Citizens help nab suspect

Wild chain of events in Tsawwassen ends with driver taken into custody IAN JACQUES

A man is in police custody while a female suspect is still being sought after a dramatic police takedown and citizens’ arrest on 56th Street in Tsawwassen Monday afternoon. Around 12:30 p.m. Delta police received a call about a possible break-in in progress in a residential area near Brandrith Park. As police vehicles arrived, a U-Haul van leaving the scene collided with a police vehicle. The officer was not injured. DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf said due to concerns over public safety police did not pursue the U-Haul van. “The U-Haul was observed heading north on 56th Street,” said

Leykauf. “According to witnesses, the U-Haul allegedly ran a red light, clipped one vehicle, jumped the median and was involved in a headon collision with another van.” Leykauf said there were no injuries reported from the series of collisions. She said witnesses then reported the U-Haul driver exited the van and tried to take another vehicle near the Town Centre Mall. When that attempt was unsuccessful, the driver fled, but was soon apprehended by a number of citizens in the area. Officers then arrived to arrest the driver. “This was definitely an unusual series of events to unfold in our quiet town, but we’re thankful that no one was hurt,” said

Cris Leykauf Leykauf. Tsawwassen resident John Batista was at Cliff Drive Elementary picking up his daughter when he saw what turned out to be the U-Haul van in the parking lot. “It just didn’t fit in — something just didn’t seem right,” said Batista. “I went around the corner near the Chevron gas station and saw all these police cars and started

thinking about the van. Then the van comes flying down the road and I heard this huge crash.” Batista said when he got closer to the crash scene he saw several people holding a man. “There were three or four guys who should be commended for holding him down before the police got there. There was probably 20 people, just really good citizens,” he said. “It was good to see everyone in the community kind of stand together for something like that.” Leykauf said although police appreciate the intent of the citizens who stepped in to restrain the suspect, police are cautioning the public these types of actions are very risky.

“We’re very thankful that no one was injured during this process, and also aware that could easily have turned out differently,” Leykauf said. “Generally speaking, we recommend that if people want to help police, the most helpful thing they can do is to be a good witness. “If people think they have observed a crime taking place, please note details such as direction of travel, clothing worn by the suspect and any other descriptors, such as the suspect’s age, height, etc.,” she said. Any witnesses who have not spoken to police, or who may have photos or videos related to the incident, are asked to call 604946-4411 quoting file No. 18-8823.

Injured construction worker airlifted Searchers can’t locate man who fell into water IAN JACQUES

WorkSafeBC is investigating after a worker was injured on a construction site last Thursday afternoon in Tsawwassen. Just before 2 p.m. WorkSafe was notified by Delta police of what was described as a serious workplace incident. “Preliminary details indicate a worker was seriously injured after falling from a height on a residential townhouse construction site located at 1895 Osprey Rd. in Delta,” said WorkSafe spokesperson Gillian Burnett in an email to the Optimist. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the initial call-out. The injured worker was flown from the scene by medivac to an area hospital.

A worker seriously injured after falling at a townhouse construction site was airlifted to hospital last Thursday. Burnett said she could not provide an update on the extent of the injuries

or where the worker was being treated. “All I can confirm is that

the scene has been handed over to WorkSafeBC,” she said.

Delta police and other search agencies have been unable to locate a man who fell into the water in the area of Westham Island last Wednesday night. The search continued over the weekend with a dive team brought in, but according to police, there was no sign of the man. Police were initially called to the 3400-block of River Road West around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 after it was reported that a man fell off the dock of a

float home into the water. Public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf told the Optimist that Delta Police Department officers, members of the coast guard as well at the RCMP Air One helicopter all participated in the search last Wednesday night. She said search efforts included boats, a helicopter equipped with infrared light and divers. “Unfortunately the man was not located,” said Leykauf. “At this time there is nothing to indicate the incident was suspicious,” she added.

Sprinkling restrictions come into effect early Lawns can be watered two mornings a week

Metro Vancouver’s lawn watering regulations came into effect yesterday and will remain in place until Oct. 15. The regulations are being activated two weeks earlier than last year as part of Metro Vancouver’s new drinking water conservation plan. Residents can water their lawn two mornings per week, down from three, with additional adjustments related to watering trees, shrubs and flowers with a sprinkler. Even-numbered addresses can use a sprinkler to water lawns on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4 to 9 a.m., while odd-numbered addresses can do so on Thursdays and Sundays. Watering trees, shrubs and flowers is permitted any day, from 4 to 9 a.m., if using a sprinkler, or any time if hand watering. According to Metro, an hour of rain or watering per week is all that’s needed for a healthy lawn.

FILE PHOTO

Metro Vancouver’s lawn watering regulations came into effect yesterday. “Water conservation is not just about water shortages — it’s imperative that we use water wisely all year round, both indoors and outdoors,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee. “With a growing population and the effects of climate change, conserving water every day is the right thing to do.” Surveys conducted in

the Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam watersheds in March found the snowpack is more than 120 per cent of the historical average for this time of year. “Activating our lawn watering regulations earlier in the season, coupled with an above-average snowpack in our watersheds, puts us in a good position for the coming summer,” added Mussatto.

Paralyzed fitness leader helps celebrate heroes Night of entertainment, education at Springs IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Mike Hamill and Tsawwassen Springs are inviting the community to a night of entertainment, education and celebrating heroes. Everyone is a Hero is set for Monday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Springs ballroom. The evening’s MC is Bro Jake from TSN 1040 and will feature sessions from Dr. Jack Taunton, Peter Twist from Twist Sport Conditioning and Grant Roberts (personal trainer, nutritionist and lifestyle coach). A team from Simon Fraser University will also be on hand to present its Exoskeleton project that Hamill is actively participating in. “We want to get some support and get people to invest in this program,” Hamill said. “I have sat with the team and I’m helping with some of the design work. We have great hopes in the future. This is the evolution from the wheelchair to walking again. This technology will help all kinds of people over time.” As part of the entertain-

Mike Hamill is hosting Everyone is a Hero at Tsawwassen Springs next week. ment portion of the evening, Hamill will present a screening of 15:17 to Paris with an address from Spencer Stone, who plays himself in the movie. “His courage and strength is truly inspirational,” said Hamill. The movie was directed by Hamill’s close friend Clint Eastwood and tells the story of how Stone and two of his friends stopped a terrorist on a train in 2015. The owner of Tsawwassen Springs Fitness, Hamill has been a leader in the fitness industry. A boating accident during a fishing trip near Haida Gwaii last June rendered him a paraplegic.

FILE PHOTO

He spent many months recovering in hospital, but has been back at home for the past eight weeks adjusting to his new life. “I’m just doing my very best to make one day at a time work,” he said. “It’s a whole new world being in a wheelchair. Luckily I have really good support from a lot of good friends. I had Rick Hansen pretty much beside me most of the time in hospital visiting. When I woke up in ICU he was there. But life goes on. You learn to adjust and make sure you have a happy face.” Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at Tsawwassen Springs Fitness or at the door on the night of the event.

he golden handshake is on hold. Efforts by civic politicians to get a little slice of what their senior counterparts enjoy hit a roadblock last week when the Metro Vancouver board rescinded a pay increase and retirement allowance that had drawn the ire of the public. I imagine municipal politicians, particularly mayors who do the job on a full-time basis, look at their provincial colleagues with a sense of envy when it comes to the perks afforded them upon leaving office, either by choice or at the hands of voters. MLAs that left prior to, or were defeated in, last year’s provincial election can continue to collect a hundred-grand-a-year paycheque for up to 15 months as part of a sweet severance package. That’s in addition to a gold-plated pension that can top $80,000 annually for long-serving MLAs and access to a retraining allowance. It’s no wonder those at the local level were looking to get a little slice when they approved a retirement allowance in March that would have given parting board members a lump sum equivalent to about a grand a year for up to 10 years of service. It’s chicken feed compared to what goes on in Victoria, but the ham-handed way in which it was introduced and the arbitrary retroactivity of it created enough of a firestorm that Metro directors subsequently shelved it in favour of striking an independent panel to review board members’ remuneration, including benefits. I’m not sure why the issue of a pension/retirement allowance is being discussed at the regional level when politicians at the Metro Vancouver table do the vast majority of their work in their respective communities, which would seem to be the logical place to establish any kind of golden handshake. It’s odd to compensate outgoing politicians for attending a monthly regional board meeting but do nothing to recognize the volume of work they’ve done on a local level. That’s not to suggest local politicians should stick their snouts in the same trough as their provincial counterparts, but the idea of some sort of transition funding for an outgoing mayor (but not part-time councillors) seems reasonable. It would make more sense to have city halls discuss the issue than for Metro Vancouver to take another swing at it.

Let’s introduce granny flats as well as other housing options A housing revolution is happening in big cities around the world and our governments need to get on board immediately or be left in the dust. The demand for affordable housing, especially rental units, for lower and middle-income folks, aka the working class, has surpassed the crisis point. This is forcing a huge and vital population to move either far away, share over-crowded dwellings or retreat into their cars and RVs. Meanwhile, government regulations, permits and restrictions for housing creep along at a snail’s pace relevant to 20-plus years ago. There is an important international housing conference taking place in Prague, Czech Republic next month called reSITE 2018 Accommodate. I wish I could attend but I no longer do long flights. If you can go, please take notes and share with us later. The curator describes the theme of the conference: “The most beloved qualities of our cities have transformed them into luxury goods. Having a ‘right to the city’ begins with housing, and that’s why we need new strategies, technologies and protections to build homes for all of us, fairly, equitably and sustainably.” With affordable rentals being virtually non-existent in Delta for mid and lower income folks,

Community Comment ML BURKE

another quick fix is to open access to existing housing such as extra bedrooms, basement suites and infill units by allowing construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) such as granny flats, converted garages, laneway units, tiny houses and such. Some of this is allowed in Delta now, but excessive permitting and parking restrictions are preventing many homeowners from doing these conversions. Shelter is more important than parking. Besides, owning a car is beyond the means of many renters. I’ve heard from a few long-term Deltans who agree with these options because their grown children are having to move away to other towns and provinces. Many of those retired adults are cashing out and following them, so they can reside in the same community and live more afford-

ably. If Delta’s homeowners were allowed to build a small detached unit on their property they could downsize and their adult kids or other families could move into the larger home. The City of Vancouver is considered a pioneer in infill housing with more than 2,000 ADUs built over the last decade. I’m sure Delta could learn something from them. Desperately needed for the homeless or soon-to-be are safe parking areas with water and electric hook-ups, toilet and shower amenities, so people don’t have to hide or keep moving every night. We need a revitalized version of trailer and mobile home parks in every municipality, similar to the retirement villages our snowbirds flock to in the winter. They could be designed for temporary short-term stays right up to permanent modular residential parks. Because of our exorbitant land costs governments need to lease or sell available land to address this crisis. No doubt the NIMBYs will be out in force, but our leaders need to be strong and act despite opposition. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Not just track needs help Editor: Re: Rubber meets the road, April 25 Glad to see that finally something is being done to the track at South Delta Secondary. Hopefully the Delta board of education will also see to replacing the football/rugby/soccer field. The field has been in poor shape for the past six years. The only repairs over the years have been to spread sand and irrigate the field, leaving some areas of the field with holes that can cause injury to an ankle or a knee. Some years ago the

football team, coaches and parent volunteers resurfaced areas of the field with sod — since then all we have done is comb the field the day before a game to ensure that all dog feces were picked up. I am a lover of dogs but too often people take their dog for a run at the park, leaving little piles on the field. Signs about picking up after your dog (if there are any) are ignored and I have not seen any supply of doggy-do bags. South Delta is a great school with awesome teachers, students and the parental involvement is

phenomenal. South Delta is a very talented school in academics, the arts and athletics. As for athletics, South Delta has had many students receive college scholarships for their particular sport and have gone on to be very successful at the college level. South Delta needs a new track and a new field. Hopefully the board and the city will soon upgrade the track and make the field a turf field like the one at Winskill Park, but to include markings for high school football. Ray Crawford

Much to make Green chuckle

Editor: I had a few chuckles reading your April 25 edition. First was the report of the Gateway CAO assuring a Delta committee that his company has “zero tolerance for any criminal activity.” As if here in Delta there’s no need to worry about the now-worldfamous Vancouver model of money laundering that afflicts other casinos. Second laugh was Dale Wallace’s letter criticizing Nicholas Wong’s opinion piece because it “implied Kinder Morgan is only in

it for the money.” So are those Texans also building their pipeline to serve Canada’s national interest? Is that why Ottawa is in talks to assume the job-sucking project’s catastrophic risks? Is that why we may be giving ex-Enron executives billions of our tax dollars? Third giggle was Brad Sherwin’s column making wild claims about the dangers of any voting system other than what we already have. He illustrates his concerns by blaming the BC Greens for John Horgan’s

court-based stance on the Kinder Morgan question. But wait, the 2017 election was first-past-the-post. I guess he didn’t hear that we Greens were vociferously opposed to the NDP continuing with Site C and subsidizing LNG fracking. In spite of our three seats in Victoria, we can’t change those two outrageous decisions. But we can focus on reducing fiscal and environmental debt for future generations by transitioning to the new economy rather than investing in the old. Larry Colero

Driver lucky to have missed scooter

Editor I don’t know if I would say you were wanton, or careless, but I will say this: You were lucky. Last Friday as you barreled through the busy intersection heading east on 12th Avenue past the entrances to the grocery stores in your big black pick-up, you were lucky you didn’t run over and kill the elderly man on his scooter in the crosswalk. Yes, he was crossing against the traffic light. He was older and confused, and vulnerable. I was travelling west but I was able

to stop in time, seeing that the guy beside me had also stopped. I go slowly through that busy area so I was able to stop as the scooter passed right in front of me and against the red light. But you appeared to be in a rush, swerving out of the passing lane some 50 metres up to speed past a slower car to continue speeding along the travelling lane. I honked my horn hoping I could somehow stop this impending disaster, but you flew through, missing him by two or

three metres. I think you looked in your rear-view mirror to see what had happened behind you as you got into the left turn lane at 56th Street. We have a lot of elderly seniors in our community, in that area especially. It must have been something important to you, but it was fortunate that you missed him. He would have been in the wrong, of course, but I don’t think you could have lived with yourself if you had hit him. Yes, you got lucky. Murray Pratt

Roundabouts needed to move traffic

Editor: Re: Islands would speed up traffic and reduce crashes, letter to the editor, April 27 Selwyn Dodd is a man very much after my own heart. Of course we need a roundabout at the intersection of Elliott Street and Ladner Trunk Road as well as ones at Ladner

Trunk Road and Highway 17A and 56th Street and Highway 17. A few years ago when major work was being done to the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and Elliott Street, people in Ladner were provided the opportunity of having an island at that intersection, but instead they chose the plethora of lights which

slows traffic to a crawl and virtually to a stop. Europeans are more enlightened when it comes to moving traffic through such intersections. Meanwhile we will have to accept a maze of traffic lights, and waiting, and waiting. That’s how it goes here, Selwyn. Bernard Barton

Blue Cross funds gastroscope The Pacific Blue Cross Health Foundation has made a $10,000 donation to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation that will go towards purchasing a gastroscope. A gastroscope is a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached that is used to examine the lining of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroscopies are a vital part of diagnostic procedures and can help confirm or rule out medical conditions such as stomach ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, celiac disease, stomach cancer and oesophageal cancer.

“We are extremely grateful to have received such generous support from the Pacific Blue Cross Health Foundation,” says Angela Turner, major giving manager for the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “Delta Hospital conducted 670 gastroscopies last year. Having the newest equipment, like this gastroscope, means a great deal for our medical staff and most importantly the patients we serve.” Richard Taylor, chair of the Pacific Blue Cross Health Foundation, said he’s pleased the donation will benefit many British Columbians.

“As part of our mission to improve health and wellbeing in the province, we are delighted to con-

tribute in a meaningful way to support the diagnostic procedures at Delta Hospital,” said Taylor.

I

t is with much sadness and sorrow that the family announces that John or Bud as everyone knew him, passed away on February 6th, 2018 at the KinCentre Care Home in Tsawwassen. Bud was a devoted husband to Blanche, father to Gayle and Marc, father-inlaw to Alison, grandfather to Thomas, Sarah & Nathalie and a friend to many. Bud was a WWII veteran, a Freemason and a Shriner. He had a continuous positive outlook on life and was a fighter to the very end. Bud turned 98 years old on November 18th, 2017. He was born seven miles North of Sturgis, Saskatchewan and spent his youth there. He was the oldest of fifteen siblings. Bud and Blanche met in Montreal during his time there for the RCAF. In 1954, Bud and Blanche married. Later Bud, Blanche and a newly arrived baby Gayle were stationed in Kuppenheim, Germany and Sardinia, Italy for six years. Afterwards they moved to Blanche’s home city of Vancouver where Marc was born. They eventually settled in Tsawwassen where they lived for almost thirty years. Bud joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1940 as a Private and four years later fought in WWII. In 1944 Bud was a part of the Normandy D-Day invasion force, where his section lost almost half its men in a tank battle. During the battle, Bud was wounded when his trench received a direct hit from enemy fire resulting in Bud spending two months in hospital in London. In recognition, he received the Legion of Honour Award from France for his service. He has represented Canada at many war anniversary and memorial local, national and international events. After his time in the Armed Forces, Bud served in the RCAF as a loadmaster on the immortal North Star airplanes. Following Bud’s service in the Army and Air Force, Bud went on to become a residential real estate broker and contractor in Richmond. And finally, Bud served as the bookkeeper and customs broker for Boutique Blanche for many years. Bud was a large part of both the Tsawwassen business community and the community at large. To know him was to love him

Investors digging the

Point Roberts vibe Projects look to turn quiet American peninsula into a tourism hot spot Ian Jacques

!

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

Point Roberts is at a bit of a crossroads. Does it remain a picturesque secluded hideaway by the sea or does it become a tourism hot spot known around the world? A recent influx of Chinese investment would suggest the latter. During the past five years millions of dollars have been poured into several projects, including the marina, housing developments and golf course, in the hopes of turning the American peninsula of 1,300 permanent residents into a vibrant tourism destination. Point Roberts Marina Beijing businessman Gao Zhu and Chinese billionaire Chen Yihong bought the Point Roberts Marina in 2015 for $27 million. Since then they have spent $4 million on upgrades, putting in a new dock, improving much of the fire suppression and infrastructure, and continuing plans to upgrade the slips and moorage, among other things. “When Gao comes over here to meet up with me I will see him get out of his car and the first thing he does is take a deep breath of fresh air,” says Wayne Knowles, a realtor and developer who has lived in Point Roberts for 25 years who has his hands in many of the investment projects. “He loves Point Roberts because it is secluded, it is in the United States and it is close to Richmond. They see this as just a great opportunity.”

A Richmond investor has undertaken significant improvements to the golf course in Point Roberts since buying it last year.

Golf course re-born Owner Kenji Nose had been looking to sell the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club for several years. He had a few offers, but nothing came of them so he eventually shut the course down in January of 2017. It sat idle for months, falling into disrepair, when along came another Chinese investor with a vision to re-build, re-brand and ultimately re-open the course. Coco Luo, who lives in Richmond, owns two golf courses in China. She bought the Point Roberts course for just over $4.4 million in July of last year. An avid golfer, business leader and philanthropist, Luo played the course several times a few years ago. It was then that she fell in love with not only the course, but the community as well. Through an interpreter, Luo tells the Optimist that “she

believes this is a great course and that she has a vision that the course can be a unique destination for golfers from not only the Lower Mainland, but from around the world. She knows business, she knows golf and she is confident she can turn this around.” Ladner’s Wayne Carleton, the original course architect, has been hired by Luo as the director of operations to oversee the re-construction. Since Luo bought the course, now re-named the Bald Eagle Golf Club, Carleton says work has been steady. “We have been cutting the grass down on the fairways, re-working all the greens, replacing and renovating all the bunkers, fixing cart paths, renovating the clubhouse and landscaping throughout the parking lot area,” he

says. “We have a great team and lots of local contractors. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are starting to see the fruits of all of our labour.” Carleton is pleased to be working with Luo and to be a part of the course’s resurrection. “It’s a huge component to the community. We will probably be one of the largest employers on the Point,” he says. “I think everyone was very disappointed when the course closed. Now that we have committed owners who want to make it what it once was, people are excited about that.” Future plans include a larger clubhouse with space for more dining, banquets and potentially some rooms for overnight guests. There is also a real estate component with 34 building lots expected to be on the market towards the end of this year or early in 2019. Bald Eagle Golf Club is scheduled to open on May 20.

roads are in place. “It’s been a long process,” Li admits. “We just don’t want this to be a place where people come over for gas, buy a few groceries or pick up a parcel. We want them to stay. We want to change the perception.” And to change that perception, Li says it is critical all of the investors work together. “Naturally we want to do things together. It is not just about golf or sailing at the marina, we want to create and organize events and activities jointly, which makes it better to promote tourism opportunities for the area. “Many have been interested about the golf course and buying the course for several years, but they haven’t found the right fit. Coco and her team are the right fit. Three years ago when we first came to Point Roberts we just focused on our own business. Now we see what the opportunities can be if we work together.”

ABOVE: Seven of the 58 homes in the Seabright Farm development have now been built.

Seabright A major housing development is finally on the horizon. Zhu bought a stake in Seabright Farm, a 60-acre site on a beautiful bluff overlooking the Gulf of Georgia, in 2012. It has taken several years to get permits in place, but following final subdivision approval in September of 2016, the project is now well on its way. Frank Li is president of Mengfa International Resources Inc., which has a controlling interest in Seabright and many of the other investment projects currently underway in the community. He says almost half of the 58 homes of the development have been sold, seven houses have been built and all the servicing and

Blackfish Resort But it’s not all about Chinese investment. American developer Steve O’Neill has been trying to build the Blackfish Resort in an old cannery building on Marine Drive for more than a decade. Joel Lantz, president of the Point Roberts Registered Voters’ Association, has worked closely with O’Neill since the project was conceived. Lantz says all of the permits have finally been approved and more financing is being sought. He says the plan is to build 22 to 26 rooms with an option to expand, two restaurants and a spa to make it a true destination resort. “If he can pull this off, it’s going to be quite

a place,” says Lantz. “He is trying to make a place where it could truly be a destination spot. Everything would be there and you wouldn’t have to leave the property if you didn’t want to.” Community reaction Any change comes with its fair share of positives and negatives. Some in Point Roberts enjoy the peace and quiet and would prefer it to stay that way, while others welcome the investment and economic benefits these projects would bring to the area. Armene Belless has lived in Point Roberts most of the last 25 years. She is not a fan of condo developments and questions whether the housing plans near the golf course will eventually take off. “I understand why many people in the community want to see development. They want to have jobs and more people buying homes should mean more jobs,” Belless says. “Businesses that only have customers three to four months out of the year find it difficult, if not impossible, to survive, but having more summer homes won’t be all that helpful for our economy.” However, she would love to see the Blackfish Resort vision finally come into focus. “We don’t even have a B&B any more so his small hotel/motel with a restaurant and facilities for weddings and other conferences would actually bring some year-round jobs,” she says. “And goodness knows we need tourist housing. Hotel/motels right on the water like Steve’s offer storm watching in the winter while sitting by a fireplace... and bring in some business year round.” Mark Robbins, president of the Point Roberts Taxpayers’ Association, feels the development projects in the works are generally viewed favourably in the community.

“It’s not an issue [whether they are Chinese investors or other investors], it’s not discussed,” says Robbins. “People are delighted – even non golfers like me – that there will be a restaurant open again at the golf course.” Tracy Evans, the owner of Breakwaters, formerly the Compass Rose, says she welcomes the new investment. “I think it’s a healthy addition to the community. It has helped us re-start and re-boot,” says Evans. “When you look at the investment down at Seabright, here at the marina, at the golf course, things were sitting stagnant, especially the golf course, but the investors have come in and it’s bringing some life. It’s all positive. We are certainly seeing a lot more Chinese customers coming in as well. It’s a good, healthy boost to the economy.” And a healthy boost to the economy is what it’s all about, says Knowles. “I understand some want that peace and quiet and reject change, but these are not projects that will destroy what we have. They will enhance what we have.”

The second annual Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s Walk in a Box will be held in Ladner on Saturday, May 12. It will take place at the Delta Secondary track from noon to 4 p.m. Funds raised through the walk will help people in the community living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia connect to a provincewide network of information, services and support. The Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s is Canada’s biggest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias with walks happening in over 20 communities in B.C. A typical walk might happen in a much larger space than a track, but the Walk in a Box format allows easy coordination with minimal additional support. Last year’s Ladner event saw 45 people take

She says the inaugural event was particularly special: “We were honoured by the presence of one of our close friend’s mom who currently has Alzheimer’s disease. She walked a tiny bit and enjoyed all the love that was showered on her by everyone.” Thomas says this year

they’re hoping to see more teens and young kids participate. The event will also include prize draws thanks to community contributors, information booths and a children’s zone. If there’s anything that will prompt me to officially close the cover on Facebook, it will likely have less to do with my privacy settings and more to do with TMI. You know what I mean: Too Much Information. I get it. A lot. Two weeks ago, for instance, a colleague from work announced to his FB world that his youngest had finally moved out and that his nest was officially empty — well, minus his wife, that is. From now on, he added, he would be able to pad around the

house semi naked. Didn’t need to know that. A day or two later, another colleague was on the Book. His dog and cat had been battling, he said, and he’d been in the middle. He included a picture of his bloodied leg. Really? Who delays a run to the first aid cabinet in order to take — and post — a picture? TMI. There are people who turn to Facebook to brag shamelessly about their cars, their clothes, their occupations, their holidays and their children, and I’ve talked about them before. But the TMI-ers are not bragging so much as they’re sharing what I do not need to know. You know what I mean. “Down with a nasty intestinal bug,” someone will say. Sorry. I really am. But do I really want to know that? Can’t say I do in the slightest. Almost every day, it seems, one of my FB

friends is TMI-ing it up in a very big way. I don’t want to appear rude or insensitive, but I have to say that I don’t need to know when any of them are 1.) struggling hopelessly to lose 15 pounds; 2.) having money issues with their significant other; or 3.) suing the neighbours over a broken fence. None of my business. And absolutely TMI. Beats me why anyone would tell Facebook that last night’s lentil soup had left them feeling a tad, well, “off,” but I’m thinking that’s maybe just me. Food poisoning? Heck, at one time, the afflicted would he advised to stay off solids, chew on ice chips and take a nap. These days, some of them are still inclined to do that — but only after they’ve logged on to Facebook. Yep, not planning to get off the site right now, but can’t say about tomorrow. Information is fine by me. TMI is not.

Major university hearing study seeks participants. Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge. Qualifying participants may also receive a demonstration of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve lifechanging hearing healthcare across Canada.

Why participate in the hearing study?

Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the

need to better understand how hearing loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this major new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study. * Pichora-Fuller, M. K. (2016). How social psychological factors may modulate auditory and cognitive functioning during listening. Ear and Hearing, 37, 92S-100S. † Study participants must be over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids. No fees and no purchase necessary. National Institutes of Health. (2010).

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

South Delta hockey and soccer reach deal to coordinate grassroots schedules MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The movement to get more children playing multiple sports has resulted in a historic partnership between South Delta Minor Hockey and South Delta United Soccer Club for the 2018-19 season and beyond. The associations have agreed to coordinate their schedules to create less conflicts for kids between the ages of kindergarten and Grade 3. The arrangement comes at a time when there at last seems to be a consensus to encourage participation in more than one sport. South Delta isn’t the only region to see minor hockey and soccer come together. SDU Head of Player Development Russ Heggie started the wheels in motion after learning Coastal F.C. and Semiahmoo in South Surrey already had a deal in place. “At SDU we realize the benefits of multi-sport participation in the long term health and physical development of our players,” said the club’s technical director Mark Rogers. “We appreciate the collaboration with SDMHA in order to lessen the stress on the players and parents. Working together on practice and game scheduling for our youngest participants will only strengthen our relationship which will translate into a better experience for our player and parent membership.” The announcement is music to the ears of Catherine Moennick. Her nine-year-old twins, Calum and Jadyn, play soccer and hockey which resulted in plenty of scrambling last season to make all the practices and games. As a PE teacher at Tamanawis Secondary School in Surrey, she also understands the significance of getting kids involved in more than one physical activity at an early age. “I really think it is important to have kids in multiple sports. As a

A partnership between South Delta Minor Hockey Association and South Delta United to coordinate schedules at the younger age levels is great news for multi-sport twins Jadyn and Calum Moennick. PE teacher, you can see there is a dropout rate as kids get older and you want to keep them in sports as long as possible so they stay out of trouble and stay active,” she said. “You are also seeing less and less teenagers involved in sports. If you can give them a variety of things to stay involved, so when they do figure out what they really like, they will have something. “My biggest fear is if your kid is only in one thing and then decide they don’t like it, it’s kind of late to put them back in something

else. All the different sports also involve different fundamental skills and movements. It’s doing things that are using their bodies in different ways so they are not going to get overuse injuries from the same sport.” The agreement covers kids as they progress through the grassroots level programs of both sports. Once they reach rep age there is a greater commitment and travel for games outside of South Delta which makes coordinating schedules impossible. Still,

there is hope today’s coaches will be more flexible and understanding, even the older age levels. “It was great to be able to sit down with South Delta Hockey and have them basically say this is a great idea,” added SDU president Rich Zahn. “Why does a kid in Grade 2 have to pick a sport? That’s nonsense, especially now when there really is no defined season any more. There definitely is a big movement to keep children active and in many sports as we can.”

Delta Ice Hawks blueliner Aiden Hansen-Bukuta could be joining his former coach next year in the B.C. Hockey League with the Nanaimo Clippers.

Some Ice Hawk talent could be following Naylor to BCHL MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Darren Naylor quickly went from the Delta Ice Hawks general manager to a very interested B.C. Hockey League observer at the conclusion of the Cyclone Taylor Cup. The recent gold medal game loss to the Richmond Sockeyes officially ended Naylor’s run overseeing the Ice Hawks as he now focuses solely on his duties as GM and head coach of the Nanaimo Clippers. Steve Robinson will take over the GM duties on top of coaching the Ice Hawks next season. Naylor will still serve as a consultant to the club. He took over the team late in the 2015-2016 campaign and promptly led Delta to an opening round playoff upset of Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack. The momentum carried over into last year where he surrounded 20-yearolds Cam Cuthbert, Mark Trotman and Quinten Wideski with some solid incoming talent. Delta finished first in the Tom Shaw Conference and lost in six games to Aldergrove in the league finals.

That was followed by an outstanding recruiting class that propelled Delta to PJHL regular season and playoff champions, along with silver at provincials as one of the youngest teams in the league. “These were a great bunch of kids that made me so good that I got promoted,” smiled Naylor. “I will forever be thankful. I’m not only proud of what’s been accomplished on the ice but off of it as well with all the young kids wearing Ice Hawks jerseys. I definitely didn’t see that when I first got here. That’s all of (owner) Eduard (Epshtein’s) hard work too.” Naylor’s best work in Delta was rebuilding his blueline this past season with five key rookies — Aiden Hansen-Bukuta, Gabriel LeBlanc, Liam Visram, Isiah Hendricks and Thomas Garey. He may see most of them next season in Nanaimo too. “Hansen-Bukuta for sure and LeBlanc, Visram and Henricks are also definitely in the mix,” said Naylor. “They all have earned it. I was very excited about the ‘D’ back at the start of the season. We scored a lot of goals this season but we didn’t give up too many and they were a big part of it.”

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT

WOUDZIA, Jessica Alicia April 10, 1984 - April 22, 2018 ALLEN, Donald Barclay 1931 - 2018 Captain Don Allen passed away peacefully on April 20th. He waited until his 61st wedding anniversary to say goodbye. Don joined Canadian Pacific in 1955 as a pilot and retired in 1983. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Deb (Bill), Mike (Susanne), Barb (Brian), six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He always travelled “From here to there with Flare”. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jessica Alicia Woudzia, eldest child of John and Kathy Woudzia, on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at the age of 34. Jessica was a loving, vivacious, passionate individual who cared deeply for her family, friends and students. Jessica lived for her beautiful 2 year old baby girl, Maddie, who was the pride and joy of her life. Jessica was a secondary school teacher by profession and she loved her chosen calling. She had a particular passion for working with students who were struggling and was forever the champion of the underdog. She was passionate about science and in particular, biology. She loved competition figure skating and soccer as a youngster and later hiking, rollerblading, yoga, and walking with Maddie in the park. Most recently she had developed a passion for “30-minute Hit” boxing sessions which she approached with the same vigor and intensity she devoted to all her pursuits. Jessica definitely had a playful side. She loved shoes, make-up and clothing, sometimes finding herself spending 8 hours at a Winners without batting an eye. She also had a passion for craftwork and family members would typically receive customized birthday or anniversary cards which were all works of original art. She also had a zeal for card games and cribbage and within the family circle was definitely master of her domain in these areas. Left to honour her memory is her partner, Evan Ruel, daughter Maddie (Madison), parents John and Kathy Woudzia, grandparents Tony & Mary Zelko, and Angie Woudzia, siblings Brandon, Jennifer, Alexandra, and Jillian, uncles Gordon Zelko, Tony Laranjo, Trevor Nidoski, and Craig Merritt, aunts Rosa Fergus (Laranjo) Lisa Woudzia and Cathy Nidoski, cousins Katrina and Hannah Zelko, Alison Huntington, Jason Laranjo, Alicia and Anthony Tremolada, Lindsay and Taylor Nidoski, Daniel Lundquist, Joshua and Olivia Merritt. Special thanks to all the staff and students at Sands Secondary School in Delta for their outpouring of support and love during this difficult time. May your spirit always soar, our beautiful Jessica. Online condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca. Closed celebration of life for immediate family and friends only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jessica Woudzia Memorial Scholarship at https://www.youcaring.com/jessicawoudziamemo rial-1176408 or on Kathy Woudzia’s Facebook page.
