. Premier Christy Clark last week stopped just short of endorsing the Kinder Morgan’s expansion, but noted she believes almost all the conditions the province has insisted on have been met.

ime flies when you’re having fun. When I was alerted last month that the Boys and Girls Club would be celebrating 20 years in its Ladner clubhouse, it made me feel happy… and old. I got involved with the club about 25 years ago before it had a permanent home in the community, running floor hockey programs out of school gyms as well as acting as a chaperone for teen dances at the Ladner Community Centre. For whatever reason, the dances tend to stick in my mind, perhaps because trying to keep tabs on a couple hundred teenagers made you anxiously wait for the DJ to play that last slow song to signify the night was coming to an end, save for the cleanup of course. I ran programs in the new clubhouse for a year or two, but once my son was born, I gravitated to other community organizations, although the Boys and Girls Club was never far away. Once my son got to a certain age, the clubhouse became a place for him as he took part in drop-in programs, after school care and summer camps. We even hosted one of his birthday parties there. My last memories of his involvement with the club were the Grade 7 dances, which, from all accounts, featured more standing at opposite ends of the gym than actual dancing, but were must-attend events nonetheless. In some respects, it’s hard to believe the clubhouse has been around for two decades as it doesn’t seem that long ago that people like Leslie Abramson, Doug Husband and the late Muriel Collins were knee-deep in a capital campaign that found a generous benefactor in Errol Wintemute, after whom the building is named. The facility they all helped build has now served a generation in Ladner, providing a place to have fun, to make friends, to be mentored, and to build skills and confidence to face an everchanging world. The Boys and Girls clubhouse has become an integral part of this community, having touched the lives of thousands in the process. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who made it happen as well as to those, both staff and volunteers, who have kept it running for all these years. The bottom line is that Ladner is better off because the Boys and Girls Club came to town.

A little snowfall is a reminder that Christmas isn’t far away

I

f there was any question that Christmas is on its way, Monday morning should have put all the uncertainty to rest. There’s nothing like waking up to a snowfall, especially in Vancouver. Put even a dusting of snow on the ground here and the majority of the population comes to a grinding halt. And we admit it — a recent BCAA survey showed that twothirds of respondents said they were nervous driving in the snow and almost half said they were experienced but bad at driving in winter conditions. What scared me was the one-third of people who said there was no need to prepare because they consider themselves to be good drivers. I worked for a tire company for a few years, and learned more about winter tires than anyone ever wants to know (and they tell me that, often!). Lots of people say we don’t need winter tires in Vancouver, but I know different. The most dangerous time to drive is between -6 and 0 degrees Celsius, because that’s when a micro-thin layer of water can show up on the ice. It’s the water you slide on, not the ice, and that’s why Vancouver driving is so dangerous in these conditions.

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

I’m not trying to be a salesman for tire dealers. I want to get to work and back home safely. It only takes one of those one-third who say we don’t need to prepare to spin out and block traffic for miles and miles, not to mention potentially hitting and hurting anyone else. Not only is it piece of mind, but your all-season tires last twice as long because you only use them for half the year, plus avoiding the hassle and expense of an accident. ICBC should really be giving us a discount on our insurance if we use winter tires. Another way to stay safe on the roads is make sure you don’t drive after drinking. There’s no excuse for it, all you have to do if you have a few drinks is call

Operation Red Nose. From now until New Year’s, they are on the road every Friday and Saturday night, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., ready to drive you and your car back home. For a small donation, you’ll make the streets safer without giving up any holiday cheer. One way to give back at this time of year is donating to Deltassist for its Christmas programs, the Toy Depot and Christmas hampers. It seems like such a small thing to give a toy or a bit of money, but the impact that donation has on a family is immeasurable. The Toy Depot, despite its name, is for kids up to 16 years old, so please don’t forget the older kids if you do donate. Living where we do, we have a great deal to be thankful for. Making the holidays special for someone else, by supporting a local charity or just making sure you get home safely, is the greatest gift you can give. Merry Christmas, and have a safe, healthy and heartwarming holiday. Brad Sherwin, MBA has over 25 years’ experience in marketing, public relations and business strategy. Legion pleased by response to annual ceremony

Editor: All hail Christy’s dream bridge, a $3.5-billion span across the Fraser River with a spider web of interchanges at either end and down the highway into Vancouver. Ladner and Tsawwassen are about to become unrecognizable. Big developers are rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of redevelopment. Watch your neighbourhood stores evaporate and be replaced by large condo towers with token small coffee shops and hairdressers below. Gone will be your friendly neighbourhood grocer, your local produce store, your small repair shop or hardware store. Walking neighbourhood streets and greeting your neighbours along the way as they work in their yards will be replaced by interior corridors and elevators where real air and daylight are replaced by Hvac systems and artificial light. Your local farms are not exempt either. The squeeze is on them too. We are living on borrowed time. What is behind this change? Greedy, powerful developers who are not interested in our community or our residents. Why a massive bridge to eliminate traffic jams at the George Massey Tunnel? A large bridge will only bring more traffic. Instead, why not build proper transit to accommodate all the traffic coming from Surrey. Build light rail transit with adequate feeder buses and the need for a bridge will be eliminated. Phyllis Ruthven

Turner and the Delta Police Pipe Band piper, the Delta Choral Society and all of those volunteers and others who helped make this one of the best Remembrance Day ceremonies we’ve had. We would also like to thank all the volunteers that sold poppies for us and to all the local businesses that allow us to put poppy boxes in their stores. Remembrance Day is often all the community sees of the Royal Canadian Legion, which has a deep, rich history in Delta and

Canada Line to the airport is. It’s widely used and so convenient. The same would be true with a line to the ferry terminal with stops at Ladner, Tsawwassen and the new Tsawwassen Mills. Buses don’t cut it. It’s time to link the citizens of South Delta to the SkyTrain system. Barrie McDonald

Editor: Knock! Knock! Hello, TransLink, anybody home? The time has arrived for TransLink to publically proclaim the next phase of mass transit expansion should be a SkyTrain route over the new bridge to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. Look how popular the

communities across Canada, supporting not only the military/veteran community but more and more the needs of the local community. We are possibly the largest service organization in Delta, from contributing over $70,000 per year to our local communities through various fundraising activities, helping with the Christmas hampers and donating over $200,000 to the Delta Hospital Foundation over the past 20 years. We totally rely on our selfless volunteers.

These are the same volunteers that help with all of the organization that takes place on Remembrance Day. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and backgrounds and contribute countless hours to make sure we can continue to provide these services not only to our veterans and survivors, but to all of the community. We are very proud of what they do. The weather this year held off for us, and it’s been estimated we had a record with well over 5,000 people in attendance. We

don’t think it is important which Remembrance Day ceremony you attend, but it’s important to attend and participate in all ways you can. What’s most important is to take the time to remember and be thankful for all the men and women who sacrificed their lives and continue to protect our freedom. This is what Remembrance Day is all about. Al Ridgway President Royal Canadian Legion — Branch 61

‘Jurassic Jackson’ backs bridge Editor: Re: Four-lane Pattullo bad news for Delta, Nov. 30 A friend of mine has taken to referring to our mayor as “Jurassic Jackson” and I’m beginning to think the dinosaur label could be applied to our entire Delta council and senior staff if this latest report is anything to go by. Every authoritative study, report and commentary on transportation in the 21st century points out that we need to reduce the number of cars on our roads and particularly create disincentives for single driver vehicle occupancy. Massive new multi-lane bridges — whether the Pattullo or the George Massey Tunnel replacement — that are designed to ease traffic congestion

for single-driver automobiles and trucks go exactly in the wrong direction. If you combine the imminence of catastrophic climate change ending life as we know it with more mundane concerns around urban sprawl, food sufficiency and quality of life, it becomes clear that anyone promoting more traffic lanes not exclusively devoted to mass public transit is not just from another century but a different geologic era. In fact, scientists now refer to the current period as the Anthropocene — the first time in the history of the earth that human activity is producing significant climactic change on a planetary scale. So, I guess, my friend is correct, Mayor Lois Jackson is almost literally a

dinosaur, which wouldn’t be so bad if the extinction event she is contributing to only affected people like her. However, we all share a single biosphere so the repercussions of these obsolete, unscientific and reckless policies affect all of us, our children and future generations. That is why a number of concerned local residents are preparing to launch a community effort in the new year to galvanize public opposition to the so-called Massey Tunnel replacement project. It is a colossal waste of money better put toward real transportation solutions and has to be stopped before irreversible damage is done to our community, our region and the planet. Bob Ages

KinVillage is planning for the future Public gets chance at open house to provide input on master plan for Tsaw. seniors complex IAN JACQUES

KinVillage is looking to the future through a master planning process that’s now three years in the making. Last Thursday, representatives from CPA Development Consultants and KinVillage staff pre-

sented a draft plan at an open house. The master plan aims to responsibly manage the central Tsawwassen site over the next 15 to 20 years, said Graham Plant, development manager with CPA Development Consultants, who were hired by the KinVillage board to complete the

planning process. Plant said the proposed master plan outlines new buildings and an expansion of the services that KinVillage provides. “There are lots of potentials and a lot of possibilities with this proposed plan,” he said. “There is the potential of enhanced seniors’ housing, potential expansion of residential care and a more comprehensive and well thought out site plan to serve both KinVillage and community members.” Plant said the idea behind the open house was to get some feedback from the public. The plan was also presented to the KinVillage board during an internal session earlier in the day. “We’ve heard that KinVillage is an excellent provider of care. We’ve heard that KinVillage is a hub for the community. We’ve heard parking is a concern both in KinVillage and the surrounding area. We’ve heard a great appreciation for green space and wanting to encourage more green space in the future. We’ve heard there is a need for the type of services KinVillage provides,” said Plant. “Residents and community members feel that

Missing phone classified as a First World problem

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

When most folks lose socks, they’re not given to a conniption. Same with pens. And hairbrushes. And magazines. It may be annoying when these items part company with their owners, but it’s scarcely an end-of-world issue. That would apply to something else. There was the husband, two weeks ago. He’d lost something, and it happened not to be a sock, a magazine or a coffee cup, red or otherwise. “This is crazy!!!” he panted. “I think I’ve lost my phone!” Ah yes, the dreaded missing phone conun-

drum. Make that: the dreaded missing phone crisis. To most of us, after all, a phone is like an appendage. It may not be attached, but it might as well be. The husband was clearly distraught. He looked in his jacket. He looked in his briefcase. He looked in his office. Nothing. “Phone your phone,” I suggested. The husband did just that. The missing appendage may have been ringing somewhere, but not where we could hear it. Bizarre. It wasn’t so long ago, really, when this never, ever happened. Like most folks, the husband and I did not carry a phone wherever we went. We carried car keys. We carried wallets. We carried umbrellas. But a phone was something we left in the house when we made our way to work. Not once did it ever go missing. Now, however, phones are rather like shoes: you can’t leave home without

them. I know this, of course, whenever I step outdoors. No matter whether I’m at the park or on the bus or in a restaurant, there they are: the other members of the human race, all clutching their appendages. And should they lose them, well, they’d be more than a little perturbed. Boggles the mind, really, why no one has yet invented the Cling-Ding-a-Link, a device that ensures a phone is attached — magnetically or magically — to its owner. Forget your cell phone at the pub? No problem! It’ll follow you home, three feet behind. you But alas, there’s no cling thing, so far as I know. Which leaves us with this: the husband in full-on panic mode. “Did you check the car?” I wondered. The husband raced outside and returned two minutes later, lost device in hand. “Good thought,” he said. “Thank you.” He hadn’t needed a magical thing. He’d only needed a wife.

Public helps officer catch honour box thief

DPD Strong

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD

The Delta Police Department is proud of two things: our “no call to small” philosophy and our vision of “a safer and better community through excellence in policing.” What makes these principles extra special is when our community responds to issues in the same way. Recently, we had a file that was out of the ordinary; but again, this is an out of the ordinary community. The file was summarized in a report by the on-duty sergeant: “The victim is a local Ladner farmer who operates a small local market on River Road West. What is unique about this market is not the fact it sells local, homegrown produce, fruit preserves, chili sauces, etc. The unique part is this market operates completely on an honour system. You take what you need and leave the money in a cash box.

“On Sept. 7, cash and several food items were stolen to the tune of $320. Luckily it was caught on video surveillance. What is very cool is that the video was fanned out via social media to another local South Delta Facebook group. It has about 2,000 South Delta residents. Voila, South Delta residents band together and identify the suspect. The DPD constable did his part, located and arrested the individual. He had a first court appearance on Nov. 25.

This file is a classic example of the power of the community in keeping our community safe and holding offenders accountable for their actions. The fact that a farmer can still sell products on an honour system in this day and age is, simply put, awesome. But on top of that, a community rallying together to ensure this way of life is protected is beyond words. I am also proud of the work of our constable, who recognized this theft was more than the face value

The fact that a farmer can still sell products on an honour system in this day and age is, simply put, awesome. But on top of that, a community rallying together to ensure this way of life is protected is beyond words. “In conclusion, as a Delta citizen myself, I’m proud of our department for this file and the type of work we do on a daily basis. As the constable’s friend, co-worker and occasional supervisor, I’m proud of the work he did on this file.” We often talk about the role of the community in public safety and that the police cannot do their jobs without public support.

of the cash and product stolen; that following through and arresting the thief sends a message to anyone who lives, works or visits Delta that little things matter. The relationship and trust we have with the community coupled with the great work of our officers makes solving files like this possible. Together, we are #DPDSTRONG.

Rotarians team up with police to fill purses for women DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen is teaming up with Delta police to help make less fortunate women in the community feel special. Women from both the Rotary club and police have filled nearly 60 purses with items like scarves, gloves and jewelry, said Rotarian Leslie Abramson. She said she was very pleased to see the really nice and thoughtful items that were included. Abramson said it’s a good partnership between the club and police department. “Rotary is really pleased they wanted to jump on board and be part of this,”

she said. The purses will be distributed through the Ladner Community Kitchen and Delta Police Victim Services. Delta police spokesperson Sharlene Brooks said sometimes it only takes a simple gesture to change someone’s day and make it a little brighter. She noted when there are pressures to buy the essentials — like food and clothing — moms and/or young ladies wouldn’t normally splurge on a purse, or the treats they might find inside it. “We hope it brings a little smile to their face and a boost in their step,” Brooks said. Last year purses were given out to four agencies to distribute.

Pacerscan’tovercometoughdraw Senior boys volleyball team finishes 10th at provincials after being seeded 15th MARK BOOTH

It was a marquee Saturday match-up at the B.C. AAA Boys Volleyball Championships. It just happened about six hours too early as far as the Van Tech Talisman and Delta Pacers were concerned. Ranked among the top four teams all season, the two powerhouses squared off for ninth-place after disappointing conclusions to their impressive campaigns. The entertaining match saw the East Vancouver school rally to defeat their Ladner counterparts 2-1 (2225, 29-27, 15-5). Both walked off the floor at the Langley Events Centre wondered what might have been. The No. 3 seed Talisman’s provincial medal hopes ended with a stunning five-set round of 16 loss to city rival and No. 14 Killarney. For the Pacers, they simply never recovered from a disastrous finish two weeks earlier at the Fraser Valley Championships. The tournament’s top seed came up just short in a thrilling

five-set semi-final heartbreaker to Semiahmoo. The Totems used momentum from the emotional win to not only win the Valley title but capture the B.C. championship as well with another five-set triumph over Kelowna. Almost the unthinkable happened to Delta. The Valley hosts dropped backto-back matches in consolation play to Seaquam and Earl Marriott to slip all the way to sixth place in the final standings. They were then subsequently punished by the provincial tournament seeding committee, ranked 15th in the 20-school event. Meanwhile, Seaquam and Marriott received much more desirable paths and both finished in the top eight. The Seahawks ended up fourth overall. “That game put us off a little bit,” admitted Grade 12 standout Keaton Mann, of the loss to Semiahmoo. “Obviously we were very disappointed. We tried to focus on those two games but it was super tough. In volleyball, you can lose a couple of points and it can feel like everything is crashing

down. It’s like a ripple effect and there is nowhere to hide on the court with just six players. It really is a team game.” The Pacers did manage to move up to the 13th seed after going 3-0 in provincial power play pool last Wednesday but that still meant a round of 16 match-up with Fraser Valley runner-up and No. 4 seed Walnut Grove. Delta got off to an encouraging start against its Langley opponent, taking the first set, 25-23. However, the Gators slowly began to take over, led by towering hitters Andrew Goertzen (6-foot-8) and Brett Christensen (6-foot-5). They rallied to win the next three games (25-17, 25-23, 25-17) to send the Pacers to the consolation bracket. It was a similar script to what happened in the Valley semi-finals when the Pacers had few answers for Semiahmoo big hitter and eventual provincial MVP Michael Dowhaniuk. Head coach Carson Kauenhowen said much of the preparations for provincials focused on better team defence. He also tried to downplay the

potential tough draw, knowing his team was going to have to beat an elite opponent at some point. “We had to accept where we had put ourselves based on the Fraser Valleys which made things more difficult for us. You have to beat the best teams eventually. Walnut Grove played a great game and hats off to them,” he said. “I think what happened at the Valleys is we set our sights too far down the road. Because we weren’t in the place we planned to be it was hard to be motivated. I think overall, without having something to play for, they had a really hard time getting up (for those consolation games).” The Pacers also struggled with their consistency at times with untimely breakdowns and mental errors. “The provincials are a difficult tournament,” added assistant coach and former Pacer standout Spencer Kyte. “You have to bring it every single game. They all matter. When you aren’t doing the things you need to do on your side of the net it can make things really tough.”

Field Hockey B.C. honours pair of Delta Falcons grads

U12 Soccer

South Delta Impact battled the Surrey United Scorpions in District 5 U12 Division Two boys soccer action on Saturday at Dugald Morrison Park.

A pair South Delta standouts were honoured at Field Hockey B.C.’s annual awards night. National team veteran Sara McManus was named Senior Female Player of the Year. At just 23, she already has an impressive 111 international caps to her credit. The Tsawwassen native was selected to the senior national team in 2011, achieving a near podium performance at that year’s Pan American Games in Rio. McManus’ career highlights include a silver medal at the 2012 Junior Pan American Championships, participation in the 2013 Junior World Cup, senior representation at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, and a bronze medal finish at the Pan-American Games in 2015 on home soil. The other local major award winner was Tsawwassen teen Rowan Childs being named Senior Under 23 Maple Player of the Year. The recently turned 16-year-old enjoyed an outstanding campaign and was impressive enough to be a late addition to Canada’s U21 national team that is currently in India for the Junior World Cup. He earned his spot after an impressive performance at the storied India Club Tournament in Surrey last spring where he suited up for B.C.’s U18 team. The event is loaded with senior and junior

Sara McManus national team players and is closely scouted by Canadian coaches. “Rowan has been an outstanding addition to our team,” said Canadian U21 head coach Indy Sehmbi. “He has shown tremendous commitment to his physical and technical improvement, especially over the past five months. “His teammates describe him as a pivotal part of our team and an up and coming leader within our team.” Childs is joined at the Junior World Cup by Ladner’s Gavin Bains.

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM

SEASONAL GREENHOUSE WORKERS

December 1937 - 2014

PALINKO, Christine Elaine (1969 - 2016)

Gone is her wry wit. Gone is her beautiful smile. Gone is a person who was loved by many. What stays in our hearts are the wonderful memories of a fun, thoughtful, warm soul now at peace after a brief battle with cancer at 47 years of age. Left behind to grieve are her parents, Bob and Edith, brothers Robert (Gabriella) and Ronald (Bernadette), her nieces Alexandra, Josi (Robert), Emily and Tracy, great-niece Noa and many heartbroken friends. Christine was born in Vancouver, BC but moved shortly thereafter to spend most of her life in Ladner where she attended Delta Secondary School. Numbers were her livelihood and her life was rich with travel, fashion, food and friends. She loved to get together for tea, enjoy a meal with friends or go for a walk in the sunshine with her much beloved “fur baby”, Regi. We will miss you, Christine. On Friday, December 2, 2016, a Celebration of her life was held. In her memory a donation to Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
