A newborn female harbour seal pup was rescued from Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay Monday.

Several local residents who spotted the stranded seal pup called the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, which arrived on scene about an hour later and took the seal into their care.

There’s much more that needs to be done to not only improve aboriginal student outcomes, but also eliminate racism in Delta.

That was the message delivered to Delta school trustees last week during an update on initiatives underway to further improve indigenous education the district.

Ted Johnson, the district’s director of learning services, and Diane Jubinville, vice-principal of indigenous education, provided the overview.

“This has been, since my new role in this position, an incredible learning journey for me and it continues to be. It’s hard to articulate the path that we’re going through in this because it’s a difficult one,” said Johnson.

“When we’re looking at student success, we want our kids to do well, but we want everyone to be aware of what’s gone on the past three, four hundred years.

Our own government, there was a very conscious, deliberate attempt at eradicating First Nations people. The damage that it has done and continues to do, a mess has been created for all of us.”

Johnson added the ideal would be to eventually not have a need for a separate indigenous education department, and that there would be no disparity in learning achievements

Saying this is an exciting time for indigenous education across Canada, Jubinville talked about the collective responsibility of the district for improving student outcomes.

Delta board of education chair Laura Dixon noted the good news is Delta’s aboriginal graduation rate last year reached 80 per cent, well above the

provincial average, and up from 64 per cent in 2012.

Delta’s rate is the highest in the Lower Mainland and second in B.C. Trustee Rhiannon Bennett, a member of the Musqueam First Nation, commended the work, saying she looks forward to the outcomes of new efforts. However, she said much needs to be done in the community as a whole when it comes equity and

equality.

“There is still a lot of racism in our community.

Just the other day, there was a really unfortunate house fire at Tsawwassen First Nation. Seeing the social media chatter was a bit heartbreaking. People were cracking jokes about how there were smoke signals, even though someone’s house was burning.

There wouldn’t have been those kinds of jokes if that

house would have been on fire in any other neighbourhood,” said Bennett.

“There is a lot of work to do in the community.

I’m also hopeful that these children in our schools are getting a better education than their parents did and they’re going home and sharing what they’re learning, so I’m appreciative of the work that’s happening but we still have a lot of work to do.”

The theft of a golden eagle statue in Ladner that made international headlines in 2016 will soon land in B.C. Supreme Court.

Forgotten Treasures International Inc. is suing Lloyd’s Underwriters and other insurance companies for denying a claim after thieves allegedly made off with a golden eagle statue encrusted with hundreds of diamonds worth $930,000.

The company filed a May 25 notice of civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court nam-

ing Lloyd’s, Endeavour Insurance Services Ltd., Hub International Canada West ULC, Hub International Ltd. and broker Mark Loewen as defendants.

Forgotten Treasures claims it operates an international treasure hunt to raise money for cancer research.

“The focus of the treasure hunt is an 18-pound sculpture of an eagle, made of solid gold and encrusted with 763 diamonds weighing 56 karats,” the claim states.

Carrying a $1 million prize, the hunt involves multiple locations in North America and Europe, with

clues hidden online and in books sold by Forgotten Treasures, which donates the profits to cancer research, according to the lawsuit. Participants who find one of 12 certificates in the hunt are awarded a silver eagle sculpture, the company claims.

“To date, five silver eagles, worth approximately $175,000, have been awarded to the winners of the first five city treasure hunts,” the claim states. “The plaintiff intended to sell the gold eagle at the end of the treasure hunt in order to finance the final prize, with the remainder of the proceeds to be donated to

cancer research.”

In May 2016, Forgotten Treasures founder Ron Shore was promoting the hunt at an event in Ladner.

After the event, Shore took the eagle sculptures to his car and was allegedly jumped by thieves.

“Just before he placed the eagles in his vehicle, Mr. Shore was attacked, hit over the head and robbed.

The thieves cut the strap of the backpack in which the eagles were concealed, and ran away with the eagles,” the claim states.

“Mr. Shore has fully cooperated with the police following the theft, giving them detailed descriptions of one of the thieves

and the get-away truck.

However, the theft remains unsolved.”

Delta police public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf confirmed to the Optimist the investigation is ongoing, but couldn’t provide any further information.

Forgotten Treasures’ insurance claim for the eagles was denied in October 2016.

The company is seeking $400,000 for the golden eagle and $53,750 for the silver eagle.

The allegations have not been tested or proven in court.

Civic officials had a broad-scoping meeting on the legalization of recreational pot while in Ottawa last week.

Delta police Chief Neil Dubord, along with Mayor Lois Jackson, acting city manager Ken Kuntz and Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Bryce Williams, were in the nation’s capital to discuss a variety of issues

with federal officials.

One of the key meetings was with Bill Blair, parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice and attorney general, the same day the Senate passed an historic bill (Bill C-45) to legalize recreational marijuana.

Dubord said their discussion centered around four items: home cultivation, edibles, agricultural land and impaired driving.

“Originally when medi-

cal marijuana legislation was put in place, there was restrictive access for medical marijuana. There was a decision by the federal government — and the courts saw it the same way — that people should be allowed to cultivate in their own home,” said Dubord. “It was our belief that once it is legalized for both recreational and medical use there would be no access problems and you could eliminate

the need for home cultivation.”

Dubord said both the B.C. Fire Chiefs Association and the B.C. Police Chiefs Association wrote letters of concern to government, stating they didn’t believe there was a need for home cultivation once marijuana is legalized.

Scamming season isn’t over yet.

Delta police are putting out another public alert as the department is still getting reports of scammers calling residents claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) and threatening arrest if they don’t pay right away.

In a recent incident, the potential victim received a phone call that appeared to be coming from the Delta Police Department.

“The person never did pay and came in to the police department to confirm if it was us or not,”

said DPD in a post on its Facebook page. “However this could have easily went differently. We would like to remind everyone that CRA scammers frequently ‘spoof’ phone numbers to try and look legitimate.”

Some tips to not fall prey to scam artists: • Revenue Canada does not accept payment in gift cards or bitcoin.

• You will not be arrested for not paying taxes.

The police say it’s best just to hang up.

• At no time do police make phone calls requiring funds for the CRA.

Delta is backing down on limiting the scope of filming in a pair of popular Ladner locations.

Delta council approved recommendations in a staff report Monday that includes a number of changes in the way filming is carried out in Ladner Village and the North 40 Park Reserve.

For Ladner Village, those changes include ensuring the municipal parking lot at 48th Avenue and Bridge Street is available for customer use, notifying business owners of upcoming filming and posting “business open” signs when filming is taking place.

At the North 40 Park Reserve, film schedules and contact information will be posted at the park entrance when filming is underway, while applications for filming at the park will be assessed on the merit of each application.

for three-week periods once a shoot had finished.

The recommendations also included not making the municipal parking lot available for film crews.

Staff put forward those earlier recommendations in response to complaints.

The latest staff report

notes a survey of 146 business owners, of which 45 participated, showed 75 per cent support filming, 18 per cent are neutral while seven per cent do not support filming.

The report also noted the survey found many wanted “appropriate gaps”

of approximately one week between filming, but the report notes staff would continue to seek feedback from the community when it comes to scheduling.

As far as the off-leash North 40 dog park in East Ladner, 46 park users took part in a survey which found the majority support filming. Most of the ideas suggested in that survey are part of the recommendations to council, with the exception of limiting the number of film vehicles permitted to enter the park during filming.

Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission came up with its own recommendation, calling for revenues derived from filming in the North 40 to be held in a reserve and allocated to planning, restoration and interpretative efforts at the park. That recommendation was also approved.

The staff report notes film revenue generates approximately $60,000 annually for the city, money that goes into the engineering department’s budget. That money is used to pay the city’s film liaison clerk and associated auxiliary salaries. A little over half of that revenue is attributed to filming at the North 40.

Double murderer gets escorted absences

The man convicted of killing a friend’s mother and grandmother 28 years ago in Tsawwassen has been granted regular escorted absences despite being denied parole last September.

Kim Hill, whose aunt Doris Leatherbarrow and cousin Sharon Huenemann were killed on Oct. 5, 1990, said she received a letter from the Correctional Service of Canada stating that a warden has granted Derik Lord escorted temporary absences in Chilliwack.

Since January, Lord has been taking a pair of eighthour leaves a month to visit his family, Hill said.

The news has infuriated the victims’ families.

“We don’t feel we’re being protected when a convicted double murderer who can’t admit their guilt is walking around,” said Hill, whose father John Kriss is Leatherbarrow’s brother.

“I don’t feel safe and none of the family feels safe with the warden’s decision.”

Lord was denied day parole for the 11th time last September, largely because he continues to profess his innocence.

Muir were hired by Darren Huenemann to kill his mother and grandmother, so he could get a multimillion-dollar inheritance.

The three teens lived in Saanich at the time and at trial the prosecution argued that on the day of the murders, Huenemann and his girlfriend dropped Lord and Muir off at the ferry terminal. The pair then went to Leatherbarrow’s Tsawwassen home and, after being invited in for dinner by the two women, bludgeoned and stabbed them to death.

Following an investigation, all three were arrested, tried and convicted.

Lord and Muir were both sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Huenemann received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Huenemann, who has since changed his name to Gowan, appeared before the parole board at his Quebec prison last August where his first parole request was denied.

After his conviction, Muir, who pleaded not guilty at trial, admitted his role in the murders and has been out on parole for the past 15 years. He was granted day parole in April 2002 and full parole a year

Trustees approve raise to offset tax changes SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta school trustees voted to give themselves a pay hike Tuesday, but only to make up what they’re about to lose.

The increase is aimed at offsetting an income loss trustees will experience beginning next year following a Federal Income Tax Act change which eliminates a long-time tax break given to elected school boards, city councils, commissions and similar bodies. Elected officials had one-third of their remuneration exempt from income tax as a non-accountable expense allowance for the purpose of performing the duties of their office. That exemption is being taken away.

According to the district’s finance department,

the impact of that change will result in an annual income loss to trustees between $1,638 and $1,986.

The board voted to give itself a raise to make up that amount.

Several trustees noted most of them have a regular job and that the loss of the exemption means they would be paying more overall income tax with their combed salaries.

Several said the removal of the tax provision would discourage people from running for public office and contributing their time. They also noted many of the costs associated with being a school trustee aren’t covered.

Noting the increase is for future boards, chairperson Laura Dixon said it’s disappointing Ottawa made the change without consultation.

Intoxicated man arrested at beach

A man from Ontario could be facing a variety of charges after he was found intoxicated on Centennial Beach Saturday night.

Delta police were called to the beach around 9:40 p.m. after reports from concerned residents about two intoxicated people.

Officers responded along with Delta firefighters and paramedics.

DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf said upon arrival officers located the man and a female who were both intoxicated from what police believe to be alcohol and drugs.

“After speaking with the individuals the male was informed that he would be taken into custody for being intoxicated in a public place,” said Leykauf. “The concern was that he would not be able to care for himself.

At that time he began to

utter threats and became aggressive with the officer.

He also spat in the face of one of the officers.”

The man was arrested and will be facing a number of charges that could include uttering threats and assault of a police officer.

Officers are completing their investigation and will be recommending the charges to Crown counsel.

The female was taken to hospital to be assessed and later released.

t’s funny sometimes how an issue that sits dormant for years, even decades, suddenly, often out of nowhere, gets new life.

The Ladner waterfront, redevelopment of Paterson Park, a new library for Tsawwassen, a sports complex at John Oliver Park… there are countless examples of big ticket items that never seem to be able to get beyond the drawing board, but every now and again one of them, mercifully, finds a way off the list. The Delta Museum had been a charter member, having occupied what was supposed to be a temporary location in the old municipal hall building in Ladner Village for almost 50 years, before the stars finally aligned to find it a new home in the civic precinct.

As was the case with the museum, a project needs several factors to line up for it to be successful, most notably a combination of political will at the local level and the opportunity to tap into funding from senior government sources, which appears to be the model being followed at the moment when it comes to the running tracks at Delta’s high schools.

The tracks didn’t suddenly fall into disrepair as it took years of use, weather and neglect to get us to the point we’re at today, yet we limped along with little hope for improvements given school trustees had far bigger issues on their collective plate.

With staff and services routinely cut to balance a string of deficit budgets, the tracks became an afterthought as there was no possible way for the money to stretch that far.

There also wasn’t a huge public outcry. Yes, there was certainly grumbling about the deterioration of the rubberized surface at South Delta Secondary’s track, but it was far from a front burner issue and was seemingly destined to take up permanent residence on Delta’s ever-growing wish list.

Recently, however, a public push has got the attention of local politicians, both school trustees and council members, who just happen to be facing the voters this fall. There are also pots of money at the provincial and federal levels available to help fund infrastructure projects, so when you add it all up you’ve got a recipe for getting something done.

We’re still a long ways away from that happening, but the stars that need to align seem to be doing so.

Patience and focus are only ways to avoid the big crash

e heard the sirens while on a Saturday evening dog walk.

Later that night when I checked my Facebook a friend had posted about a fatal accident at Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A. It was a chilling way to be introduced to the beautiful Olivia Malcolm who lost her life while rummaging through the trunk of a car at the side of the road.

It felt inevitable because I think we can all agree the roads are getting more dangerous. I feel like I am just an accident away every time I get behind the wheel.

Was the driver that hit Malcolm drunk, speeding or reaching for their cell phone? Hopefully we will know soon so her family can get some answers. Meanwhile we brace for the next road fatality.

I learned how to drive on my mother’s standard Honda Civic in my 20s, rather late in life compared to most of my friends.

It took me years to gain confidence. Sorry to call out one sector of bad drivers, but young ladies and men, please slow down. That “N” on your car is there for a reason. You have passed me in my SUV way too many times, going way too fast.

My husband has been commuting to the city daily from Tsawwassen for the past 30 years and he observes drivers getting more aggressive and impatient. He’s started keeping his hand close to the horn ready to use at a moment’s notice. It’s good defensive driving. Let’s stop being polite and wail on that horn when we see bad driving. Maybe next time people will think twice before being reckless.

The list of driving infractions I witness is ridiculously long -speeding, cell phone use, impatience, aggressiveness towards flag people, running red lights, turning left on a red, not yielding to pedestrians, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating and a lack of common courtesy. I have been

outraged repeatedly over rude drivers who will not let you merge into their lane even under the most extreme circumstances.

Driving is a complex task that requires our full attention and 99 per cent of accidents are caused by human errors in perception and comprehension. In no particular order, they include aging and use of medications as we have lots of older drivers in South Delta who require extra patience.

Alcohol and drug use are also factors, and you’ve got to wonder what that will look like once marijuana is legalized.

Fatigue is another issue, and given we live near a port and truck drivers are prone to fatigue, I am always cautious around them. Distraction is a big one as cell phones and GPS units take our focus off the road. Emotional states also contribute to accidents, so leave your anger at the side of the road.

Summer is here, so let’s roll down the windows, turn up the tunes, enjoy the ride and drive safely.

Comprehensive plan, not bridge, is what’s needed Editor: Let us once and for all put an end to the discussion that a new bridge replacing the George Massey Tunnel is needed.

This not to say the lower Fraser basin needs a comprehensive transportation plan, because one is sorely needed.

The proposed bridge will not stop congestion. In fact, a new, larger bridge will compound congestion in Richmond because there is no new crossing being planned from Richmond to Vancouver to cater to the extra traffic

generated by the proposed crossing.

Simplistic solutions like a mega bridge are nothing more than political theatre as MLA Ian Paton well knows.

The BC Liberal Party, which he represents, did little but follow a dated rubber on asphalt solution that only compounds congestion. Building new highways provides much new income for Liberal friends and insiders, yet only gives temporary relief as congestion soon creeps back with a vengeance.

The Liberals have also

destroyed any chance for a “rail” solution for Richmond and South Delta/Surrey with their faux P-3 project, the Canada Line.

The Canada Line is considered a classic white elephant with its huge costs and limited capacity.

What is needed is a comprehensive transportation plan to get the region out of the present mess that previous Liberal and NDP governments have made for the taxpayer, the commuter and commercial drivers.

It’s a concern to see poisonous rodent traps all over, including city property

Editor: As 21-year residents of Tsawwassen, we are extremely concerned to see Bromadiolone rodent poison traps around City of Delta properties as well as strata and rental complexes throughout the area, including our own strata. We also noticed a blueberry farm nearby that has the boxes placed every six rows.

There have been many articles in this paper from

OWL as well as others on the hazards to birds, wildlife, pets and people that this poison affects.

This substance is responsible for horrible suffering and slow deaths of mice and rats, and as per OWL here in Delta, is also causing slow and painful deaths to the raptors (eagles, owls, hawks and other birds) that ingest the now easy prey.

The rodents suffer horribly as Bromadiolone

is an anti-coagulant that causes them to bleed out their eyes, ears, mouths, etc. They can be found on patios trying to get a drink of water from flower pots.

I spoke to a woman in Ladner and she had found three rats drinking on her deck and it was a sickening sight.

Keep all pets and kids away from these traps as it can be ingested through skin, mouth and air.

SK8 Day allows youngsters to experience skateboarding in an inclusive environment

ASD Autism SK8 Day rolled into Tsawwassen Mills on Sunday providing children with autism a chance to experience the freedom and fun of skateboarding in an inclusive and supportive environment.

The SUPA Society partnered with West49 and sponsors Ultimate Distribution and Newline Skate Parks to host the fourth annual event at the West49 indoor skate park at Tsawwassen Mills.

YM Inc., the action sports company that owns West49, had the 7,000-square-foot indoor park built in order to provide a safe, welcoming environment for kids

to learn how to express themselves through skateboarding.

What is unique to ASD SK8 Day is that each child is paired with an autism behaviour interventionist and skateboard coach with a lesson geared towards that child’s specific needs.

Behaviour consultants were on hand to ensure every child’s needs were met and they experienced a successful introduction to the sport.

SUPA Society board member Dione Costanzo said the event was a huge success.

“It went really well. We had about 50 kids total including kids with autism and their siblings,” said Costanzo.

“We ran five heats, so each kid was paired with

the instructor and the interventionist while the siblings were paired up with a skateboard coach.

They all had 45-minute sessions inside the skate park and we also had an outdoor free skate area staffed with instructors.

Once they got the lesson, the kids catch the bug and are on a roll, so we provide the outdoor space to continue to have fun.”

There were also resource groups set up in tents, professional skate-

boarder Kevin Harris did a demo and food and refreshments for everyone.

“From a parents’ perspective, one of the nice things that SUPA puts on with these events is that they include the siblings. The siblings are the unsung heroes of the family,” she said.

“It’s also a rare chance for me to just step back and watch my son experience the fun and freedom of the sport without me having to intervene

because the environment is so supportive to make him successful.”

SUPA Society is a grassroots initiative started by Surrey dad Dennis Nerpio, whose son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, at age four.

Nerpio, who is a surfer, took his son to the beach one day about eight years ago and discovered something magical — not only did his son enjoy the beach, but surfing with his dad took him out of the

context of being an autistic child and provided him a new sense of freedom.

He was inspired by his son and wanted other children with autism to experience the same.

Along with sponsors Rip Curl and Canucks Autism Network, SUPA Society now hosts an annual Surf Camp for Children with autism in Tofino, Autism SK8 Day and earlier this year held the first Autism Snowboard Day on Mount Seymour.

Myrtle’s Famous Hot Dogs will be back for one day only at The Wexford seniors community on Saturday, June 23 to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. Last year the community event fed gourmet dogs to more than 300 people and raised $2,400 towards Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

Dr. Will Gaede to South Delta Family Dental Care Dr Gaede has practiced in BC since receiving his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in southern California.

He and his wife Blossom raised their three children in Kelowna while for 21 years serving the dental needs of thousands of patients at their offices first downtown and then on Springfield Road. In 2009-2010 he was president of the BC Dental Association. As an experienced general practice dentist Will loves helping patients understand, attain and maintain their dental health.

Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall for five years, now works as a recreation assistant and courtesy shuttle driver at The Wexford.

The event honours his Grandma Myrtle, his inspiration and food cart namesake, who passed away at 77 of Alzheimer’s disease.

This year the event is bigger and better featuring live 1950s-style music

by Twice Shy as well as classic cars and vintage games like hula hooping

and bubble gum blowing contests for kids.

The hot dog menu features Myrtle’s classic New York dog served with sauerkraut, mustard and fried onions, and the Chicago Dog, a delicious mix of super green relish, mustard, dill pickle spear, sweet onions, sports peppers and celery salt on a poppy seed bun.

Chef Bernard Tolen at The Wexford is also adding his custom creations,

the Bacon Mac n Cheese Dog, and the West Coast Po’ Boy made with popcorn shrimp, caramelized onions, chipotle mayo and dried seaweed.

A minimum $5 donation buys a delicious dog and invests in Alzheimer’s and dementia research and support in B.C. The fundraiser runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Seven get Auxiliary bursaries

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society presented $10,000 in bursaries to students and staff last week.

Manraj Bains, Stephanie Cooper, Blake Knoll, Mahnuma Neaha, Harjot Uppal, Cassidy Swenson and Della Gallagher were this year’s recipients.

This marks the 22nd year the society has award-

ed bursaries to students residing in Delta who are continuing or pursuing studies in the healthcare field. Hospital staff members receive bursaries for upgrading their skills.

Since its inception in 1969, the Delta Hospital Auxiliary has grown to approximately 500 volunteers who contributed almost 100,000 hours of

volunteer service in 2017.

The society has contributed over $20 million to Delta Hospital, funding many progressive changes and the purchase of leading-edge medical equipment and services.

This year the society reached its target of contributing $2.4 million for the diagnostics building now under construction.

I Love Ladner

Volunteers behind vibrant community Popular events held annually in Ladner wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of so many What would Ladner look like without volunteers? It would probably be pretty boring, have no sense of community or belonging and would not be a very fun place to live.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of communities and Ladner is no different.

The Ladner Business Association (LBA) presents a number of events and activities throughout the year for the community to enjoy.

The events are primarily free, made possible by the hard work and dedication of volunteers.

“I am continually amazed and in awe of the tireless energy of our community’s volunteers at our various events throughout the year,” says LBA president Jill McKnight. “Thank you to the volunteers to make our community a home.”

event the past five and is now an employee of Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust assisting with the popular Day at the Farm event in September.

She says she volunteers out of a love for the community.

“If I don’t participate and give back when I can, we won’t have the amazing events and the feeling that is Ladner,” says Miller.

“All the events help give us a sense of community.

I think I have volunteered for pretty much all of the events over the years.

Whether it is putting up road barriers, handing out cookies at the tree lighting – if you love your community, you need to be involved with it.”

Miller is convinced that without volunteers, the LBA would never be able to host its many events.

“With our Day at the Farm event we basically rely on 60 to 70 volunteers to make that event happen and that is not an unusual number for such

Connie Lucas is now five years retired as the owner of Ladner and Delta Travel.

She began volunteering almost 15 years ago for the LBA’s popular Quilt Walk and Classic Car Show.

Since then she has also volunteered at the Easter parade and Breakfast with Santa.

She says helping out just makes her feel good.

“I love meeting people, giving back to the community and helping the community. I just enjoy it,” she says.

Carol Miles, owner of South Delta Heels, is a tremendous LBA volunteer. She has sat on the LBA executive, helped

with the Easter parade, Tree Festival and Breakfast with Santa and has also volunteered with the Delta Hospital Foundation gala for several years.

Miles says when she and her husband moved to Ladner 15 years ago she never really felt like she had been part of a community anywhere else.

“But after living in Ladner for 15 years, you feel you have an investment in this little town.

Let’s say I volunteer for the tree lighting with the LBA, nobody in the future is going to necessarily remember me having volunteered, but the kids who came will remember the event and it makes me feel really good to know that I’m a part of something.

No one volunteers to get his or her name in the paper or to get recognition. Volunteering is an investment in the people that live here.”

Miles says she and others volunteer because they truly love where they live.

Market brings thousands to 48th Avenue

22nd season now underway

A beloved summer tradition in Ladner returned earlier this month.

The Ladner Village Market kicked off its 22nd season by bringing together “make it, bake it or grow it” vendors, community organizations and 48th Avenue merchants in a festival-like event.

The market strives to offer locals and visitors access to farm fresh produce and meats, artisan foods and unique, handcrafted products in a festive atmosphere.

A gathering place for friends and family, the Ladner Village Market has become a destination for people throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Featuring more than 160 artisan vendors each time, the Ladner Village Market is one of Western

Canada’s largest open air markets spread over three blocks on 48th Avenue from Delta Street to Elliott Street.

It is held on the second and fourth Sundays in June, July and August and the second Sunday of September.

Market dates for 2018 are: June 24, July 8 and 22, Aug. 12 and 26, and Sept.

9. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

With its “make it, bake it or grow it” philosophy, the market allows shoppers to meet the individuals who create the products and, in many instances, sample their creations.

Shoppers will be entertained by live performances and talented buskers, while local merchants and restaurants will be open to welcome visitors to Ladner Village.

According to Delta, careful and respectful rehabilitation combined with necessary upgrades have enhanced the her-

itage significance and extended the useful life of the building. An elevator has been added and public washrooms are now available.

Parks, recreation and culture director Ken Kuntz said besides the Ladner CoPS on the second level, the building will be utilized as a storage space for

the DPD Pipe Band and storage in the lower level for the DPD bike patrol.

He said the third level will be for a municipal service, but what that service will be has not been decided yet.

The restoration project included more than $500,000 from the federal government’s Canada 150

Community Infrastructure Fund.

Delta police Chief Neil Dubord said the public opening of the new CoPS office in February felt a little like Christmas Day. “To say that this community police office in historic Delta is impressive is really an understatement,” said Dubord.

The Ladner Community Police Station (CoPS) is quickly becoming a hub to address community concerns and get information.

In February, Delta’s historic municipal hall in Ladner Village was re-opened to the public following an extensive $2.5-million rehabilitation that started in 2016.

The space is now the new home of Ladner CoPS, which is fitting as the century-old building at the corner of Delta and Bridge streets was once Delta’s police station. For almost the last 50 years it had served as the home of the Delta Museum and Archives.

Const. Ken Kirk said the community response has been very positive.

“People have been impressed with the renovations,” Kirk said. “The walk-ins are noticeably up, so for sure our community contact has increased.”

The community station had been on 48th Avenue and while the space was well utilized, getting situated in a more prominent location within the village has been welcomed.

Kirk said even though it has only been three months, with the increase in public interactions comes with an upturn in addressing community concerns.

“That is what we are here for though — to interact and engage with the public,” he said. “Some of the concerns and inquiries the volunteers can handle, but some people do want to speak with a police officer, so that’s my role.

The Ladner Business Association (LBA) prides itself on giving back to the community.

Its merchants and volunteers do this by way of many events and activities that bring families together, bring the community together and help contribute to why we all love Ladner.

A successful Easter egg hunt and parade were held in April, while the Ladner Village Market kicked off its 22nd season earlier this month.

If you missed the first market of 2018, don’t worry as there will be six more dates throughout the summer. Featuring over 160 artisan vendors, the market is held on the second and fourth Sundays in June, July and August and the second Sunday of September. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One of Ladner’s biggest events is the 14th annual Quilt Walk and Classic Car Show, which is set for Sunday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Two other popular events will take place later in the year.

The first is the official kick-off to the Christmas season with the LBA’s Tree Lighting event on Thursday, Nov. 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

This family-oriented event includes music performances, cookie decorating, children’s activities, gingerbread house contest

and free hot chocolate.

The night culminates with the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the Christmas tree.

The LBA also hosts its annual Breakfast with Santa, set for Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Ladner Community Centre.

Community VIPs will serve up a tasty pancake breakfast. There will also be face painting for the kids, entertainment and photos with Santa.

The village is also home to other events not hosted by the LBA, but feature many of the merchants who volunteer their time.

The Tour de Delta’s

Ladner Criterium is one of those events and will be held on Saturday, July 7.

“If you haven’t been to a bike race before, you will be amazed at how quickly these riders move through the course in the village,” says McKnight. “Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a free evening of entertainment perfect for the entire family.”

The best place to watch the race is the start/finish area at Delta and Bridge streets, “crash corner” at Chisholm and Delta streets, 48th Avenue from Delta to Elliott streets, or any of the eateries along the race course.

Hollywood North continues to love Delta, with a special fondness for Ladner Village.

According to the City of Delta, 12 commercials, 75 TV series and 15 feature films, which resulted in 342 days of filming, took place throughout Delta last year. In Ladner Village, eight productions filmed in 2017 for a total of 27 days.

Hallmark showed a particular affection for the village as four Christmas movies were filmed here in 2017, including Christmas of Joy and Finding Santa that shot for a total of 14 days last October.

Ladner Business Association president Jill McKnight said in general merchants embrace the filming experience.

“We appreciate the number of community members the film industry employs and the families it supports,” said McKnight.

According to Creative BC, the film industry’s financial impact in Delta is quite significant. In 2016, 1,330 B.C. film industry employees were Delta residents, earning a total of almost $31 million. There were 354 employees in Ladner, earning a total of $8.6 million in wages.

Community comes together to rescue duck family in peril

Teamwork, cooperation and just being a good neighbour are all traits that make Ladner special.

Recently those attributes were on full display when businesses in Ladner Village and the Delta police cooperated to save a family of ducks in peril.

A call came into police as “Mallard family in

peril.” An employee from Lawlor Goldsmith reported that a mallard and her brood of ducklings were wandering through traffic in Ladner Village.

“Our police cars don’t come equipped with fishing nets, so Const. Ken Kirk from the Ladner CoPS office contacted Jens Cuthbert from Stillwater Sports, who helped him

wrangle the ducks,” says DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf.

“Mom and babies were captured safely and released near Ladner Harbour. This is just another example of no call too small in action.”

Leykauf says rescuing ducklings in peril seems to be an annual event for DPD. “Officers are happy

Yes, folks, it’s coming — in just a matter of hours.

The arrival of the best season of the year — in my opinion, anyway — is on the clock. And I am ready and waiting.

Well, for the most part.

Heck, the summer solstice is a biggie. It’s the longest day of the year. It’s the official kickoff to beach time. It’s the start to patio season and picnic time and summer holidays.

Hey, I thought. If anything says party time, it’s all the above.

“We need to celebrate the solstice,” I told the hus-

band days ago.

“Plan it,” he said, “and I’ll be there.”

I researched the possibilities.

In some parts, I learned, bonfires are huge. So is traditional music. So are costumes and masks and unusual food. And so is, um, a skinny dip or a naked sprint.

We’d give the latter a pass.

The bonfire idea was interesting, but not terribly practical, given that we have more than a few trees on the property.

The traditional music thing was intriguing, but I wasn’t sure what constituted traditional.

Having ruled out the meditation and the wreaths, I turned my attention to the costumes and the unusual food.

“What’s an appropriate costume for summer solstice?” I asked the husband. “Surely not Peter Pan or Spider Woman?”

“Of course not,” he said.

“But a druid might work.”

I agreed, even though I hadn’t the foggiest idea what a druid costume looked like.

That left the unusual food.

“OK,” I said. “This is coming together nicely.

But we still need to eat something unusual tomorrow. What does that look like?”

The husband pondered.

“Hmm,” he said. “How about pasta topped with potato salad? That’s unusual.”

“Sure is,” I said. “So is chicken noodle Bran Flakes soup.”

“Super unusual,” he agreed. “Also super disgusting.”

So there we had it: A plan.

Come summer solstice we’ll be having a small celebration.

We’ll dress like druids, sing Kumbaya and eat potato salad linguine.

Granted, this might seem the slightest bit odd.

But hey, this is just once a year.

I was told that I required soft tissue management because of irritated and damaged gum tissues. What is this?

Every profession has its own terms they use and ours is no exception. This month I will list and explain as many of the terms used for banknotes as I can. Next month I will do the same for coins.

A solid number is a note where all the numbers are the same, such as 11111, 22222 etc. Most solids in new condition also sell for $1,000.00 and up. However for Canadian notes with 7 digits in the serial number if only 6 are the same with 1 different they only retail for $20.00 approximately.

RADARs are notes where the serial number reads the same forwards as backwards, such as 1234321 or 1125211. A solid is also a form of RADAR. RADARs with only 2 different numbers in the serial number are worth more than ones that have 3 or 4. Canadian notes can only have up to 4 different numbers in them but American can have 5 different.

Replacement notes occur when a bill is damaged during printing. Banknotes are printed in sheets 500 deep (used to be sheets of 40, now 32) and with their numbers jumping 500 as you go across the sheet.To keep the counts in stacks consistent with the printings, a replacement note is inserted for every damaged banknote.

From the 1950s up to the 1970s these replacement notes were identified by an asterisk (*) in front of the serial number prefix. In the late 1970s and 1980s an X as the third letter in the serial number prefix (ex. ABX or EBX) identified a replacement. These are all very collectable and prices are determined not only by the condition but by the prefix letters of the bill. Some prefixes are much scarcer than others.

Last are Test notes. These are issued to test different papers and how they wear during circulation.

For the 1954 notes, only $2 notes had test versions and their prefix are E/R, G/R and S/R. These test notes range from $35 to$10,000 dollars. For the 1972 $5 the test note prefix is RS. Note that only a specific range in these prefix’s are actual test notes. For the 1973 $1 bill all prefix’s AXA and EXA are test notes.

Q: Why does it take 2 appointments when I have a crown done and have to suffer with a temporary crown for 2 weeks?

A: The traditional way for doing a crown was 2 visits.The first visit involved the preparation of the tooth, an impression of the tooth, and a temporary crown.The second visit was the placement of the new crown that was made by a lab.With the advances in dentistry we have the technology to do the crown preparation Dr. Raj Dhiman and placement of the new crown in the same visit. Using a technology called 604-946-9588 CEREC (which is CAD/CAM) we can prepare the tooth and digitally scan the tooth as opposed to taking an impression.Then we can design the crown digitally on a computer using specialized software and mill it out from a block of ceramic.This way you don’t need a temporary and you don’t have to take time off work for a second visit. Community Delta’s Got Talent seeks contestants

Organizers have put the call out for submissions for this year’s Delta’s Got Talent at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival.

Delta youth (between 13 and 19) looking to show off their vocal, instrumental, dance or other talent can send in their auditions via YouTube link to deltasgottalent@gmail. com, according to the Sun Festival website.

USB sticks can also be dropped off at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

Video is preferred but audio-only will also be accepted. Auditions should be less than three minutes.

Submissions need to be made by June 30.

Finalists will perform on the Tsawwassen Sun Festival main stage on Monday, Aug. 6. Two of the finalists will be selected for grand prizes, one in the 13 to 15 age group and the other in the 16 to 19 age group.

Nearly 20 teams will be raising money and awareness for cystic fibrosis at a lawn bowling event in Tsawwassen next month.

Lawn Summer Nights will be held on Friday, July 20 at the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club, says organizer Kristen Thomas.

“My husband and I attended Lawn Summer Nights events in Vancouver the past three years and wanted to bring this fun event to our community,” says Thomas.

Their son Mason, 3, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis through newborn screening.

All of the spots to lawn bowl are sold out but social tickets to watch the event from the sidelines ($35, which includes dinner and a drink) are still available online. Social tickets might be available at the door.

Junior “A” Islanders double their season win total after upsetting Victoria MARK BOOTH

The Delta Islanders head into Coquitlam Wednesday night with something they have had little of all season.

Momentum.

The Islanders will be riding a two-game win streak when they take on the perennial B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League powerhouse thanks to a weekend sweep of the Nanaimo Timbermen and Victoria Shamrocks. They leaned on the outstanding goaltending of Matt Hills who made 42 stops in a 9-6 win in Nanaimo and he was even better 24 hours later at the Ladner Leisure Centre with 59 saves in an 11-9 upset of the second place Shamrocks.

At 4-10-0, Delta won’t be in next month’s BCJALL playoffs but it’s crucial this franchise takes a step forward with plenty of young and promising talent that will be around for the next few years.

Following an impressive seasonopening win over Port Coquitlam, the Islanders dropped nine consecutive games and many were of the ugly variety.

It forced first-year co-head coach Andy Ogilvie to revamp his entire defensive system. The new structure, combined with Hills’ brilliance, has the Islanders climbing back towards respectability with seven regular season games remaining.

“It was just a matter of our start of the season game plan not fitting with this group of players,” said Ogilvie. “The defence that we were playing is what I used last year (as an assistant in the WLA). We altered it and those adjustments are paying off now. The kids have bought in and are working hard. It also helps getting that kind of goaltending.”

“He gets out there on the ball but also shows good movement.

He did a great job of cutting down the angles (on perimeter shots) and also made some great stops when they did work the ball to get some good looks. Those saves kept us in a game we should have been losing.”

The Shamrocks were playing catch-up all night after goals from Mark Yingling, Dawson Trimble, Riley Phillips and Jake Cantlon gave the hosts a 4-0 lead 12 minutes in.

Delta opened up a 9-4 advantage in the early stages of the third when the Shamrocks cranked their game to another level to produce three unanswered goals with still eight minutes remaining. That’s when Hills came up with some superb stops to halt the comeback, while goals from Ryan Jones and Brendan Szabo gave the hosts some much needed breathing room to complete the upset.

Jones, Phillips and Yingling each scored twice. Jake Cantlon and Jake McIntosh had the other goals.

Phillips added seven assists to finish with nine points.

In Nanaimo, Trimble had a big

night with six points, including a pair of goals. Jones added a hat trick.

After taking on the Adanacs Wednesday, Delta travels to Port Coquitlam on Friday and hosts Langley on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Boxla Bits…

The looming July 1st trading deadline heated up this past week with the last place Burnaby Lakers making deals with contenders New West and Port Coquitlam.

What the Islanders will do remains to be seen but it should be about adding on to a strong 2000-born age group with hopes of contending for the league championship by 2020.

What makes lacrosse trades so flexible and unpredictable is players with eligibility remaining often end up back with the noncontending team that dealt them.

That was the case last season when the Islanders sent Jones back east to Six Nations.

“There is a lot of activity and interested parties around the league,” added Disher. “There is going to be some activity but we would just like to see how the players are playing and what we can do best for our team moving forward.

We are only going to make a deal that is going to work best for our interest. We won’t do anything otherwise.”

The Ladner Red Sox capped an outstanding season in thrilling fashion, edging the White Rock Tritons 8-7 to win B.C. Baseball’s 13U Pee Wee AA Interlock League playoff championship.

The Red Sox rolled through their spring schedule with a 15-1 record. Their opponent in the playoff final happened to be the only team to hand them a defeat.

Enjoying home diamond advantage at Cromie Park, Ladner saw its early 3-2 lead evaporate when the Tritons Silver scored four runs in the in the fourth inning. The hosts responded with three of their own and it was deadlocked at 6-6 after five innings.

White Rock made it 7-6 in its half of the sixth and clung to the advantage heading into the Red Sox’s final at bats in the bottom of the seventh.

That’s when the locals thrilled their supporters as Quincy Chong tied the game with a home run and Jaren Yamaoka followed with a double off the centre field fence. Brady McDonald then drove him home to cap the comeback in walk-off fashion.

Congrats to the Red Sox on their amazing season. The team also includes: Angelo Malenica, Ben Lakeland, Casey Cartlidge, Josh Robie, Kenny Scott, Macin MacDonald, Mason Roberts, Nathan Kirkbride and Nicholas L’Heureux.

The coaches are Steve Chong, Randi Yamaoka, Colin Robie, Sean MacDonald.

New karate belts achieved

The Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club is well into its 37th season with junior and senior members continuing to advance to their next belts.Over the past 10 months the following members have reached new heights: Weston S. (9th Kyu-yellow belt), Greg M. (10th Kyu-white and yellow stripe), Parker T. (4th Kyu-purple belt), Tabitha B. (5th Kyu-blue belt), Emmett R. (6th Kyu-green belt), Sami O. (6th Kyu-green belt), Fannie S. (5th Kyu-blue belt), Michael H. (2nd Kyu-brown belt), Rian D. (2nd Kyu-brown belt) and Jag. M (1st Dan-black belt).

All these achievements were recognized at the international level by the

Japan Karate Association (JKA).

Senseis Graham Mallett, Ashraf Omeria and Marco Lovera work as volunteers providing instruction while instilling strong core values of Traditional Shotokan Karate. The staff also includes Don Sharp — a sixth degree black belt instructor based out of Chilliwack and head of JKA-BC. Many parents have indicated that their child’s focus, etiquette and confidence has improved with Karate along with their physical abilities in other sports.

The Athletics overcame a tough schedule to be crowned Ladner Minor Baseball’s Mosquito Division playoff champions.

The post-season format featured the six-team division split into two pool groups. The A’s looked to be in tough with the Mariners and Orioles — finalists at the recent Tom Henderson Memorial Tournament.

The A’s outlasted the Mariners 14-8, setting the stage for their next encounter against the Orioles with a semi-final berth on the line.

A terrific start resulted in a 6-1 lead before the Orioles came storming back to jump ahead 10-6.

That’s when the Athletics’ bats exploded for 18 runs in the top of the six, on their way to victory and a semifinal berth against the Cardinals — first place finishers in the other pool group.

A barn-burner saw the A’s hold off their friendly rival 11-8 — led by ace pitcher Owen “Otter” Macool who worked a pair of scoreless innings to seal the victory.

The championship game matched the A’s against the Yankees who featured

some of the league’s biggest hitters with Macool unavailable on the mound.

The A’s took a 4-3 lead into the top of the third when they produced three straight doubles from Macool, Vaun Sochting and Graham Jackson to extend the margin to 8-3. The team then received outstanding pitching over the next three innings from Noah Murray with big defensive support behind him outfielder Tahano Northey.

With the game on the line in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Smith came up with a spectacular grab at second base and flipped the ball to first for the last out of the game to seal the victory and championship with a 15-7 win.

The A’s roster also includes: Kaleb Simeon, Austin Orellana Murica, Daniel Liu, Cristian Soucek and Sean Jones. The team was coached by Jason Northey, Dave Sochting, Jordy Cunningham and Mike Jones.

Up next for the A’s is the Delta Cup were they will face the league winners from North Delta and Tsawwassen on June 24 at Dennison Park in Tsawwassen.

MADDISON, Margaret It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved mother and grandmother Margaret, on June 13th, 2018. She will be greatly missed by her children: Dorothy (Pierre), David (Yvonne), Louise (John) and her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was sadly predeceased by her loving husband Frank Maddison.

Margaret was an accomplished pianist, sharing her love of music by playing often for church services, residents at care homes, as well as family gatherings.

She was also a talented knitter and presented many beautiful sweaters, toques and blankets as gifts. She loved knitting for those in need. She had a passion for baking, cooking and taking care of her family.

Jerome was born in Port Essington, Skeena River and raised at Canoe Pass, BC. He was a life long fisherman, boat builder, construction worker and dog lover. He was well known in 1970’s in the lacrosse community, and was an avid athlete as a young man.
