Big waves and big fun will be in store this summer when the all-new Big Splash Water Slide Park opens in Tsawwassen.

Construction was continuing at a steady pace when the Optimist stopped by the site this

week.

General manager Harold Frederiks said the park will open to school groups on June 12 with the official opening to the public set for Saturday, June 24. After that the park will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Labour Day. “The park is starting to come

together,” Frederiks said. “The winter and early spring hasn’t cooperated weather-wise, but we are hustling and we will get it done.”

Last September the taps were turned off at Splashdown Park for what appeared to be the final time. But in January, Executive Hotels & Resorts announced the

park would be re-opened as Big Splash.

“It’s really exciting, especially for myself,” said Frederiks. “I was with Splashdown for many years so to see the transformation happening and the park getting a major makeover is really cool to be a part of.”

Firefighters honour mayor Jackson humbled to become first civilian honourary member of IAFF Local 1763

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson recently received a first of its kind civilian firefighting honour from Delta firefighters.

At the Canadian Legislative Conference in Ottawa, the Delta Firefighters Association

presented Jackson with an award signifying she was the first civilian honourary member of IAFF Local 1763.

“We wanted to recognize her in front of our leaders as she has been so supportive of the Delta Fire Department and her continued efforts in making Delta a safer place for

her residents,” said Local 1763 secretary Carson Isfeld.

“She has been responsible for opening a number of fire halls throughout Delta and also was a major player in helping us to offer further enhanced medical services to the residents of Delta. Because of her continued efforts to

public safety, we as a local wanted to present her with this award. This is a first time that this local has honoured someone in this regard. This is an achievement that she so richly deserves.”

Jackson was in Ottawa at the time of the conference on municipal business and thus was able to receive

the award in person.

Jackson said she was humbled by the honour.

“I was really dumbfounded. I’m such a chatterbox, so I was speechless. It was so unexpected,” she said.

“This award has never been presented to a civilian before, so I was blown away,” Jackson recalled.

Major renovations in works for revamped waterpark

Phase two of the project will see some new slides in 2018 with phase three, the opening of a boutique-

style hotel, set for 2019.

“When Executive took over it was very exciting for so many people. We all thought, including myself, that Splashdown was done, but Executive has come in and stepped up,” Frederiks added. “They want to really be a part of this community.”

Dave Lemire and his team of climbers raised over $10,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital last weekend.

The 12-person group took turns climbing the stairs at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen during a 24-hour relay that began at noon on Saturday.

Climb for Kids 3 received a lot of volunteer help and community support, Lemire said.

“People were so good at just coming and supporting the team,” he said, noting there was a constant stream of family and friends on hand.

manager at Save-OnFoods in Tsawwassen, said $10,500 had been raised as of Monday morning, with more donations still coming in.

He climbed the midnight to 2 a.m. shift, with support from his daughter Brooke, and noted the park itself, all lit up with lights “looked truly unbelievable.”

Last weekend marked the third edition of Lemire’s fundraiser. The first two editions Lemire climbed by himself for a shorter period of time.

He noted Tsawwassen’s Taylin McGill, the 2017 Champion Child for B.C. Children’s Hospital, visited with climbers and volunteers at the event.

The largest cargo vessel ever to come to Canada arrived at Deltaport last Friday.

Terminal operator Global Container Terminals was called by Hapag-Lloyd’s 13,200-TEU Antwerpen Express. The Hamburg class is a new fleet of vessels that comes with an improved environmental footprint, according to a statement by GCT Canada, which operates the Vanterm and Deltaport container terminals.

GCT Deltaport is the Antwerpen Express’s firstport-of-call directly from the Far East.

A spokesperson with the Port of Vancouver noted the vessel will make Deltaport a regular stop.

There are 10 sister ships to the Antwerpen Express and some of them will also be visiting the port.

GCT completed a $280-million project last November to expand its Deltaport intermodal yard to increase its annual capacity to 1.9 million TEUs. The project increases rail capacity by over 50 per cent within the existing footprint, enabling better handling of big ship volumes.

Also having arrived at the Delaport container facility are 12 new stateof-the-art gantry cranes made in Finland that will help the facility become “big ship ready.”

GCT also operates two facilities on the East Coast: GCT New York on Staten Island, NY and GCT Bayonne in Bayonne, NJ.

House prices up in Tsawwassen for the second month in a row

South Delta home prices are on their way up again.

According to April figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the “benchmark” price of a singlefamily detached home in Tsawwassen was $1,202,900, up two per cent from the previous month and 3.5 per cent higher than three months ago.

The “benchmark” price of a single-family detached home in Ladner was $968,300, up 2.2 per cent from March, although it’s unchanged from three months ago.

The recent rise in prices comes after a decline in the market in the latter half of 2016, which came on the heels of sharp increases over the first half of last year.

That roller coaster means Ladner prices are now virtually the same as they were a year ago, while homes in Tsawwassen are three per cent higher than at this time in 2016. Prices are up dramatically from three years ago in both Ladner (56.7 per cent) and Tsawwassen (63.9 per cent).

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver notes that last month residential property sales in the region were 30.8 per cent lower than sales recorded in record-breaking March 2016, although they’re up compared to the last couple of months.

“While demand in March was below the record high of last year, we saw demand increase month-to-month for condos and townhomes,” said board president Jill Oudil.

“Sellers still seem reluctant to put their homes on the market, making for stiff competition among home buyers.”

Meanwhile, prices are rising in North Delta, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, which notes the “average” price of a house was $930,821 in April, up 4.6 per cent The Fraser Valley saw a decrease in April of almost 25 per cent compared to the same time last year, but a slight increase from March 2017.

A Tsawwassen home is one of the finalists for a 2017 AIBC Architectural Award.

Long-vacant site to become industrial park

Beedie developing Delta Link Business Park near Fraser River where chemical facility once stood Liberal cabinet minister Rich Coleman and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson joined the Beedie Development Group Tuesday to break ground on Delta Link Business Park, one of Western Canada’s largest private industrial projects currently under development.

“Delta Link Business Park is already 70 per cent sold or preleased, which is an unprecedented level of commitment,” said company president Ryan Beedie. “We are excited to be creating hundreds of job spaces on a site that has been largely vacant for 20 years.”

Delta Link Business Park is located along the Fraser River in the Tilbury area. The Huston Road site was home to a chemical facility from the 1960s to the early 1990s. Environmental remediation on portions of the site began more than 20 years ago, and by 2013, the brownfield site was fully remediated to Ministry of Environment

In 2015, Beedie purchased the site and rezoned it from chemical plant use to industrial,

allocating 84 acres for development, 15 acres for parkland and 4.4 acres for new municipal roads and public space.

building one million square feet distributed across seven buildings, all of which are in various stages of development.

In recognition of Beedie’s ongoing contribution to the community, the Corporation of Delta will name a new road at Delta Link Business Park Beedie Way. Delta Link Business Park’s first tenants are expected to move in this year. Leon’s Furniture will move into a 434,000-square-foot facility, while Swiss Water Decaffeinated Co. will headquarter at the park.

North Delta Seafoods is expanding its processing facility from its 9,000-square-foot facility to 51,900 square feet.

All seven buildings will be complete by early next year with more buildings planned.

ross your fingers, Tsawwassen, that the schedule gods are in a good mood this summer.

Crews are poised to move south on 52nd Street and begin work on the section of the Metro Vancouver water main that stretches from Highway 17 up the hill to 12th Avenue, which means severely restricting traffic on one of two access points to Tsawwassen. The work will be done in phases, and municipal officials have done their best to devise detours, but there’s no getting around the fact the project will make getting in and out of town a real hassle.

The pipe is old and leaky, so the work’s got to be done, but how long it takes is another question, one that could be asked with an increasing degree of contempt if what’s been taking place on the north side of Highway 17 is any indication. Work began there shortly after the calendar turned to 2017, with an original completion date of the end of February. When the road was still ripped up in mid-March, we were told the project would be completed by the start of April, but now the road won’t re-open until May 15.

If you’re scoring at home, that sevenweek job has taken 18 weeks, presuming, of course, the road re-opens next Monday. The next phase is expected to last approximately four months, so we can only hope it has better luck adhering to the construction schedule. *** Last Monday Mayor Lois Jackson was the guest of honour at a Liberal rally in North Delta at which time she endorsed leader Christy Clark and local candidates Ian Paton and Scott Hamilton. With a close race in Delta North, I imagine Jackson was urged to come forward in the hopes of tipping the balance in favour of Hamilton, a former municipal councillor.

Later in the week, when asked by one of our reporters about the Mayors’ Council creating a voters’ guide that praised the NDP, Jackson said she didn’t think it was appropriate for mayors to try and influence the election. “I don’t think we should be leading people to make a certain vote for a certain party,” she said.

Say what? The mayor has every right to be critical of her regional colleagues for their position on the bridge, but when it comes to wading into election campaigns, she can’t have it both ways.

Efforts needed to ensure frail seniors are keeping active

I

n order for seniors to stay in their homes longer, we need to address four big health issues: social isolation, physical exercise, nutrition and access to information. Simply put, getting out, moving those creaky bones, eating at least one good meal a day and finding resources.

Isolation can lead to depression and possibly dementia. Lack of exercise can lead to falls and hospitalization, not eating properly can lead to malnutrition.

Personally, I’m fine on three out of four, and a bit too good on the nutrition part, but I fail on moving these old bones. I sit too much in front of a computer and this is starting to take its toll. The brain may be holding up, but the body rebels.

A gentleman by the name of Greg Edwards wrote to me about “Winskill staff putting a kibosh on seniors’ exercise sessions” in Tsawwassen. He wrote letters to the municipality, the Optimist and to our politicians. He is upset the Fit & Functional classes, which use chairs for frail individuals, cancelled two out of three weekly sessions due to fluctuating attendance.

Edwards laments the cancellations, saying it was “a class meant to serve the needs of our most frail who have a hard time standing, they can’t walk far, they suffer from poor balance, arthritis, osteoporosis.”

He’s right. These are the very folks we need to help to get out and to move. These sessions should not be based on attendance stats, which can vary from one to 12 depending on weather, driving assistance and various ailments that might prevent someone from attending. If the instructor is only working with one individual on any day, that should be OK. There may be 12 next time.

Edwards rightfully suggests those transporting the senior could also be counted.

Our seniors’ centres fall under Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department, which does a pretty good job overall, at least for those who are relatively spry.

There are six recreation centres plus the three seniors’ centres, counting Kin Village, which serve hot lunches. A gap is occurring in the frail seniors programming.

These residents need a reliable drop-in, chair-based, movement

program that does not depend on numbers registered.

Delta might consider North Burnaby’s SAIL program (Seniors Active in Living). It offers advocacy, socializing, exercise and nutrition — for $2 or by donation.

They have a coordinator co-sponsored by Burnaby and a private retirement centre.

Every week the members 55+ drop-in to hear a wellness speaker, participate in gentle chair exercises, maybe have a massage (shoulders, hands or feet) then convene for a reasonably priced hot lunch.

Volunteers run the various massage and therapeutic touch stations. A nurse from Fraser Health does blood pressure checks and once a month a podiatrist runs a foot clinic for an extra fee. Centre staff also get to know the folks who may need more help.

The clientele are regulars and rely on this program to maintain their health, which results in them being able to stay longer in their homes.

The SAIL program addresses all four concerns of advocacy, exercise, nutrition and social engagement. It’s a win-win for the senior and the system.

They’ve already been working on 52nd Street north of Highway 17 for this entire calendar year and if there’s one thing that I’ve noticed, it’s the lack of people actually working. I drive by this site

daily and never do I see more than a handful of people and now they are going to do the same thing on the second busiest street in our community?

Delta should’ve said no, not unless you can triple the workforce and get it done in a month or less.

Arthur Drive will be under construction at the same time so now they are going to ask anybody travelling to Tsawwassen to drive via Highway 17 during the busiest ferry sea-

son of the year. And don’t forget the back to school shopping that will happen at Tsawwassen Mills come August. Yes, they’ll still be working at that time.

The intersection of 56th Street and Highway 17 is going to be a nightmare. I feel sorry for the small businesses that just opened at Tsawwassen Springs because, essentially, Metro Vancouver just cut their sales in half for the next four months.

I do not live in South Delta and if I did I may not be a political supporter of Nicholas Wong, but he is to be congratulated — not demeaned — for subjecting himself to the rigors of candidacy in this election.

Age and career choice are irrelevant. His age may, differently than Garvey tries (but fails) to characterize it, actually be seen as a badge of honour.

Laws apply to all drivers Editor: This letter is to the woman (with four young children in the car) driving the silver Audi sedan last Saturday around 1 p.m.

We were both stopped at the light heading south going into Tsawwassen at 56th Street waiting to cross Highway 17.

I noticed you were texting or reading texts on your cell, so I honked lightly and rolled down

my window. The young boy beside you in the passenger seat rolled down the window to hear what I was saying. I said, “You shouldn’t be on your phone, it’s against the law.”

You proceeded to smile and give me the one finger salute.

Well, that was very instructive for the four children under your care.

First of all, they get the message that “laws” don’t

apply to you or all people, and that when you are reminded you are breaking the law, you react with arrogance and defiance.

I guess you are “special” and that distracted driving won’t ever impact you, I guess the over 80 people who died last year in B.C from accidents caused by distracted driving are somehow less “special” than you.

Asking for disaster by using crosswalk

Editor: Kudos for Delta’s engineering department for installing a left turn signal at 16th Avenue and 56th Street. I quickly learned that using the north crosswalk was an invitation for disaster as all the traffic

was itching to get onto the highway.

I was almost run over twice by dudes in their mobile command centres within a month of moving near there.

Seriously, what’s the deal with dudes and

pickup trucks? This isn’t a farm. They cost a fortune, burn a fortune and few leave the safety of the pavement.

Focus on education to prevent online crime Catching cyber criminals from all over world is tough, so police department raising awareness

In the past 10 years, we have grown almost entirely dependent on technology to manage our lives.

From planning our social lives and booking appointments to shopping, banking and even filing taxes, so much of our lives happens in that great abyss known as the World Wide Web. And while it has made our lives easier in many ways, it has also created the perfect fishing hole for criminals from literally all over the world.

The Delta Police Department has 180 sworn police officers and 65 police staff. If we allocated 100 per cent of our resources to online crime and fraud, we still would not come close to putting a dent in the fraud and attempted fraud that occurs online.

The DPD is proud of its “no call too small” philosophy but when it comes to fraud, we are turning our focus more to prevention and education because we simply cannot police so much of what happens online.

More often than not, these crimes are not

perpetrated by criminals in Delta, but instead originate from countries in other parts of the world.

This makes it virtually impossible to trace, much less slap a set of handcuffs on anybody for it.

The Canadian AntiFraud Centre reported that Canadians are defrauded of about $100 million every year. It’s a lucrative business and the bad guys take advantage of new technology to do their work.

Being defrauded can bring with it a sense of embarrassment but the reality is, scams have become so sophisticated that you have to be vigilant to avoid being victimized. There is a scam out there for all of us: Identity theft, vacation scams, tax scams, romance scams and employment scams target a variety of different demographics, and criminals are moving into the social media world with an eye on millennials and younger.

Some of the most common frauds involve identity theft from governmentissued ID and credit cards stolen from vehicles. There are also Craigslist and CRA scams and Microsoft scams whereby a person posing as a Microsoft employee contacts you saying they have detected a virus on your computer and can remove it for a fee.

Now, before you resort to hiding money under the mattress, consider some modern solutions to protecting yourself from these common frauds: • Don’t leave your wallet or purse unattended

or even in your locked vehicle.

• Shred all bills, bank statements and any other documents that contain identity information prior to placing them in the trash.

• Regularly check your bank account for any unusual activity.

• Check your mailbox daily to prevent theft of mail.

• Arrange to pick up new cards such as credit cards at your bank rather than having them mailed to your home address.

• Don’t open any unknown emails, respond to unsolicited requests for personal information or click on random “pop ups” on your computer.

• Neither the CRA nor any bank will ever ask for payment or personal information through money transfer or gift cards or ask for personal information via phone, email or text message.

Criminals are some of the most inventive and adaptive people in our society. They learn very quickly where our weaknesses are and they take advantage. So much of the millions of dollars lost to fraud is handed over to criminals willingly by unsuspecting Canadians.

While the Delta police will do everything in our power to investigate and hold offenders accountable, cybercrime has no borders and prevention starts with you.

There are many things I happen to know. I know the difference between a dachshund and a Dalmatian. I can tell a Volvo from a Volkswagen. I know a rose from a rhodo.

I do not, however, happen to know figurative art from interactive art. In fact, beats me what interactive art even is. Does it talk to you? Invite you to take a seat inside the frame?

I am what you’d call an art simpleton.

This has become strikingly apparent in recent days. The husband and I have a bare patch of wall, and we’ve decided we

need to fill it.

We thought art might do the trick.

(The husband, I might add, is also an art simpleton. You could say we have lots in common.)

“What should we hang there?” I wondered. “What kind of art do you like?”

“Let’s see,” said the husband. “I’ve heard there’s something called decorative art. That might be nice.”

“Decorative?” I asked.

“Isn’t all art decorative?”

The husband shrugged his shoulders.

“I really have no idea,” he said. “But it sounds better than ugly art.”

We ruled out pictures of mountains, puppies and pears. We gave a thumbs down to flowers, rivers and sunsets. We opted not to go with people, trees and fishing boats.

“Forget the pictures,” said the husband. “I think we should be asking ourselves what kind of art we want.”

I embarked on some Internet sleuthing.

“Says here there’s some-

thing called conceptual art,” I said. “I wonder what that is.”

“Hmm,” the husband said. “It’s designed around a concept?”

“Maybe,” I said. “I can’t picture that.”

“Me neither,” he said.

The Internet told me there was something called new media art, and something else called digital art.

“No way,” I said. “That sounds way too high-tech for me. I’d rather go with old media art.”

We looked at the space on the wall and sighed.

“There’s also abstract art,” I told the husband.

“Oh,” he said. “I’ve heard of that. I think we’re talking blobs and stuff like that.”

“I believe you’re right,” I said. “It’s probably a lot like conceptual art. But I don’t really care for blobs.”

At the moment, we are still undecided, simpletons that we are. There’s a very good chance we’ll get nothing at all.

He said weather has also been a huge challenge.

“Certainly the heavy rains have not helped us the past few years,” he said. “The surface on the land gets so matted down and basically sealed up by the waterfowl that the water can not pass through. The weight of the water just sits there and settles the land and then we have to basically start all over again re-seeding the land and trying to re-grow the forage crop again. Future of sector in peril due to waterfowl damage

Delta is home to some of the most fertile and productive farmland in all of Canada.

For more than a century, farmers in Delta have provided a wide range of food products for the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Agriculture is a substantial contributor to Delta’s economy with estimated total gross farm receipts of $300 million, supporting the equivalent of 1,500 person years of employment.

But it is an industry that is facing significant challenges that could threaten its economic viability.

The Delta Farmers’ Institute (DFI) recently brought together farming and government representatives for a tour that visited several farms to illustrate the relationships between dairy farming and forage fields, irrigation supply and demand, and farming operations and non-farming expansion.

The central issue in the minds of many Delta farmers is whether the industry can continue to produce food for the present and future population in light of two significant factors.

The first is the conversion of prime farmland for non-agricultural uses, including highway construction, expansion of the railways, port expansion and industrial activities at Boundary Bay Airport.

The second is the increasing damage being caused by waterfowl -- including ducks, geese and swans -- on the productivity of farmland.

“One of the biggest positives being in Delta is being able to grow forage.

Because of our climate, the proximity to the ocean, the sea breeze, we don’t have the extreme climates and the fact that we live close to all of our processing plants,” said DFI vice-president Clarence DeBoer, owner of Eagleview Farms in East Ladner. “Those were big advantages to us many years ago, but a few of those advantages have been lost now. We have some of the highest costs for production in the area, our land values are high, the property taxes are high — there are many things that all combine together and add up and puts in place even more challenges for the farming community.”

Waterfowl on the rise Waterfowl have always been present in Delta, but over the years, due to a number of factors, their presence has increased.

“Waterfowl have always been around, but we are certainly seeing them in larger numbers,” said DeBoer. “We have a couple of issues here that have been a bit of a sore spot in the farming community: the wildlife sanctuary on Westham Island and the wildlife centre in Surrey — those were added in later years and to us those became an at-

traction. They’ve provided the hotel for them, but we ended up becoming the restaurant. It is a combination of population increase, the growth of the community, the added abundance of birds and the industrialization of the community.”

The DFI also points out that as more farmland is converted to non-farm uses, less land is available to support the waterfowl, which means the damage caused to the remaining grass fields will continue to increase.

Mitigation According to the DFI, Delta is an important feeding and resting area for hundreds of thousands of migratory ducks and geese, which cause significant damage to crops.

In attempts to resolve the constant interaction between waterfowl and farming, two mechanisms have been put in place — the establishment of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust and the wildlife damage compensation program through the Ministry of Agriculture.

But the compensation program does not adequately represent the full economic cost to forage producers. An independent report, cited by the DFI, indicates the compensation paid out to farmers represents less than 40 per cent of the losses sustained by farmers.

Farming practices changing Farmers have also implemented several changes in farming practices in an attempt to minimize the waterfowl damage, including laser leveling to eliminate ponding on fields and swapping highly nutritious grass crops to low value grass crops.

“It’s funny, when we need the rain we

don’t get it and when we don’t need the rain, we get tons of it, so irrigation issues are of a major concern to us,” added Deboer. “The financial impact of the waterfowl damage is going to be a difficult challenge to overcome. If society wants to see this continue then we are going to have to do something different, because we as farmers can’t be the only ones paying all the bills.

For providing green space, providing recreational areas, providing transportation and providing feed for waterfowl, there is no benefit that comes back to the farmer in a form of a monetary value to help offset what the farmer has to put out.”

According to the DFI, the future of the dairy sector in Delta is in peril if governments do not react in a meaningful way to address the damage caused by waterfowl.

Action required The DFI is proposing the establishment of a partnership with the provincial and federal governments dedicated to designing and implementing a strategy, which would address the issues of crop loss and damage caused by waterfowl.

“We can’t chase the waterfowl away, but we can’t just sit back and let this happen either,” Deboer said. “Collectively governments at all levels, the community at large and the farming community have to come together to find solutions.

The industry just can’t sustain this kind of damage much longer. Farmers are at their breaking point.”

Walk for Alzheimer’s set for Saturday in Ladner

A special Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s Walk in a Box will be held in Ladner this Saturday afternoon.

Walkers will show their support for those affected by dementia during the event at Delta Secondary from noon to 4 p.m.

a message of hope to the over 747,000 Canadians — including an estimated 70,000 British Columbians — currently living with dementia, and those who care for them.

Local organizer Youla Thomas is excited about hosting Saturday’s walk in Ladner.

“Alzheimer’s has affected an uncle and aunt that I am very close to in my family and most recently a close family friend. It is heartbreaking to see that they fail to remember their loved ones and are no more the independent and vibrant people that they used to be,” she says.

“I am hoping that through this walk, we will raise awareness of this disease and how our future generations can live healthy lives and find out ways on how to delay and even eliminate the chances of getting this disease.”

Thomas says participants of all ages can walk, run or dance their way around the high school track. There will be light refreshments, music and a Wall of Memories, where people can place a forgetme-not.

Officers hit links with students in annual high school golf tourney IAN JACQUES

High school students from across the province hit the links with members of the Delta police last month at what has become one of B.C.’s premier golf events.

The 13th annual Delta Police High School Golf Tournament is a co-partnership between the DPD, Delta Police Association and Delta School District.

The tournament was held at Kings Links and Northview golf courses, featuring 25 teams of some of the brightest young golfers in B.C. A team from Aldergrove won the tournament with North Delta’s Seaquam Secondary finishing second. The best score for the two-day event was a 66.

“There is a great partnership between the DPD, the school district and the two golf courses in making this tournament a highly successful event for the students,” said DPD public affairs coordinator

Sharlene Brooks.

Brooks said the tournament was started 13 years ago for several reasons.

For one, it creates an opportunity to have police interact in an informal environment with young people.

It also provides students an opportunity to connect with other young peo-

ple from outside of their school and neighbourhood, she said.

“Schools in neighbouring cities were invited and were glad to attend,” added Brooks. “This grew to become a provincewide, two-day tournament.”

The talent level is certainly high as evidenced

by the great scores and by some of those who have participated in the past, including current PGA Tour member Nick Taylor of Abbotsford.

“This golf tournament is a real highlight for the DPD. The challenge for us is finding officers that can keep pace with the talented students,” said Brooks.

Garden tour returns to South Delta

Tickets for a local garden tour are going on sale just in time for Mother’s Day. The South Delta Garden Club has partnered with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen to resurrect the local garden tour, the first in over a decade. The tour includes 10 distinct, private gardens in Ladner and Tsawwassen and will include the private garden of Brian Whitehouse,

the architect of the Secret Garden of Boundary Bay. “We feel a garden tour is an excellent way to promote our beautiful community and commemorate the significance of 2017,” says Ursula Schmelcher, president of the garden club.

The club has held annual plant sales since 2003 as its main fundraiser but will be celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2017 with a

garden tour.

The tour hopes to attract local residents as well as many garden lovers from throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond.

The styles of gardens selected for this year’s tour are unique and run the gamut, including woodland, natural, water’s edge, casual, eclectic and a garden that is a riot of blooms from home raised annuals.

The garden tour will be

held Sunday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for advance purchase and $20 on the day of tour. They will be available for sale beginning Friday at West Coast Seeds, Sunnyside Nurseries and Harris Nurseryland.

South Delta Garden Club members will also be selling tickets at the Ladner Save-On-Foods this Saturday.

Why start swimming lessons at an early age?

• Young children in swimming lessons are taught what it feels like to be under water, how to hold their breath, and progress to back floating after being submerged under water. Children who fall in the water without water safety skills will often panic, swallow water, or can sink to the bottom. Learning water safety and swimming skills at an early age helps keep your child safe in the water.

• A child less than one year of age can learn to float on their back, which is an essential water safety skill.

• Before babies are born they spend nine months in water, and babies under one year old more readily accept water. Getting your baby in the water early will mean less potential for them to develop a fear of the water.

• Swimming helps increase coordination, balance and strength, and stimulates circulation throughout the body.

Ladner lacrosse standouts Logan Schuss and Evan Messenger helped the Vancouver Stealth take a big step forward this season.

Playing their first-ever National Lacrosse League playoff game at the Langley Events Centre Saturday night, the Stealth dropped an entertaining 13-12 sudden death semi-final encounter to the Colorado Mammoth.

The game attracted a near capacity crowd of just over 4,000 fans — well above their season average.

They watched Vancouver play catch-up lacrosse for much of the evening and nearly send the game to overtime after a flurry of late goals.

The Stealth won its final three regular season games to finish at 9-9. It was a vast improvement from their three previous campaigns in Langley that produced no better than a 5-13 record.

“It’s exciting for B.C. Lacrosse.

It’s been a long time for this franchise to get back here and just having a playoff game for all pro sports teams in B.C.,” said Schuss.

“I think this team made a lot of believers in Vancouver sports and turned people into lacrosse fans.”

It was the 26-year-old’s firstever NLL playoff game and the dynamic left-hander certainly made the most of it.

Schuss finished with a teamhigh nine points — highlighted by a spectacular second quarter that saw him score three times, including a pair of one-handers as Vancouver stormed back to trail just 7-6 at the break.

“Everything seemed to be going in. I had a little extra step in my game and had to run with it and develop something for my team,” continued Schuss who amassed 76 points and 35 goals in 17 regular season games. “It worked and we got back into it.

“It’s exciting that we showed what we are capable of (this season). We are not the ‘Bad News Bears’ anymore. We are a feared team and, if we got to the second round, I know Saskatchewan weren’t going to be happy to see us.”

Messenger’s night was nearly over in the first quarter.

He rolled his ankle after being brought down behind the net and gamely returned for the second half after being taped up.

“The worst part was I just didn’t have much confidence in it,” said the 22-year-old who was icing the injury after the game.

Fortunately, it’s just a sprain.”

“Ever since last year’s Stealth season when I fell just a little short of making the roster, I have been working my butt off on what I needed to do to get into the

line-up. The little rookie things you have to do and set-up your primary scorers. I felt I was doing a good job with that and that’s why I was staying in the line-up,” he said.

“To be honest, it really has been a dream come true playing for this Stealth team. Tonight was the main thing of my dream — a playoff game and a full crowd with my friends and family I love watching. It is an experience I will never forget as a rookie. I’m already looking forward to next season and building from where

Once Messenger’s ankle is 100 percent, he will be heading to the provincial capital for his rookie season in the Western Lacrosse League with the Victoria Shamrocks.

He won’t have to look far to find some familiar faces with Stealth regulars Corey Small, Rhys Duch, Cory Conway and Jon Harnett also expected to be in the Shamrocks’ line-up.

“I’m super excited,” said the team’s top pick in February’s WLA Draft. “I will take whatever rest I need and dive head first into it.”

Schuss says he plans on re-joining the New West Salmonbellies early next month.

He was eighth in league scoring last year with 55 points in just 12 games.

It will be part of another hectic summer that includes working as an assistant coach again with the Delta Junior “A” Islanders.

He remains property of the Ohio Machine pro field lacrosse team and is not ruling out playing a few games for them as well. He will also be a groomsman in two wedding parties.

“There is a long list of stuff to do this summer,” he smiled. “The Machine are expecting me back and we will see how it goes. I wish I could be in three or four places at once.”

South Delta’s Watson & Eureby among 14 DHA players selected in WHL draft MARK BOOTH

A pair of homegrown products were among 14 players from the Delta Hockey Academy selected in Thursday’s 2017 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Defenceman Ryan Watson went 65th overall to the Medicine Hat Tigers, while goaltender Braedy Euerby was taken with the 103rd overall pick by the Vancouver Giants. Both came through South Delta Minor Hockey before shifting their careers over to DHA which is based out of South Delta Secondary School.

Watson was the lone South Delta player to crack DHA’s top Bantam Prep team last season. He managed 17 points in 30 regular season games and added three more in five post-season contests. The Wild, coached by SDMHA alumni Shane Kuss and Matt Erhart, finished with a 27-2-1 league record and reached the CSSHL championship game.

Euerby backstopped DHA’s Bantam Varsity team to a perfect season — 25-0-0 in league play, followed by the playoff championship. The Ladner native earned the division’s top goaltender award with seven shutouts in 11 league appearances. He finished with a paltry 0.45 goals against average and a .970 save percentage.

Euerby also thrives on the pitching mound for the Bantam AAA Delta Tigers where he is team captain this season. In last week’s win over Kamloops, he tossed a complete game no hitter with 17 strikeouts and also belted his first home run of the campaign. He currently leads the Tigers with a .480 batting average.

A whopping 13 players from the Bantam Prep team were selected in the draft — led by Surrey native Justin Sourdif going third overall to the Giants.

He finished second in Wild scoring with 66 points in 29 games. Also taken in the first round was Victoria native Payton Mount, 19th overall by Seattle. He had 67

Defenceman Trevor Thurston went 70th overall by the Edmonton Oil Kings. His dad Brent also came through North Delta Minor Hockey and played with Spokane in the Western Hockey League before being picked by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round of the 1991 NHL Draft.

He is now part of the DHA coaching staff.

Sun Devils open Valley Championships with win

The South Delta Sun Devils began their quest for a 16th straight trip to provincials with a 3-0 win over Lord Tweedsmuir Monday to open the Fraser Valley AAA Championships.

The senior girls soccer team is looking to extend its own record of

consecutive appearances at provincial tournaments. The Sun Devils have been seeded sixth for the 16-school Valley Championships after finishing second in South Zone League play with a 5-1-1 record.

They travel to Chilliwack this afternoon to take on East Zone win-

ner Sardis in the quarter-finals. The Falcons advanced with a 2-1 extra time win over Elgin Park.

The double knockout tournament continues next Monday and concludes on May 18. The provincials take place May 31 to June 2 in Burnaby.

Major University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with a leading hearing researcher at Ryerson University, seeks participants for a hearing study investigating the factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology.

The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

Why Research Hearing Loss?

Deep inside our ears are several thousand microscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions, or the process of aging itself. Just like a

hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help.2 This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. By studying those people having difficulty in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

Joseph Arndt Fast, age 75, passed away peacefully on April 24th at Peach Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC with his two daughters by his side.

Born in Russia in 1941, he was the son of his beloved mother Maria Toews. Joe graduated from the University of Manitoba with a large group of dentistry classmates and ran a successful dental practice in Vancouver for over 46 years. He remained close with those classmates until his final days.

"Kokanee Joe", as he was known to his many pals on the golf course and ball−field, was an avid sportsman from his earliest days. He excelled at hockey, baseball, and golf. In his later years he became a stickler for recording stats on his favorite teams.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy (nee Smith) with whom he shared 51 years, daughters Robin and Kelly Jo, their partners Darren and Jason, and his large group of friends who are considered honorary "Fast family" members and have been in his life for over 50 years.

Joe lived a large life full of laughter, sport, toasting with friends, and most importantly love and loyalty.

He has left a great mark on the world and his presence remains in the hearts of those who knew him best.

Joe would not have liked to leave behind a sad group of folks, so with that in mind his daughters are busily planning an event to honor his memory.

TAMBOLINE (PYBUS) Rhoda February 1, 1937 - April 29, 2017 Rhoda passed away quietly in the McBride, B.C. Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Rhoda was predeceased by husband Douglas, parents Archie and Doreen Pybus and brother Gerry Pybus. Surviving are children Rhonda (Norman) McNee, Perry (Brenda) Tamboline, Carey (Darcy) Tamboline, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, brother Rod (Connie) Pybus and sister Judy (Bill) Holmin, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held at The Lions Hall in Valemount, B.C.
