Delta’s tree canopy isn’t disappearing as feared. That was the update provided to Delta council last week from civic staff. A survey found that between 2004 and 2016, the canopy in Ladner not only didn’t thin
but increased by 2.4 per cent while Tsawwassen saw a modest 1.7 per cent increase. In North Delta, the tree canopy was almost unchanged, up 0.2 per cent. Two years ago council was contemplating introducing an even tougher tree protection bylaw. CIVIC: see Page 3

Harvie unveils council slate Five join Delta’s former top bureaucrat on the Achieving for Delta ticket SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
George Harvie made his mayoralty bid official last night. At an announcement attended by supporters at Tsawwassen Springs, Delta’s former chief administrative officer declared his candidacy as well as unveiled five council candidates who will be running on his Achieving for Delta slate. “In the face of unpredictability, uncertainty and constant change, I offer a stable, steady hand. I’ve put together my dream team, each with their own record of achieving for Delta. Together, we will keep Delta debt-free and our taxes low,” said Harvie. The former CAO, who officially retired earlier this month, had been rumoured as a candidate to succeed Lois Jackson, who won’t be seeking reelection as mayor after almost 20 years, but it wasn’t until last week that his campaign manager confirmed Harvie’s intention to run. Shortly thereafter two members of his slate — Alicia Guichon and former fire chief Dan Copeland — announced via social media they would also be running under the

Achieving for Delta banner. A young farmer and entrepreneur, Guichon opened Backroads Farm Market four years ago, while Copeland spent 25 years as a firefighter, the last 11 as Delta’s fire chief. Last night the rest of the slate was named, which includes Param Grewal, an entrepreneur, social activist and advocate for the rights of farm workers, Cal Traversy, who
recently retired after a 27-year career as a police officer, and Dylan Kruger, a constituency assistant to Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton. Harvie, who had been Delta’s CAO since 2001, spoke of his record and what he’s been able to help Delta achieve over the years, including eliminating the city’s debt and the preservation of a huge portion of Burns Bog.
“We will work hard to improve the state of Delta’s recreational facilities, and work with the school board to improve Delta’s fields and tracks. We will keep Delta safe by investing in our police and fire departments, and we will keep young families in Delta by approving more housing choices in our town centres. We will do this while taking action to protect our green space
and preserve our agricultural land.” Harvie said the Achieving for Delta slate is excited to begin knocking on doors and engaging with the community. Two-term Coun. Sylvia Bishop announced her bid for the mayor’s chair in March when she unveiled the five-member Team Delta slate. The election takes place Oct. 20.
Civic politicians stopped short of new tree legislation
CONTINUED from Page 1 Civic politicians stopped short of having staff come up with new legislation, instead asking for an update on the tree loss situation and what other municipalities were doing. It was only three years ago Delta updated its tree bylaw to allow one tree to be cut without an arborist’s report, or outside of an emergency, every 24 months instead of one each calendar year. Some of the other
changes adopted at that time included requiring five replacement trees for every tree cut or damaged without a permit or contrary to a permit, and removing the maximum $2,000 permit fee to ensure applications for a large number of trees being cut pay their fair share. The amended bylaw also provided council with the ability to reject applications for 24 months where trees were cut in violation of the legislation.

One of three charged in crime ring pleads guilty English Bluff Road home raided last December IAN JACQUES

A Delta woman has pleaded guilty to numerous charges for her role in a recent stolen property and identity theft ring busted by Delta police at a home in Tsawwassen. Kimberly Markland, 42, faced 19 charges that included possession of stolen property, identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, unauthorized FILE PHOTO

use of a credit card, fraud under $5,000, possession of a forged credit card, forgery of a credit card, possession of a forgery instrument, trafficking in identity information, forgery, failure to comply with a probation order, theft and possession of a controlled substance. She recently turned herself into authorities and appeared in Surrey provincial court last week where she was sentenced to 18 months in jail followed by two years of probation. Zackery Tanner, 29, of Richmond, is facing 24 charges, while Jeannette Gibson, 47, of Surrey, is facing 15 charges. Both suspects have been released on a number of conditions and are scheduled to next appear in court in March of 2019 for a preliminary inquiry to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial. Community concerns about activities in a house on English Bluff Road, combined with a timely
vehicle stop, launched a Delta police investigation in May 2017. By late December, police executed a search warrant on the house and located a number of stolen items, including highend mountain bikes and construction tools, along with a fraudulent credit card making operation, including card readers and a credit card embossing machine. “Our officers were able to return several items to their rightful owners,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “Officers also contacted several credit card holders as well whose property was found in the house, and confirmed that many of the cards had previously been stolen out of vehicles, from throughout the Lower Mainland.” Leykauf said many of the stolen bikes were disassembled and then reassembled using different parts, likely in an attempt to make the bikes more difficult to be identified.

Police reach out at community dialogue
Chatter on social media prompts department to hold public meeting at Tsawwassen Library IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta police hosted a community dialogue last Wednesday night in Tsawwassen with a focus on property crime, theft and general safety. The meeting was called following commentary from within the Tsawwassen Loop Facebook group expressing policing concerns. DPD reached out to the group suggesting the idea of a community meeting. “We are finding more and more that people just don’t call the Delta Police Department with their issues,” said Delta police Chief Neil Dubord. “They instead take to social media to air their concerns. What we are trying to do more is to monitor what is being said on those social media sites and respond to those concerns as best we can.” Dubord told the small gathering of residents in the Tsawwassen Library meeting room that overall property crime is down in Tsawwassen this year.
“I will say that in the first part of 2018 specifically break-ins are up as compared to the first part of 2017 and 2016,” said Dubord. “It’s an interesting thing because property crime can be driven by literally two or three offenders in an area. What we find — certainly from theft from autos — one or two prolific offenders will go through 200 cars in an area at night. They will check door handles and if they get inside, they will take anything that they can.” Dubord also pointed to a recent investigation that concluded at a home on English Bluff Road where frequent offenders were staying and committing crimes in the community. He said the investigation, which included surveillance and undercover work, took seven months. In the end, arrests were made and 58 charges were recommended. “We are currently monitoring four or five houses in Tsawwassen that have those kinds of offenders in them,” he said. “Often

happening, but it is a small number of people. “Is the community any more dangerous than it
has been? I don’t think it is any more dangerous than it has been, however, there have been some high-pro-
file issues and certainly we continue to work through those issues.” Residents posed other questions around police communications, traffic concerns along 56th Street and the perceived lack of visibility of officers in Tsawwassen. “There is a lot of fear from what I hear in my neighbourhood and people not wanting to leave their house,” said one resident. “It’s just really changed. I’ve lived in my home for over 40 years.” Dubord said staffing levels are consistent in every community from North Delta to South Delta. Const. Leisa Schaefer, district liaison officer for the Tsawwassen Community Police Station, offered tips on home security and said residents can come by the community station to get more information and assistance. As the meeting wrapped up, residents thanked the police for the open dialogue and said they looked forward to more sessions in the future.

Delta has awarded an architectural contract for the South Delta Recreation Centre accessibility retrofit project. Delta council has approved a contract for $135,385 to Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects Inc. In order to establish a detailed constructionready design, along with a cost estimate, an architectural consultant is required. Delta is hoping project details will be prepared for possible construction in 2019. The project has been on Delta’s books since 2016 when an accessibility audit and subsequent feasibility study were conducted to determine options to address accessibility barriers at the Tsawwassen facility. According to Delta, the most significant challenges are the lack of elevator access to the upper floor and the shortage of

here are many fixtures on what has become a crowded community events calendar here in Delta, but there’s one celebration that stands out from all the rest when it comes to staying power. Established all the way back in 1896, Ladner Pioneer May Days, which returns to Memorial Park this weekend, is in a class by itself when it comes to longevity, almost as old as Delta itself. To put that in some perspective, May Days had already been held for more than 60 years by the time the George Massey Tunnel opened and ushered in modern day Delta. It’s not easy to keep any annual celebration going, whether that’s due to insufficient human resources (read volunteers), waning interest from the public or time simply passing it by. Those afflictions and more have claimed many an event over the years in these parts, including everything from the World Championship Wheelbarrow Race and Miss Delta pageant to the annual Christmas tree bonfire at Deas Island Regional Park and, more recently, the Ladner Christmas parade and Grand Prix of Art. While those and others have disappeared from the landscape, May Days has endured, blending traditions like the May Queen and May Pole dance that date back to the beginning with activities of the 21st century. What I love most about May Days, and why I think it has been a mainstay on the local calendar for more than a century (beyond the hard work of countless volunteers over the years), is because it has multi-generational appeal. I cringe when I hear the phrase, “There’s something for everyone,” primarily because it’s overused and often oversold, but in the case of May Days, it’s absolutely true. Kids, parents, grandparents… every age enjoys the fair. Whether you’re a music lover, a thrill seeker, a crafter, a foodie, a ball fan or just love to sit back and watch a parade go by, May Days has you covered. Back when my son was little I can remember having to rush home on the Friday of May Days weekend because he couldn’t wait another minute to get to the fairground. He’s 20 now so the carnival doesn’t hold the same appeal, but I can pretty much guarantee that later this week I’m going to be asked, “Hey, when are we going to May Days?”
Filling in the transportation gaps for senior population
I
may not be able to walk as far or as fast as I used to, but it will be a sad day if I lose the ability to drive my car. I do not have a spouse, my kids live one tunnel and two bridges away, and I covet my independence. For seniors living south of the Fraser River who have to rely on our transit system, attending an appointment in the city is like planning a trek to outer Mongolia. A 15-minute doctor’s appointment downtown can take four to six hours return, often waiting for buses in bad weather. My wish is for TransLink to bring back the South Delta 601 express bus to Vancouver, and in North Delta, a community shuttle to connect seniors and others directly to the Scott Road SkyTrain station. Isobel MacKenzie, the BC Seniors Advocate, just released her latest report titled Seniors Transportation — Affordable, Appropriate and Available. The report lists 15 recommendations to improve existing systems and services, all of which can be found on the advocate’s website. Recommendation number 15 is a new idea that takes a page from the Uber/Lyft model and integrates it into our current home support services. It reads: “The government work with the health authorities and the affected unions to establish a community drives program that will be administered through the home
Community Comment ML BURKE
support program in all areas of British Columbia. The principles of access and equity that are enshrined in the home and community care program should be applied.” In other words, expand the home support program to include drivers who will be paid for their time and mileage. These could include current support workers who want to work more hours than their split shifts between mornings and evenings. Drivers would be vetted for criminal records, driving abstracts, vehicles and insurance. They would also get basic training in transferring frail clients to and from their destinations. The current Taxi-Saver program, which the provincial government subsidizes, saves lowerincome seniors 50 per cent if they are registered with HandyDART. A one-hour taxi ride is about $100. A one-hour publicly funded home support worker can cost
less than $38. It’s a win-win. Taxi drivers don’t have to accept the 50 per cent off coupons and many don’t like picking up the frail elderly because of the time it takes to complete their rides. Having trained drivers dedicated to this demographic is a good idea, from an economic standpoint and for the safety, security and socialization of our most vulnerable citizens. Other benefits to having home support drivers matched to clients are the relationships that develop. A driver might be booked for two or three hours a week to take their client to appointments, shopping or visiting a friend. For many isolated seniors with mobility problems, this weekly outing would be a highlight. It also assists friends and family who may not be able to volunteer much time. But those volunteers should get a tax break for mileage costs. If we are serious about supporting seniors to stay longer in their homes, services need to be available for all income levels. In the meantime, let’s get bathrooms into SkyTrain stations and transit exchanges, and please bring back the 601 express bus to downtown. Commuters and seniors would love that. ML Burke retired from the health sector to work on issues such as affordable housing. She sits on the Delta Seniors Planning Team and the B.C. Seniors Advocate’s Advisory Council.

Letters
AG asked to put casino question on fall ballot Editor: This letter has been sent to Attorney General David Eby. As you are most likely aware, there is a proposal for a new casino in Delta. I am writing to you because you are in a position to know the most true information pertaining to casinos and the crime they attract. In various news articles you have been quoted as saying • B.C. has become internationally infamous for money laundering. • Law enforcement in casinos has been a massive failure. • There is a possible connection between money laundering and the out of control real estate market. On May 1 and 2, Delta held a public hearing regarding the proposed casino. Over 100 people spoke and when you remove those who would make money from the casino, directly or indirectly, the majority of speakers spoke against the casino. Immediately following that public hearing, Delta council approved the application for rezoning
$3 million better than nothing
Editor: Re: $3 million from casino is chump change, letter to the editor, May 18 According to Greg J. Edwards, the $3 million coming annually from the casino is chump change. Seriously? If he and other like-minded taxpayers of Delta were to consider this more rationally, then they might possibly appreciate the fact that an extra $3 million a year in the City of Delta’s coffers is better than nothing. As my nana used to say: “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” A. Cameron the land. Since that time the majority of letters and articles in the local paper have opposed the casino. Because of your direct knowledge of the complete scope of criminal activity that casinos attract, I am requesting your assistance and the assistance of the provincial government in having a question inserted on the municipal ballot, in South Delta only, for this October’s election that asks: Do you support the construction of a casino in South Delta? On its website, the B.C. Lottery Corporation says numerous times it wants to listen to the community, engage with the public, and that it requires the
local government to seek and consider adequate community input before committing to a new casino. It appears that Delta council has only received input from a very small percentage of the population regarding the project that is going to affect South Delta for perpetuity. If the question is presented on the civic election ballot that gives every voter in South Delta the opportunity to express their opinion under the scrutiny of a democratic election. Therefore I request your assistance to have the question put on the ballot. Greg Hoover
Victim urges drivers to pay attention Editor: This letter has been long time in the making. On Dec. 22, 2017 around 5:30 p.m. I was crossing Ladner Trunk Road heading to Trenant Park Square. I was hit by a car driven by a man who was only aware of me at the last minute. He remained at the scene and talked with the police from what I was told. I broke both legs (left knee, right ankle) and spent two months in the hospital. I wish to thank a lovely young woman named Emily for holding my
hand and staying at my side until the paramedics arrived. I also thank the paramedics for being so patient and compassionate, not to mention knowledgeable. Thank you, Chris and Cathy (I hope I didn’t get your names wrong). I am making progress but finding that I am filled with terror at the thought of crossing the streets alone again. While I understand life is overwhelming, do everyone a favour and don’t drive unless you are completely alert to pedestrian and other traffic.
My boyfriend almost got hit the other night by a young man in a black truck on 54A Street and Maple Crescent who was driving aggressively and not slowing down. Human beings are no competition for motor vehicles. Put down your phones or whatever you are distracted by and slow down please. The corner I got hit at is an especially bad one. Editor: Re: Valuable farmland being gobbled up by pot, letter to the editor, May 16 I’m quite offended by Tina Doughty’s disappointment and her uneducated opinion. It’s painfully obvious by what she’s written that she has done zero research on the subject of medical marijuana. My wife has a rare blood

cancer called multiple myeloma. The doctors told her in October 2015 she had one month to live. She was offered no treatment due to such a short time to live. A close friend enlightened us that there is an extract from the marijuana plant that is called phoenix tears. With a small drop of this oil the size of a grain
of rice daily, she is sitting across from me right now. The last test says the white blood cell count has increased by 90 per cent. So when I read an uneducated opinion in the paper I take great exception. We live in the information age and there’s a site called Google. Perhaps Doughty should try it. Aidan Pringle

Earthwise ‘buddies’ helping keep seniors in the garden
If you are a senior who loves to garden but feels you could sometimes use a helping hand, the Earthwise Garden Buddies program might be ideal for you. Garden Buddies is a gardening together program that reaches out to seniors who live at home and would like to continue gardening for health and enjoyment. Each senior is paired with a trained Earthwise volunteer, and together they will work on new or existing gardening pro-
jects, bond over a common interest and enjoy each other’s company. Garden Buddies is not a garden service provided by Earthwise, but rather a program that aims to establish a relationship of trust, knowledge sharing and support as the volunteer and senior collaborate their skills. The volunteer would visit regularly for one- to two-hour sessions over several months. Installing a bird feeder and planting bird friendly flowers, working together

to remove weeds and installing herb pots on a balcony are just a few examples of the types of projects that could be completed. In addition to keeping seniors active, Garden Buddies helps to harness the healing power of nature to improve wellbeing and social connectedness. Gardeners across the world know that getting outside and into the soil brightens the mood and eases stress. Research shows that friendly soil bacteria can even act as an antidepressant, and gardening with a friend has been shown to increase these benefits. The program can be equally rewarding for the volunteers, who will gain the opportunity to share knowledge and experience and learn from another generation of gardeners. “Through this program, volunteers can contribute to their communities by helping seniors continue to live at home and stay independent,” says Patricia Fleming, Earthwise Society’s executive director. “For the seniors, it is a great opportunity to meet new people in their neighbourhood, to stay active and to continue to enjoy gardening.” Earthwise will train volunteers in the necessary skills through several free workshops and gardening sessions at the Earthwise Garden. Promising visit to nursery doesn’t always bear fruit
Living Matters
BARBARA GUNN
Right about now, everyone’s at the nursery. They’re scoping out the hanging baskets. They’re buying gardening gloves. They’re picking up watering cans and bird feeders and ceramic pots and flats of beans and sweet peas and petunias. I love the nursery in the way a gymnast loves the gym or a handyman loves the hardware store. Or — maybe not. After all, a handyman loves the hardware store because he works magic with the stuff he buys there. Not the case with me and the nursery.
The gardening store is my happy place. The garden, not so much. Still, I try. “Ooooh,” I swooned the other day. My husband and I were you know where, and I was eyeballing the annuals. “Those little cornflowers are so pretty! Wouldn’t they pair perfectly with these pink geraniums?” “Didn’t you get those last year?” he asked. “And didn’t they end up dead?” I shot him a look. “OK!” I said. “So I did something wrong!” This is the issue with the garden and me. Most years, I do something wrong. Or perhaps it’s that I don’t do something right. I can’t really tell, but frankly, it hardly makes a difference. At the nursery, everything looks so, well, healthy. And happy. And hard to resist. “I want to give the vegetable garden a go again,” I informed the husband. “Let’s get six pots each
of kale, broccoli, carrots, beans, peppers and beets.” “Really?” said the husband. “What do you mean — ‘really’?” I asked. “Last year, the kale became infested with something and we had to rip it up. The carrots had holes in them and the beets never grew.” The husband has a good memory. The nursery, let’s just say, has such promise. And at this time of year, it’s packed with people who are eager to inject their property with colour and their vegetable plots with bounty. Some year, I’m hoping that some of the nursery’s magic will rub off on me, and that I’ll be able to walk away with a few things that might not perish before the end of the season. Until then, think I’ll get me a nice little bird bath. I think it would look really sharp in the yard, and odds are, it may even survive.

As part of National Police Week, the Delta Police Department and its many community partners hosted Delta Police Day at the Ladner Leisure Centre last Thursday. The day brought together the local police as well as RCMP and other groups for a day of displays, interactive activities, demonstrations from the dog unit and a visit from Air 1, the RCMP helicopter. Const. Christy Mohr (below), a member of the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, demonstrates the robots and flying drones, while Chief Neil Dubord (middle left) makes sure everyone gets a sticker. Historic fair back for another great weekend
Under the Sea theme chosen for this year’s Ladner Pioneer May Days through Facebook vote Memorial Park will be the place to be this weekend as Ladner Pioneer May Days returns for another year of fun and excitement. The historic annual fair, which dates back all the way to 1896, has festivities beginning Friday evening and carrying on through Saturday and Sunday. “May Days has been around for so long. Everybody that does something for May Days and helps out with May Days has stepped up again this year,” says event chairperson Jennifer Scott. “People help out and get the job done.” The fun includes carnival rides, a petting zoo, paddle boats, pony rides, gold panning with Yukon Dan, a Delta Gymnastics Tumbling Tent, roving entertainment from Stories on Wheels and more. There will be live music acts on the main

stage Saturday and Sunday as well as a May Days market. May Days has an Under the Sea theme this year, which was decided via voting on Facebook. Sunday’s parade takes place at noon. The traditional May Pole Dance and crowning of the May Queen ceremony also takes place Sunday following the parade. May Days will have a variety of food trucks on site at the park as well as a beer garden. A new addition to the event this year is Metro Vancouver’s Water Wagon, a refillable water bottle station, Scott notes. She adds ElectroRecycle will be at the fair, accepting small appliances and other items for recycling. Scott says May Days is always looking for volunteers to help. The event’s web page can be found at www.ladnermaydays.com.

Entertainment on park stage
The main stage at Ladner May Days will be busy throughout Saturday and Sunday. A demonstration from Tactix Gym kicks off proceedings at 10 a.m. Saturday while contestants from this year’s Delta Idol singing competition have been invited to perform at 11 a.m. The Delta Concert Band, which is about to embark on a two-week playing tour of northern England and parts of Scotland, goes on at 1 p.m. The local band, made up of more than 45 adult amateur musicians, has been an entertainment
fixture in the community for more than 50 years and is recognized as one of the top concert bands in the Lower Mainland. Cover band None of the Above, which plays classic rock along with some blues and pop tunes, is set to play at 3:30 p.m. Sunday sees a community worship service at 9:30 a.m. and then the traditional May Pole Dance and Crowning of 2018 May Queen at 1:30 p.m. The Brookswood Country Band, a talented arrangement of local country musicians, goes on at 3:30 p.m.
The craft fair has a new name this year, the May Days Market, to reflect a wider variety of vendors.
May Days Market to feature 25 vendors The Ladner Pioneer May Days craft fair has a new name this year. The May Days Market will feature approximately 25 vendors, says market
coordinator Shannon Crofton-Hendy. “There will be jewelry, baked goods, Tupperware, handmade fashion items, henna tattoos, aroma-
therapy and many other items,” says CroftonHendy. Patrons will find the market near the Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre
for Children, close to the entrance to Memorial Park. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Exciting mix of food vendors coming to fair Those enjoying the fun at Ladner Pioneer May Days will have plenty of options when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat on the fairgrounds this weekend. Organizers are really excited about this year’s food trucks for May Days, says food coordinator Khya Fellingham. She explains that not only are many of the traditional trucks returning such as the grilled cheese truck, mini doughnuts, dim sum and Hunky Bill’s Ukrainian food, but an exciting mix of new vendors are coming this year. They include The Crazy Italian, The Praguery and local restaurant Mario’s Kitchen, which will be bringing its ice cream truck. “We strive each year to
offer a variety of cuisines and pack as many trucks in as possible to give attendees their food of choice,” says Fellingham. “(The Praguery) features fresh-baked, sweet and savoury chimney cakes inspired by the popular Czech dessert trdelnik, and Prague’s Cones filled with soft-serve ice cream and coated with premium toppings,” its website explains. There will also be a pancake breakfast on Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Memorial Park gazebo thanks to the North Delta Lions Club. The “Happy Pioneer Watering Hole” beer garden, put on by the Ladner Legion, goes from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the pickleball court.

The parade starts at noon on Sunday. The procession, which includes a range of community groups, winds its way through Ladner Village and ends up at the fairgrounds at Memorial Park.
The parade starts on Delta Street just past Trenant Street, works its way onto 48th Avenue before heading south of Elliott Street and Arthur Drive before making a right onto 47th Avenue towards the park.

Nanaimo roars back from big opening period deficit for first win of the season MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was all-Delta Islanders in the opening and closing minutes of their Sunday afternoon tilt with the Nanaimo Timbermen. It’s what happened in between that resulted in a stinging defeat. The Islanders concluded a tough week with a 13-12 loss to the visiting Timbermen that leaves them with a 1-3-0-1 record in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. An impressive seasonopening win over Port Coquitlam has been followed by home floor losses to Burnaby and Nanaimo, teams they simply need to take care of to challenge for a playoff spot. Nanaimo came into Ladner with a 0-6-0-0 record and dropped a 20-13 decision to PoCo 24 hours earlier. The winless streak looked certain to continue when the hosts jumped out to a 5-1 lead with the game not even eight minutes old. That’s when the T-men called a timeout and regrouped to close out the opening frame with four unanswered goals. They added three more to start the second before Delta finally ended a near 20-minute goalless drought. It was then catchup lacrosse the rest of the way and Nanaimo hung on for the win despite surrendering three straight goals to close out the game.
Special teams played a big part in the outcome with the teams combining for 16 power play or shorthanded goals. The result overshadowed a big outing for veteran Riley Phillips who produced nine points, including four goals. Rookie Sekawnee Baker also scored four times, while Ryan Jones, had two goals and three assists. A tough three games in six days stretch began with an encouraging 12-10 overtime loss to the New West Salmonbellies at Queen’s Park Arena. Rookie standout Haiden Dickson salvaged a point by netting the equalizer with just four seconds remaining. New West earned the victory thanks to a pair of goals in the 10-minute extra session including former Islander Tre LeClaire netting his second of the night. Jake Canlton added a hat trick for the visitors while goaltender Brody Harris was terrific in a relief role. Two nights later, the Islanders dropped a 14-8 road decision to the Langley Thunder behind the season debut of Calgary Roughnecks rookie Ryan Martel who finished with seven points. Dickson had a hat trick for Delta and Dawson Trimble chipped in with three assists. Defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs visit the Ladner Leisure Centre tonight at 8 p.m.

Podium finishes for track athletes at Fraser Valleys It was impressive showing for the South Delta Sun Devils at last week’s Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in Abbotsford, led by Madelyn and Jacob Bonikowsky. The Grade 9 twins have picked up where they left off a year ago, except this time thriving at the junior level. Madelyn captured the girls’ 800 and 1500 metre events with a couple of outstanding performances. Her 800 metre winning time of 2:22.31 was over five seconds better than her victory two weeks earlier at the district meet. She also bettered her time in the 1500m, reaching the finish line in 4:51.96. She will be one of the top seeds at the B.C. Secondary School Championships next week in Langley. Jacob was second in the boys’ 1500m with a time of 4:22.37. He added a third place in the 800m (4:22.37). He also showed his versatility with a ninth place result in the javelin (33.54m). Other standout results included a second place finish for Olivia
Outstanding performances were turned in by SDSS athletes (left to right) Jackson MacCubbin, Jacob Bonikowsky and Madelyn Bonikowsky at last week’s Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in Abbotsford. Cotter in the junior girls high jump thanks to a successful attempt at 1.60 metres. Grade 8 Jackson MacCubbin showed he is going to be a force to be a reckon with on the track, finishing second in the 800m (2:19.68) and third in the 1500m (4:45.12). Isla Stewart also reached the podium in the Grade 8 girls high
jump with a leap of 1.50m. The SDSS 4x100 junior boys relay team finished second with a clocking of 45.96 seconds. The foursome was led by Julio RuddleWebb who was fifth (23.82) and sixth (11.91) in the 200 and 100 metre events. Teammate Jonathan Toews was seventh in the 100m (11.97). Riley Gooksetter was fifth in the
senior boys shot put with a throw of 10.26m. Fynn Burke produced a pair of seventh place finishes in the senior boys javelin (38.84m) and high jump (1.65m). Alex Lamyin was seventh in the junior boys 400m (56.00). Will Raderecht narrowly missed out in advancing to the senior boys 100 metre hurdles, recording the ninth fastest time (17.67 seconds). SDSS finished sixth in the junior team standings — a remarkable result given the team doesn’t have a proper running track. It was also an outstanding meet for Southpointe Academy standout Kaylie Borntraeger. She was second in the junior girls’ 300 metre hurdles (49.25 seconds) and the triple jump (10.45 metres). She also added a fifth place finish in the long jump (4.77m). Delta Secondary was led by Samantha Cates’ 10th place finish in the junior girls long jump (4.27m), while Takuto Hatase was 11th in the junior boys high jump (1.60m). Nicole Zipursky was 13th (5:41.16) in the senior girls 1500m.

Delta Gymnastics will be wellrepresented at the 2018 Canadian Championships in Waterloo Ontario, starting on Thursday. The four-day event brings together over 300 of the best national level and high-performance junior and senior gymnasts who will challenge for the title of national champion in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. Athletes also have the opportunity to represent their province. Team B.C. qualifying was done through a series of trials held earlier this year. “This is the most important gymnastics event in Canada,” says Mike Hood, Delta Gymnastics Men’s Competitive Program Coordinator. “All the best athletes from across Canada will be there and this event is significant in terms of facilitating the athlete’s possible selection to the national team and further to international teams.” This year’s contingent of Delta athletes includes Ryan Woodhead (17), James (Xuan) Luo (27) and Cole Schallig (17). “James is hoping to repeat his last

GAFFEY, Gary Gary left us very suddenly after a brief illness on May 17th at the age of 71. He was our gentle Bear and was the most loving partner; always a “Yes, Dear” to any request. He is survived by his wife, Sheryl; son Ron; daughter Sara; step-daughters Stephanie (Jens Lundgreen-Nielsen); Melinda (Neal Skura) and Jennifer Tilbury; he adored his grandbabies Dylan, Perseverance, Lana, Riley, Lauren and Declynn and his “special girl” Jocelyn St. Denis. He is survived by his brothers Joe (Marianne); John (Joanne); Chris and sister Kathy (John) and numerous nieces and nephews in Ontario. Gary was a kind and gentle soul who only saw the good in everyone, when you think of him, smile and be kind. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at All Saints Anglican church in Ladner (corner of Ladner Trunk Rd. and Arthur Dr.) on Saturday May 26 at 11:00 am with the Venerable Elizabeth Northcott presiding; a light lunch will follow in the church hall. Gary loved watching the eagles soar and birds feeding, if you are so inclined, please consider OWL (owlrehab.org) for a donation in his memory. His spirit is now soaring with the eagles. Love you always GarBear.
