Clearing work on a piece of Tsawwassen farmland in order to build a greenhouse was stopped by the City of Delta last week due to a lack of permits. The property is currently listed for sale for $23.8 million and is being marketed as an investment opportunity.
Work quickly shut down City puts a stop to clearing of contentious piece of Tsawwassen farmland

The fate of a piece of agricultural land in Tsawwassen has been uncertain for years, but now things appear to be coming to a head and residents are sounding the alarm. Site clearing work began last week on the 18-hectare (45-acre) parcel in the 5700-block of 6th Avenue, but a stop work order
was soon imposed by Delta after residents complained to city hall. Now owned by a numbered company, the land, which had formerly been referred to as the Guichon property and the subject of a rezoning proposal decades ago, is immediately east of the Forest by the Bay subdivision adjacent to the Southlands and Beach Grove Golf Club. Bylaw manager Hugh Davies
confirmed there hadn’t been any development or soil deposit applications submitted to city hall, but the owner had begun site preparation work, confirming to a bylaw officer that the plan was to construct a greenhouse. “They were depositing soil there, gravel material on site. There was no soil deposit permit or development permit for the material that was being put on
there,” Davies told the Optimist. “It’s zoned A1 agricultural, so you can’t bring material on site like that without a soil deposit, or at least a development permit. “The owners have been advised what they need to do and the stop work order is in place. No further trucks are to go on there or any work on that property until that’s been resolved,” Davies said. AGRICULTURAL: see Page 3

Local drowns in Alice Lake Dive team recovers body of a 20-year-old Delta man from lake near Squamish IAN JACQUES

The body of a 20-yearold man from Delta was recovered from the waters of Alice Lake near Squamish last Thursday afternoon after he drowned in a tragic accident Wednesday night. “Four members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) arrived at Alice Lake this morning [Thursday] and shortly after 1 p.m., the team located the body of the man,” said Cpl. Sascha Banks. “Squamish RCMP and its partners are wanting to extend their thoughts out to the family and friends of the man.” According to RCMP, the man, whose name will not be released by police, was camping with friends at the provincial park when he drowned around 8 p.m. Wednesday. “He went into distress close to the shoreline on the southwest side of the lake. His friends and bystanders immediately

Members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team found the body of a 20-yearold man from Delta last Thursday afternoon. The man drowned in Alice Lake in Squamish last Wednesday night. searched the area for him and called for help,” said Banks. In addition to RCMP, members from Squamish Search and Rescue, Squamish Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance Service, BC Parks as well as bystanders
searched the water for the man for several hours to no avail. The BC Coroners Service is urging everyone to take extra care when they are near rivers, lakes or the ocean. Statistics collected by
the BC Coroners Service consistently show a spike in drowning deaths each summer, with the numbers beginning to increase in May and continuing to rise through August. While preliminary data from 2016 shows a decline
in the number of accidental drownings, the BC Coroners Service already is now investigating five drowning incidents that occurred this month in B.C. waterways. Data from 2016 shows a total of 47 accidental drownings, the lowest number in the past decade, down from 80 in 2015. The BC Coroners Service emphasizes the need for everyone to understand the dangers that might lurk in or near B.C.’s lakes and rivers. These include sudden drop-offs into deep water, unexpectedly cold water temperatures, unexpected underwater obstacles, and unstable or slippery rock edges above cliffs and waterfalls. Waters in B.C. are frequently much colder than in other countries or provinces. If you are hosting someone from out of town, be sure to warn them of these potential hazards. — With files from Squamish Chief
Agricultural property listed for sale for $23.8 million
CONTINUED from Page 1 Adding to the uncertainty is the fact the property is listed for sale for $23.8 million. Although it is zoned by the city as agricultural, it’s not in the Agricultural Land Reserve, something that’s been highlighted as a “builder and investor alert” in the listing by Royal Pacific Realty Corp. An ad for the listing states: “Rarely available 45.65 acre parcel for sale
located on Tsawwassen. Zoned A1, potential to rezone to residential area. Property is excluded from ALR, no need Provincial ALC approval. Get in on the rapidly growing Tsawwassen.” Real estate agent Tracy Nui confirmed it’s a longterm investment opportunity. Forest by the Bay homeowner Gary Seabrook said one of his neighbours was
told the plan is to build a greenhouse and parking lot, but Seabrook believes that might just be a threat and the real goal is to build housing. “It looks like it’s to put pressure on council to grow houses,” he said. “It’s another Southlands but there’s things Delta can do, though, like sending it back to Victoria like Southlands, saying they’ll put it back in the ALR.

“But the biggest thing here is that you’re not allowed to disrupt the environment. There’s wetlands down here right along the back of these houses and they’ve covered over some of the ditches, just going in there and doing what they wanted to do with no regard to anything else.” The parcel isn’t the only agricultural property for sale in Delta listed for big
dollars as an investment opportunity. A 44.8-hectare (112-acre) farm on Arthur Drive, for example, is listed for $19.7 million, described by RE/MAX Progroup Realty as having “unbeatable high profile exposure.” Other similar listings can be seen in Richmond, including an “investment opportunity with great potential’ by Royal Pacific Realty.

New DPD bike unit has an immediate impact IAN JACQUES

A new bike unit has already paid dividends for the Delta police. The first day the bike unit was in operation, officers arrested a suspected shoplifter at Tsawwassen Mills. “We stopped her just a she was going to her car,” said Const. Jeff Miller. “She told me, ‘I was going to run, but then I looked at you and thought, forget it.’” Started in mid-June, the bike unit is an addition to the department’s Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) Services Team. TFN lands are flat, with a number of trails, and readily
lend themselves to policing on bike. “It just makes us that much more accessible,” said Sgt. Roy Garnham, who heads up the unit. “Rather than being in cars, behind windows, we’re finding already that people are stopping us more, waving at us, just wanting to have a quick chat.” He points out the bikes are convenient, saying he can get from the TFN administrative offices to the mall in three minutes - sometimes faster than what he might be able to do in the car, dependent on traffic. Both officers took a oneweek course that teaches police officers bike-specif-
ic tactics as well as training on how to do power slides, travel safely down stairs and more. They wear their regular duty belts, as well as a police uniform modified for use on bikes, consisting of shorts and short-sleeved shirt, and, of course, a helmet. The bikes are specially designed for law enforcement use, with heavy-duty 29-inch tires. “They’re not exactly light weight,” Garnham said wryly. DPD has had a bike unit in the past, but it’s been about 15 years since it was active. Garnham thinks the unit is the perfect fit for the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Students create beautiful mosaic to welcome all to Port Guichon IAN JACQUES

A lasting legacy now hangs in the entrance of Port Guichon Elementary thanks to the talents of the school’s Grade 3/4 students and their teacher. The beautiful tiled mosaic was a six-month labour of love, according to teacher Terri Fuller. Fuller completed a similar project with students when she taught at Holly Elementary. She said that project gave her the confidence her current students could take it on. “I think it’s a challenging project for the kids and you have to set the bar high, but they meet it if you give them the time,” said Fuller. “I always encouraged them that I would give them the time if they would take the initiative to do something that they could be proud of.” Materials were sourced through donations at the Richmond Home Depot and the Tile Store. The students came up

Once the students completed the outline of the logo, they would go to the box of tiles and match up the design. Fuller said throughout the project, the students shared a great sense of accomplishment, problem
solving, perseverance and cooperation, all skills they can utilize in life. “And confidence building as well,” she said. “I think the project also demonstrates the diverse range of experiences you can have when you are in school.” Principal Niels Nielsen
said he is in awe of the students’ work. “To think that a group of Grade 3/4 kids could build something like that… you would pay a fortune to have that in your front entrance, but it was done by kids and with free donations, so it is a very cool thing,” Nielsen said.

Chance encounter leads Syrians to Tsawwassen
Church sponsors refugee family fleeing violence
Tsawwassen Alliance Church welcomed its privately sponsored refugee family to South Delta earlier this month. A process that began in late 2015 with a spontaneous meeting in Jordan between church member Holden Bowker and a group of refugees finally came to fruition. In the summer of 2014, the Qasha family was one of many who fled in the face of ISIS attacks in Syria and Iraq. Their home town was only a few miles from Mosul, which was the scene of a major armed conflict that summer. After Mosul fell, they were given 24 hours to flee for their lives, taking with them only the few personal possessions that could be piled in the back of a pickup truck. After a brief stay in a refugee camp in Kurdistan,
they managed to migrate to Jordan where Bowker met them at a church in Madaba. Intrigued by their story and knowing his home church had recently approved a refugee sponsorship program, he approached the church board which unanimously agreed to apply for private sponsorship and bring them to Canada. A committee was formed and the necessary funding was raised in a matter of weeks, quickly followed by the submission of the government application for sponsorship. Although the paperwork seemed to move quickly at first, soon things ground to a halt, which frequently happens with many privately sponsored refugees. After several years of waiting, the application was approved and the
Qasha family was finally given a travel date to Canada. While they waited, family members made a concerted effort to work on their English language skills and learn about their soon to be adopted country. They have arrived to a supportive church family that has found housing for them, completely furnished their suite, and is assisting them with shopping, transportation, banking, language training and employment opportunities. Bowker says Tsawwassen Alliance Church is pleased to introduce the family to the community. “Knowing how much they have suffered and lost, we know South Delta will be a safe and welcoming place for them to live,” he says.

t might not seem like it — or even smell like it — but there appears to be some headway being made to deal with the stench emanating from the composting operation in East Ladner. Why it’s taken this long, and why government has refused to use blunt force, are issues for another day, but what Metro Vancouver has conveyed to the City of Delta has to be considered the most encouraging news yet in a saga that has dragged on far longer, and caused far more frustration in the community, than was necessary. The idea of negotiating an air quality permit with an operation that has been fouling the air for years is bizarre, but given that’s what’s happening, at least it looks like we’re finally getting somewhere. Green For Life Enviro-Smart Organics has been given the option of a permit that authorizes emissions from a fully enclosed facility or one that temporarily authorizes emissions from the existing facility but would not allow it to continue in its current form after a certain date. Assuming that turning waste into compost is a lucrative undertaking, one the company wants to continue, EnviroSmart appears to have no other choice but to enclose its 72nd Street operation if it’s going to do business here in the long term. An enclosed facility that can properly manage odours should finally address the stench that has permeated East Ladner and beyond for years, so the sooner we get to this eventuality, the better. The fact that so many people have had to endure nauseating conditions for such a long time shows there’s clearly a flaw in the way operations of this kind are regulated. If an enclosed facility is the only real way to ensure neighbours don’t suffer, why isn’t that a condition from the outset? Why wait for the inevitable odour problems? Hopefully that’s something that comes out of Metro Vancouver’s ongoing efforts to get a handle on those operations that create odours across the region. The issue is rearing its head frequently enough that the regional district has embarked on a process to devise better ways to regulate potential polluters. It’s come too late for the folks in East Ladner but at the very least the situation here can act as an example of what shouldn’t be allowed to happen going forward.
Grad Walk is a tradition that’s far more than just a parade
I
f there is one thing that makes June really special, it’s the end of the school year, and for many, graduation from high school. It’s an important time for them, heading out into the world on their own terms. No requirement to be in school, but a choice between taking a job or going to college, university or training for a trade. Before they make that transition, there is the celebration of graduating with their classmates. I still remember my grad, at least I get reminded of it every 10 years with a reunion. I think that’s what makes it so important, because it is a big event in your life that will carry on through the rest of your life. We are lucky in Ladner and Tsawwassen in having a single high school in each community. I always thought it was special that all the kids you have known through daycare, pre-school, sports and other activities all come together in Grade 8, an opportunity to rekindle friendships and let them grow. Only in small towns does that happen usually, something we get to share even though we are part of a larger city. There is more to it, though. The school, the graduation, is a criti-

cal centre of our community, of what makes South Delta special, and why we like living here so much. Noting exemplifies this more than the Grad Walk. On a sunny Friday in June, the graduates don their best attire and walk down a red carpet in front of family and friends, sharing one of the true milestones of their life with the rest of the community. There are no invitations, anyone can come and celebrate, and many do. If you have kids, you likely know one or more graduates. Lots of people just want to come out and be part of it. I know of at least one elementary school teacher who is there, at the beginning of the walk, to see her former students. She cheers, she hugs, sometimes
she cries, but one thing is for sure — she cares. We all care. It might not seem like much, it might be challenging to arrange, it might be time consuming, but it definitely means something to all of us. It might seem to be a small thing, but it’s a piece of a puzzle that makes our community what it is. This year it rained in Tsawwassen, and led to a bit of a scramble to have the Grad Walk inside. It wasn’t the same as the pageantry of the walk outside, but was no less important. The parents beamed with just as much pride. The friends screamed just as loud. The audience clapped just as hard. The tears of pride flowed just as much. None of these events happen without hundreds of volunteer hours from parents of grads, and the support of the teachers and administration. It’s a thankless job that deserves our gratitude. Congratulations to the Grad Class of ’18! Bruising is in a new place
Editor: Democracy, it’s been said, is the state of affairs in which we consent to the government misspending our money, and electing the best person to do it. Yes, indeed, so far, so good, we’re batting 1,000. Without solid financial data to make sound decisions on massive infrastructure spending on ventures such as the Kinder Morgan pipeline, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bailout gambit of “nationalizing” the pipeline project seems little more than a Hail Mary
pass to save political face, while telling international investors that Canada is not a safe and secure place for large-scale private investment. It was Milton Friedman who once observed: “There is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program.” As if that isn’t enough, there’s John Kenneth Galbraith adding insult to economic injury when he observed: “You will find that the government is the kind of organization which, though it does big things badly, does small
things badly too.” But Ronald Reagan perhaps said it best: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’” Now that we have been “benefitting” from the Liberal brand of “Real Change” for about halfway through Trudeau’s deficit-ridden “probationary” prime ministership, we have come to realize that “Real Change” merely has come to mean ... to be bruised in a new place. Happy to see more help for caregivers
Editor: It was excellent news last week to hear that the B.C. Ministry of Health is investing $75 million to expand respite care and adult day programs to help seniors and their caregiver loved ones. These enhancements will likely help lighten the stressful load
that many unpaid, selfless family caregivers experience. It is also a good way to support more seniors and those with chronic illnesses to stay longer in their homes, while also contributing to fewer costly hospital stays. It’s encouraging to hear the health minister and
his team are giving more recognition to this very important and essential healthcare service. According to the Family Caregivers of British Columbia, there are over one million people in B.C. providing 80 per cent of the care for a family member or friend. B. Yaworski
Alzheimer’s fundraiser is teamwork at its finest
Editor: Thank you, Myrtle’s Hot Dogs. What a lovely example of community-inspired teamwork and generosity Saturday’s fundraiser at The Wexford was. Great food (those handmade potato chips were something else), fabulous entertainment (thank
you, ladies) and an awful lot of smiling faces. What more could one ask for from a sunny afternoon in Tsawwassen? I can only imagine the amount of effort that must have gone into organizing and hosting this event, and I’d like to extend my appreciation to John Meier and his hard-working

Separation will continue if we fail to remember
Editor: In light of what’s taking place at the U.S.-Mexico border, let’s review history: When immigrants entered Ellis Island children were separated from parents. During the Second World War chil-
dren were sent away from home in England without their parents. The B.C. government separated Doukhobor children from parents behind wired fences. Japanese families were separated in Second World War camps.
Children live in poverty away from their parents in immigration camps in Europe. Children are separated by divorce, war and social services. It will continue in our society. Lest we forget? Dale Pitts
Kind strangers come to aid of Tsawwassen senior
Editor: I am a resident at The Waterford. I was going for a walk down 56th Street and decided to go up on the grass to get out of the way of another couple on the sidewalk. The walker
fell over and I went over with it. Within minutes there was a man over with paper towel for my bloody nose, while two girls and a young couple were helping me as well. Also the
paramedics came. I am so grateful for everyone helping me. It’s just amazing how wonderful people are. I really appreciate how everyone responded and pitched in. Robert Bent

Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by overexposure to loud sounds. In some cases, the damage is only temporary. But repeated exposure to excessive noise for long periods such as heavy equipment, gun shots or prolonged exposure to loud music can cause permanent damage. Suggestions to make intersection safer for pedestrians
Editor: Regarding crosswalk safety at 56th Street and 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen, I have a couple of suggestions. First, don’t allow vehi-
cles to make a right turn on a red light for traffic heading north and south on 56th Street. Second, change crosswalk timing to allow pedestrians to com-
plete crossing cycle before allowing vehicles to proceed and turn right. This will slow traffic but pedestrian safety needs to be the greatest priority. Dorothy Mcleod

Protecting your personal information is now more important than ever. With the growth of identity theft, properly destroying any sensitive or confidential information is a must. Delta Gymnastics, Shred-Wise and Ladner Save-on-Foods are hosting their semi-annual shreda-thon in Ladner this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a barbecue and Spin the Wheel for prizes. Proceeds will be split between Delta Gymnastics and BC Children’s
Hospital Foundation. “Many people missed the January event so adding the second date was important to the community,” said Delta Gymnastics executive director Ana Arciniega. “We recognize the need to safeguard people’s confidential information and these shred events are not only perfect for safe disposal but provide a great opportunity for seasonal decluttering of your home or commercial office, storage room or personal files.”
Businesses and individuals are welcome to bring their bags and boxes of documents to the Ladner Save-on-Foods parking lot where a shredding truck will be stationed. Donations will be accepted by members of Delta Gymnastics who will assist with the removal of boxes. “We are extremely grateful that Shred-Wise is sponsoring this event that provides our community with this fantastic opportunity to help keep their identity safe,” said Arciniega.

Our readers’ choose their favourites once again Welcome to the 21 annual Readers’ Choice Awards special section. This feature recognizes and honours the businesses and individuals chosen by our readers as their favourite in specific categories. Winners were determined by ballots that ran in late May/early April and through an online survey. Readers were asked to write in their favourite in each of the categories. The businesses or individuals receiving the most votes were declared the Readers’ Choice winners. There are three different geographical areas from which they were chosen. The majority are in the South Delta area while there are some specifically from Ladner and Tsawwassen. That decision is based on whether or not a person would likely travel to get that product or service. For example if you live in Ladner you may not choose to take your dry cleaning to Tsawwassen so that is one of the areas where there are winners from both places. As you go through the list of winners they will be identified which area they are the readers’ choice. st
As part of the reception held earlier in June a number of businesses brought door prizes and over 40 attendees took home something other than just their Readers’ Choice framed certificate. We thank those merchants for making the evening that much more fun. As well, a big thank you goes to our host Beach Grove Golf Club who provided great food and service throughout the evening. The readers were also asked “What keeps you going back?” to the local businesses they enjoy. There were a variety of reasons and we had hundreds of responses of which a number are included in this section along with some photos of the businesses. We thank all of the readers who took time to tell us who their favourites are and why. It shows the strength of the local business community in South Delta. There were a number of categories were the voting was very close so we will see how they all do when we run our 22 Annual Readers’ Choice in 2019. nd

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE How seniors can preserve their brains
Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults. A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies: Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical
Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body. Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take. Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain. Keep a close-knit group of friends. Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.
Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion.

Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe.

Few families are fortunate enough to say they have not been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. A progressive, degenerative disease of the brain, Alzheimer’s impairs thinking and memory, accounting for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Though many people’s experiences with Alzheimer’s disease involve an elderly relative, the disease is not exclusive to the elderly. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early-onset Alzheimer’s, which most often appears when someone is in their 40s and 50s. In 2011, 59-year-old Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history and a beloved figure on the campus of the University of Tennessee, revealed that she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. That announcement opened the eyes of men and women across the country, who might otherwise never have known that dementia could strike so early or to someone who seemed as healthy as Summitt, who vowed to continue coaching despite the diagnosis. Because it can strike men and women even if they aren’t elderly, it’s important to know these 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s, courtesy of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer Society of Canada. 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. Memory loss is one of the most common
+
signs of Alzheimer’s. This is especially so if men and women forget things that happened very recently, which can negatively impact their daily lives. Additional signs include forgetting important dates and events; asking for the same information over and over again; or relying on memory aides such as reminder notes or even family members for things individuals could once remember on their own. 2. Difficulty planning. Some people might start to exhibit difficulty following a plan or working with numbers, be it following a recipe or paying the monthly bills. Concentration is often difficult for those exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer’s. 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Daily tasks such as driving to work or remembering the rules of a familiar game will prove difficult for people with Alzheimer’s. 4. Disorientation with regards to time and/or place. Nearly everyone has had momentary lapses where they forget what time it is or what day it is. But such lapses are not momentary for people with Alzheimer’s, who might even get lost on their own street and not remember how to get home. (continued on next page)

FOR BETTER RETIREMENT LIVING
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE The 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease 7. Misplacing things. People with Alzheimer’s might put things in unusual places and then experience difficulty retracing their steps to find those items. This tends to occur more frequently over time, and they often accuse others of stealing items they simply can’t find.
(continued from facing page)
Fearfulness or feelings of anxiety are changes in mood and personality that could indicate Alzheimer’s disease.
8. Decreased or poor judgement. Poor judgement, such as not visiting the doctor or mishandling finances, is another warning sign for Alzheimer’s. These poor decisions can extend to personal grooming, which men and women with Alzheimer’s might neglect.
5. Trouble understanding images and spatial relationships. Some people with Alzheimer’s have difficulty reading, judging distance or determining color or contrast. For example, a person with Alzheimer’s might walk past a mirror and not realize he or she is the person in the mirror.
9. Withdrawal from society. Men and women with Alzheimer’s might start to withdraw from society, removing themselves from social activities, projects at work or hobbies. Avid sports fans might no longer be able to follow their favourite team, while social butterflies might grow reclusive.
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer’s might experience trouble holding or joining a conversation. An example is stopping in the middle of a conversation and having no idea how to continue. They might also struggle with vocabulary, often having trouble finding the right word to express what they’re thinking.
10. Changes in mood and personality. People with Alzheimer’s might experience mood swings for no apparent reason and can become anxious, confused, depressed, fearful, or suspicious. Acting out of character might also be indicative of Alzheimer’s. More information about Alzheimer’s disease is available at www.alz.org and www.alzheimer.ca.

It’s a tournament Kyle Losse would have been thrilled to be a part of it. And that’s exactly what Brian and Niki Losse wanted to create in tribute to their son. In what will be the biggest baseball event in this region in recent memory, the inaugural Kyle Losse Memorial Tournament gets underway on Thursday at Winskill Park. It will feature nine of the top 10 Bantam age teams in the province and 15 in total — bringing together elite talent from the B.C. Minor and B.C. Premier leagues. “Something competitive like this is what he lived for,” said Brian. “He loved to compete.” Kyle was an outstanding young baseball talent who tragically passed away in January from a serious brain injury. The popular 14-year-old South Delta Secondary student would have been playing this season for the defending B.C. Minor champion Delta Tigers. In the months that have followed, the Losse family have been diligently working with the Tigers planning the five-day tournament. Brian and Niki know a thing or two about how these events come together as longtime volunteers with Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball at the coaching and executive levels respectively. The response has been overwhelming, not just from participating teams but the business community too. Topping the list is title sponsors Bold Construction and West Coast Building Supplies. “We want this to be the biggest tournament held in B.C. That’s what my vision was, making it very special him,” continued Brian. Everybody who is coming pretty much knew who he was. We want teams to have an enjoy-
able time and something for them to remember too.” “There is going to be lots of giveaways and lots of goodies,” added Niki. “There are going to be custom baseballs with his logo on it. Custom medals, a custom glove will be presented to the top pitcher of the tournament and bats for the MVPs.
Kyle Losse played for the 13U B.C. Selects last summer. The Tsawwassen standout tragically passed away in January.
“We also got tournament t-shirts made that most teams have already pre-ordered. We will be selling those too and baseballs as well for the people that come out to the park.” The timing of the event provides a preview of Baseball B.C.’s 15U AAA Provincial Championship, slated for early August in South Surrey. That tournament brings together B.C. Minor and B.C. Premier’s top teams to determine the provincial representative at Nationals. The host Tigers are enjoying another outstanding season and are two wins away from clinching first place in the B.C. Minor Baseball’s top 15U AAA tier. That will guarantee them a spot in South Surrey. Other than exhibition games, the Tigers don’t see the top PBL teams in a competitive environment — providing even more intrigue for this week’s tournament. The PBL contingent will be led by the Langley Blaze Blue and White Rock Tritons with 27-5 and 31-9 records respectively. The Tigers sit at 24-2. “It’s going to be awesome. I have been excited about this tournament since we knew it was going to happen,” said Tigers head coach Cam Frick. “All the PBL teams wanted to come and be part of it. “This tournament is not a one year thing. We are building something and, with work Brian and Niki are doing, people are going to want to come back. There were other teams that wanted to be here too but had already committed elsewhere so don’t be surprised to see an even bigger tournament next year.” Extra Bases… The Tigers’ first-year Blue team will also be part of the tournament and is enjoying a solid season in the B.C. Minor tier two division with a 14-11 record.

Pioneers bulk up roster with playoffs looming MARK BOOTH

An average freight train is about 4,000 times heavier than your car. Stay Safe. When driving near railroad tracks, always obey all posted signs and signals, and follow a few simple rules: Do not pass other vehicles near a crossing. Your view of the tracks may be obstructed or your speed may be too great to stop. Avoid stalls. Many crossings are on raised surfaces so shift gears ahead of or after the crossing to avoid getting stuck on the tracks. If your vehicle is stuck on a crossing, get out quickly and move away at a 45 degree angle. Call 911 or the listed emergency number.
The Ladner Pioneers have loaded up their war chest as they prepare to defend their West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association championship and return to the President’s Cup national championships for the second straight year. The Pioneers made it three straight wins on Sunday night with a key 14-10 triumph in Coquitlam to improve to 8-4-0 on the season and leapfrog the Adanacs into third place in the league standings. Former Delta Islanders standout Spencer Bromley made his season debut with a goal and four assists, just hours after returning from school down south. He was a key contributor during last season’s run to the WCSLA title. The Pioneers also unveiled their latest edition at the back — National Lacrosse League veteran Pete McFetridge. The 32-year-old not only provides a major presence on defence but leadership too. “It’s huge for us to have a guy with that much experience in the NLL and WLA,” said head coach Ross Frehlick. “It’s almost like having an assistant coach on the floor just sharing his knowledge with the younger guys.”
Three days earlier, the Pioneers welcomed back Sam Clare to the line-up from an off-season leg injury in a 13-3 home floor win over the Valley Rebels. The hometown product is a huge part of his team’s transition game since he decided to move into a defensive role last season. Former Islanders sniper Cody Nass scored in his Ladner debut against Valley. Tyler Kirby led the way against Coquitlam with four goals while Nathan Clare and Jack Berry each scored twice as the Pioneers opened up a commanding 12-6 lead after two periods. “I don’t think in all my years as a player and coach have we scored goals like this team has,” added Frehlick. “Now if we can get our defence up to the same level we will be right where we want to be.” The club has also added Surrey native Dylan LaCroix who has spent the past two seasons in the WLA with the Thunder. He is expected to be in the line-up on Thursday when the Nanaimo Timbermen (8-3-0) visit Ladner at 7 p.m. The 2018 President’s Cup hosts are loading up their roster with the addition of WLA all-star Cory Conway, while 2018 NLL playoff MVP Jeff Shattler from the Saskatchewan Rush is expected to play his first game on Thursday.
