Bank focuses on local, friendly, familiar Banking does not get any more “local, friendly, and familiar” than it does at National Exchange Bank & Trust. With offices throughout southeastern Wisconsin including Howards Grove, Chilton, Sheboygan Falls, Elkhart Lake, and Marytown, National Exchange Bank has been serving generations of families. “With National Exchange Bank & Trust, you don’t have to sacrifice service for innovative banking,” said Deb Geiger, Howards Grove operations manager. “We are local, friendly, and familiar.” In Howards Grove there are a number of bank employees who help to provide the full line of financial services that National Exchange Bank has to offer, including Geiger, Cheryl Klauck, Carol Knoener, Sierra Birr, Tracy Kracht, Diane Sabrowsky, Bob Maloney, and Sharleen Meinnert. “We invite our neighbors and friends to discover a community bank with all the products of a big bank and none of the hassle—24-hour ATMs, free online and mobile banking with mobile deposits, a personal financial management tool online and in the mobile app, locally serviced home loans, online loan applications, private banking, customized business loans and business banking solutions, trust and wealth management services, and full-service deposit products” Klauck said. Klauck added, “We look forward to more new convenience products being released later this year as well.” Based in Fond du Lac, National Exchange Bank & Trust has offices in multiple communities, yet all its customers continue to get the best in products and services. Tails wagging happily at HG business By Mark Sherry After years of tweaking, growing, and improving their facility just south of Howards Grove, Randy and Diana Schmidt seem to have their Happy Tails Pet Grooming & Boarding business just where they want it. “We’re just where we want to be,” Randy said as he provided a tour of the significant changes and improvements made in the past year. Happy Tails is just where its customers want it, too, as the trail of four-legged friends is brisk going in and out of the business at N7894 STH 42. As a matter of fact, customer demand has really guided the Schmidts in the changes they have made to the business over the past couple years. Happy Tails now has separate entrances for the boarding and grooming aspects of the business. Both sides of the business continue to do very well, but the grooming side has grown significantly over the past year-plus with the closing of some other area groomers and the wordof-mouth high marks which Happy Tails gets from its customers. Inside the grooming entrance to the business, the Schmidts have created a small waiting and reception area for grooming customers. The rest of that room which once housed a separate dog training business is now filled with grooming tables and equipment, another sign of how that side of the business has grown. Powering that additional equipment and keeping their regular furry guests comfortable in all kinds of weather was driving the electric bill pretty high at Happy Tails, so the Schmidts decided to do something about that as well. They had solar panels added to a portion of their roof, a project which was completed last December and which now provides about 75 percent of the power used by the business. Randy said he expects an eight-year payback on the solar panel investment. The investment is well worth it to keep their dog and cat guests comfortable at Happy Tails. Providing good homes for animals—short term or long term—has been a passion of the Schmidts for many years. The couple has established a special relationship with an organization known as Illinois Birddog Rescue. Do not be fooled by the name—many of this group’s dogs end up in Wisconsin, including a handful over the years in the Schmidt household. “I will forever be grateful for the day Randy and Diana Schmidt submitted an

application to adopt an older English setter from Illinois Birddog Rescue,” said Lisa Spakowski, Illinois Birddog Rescue founder and president. “Abby was about 7 years old and had lived a life of neglect and came into our program with Lyme disease and with a suspicious mass on her leg. Post-surgery, the biopsy revealed the tumor to be mast cell cancer—but for Randy it was love at first sight when he met her. Abby had a good long life at Happy Tails. She helped raise his new setter puppy Nigel and also helped make many new foster dogs feel safe in their home. Randy would often send me pictures of Abby snoozing on a dog bed in his office. “Some of the setters I sent his way for foster care had behavior issues, many had serious health issues, some needed hospice care,” Spakowski added. “I never had to worry when I sent Randy and Diana a special needs dog to foster knowing they would have the best care and TLC. When they decided to add one of these dogs to their family, it was the best feeling in the world.” Spakowski said, “With dog rescue, sometimes dogs only have days to find a place to move to before they are at risk for euthanasia. Over the years, Randy has made room for emergency dogs that just needed a safe place to stay until I could line up foster care. The IBR donation jar Randy set up in boarding and the donations he and Diana have sent from their grooming business for nail trims and butt squeezes has also helped the rescue enormously. We are very blessed to know such wonderful caring folks, and I could not have saved so many dogs without their amazing support.” Spakowski was referring to an ongoing program at Happy Tails in which customers can walk in without an appointment and for $12 have an “ala carte” item done on their pet, such as nails, a quick face trim, or expressing anal glands. That revenue is in turn donated to the Illinois Birddog Rescue. The Schmidts have helped another cause by employing a person from RCS Empowers, Inc. of Sheboygan, a nonprofit agency which helps youths and adults with disabilities. Andrew, the current RCS employee, helps with cleaning and other duties around the facility. Happy Tails Pet Grooming & Boarding has been at its current location since 2010 and employs about 10 people. Lindsay Wipperman is the most recent addition to the staff as kennel assistant, having started working at Happy Tails upon graduation from Kiel High School. With

Rehab efforts help cancer patients By Mike Mathes Cancer patients often face an uphill struggle in fighting their illness. An innovative approach to healing and health seeks to give them a fighting chance at maintaining their quality of life through the process. Ascension Calumet Hospital, in cooperation with Green Bay Oncology has turned its focus to a broad spectrum of services grouped under the heading of oncology rehabilitation. “We are fortunate to be able to take advantage of this partnership arrangement to be intentional about providing these rehabilitation services for oncology patients,” Patrick McGinnis, Manager of Rehabilitation Services for Ascension Calumet Hospital said. The attention to oncology rehabilitation is relatively new, with members of the Ascension Calumet rehabilitation staff undergoing training in the past few years. “We are excited to be in the forefront of this effort,” McGinnis said. “We are trying to help our patients maintain their quality of life through this. It’s a relatively new direction for rehabilitation services.” Tailored to individual needs Oncology rehabilitation efforts for each individual patient are tailored to their specific needs, and carried out in partnership with doctors that specialize in oncology and hematology. Green Bay Oncology, brings cancer fighting expertise to the partnership, as the region’s largest group of cancer specialists—bringing the world’s best new treatments to our patients in connection with Ascension Calumet Hospital. Dr. Anthony Jaslowski and Dr. Brad Heraly are both Green Bay Oncology providers who see patients through Ascension Calumet Hospital. Dr. Jaslowski, a fan of the new approach to oncology rehabilitation, said that great strides have been made in the past five years toward understanding the need for specific rehabilitation programs for cancer patients. “We are very fortunate that Ascension Calumet Hospital has gotten on board and made a significant investment in this kind of care earlier than most regional hospitals.” Dr. Jaslowski said that cancer often causes weakness, fatigue, weight loss and muscle wasting even before diagnosis. “This can make cancer treatment, which is often difficult, even harder for patients,” he said. “We have learned the hard way over the years that once people weaken beyond a certain point, cancer treatments can be more harmful than helpful. That’s why it’s critical that patients begin therapy to preserve and improve their strength sooner rather than later.” At Ascension Calumet Hospital rehabilitation specialists work with cancer patients through all stages of treatment helping them improve their quality of life and overall health. McGinnis said the focus of oncology rehabilitation is function. In addition to the challenges for cancer patients noted above, McGinnis also cited challenges of balance, gait, bed mobility, eating/swallowing and activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing and self-care. Each of these issues are identified as needs to be addressed through rehabilitation programs. “The effort is more of a marathon

A member of the Ascension Calumet Hospital rehabilitation staff works with an oncology patient to aid body function and strength through weight training.

than a sprint. Patients can expect a lot of education, motivation and coaching. They are active participants in the whole process,” McGinnis said. Patients can enter into oncology rehabilitation efforts in many ways, either via referral, or their own choice. In either case, oncology rehabilitation starts with an evaluation process. “We try to set appropriate goals to limit or eliminate acquired challenges. Most often this involves education for energy conservation, strengthening, dynamic and static balance activities, decreasing pain, increasing tolerance for activity and improving the quality of life,” McGinnis said. Sometimes the evaluations begin with a standard questionnaire. Nurses are able to refer patients through this method or casual observation. In some cases, the patient’s doctor will recognize the patient’s challenges, prompting a referral to rehabilitation efforts. Rehabilitation services for oncology patients can cross into many types of treatments. Among the most common are occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language pathology, lymphedema treatments, swallow studies, BIG and LOUD training, dry needling and cognitive assessments. Staff members at Ascension Calumet Hospital include those trained in many disciplines of therapy—four physical therapists, one occupational therapist an occupational assistant and a physical therapy assistant. “Everyone except our newest physical therapist has been through the oncology classes. We have a great staff and they are committed to these services for our patients,” McGinnis said. Ascension Calumet Hospital and its rehabilitation department work with patients from a large geographical area. “People live here and work/doctor outside the area, so we get referrals from a wide range of providers from outside our area,” McGinnis said. Rehabilitation services both conveniently located and readily available. The rehabilitation hours are Mondays through Fridays beginning at 6:30 a.m. through 8 p.m. Evening times are flexible depending on patient needs.

Familiar name, face joins Vogel team By Mark Sherry Familiar names and faces staff the sales offices adjacent to the showroom at Vogel Chevrolet in Kiel—which means Kevin Gutschow should fit in well. The 1997 graduate of Kiel High School began working at Lulloff Hardware in Kiel while he was still a high schooler and continued on there until seven years ago when he went to work for Sargento in Kiel as a line operator. Living and working in Kiel his entire life, Gutschow now brings that familiarity with the community and its people to Vogel Chevrolet as its newest salesperson. Kelly Johnson has been a fixture in sales at Vogel for several decades, and Ed Hartmann is a veteran of the sales team as well. Gutschow is currently occupying Johnson’s office while Johnson is on leave. “We’re eager to have him,” Tara Vogel said of the addition of Gutschow to the staff. “I’m glad he knows people.” Gutschow agreed that his familiarity with Kiel area residents is a great starting point for his new career in automotive sales. “A lot of people know me,” he said, referring back to his years of helping customers at Lulloff Hardware. He said he also enjoyed his years of working at Sargento, but when he saw the help wanted ad published by Vogel Chevrolet he decided to have a talk with Mike Kevin Gutschow stands next to a new Chevrolet Silverado in the showroom of Vogel Chevrolet in Kiel.
