One big, happy hockey family Owner Eduard Epshtein at helm of Delta Ice Hawks Every Tuesday night before fans start arriving at the Ladner Leisure Centre, Delta Ice Hawks owner Eduard Epshtein ensures his staff is well fed and well prepared for the night ahead. “We usually start with supper where everyone gets in the room,” he says. “We usually have Mario’s pizza and pasta and sometimes we have Chinese. For me, having great food is really important. I want volunteers to feel good being here and starting with a meal puts them all in a good mood.” Epshtein, who is in his second season as president of the Pacific Junior Hockey League franchise, says volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. “The team starts with volunteers. There are about two dozen volunteers who come to the rink every Tuesday no matter what else is happening in their lives,” he says. “We have a good group – some of them have been here since day one – so this is their 22nd season. They have been very loyal. This has become a second family to them. Without volunteers you can’t run this team. They are key. In order to be a success, you have to have many things in place, so having a good group of volunteers is one key.” He says the other keys to success are good coaching and talent on the ice. “Good coaches attract good players and help players to move onto higher levels. We have players who have a goal to make it to junior ‘A’ or to enjoy this level of hockey and have balance while they get their education.” Last season was an exceptional one for the Ice Hawks. They finished with the best record in the league and won the playoff title, only to lose in the final of the provincial championship – the Cyclone Taylor Cup – to the rival Richmond Sockeyes. Epshtein says the goal this season is to continue to strive to be the best. “We’ve had many players who have made the next move, so we have a younger group, but I’m confident we have the makings of another championship team. When you have a year where

you have players that move to a higher level, I also consider that a great success for the club.” Epshtein prides himself on being a hands-on owner and integrating the Ice Hawks into the community. “It’s very important and I’m very hands-on because it is so important to me. I’m involved in almost everything off the ice. I leave my coaches to do on-ice activities and development and I involve myself in everything else. Being involved with community groups is very important. When I came in I saw that as an opportunity to make the team better, so that means working with minor hockey, the skating club or anyone else.” Epshtein immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine 25 years ago. He started out doing labour jobs before enrolling at BCIT to study accounting. He then went to work at PricewaterhouseCoopers auditing with specialized mining companies. He’s been working in that industry since 2005. With his son Mark on the team, he got a chance to meet all the people involved and when an opportunity came to purchase the Hawks, the decision was easy. He was named the PJHL Executive of the Year in 2018. He also served as a director and sponsorship committee chair of Financial Executives International Vancouver Chapter since 2011, is on the board of Kerrisdale Little League and coaches in the Vancouver Minor Softball Association. “I’ve always been involved in everything that my children have been involved in,” he says. “That’s just what you do as a dad. And my wife too, I don’t think there is a day that goes by that we are not at a rink as all three are playing hockey.” He says he loves being the owner of the Ice Hawks. “I come from a small town in Ukraine, so hockey reminds me of that small town environment where we all know each other and help each other. That’s what attracts me to hockey. You might be in a large town, but when you get to the rink it feels like a small town and it feels like family. To me, hockey is family.”

Delta-based Ocean Trailer has a simple formula for success It’s all about family – even the employees. That’s how Ocean Trailer president Sid Keay sums up his philosophy, one that’s brought much success through tough times as well as good ones. Keay’s company, which gained a level of adulation for taking the bold move of setting up shop on a former landfill in Delta, was started by his dad Chuck back in 1981. Perseverance, unwavering friendships, customer loyalty and a reputation for treating people right were all integral factors in helping his trailer and container business grow across the country. “It’s a family affair, for sure. We run it but our employees are like family too,” says Keay. It all started when Chuck Keay began renting out highway trailers, with the family home in Burnaby acting as an office. The company has since grown significantly with locations not only on River Road in Delta but in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Nanaimo, Prince Rupert and Prince George. “My dad had worked for other companies in the trailer business and had the opportunity to go out on his own. As fate happened, the economy collapsed five minutes after that decision,” says Keay. “He started April Fools Day, 1981, and the economy collapsed by the summer. The sun finally came out of the recession by Expo 86. “When he started, I was taking a semester off school and going travelling, but dad couldn’t afford to pay anybody and he needed a hand, so I went down to help. I then didn’t go travelling until I was in my late 40s or early 50s,” laughs Keay. Keay and his brother Mike, who’s vice-president and runs the operation in Calgary, bought out their dad about 20 years ago. His oldest son Mack now manages the Winnipeg operation, his middle son Christopher handles things out of Prince Rupert, while nephew Jamie runs the shop in Nanaimo. The company has also enjoyed having many long-time employees, including family members who work at the various location. “Everyone’s like family. The number of people who have worked here their adult lives is pretty amazing. It’s interesting that I had an old visitor the other day who was one of our oldest customers. He’s 92-years-old and long since retired. Back in the early ’80s we wouldn’t have probably survived if it wasn’t for that guy. He was one of those people who were such great friends and customers. As you get older, those memories start to mean more to you,” says Keay. While his company has profit sharing, he notes attracting employees can be challenging, which is why Ocean Trailer has taken a different approach. “What built us was hiring young people and training them. What happened was when you put a profit program in place,

nobody wants to train these young people because it costs money. So, we don’t charge for their time. They hire a kid and their department pays zero, we won’t charge a nickel of their time in that department at the start, but then after a few months it’s a little, a graduated thing. Eventually, after a year or two years, their time is charged to that department,” Keay explains. “Our education and training fund is there so a branch won’t have their profit reduced. This way, with the bonuses in place, their profitability isn’t affected because who would want to spend any money training anybody? We train our own young people but we also have some really successful immigrant programs too. But that’s Canada, people coming from other parts of the world for an opportunity.” The location of the company’s headquarters in Delta has drawn Ocean Trailer much recognition. Four years ago, the City of Delta received national recognition for its Saving Our Industrial Lands (SOIL) initiative from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators, which recognized Delta’s vision to transform a wasteland of derelict landfill sites, known as the River Road East corridor, into an economically vibrant industrial area. Highlighting that effort, and the first project, was the remediation of the once infamous Delta Shake & Shingle landfill site. After a major fire in 1999, the landowner declared bankruptcy. This left the provincial government with a $4 million bill and Delta with an “orphan” brownfield site. In 2009, the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road provided an opportunity to use innovative engineering to transform most of the landfill to productive industrial use. Ocean Trailer, then a Coquitlam-based business that had an adjacent facility on River Road, assumed responsibility for the closure and clean up the landfill property. The company was given a break on development cost charges and property tax incentives. The multi-million-dollar eco-

B4 PEOPLE TO KNOW THE DELTA OPTIMIST OCTOBER 2018

industrial facility eventually opened there, bringing with it more than 150 jobs. “There’s risk to everything in life but, you know, they’re not insurmountable. We’ve bought ugly land before and made it nice. I call the other stuff ‘rich guy land’ and we’re just local boys who couldn’t buy that land, but we could buy ugly stuff and fix it ourselves.”

Best All-Around Newspaper

E

arlier this year the Delta Optimist was honoured as the best community newspaper in Canada winning Best All-Around Newspaper in its circulation category at the Canadian Community Newspaper annual awards. The Optimist also finished second for Best Front Page and third for Best Editorial page. Publisher Alvin Brouwer said, “All of us at the Optimist are delighted to win the highest award given in our industry, Best All-Around Newspaper in Canada. It’s a testament to our hardworking and dedicated staff and we are honoured to be chosen.” Optimist General Manager Dave Hamilton said being recognized as the best in anything is always great but when it comes from your peers across the country it truly is special. “The award from the CCNA for Best All-Around Newspaper goes to the entire team – from editorial to advertising sales, production to graphic design and administration to distribution – for the effort and hard work to produce a newspaper we can be proud to deliver to the readers in South Delta.” The awards celebrate the best in community publishing from across the country and are judged by a panel of industry experts in a range of categories covering editorial, photography, ad design and multimedia work. This award recognized work published in 2017.

Introducing the “People to Know” at the Optimist Alvin Brouwer

Ruth Van Bruksvoort (Gallinger)

Sandor Gyarmati

Alvin is the Publisher of the Delta Optimist and also President of Lower Mainland Publishing which is the parent company of the Delta Optimist and other community newspapers throughout the Lower Mainland. Alvin loves the community media business and has been involved in the business all of his life as he is the son of a community newspaper publisher. Alvin moved to Tsawwassen in 2012 and enjoys the lifestyle of South Delta. Alvin thinks the best part of being in the community media business is that every day is different and it also gives you an opportunity to meet many interesting people along the way.

Ruth has been with the Optimist sales team for over 20 years. She loves working with her clients to develop effective campaigns through the newspaper and our digital products that will increase traffic and helps her clients’ business grow. The opportunity to meet the business people of the community and build not only good working relationships but friendships as well is one of the reasons she enjoys her job.

Sandor has been a reporter with the Optimist for the past 14 years, writing about all aspects of Delta, from police, politics, historical features and more. He’s been a journalist for over 20 years and for most of that time has covered the unique community of Delta. He says it’s safe to say the people who live here are passionate about their community and follow their local news very closely, which makes the job even more rewarding.

Dave Hamilton

John is a member of the sales team and another long term employee. He enjoys working with his clients and presenting them with a variety of opportunities to help them increase their business. John has a great relationship with all of his clients. John says it speaks well of the Delta Optimist that over half of the employees have been there long term, over 20 years. He loves the fact that many of his clients are also friends.

Dave has been on the editorial staff as a reporter Optimist since 2005. He looked after the Lifestyle features when the Optimist plublished twice a week. His duties now include working on the Optimist website and social media channels. Being a part of the team here is what I like most about this job.

Linda Calendino

Ian Jacques

As Sales Co-ordinator Linda is the bridge between sales and the graphic department assisting the sales staff in getting their ads built and working with clients to get them approved. As strange as it may sound, “I think the best part of my job is the hustle and the under the gun pressure to get the ads done and to press on time. The busier I am the more on the ball I seem to be.” She also does a number of clerical and administration duties. Linda is in her 12th year at the Delta Optimist and enjoys the people she works with, the clients and South Delta itself.

Reporter Ian Jacques brought a wealth of experience when he joined the Optimist team two-and-a-half years ago. Ian had most recently been editor in Burnaby/New West and on the Sunshine Coast for a decade before that, so he’s well acquainted with the community news industry. At the Optimist, Ian covers a variety of beats, including police, city hall and Lifestyles. The avid sports fan likes the fact his job allows him to interact with a great many people in the community and he enjoys working alongside his fellow Optimist staffers.

Kali Andre

Katie Engellend

Kali is the Digital Sales Manager at the Delta Optimist. Her job is to work with our clients to grow their knowledge of digital marketing techniques and advise them on which strategies would work well for their business within our community. One of her favourite digital marketing tools to utilize is Social Media Advertising. She finds it to be an effective and informative tool to help local businesses grow their audience and sales. As a Delta resident she loves working with business owners within her community.

Katie has been the Delta Optimist Distribution Supervisor for the past two years. She’s usually the first person to greet anyone who comes into the office or gives the office a call. With over 150 newspaper carriers, Katie is responsible for making sure all South Delta residents receive their Delta Optimist every Thursday. Katie looks forward to hiring new carriers to the Carrier Team and getting to know all the families who do their part to deliver the Delta Optimist.

Mark Booth

Maggel Du Plessis

As Sports Editor Mark has been writing and providing photo coverage of teams, athletes and people who make a difference in our community for the past 31 years. He has always enjoyed the season-to-season aspect of sports and how it builds to a pinnacle then starts all over again a year later. Also watching young athletes evolve and take their careers to the provincial, national and sometimes professional levels.

Maggel has been a Zone Checker at the Delta Optimist for over two years. She processes vacation stops for residents and assists hiring new carriers. Maggel prepares the carrier and driver update sheets for each delivery day and enjoys rewarding the new Carrier of the Week and Feature Carrier. Plus she is used for holiday relief so Katie can enjoy her vacations in peace.

Dave is the General Manager and has been with the company that owns the Optimist, Glacier Media, for almost 30 years after spending a year and a half with the Optimist and its previous owners. Starting in the production department some 40 years ago Dave has worked in every area of a newspaper. The opportunity to work with the organizations and leaders in the community is what makes his job interesting. Working with a talented and dedicated team makes his role as GM much easier.
