Principal at home in both communities Terry Ainge enjoying his time at South Delta Secondary South Delta Secondary is feeling like home now for Terry Ainge. He’s entering his fourth year as principal of the Tsawwassen high school after spending more than five years in the same role at Delta Secondary. The transition from Ladner to Tsawwassen has gone well, he says, noting there are so many connections between the two communities. There are lots students who live in one community and go to high school in the other. When Ainge, 51, arrived at SDSS there were many folks he was already familiar with, including several staff members. “Anytime you make a change, you’re moving into the unknown but the community’s been very welcoming here… The students, the staff, the parents have all been very welcoming and it definitely feels like home now. The transition’s been really good.” He points out he really enjoyed his assignment at DSS. “I enjoyed the staff and the students there. I had familiarity with DSS because I’d taught there as well as attended there as a student so that was kind of a unique experience to have that.” He says he’s thankful for having the opportunity there and that he worked with some really great teachers at the Ladner high school. He says there’s a really collaborative, student-centered environment at DSS, something that’s “very similar in that regard to what we have here at South Delta.” When it comes to some of the changes he’s seen over the course of his nearly three-decade career in education, Ainge points to technology as a big one. “Our real challenge is helping our students shift from using technology as recreation to technology as a tool to learn and to represent their learning and so on,” he says. “That will be a continuing theme.” Another noticeable change is the amount of choices students have when it comes to programs. “There’s so many options for students now. We’ve got more students doing blended, brick and mortar

classroom studies and combining that with online.” He notes that when parents come into the school, a typical reaction is, ‘Wow, has school ever changed.’ “If we’re in schools, we see the pace of that change moving quite slowly but I think for anybody who’s been away from school for a time, to come back, I think it’s quite noticeable for them.” A Ladner resident, Ainge is married and has two daughters. One is a DSS graduate while the other is still attending the local high school. Ainge also has experience coaching high school athletics. As a principal, he did some basketball coaching at DSS and was quite involved coaching football and basketball during his time as a teacher and then as a vice-principal. “At South Delta we’re covered quite well, so they don’t really need me,” he says with a laugh. It’s really cool for kids to have a passion at school, says Ainge, who won a Vanier Cup national football championship playing for UBC in the mid-1980s. “It could be arts, it could be performance. For a lot of kids, it’s sports.” He says some of his best teaching has occurred when he was coaching. “Sports are a really good venue for learning important life lessons. The consequences are never really that horrible, because there’s always another game coming up.” The job of a principal includes a lot of thought and planning to make sure things run the way they should as well as being agile and able to adapt to the different contingencies that come up throughout the day, he explains. It’s also all about relationships. “The relationships with staff, and students and parents. I think in Delta, we work together well. When you look at what we’ve been able to accomplish around the district vision, it’s all built around collaboration and supporting students and supporting our staff to continue to grow. “I think that’s definitely a strength of Delta, no matter what school you’re at.”

Nancy Macey ensures we take care of our own

Delta Hospice founder has endured her own personal losses A walk of faith. That’s how Nancy Macey describes her 25year journey as executive director of the Delta Hospice Society. From its humble beginnings at her kitchen table to one of the most advanced hospice facilities in the province, Macey says she still can’t believe what has been accomplished. “It’s beyond anyone’s ability to do this. I wasn’t a community builder. I didn’t know anything about fundraising. I was just a person that lived here and saw a need.” Macey trained in occupational and physical therapy at UBC. After graduating and working in the field for a few years, she put her career on hold to raise a family, but when her kids grew up and she was no longer needed to help out at school or drive someone to an activity, she wondered what direction her life would take. “After being out of the workforce for 20 years, it was a real search for meaning,” she recalls. “I started volunteering down at the Kinsmen with their walking support group and then I took some hospice training at Delta Hospital. After that something just triggered inside me.” Two significant personal losses are also at the root of her hospice efforts. Macey lost her 10-year-old brother to a drowning accident in their neighbour’s pool when she was only six. “It was devastating for our family. There was no support, we all lived with it internally. My mom would break down all the

time and I feared I would lose my mom,” she says. “At 15 my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he died when I was 20. I think it created a lot of anxiety in my life, so when I took the hospice training, I was drawn to do something.” In those early years, Delta Hospice began to slowly grow, establishing a foundation that eventually set the stage for a major fundraising campaign to build the stand-alone facilities that exist today in the Ladner civic precinct. The Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care reaches out to people living with life-threatening illnesses, offers wellness programs and counselling, visits schools to support youth in grief, and offers grief support for either a sudden death or anticipated death. The Irene Thomas Hospice is a home away from home with expert medical care, emotional support, home cooked meals, private rooms and a garden for families and friends to share. Macey is quick to point out, however, that she didn’t do any of this on her own. There are currently 130 client volunteers that make a difference in the lives of those living with life-threatening illnesses, their families, and those experiencing grief and loss. Volunteers at the Hospice Cottage thrift store raise funds to support hospice services. It’s estimated the volunteers contribute more than 38,000 hours of service annually.

Residence hospice support worker Nicky Hemenway has been with hospice almost from day one. She has seen firsthand the impacts that have been made on the community. “It’s huge to have such a supportive environment in such a small community. Not only do we care for the families and the patients, but the supportive care services – the counselling and the bereavement support that is offered to the families is first class,” she says. Clinical counsellor Debra Wolinski, has only been working in Delta for two months, but already she sees why this is such a special place. “The second I walked in for my pre-interview I could feel the peace and the calmness here,” says Wolinski. “Death is not an easy topic at the best of times and when you are in the midst of it, it can be even more challenging, so to provide a vehicle and an opportunity for people to feel what they need to feel in a supportive, caring, non-judgmental environment is really important.” For Macey, passion and hard work keep her motivated. “The hard work is extremely meaningful in the sense of what a difference it has made to families to have the support. To me, it’s about community. We need to take care of our own in our community. All I wanted to do was make sure people didn’t suffer. “God has given me a calling and a purpose. I’m grateful for that every day.”

omeone once said “if you choose a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Not only do we get to do what we love but we get to work with our family. Delta Carpets was started in 1967 by Albert Beeksma as a one man operation. Here we are almost 50 years later, still family owned and operated and we’ve grown not only beyond our core staff, but in product as well. Back in the 60’s carpet and vinyl were all the rage and now there’s so much more we have to offer. Hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, tile, cork, area rugs, maintenance products and of course, lots of carpet and vinyl all in our 3000 square foot showroom. Our customers are everything; we really care and love to help. Flooring is a big decision and can be difficult and confusing. Our goal is to help you find what you love regardless of size and budget.

ver twenty-six years ago, two eager career women decided to try their hand at selling cruises. Carole Petersen and Gina Holvick opened the sixth store, in what is now a chain of over 230 Expedia CruiseShipCenters North America wide. Having seen such a great success with Richmond, Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Carole and Gina decided it was time to branch out and set up their second store here in ”Sunny South Delta”.

In January of this year they made a huge decision and sold their Richmond Center. South Delta has become their home base and community. September 8th marked the seventh anniversary of our Ladner store and we could not be happier. Located in Harbour Center Mall, business has been soaring. We have been getting our name out there, gaining recognition and we are enjoying becoming a part of the community. We have been making our presence known in a number of ways. We have joined the Delta Chamber of Commerce as well as taking part in the Sun Festival. We are also hosting our own trade shows such as our recent World Explorer Event at Delta Town and Country Inn which was a great success with about 200 people in attendance.

Expedia CruiseShipCenters

Carole and Gina have become such great leaders amongst their peers in the industry but more importantly, as franchise owners, they have become role models within the organization of Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Because of their success they are often sought out for advice from new and veteran owners alike. With a great work ethic and pride in their business it only seems fitting that Carole and Gina staff their office with only “The Best”. In our Sunny South Delta office our team has well over 60 years of combined experience in the cruise and travel industry. With this experience rest assured that you will be in good hands. After all, who better to help you plan your next vacation then someone who has been there. So no matter which corner of the globe you are looking at; from the Polynesian culture of the South Pacific, to the plains of the Serengeti or taking in the sights and smells of the Spice Market in Istanbul, chances are one of our sales team has been there and we are only too happy to share our stories with you. Come let us WOW you and discover why so many satisfied customers choose Expedia CruiseShipCenters to book their travel year after year.

teve and Tammy have been family operated as Vacuum Works in Ladner for almost 18 years. They proudly sell & service only premium quality portable, commercial & HEPA Central Vacuum systems as well as environmentally friendly, commercial cleaning products. “Basically we have everything that you’ll need to keep a healthy clean home & we proudly carry Products from Germany, Denmark & Sweden & Their tagline is “Everything we sell sucks”.

Steve tries to educate all his customers daily on the importance of buying the right vacuum Steve and Tammy for their home & also the environment. “We are polluting our landfills with so many cheap plastic vacuums that are disposable Steve says.. “You get what you pay for like anything else. The fancy ads and commercials on TV don’t impress Steve at all. “Just come in and ask me I’m a serviceman (over 28 years) before I’m a salesman! I’ll give you my 28 years free advice before you purchase your vacuum Steve says” I will give you a nonbiased opinion as I fix & service hundreds of vacuums monthly at my shop... I can tell you what comes in to be serviced too often and which makes & models to maybe shy away from. “Tammy says its important to make sure our customers know that when you purchase a vacuum from Vacuumworks you can get all the bags, filters parts and yes it can be serviced in our shop as well as warranty work. It’s a shame we see too many customers frustrated daily because they cannot get the bags, Hepa filters or parts for their vacuum they purchased at one of the big box stores”. Vacuum Works prides themselves with their old-fashioned customer service & trust. Building long relationships with our customers and offering competitive prices to our local clientele. Come on in and get educated about the right vacuum for your home. We are in the save on foods mall 5146 Ladner Trunk Rd. We are open six days a week Mon - Fri: 9:30am to 5:30pm; Sat: 10am to 5:00pm.

am looking forward to resuming my veterinary house call practice in early 2018! Please check my website for updates. Fortunately, my treatments for breast cancer, since July 2015, have gone well. My sincere apologies to those I have not been able to help or respond to during this challenging time. Meanwhile, please see the alternate housecall services provided on my website. I would like to express my respect for ALL those in our community who volunteer to help others in need. One great example is “Food On The Corner.” See their heart warming story on www.foodonthecorner.ca or call Tom at 604-803-5174. Through Food On The Corner, caring Delta volunteers - for 34 years! - including senior home groups, lend a hand to people in dire need in the “downtown east side” of Vancouver. They prepare sandwiches and homemade hot soup for 100 to 200 people for Saturday morning. Anything homemade or bought, that one can enjoy eating “as is” can also be donated at the truck on Saturday. Sleeping bags or clothes for rain or snow can be dropped off too. Every Saturday, the “Food On The Corner”’s large white truck parks BEHIND the mall, next to Tsawwassen’s Thrifty’s, at approximately 9:30 am. Volunteers bring their treats, sandwiches and hot soup . Individual donations brought to the truck are also always appreciated! The truck volunteers bring your contributions the same morning - rain or snow - to a busy street corner, for people in real need in the downtown east side area. In addition, they share with local shelters there, in need of meals. Christian fellowship is offered to those interested. Through Food On The Corner, Delta volunteers give hope, caring and respect to those struggling to live in the downtown east side area.

here’s no question about it. Thinking about our own mortality is not something that’s easy for any of us. But facing up to reality and making the necessary preparations for our own funerals – planning logistics, coordinating providers and handling all the other details may well be one of the most selfless and loving acts we’ll ever perform.

After all, leaving your family with the task of making choices and negotiating prices at a time of great emotional strain can only add to their grief and sense of loss. It may also result in their making selections that are not only unwarranted but needlessly expensive as well. Even if you live near your family in a close-knit community, the choices to be made among funeral homes, florists and cemeteries can be overwhelming to your family. And if you’re a relative newcomer to your community, or without family members living nearby, arranging your own memorial celebration ahead of time is absolutely essential. Come and see us. There is no obligation, but you will receive some valuable information.

Passionate about the power of sport and physical activity to change lives, Carla has volunteered locally, nationally, and internationally, including with the International Paralympic Committee and for the Toronto 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games. She has been President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Chair of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. Carla was on the Board of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, and was Vice-Chair of the Delta Gymnastics Society. As an athlete, Carla won three Paralympic and four World Championship medals in swimming.

n 2015, we started with a dream to provide integrated health services to meet the needs of our community regardless of income. We started with Andrew’s small private counselling practice, and we’ve expanded to two offices, over 10 staff, and services that include counselling, occupational therapy, neurofeedback, therapeutic yoga, therapeutic arts, pelvic rehabilitation, dialectical behaviour therapy and more. What excites us most is the realization of a dream: to do the right thing, for the right reasons, and base our fees on the income of our clients. We’re grateful that we get to provide award winning services, and to be able to say that we’ve provided over $125,000 in subsidized services in under 2 years and have never turned anyone away for financial reasons. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for your support and for making the dream of Alongside You come true for us, and for the community. We’re here for the long haul, and if we can be of help to you, please call us.

With our technical background and expertise we can help you put together any aspects of your home gym, including flooring and equipment, or commercial fitness facilities. And we are very proud to have been chosen by TRUE Fitness to distribute their product lines within BC; Tony has seen many models of equipment over the years and, for example, TRUE products have lasted for 15 to 20 years in a residential environment due to their commercial-level design of residential equipment. We at Tower Fitness invite you to take a drive to our showroom in Tilbury Industrial Park to see and try out a wide selection of commercial and residential equipment.

We have a full selection of residential & commercial equipment.

avid was born and educated in engineering in Ireland. He came to BC in 1978 and worked in consulting engineering before switching to contracting in 1986. O’Sullivan worked as a Project Manager for a utility contractor, but seeing a better method David moved that company into trenchless production using pipe bursting, horizontal directional drilling and micro tunneling in the 90’s. PW Trenchless Ltd. was created by O’Sullivan in 2000 as an adjunct to the utility firm. PW Trenchless has grown exponentially through the numerous years of experience of its team and by the company’s educational outreach efforts through the North American David O’Sullivan Society for Trenchless Technology, BC Chapter (NASTT-BC). David believes that marketing trenchless construction through education is the best form of recognizing this revolutionary concept of installing underground piping and utilities with much less disturbance to the road surfaces, with less impact and lower cost. P W Trenchless now employees over 30 people in BC and uses “Trenchless procedures which are more environmentally friendly because they can reduce dust, pollution and noise”. PW Trenchless was instrumental in developing a carbon calculator and having it approved by the BC Government for Trenchless. That calculator has now been copied in various countries as a carbon reduction strategy. It allows cities to get a carbon credit for their trenchless program as trenchless emits up to 70% less carbon that traditional open cut. This is a benefit to local governments worldwide. This demonstrates the leadership of BC on carbon reduction.

Alexandra Toth – Hardware/Housewares Manager Alex came to Canadian Tire from Food Services, and with a young family, was looking to build a career. Over the past year she has shown the drive and initiative to move up to her current management position. With everything from pet food to tools in her department there is a huge learning curve that she is enjoying very much. “The customer service oriented training is second to none,” Alex said. The great staff and working conditions make her job very enjoyable. Flora Yang – Office Manager A Tsawwassen resident for nineteen

years, Flora is originally from Taiwan. Her tasks range from accounting to Human Resources. She spent twelve years working in Tilbury Industrial Park and retired after the company closed. Flora quickly got bored so began working downtown but was looking for something closer to home. Applying for the job at Canadian Tire she was pleasantly surprised to find the young management very impressive and respectful of someone older. They were very understanding and made her fit in with the younger generation. The teamwork and family attitude is very important to Flora. Josh Doyon-Hubert – Automotive Service Manager After some arm-twisting Josh came out west from Montreal with Jonathan and Maxim. They both like his work ethic, he too had worked his way up from stock boy. His love of cars initially kept him working for a dealership back home but the pull of being able to run the Automotive department was too strong and he came back to Canadian Tire. As with any new business, there have been ups and downs but overall the first year has been a good one. He enjoys the area but there is a definite difference between the inner city of Montreal and the suburban area of Tsawwassen. This is the first time he has worked at a store from dirt to shiny new opening and it was exciting. There are now two

technicians and four apprentices in the shop. One of the unique things they offer is inspection for out-of-province cars when people move here. He is adjusting to life outside the city but one thing is the same, the attitude of the management and staff at the store, “We are family and we care about the safety of your car,’ said Josh. Navpreet Kaur – Computer Operator Navpreet’s main tasks are of an administrative variety but she loves it most when she gets to work on the floor helping customers, “making our clients happy is a good feeling.” Her education is in Business Management and she has been with the store since the opening. She likes working with the team assembled at the store as her co-workers are fun to work with. Navpreet loves going to work and facing the new challenges each day brings. Lawrence Gounder – Technical Advisor Lawrence has been in the automotive industry for ten years but has had a passion for cars all his life. He joined Canadian Tire in December last year and has found the entire team, from owner on down, to be excellent. A life time North Delta resident, Lawrence played soccer in his youth. He likes helping people, and if he has to work a few hours after closing to get someone’s vehicle on the road he is willing to do so, “I like helping people.” And Lawrence has one request to the residents of South Delta, “Give us a chance, you won’t be disappointed.”
