FROM THE βAAβ
On the cover: Delta Chi Fraternity celebrates 125 years of promoting friendship, developing character, advancing justice, and assisting in the acquisition of a sound education.
eflecting on 125 years of our existence, it is truly an amazing time to be a member of our beloved Fraternity.
reading this, YOU are the future alumni. YOU are the future leaders of this great fraternity. YOUR responsibility to Delta Chi has only just begun.
I remember being at the Centennial celebration a brief 25 years ago, and at that time, I never imagined 25 years later that I would be your 52nd βAAβ. What an incredible honor! The last 25 years have been an incredible and unforgettable fraternity experience for me. How many reading this right now were at the Centennial celebration? Undergraduates, take note that anyone attending the Centennial celebration has been actively involved since before most of you were born! This is what makes Delta Chi great! And in order to stay great, continued involvement and support from alumni is necessary.
I have a question for youβ¦ Who is the most important person in Delta Chi? It certainly is not me, or any member of the Board of Regents. It is not any Past βAAβ, member of the Order of the White Carnation, nor your chapter βAβ. It is the Associate Member.

As Founder Albert Sullard Barnes said, βDelta Chi is not a weekend or once a year affair, but a lifelong opportunity and privilege.β As brothers of Delta Chi, it is our obligation to support our Fraternity and the Educational Foundation in order to continue to grow and offer educational programs for our chapters. The social, business, and conflict resolution skills acquired during the undergraduate experience are invaluable strengths that truly prepare men for life after college. As alumni, we must stay committed and focused to continue to mentor, guide, and teach our undergraduate brothers as they navigate through all the challenges of college, the fraternity experience, and other challenges that life presents to them. Alumni support is critical for the future of Delta Chi, and to you undergraduates
These men are by far the most important individuals in Delta Chi. The Associate Members are the future of Delta Chi - they are the future leaders of your chapters and this Fraternity. How is this Fraternity supposed to survive if the associate members do not understand the meaning of promoting friendship, developing character, advancing justice, and assisting in the acquisition of a sound education? Our associate members will love and respect Delta Chi even more when our student members offer a fraternity experience full of value and lead by example. Hazing will not accomplish this, and in fact, it will lead to the total opposite. I was initiated in 1985 at The University of Massachusetts. Thirty years ago the culture was certainly different, but I will tell you this, I WAS NOT HAZED. I went through the new member program that was authorized by Headquarters and gained so much respect for Delta Chi that I vowed to stay involved the rest of my life. There is no room for hazing in Delta Chi, and I believe that hazing can and will kill some fraternities in the near future. I hope that Delta Chi is not a victim of this; this is a fate we can control. If we do not want to risk losing a chapter or the whole organization due to this harmful and hateful act, the answer is simple: do not do it. Offer the valuable fraternity experience that our Founders intended for our members. As noted in the Cornerstone, βBrotherhood is a two-way street. If you accept its advantages, you must live up to its obligations.β Please remember, being a Delta Chi is not an oath you take once, it is an oath you live everyday. In the Bond,
Miles Washburn 52nd βAAβ Massachusetts β87 New Founder | Life Loyal

Awards & Recognition
I
t is the Fraternityβs goal to recognize and promote the achievements of our chapters, colonies, alumni and advisors on a chapter, colony, regional and international level. The awards and recognition program allows chapters and colonies the opportunity to showcase their outstanding or improved performance over the past academic year in each of the Fraternityβs core competencies. Individual awards recognize the brothers and friends of Delta Chi for their outstanding service to the Fraternity in a variety of capacities. To be eligible for awards, chapters or colonies must be current on all bills to the Fraternity as of June 1 and must not be on any level of risk management sanction during the year of awards consideration. Once all applications are received, the Fraternity staff
objectively evaluates each and every application before recognizing the efforts of our chapters and colonies based upon Delta Chiβs eight core competencies for success: β’ Advising & Governance β’ Alumni Relations β’ Financial Management β’ Housing
β’ Involvement β’ Manpower β’ Membership Education β’ Scholarship
There are two categories of awards given for each core competency. The Excellence category denotes a complete mastery of that competency; winners in this category fulfill the many components of each area and often go above and beyond to reach new heights of operations. The Achievement category recognizes chapters and colonies that have made significant improvements in this area of operations.

LEADING THE CHARGE
Indiana Chapter The Indiana Chapter has taken their contributions to the next level by raising over $60,000 in 2015.
S
ince 2006, Delta Chi has worked hand in hand with The V Foundation for Cancer Research to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Research. Our chapters work tirelessly planning philanthropic fundraisers to play a part in Delta Chiβs contributions on an international scale. Recently, the Indiana Chapter has been leading the charge in taking their contributions to the next level, raising over $60,000 throughout 2015. This incredible feat is a testament to the dedication the Indiana chapter shows to The V Foundation on a yearly basis, continuing to break their previous records year after year. Each year, the Indiana chapter sets a goal that they would like to achieve in terms of dollars raised for the V Foundation. From there, they divide and conquer, fundraising in a variety of ways. In 2015 the grand total was raised primarily through their main event βMiss Greek IUβ. The event is a pageant style competition that brings together Greek women from the campus with a strong dedication to philanthropic causes, and those who serve as role models for the entire Greek system. Brothers typically take a large portion of the fundraising on themselves, collectively raising over $30,000 just from their own efforts throughout 2015, reaching out to family members, friends, and local businesses for donations. The women participating in the pageant raised $19,000 through their personal fundraising campaigns, and the remainder of the money raised came from smaller events hosted by the chapter, such as a corn hole tournament, Dine and Donate nights at local restaurants, and t-shirt and ticket sales for the event. Miss Greek IU, initially Founded by Jakson Alvarez, Indiana 2014, was planned by Matt Smith, Indiana 2017, in 2015, and the planning torch will be passed off to Conor Walker, Indiana 2017 in 2016. The chapter has already entered the planning stages of Miss Greek IU 2016, and is optimistic that they will once again shatter their previous record. Congratulations to the Indiana Chapter on setting the example when it comes to Delta Chiβs partnership with the V Foundation! 14

DELTA CHI EXPANSION
Behind the Scenes In recent years, fraternity expansion has grown into an industry of its own. The days of showing up on a campus, pinning a group of men, and letting them petition to become a chapter are over.
Each summer, the expansion staff researches over 400 campuses across North America, tracking graduation rates, the caliber of incoming students, growth trends, the health of the fraternity community on campus, and multiple other factors.
1 Once identified as a targeted campus for growth, a member of the expansion staff contacts the Fraternity & Sorority Life Advisor on that campus to assess the campus environment, note other organizations that are currently scheduled to expand on campus, and learn more about their expansion process.
F
raternities have had to adapt to campusesβ ever-growing barriers to expansion by placing a greater focus on relationship building, selling the organization through marketing and presentations, and developing programs to support and develop new colonies into healthy and sustainable chapters. Over the past year, the Delta Chi expansion staff has spent a lot of time and energy refining our growth strategy as an organization to stay current with todayβs environment, while looking ahead to the future. With this in mind, here is a look at Delta Chiβs expansion process. By Dustin Page Director of Fraternity Growth
2
If a campus supports OPEN EXPANSION or has opened for expansion, a letter will be sent from the Director of Fraternity Growth to the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL), notifying them of our intent to bring a new group to their campus.
If Delta Chi is invited to present, a member of the expansion staff will present to the campus community and share our values, membership programs, and plans for community involvement. Sometimes we have the opportunity to invite alumni to attend the presentation. This adds value and invitations will typically be sent out a few weeks in advance.

Typically, an expansion proposal is prepared and sent to IFC and OFSL, outlining the history of our organization, our values, and our expansion process. Each proposal highlights the added value of establishing a Delta Chi chapter on campus, and provides a detailed look at Delta Chi programs and leadership development.

The expansion staff will often times send out an electronic survey to all alumni living near a campus to gauge alumni interest. The information we collect helps our staff determine whether or not we would have enough support for an expansion and serves as a selling point to the campus. Please note that these surveys are often preliminary and accompany no guarantee that we will be able to expand at that campus based upon the results.

Once the expansion begins, three members of the expansion staff spend five weeks at the campus recruiting campus leaders who endorse and support the fraternal movement. After the Founding Father class is recruited, one member of the expansion staff will remain on campus for an additional six weeks to appoint and train officers, provide support throughout the Founding Father education period, and begin integrating the colony into the campus community. The Founding Fathers will all be initiated at the end of the expansion semester.
Following the expansion semester, the colony will work to meet our Colony Standards in order to Charter. Typically, this takes between 12-18 months following the expansion semester. Once the colony has met the Colony Standards, the Board of Regents will vote to charter the colony.
Occasionally, INTEREST GROUPS will contact the expansion staff and request to become a colony of Delta Chi. Unless the group is on a campus previously targeted for growth, and has the full support of the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, we will typically not endorse them.

CHARTERING ANNOUNCEMENT
Ferrum College
I
n the Fall of 2013, a group of men at Ferrum College assembled, deciding they wanted to create something new on campus. Located in rural Virginia, Ferrum did not have any national or international fraternities on campus. Wanting to break the mold of local organizations, the men sought out three international fraternities in hopes that one would colonize on campus. With the support of the Student Leadership and Engagement office, as well as the interest group, Delta Chi was selected to colonize and adopt the group of men who were eager to make a name for themselves. The Ferrum Colony of Delta Chi started off strong with a highly motivated group ready to better themselves as men, and learn what it means to be a Delta Chi. Chartering President, Max Harper, Ferrum 2016, claimed that the group faced many obstacles along the way, adding that among the most difficult was being a part of a very young Greek system, especially as the first international fraternity on campus. However, with the help of campus faculty and the hard work of the active brothers, they managed to establish a well respected name for the group. During their first year on campus, the colony raised over $2,000 for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, and committed themselves to diverse campus involvement, service, and making a community impact. The colony was overjoyed when the Board of Regents approved their petition to charter in the Fall of 2015. Shortly after the news broke, they began planning their chartering banquet to celebrate all of their hard work. The banquet was held at the Hotel Roanoke with over 60 guests in attendance including βAAβ, Miles Washburn, Massachusetts 1987; Region IX Regent, Dough Chananie, East Carolina 2007; former βCCβ and Order of the White Carnation Member, Keith Shriver, Florida 1979; Dustin Page, Delta Chi Director of Fraternity Growth, along with the friends and families of the active brothers and Founding Fathers. Max Harper, Ferrum 2016, remembers the chartering banquet as the culmination of the groupβs hard work paying off, through times where it sometimes seemed unachievable. The Chapter is looking forward to their future endeavors, and making Delta Chi better every day. Congratulations to the Ferrum Chapter on their achievements!

THE V FOUNDATION
Our Fight Against Cancer
D
elta Chi has been raising money for The V Foundation for Cancer Research for nearly nine years! As proud partners, we stand with them in the fight against cancer, by which we have all been affected in some way - whether personally, or through a friend or family member. Since 2006, Delta Chi has been raising the stakes in fundraising efforts to make a continuously growing impact on the cause. In 2012, the Fraternity set out to raise $250,000 by the 2014 International Convention, and in the process, raised over $300,000! By the 2016 Convention, the bar has been set to raise an additional $300,000 with 100% chapter/colony participation. During each Convention, the total money raised for the V Foundation is revealed. From there, the V Foundation turns around and issues a grant in Delta ChiΓ’€™s name for that amount. These very grants may one day lead to the cure for cancer. Keep up the outstanding efforts with your philanthropy projects and fundraising contributions for The V Foundation. 100% of money raised goes directly toward the fight to end cancer. By Philip Hagstotz Director of Fraternity Services
Looking for an idea for a philanthropy event? Delta Chi has teamed up with the V Foundation Staff to develop an event that can be implemented at any university in any area of the country. Each chapter has been provided with a program and resources needed to execute a VK. The VK is a 5k run that brings more than just the Greek community together; it utilizes the surrounding community as well, helping to generate more funds for the V Foundation. We hope that your chapter will consider planning a VK in the near future! If you would like more information, please contact Phil Hagstotz at Delta Chi Headquarters. 24
