198 CAL VOICES FROM THE FRONT LINE EXHIBITION PRIVATE VIEW: 9th February 2018, 6:30pm - 9:30pm EXHIBITION: 12th February – 23 March 2018

About Voices From The Front Line Voices From The Front Line is a multimedia arts and heritage project engaging young people aged 13-25 from diverse backgrounds from our local Borough of Lambeth providing them with opportunities to learn new skills, be creative and investigate the heritage of their local area through archive visits, workshops, and creative activities. Voices from the Front Line explores an important aspect of Brixton’s heritage which is the political and social

history of Railton Road, known for being home to the Caribbean community in the post Windrush period and site of social uprisings in the 1980’s. Against a backdrop of increasing gentrification and social change the project aims to document the sites, personalities and events which have shaped the area. As part of the investigation into this once contested space, beyond, during and after the 1980s the project asks: ‘What characterises the spirit of Railton Road, and, what does the space now mean for people who visited and lived on the street?’ Dorette D. Lewin

PUBLICATION LAYOUT

With a basic spec given for the publication for the exhibition, I research what would be the best size for the publication. After researching other exhibition publications, I propose that the booklet should be A5 in size. All information (images and copy) was shared with me through the google drive. Dorette D. Lewin

12

PUBLICATION LAYOUT

Working within Adobe Indesign I have created a A5, two column template for the layout of the publication. The consistent element that will run through the publication will be the yellow line that represents yellow line road markings. Dorette D. Lewin

TIMELINE LAYOUT

I was also asked to design a timeline that represents the events that had happened on Railton Road over the years. I using images and copy that was shared with me on the google drive. I had the covert and resave all the images to CMYK in Adobe bridge Keeping in mind the budget and deadline for both the publication and timeline, we decided an separate handout would be cost effective. EXHIBITION INSTALLATION

I used Adobe InDesign to resize all the artwork from the timeline leaflet. I even measure the yellow lines outside to make sure the size of the lines was the same. Using the vinyl cutter I recreated the yellow lines, the timeline dates and background images. The information for each date was mounted on A4 foam board. Dorette D. Lewin

Dorette D. Lewin

To whom it may concern, It is with sincere pleasure that I write to thank Ms Dorette Lewin for her significant contribution to the year long, Voices From the Front Line project. Since the start of the work placement which began on December 10, 2017, Dorette has come out to support on the weekend community arts workshops, we delivered on as part of the Lambeth Heritage Festival. Dorette has demonstrated a grave ability to use her initiative by taking the lead with the conceptualisation, design, development and production of key project material and resources that captured and promoted the essence of the project. The publication which accompanies the project exhibition has been well received and highly praised for its effective layout. Over all Dorette has achieved the following outcomes to an extremely high standard; From concept to final artwork a publication was designed that captured the essence of the yearlong project. The publication accompanied the Voices From the Front Line Exhibition. From concept to final print, a pull-out supplementing the Railton Road Timeline was produced to accompany the publication as a separate handout. The sourcing and liaising with printers to get all artwork printed in time for exhibition and within budget was executed well. Played a key role as a member of the gallery curration and installation team throughout the installation of the exhibition. Recreate the printed timeline for the main exhibition wall. Participation on the project ended on the 9th of February 2018 with attendance to the exhibition launch and private view. Here Dorette gave a high level of support to our staff and youth arts participants. We have been honoured to have Dorette as part of our team and have no doubt she will be a valuable memeber of any team she joins in future and will be successful in her endeavours.
