2020 HIGHLIGHTS Congratulations to our fellow grads of 2020! This year was full of bumps in the road and unexpected challenges, but we persevered and made the best of it. The great thing about our school is that everyone has their own little memories that have truly defined their experience as a Pacer. As our time as high school students comes to a close, we know that many of us have spent time thinking of what we’re missing out on. This pandemic has taken a lot from us, but it has also given us the ability to push through even the most challenging of times. Friendships have grown stronger -- we need each other’s support even more in a time like this. Many of us are upset at the grad events we have missed due to current global events. But there are a large number of positives that we can draw from our experience. We’ve been lucky enough to work together as a grad class and we cannot forget the Boat Cruise,
Semi-formal and even way back to the grade eight tug-of-war. Our sports teams have had many successes with several Provincial appearances over the years. Even if you missed some of those events, everybody made memories with friends, old and new. So, let’s take this opportunity to celebrate our victories and accomplishments. We cannot forget to say how grateful we are for our families. In or out of school, you were there to support us along our way these past five years. Thank you as you guided us on the path to success. And thank you to the teachers and administration who have prepared us well for the challenges that we will face through their support in academics, athletics, theatre and band. Who would have thought five years could go by so fast! Although it felt short, the bonds made will last a lifetime. ~ Brennan Katsube, Valedictorian and Jena Benson, Grad Council Co-Chair

THE GRAD BOAT CRUISE IN VANCOUVER (OCTOBER 2019) & 2020 SENIOR SEMI-FORMAL (MARCH 2020)
ongratulations to the Graduating Class of 2020 and the successful completion of your five-year journey at Delta Secondary. I am excited for the many new, exciting challenges and adventures that await you. Your future holds endless possibilities and you can accomplish anything you set your mind to—the world is ready for you to make your mark on it. Over your five years, you have personified what it means to be a Pacer—Participate, Achieve, Care, Explore and Respect. As a graduating class you have demonstrated initiative, creativity, knowledge, talent and compassion as well as being incredibly articulate and resilient. I have been impressed with your commitment, responsibility and the respect you have shown all members of our school community. Each day, you have reminded me of how amazing of a group you are and why Delta Secondary is such an amazing school community. This year was also an unprecedented one because of the COVID-19 pandemic, an event that will live forever in the history books. When future generations look back and inquire my hope is that you will share all the positive takeaways that came from this pandemic; the importance of family and friends to guide us through those difficult times, the appreciation for the little things and the realized belief that as a collective, cohesive group, we can make a difference. It has been my pleasure to work, learn and serve as your administrator over these past five years. On behalf of all the staff, I extend my best wishes to all of you. Congratulations, Class of 2020!

2020 HIGHLIGHTS If I had to describe the grad class of 2020 in three words they would be inseparable, welcoming and unforgettable. Although our senior year was cut short, the memories, friendships and knowledge we gained will stay with us forever. As a grad class, over the years we have created a bond between us that welcomes anyone to feel accepted. From sports teams to theatre productions, I believe we are one of the most talented grad years. We will never forget the school spirit at the annual rival basketball game or the exhilarated crowds at the Extrav each year. This year has been one to remember with our very “unique” graduation, but through it all we have come together instead of being pushed apart. I consider myself very lucky to be a part of such a fun and outgoing class. I asked several of my
classmates to tell me their “Senior year highlight” and this is what we loved and will miss: Lunch in the grad parking lot, cheering on the football team, dance battles at Boat Cruise, dressing up as skiers for Halloween, snowshoeing for Superfit, Mr. Westinghouse teaching us to “move from the literal to the conceptual,” but most importantly being together with friends. We could’ve spent the last moments of our high school experiences thinking of all the things we didn’t get to do but instead we look back at all the amazing memories we made together. 300 words cannot begin to describe all the special moments we have had but, I’d like to say to all my 2020 classmates, good luck and I know you’ll all do amazing things no matter where life takes you and of course...GO DEVILS!! ~ Sydney Geboers, Grade 12

A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL TERRY AINGE
A
s this remarkable school year comes to a close, we bid farewell to South Delta Secondary’s Class of 2020. It’s been a year when we’ve been forced to pause. And through this unbelievable experience we have learned how fragile civilization is, and perhaps we have become aware for the very first time how much effort it takes to exist, and how much care and attention it requires to continue. In our essential service workers, we’ve witnessed ordinary people doing extraordinary things, with incredible bravery and dedication. We’ve learned that all of us have the capacity to be heroes and to be helpers. In our community, we’ve seen unprecedented levels of cooperation, patience, and sacrifice. We’ve acted selflessly for the greater good, and with compassion for those whose health is compromised and whose age has made them most vulnerable. We’ve learned that our everyday lives are not something to be taken for granted.

When we come out of this, we will all still struggle with the regular frustrations and challenges of daily life. But perhaps in a way that is deeper than before, we’ll enjoy the friendships and the relationships that are fostered on our journey, and we’ll do so with a broader appreciation of everything that enables us to live in one of the most amazing and abundant places on Earth. Congratulations to the class of 2020! May you always strive to be the best version of yourselves and may you continue to remind us of what can be when a community connects, cares, respects, and shows resiliency. Safe journeys! ~ Mr. Terry Ainge, Principal South Delta Secondary School
