Home fires burning faster, NFPA reports Today’s home fires burn faster than ever, making escape planning all the more critical to home fire safety. Studies show that in the past, people had approximately 17 minutes to escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Now they may have as little as two minutes to get out safely. With these concerns in mind, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape™!” as the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Oct. 6-12. Working to better educate the public about the importance of home

escape planning and practice, the theme recognizes the potentially heroic impact of everyday people who put these messages into action. “Home escape planning and practice may seem so basic that it’s not even necessary, but in reality, these efforts can have tremendous impact,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of outreach and advocacy. “We’ve seen time and again that advance planning can make a potentially life-saving difference in a fire situation.” NFPA statistics show that the number of reported U.S. home fires in 2018 is half that reported in 1980; however, the

death rate per 1,000 reported fires has remained fairly steady, reflecting the continued challenges of safely escaping today’s home fires. While home is the place people are at greatest risk to fire—approximately 80 percent of all U.S. fire deaths occur in homes—people tend to underestimate their risk. That over-confidence lends itself to a complacency toward home escape planning and practice. “Most people don’t recognize the true value of home escape planning until they’ve experienced a home fire, and

Here are the top causes of residential fires in the U.S. during 2017: 1. Cooking—51.6 percent 2. Heating—9.1 percent 3. Unintentional, careless—7.1 percent 4. Electrical malfunction—6.5 percent 5. Open flame—4.3 percent 6. Intentional—4.2 percent 7. Other heat—3.3 percent 8. Appliances—3.1 percent 9. Smoking—2.1 percent 10. Equipment malfunction—2.1 percent

home. Home escape plans should be practiced twice a year by all members of the household. Tips given for purchasing fire extinguisher The first step in deciding which fire extinguisher to purchase is to look at the label on it to determine its class. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and UL created three Classes of Fires—A, B, and C. These letters are shown on the label of the fire extinguisher to indicate that it has been tested and found to be effective on those classes of fire. n Class A: Fires that involve common combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, trash, and plastics. n Class B: Fires that involve solvents, oil, gasoline, paints, lacquers, and other oil-based products. n Class C: Fires that involve energized electrical equipment. Fire extinguisher rating The next step is to look at ratings. The numbers 1 to 10 before the letter A represents the rating for that A capability; the higher the number, the larger A class fire the unit can handle. The numbers 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 before the letter B repre-

Types of fire extinguishers There are five different types of fire extinguishers, according to Kidde: n Water—Absorbs the heat and cools the burning material. n Dry chemical—Smothers the fuel (preventing vapors from igniting) and interrupts the chemical chain reaction. n CO2—Removes the oxygen from the fire. n Halotron—Interrupts the chemical chain reaction. n Wet chemical—Smothers and seals the fuel (preventing vapors from igniting) and removes the heat by cooling. Do fire extinguishers expire? Rechargeable fire extinguishers—According to National Fire Protection As-

sociation (NFPA) standards, rechargeable fire extinguishers must be recharged every 10 years. A rechargeable fire extinguisher has a metal head and a gauge that reads “Charge/Recharge.” Check the fire extinguisher’s gauge monthly to verify that the fire extinguisher is still charged. If the extinguisher’s gauge needle is in the Recharge area, have the fire extinguisher recharged immediately. For more information about a specific fire extinguisher, refer to the user’s manual. Disposable fire extinguishers—According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, disposable fire extinguishers must be replaced every 12 years. A disposable fire extinguisher has a plastic head and a gauge that reads “Full/Empty.” Check the fire extinguisher’s gauge monthly to verify that the fire extinguisher is still full. Fire safety standards set for energy storage systems To help provide answers to different stakeholders interested in energy storage system (ESS) technologies, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems, the first comprehensive collection of criteria for the fire protection of ESS installations. The standard provides requirements based on the technology used in ESS, the setting where the technology is being installed, the size and separation of ESS installations, and the fire suppression and

control systems that are in place. According to industry expert Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewable, global deployment of ESS will expand 13 times in size over the next six years (2018 to 2024), with the greatest growth occurring in the U.S. and China. Certain ESS technologies can pack a lot of energy in a small envelope, which makes these technologies useful but also increases fire and life safety hazards such as the release of toxic/flammable gases, stranded energy, and increased fire intensity. These potential threats are driving the

need for first responders and those who design, build, maintain, and inspect facilities to become educated and proactive about ESS safety. “NFPA 855 is the culmination of several years of extensive consideration and dialogue at technical committee meetings, educational sessions, and workshops attended by a broad spectrum of professionals,” said Christian Dubay, P.E., vice president and chief engineer. “Understanding how to safely use ESS is important to many different segments that NFPA serves—designers, engineers,

builders, manufacturers, enforcers, responders, and policy makers.” “While energy storage systems provide countless benefits and applications, the technologies do not come without risk. NFPA 855 aims to mitigate risk and ensure that all installations are done in a way that takes fire and life safety into consideration,” said Brian O’Connor, P.E., NFPA staff liaison for NFPA 855. NFPA 855 considers the ventilation, detection, signage, listings, and emergency operations associated with ESS.

The National Fire Protection Association offers the following tips for escaping a home fire: n A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. n Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound. n According to an NFPA survey, only one of every three American households

have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. n While 71 percent of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, only 47 percent of those have practiced it. n One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least six minutes before a fire in their home would become lifethreatening. The time available is often less, and only 8 percent said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out.

Fire safety important part of life on farm

Mrs. O’Leary’s cow may have gotten a bad rap but the folktale reminds people that fire safety is an important part of farm life. People, animals, and property are in danger when fire breaks out on the farm. Inspect your barn and outbuildings for fire hazards to reduce the risk of tragic loss. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests the following actions for farmers: n Heat lamps and space heaters are kept a safe distance from anything that can burn. n Heaters are on a sturdy surface and cannot fall over. n Electrical equipment is labeled for agricultural or commercial use.

n All wiring is free from damage. n Extension cords are not used in the barn. n Lightbulbs have covers to protect them from dust, moisture, and breakage. n Damage is identified quickly and repairs are completed with safety in mind. n Dust and cobwebs around electrical outlets and lights are removed. n Oily rags are stored in a closed, metal container away from heat. n Feed, hay, straw, and flammable liquids are stored away from the main barn. n The barn is a smoke-free zone. n Exits are clearly marked and pathways are clear. n Fire drills are held frequently with everyone who uses the barn. n Workers are trained to use fire ex-

tinguishers. n Everyone in the barn knows personal safety is the first priority if a fire breaks out. n Hazard checks take place on a set schedule. The following safety equipment may be required by local building codes and will help protect barns. Install and maintain: n ABC-type fire extinguishers near every exit and within 50 feet from any point in the barn. n Fire alarm system n Sprinkler system n Carbon monoxide detection system Talk with local fire departments to address safety concerns unique to each farm.

Let’s all help to prevent fires. You can start by talking with grownups in your family about fire safety and prevention. Check at your school to see if firefighters can come to talk to your class. Cut out this checklist and hang it on your refrigerator or bulletin board. Read these clues to fill in the puzzle with people and the things they use to fight fires:

Cook in the kitchen only when an adult is helping you.

Do you know that some dogs live in fire stations?

Don’t touch matches, lighters or candles. They are only for adults to use. Do you have smoke detectors on every level of your home? Test them monthly. Change the batteries at least once a year. Do you know two or more ways out of the house? Never use elevators if there is a fire (stairs are much safer). Smoke rises. If there is a fire, stay low: crawl under the smoke. Have you picked a place to meet the rest of your family once you are all out of the house? Once you are out of the house, stay out of the house.

Halloween decorations can pose fire safety risks Children love the costumes, treats, and friendly frights of Halloween parties and going door to door. These can be safe and fun activities for all of us, even younger children. But area firefighters want parents to know that flames can quickly ruin Halloween festivities. You can keep your child safe from fire and burn injuries by following these tips: n Children are naturally drawn to glowing jack-o’-lanterns and other flickering lights. Instead of flames, use battery-powered candles or flashlights to decorate. Lit candle flames can burn children. If children come too close to the flame, their clothing can catch on fire.
