Crime concerns with casino Richmond raises the issue, but Delta doesn’t buy neighbour’s worries SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta has a very different view than Richmond when it comes to crime that could result from Gateway’s proposed casino complex in Ladner. A City of Richmond staff report lists a series of concerns, including a potential increase in overall crime and the movement of currency in and out of the facility. When it comes to street level crime, a letter to Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie from Delta Mayor Lois Jackson notes, “Correlating the presence of a casino in Delta to crime rates in Richmond would be similar to Delta attributing crime in South Delta to attractors in Richmond such as McArthurGlen mall which is currently expanding, Ironwood shopping centre or the Cineplex movie theatre. This is not an equal comparison whatsoever.” Jackson also noted Delta police do not expect the proposed casino to be a significant impact on police resources in Delta or any other community. A report by the B.C. Lottery Corporation notes most casinos in the province manage their problems effectively within the confines of the establishment, so there’s no reason to believe the proposed

A City of Richmond report raised concerns over a potential increase in crime in that city should Gateway’s Ladner casino proposal get approval. Delta facility would operate any differently. Richmond doesn’t appear convinced, however. “Based on the review and discussion, Richmond RCMP is of the opinion that an additional gaming facility, with the movement of currency in and out of the casino, may potentially lead to an increase in overall crime,” the Richmond report states. “Crimes such as impaired driving and robbery may increase due to a spillover effect on Richmond, which may
generate a need for additional police resources in Richmond.” Richmond also raised concerns over money laundering, although acknowledged that issue is handled at a regional level through integrated policing teams, resulting in minimal impact to policing in Richmond. Gateway CAO Jag Nijjar told a Delta multi-civic committee session earlier this year that his company has “zero tolerance for any criminal activity” and that the Delta casino would have over 120 security and
surveillance staff as well as hundreds of cameras. He also explained the measures in place to make sure criminals don’t try to use the casino and that further measures are coming following a review by the province. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord noted he doesn’t have concern about an increase in crime and said the RCMP’s integrated illicit gambling team has a good handle when it comes to organized crime trying to launder money. He said the biggest concern from a Delta police
standpoint would be “traffic, traffic, traffic.” Described as a “modest-sized” casino, the proposed gaming facility at the Delta Town & Country Inn site would be much smaller than Richmond’s lucrative River Rock Casino Resort. The Delta casino would start off with 500 slots as well as 24 gaming tables and up to six e-tables. After six months a review would take place. A public hearing on the proposal will take place May 1 at the Ladner Community Centre.
District acknowledges new track surface is not ‘ideal’
CONTINUED from Page 1 “The board views tracks located on school properties as an integral part of our school athletics programs and extra-curricular activities. We know that these tracks also provide opportunities for conditioning for local sports teams and are an essential foundation for healthy communities — we too would very much like to
see them resurfaced for optimal use by all,” she said. The district notes the conversation about further upgrades to the SDSS track continues with district staff, trustees and all levels of government. Dixon said this week’s repair work ensures students and the community can continue to use the track in the interim.

“We have been concerned about the declining condition of the facility for some time and have been conducting meetings with all levels of government to seek partnerships to fund a resurfacing of the track,” said Dixon. “While the asphalt surfacing will allow for continued use of the track for school purposes, we recognize that this surfacing is not ideal
which is regrettable.” Hoping to utilize new provincial funding to replace shabby tracks, the board last fall approached the city about what it would take to bring together all three levels of government and perhaps other funding partners. Trustees noted thousands of Delta residents would benefit from such facilities. At a parks, recreation
and culture commission meeting, representatives from the district outlined their study of track and sports field improvements at four secondary schools. Data was gathered to develop a draft plan and cost estimates. The commission was told the base project was estimated at $2.4 to $4 million with options pushing costs toward $6 million.

The City of Delta is warning residents about a recent data breach for users of the My Waste app used by residents for garbage reminders and recycling information. According to Delta, the breach does not include all users, only those that opted to receive marketing emails and updates from Recycle Coach and My

Metro board set to review pay hike
Following public scrutiny and backlash from fellow politicians, the Metro Vancouver board will vote later this week on whether to move forward on a motion that gave directors a pay adjustment and a retirement allowance. Late last month the board voted in favour of essentially giving a cash payout to board mem-
bers who lose this fall or decide not to run for re-election. The payout, which would give sitting members 10.2 per cent of their income for every year of service, was retroactive to 2007. The board also voted to increase pay for directors by 15 per cent to offset changes in the recent federal budget that would see
some of the compensation civic politicians receive become taxable income. The move was intended to keep take-home pay at the same level. The Metro board of directors meets Friday when it will revisit the issue. If two-thirds of the board agree, the original remuneration bylaw will be defeated.
Another delay in Tsaw. manslaughter case
A South Delta manslaughter case has been adjourned for another three weeks to allow the defence more time to review evidence. This is the second adjournment of the case in the past month. Franco Douglas Sarra,
20, a graduate of South Delta Secondary now residing in Burnaby, did not appear in a Surrey courtroom Thursday morning, but his legal counsel Garen ArnetZargarian asked the court once again for more time to review disclosure in
the case. The request was granted with a next appearance set for May 10. Sarra is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of Russ Armfelt, 53, outside the Rose and Crown Pub in Tsawwassen in December 2016.

They decided the theme of “community and how you can get involved” would be a great way to inspire future leaders. “The speakers we recruited based their speeches off of this theme in the hopes of encouraging the elementary school students to take action of their own and accomplish goals they set for themselves,” added Lord. One of the speakers was Stephen O’Keefe, who despite being born profoundly deaf has overcome numerous obstacles to become an accomplished entrepreneur and a humourous keynote speaker. Liberal leader critical of health tax on local visit IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The government seems oblivious to the people that will be hurt by its new tax. That’s how B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson described the NDPs employer health tax during a visit to South Delta last Friday. Wilkinson, and Delta South MLA Ian Paton met with management and staff at Sonic Enclosures Ltd. in the Tilbury Industrial Park to tour the facility and get a sense of how the new tax will impact the business. Matei Ghelesel, president and COO of Sonic Enclosures, said the tax will mean about a $50,000 hit to his bottom line. “We employee almost 60 people full-time. Our payroll last year was in the order of $2 million, so when the new tax gets implemented it’s going to hurt,” Ghelesel said. “That money has to be made up elsewhere in the operation.” Ghelesel said he feels left behind by government.

B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson (left) chats with Matei Ghelesel, president and COO of Sonic Enclosures Ltd., and Delta South MLA Ian Paton. “Our business is hard to compete in, so our margins are important,” he said. “We need help to be more price competitive. We don’t need extra fees to weigh us down and make sales harder than it already is.” The NDPs recent budget included the elimination of Medical Services Plan premiums by 2020 to be replaced by an employer health tax. The change will be phased in with MSP premiums being cut by 50 per cent in 2019 and eliminated entirely the following year.
“This is exactly what we don’t want and what government should be trying to avoid,” Wilkinson told the Optimist. “Instead the NDP are just recklessly imposing taxes that will dramatically affect our competitiveness.” Paton said the tax will hurt all sizes of operations, even non-profits. “We are so fortunate to have an industrial base here in South Delta. We don’t want to see companies leave. We want them to thrive, but this tax does exactly the opposite of that.”

Murphy’s Law

’ve got to wonder whether enforcement will be enough. When the Delta Police Department released a list last week of the 10 worst areas for collisions over the past three years, Nordel Way absolutely stole the show. It was so prominent, in fact, the police department had to combine areas of the Alex Fraser Bridge artery so other locations in Delta could also be included on the list. How bad is it? Well, Nordel Way only intersects with five streets between the Highway 91 interchange and where it crosses Scott Road, yet four of them made the ignominious list, which is topped by the hilly portion of Nordel Way just east of the bridge and where it connects with the highway. The vast majority of collisions are the result of driver error, caused by someone going too fast or not paying attention or doing something utterly stupid, so it makes sense that the more police are able to crack down on dangerous drivers, the safer that stretch of road will become, however, I’ve got to wonder if modifying behaviour one ticket at a time will be enough. Are there broad brush changes that would affect all drivers that might also help reduce the number of crashes? Barriers have already been installed down the middle and there’s not much that can be done about the topography, so what about taking a look at the speed limit? The 60 km/h posted limit suggests to drivers, perhaps even subconsciously, that it’s not your typical city street, but rather one that’s set up for vehicles to travel faster, and anyone who has driven down the NorDel hill knows many drivers take that notion to heart. Given the number of collisions, perhaps the speed limit is set too high. What about directional signage earlier for those heading west? I imagine much of the traffic is familiar with what awaits them at the bottom, but knowing what lane you need to be in earlier would prevent some drivers from having the unenviable task of trying to switch lanes while vehicles all around them are barrelling down the hill and around the bend. I suspect there are all kinds of modifications that could be undertaken to make Nordel Way safer, so city officials should look beyond an increased police presence to address what’s clearly the black eye of Delta’s road network.
First past the post is a terrible system, except for all others
A
s the discussion about changing our voting system heats up, that our democracy is somehow not working, I looked up Winston Churchill’s famous quote about democracy being the worst form of government. As usual with quotes, it’s taken out of context. The full quote is: “Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” The main point of democracy is the will of the people and majority rule. In a multi-party system, an absolute majority is typically difficult to achieve, therefore the calls for changing the voting system usually come from the people who don’t win. Democracy is about compromise. Where many tend to fall short is understanding that compromise also rests with those who are governed. There are some that will not be governed by the party or person they voted for. I guess that’s Churchill’s point about it being the worst form of government. I think a perfect example of this is what’s going on in B.C. right now.
Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN
We are not being governed by the party that received the most votes, nor the most seats. Instead we are being led by a party that has only three seats. For every issue that arises, it’s a question of whether the Greens agree with it or not, because they hold the balance of power. The Kinder Morgan issue is being driven by this notion as well. Regardless of which side you are on the issue, my concern is the government’s ability to enact policies that are truly supported by the majority of the people. You know, the folks for whom democracy is supposed to work. So, let’s fast forward to the next election, after we have enacted some system of voting. There are now eight different parties vying for election, and all they need to do is generate enough interest province-wide to garner a single seat in the legislature.
I’m sure many of those who want a new system are thinking they’ll still be just three main choices. Think again. Every action has a reaction, and an onslaught of new parties, with all sorts of varying and extreme views, will show up. Now, two or three of these people, who do not come near representing the views of the majority or even a large minority of the population, end up with the balance of power. Ready to vote down the government on a whim. They, in essence, are controlling the direction of the province. Is that really what we are looking for? Maybe that won’t happen, but lots of people know how to game a system. Once the genie is out of the bottle, it’s pretty hard to get him back in. Political parties by nature are a compromise between the various views of its members. And if my choice for government doesn’t win, it’s a compromise I have to, and am prepared to, live with. First past the post may not be perfect, but it seems better than all other forms. Both pipeline sides not presented Editor: Re: Pipeline dispute creates divide that will be impossible to cross, Community Comment, April 20 Nicholas Wong argues that in the context of the Kinder Morgan pipeline debate characterizing others with different opinions creates a greater divide amongst people and points out both sides seem to claim moral righteousness on the issue. He even quotes the great Russian
dissonant and Nobel Prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to support his argument — the line between good and evil runs through every human heart. However, upon closer examination of his column, it is quite evident he does not support the Kinder Morgan pipeline and has little or no desire to present both sides of the argument. He mentions a recent, large oil spill in China, insinuates the
Alberta government has exaggerated the number of jobs building the pipeline will create and therefore the economic gains for Canadians, characterized Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as running roughshod over B.C. and its people, and implied Kinder Morgan is only in it for the money. In the last part of his column he waxes philosophical on the importance of truth and moral-
ity. Solzhenitsyn also said: the simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. One word of truth outweighs the world. By failing to present both sides of the argument does not Wong debase his inferred claim of moral righteousness, and, like Solzhenitsyn says, perpetuate a lie? Perhaps he needs to have the courage of Solzhenitsyn to present “one word of truth.” Dale Wallace
Hospital visitor stunned she didn’t have to pay to park
Editor: My husband and I had the pleasure of watching Mayor Lois Jackson’s excellent speech to the Delta Chamber of Commerce on TV. Throughout the speech I kept thinking of how unflinching Jackson has been in standing up for
Delta over the years and how hard her shoes are going to be to fill. I remember her telling Premier Gordon Campbell to “keep your hands off Delta Hospital.” Thank goodness she prevailed and he was unsuccessful. This brings to mind an encounter I had in the
parking lot of said hospital a few months ago. I was heading in to peruse the gift shop when a young woman asked me where the parking machine was so she could pay. I told her it was free. She was stunned and said she had never heard of that before. I told her our mayor and
council decided that people who have loved ones in hospital have enough stress without having to worry about expensive parking and plugging a meter. She said to me, “That is so refreshing.” It made her day and mine too. Rose Meyer
Residents should be outraged at tax breaks for casino
Editor: The opinion poll on the Optimist website asks if the proposed casino should get a tax break. As of last Friday morning, 85 per cent were opposed to the idea. Thank goodness some people are paying attention. I was astounded to
learn via your paper that Gateway could receive over $700,000 in property tax and permit fee savings for its casino project. Surely all Delta residents should be outraged at this offer, especially for a proponent that is in business to make money from other people’s losses from
gambling. Being Gateway is a private company, we do not even have information on who owns it. It would be dandy if Delta gave its residents a tax savings for a change. I urge readers to take some time and write to Delta council by May 1
and say no to the casino. We will gain very little from having it here from what I can see. While a new or remodelled hotel would be nice, especially if tennis courts are maintained, surely this does not have to come with a casino. Jean Wightman
No political messages
Editor: The electronic boards presently most prominently in place at the Highway 17A and Ladner Trunk Road intersection as well as that displayed at the Ladner Leisure Centre desk are clearly expected to be used for communicating in a nonpartisan way with the citizens of Delta. Delta council, which is the very body that should ensure the boards are used for the proper purposes, violates this principle. The electronic boards, in part, display a message that states, “We need a bridge.” That is incorrect. We need a crossing, but the need for a bridge is
inconclusive at best. That same display states this issue (the bridge) is too important to be “political and is filled with misinformation.” It then immediately violates that very position by displaying political and inaccurate information as fact. It pushes points and positions that are definitely not supported by independent study. Council’s use of these publicly financed boards to distribute partisan and inaccurate information for political purposes is an abuse of its position and the trust put in it by the voting public. Harv Thibault
System needs to evolve Editor: Re: Cooperation & respect needed, but PR not the way to get there, letter to the editor, April 20 Following the talking points of the no side, Taylor Grant brings up the bogey man of extremism in his effort to scare voters into staying with a patently unfair electoral system. In the last election, fewer than one per cent of voters supported a non-mainline party, hardly enough to win a seat, especially if
thresholds are in place. In sticking with the dysfunctional first past the post system, Grant would deny the vote to anyone he disagreed with. At one time, women, Asians, Indigenous peoples and non-land holders were all denied the right to participate in electing representatives. Our democracy has evolved to recognize the contributions of these groups. It’s time to continue to evolve. Daryl Sturdy

Eighteen Delta elementary schools battled it out question for question Thursday at South Park Elementary in the finals of the Reading Link Challenge. team consisting of Mary Neufeld, Noella Yang, Sophia Barber, Eileen Cia, Ella Li and Talan TaylorHunt bested 17 other Delta schools to win this year’s Delta-wide Reading Link Challenge finals at South Park Elementary Thursday. The team will now represent Delta at the Fraser Valley Community Challenge to be held today at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The final morning of competition brought together 108 students in grades 4 and 5 from all 18 Delta elementary schools. Each school held its own competition to determine a team of six to send to the finals. Reading Link Challenge is a province-wide program for students that pro-
motes the “sport” of reading. The program is run as a series of quiz/trivia challenges with winning teams advancing to higher levels of competition. Participants read six books and met to discuss each one, memorizing key facts and details. At the finals, judges posed a series of questions based on the chosen books, which this year included Masterpiece, The Mask That Sang, Fish in a Tree, After Peaches, The Incredible Twisting Arm and Erupts. The objectives of the competition are to introduce children to a wide variety of literature, to encourage children to participate in a group activity that requires teamwork and healthy competition, and to encourage children
to read for retention. The Reading Link Challenge has a storied history among school districts around North America. In the late 1930s, the Battle of the Books was a weekly radio show that used a quiz format to test children’s knowledge of good literature. The Battle of the Books program moved to a library setting in Michigan in 1993. It was used to encourage grade 4 and 5 students to have fun with reading. In 1996, a similar project was undertaken at Seattle Public Library. In 2002, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam libraries joined the challenge, and in 2004 the entire Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) came on board.

Poor oral health can affect a person’s quality of life Oral pain, missing teeth or oral infections can influence the way a person speaks, eats and socializes. These oral health problems can reduce a person’s quality of life by affecting their physical, mental and social well-being. The reality is that oral health problems could be a sign of something serious such as oral cancer. Every year approximately 3,200 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer and 1,050 deaths from oral cancer occur. This devastating disease has a low survival rate because it is often diagnosed very late. With early detection the survival rate of oral cancer can be greatly improved. This means going to your dentist for regular dental exams. Your dentist has the training and experience to detect oral cancer early. As part of a healthy lifestyle and to help reduce the risk of oral disease, follow CDA’s steps to good oral health. 1. Keep your mouth clean • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. • Wait at least 20–30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. • Floss every day. 2. Check your mouth regularly Look for signs of gum disease:
• Red, shiny, puffy, sore or sensitive gums. • Bleeding when you brush or floss • Bad breath that won’t go away
Look for signs of oral cancer: • Bleeding or open sores that don’t heal • White or red patches • Numbness or tingling

BARBARA GUNN
The other day, the husband caught me redhanded. We were at the drug store. We were there to pick up some shampoo, some batteries, some laundry detergent and some paper towels. I found something else. “Well, well, well,” said the husband, approaching me from behind. “What do we have here? Is that a magazine about Harry and Meghan you have in your hands?” I quickly placed it back in the rack. I wasn’t interested in the slightest, I told him. I’d been waiting for
him to fetch the batteries and the thing had just jumped out at me. What else was I to have done, for crying out loud? Just stand there, looking silly? “So you’re not at all interested in the royal wedding?” asked the husband. “No,” I said. “Not in the slightest.” OK. So I do know that it’s taking place on May 19, and that the service starts at noon. I do know that the nuptials will be held in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle and that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will take part in the ceremony, and that after it’s over, the royals will take a carriage ride through Windsor Town. That doesn’t mean I’m following it, or anything. The husband’s not convinced. A couple of weeks ago he wandered into the TV room when a special was airing. “Well, well, well,” said the husband. “Who can’t
get enough of these two?” “Will you stop it?” I said. “I was just surfing channels, and you happened to arrive when Meghan was on the screen. It wasn’t like I was planning to stay here. I was looking, oh, for a food channel that might give me new ideas for mac and cheese.” The husband nodded. “Sure you weren’t looking for something on crumpets and tea?” he asked. “Or maybe bangers and mash?” “You’re being silly again,” I told him. “But didn’t you tell me you know where the reception is?” he asked. “Sure,” I said. “It’s at St. George’s Hall after the carriage ride. And then Prince Charles is hosting a private evening reception.” “But you’re not interested?” the husband said. “No,” I said. “Not in the slightest.” Well, maybe, just maybe a little. I may just tune in for a bit of the day. Doesn’t make me a fan of the royals.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE 4 Types of Exercise Every Senior Needs
Endurance Endurance, or cardio, exercises improve heart health, lower blood pressure, and speed up metabolism. If you are just beginning to incorporate cardio exercises into your routine, it is best to start slowly (5-minute increments) and gradually add more time as your endurance builds. The goal is to increase your heart rate and breathing, but not to get so out of breath that you can’t carry on a conversation. If you reach this level, or experience any dizziness or pain, you are working too hard and should slow down to let yourself recover. Moderate endurance exercises: Brisk walking on a level surface, swimming, gardening or mowing the lawn, stationary cycling, Bicycling on a level surface Vigorous endurance exercises: Climbing stairs or hills, shovelling snow, brisk bicycling uphill, jogging
Balance Incorporating exercise that improves a senior’s balance could potentially be lifesaving. Improving balance will overall help a senior live a safer and more independent life, while giving their family members peace of mind. If you want to start incorporating any of these exercises into your weekly routine, be sure to check with your doctor beforehand to find out which exercises would be the safest for you. Try incorporating 10-minute sessions into your daily routine – doing strength exercises while your coffee brews in the morning, going for a walk after lunch, or doing stretches while your favourite show is on. These short-term fitness goals will allow you to start living a healthy, active lifestyle.

Here are some low-impact exercises that seniors should incorporate into their daily lives: endurance, balance, and flexibility. A mixture of these will help seniors remain healthy while also protecting them from injury.
Flexibility Maintaining flexibility as you age will provide more freedom of movement, allowing you to stay active longer. You should always stretch before doing endurance or strength exercises. You can also incorporate programs that specifically focus on flexibility. Some of your favourite hobbies, like golfing or gardening, help keep you flexible and strong as well.

More seniors are using computers and other forms of technology on a regular basis than ever before. Lots of seniors understand the basics of using a computer -- turning it on, navigating their way to Facebook, etc. -- but they’re totally lost when it comes to maintaining their device and staying safe online. Here are a few tips to help you have a better experience when online. 1. Perform Regular Maintenance It’s important to take steps to protect your computer from viruses and malware that can stop it from running the way it’s supposed to. Avoid clicking on questionable ads and emails that could end up infecting your computer. Some important maintenance to perform on a regular basis includes: • Updating your computer on a regular basis to improve security and fix any bugs • Installing an antivirus program that will do weekly scans and cleanups • Downloading programs to remove malware left behind by antivirus programs 2. Learn to Manage Online Privacy If you’re using social media on a regular basis, it’s important to make sure you’re managing your online privacy. Some things
to keep in mind when you’re posting on social media or clicking on links that other people share include: • Check your privacy settings to make sure only people you know can see your posts • Never send personal or financial information (phone numbers, bank account numbers, etc.), not even through a private message -- it’s easy to get scammed by someone pretending to be your friend • Never announce that you’re going out of town or will be out of the house for an extended period of time -this makes your home vulnerable to burglars 3. Be Careful About the Links You Click On Keep these tips in mind to help you discern between safe and unsafe links: • Never click on links that are sent in unsolicited emails, text messages, or private messages on social media sites • Avoid clicking on links that contain strange characters • Use browser plug-ins that can identify suspicious links Keep these in mind next time you hop online!

FOR BETTER RETIREMENT LIVING
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE Moments and memories Appreciating our existence requires a perspective that looks at it in its entirety. Like reading a book, we cannot say whether it is good or bad without knowing the whole tale. The same principle applies to life itself. Life is a series of events, each one leading inexorably to the next. And in order for us to see the bigger picture, we must look at and appreciate each event that occurs. Life is constant motion. We appear to be endlessly moving towards the future, perhaps even continuously worrying about the demands of tomorrow. Sometimes we forget to live in the present. We often fail to take hold of the instant and appreciate its fleeting passage. Each moment of our existence is a thread that we weave into the tapestry of our lives. When our lives finally reach their inevitable conclusion, what tapestry will we see? Every event in our lives leaves an indelible record in time forever written in history.
3820 Arthur Drive, Ladner • www.augustinehouse.ca
And upon reaching the twilight of our existence, we will realize that the most valuable possession that will remain with us are the memories of these moments.
Treat your Mom like a Queen with gifts from The Chocolate Bear. The Chocolate Bear Shoppe
Open Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13th • 11:00 - 5:00 1263 - 56th Street, Tsawwassen 604.943.7535 • www.thechocolatebearshoppe.com
Every instant we are alive is therefore precious. Let us seize every moment and relish its significance. The evanescence of our very existence should move us to see each instant as a chance to make a new and pleasant memory. Let us constantly create good memories especially with the people who matter. Because upon reaching the end of our life’s journey, all that we will leave behind are these memories.

A coaching staff of mainly teachers that rely on multi-sport athletes at all grade levels. Those are the key ingredients that have the Sun Devils well-positioned as the senior playoffs loom. The rugby momentum started a few years ago when current Elgin Park principal Jeff Johnstone was part of the administration at SDSS and piqued the interest at the Grade 8 level. It continued with the arrival of teachers Matt and Spencer Baines who were standout players themselves and know exactly how high school teams work as products of the one-time powerhouse program at McRoberts Secondary in Richmond. Matt now oversees the SDSS juniors and his brother is in charge of the seniors. “Jeff did a great job getting everybody out and we have been here to keep that going and now having enough coaches to sustain three teams. There are 30 kids out for Grade 8 this year,” said Matt. “We think we are in excellent shape for the next four to five years.” South Delta’s seniors shook the provincial “AAA” rankings two weeks ago with a 22-7 home field win over No. 2 Bateman of Abbotsford. The performance moved the Sun Devils up to the No. 3 spot and they improved to 4-0 in regular season play with a 31-7 romp over Langley’s RE Mountain. That sets the stage for a showdown with top ranked Yale this week in Abbotsford for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Fraser Valley playoffs. It will be the first meeting between the two
The Sun Devils are ranked No. 3 in B.C. sides since the Lions squeaked out a 13-12 win in the provincial quarter-finals a year ago. South Delta went on to place seventh. That team featured Jarvis Dashkewytch and Petro Chountalos who are part of Rugby Canada’s national team program. Chountalos has graduated while Dashkewytch is spending his Grade 12 year in Victoria at the Canadian Sports School so he can work out full-time at the Rugby Canada training centre. Still it takes more than two standouts to thrive in 15s version of the game. That’s where the program has succeeded in attracting a number of the school’s top football players
as well. This year’s squad already featured Andrew Kraft, Jacob Kirk, Caleb Van Til and Morgan Wolsey. The latest to come onboard is provincial MVP quarterback and UBC bound Michael Calvert who made his debut in the win over Mountain. Calvert and Kraft gives the Sun Devils a pair of electrifying players who are capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. Calvert was key player on the rugby field two years ago when South Delta finished second at the Fraser Valley Championships. He didn’t play a year ago but is looking to make one final athletic contribution before graduating. “It’s big football guys like Calvert and Grant (McDonald) coming out that gets everyone’s attention and now most of them are out here,” said Spencer. “Andrew is an amazing player and we thought we were going to lose him a couple of years ago but here is. “We think football is fantastic and we admire the job they do. The kids are hooked into football and they run an excellent program. We think the sports really compliment each other. Caleb is probably our best tackler and he has been developing that in both sports.” The South Delta juniors currently have a 1-3 record but is playing in the Fraser Valley’s top tier which means coming up against heavyweight schools such as Earl Marriott that is a top contender at the 4A level in senior. Key players such as Evan Paterson and Ethan Troniak have been regular call-ups with the senior team for added depth. “Those are hard games but the boys are hanging in tough and getting all that experience,” added Matt. “We think that’s more important instead of whipping teams (in tier two).” The juniors will play their final home game Wednesday when Abbotsford visits at 3:30 p.m.

Tanaka & Jensen team up to win B.C. Mixed title MARK BOOTH

It’s been a heck of a two-week run at the Richmond Curling Centre for Cody Tanaka. The Tsawwassen native and Tunnel Town Curling Club product skipped his rink to victory at the AMJ Campbell Van Lines B.C. Mixed Curling Championship. Team Tanaka defeated Royal City Curling Club’s Team Pierce 6-3 in Sunday’s gold medal game. The event featured teams of four players, two male and two female, playing with the traditional rules of curling in a nine-team triple knockout tournament. Tanaka was joined by another hometown standout — Shawna Jensen at third — along with his longtime teammate Travis Cameron at second and Catera Park at lead. Park also played third for Victoria’s Taylor Reese-Hansen’s rink which won the B.C. Junior Women’s Championship back in December. Team Tanaka secured a spot in the playoff round with an 8-5 win over Team Horning from Castlegar on Saturday morning. He then advanced to the final with an 8-3 win over Pierce,

then opened up a 5-1 advantage with two more in the fourth. He closed out the win with a single in the seventh.
Team Tanaka will now represent B.C. at the 2019 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, slated for November at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg. A week earlier, Tanaka threw final stones for Vic Schmizu’s rink which became the first team from the host Richmond Curling Centre to win the men’s title in the 19-year history of the Pacific International Cup. The event features a B.C. and International Division with the two winners meeting for the PIC title. The Richmond rink cruised past Arizona in the championship game. The Richmond team finished second in round-robin play then defeated Kamloops to advance to the B.C. final against Langley’s Darren Frycz. It was 6-6 in the eighth and final end when Tanaka continued his clutch play with two perfectly thrown rocks. It left Frycz with a very difficult final shot which over-curled, allowing RCC to steal two for the win. The victory also earned Tanaka another trip in November, this time to the Travelers National Curling Club Championships in New Brunswick, two weeks after the Canadian Mixed Championships.
