Firefighter makes dash in support of Children’s Hospital PHOTO BY ADRIAN MCNAIR

Delta firefighter Reid Taylor completed his Run Rich Run Challenge on Sunday at the Ladner fire hall, running the 40-yard dash in full firefighter turnout gear in a time of 5.61, slightly slower than last year’s time of 5.53. Taylor raised $6,700 for BC Children’s Hospital, which is more than double the total of last year’s inaugural run. He said the event went well and hopefully will be even bigger next year. The run is inspired by NFL Network’s Rich Eisen who runs in his suit and tie at the NFL player scouting combine in support of St. Jude’s Hospital.

Strategy to make 56th St. safer Three pedestrians have been killed since 2014 IAN JACQUES

Following several fatal and near-fatal pedestrian accidents in Tsawwassen, the Delta Police Department is developing a pedestrian safety strategy for the 56th Street corridor. The strategy will include the City of Delta and ICBC and will involve engineering, education and enforcement to reduce pedestrian collisions along Tsawwassen’s busiest road. Chief Neil Dubord presented a

report to the Delta police board outlining the strategy. According to the report, from 2014 to 2017, DPD responded to 34 pedestrian collisions, four of which were fatal. Three of the four fatal pedestrian collisions occurred along the 56th Street corridor in Tsawwassen; seniors were the victims in all incidents. “There are no discernable trends in pedestrian collisions in North Delta, while in Ladner, Ladner Trunk Road is the roadway with the majority of collisions,” the report states.

“Tsawwassen’s population is particularly vulnerable regarding pedestrian safety, due to the aging demographic.” The DPD report was modelled after a City of Vancouver study in 2012 which saw a significant reduction in pedestrian collisions after LED lights were installed at a busy intersection. The Vancouver study also outlined other pedestrian safety modifications. ICBC has helped fund many of the improvements Vancouver has undertaken. PEDESTRIAN: see Page 3
