Delta will get a chance to present its case for a bridge to the new provincial government. Mayor Lois Jackson confirmed that she and CAO George Harvie will be given an opportunity to speak with newly appointed Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena tomorrow to discuss the George Massey Tunnel Replacement

The Tsawwassen Sun Festival should live up to its name if the weather forecast holds for the upcoming long weekend. The sun is expected to shine on the 45th edition of the annual summertime celebration, which kicks off Saturday and continues all B.C. Day weekend. The festival features three days of activities, highlighted by the Rotary Parade that will make its way along 56th Street Monday morning. Winskill Park will play host to much of the fun, including slo-pitch and volleyball tournaments, a classic car show, a Kid’s Funzone, food vendors and stage entertainment, which this year will feature the finals of Delta’s Got Talent, a youth showcase. There will also be activities at other venues around town over the long weekend: an antique fair and skateboard competition at the South Delta Recreation Centre, a drive-in movie at Beach Grove Elementary and Bingo at KinVillage. • Check out our complete Sun Festival coverage on pages 11 to 22.

Highway construction in conjunction with a new crossing has got underway much to the chagrin of protestors, but the new NDP government could soon have a decision on a contract for the bridge itself.

Bridge date drawing near Delta CAO says province could have contract decision to make by mid-August SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It looks like a drop-dead date for the new bridge is fast approaching. That’s according to Delta CAO George Harvie, who told Delta council last week that the new NDP government might have to decide by mid-August whether to kill the project. Harvie, who also spoke recently to the Vancouver Board of Trade on the subject, said the structure itself has a budget set at $2.5 billion with another $1 billion targeted for improvements to the Highway 99 corridor. Preliminary work has already begun for the highway.

“The bridge, the structure, word on the street is that there has been two accepted bids, both qualified. The low bid is $2.4 billion for the bridge structure… it falls within the set budget. Apparently the approval date for the last day that can be accepted by the province is sometime in mid-August. “We’ve asked the construction industry to have the word out to the premier and various politicians, people making decisions. I did say to the board of trade, and they’re all very supportive, is that this just isn’t Delta’s problem and Delta can’t do it on its own. We need the chambers, we need the board of trade, we

Delta has few allies on bridge

CONTINUED from Page 1 Only Delta and Langley Township voted against the motion, the latest frustrating move for Jackson by regional mayors hoping to kill the $3.5-billion project. “They say it’s not in their purview and the Mayors’ Council would not allow us to speak, yet today at Metro Vancouver they have a report saying they’re opposed to the bridge. Because Richmond

has come forward (with a twin tunnel proposal), now they’re saying, ‘We really do need a new crossing but we have to go back and do all the analysis for all the options.’” Jackson said it didn’t take long for the self-serving politics to kick in once again. “It was really ugly. I’ve never seen that kind of democracy in an organization which I took pride in chairing for six years. It’s

more about politics but when I was chair of the region I wouldn’t allow politics in the chamber.” The six-term Delta mayor said it’s looking like the other mayors will push for a new crossing to be delayed at least another 15 years, if it happens at all. “It’s really troubling to me. My staff have worked on this so long. We’ve asked all the questions and gotten all the answers,” she said.

support for a tunnel.” Richmond council last week requested the government stop work on the project until other options are explored, including Richmond’s idea of twinning the tunnel with either a two-lane or a four-lane crossing. “We’ve been accused of spreading myths, which is a possible way of suggesting we are lying,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. Also last week, Jackson’s request to make a presentation on the bridge at the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council was voted down. “The TransLink mayors don’t have even five minutes to consider one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Canada,” fumed Jackson.

Statements in column require corrections

The Optimist would like to correct statements made in Nicholas Wong’s Community Comment published on Friday, July 21. A quote attributed to Delta South MLA Ian Paton about redacting documents was taken out of context as Paton’s reference to redacted documents was specific to a project going to tender, at

which time the financial information is removed in order not to give any particular bidder an advantage. Paton also did not suggest that seismic upgrades proposed for the George Massey Tunnel were “prohibitively expensive.” The Optimist and Wong apologize for the errors in the column.

Delta South MLA says Clark’s resignation was unexpected

Ian Paton said it was unexpected. That’s how the Delta South MLA described the situation when the Liberal caucus was informed its party leader and former premier Christy Clark would be resigning effective Aug. 4. Clark broke the news to her colleagues at a retreat in Penticton before going public in a prepared media statement last Friday morning. She will also be stepping down as MLA for Kelowna-West. “I think she sat down and discussed things with her family and made the decision at our caucus retreat,” said Paton.

“We were all very disappointed that Christy Clark chose to step down as leader of our party, but we were all very united and thankful for the wonderful work that she has done for the past six years to put this province in such excellent economic shape. When we left Penticton we were very united as a caucus that we will continue to work hard to keep up the good work and press forward with all our ideas and be a very tough opposition.” Prior to leaving the retreat, the caucus also appointed Langley East MLA Rich Coleman as interim caucus leader. Liberal Party president Sharon White said in a statement the party has 28

days to decide how a leadership vote will take place. Clark was the province’s 35th premier, but her sixyear tenure came to an end when her minority government lost a confidence vote in late June, which brought an end to 16 years of Liberal rule in B.C. “I love our party and our province with all my heart – and it’s been the honour of a lifetime to serve as leader and premier,” said Clark. “Together we have achieved so much — winning a comeback election victory that almost nobody thought possible, positioning British Columbia firmly as Canada’s leading economy, and laying a strong foundation for future generations

to achieve their dreams here. I’m excited to see the renewed engagement that will strengthen and energize our party as we chose the next leader.” When Clark officially resigns this Friday, it will drop the Liberal seat total in the legislature to 42. The NDP minority government has 41, but it has the support of the Green’s threemember caucus. NDP Premier John Horgan is expected to recall the legislature in early September. He has six months to call a by-election to fill the soon to be vacant seat in the riding of KelownaWest. He has not indicated when he will call that byelection.

Homeowner in Tsawwassen interrupts weekend break-in

Delta police are reminding homeowners to keep their doors and windows secured after an overnight break and enter in Tsawwassen last weekend. According to police, an unknown male entered a home in the 4900-block of 3rd Avenue in Tsawwassen at approximately 10:25 p.m. last Saturday. “The suspect was confronted by the homeowner in an upstairs bedroom. The suspect then went

downstairs and fled not long after,” said police in a news release. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 6” tall, medium to heavy build, wearing a hat, dark pants and a dark hoodie. Nothing appears to have been stolen from the home. Police continue to investigate and are actively canvassing neighbours. Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in

the area around the time of the break and enter is asked to call police at 604946-4411. Police are also reminding the public to keep doors and windows secured, despite the increasing temperatures expected this week. OWL is caring for birds displaced by wildfires

Hawks, falcon and owls rescued from fire zone Delta’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) is doing its part to aid the wildlife displaced in B.C.’s wildfire zones. In the past week, OWL has taken in several baby sharp-skinned hawks that were rescued near Williams Lake, a young falcon known as Merlin and a nest of young saw-whet owls. “We also have some, like the owls, that we took in before the fires started, but we can’t send back given the wildfire conditions,” said OWL spokesperson Rob Hope. “The birds were young and orphaned. The sharp-skinned hawks were rescued by a firefighter, taken to Quesnel and then shipped to us.” Hope said staff are caring for the birds, which are all putting on weight and recovering from any injuries they incurred in the fire zone. “Merlin was actually rescued near 100 Mile House with the help of CDART, which is the animal rescue group that helps rescue animals out of evacuation zones, so their volunteers got Merlin to us,” said Hope. “We probably have gotten just a drop in the bucket. Anything that is young or that couldn’t run or fly

probably was lost in the fires. The adults would have been able to take off.” Delta sends more firefighters The Corporation of Delta has increased its presence in Central B.C. in an effort to battle the devastating wildfire situation. Last Thursday morning, Delta Fire & Emergency Services, at the request of the Office of the Fire Commissioner, sent six more Delta firefighters along with a fire truck, which are staged for deployment at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus in Kelowna. This is in addition to the 15-plus Delta fire, police and corporate staff who have been in the Central Okanagan for the last 20 days assisting with emergency operation centres and evacuation orders. “The situation across British Columbia right now is very tragic,” said Mayor Lois Jackson in a news release. “On behalf of Delta council, I want to further extend our thoughts, prayers and best wishes to all the brave staff and first responders, as well as all those affected by the fires.” In recent weeks, Delta has opened up community centre parking lots to allow fire evacuees to park their RVs and access services at the community centres.

He loves to chase after balls and often goes on walk-a-bouts in their Holly Park Drive neighbourhood, sometimes ending up in the community garden across the street from their home. After calling for him Friday night with no luck, a gentleman drove up to their house with Bunker about 20 minutes later. “Bunker always has a collar, tag and is licensed. When he drove up and told us what happened and we saw that Bunker was in shock with his broken leg dangling we just couldn’t believe it,” Atkinson recalled. “Our regular vet is away, so we are dealing with the emergency hospital. Spires using run to give back to sports

Tsawwassenite training to run 160 kilometres, from Vancouver to Pemberton, to benefit KidSport DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Tsawwassen’s Hilary Spires is planning on tackling a 160-kilometre run from Vancouver to Pemberton in under 24 hours next month to raise money to help kids play sports. Sports have been a huge part of her life, she said, noting they’re the basis of what makes her happy and have also opened up opportunities for things like school. “Since they’ve given so much to me, I wanted a way to give back,” she said. Spires, 31, played many sports growing up in Tsawwassen and went on to have a collegiate hockey career, spending two seasons at St. Cloud State in Minnesota and then playing for the UBC Thunderbirds. Spires, who works as a sales rep for a pet food company, eventually got into long distance running. Training has been going well and she’s confident she’ll be able to finish her

fundraising run. Finishing in under 24 hours could be tough, however, she said, adding that pacing is a big part of her strategy along with keeping fueled and hydrated. “I have a little crew that’s going to come,” she said, noting some people will run parts of the route with her. Spires said she likes the mental battle that comes with distance running. “You go into some dark places. If you’re running for eight or nine hours, you totally ebb and flow. So you’ll have times when you go, ‘This is amazing. I love this.’ Then suddenly it’s, ‘What am I doing? Everything hurts.’” Spires has a goal of raising $10,000. She’s raised about $4,000 so far. Proceeds will go to KidSport Vancouver. KidSport was created to help overcome financial obstacles preventing young people from participating in organized sport. Murphy’s Law

TED MURPHY

’m not convinced we’ll see another provincial election in short order, but if we do, Christy Clark just gave the Liberals the upper hand. The NDP’s tenuous grip on power has spurred speculation that British Columbians could go back to the polls in the near future, which up until last Friday would have likely resulted in a movie that we’ve all seen before. When you’ve got the same leaders shopping largely the same platforms, it’s not inconceivable to think the outcome would also be very similar. New Premier John Horgan can quickly put his stamp on government so the NDP has the ability to modify voter perception to some extent in the coming months, but the other two parties can only do so much at this time, meaning a snap election also has the potential to be a status quo election. That all changed last Friday when the former premier announced that she’d be stepping down as Liberal leader at the end of this week. Clark’s decision leaves a void at the helm of the party that ruled this province for the past 16 years, but it also paves the way for voteinducing change. I’m not suggesting Clark was the sole reason the Liberals failed to win a fifth straight majority in May, but a change at the top, particularly if it comes after a leadership race, can breathe new life into a party, both internally and externally. And it wouldn’t take much of a bump in Liberal support at the ballot box for the party’s fortunes to change dramatically. Given all of the above, and given the NDP had been relegated to the opposition benches for so long, I can’t think Horgan will want to do anything to jeopardize his hold on power. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver also knows his sphere of influence diminishes considerably should one of the other two parties form a majority, so he’s unlikely to rock the boat either. It’s in the best interests of both of them to make sure their alliance works for as long as possible because a Liberal party led by Todd Stone, Dianne Watts or a handful of others could prove to be too much to handle in the next election. Having said that, when you’ve got a razor thin margin everything can go sideways in an instant, regardless of how hard the captain tries to keep an even keel.

Many are retiring to Delta where the weather is better and housing costs are slightly lower than the big city. If you always lived in a house and are planning to buy or rent a condo, there are a few things to consider. B.C.’s Strata Property Act, previously called the Condominium Act, is a basic set of rules that all strata councils must abide by. Every new multi-housing development starts out with this basic set of rules in place. Once the owners start moving in, they form a strata council that can add more bylaws specific to their strata. A property management company may be hired to administrate the strata’s business but the strata council members (owners) are the primary decision makers. For example: The act has no rules about pets. If you are moving into a new building with a pet, you are grand-fathered to keep that pet for its lifetime, even if they change the rules to a no pet policy. This is just one reason why you might want to be part of a strata council, to have a say in what rules will be put forward for ratification by the owners. Think of it like a mini-government that can have both conservatives and liberals vying for power. Democracy can be difficult when you mix

inexperienced folks with controlling types. Then again, like in the real world, if you don’t vote, you shouldn’t get to complain. The main advantage of owning is the security of knowing you won’t be evicted. As an owner you must abide by the strata’s bylaws, pay your monthly maintenance fees and hopefully volunteer in the governance of the strata or its sub-committees. As a renter, you no longer have to pay for repairs, unless you caused the damage. If you need something fixed, you only need to communicate with the owner of your unit or the building manager. You can enjoy the amenities in the building without paying strata fees or getting involved in the internal politics of the strata council. If you can afford to pay the rent and follow the rules, you should have less stress as a tenant, but also less security of tenure in case

the owner decides to sell or move into their unit. Other considerations: If you are in a high rise, how many floors are you able to walk up in case the elevator(s) break, or floors to walk down in case of fire? If you can no longer drive, are you close to transit or in walking distance of shops? Would you actually use the building’s amenities such as a pool or fitness centre? Those perks can add a lot to your monthly strata fees or rent. You need to consider the age of the building. Older buildings are going to require more maintenance. If they were not financially well managed, it could result in an unexpected assessment to each owner of tens of thousands of dollars. Before buying, make sure you read the strata council’s minutes for the past three years, or at least talk to some of the people living there about issues, like the contingency fund, age of the roof, water problems and the building’s envelope. Moving is also a big undertaking. Aging-in-place in your current home might be preferred, especially if you consider sharing with a friend, or caregivers if you later need help. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Main street should reflect community’s personality Editor: Re: Town Centre plan almost ready to return, July 26 I’m glad to see Century Group is coming forward with plans for the heart of our Tsawwassen, but it would be nice to see it build a better block than what is proposed. I know it can. With input from a community that cares, we don’t have to make 56th street feel like an overcrowded funnel to the tunnel. Tsawwassen is relaxed. When you turn off the highway onto 56th Street, you know you can slow down and breath

deep. Sunny Tsawwassen, where the community shines along with our big sunny sky view. Building up to six storeys, with condos above commercial space, is a great idea, but building or approving anything before a master plan is fully designed seems foolhardy and short-sighted. Starting with a six-storey building that butts up to 56th Street, shading the setting sun forever, is perhaps not the best way to start. Tsawwassen’s main street should reflect what we are. We are Sunny Tsawwassen. Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall should do the same and be built

and designed to welcome visitors and our greater community. It should be built to serve more than its residents above or within a short walking distance. Build it with vision that includes a reason for people to want to come. Build it with more than just shops and cafes, more than doctors and dentists, more than offices. Build it with more in mind, build it with a reason to come. Let’s help them build a better block and Keep It Sunny Tsawwassen. Would you like to be part of a group to help build a sunny tomorrow? Not much seen in marshes anymore Editor: Ladner has an incredible asset in the South Arm Marshes wildlife management area that runs west from Ferry Road at Deas Slough to River Road. I walk the length of Ferry Road and have been shocked to witness a magnificent asset filled with every kind of waterfowl and small critters just four months ago to one which today seems almost completely devoid of any kind of wildlife. I worry that something has happened to kill off or scare off all of our wildlife in a matter of just a few months. At a time when this area

should be attractive to wildlife being displaced by all the construction nearby, one has to wonder why these birds and small animals do not seem interested at all. Where have they gone? The waterways used to be filled with every kind of duck imaginable and I have not seen a single duck for several months. The sum total of my sightings in the past four months are a couple of squirrells, a couple of bunnies and a garter snake. I believe this is an asset of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and National Resources and Delta should contact it to try and

figure out what kind of a problem, if any, exists with this wonderful asset. I have noticed many people still consider the area a garbage dump and may well be putting contaminated waste in there. Workers cleaning up after windstorms simply cut up the large fallen cottonwood trees and rolled or threw them in there as well. It is true these are biodegradable, but let’s be honest with the giant size of these it will take hundreds of years to degrade and, in my opinion, they should be removed and disposed of properly. Don German

Stick with the plan and replace tunnel Editor: I have read again and again the ongoing debate on the George Massey Tunnel replacement. I agree with Mayor Lois Jackson 100 per cent on everything she had to say recently. The tunnel is a nightmare for anyone commuting on a daily basis as well as at many other times of the day now. We have covered this ground so many times we

need to stick with the plan, not more studies while thousands of motorists get caught up in gridlock daily. To the self-serving mayor of Richmond who refuses to consider anyone but himself and his city, and who panders to certain groups, everyone’s voice should be heard, including Delta’s mayor and CAO George Harvie. To Douglas George Massey, who wants global

experts to be consulted and an aging, dangerous crossing saved, I can see why you want to keep a legacy but it is no longer a viable crossing as it was when built. Let’s speed up the process, not slow it down, because we need that bridge as soon as possible. Let’s get on with it and quit wasting time covering the same old ground over and over. Carol Turner

Well trained dogs not exempt from bylaw Editor: Re: Dog posed absolutely no threat to cyclist, letter to the editor, July 26 I would like to point out that the signs along the dike read: All dogs must be on a leash. The signs, and the

bylaws, do not include an exemption for “well trained dogs.” I had a near collision with an off-leash dog. Avoiding the dog caused me to crash my bike. The dog, and owner, came out all right, but I have a

shoulder that, according to my doctor, will never be 100 per cent again. So much for well trained dogs. Maybe the owners of these well trained dogs should go in for a bit of training also. Paul Voth

Owl puts on nightly show in the trees

Most nights lately, we will have a visitor. The visitor does not come knocking at the door. It does not arrive expecting a cup of tea or a glass of chardonnay. It appears in the trees in the park behind the house. It will be early evening. We will have just finished dinner. We will have retrieved sweatshirts, given that the sun will be back of the roofline. The air will be still. The cracks of baseballs will be heard from the field across the way. “It’s back,” one of us will say quietly, pointing to a flicker of movement in the branches. “Up there. To the right of the telephone pole.” “Wow,” we’ll both say, our eyes in the trees. We haven’t a clue what kind of owl our visitor is, or if it’s male or female. We only know that it’s rather large, and seems to like

Gym club offers parkour clinic

Delta Gymnastics is offering an exclusive three-day parkour clinic next weekend. The clinic, for ages 15 and up, will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. from Aug. 12 to 14 and costs $67.50. Diane Steiner, summer community and outreach program coordinator for Delta Gymnastics, describes parkour as a natural method of training the body to efficiently go from point A to point B by making use of the environment that’s around at any given time. Delta Gymnastics has secured Tyler Chassie, a professional parkour athlete and instructor, to help lead the clinics. “There is no size, skill or

climbs, safety falls, flips and more. We will cover technique, progressions and strengthening exercises required to build the skill.”

Parkour’s popularity has exploded over the past few years. Those who practice it jump, climb, slide and roll their way over and across obstacles with incredible agility. “Parkour is for anyone of any age,” says Steiner. “All you need are a pair of shoes and some imagination. The possibilities are endless.” Delta Gymnastics is also offering the opportunity to learn how to coach parkour. A coaching clinic will be held on Aug. 12 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. It costs $25. Clinics will be held at the Delta Sport Development Centre in Ladner’s municipal precinct.

our company. The feeling is certainly mutual. Not so the crows, which follow the owl wherever it goes, scolding it for daring to enter their territory. When the owl arrives, so does the cacophony. Haven’t a clue whether our feathered friend shows up when the leaves begin to fall. No idea whether it’s around when the temperature dips and the rains begin. But then, we’re not out there looking when October arrives. The park will be in darkness, and the furnace will be humming. No idea if owls have an off season, or where they go if they do. “That’s six nights this week,” I said the other day. “Six nights. It seems to like that particular tree.” Indeed, it does. Or perhaps, just perhaps, it knows that we’re waiting and wants to place itself in view. Seldom does it stay for long. Not one to overstay its welcome, our friend will lift its magnificent wings and take off through the trees, no doubt to another branch in another part of the neighbourhood. “Look!” someone will whisper, pointing to the trees. And the show will begin again.

Fun in the sun throughout weekend Sun Festival features three days of activities, highlighted by Rotary parade on holiday Monday

The B.C. Day long weekend is almost upon us and in South Delta that means the Tsawwassen Sun Festival is just a few days away. “We have an amazing committee that’s working really hard to bring it all together. I think it’s going to be an amazing weekend, as usual,” says Sun Festival coordinator Elaine Campbell. The festival, which marks its 45th anniversary this year, begins Saturday, carries on through Sunday and has a fun-filled schedule planned for the holiday Monday, including a classic car show, Rotary Club of Tsawwassen parade down 56th Street, main stage entertainment and a Kid’s Funzone ($10 for an all-day pass) at Winskill Park. “It’s going to be fun,” she says. Drive-in movie returns

A drive-in movie night will once again be part of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival lineup. The throwback-style event was a new addition to last year’s festival and garnered a lot of positive feedback, says Sun Festival coordinator Elaine Campbell. “Everyone had a really good time. It was a great success and a fun, family event,” she says. The drive-in movie, set for Sunday at Beach Grove Elementary, is presented by the Rotary Club of

Tsawwassen. Pre-book free tickets online at www.sunfestdrivein.com. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie, Star Wars Rogue One, starts at dusk. Popcorn will be available, but for food moviegoers are encouraged to pack a picnic. There will also be a 50/50 draw with proceeds going towards the local Rotary Club’s community initiatives. Beach Grove Elementary is located at 5955-17A Ave.

and beer round set for the holiday Monday. Trophies, gift certificates, MVP prizes and beer will be awarded at the end of the tournament on Monday afternoon.

Talented youth will perform on mainstage in Winskill Monday

Local youth will be showcasing their talent at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival mainstage Monday. Delta’s Got Talent is a brand new addition to the annual event. “We’re really excited to showcase our talented youth in the community,” says Tsawwassen Sun Festival coordinator Elaine Campbell. Some fantastic auditions were sent in, says Delta’s Got Talent coordinator Jennifer Bach, noting there will be 13 entries performing in the competition’s finale Monday afternoon.

The majority of performers will be singer/ songwriters while there’s also a dance routine and a band, she adds. There will be a winner chosen in a 13 to 15 age group and another in the 16 to 19 age group. Skool Starz, a family entertainment company, is sponsoring the talent show. One grand prize winner will be awarded a CD

single artist recording of an original Skool Starz! song to be published and promoted on SkoolStarz. com, local radio stations and the media. “This local talent contest is a great opportunity to discover and showcase Delta’s finest talent and we are proud to support this event,” says Curtis Kendall Wong, president of Skool Starz Inc. Bach says performances are expected to start at approximately 2:45 p.m. on the mainstage.

Delta Tigers celebrate their 5-2 win over Richmond on Sunday for their second straight B.C. Baseball Bantam AAA 15U provincial title.

Tigers repeat as B.C. champs Bantam AAA baseball team book their ticket to New Jersey with big weekend in Richmond MARK BOOTH

The Delta Tigers are New Jersey bound after repeating as B.C. Baseball’s Bantam AAA 15U provincial champions. They capped a memorable four days at Blundell Park in Richmond with a 5-2 victory over the host Chuckers in Sunday afternoon’s gold medal game. That earns them the opportunity to represent B.C. at the Diamond Nation 16U Blue Chip Prospects Tournament in Flemington, slated for Aug.7-11. When the Tigers produced their first provincial title a year earlier, B.C. Baseball had yet to arrange a post tournament trip for the champion. That meant added motivation heading into the 2017 campaign, especially for the secondyear players. “Last year was sweet but we didn’t get to go anywhere. The big thing today was calming them down because I knew that’s all they had in their heads. I’m so excited for the kids,” beamed general manger and head coach Cam Frick. “This time next week we are getting on a plane and that’s awesome.” The Tigers’ trip back east was hardly a certainty heading into Sunday’s playoff round. Not only were the tournament’s top four seeds all still in contention, each of them had well-rested key pitchers after what proved to be a meaningless final day of round-robin play. The Tigers locked up a semi-final berth with wins over Victoria (12-2), Kelowna (8-4) and Vancouver (11-3). They dropped their final game to Chilliwack (8-4) and settled for second place in their pool. That set the stage for a semi-final showdown with season-long nemesis WestCoast Cardinals. The Maple Ridge team defeated Delta at the provincial qualifier two weeks earlier and also prevailed in the semi-final at the Richmond tournament back in May. On that day, the

Tigers’ bats were silenced by Cards’ ace Max Yuen who was looking to duplicate his performance. What the Tigers had going for them entering the playoff round was three outstanding second-year pitchers, led by ace Braedy Euerby who the Cards had not seen this season. The Ladner right-hander was up to the challenge in a huge way. He allowed no hits and struck out 10 in nearly six innings of work before reaching the maximum 95 pitches allowed. Connor MacIntosh came on to record the final four outs and a combined no-hitter in a 6-0

Ladner two sport standout Braedy Euerby was superb in the Delta Tigers 6-0 semifinal win over WestCoast, allowing no hits over nearly six innings and striking out 10. He also helped his own cause with a tworun homer. Euerby was recently shortlisted for the U16 Team B.C. hockey team.

Delta win. “Every team left in the semis had an ace but I thought we had the best pitcher in the province and the best number two and three guys as well and that showed today,” continued Frick. “The way Braedy pitched today. Oh my goodness. They had only one hard out. It was awesome.” The game was scoreless until the fourth when the Tigers squeezed a run home with a perfectly-executed bunt. They did the same in the fifth before Euerby capped his brilliant outing with a two-run homer in the top of seventh. Two more insurance runs followed. “I felt really confident on the mound. I had all my off speed pitches on and that was good. The team was really into it which got me up even more as well,” said Euerby. “Once I put that home run over the fence it just topped everything off.” The final was also a tight affair with the Tigers laying down more key bunts to help erase a 2-1 deficit. MacIntosh was terrific on the mound before making way for Noah Thomas who closed out the win. “In big games like provincials, teams get nervous on defence and being able to bunt is a huge thing,” added Frick. “Definitely it’s something we have worked on in practice and, earlier this week, we told them we had to be better bunting. We didn’t lay one down in the provincial qualifier and this morning alone we laid down six. It was huge.” The Tigers have now won two B.C. Baseball titles in their brief three-year history. The roster also features: Jakob Wegner, Tommy Richards, Ryan McCarthy, Boston Warkentin, Luke Siemens, Connor Olesen, Jordan Bach, Sean Heppner, Carter Spencer and Declan Forbes. Joining Frick on the coaching staff are Dirk Van Ommen, Ford Marcotte, and Jess Burns, along with graduate assistants Payton DeLuca, Michael Tersigni and Caleb Cassie.

Jr. nationals next for B.C. lawn bowl champ

Delta 2001 Heat will host the upcoming nationals as B.C. champions after their perfect run at Softball City. The Canadian Championships take place Aug. 9-13 in North Delta and Tsawwassen.

2001 Heat are B.C. champs

Five years of hard work and determination have paid off in a big way for the Delta Heat 2001 fastpitch team. The girls are 2017 provincial “A” champions following an impressive three-day run at Softball City in South Surrey. The Heat produced five straight victories, including a 6-3 triumph over longtime rival Surrey ’01 Storm in the gold medal game. “We went into this tournament wanting to beat every team who crossed our path, and that’s what we did,” said shortstop Jessie Weststrate. “We all had a championship mindset and because of that, we became champions.” Delta began to build momentum with round-robin wins over the White Rock Renegades and Surrey Storm. The playoffs began with a hard-

fought quarter-final battle with the Fraser Valley ’01 Fusion, winning 6-2. Next was a heavyweight clash with the the Victoria ’01 Devils — the top seed entering the playoff round. A home run from pitcher Kianna Jones powered Delta to another 6-2 victory and a direct trip to the championship game. “There was definitely a lot of superstition the whole weekend,” said catcher, Liv Malesku. “Some girls didn’t wash their jersey the whole weekend and ate the same thing every day, but it ended up working out.” In the final, the teams exchanged runs in the opening inning and the game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 into the fourth. That’s when third baseman Gabby Dorval came through with a clutch hit with the bases loaded, scoring three runs.

The Storm came back to make it 4-3 before the Heat scored a pair of valuable insurance runs to wrap up the win. The team is comprised of a talented group that gave 110 percent every game. The effort of all 13 players, along with the countless hours their coaches offer, was the recipe for success. The Heat will be right at home for the upcoming U16 National Championships, slated for Aug. 9-13 at North Delta Community Park and Brandrith Park in Tsawwassen. The Delta roster also includes: Emily Horne, Aymee Godmaire, Amy De Ste Croix, Hanna Hansen, Rawnie Weststrate, Veronica Sawatzky, Maya Gauley, Megan Hendrickson and Stephanie Schina. The girls are coached by Bill Olexa, Bob Houtman, Doug Harris, Francais Olexa, and Tory Cardinal.

Recently-crowned provincial junior champion Emma Boyd is celebrating her 17th birthday in Nova Scotia this week at the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships. The member of the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club earned her second B.C. Junior title in Victoria. Now she heads across the country looking to be on the national podium for the first time. Boyd was fifth in her Junior Nationals debut two years ago. She was fourth at last year’s event in North Vancouver — a result that earned her a spot on Team Canada’s 2017 national youth squad, as well as the national women’s development team. She has been training hard in preparation for this year’s championships that will take place at the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club. Meanwhile, Boyd’s coach and TLBC teammate After repeating as B.C. junior chamwill also be in pion, Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Dartmouth, club member Emma Boyd is looking looking for her for more success at the Canadian fourth consecuJunior Championships in Nova tive national Scotia this week. National senior team member Pricilla Westlake won the women’s singles title earlier this year at the World Youth event — the biggest achievement of her already decorated career. Her focus now is on the opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage once again.

The ability to accurately understand spoken words is called “speech comprehension.” It’s a complex process involving several areas in the brain – and most importantly – our hearing.
