Sunny Delta retains its small town charm in shadow of big city The City of Delta lies in the extreme southwestern corner of mainland Canada, bounded on the north by the Fraser River, the west by the Strait of Georgia, the south by Boundary Bay and the American border, and on the east by the City of Surrey. Historically a farming and fishing community, Delta became a bedroom suburb of Vancouver with the opening of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959, but still retains its small town charm and more relaxed atmosphere.
The city of just over 100,000 is divided into three main population centres: North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. North Delta is the most populated of the three and is situated in the upland area along the city’s northeast boundary with Surrey. Delta, which was incorporated in 1879, is the second largest city in terms of geography in Greater Vancouver, covering an area of 336 square kilometres. It has more hours of sunshine per year than any other community in the Lower Mainland. The city is known as a haven for birds and is home to the 340-hectare George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island. Delta is always near the top in the entire country in the annual Bird Count.
Delta is a focal point for transportation corridors between the major population centres in the region: Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle. The ferry terminal at the end of Highway 17 in Tsawwassen serves as the main gateway to Vancouver Island from the mainland. As well, Highway 99, the main freeway between Vancouver and the American border, passes through Delta.
LADNER The village of Ladner is situated on the south bank of the Fraser River and was the original centre of population in Delta. It remains home of city hall, the police station and Delta Hospital. Despite the recent growth, Ladner retains its village atmosphere with a quaint commercial core. There are also shopping malls along Ladner Trunk Road. Ladner offers much for the outdoors-type, with an expanded Millennium Trail, vast bird watching opportunities and a myriad of natural areas. It’s also home to a multitude of festivals and activities, including a May Days celebration that’s more than a century old and the Ladner Village Market, which brings thousands to town on Sundays in the summer.

TSAWWASSEN
POINT ROBERTS
Tsawwassen, including the neighbourhoods of Boundary Bay and Beach Grove, is located in the southwest corner of the city on what was once Roberts Island. Over the years silt from the Fraser River connected the island to the mainland and Roberts is now a point, not an island. It is named after the original First Nation settlers.
Immediately south of Tsawwassen is the geographical anomaly of Point Roberts, Washington. This area, while part of the continental United States, is only reachable by land through Canada via a border crossing at the foot of 56th Street. Point Roberts is a mainly rural enclave, where the majority of property owners are Canadians. It’s home to a large marina, an 18-hole golf course and Fourth of July celebrations.
Getting Here
Tsawwassen’s population consists primarily of families, although a growing number of seniors take advantage of its terrific weather and quieter lifestyle. The community, with its mild, sunny climate, is a gardener’s paradise. Tsawwassen’s residents have become known for being fiercely protective of their enviable quality of life. Centennial Beach, which forms part of Boundary Bay Regional Park, is noted for its warm water for swimming in summer.
The small resident population does not make for a quiet border crossing when the Canadian dollar is strong as lineups can be quite long as Canadians go down for bargains on those two indispensable liquids: gas and beer.
VEHICLE
FERRY
TRANSIT
POINT ROBERTS
Located south of the Fraser River, Delta is accessed by vehicles from the north either through the George Massey Tunnel or the Alex Fraser Bridge. Highway 99, the main thoroughfare from the U.S. border to Vancouver, runs through Delta, while Highway 17, also known as the South Fraser Perimeter Road, offers a link to the Trans-Canada Highway.
Situated at the western end of Highway 17, B.C. Ferries’ Tsawwassen terminal is the main port of entry for traffic to and from Vancouver Island. It is also the only access point from the mainland to the Gulf Islands. The majority of sailings are to Swartz Bay outside Victoria, but there are also sailings to Nanaimo on central Vancouver Island
Delta is served by several bus routes through the TransLink system, most of which link the community to the Canada Line’s Bridgeport Station in Richmond that offers frequent rapid transit service to downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport. Bus service is also available to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal.
At the foot of 56th Street in Tsawwassen sits an international border that leads to Point Roberts, Washington. The tiny American peninsula is only reachable by land through Canada via a crossing that typically has short wait times, although it can get quite busy when Canadians head south to fill up the tank or pick up a package.

SHOPPING Offerings range from quaint village to malls
MARKET BACK FOR 2020 The popular Ladner Village Market will look a little different this year. The market will open its 2020 season on Sunday, July 12 as a food-only venue with vendors along 48th Avenue. Visit ladnervillagemarket.com for details.
It’s safe to say the shopping experience in Ladner and Tsawwassen, including the Tsawwassen First Nation, runs the gamut. From Ladner Village’s small town charm to a destination shopping centre boasting 1.2-million square feet of retail space, the area is home to it all. Historic Ladner Village features many unique stores and restaurants in a quaint setting, while three nearby shopping plazas – Ladner Centre, Ladner Harbour Centre and Trenant Park Square – offer a wide variety of shops and services.
In Tsawwassen, the Town Centre Mall at the corner of 56th Street and 12th Avenue houses over 45 tenants and also plays host to many seasonal events in Rotary Square. At the same intersection you’ll also find Bayside Village and Tsawwassen Shopping Centre. The shopping landscape in these parts changed dramatically in 2016 when Tsawwassen Mills, a 200-store fashion mall, opened on TFN land near the ferry terminal. Across the street is Tsawwassen Commons, which is anchored by Walmart, Canadian Tire, Rona and others, and will feature approximately 100 outlets when build out is complete.

Millions of birds flock to Delta The Fraser River delta is an important part of the Pacific Flyway, a stopping point for more than five million migratory birds annually. As a result, Delta’s become a haven for bird watchers that continue to flock to a number of hot spots to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. Delta is a great place to view eagles, hawks and owls, and although you’ll see more of these magnificent raptors in the winter months, they grace the area year round. If the statuesque great blue heron is a favourite, there’s no shortage of
these graceful creatures along the Tsawwassen ferry causeway or at the edge of farm fields looking for food in irrigation ditches.
B I R D WAT C H I N G
Popular destinations for bird watchers include Reifel Sanctuary, a 300-hectare bird sanctuary on Westham Island; Burns Bog, one of Delta’s ecological treasures, the bog is situated between the Fraser River and Boundary Bay; Delta’s Regional Parks, Boundary Bay Regional Park is a hub of ornithological activity, particularly in spring, while Deas Island Regional Park, on the banks of the Fraser River in Ladner, has a number of picturesque walking trails and picnic spots.
