BC Tweed’s Hornby Drive greenhouse in East Delta recently received 100,000 young marijuana plants as the company readies for a legal recreational market.

The world’s largest legal marijuana greenhouse operation will be in East Delta. Having recently received 100,000 young plants, BC Tweed’s 1.7-million-square-foot facility on Hornby Drive is positioning itself to be a one of the biggest players in the Canadian recreational marijuana market when the product is legalized

later this year. Already the largest supplier of legal medical marijuana in Canada, Ontario-based Canopy Growth Corp., which provides about one-third of the legal medical cannabis for the roughly 225,000 Canadians who have cards, has partnered with SunSelect Produce to create BC Tweed. The partnership also has 1.3 million square feet of greenhouse space in Langley that’s converting to cannabis.

The BC Tweed greenhouse is expected to grow nine varieties of marijuana.

Providing cannabis for both the medical and non-medical markets, a variety of strains will be grown and processed on site before being sent for packaging prior to delivery to a B.C. government distribution centre. From there, cannabis will be sent to government-run retail outlets as well as private stores, which could include those run by Canopy. Edibles and extracts won’t be legalized this year, but oils will

be available for those who want to make their own. Greenhouse owner and B.C. Tweed president Victor Krahn said it will take a few more months to convert his operation. Hilary Black, Canopy’s director of patient education and advocacy, explained the goal is to ensure there’s a sufficient quantity of product for the recreational sector and growing medical market. No mall plan in near future Delta wants vision for entire Town Centre property but Century not there yet SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It could be a while before Tsawwassen residents see what else is proposed for the Town Centre Mall. Following Delta council’s decision last fall to tell the Century Group to come back with an overall redevelopment plan for the 56th Street site, there’s been no word when a new proposal will be brought to the public for feedback. Company president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist no application is forthcoming in the next several months, but he has been engaging with groups such as the Rotary Club and the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association on some ideas. Last fall, most residents at a public information meeting, as well as letters to city hall, had less than flattering comments about Century’s proposed “Block A” mixed-use building, pitched as the first phase of an overall redevelopment of the aging mall. The proposed six-storey building fronting 56th Street, which included 11,733 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and 79 rental apartments above, got a rough ride from an aes-

The Century Group is still working on an overall redevelopment plan for its Town Centre Mall. thetic point of view with residents describing it as everything from a hospital to a dormitory to a Sovietstyle apartment block. A draft concept was provided to illustrate how the proposed mixed-use building would have been incorporated into an overall redevelopment, however, Century had not yet presented details of an overall plan for the site. The company would only say the concept for the master plan had several new buildings as well as

a “High Street” with pocket plazas throughout. The form and density of the other buildings still had to be worked out following municipal and public consultation, explained project planner Stefan Melnyk at last fall’s public meeting. Melnyk also noted the Official Community Plan allows 668 living units for the area, but said it was still early in the visioning process in the creation of a mixed-use retail village. After the negative pub-

lic reaction, council told Century Group to revise its application, and that a master plan for the entire site must be submitted with any development application. At the time, Hodgins said he would rework things as needed. In an interview three years ago, after unveiling his initial vision, Hodgins said the major redevelopment would create a new “green heart” for Tsawwassen. That plan involved increasing site coverage from 27 per cent

to over 50 per cent by transforming the 10-acre property from suburban mall to a mixed-use neighbourhood. Parking would be primarily underground. The plan included several four- to six-storey buildings with retail at ground level and condos above as well as a 12- to 20-storey concrete tower. In total, about 500 condos would be built. The site would also be linked with a series of pathways and gathering plazas, a park and fountain.

Education will be crucial as marijuana becomes legal

CONTINUED from Page 1 Genetic modifications have made the number of strains, as well as levels and types of potencies, vast in the cannabis field. Canopy currently has about 50 products in stores made from around 35 plant varieties. The company notes in its genetics vault it has over 300 distinct strains, but they will not all make it into production. The B.C. Tweed greenhouse in Delta is expected

to have about nine varieties grown. Education will be key, explained Black, including informing people on the proper use of edibles. “We’re going to take all that same knowledge and expertise that we have in how to safely distribute cannabis and educate consumers. Everything we know in the medical market, we’re going to use all that knowledge in the recreational market to make sure that when people

start accessing cannabis legally, they have all the information that they need to be safe and responsible,” she said. Black said access to balanced, evidenced-based education will be especially important for youth. “As a leader in this country, it’s our responsibility to listen to our communities and find out what are your concerns, and then for us to put the resources into creating the research or the evidence

or the communication tools, or whatever it is the community needs,” she said. Involved with various corporate social responsibility and safe driving initiatives, as well as launching the Tweed Collective, a multi-milliondollar grant program for the arts in communities where Canopy operates, its long-term goal is to have 5.6 million square feet of production capacity. Meanwhile, just down

the road in East Ladner, the large Village Farms International greenhouse is also making the conversation to pot. It’s a partnership with Emerald Therapeutics, forming the joint venture Pure Sunfarms. Conversion of the first 250,000-square-foot section of the 1.1-millionsquare-foot Delta 3 is substantially complete and conversion of the remainder of Delta 3 now underway.

Utilities work is causing traffic delays in ’Bay SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Drivers heading in and out of Boundary Bay will have to put up with delays as Delta undertakes utilities work. Aimed at improving the drainage system, the Boundary Bay Road Stormwater Improvements Project will see construction of a storm sewer pipe along Boundary Bay Road completed in mid-June. Construction of a flow control structure will begin immediately after and that’s anticipated to be finished this fall. The city notes the

majority of construction will take place along the northbound lane of Boundary Bay Road, which means singlelane alternating traffic is required during daytime construction. The maximum wait time for singlelane alternating traffic is five minutes, according to Delta. The project also happens to be located within an archaeological zone, so a qualified archaeologist and representatives from First Nations will be on site to guide construction crews. Boundary Bay Regional Park will remain open

at the Southlands, the sanitary sewer for that project has already been installed on the west side of Boundary Bay Road.

The City of Delta will soon be replacing several of its community monument signs in both South Delta and North Delta. Civic politicians recently gave final approval to the project, which has been on the books since 2015. The project calls for the removal of the “Welcome to sunny Tsawwassen” sign on 56th Street. Delta will work with the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association

on an appropriate location and potential redesign of the sign, which will be installed in the business core. A new Tsawwassen sign will be installed on 56th Street to replace the relocated sign. A new North Delta sign will be installed on 72nd Avenue just east of Highway 91. According to a Delta staff report, the project should be complete by the fall with the cost — $125,000 — to come from council contingency funds.

Delta man murdered in Pitt Meadows

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating after a Delta man’s body was found last week in a rural area of Pitt Meadows. During a news conference last Thursday, IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Frank Jang said Ridge Meadows RCMP received a 911 call last Monday alerting police to the body in the 14500-block of Hale Road. Police have identified the man as 43-year-old Ian Roberts of Delta, who is said to be known to police. Police believe his death was not a random act. IHIT also confirmed that earlier in the day last Monday Langley RCMP recovered a red 1996 GMC Jimmy associated with

Two injured as shots fired in North Delta

Delta police are investigating what they are calling a targeted shooting in North Delta last Friday night. At approximately 9:45 p.m., DPD responded to a call about shots being fired in the 8800-block of Delvista Drive. When police arrived officers located two people who had been shot. They received non-life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. A number of police resources were called into the area, including the Lower Mainland District Police Dog Services, however, the male suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and was not located. No description of the suspect is available. “It’s early in the investigation, but we believe this is a targeted incident, related to a previous dispute,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “It is not believed to be associated to gang activity.” Leykauf said another police incident that occurred the same evening in the 9500-block of Scott Road was not related to the matter on Delvista Drive, and is under the jurisdiction of Surrey RCMP. “We understand events of this nature are very concerning to the community. Our officers want to thank residents in that neighbourhood for their cooperation with police. We continue to work hard to advance this investigation,” added Leykauf.

Former Delta MP looks to run in South Surrey-White Rock again SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Former Delta MP KerryLynne Findlay continues her attempt at a political comeback. Findlay announced Monday she’ll seek the Conservative nomination in South Surrey-White Rock in next year’s federal election. “(The riding) deserves an experienced representative in the federal government who knows how to navigate in Ottawa, who knows how to get results, and who is skilled at both listening and taking action,” Findlay’s web page states. It’s the same riding she ran in last December in

FILE PHOTO

Former Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay is seeking the Conservative nomination in South Surrey-White Rock. a by-election she lost to Liberal Gordon Hogg. As the Conservative candidate, Findlay finished with 42.1 per cent of the vote to Hogg’s 47.5 per cent. The South Surrey-White

Rock seat became vacant when Conservative MP Dianne Watts, Surrey’s former mayor, vacated it to run for the leadership of the provincial Liberals. Having now moved back

to White Rock, Findlay was a Conservative cabinet minister in Stephen Harper’s government from 2011 to 2015. After winning the Conservative stronghold of Delta-Richmond East in 2011 with 54.2 per cent of the vote, the rookie MP rapidly ascended the ranks to become minister of national revenue. In the 2015 federal election, when Delta was reconfigured into a new riding combining South Delta and North Delta, things didn’t go well for Findlay as she lost to Liberal Carla Qualtrough by 9,000 votes. Findlay unsuccessfully ran as Canadian Alliance candidate in 2001.

Home sales in region hit 17-year April low

More sellers but fewer buyers. That was the story in Delta and throughout Metro Vancouver’s real estate scene last month. According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, residential property sales in the region saw a small increase over the previous month, but a 27.4 per cent decrease from sales recorded in April 2017. Last month’s sales were also 22.5 per cent below the 10-year April sales average. “Market conditions are changing. Home sales declined in our region last month to a 17-year April low and home sellers have become more active than we’ve seen in the past three years,” said board president Phil Moore. “The mortgage requirements that the federal government implemented this year have, among other factors, diminished home buyers’ purchasing power and they’re being felt on the buyer side

today. “Home buyers have more breathing room this spring. They have more selection to choose from and less demand to compete against,” he said. The benchmark price for a detached single-family house in Ladner last month was $1,004,800, a slight decrease from the previous month and just four per cent higher than at this time last year. The benchmark price in Tsawwassen was $1,256,500, almost unchanged from the previous month and up just over five per cent in the past year. The benchmark price for a townhouse was $786,100 in Ladner and $781,300 in Tsawwassen, up slightly from the previous month and roughly 13 per cent higher than a year ago. The benchmark price for a condo was $472,600 in Ladner and $513,600 in Tsawwassen, up marginally over March but roughly 20 per cent higher than at this time in 2017.

More eateries and service-oriented businesses will soon open as Tsawwassen Commons continues to take shape. Novy Cheema, associate director of real estate for Gracorp Capital Advisors Inc., said several tenants have opened in the last few months with more to open this summer. Among those close to opening are Two Stones Grill and SMK Smokery and Bar, which had originally planned to open as Wings but the owner has since changed the name and concept slightly. Cheema said the restaurants, which will be located in the same area as Wendy’s and Booster Juice, are both completing their tenant improvements and should be open in June. They are also awaiting release of their building permit with a target opening of this summer.” Kahuna Dog, a quick service restaurant serving gourmet hot dogs, does not have a confirmed opening date. Cheema also confirmed they are in negotiations with a craft beer distillery, but nothing has been finalized yet. Club 16 Trevor Linden Fitness, which was con-

firmed in March and will be located next to Home Sense, does not have a confirmed opening date yet, but Cheema said it is likely early to mid-fall. Anchored by Walmart, Canadian Tire, Rona and others, the 100-store mall on Tsawwassen First Nation land was expected to open in October 2016 in conjunction with the adjacent Tsawwassen Mills, but a slow retail market stalled construction.

Residents will soon be enjoying double doubles and munching on Timbits in East Ladner. Last Monday night, Delta council gave final approval to a bylaw and issued a development permit to allow for a small Tim Hortons on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street. Southborough Investments has been trying to build the restaurant since 2014, however the proximity of the drivethru to nearby homes and the hours of operation were sticking points for council, which rejected the initial proposal. A second proposal that included a higher fence and reduced hours of operation was received favourably by council. Franchisee Frank Cooke said he’s happy to

finally get to this point. “I’m happy for Ladner because it is one of the few cities in all of Canada — such a great community — that doesn’t have a Timmy’s of any sort, so it’s great stuff,” Cooke said. He said the next steps will be to get building permits to allow construction to start. Cooke is also the franchisee for the new Tim Hortons drive-thru location set to open in June at Tsawwassen Commons. “We are trying to get open a little earlier, but first week in June is where we are heading,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming, even for Tsawwassen Commons. It’s going to be great. It’s a new area with growth and with 3,000 more homes going in there, it’s nice to keep things locally. We can provide local employment and continue to give back to the community.”

guess we should have seen this coming given the house always has the advantage. Delta council’s approval of Gateway’s casino application after a two-night public hearing last week can hardly be considered surprising by anyone who has watched this proposal make its way through the process or the reception it’s received from city hall. It was clear well before people jammed the Ladner Community Centre that civic politicians who proudly subscribe to a no new borrowing policy were enamored with the idea of casino revenues financing an ever-growing list of unfunded projects that now totals over $50 million, and that’s just for parks and recreation initiatives. It also seemed evident that concerns many at the hearing had over an increase in crime were not shared by certain council members who had been offered assurances by the police chief on several occasions that he didn’t foresee a spike if the casino went ahead. Given all that it was not hard to see where this one would end up, but the speed at which a decision was rendered was eye-opening nonetheless. I take more time to pick out a movie on Netflix than council members took to weigh the six hours’ worth of submissions they received from the public over the course of the hearing. I realize it’s highly unlikely that waiting until the next scheduled meeting of council, or the one after that, would have changed the outcome, but at least it would have given the appearance that council members were ruminating about everything they had just heard. Such a delay might just have been for the optics, I know, but it would certainly have been better than the perception that the public hearing was nothing more than a Municipal Act-mandated charade and that Delta can’t get the casino built fast enough. The decision has now been made but it will still be a few years before we know for sure exactly what we’re getting. Will it be an unobtrusive revenue generator that will single-handedly improve our recreation and cultural amenities or will we be rubbing shoulders with druglords, money launderers and prostitutes like some speakers at the hearing suggested? I certainly don’t think a casino is going to ruin Delta, but it doesn’t prosper unless a lot of people end up losing.

Nail salons are so much more than just a place to prettify

I

f you need your nails painted in South Delta, you will never be without choice. Manicures, pedicures and beauty treatments are clearly popular in our affluent community. Some people scoff at these spas and salons and dismiss them as indulgence that cater to the spoilt. Think again. If you peel back the layers of a nail salon you may discover what I have: more than pampering, nail salons provide a real service to our community. My salon is usually busy with lots of activity. Customers are a cross-section of young and old, rich and working class, mothers and daughters, gal pals and professionals. The aestheticians I see are Vietnamese. They are hardworking, friendly and very tight knit. They are also very compassionate and patient, and they have to be as they are working with people’s most intimate parts, feet and hands. Sitting with my feet in a tub of water I have plenty of time to look around and I have seen some touching moments that throw aside all the clichés about nail salons. A woman escorts her husband into the salon and it’s obvious

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

he has advanced dementia. The manager rushes to guide him to his chair and tells the woman to take an hour’s respite while they give him a much-needed pedicure. He mumbles incoherently in his chair as his feet are cared for in the gentlest way. A shy young man with a pronounced limp and a cane enters the salon. He’s looking for some foot care, something he clearly cannot do himself. He is awkward and self-conscious, but soon made at ease. An elderly gentleman sits beside me. He has such hard, long toenails they have to be ground down. He’s a little selfconscious when the nail grinder starts up, but we nod and smile at each other.

A chatty lady to my right struggles to get out of her chair after having her toes and fingers painted with sparkles. She struggles to get her shoes on by herself and whispers to me she’s recently had a stroke. A giant green shoe horn appears and she laughs as she’s helped gently into her shoes by an attentive young woman. Three beauticians patiently fuss over a woman whose daughter is getting married. She’s brought a sample of her dress and they help her choose just the right matching colour. These are small but significant scenes. Our seniors, the physically and mentally challenged and the stressed need help with self-care along with tenderness and compassion. For some it may be the only time they are touched. Cosmetology is an age-old tradition. Women and men have been enhancing themselves for centuries, but it’s also therapeutic and immensely important for health and self-worth. The next time you pass a nail salon there may be more going on behind closed doors than you imagined. OPEN Grandfather not willing to DAILY! Letters

just be a good witness

Editor: Sometimes you just have to help. Last Monday as I was leaving the Town Centre Mall I was in the middle of the intersection ready to turn left onto 56th Street on a green light when a van ran the red light at a high rate of speed. The damage in that split second was incredible. Car parts and glass everywhere. As I pulled over to the curb to assist where I could, the first vehicle appeared to have minimal damage and driver looked OK. Looking to a second car involved with significant damage, I could only assume serious injury but help was already attending to that driver. Looking further up the road, the van was smashed

and had spun around facing the wrong direction. As I headed towards it, the driver jumped out and ran. At first I was confused but soon realized he was attempting to run. At 68 years of age, a Delta resident for many years, with five grandchildren in the Tsawwassen area, I was not at all comfortable with this happening in my community. Without giving it a second thought, I gave pursuit. As I reached the Subway, I screamed for help while continuing the chase round the corner towards View Crescent. I was fortunate that volunteers didn’t waste a moment, joined me and ran the individual down, got him under control as he was combatant, screaming all the while

of his innocence. He was escorted back to the scene where there were still no police. It is clear by the reaction after we captured this suspect that another person was in his vehicle and was still at large. Had we let this man go, he too would have escaped. This is our town and we need to protect it and our neighbours. These young men and I made the effort to ensure just that and I, for one, am proud of all of them. On the other hand, the police, through newspapers and TV, said we should have remained at the scene and been good witnesses. That disappoints me. When help is need, react. It is the right thing to do. Keith LaPorte

Public hearing process appeared unfairly weighted toward casino

Editor: While I was opposed to the Gateway casino project prior to last week’s public hearing, my disappointment in the process has amplified my opposition. I attended both nights as I thought this was my opportunity, as a constituent, to fairly present my position to the councillors who were elected to represent the citizens, but in my opinion, the process seemed unfairly weighted to the casino proponents. For example, representatives from the B.C. Lottery Corporation and Gateway were given unrestricted time at the podium to extol the positive benefits of the project. Both made lengthy, uninterrupted presentations more than once. Citizens, however, were given one opportunity and were strictly timed. At the end of five minutes,

a red light and an alarm would go off to let them know time was up. If they spoke beyond that, they were then stopped by the mayor. Gateway was afforded an opportunity to post glossy advertising posters along the length of the back wall. Citizens should have been made aware that they too could bring and display posters regarding their position. Just over 100 individuals spoke on the issue. What was alarming was that of those who spoke in favour of the casino project, several had disclosed or undisclosed conflicts of interest. Suppliers of Gateway, employees of BCLC and Shato Holdings were allowed to speak in favour of the project without challenge. It is disappointing that Delta council did not put a process in place to deal with conflicts

Put it to vote

Editor: Why does Delta council not put the Gateway casino issue to a public vote? If a majority of the community is in favour of going ahead then they have nothing to worry about. If not, then the project should not proceed. Simon Ruddell of interest on the part of presenters. Regardless of a resident’s support or opposition to this project, and even if a resident has no opinion at all on the matter, citizens should be concerned with how council receives input from the community. The process must be conducted with integrity and transparency. Eileen MacKenzie

Not enough land for European-style roundabouts

Editor: With reference to recent letters about the design of highway intersections, I would like to point out that there is insufficient space for the European-style roundabouts at the intersections of Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A, at 56th Street and Highway

17, and at Elliott Street and Ladner Trunk Road. There is insufficient space without major land acquisitions to provide the weaving lanes required for roundabouts to safely handle peak traffic volumes. Traffic circles are a different design for low volume intersections and a

traffic circle at Elliott Street and Ladner Trunk Road would likely have resulted in frequent collisions during high volume times. The above intersections were designed by qualified engineers and are the most practical and economic solutions. Michael Davies

The Delta Police Department will be connecting with kids during a week-long soccer camp. will also be special appearances by Delta firefighters. “Last year was a great success, with coaches having just as much fun as the kids,” said Hill. “The soccer camp is a great way for kids to interact with police officers in a relaxed and positive environment.”

Approximately 70 kids attended the inaugural camp last year. Hill said they are looking to cap registrations at 100 this summer. “This year we want to expand on the success of last year,” Hill added. “We have some very cool things

planned for the kids, including some new gear and an exciting new obstacle course.” Along with the new activities planned, the popular radar board will be back. New players will be able to set new marks, while returning players will have the opportunity to beat their speed from last year and challenge Delta police Chief Neil Dubord’s blazing foot speed of 21 km/h. An $80 early bird registration runs until June 31. After that the cost is $100, which includes the five days of instruction, swag and a visit from a special guest. School vice principal, mom and soon to be a Summits of Hope participant. Ladner’s Sarah Garr is embarking on quite the challenge this August as part of the Summits of Hope climbing team that will be travelling to Machu Picchu in Peru in support of BC Children’s Hospital. She has committed to raising $5,000 and has raised just over $1,000 so far. A vice principal at MacNeil Secondary in Richmond, Garr’s students are actively fundraising to support her and she has a community pub night fundraiser set for Saturday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Landing Pub in Ladner. The fundraising aspect is challenging because I have never done anything quite like this before and then you have the physical challenge of it,” she said. “It’s mostly getting used to the endurance — how many days in a row you are consist-

ently doing the hours on the trail and then there is the altitude aspect as well, which is unique to that area.” Training for the altitude change is next to impossible. “We will take the altitude medication beforehand, but I just don’t know how I’m going to react,”

she said. “I’m a very active person. I’ve done some major hikes and such, but never something like this. But I like to push myself physically and, of course, my interest in helping sick kids is certainly motivation enough.” When she has time, she is preparing by biking, hiking, paddle boarding and doing yoga. She adds that she will have more time to devote to training once the school year ends for her in midJuly. “I’m nervous, but I’m also quite excited,” she said. “It’s really all about your mindset and getting in that mental space to push yourself. I want to be a role model for my son and for my students.” More information on Garr’s fundraising mission can be found online at SummitsOfHope.com/ ClimberProfile/Sarah_ Garr.

Living Matters

BARBARA GUNN

Some people aspire to be in the audience of The Late Show. Others want to be on Ellen or Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune or Saturday Night Live. Not me. Sure, I happen to love Ellen, and I’m kind of fond of Vanna White and Alex Trebek. But I long to see Judge Judy. You know her. She’s the 75-year-old gal who likes to rip into people who’ve driven without insurance or painted graffiti on the neighbour’s fence. She’s a nasty one, Judy. You don’t want to speak out of turn when you’re

standing before the judge. You don’t want to mumble or stutter or slouch or look down at your hands. You don’t want to show up in her courtroom without proof that a.) your dog was attacked by the defendant’s, or that b.) you did pay the rent the plaintiff claims is owing. Otherwise, well, Judy is apt to call you an idiot, laugh in your face and ask Byrd to toss you out. It’s fascinating. “Oh,” the husband will say, wandering into the TV room most afternoons. “I see you’re watching Judge Judy again.” “Shhh!” I will say. “She just called that guy a stupid, lying weasel!” “Wow,” the husband will reply. “Wow is right! And she said the defendant is even more idiotic for going out with him for six months!” OK, OK, I suppose I could be watching something a little more, um, intellectually rewarding. You know, like The History Channel or PBS.

But there’s something rather thrilling watching Judy in her element, savaging the poor souls who stand before her bench. And to imagine being in her courtroom? I’d like nothing more than to hear her bellow my favourites. You know. “’Yeah’ is not an answer! Is that a YES or a NO???” Or: “BE QUIET AND PUT YOUR HAND DOWN! If I want to hear from you, I’ll say so!” I have no idea whether Judy behaves like this when she takes off her robes, but I rather think not. If the real Judy is anything like the TV Judy, I doubt there’d be anyone willing to style her hair, paint her toenails, fill her gas tank or accept her dinner invitation. As I say, fascinating. Someday, if I’m really, really lucky, I will win the lottery, meet George Clooney and sit in Judy’s courtroom. She’s utterly nasty, that’s for sure. But nasty can be such fun.

IODE funding helps maintain the foods program at SDSS’ Alternate School.

IODE continues its support of South Delta Alternate School positive social connection through sharing a meal. A total of 16 students in grades 10 to 12 attend the school, coming from Tsawwassen and Ladner to learn in a supportive, safe and challenging environment. Students can progress in their studies with individual guidance for their personal programs. One objective is for students to return to a mainstream program if feasible but often students remain and complete their full graduation.

Close to 100 per cent of Grade 12 students in the Alternate School graduate annually. The Delta School District consistently ranks among the highest provincial graduation rates at 91.2 per cent, in part due to the value placed on special programming. Many students have continued their studies in post-secondary and successfully completed certificates, diplomas and bachelor degrees. Some have even gone on to become professional cooks.

SPECTACULAR MOMENTS ARE JUST A CLICK AWAY… *ACTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Gum Disease Prevention & Management Gum Disease is very common among North American adults, but can be easily prevented! Our Ladner dental team provides preventive and restorative gum disease treatments for the Delta community.

What is Gum Disease? The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy.

Gum Disease Signs & Symptoms: · Bleeding gums – Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss.

Joyce Pomeroy rides a wave during a family trip to Mexico.

Mom paddles ashore in style

Brian Pomeroy shares this amusing tale of his mom, Joyce Pomeroy, and her adventures in Mexico. The back story is that my wife, daughter and I took my mom to Mexico for a nice winter getaway. We rented kayaks at the beach and set out for an hour or two. When it was time to come in, the instructors were on the beach and about to wade into the surf to help her in. My mom, 70 years young at the time, is not one to ask for help and

loves being independent, so before the beach staff could swim over and guide her and her kayak to shore, she just caught a breaking wave and surfed in on the crest of it. The look on the faces of everyone on the beach was priceless. All morning the instructors had spent time rescuing over-confident tourists that had refused help and tried to paddle into the beach by themselves. Pretty much every time the kayaks would tip over and

the occupant would wash up on the shore with the beach staff rushing to help pick them up off the sand. My mom hopped out of her safely landed kayak, handed the instructor her paddle and calmly walked up the beach. I think she didn’t realize how impressive her arrival was, but luckily enough I managed to snap a picture as she rode that wave to prove to all her kids and grandkids that she can still “hang 10” with the best of them.

Defending champs win thriller

Ladner Pioneers will host Royal City Thursday in rematch of WCSLA finals MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The defending West Coast Senior Lacrosse League champions opened their season with a dramatic victory in the provincial capital. Mike Berekoff scored two goals in the final minute, including the game winner with just two seconds remaining, to lift the Ladner Pioneers to an 11-10 victory over the Victoria Wolves on Sunday night. Berekoff’s heroics capped an impressive return to his hometown team after not playing last season. He finished the night with a hat trick, along with two assists. The Wolves looked to be on their way to victory when Josh Nelson made it 10-8 with 7:04 remaining. Nate Clare scored with 3:18 left, then set-up Berekoff’s tying goal. A big faceoff winner by Patrick Szabo gave Ladner final possession. Szabo was one of three 2017 Junior “A” Islander graduates in the line-up, joining Mitch Winter and Jack Berry. Winter is continuing a family tradition that saw his dad Tim thrive in a Pioneer uniform for years. His late grandfather Rod Winter was the team’s longtime general manager. The Pioneers were left with a number of vacancies on their roster after last season’s memorable run that concluded with a fifth place finish at the President’s Cup in Six Nations, ON.

Tyler Kirkby is among the key returning players for the defending West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association champion Ladner Pioneers. “We lost about 10 players for a variety of reasons,” said Ladner head coach Ross Frehlick. “We have managed to bring in some junior grads and sign some new guys too.” Among the additions is goaltender Zach Wickett who will make his debut on Thursday when the Pioneers host Royal City in a rematch of last year’s West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association Championship series.

The hometown product played last season for the WLA’s Langley Thunder. He will share the crease with veterans Nathan Wilson and Rob Cook for now. The Pioneers begin the season with defensive standouts Sam Clare and Mike Avery sidelined with injuries. Both are expected back at some point. Avery was named the league’s top defender in 2017.

“Our goal is to be in the top two and hopefully not see (President’s Cup host) Nanaimo until the final,” added Frehlick who knows that would mean a nationals berth would be locked up. “There are always guys interested in playing here, especially when the President’s Cup is in B.C. But until they actually sign, it doesn’t mean anything. Regardless, it’s not going to disrupt the core of this team.”

We would like to welcome Ryan and his family to the Tigers organization,” said GM and head coach Shaun Clouston. Earlier, goaltender Brady Euerby signed with the Giants after being their fifth round pick (103rd overall). The Ladner native, who is also a standout baseball player with the B.C. Premier League’s North Delta Blue Jays, played for the DHA Elite 15s this past season. “When we drafted Braedy last year, we knew we were drafting an athletic, hard-working goaltender with a tremendous upside,” said Giants GM Glen Hanlon. “You can never have enough quality goaltenders in your organization and Braedy is a proven winner who will compete hard for playing time in the seasons to come. We’re thrilled to welcome Braedy and his family to the Vancouver Giants organization.”

Old and new lead Islanders to impressive start MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It took all of one game for the Delta Islanders to surpass their 2017 accomplishments. The Islanders opened the 2018 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season Saturday night with a 10-5 victory over the Port Coquitlam Saints at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Given what happened a year when the club finished with a 4-170 record and only managed to defeat Nanaimo (1-18-11) and Burnaby (3-15-3) twice, it was an encouraging start to say the least. The Saints came into Ladner with a 1-0 record and finished third in the league last season at 13-8-0. Yet it was the Islanders that set the tone early by jumping out to a 3-1 lead then taking full control with three unanswered to close out the second period. The game was the full-time junior “A” debut for a significant number of players — many that could still be playing intermediate under the old age format — as co-head coaches Kyle Goundrey and Andy Ogilvie lean on that young talent to change the team’s fortunes. “Some our young guys are used to winning and some of these older guys are not,” smiled Goundrey. “Hopefully it can pay off (going) with these younger guys because it’s expected of them. “They were missing some guys (still at school) tonight and so were we. But it was

It’s something that these guys need to get used to is nobody comes in here and walks on us.” The Islanders relied on their experi-

ence and youth to get the job done. Player Riley Phillips, the lone remaining member of the 2016 championship team, led the way offensively with five goals. Rookie standout Haiden Dickson

added a hat trick. Singles came from Connor Evers, Ryan Jones, Dawson Trimble and Sekawnee Baker. Evers is among the young additions at the back end of the floor. The former Team B.C. captain is coming off his freshman season at University at Alabama Huntsville and was a key member of a Ridge Meadows team that finished second at intermediate “A” provincials last year. Homegrown products Max Stalling, Jared Moloci, Jake Cantlon, Mark Yingling and Dickson are other Team B.C. alumni who were in the Delta line-up on Saturday, while Jon Greig is another valuable defensive addition. Among the few bright spots last season was goaltender Brody Harris. He picked up where he left off with a stellar outing, making 38 saves. When the Saints did make a second period charge to make it a 5-4 game, Delta didn’t wilt and instead responded with a pair of goals from Dickson and another from Phillips in the final four minutes of the frame. Responding to adversity was rare a year ago. “Our offence needed to move the ball. They knew when they were just burying their heads it wasn’t working for them. When we started to move the ball again we got the opportunities. Hopefully they know that now as they better understand our systems,” added Goundrey. The Islanders return to action Saturday when the Burnaby Lakers visit Ladner at 7 p.m.

DOMESTIC HELP WANTED PARTON, Leslie J

LAWLOR (Dutton) Marguerita “Rita” Mary May 9, 1934 - April 13, 2018

Revised Venue information: The venue for the service for Rita Lawlor is now at the United Church, 4960 48 Avenue, Ladner on May 12 at 2:00 pm. Reception will follow at the Ladner Royal Canadian Legion. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.stettlerfuneralhome.com

On May 3, at age 64, his fierce battle ended. Our sorrow is deep, yet we rejoice that Les is now with his Saviour Jesus. Predeceased by parents William and Beatrice Parton. Born in Alberta, raised in Kerrisdale, Les and his young family settled in Tsawwassen, BC. Devoted husband to Deborah (Robinson), loving father to Evelyn and William, brother to Gerry, Doug (Linda), Margaret (Gavin) Hill and Mary (Mike) Jackson, and uncle to their children. Attended Langara College and enjoyed a Real Estate Appraisal career in Prince George and Vancouver. A talented piper, he played in many bands starting with White Spot Jr. A skilled sailor, he preferred motor sports on dirt, snow and sea. In retirement Les and Deborah RV’d around North America. Les gathered friends wherever he went and will be greatly missed. Our gratitude to those that tended him physically and spiritually this past year. A Celebration of Life will be held at Tsawwassen Alliance Church, 4951 12th Ave, Delta on Saturday, May 12 at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice. Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

MCQUEEN, Jack March 22, 1932 - May 2, 2018 Jack is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Steve, and his daughters Nancy Bullock (Todd) and Carol Neufeld (Rob), his grandchildren Kate, Ryan, Jason, Camden and Seth as well as many nieces and nephews in Ontario. He was predeceased by his son Glenn (Terry). Jack was born and raised in Toronto sharing his wonderful parents John and Catherine with his brothers Bob (Helen) and Bill (Bev) and his kid sister, Sheila (Eric). He spent many days as a small fair haired caddy, often lugging double bags around Weston Golf course; the beginning of his love of golf and his Ben Hogan swing. His career in the Graphic Arts world spanned 65 years while also teaching Lithography at night school for 20 years, he was always proud that he never missed a class. Neither rain nor snow stopped him from riding his bike every day to the subway, often wearing garbage bags to protect him from the weather, much to his daughters’ embarrassment. The big move to the coast 28 years ago allowed him to spend many days at Beach Grove Golf Club. He was an active member of the Boundary Bay Lions for 20 years. His speciality was making Mickey Mouse pancakes at the beach every Father’s Day. Jack had an entrepreneurial spirit that kept him busy. The last 10 years, with his pockets full of dog biscuits he became a dog walker extraordinaire aka Pet Buddy. Jack was also known to many as ‘Mr. Health’, never shy about his belief in the benefits of Natural Health or the joys of juicing. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at his home at 1413 Compston Crescent, Beach Grove on Saturday May 12th from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Delta Hospital would be appreciated.
