Ian Gallagher constantly striving for success Ian Jacques Contributing Writer

Director looks at the Delta Hockey Academy as a complete youth development program Ian Gallagher is never one to rest on his laurels. In fact, he has little time for rest at all. As director of the Delta Hockey Academy, Gallagher and his staff are constantly striving to reach higher goals for themselves, the program and, most importantly, the players. Gallagher was a successful teacher and area scout for the Vancouver Giants in Edmonton and has been involved in the training of athletes, from amateur to professional, for most of his life. He arrived in Delta back in 2004 when, through a partnership between the Delta School District and the Giants, the hockey academy was created at South Delta Secondary. At the time, the supplemental training program provided two on ice sessions and dryland training during school hours, typically in lieu of PE and another elective. “The desire was there to create a program that no one had really ever done,” recalls Gallagher, who also became the strength and conditioning coach for the Giants at the same time.“When we started, the program was supplemental in nature, which meant kids played on their own club teams and did their extra training with us. As the potential to offer the entire package emerged, our academy was the first one in the Lower Mainland to offer that structure.” With personnel and front office changes with the Giants this season, Gallagher is no longer with the Western Hockey League team, but is excited to focus all his efforts on the academy. “This has grown so much and requires a lot of time and energy, so my focus is on the school board and duties with this program and I’ll support the Giants from afar,” he says. “The whole concept of sport programming in hockey has grown immensely to the point where within a couple of years there will be national championships. We have attracted new programs out of Saskatchewan, two programs in Manitoba. This model is very much desired and needed by the hockey family, so it’s filling a niche and

lots of people are migrating into this area.” The ultimate goal of the academy is to graduate players into higher levels of hockey, such as the Western Hockey League, British Columbia Hockey League or junior “B” circuits, but Gallagher sees the program as a catalyst to creating other opportunities for athletes down the road. That might be in other sports, in other areas of study or different career paths. “We look at ourselves as more of a complete youth growth development program. We are supporting student-athletes. We are combining education and athletics in a lifestyle that families are finding finding conducive to sleep, to studies, family relations and other sports and this model is very much desired by the families,” he says. “When we started in 2004, we certainly had a vision in mind, but just like our players, we want to stay very shortsighted and expand our influence influence on the game step-by-step.” Gallagher, whose son Brendan, a former Giant who now stars for the Montreal Canadiens, says Delta’s program played a key role in the expansion of the academy model in B.C. and the initial relationship with the Giants certainly helped with its rapid growth. “All our models have the same purpose in mind — work towards the best enhancement of student-athletes in the game of hockey — and we are very excited about that. “The key that parents are looking for is the professional coaching and what that Giant envelope provided was a brand and access to coaches who have a wealth of hockey development and experience. We have continued to employ the philosophy of having the best coaches around.”Despite all the success the academy has enjoyed, Gallagher is quick to point out that no one is celebrating — at least not too much.“The success and the growth of the academy has been tremendous. A lot of hard work has been put in by a lot of people, both from within the academy to everyone at the school district,” he says. “This is not ‘my’ academy, it is ‘our’ academy. This is by no means all about me.“When you talk about success, we like to define define ourselves as much by the average experience, but we have also had lots of players who have continued on in their further

studies. We are proud of our athletes who come in and develop skill sets that are just not applicable to hockey, but are academic and life skills.” So success aside, what continues to drive Gallagher every day? “The enthusiasm of the participants. When you take a look at the population that you are guiding and you see the energy and enthusiasm, it’s reverse motivating,” he says.

Renie D’Aquila excited about a new child development centre for Ladner

If you wanted to come up with an analogy for the Reach Child and Youth Development Society, The Little Engine That Could would be a fitting one. The society, which has been helping kids with special needs and their families for over 50 years, held a groundbreaking ceremony in June for its $5-million child development centre in Ladner and recently received funding commitments that will “close the door” on construction costs for the project. The society’s executive director, Renie D’Aquila, expects it to be “a bit of a new generation” for Reach as it will be able to serve more families once it relocates to a larger facility in the heart of Ladner. “The cornerstone of Reach’s success with families and in the community has been its ability to respond to families’ needs and the community’s needs and our location became a barrier for us,” she says during an interview at the non-profit society’s current home on 72nd Street in rural East Ladner. It’s been a long haul getting to where they’re at now, she says. The new centre is a partnership between Reach, the Corporation of Delta and the Ladner Tsawwassen Kinsmen Club. Construction is expected to be finished by next September and the plan is to be fully moved in by January of 2018. D’Aquila says although fundraising efforts for construction costs have concluded, Reach still needs to come up with funding for items like the phone and security systems, furniture and appliances. Fundraising for those items will continue as construction proceeds. The 20,000-square-foot centre, located adjacent to the Ladner Pioneer Library on 47th Avenue, will include therapy and counselling rooms, specialized lending libraries and an inclusive preschool with an accessible playground. “I think the main thing we’re excited about is its location. Being a block from downtown Ladner, and

being next to Memorial Park, right beside the library, right beside the Boys and Girls Club there, it’s going to be … natural for us to help families connect to those kind of supports as well,” says D’Aquila. “We see our role as being in families’ lives for a short of time, helping to increase their capacity so that they can work with their kids and support their kids throughout their life, support them through the challenges associated with coming to grips with having a new diagnosis and also how to encourage their children’s development when it doesn’t naturally occur.” Reach currently serves about 1,000 families annually. Its goal at the new centre, over time, is to double that number. D’Aquila, who has a background in business management, got involved with Reach over two decades ago. Her middle son was two when he was diagnosed with developmental coordination disorder, a severe learning disability. He was more than two levels behind his peers in language and actually got kicked out of preschool. “Our family was really struggling and our child was really struggling,” she says. That’s when they connected with Reach and “experienced first-hand first-hand what help can do at an early age.” Her son went into kindergarten basically at par with his peers, she says. Now in his mid-20s, he works in a competitive job, has a girlfriend who lives with him, has bought his own condo and has a very good quality of life, she says. Because of her son’s experience, D’Aquila joined the group’s board with the hope of helping other children. She moved into the role of executive director 18 years ago when her predecessor had to take a leave and then decided not to come back. Her role involves acting as the liaison between the board and staff. In Reach’s case, there are two boards, the foundation, which raises funds, and the society board, which oversees the programs and sets the direction of the organization. Reach offers a variety of programs designed to meet a wide range of developmental needs, according to its website.

B4 PEOPLE TO KNOW THE DELTA OPTIMIST OCTOBER 2016

Really what it’s all about is quality of life, D’Aquila says. “That’s the ultimate goal that we’re working on with everyone. We’re not necessarily trying to always fix everybody but more to see where are the stumbling blocks that will impact an individual’s quality of life and help them… to get those things out of the way.” D’Aquila lives in Tsawwassen with her husband. They have three grown sons.

eannette McLaren and the staff at Robertson Optical & Optometry are pleased to introduce our new optometrist, Dr. Vicki Chen.

e, at Hawaiian Beach, cannot possibly touch on all the benefits of Vitamin D in this space. For your health’s sake though we implore you and your friends to check some of the following books and world renowned experts on google.web.

Dr. Vicki Chen graduated with a Doctorate in Optometry and Bachelors of Science in Optometry, from the New England College of Optometry. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia and has received extensive clinical training in ocular disease detection and management at both the Providence Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Rhode Island and Omni Eye Care services in New Jersey where she worked alongside ophthalmologists from different specialties. Dr. Vicki also received specialty contacts lens training in Miami, Florida.

Remember through all your google research that you may find it said that all beneficial effects of Vitamin D that are produced by sunlight exposure are also produced by the use of some tanning beds.

Merly Patricio

The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach do emit some UVB rays (like the sun) but in a controlled environment. This helps our skin to produce Vitamin D and elevate blood levels of Vitamin D.

Dr. Vicki focuses on early disease detection, prevention and care. Most importantly, she enjoys taking the time to educate her patients and helping them see clearly!

Dr. Vicki Chen

Dr. Vicki grew up in 3 different countries; China, Japan and North American. She decided to move back to the beautiful Vancouver area after working in Manhattan, New York for a year. Outside of the office, Dr. Vicki enjoys traveling, snowboarding and discovering hidden gems of the city. Dr. Vicki is excited to grow her practice in Ladner and looks forward to taking care of all your family’s eye care needs. f you want to get an idea of the range of products Budget Blinds’ consultants can provide to add new life and vibrancy to your home decor – from custom shutters, blinds and draperies to a wide variety of matching bedding and accents – there are two local showroom locations you can visit. This family run franchise, which serves Delta, White Rock and South Surrey areas, has its main hub showroom, offices and warehouse in the Tilbury industrial Park in Delta (Unit #125-7391 Vantage Way).

Tara Anderson, who co-owns the franchise with her husband David, says you truly see and feel the full benefit of Budget Blinds’ personalized, one-stop service once you make an appointment for an in-home consultation. “We come to you – and that’s from the initial consultation right through installation,” she says. “It’s the simplicity, ease and comfort of not having to leave your own home,” she adds. “With other stores it’s just a cashier – you pay, you walk out with the product, end of story. With us, you don’t have to worry about something being the wrong size or measurements, we have the best warranties in the business, they pick what they want and get what they ask for.”

1st Row: Dr. Sereena Uppal, Dr. Dave Parker & Dr. Mark Malowney 2nd Row: Michael Reoch, Barb Francis & Marcia Wright

Working with a customers’ in their own homes also means it’s easier for Budget Blinds’ consultants to help them find just the look they want – seeing the actual space and existing decor, there’s no guesswork or miscommunication. “Everything is custom-made and installed,” Anderson says. “It’s their own vision we are trying to help them achieve.” Budget Blinds will have been offering their services in this area for more than 9 years - and the business is consistently growing, Anderson said. “We have an office manager, a receptionist, three full-time sales staff and full-time installers.” Extra help is welcome and appreciated she says, as she and David manage the needs of the business with having four daughters - all under the age of 11, “life is always a balancing act for us - never boring for sure”- said Anderson. Being family people themselves makes them more aware of the importance of community and exceptional customer service, she says. “We try to involve the whole family (including our extended family-our staff) in what we do wherever possible, and we’re always interested in giving back through special events and sponsorships and in particular teaching our kids the value of hard work.”

ver twenty five years ago, two eager career women decided to try their hand at selling cruises. Carole Petersen and Gina Holvick opened the sixth center, in what is now a chain of over 150 Expedia CruiseShipCenters North America wide. Having seen such a great success with Richmond, Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Carole and Gina decided it was time to branch out and set up their second center here in ”Sunny South Delta”.

September 8th marked the fifth anniversary at our Ladner Harbour Centre Mall location. We have thoroughly enjoyed becoming a part of the community and gaining recognition. We are an active participant of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, and we were again this year awarded by the community “Best Travel Agency” though the Delta Optimist Readers Choice Awards. And throughout the year you will find out doors open to the public as we hold special cruise information evenings.

Expedia CruiseShipCenters Carole and Gina have become such great leaders amongst their peers in the industry but more importantly, as franchise owners, they have become role models within the organization of Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Because of their success they are often sought out for advice from new and veteran owners alike. With a great work ethic and pride in their business it only seems fitting that Carole and Gina staff their office with only “The Best”. In our Sunny South Delta office our team has well over 60 years of combined experience in the cruise and travel industry. With this experience rest assured that you will be in good hands. After all, who better to help you plan your next vacation then someone who has been there. So no matter which corner of the globe you are looking at; from the Polynesian culture of the South Pacific, to the plains of the Serengeti or taking in the sights and smells of the Spice Market in Istanbul, chances are one of our sales team has been there and we are only too happy to share our stories with you. Come let us WOW you and discover why so many satisfied customers choose Expedia CruiseShipCenters to book their travel year after year.

To Plan Or Not To Plan Some Real-Life Experiences

There’s no question about it. Thinking about our own mortality is not something that’s easy for any of us. But facing up to reality and making the necessary preparations for our own funerals – planning logistics, coordinating providers and handling all the other details may well be one of the most selfless and loving acts we’ll ever perform.

or over 13 years with Goldsmith Niels Johanson at the helm, on-site jewelry repairs have been an integral part of the family business at Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe. Lately, the growth in this area has been overwhelming, showing us the level of trust you have placed in us to repair your treasured jewelry pieces.

After all, leaving your family with the task of making choices and negotiating prices at a time of great emotional strain can only add to their grief and sense of loss. It may also result in their making selections that are not only unwarranted but needlessly expensive as well.

To handle increased demand in jewelry repairs, we have hired Goldsmith Ramon Cruz. With over 18 years of experience himself, Ramon—alongside with Niels will provide custom and expert repair services. There has never been a better time to come by to have your jewelry repairs completed!

Even if you live near your family in a close-knit community, the choices to be made among funeral homes, florists and cemeteries can be overwhelming to your family. And if you’re a relative newcomer to your community, or without family members living nearby, arranging your own memorial celebration ahead of time is absolutely essential.

Not only is Ramon a talented goldsmith, but he can complete minor watch repair and watch battery replacement. He has a strong knowledge of custom design and can make those suggestions of how to re-purpose jewelry to make it fabulous and wearable. Come in and meet Ramon! You may even hear him singing in the back of the shop!

Steve tries to educate all his customers daily on the importance of buying the right vacuum for their home & also the environment. “We are polluting our landfills with so many cheap plastic vacuums that are disposable Steve says.. “You get what you pay for like anything else. The fancy ads and commercials on TV don’t impress Steve at all. “Just come in and ask me I’m a serviceman (over 28 years) before I’m a salesman! I’ll give you my 28 years free advice before you purchase your vacuum Steve says” I will give you a nonbiased opinion as I fix & service hundreds of vacuums monthly at my shop... I can tell you what comes in to be serviced too often and which makes & models to maybe shy away from. “Tammy says its important to make sure our customers know that when you purchase a vacuum from Vacuumworks you can get all the bags, filters parts and yes it can be serviced in our shop as well as warranty work. It’s a shame we see too many customers frustrated daily because they cannot get the bags, Hepa filters or parts for their vacuum they purchased at one of the big box stores”. Vacuum Works prides themselves with their old-fashioned customer service & trust. Building long relationships with our customers and offering competitive prices to our local clientele. I will announce on my website and through the Optimist when I am ready to once again offer veterinary housecall services. elta Hospital Foundation is dedicated to ensuring the best healthcare possible for our community today and for future generations. With our donors’ generous support, we contribute funds for the purchase of critically needed medical equipment, and to support Delta Hospital staff in their education and training. We also work to expand the services of Delta Hospital through capital campaign projects.

With the support of our community, we raised a record-breaking $7.5 million to go towards the new Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building. This is the biggest expansion project in Delta Hospital’s history and will make a significant impact on healthcare services in Delta. amilies today are looking for hope in a difficult world. As a counsellor in Ladner Village, I help families with anxiety, family separation, parenting, grief, trauma, and other issues that affect well-being. In addition to counselling, I use therapeutic play with children and infant massage instruction for new parents to help calm chaotic lives.

As a parent myself, I know how difficult it is to raise kids with all of the pressures families face. No parent is perfect – nor should we be! – but parents can learn to have a happier home and positive relationships with their kids. My mission is to help South Delta families find hope and resilience by looking what they have that is good and building on that foundation.
