FOUNDERS’ DAY MESSAGE 2000

The Millennium.... Not so much a time for change as a time to renew On this Founders’ Day, the 110th anniversary of our beloved Fraternity, let us take a moment to pause, reflect and be grateful that Delta Chi has not only survived all those years but continues to move forward. We have survived going to a single membership status while still a law fraternity, converting from a professional law fraternity to a social fraternity, two World Wars, the Great Depression, Korea, the demise of in loco parentis, Vietnam, the 1970s, the 1990s and even Y2K. Another, albeit minor, debate will soon be coming to a close. There has been some discussion as to whether the millennium began with the year 2000 or would begin with the year 2001. In approximately a month, no matter how you viewed this debate, we will most definitely be in the 21st century. There has been much discussion regarding the advances that will be made in many technological arenas, and Delta Chi will need to incorporate some of these in order to keep pace with the world and increase our visibility and services. Still, we must remain focused on our

primary purpose of assisting our members in their efforts to become the best that they can be. Past “AA” Greg Hauser, Michigan State ’75 put it best when he said, “We are called a social fraternity not because we go to parties but because we help prepare our members for life in society.” In northwestern Pennsylvania, where I reside, a campaign has started that is entitled, “Civility Counts”. This campaign is a return, or shall I say a more conscious effort, to treat others with consideration and to move manners back to the forefront. Now this might sound ridiculous to some, but take a few moments and think about how we as a society, along with our advances, have slipped in these areas. We have all heard and seen how the Greek system has been hit with media coverage due to some of our behaviors and societal changes. At one time in our history, Greek men were not only viewed as the leaders on their campuses but were also known for their manners, class and style. “Going Greek” was the thing to do.

So, along with the new changes that will occur this millennium, I propose that Delta Chi also incorporate a change taken from, or rather a return to, our rich past. Let’s be more civil in our interactions with others and make a more concentrated effort to display the manners, class and style that each of us already possess but, too often, fail to exhibit. I will start my efforts here and now, on a very personal level, with the underutilized phrase of “Thank You”. My first “Thank You” goes to Mrs. Steven Bossart. At our recent convention, Lorrie did a wonderful job of showing and telling those Delta Chi members present that displaying good manners may actually help you to advance and that having good manners and “class” is always in style. My biggest “Thank You” goes out to the many alumni, especially those serving as “BB”s (chapter advisors) and Alumni Board of Trustees members, for their countless hours of service to not only make our chapters stronger but their direct impact on the development of our undergraduate brothers. My last “Thank You” is to the 52nd International Con-

vention for re-electing me and allowing me to continue in the office of “AA”. You have changed and touched my life. I will lead and represent Delta Chi with the manners, class and style that it so rightfully deserves. As I close this message, I again ask that as we progress into the 21st century, with all its new developments and challenges that we not forget our past. I also ask that we return to being the true fraternal gentlemen we say we are. Let us be at the forefront of the effort to make “going Greek”, and specifically Delta Chi, an unquestionable decision. So Very Proud to Be Your Brother In The Bond,

Bill Williams, “AA”
