It was quite a night of basketball action and high school spirit at a packed DSS gym as the Delta Pacers and South Delta Sun Devils senior teams squared off in their annual rivalry games. The Pacers repeated as girls champions while the Sun Devils took the boys title for the first time in seven years. For coverage see Page 19.

Council backtracking on bylaw

Delta council is backtracking from sweeping zoning changes that drew the ire of homeowners, particularly those in North Delta. On Monday, a week after a sometimes heated public hear-

ing at city hall, civic politicians agreed to have staff come back with another report looking at potential revisions. To address a growing number of street parking complaints, Delta proposed regulations to govern secondary suites, including lots being at least 15 metres (49 feet) wide in order to contain

a suite. Also in the bylaw, secondary suite parking would not be permitted within a front yard but only on the side or back. The lot width part of the zoning bylaw could remain unchanged, but staff has been asked to review the parking requirements. Coun. Ian Paton agreed with

his colleagues that alternatives should be explored, including allowing parking in front, noting homes throughout Delta that could have much-needed secondary suites are prevented from doing so due to the requirements. Delta could also examine such options as parking permits, said Paton.

“I can tell you from experience 20 years ago, if you pick up our local newspaper, the Optimist, you’d always see seven or eight basement suites for rent in every issue of the paper and three or four apartments for rent. You see none of that anymore, they just don’t exist,” he said. DELTA: see Page 3
