happiness.
any people have the goal of living a good, long life—full of health and
God willing, people who accomplish that goal very likely will need the assistance of other people at some point. That assistance could be in the form of senior apartments, assisted living, or a nursing facility. Thankfully, northeast Wisconsin is blessed to have numerous great facilities in all three of those categories along with numerous other services which support the senior population. Following is a little information about some of those facilities in the Verve area which take such great care of the elderly.
Felician Village Felician Village is a senior life plan community in Manitowoc with a full continuum of care and is sponsored by the Felician Sisters. Felician Village started with the founding of St. Mary’s Nursing Home in 1887 by the Felician Sisters. Originally the home cared for the orphans and aged in the Manitowoc community. In 1934 it was decided that St. Mary’s Home would only care for the aged. Since 1988, senior independent living, two forms of assisted living, and a rehabilitation unit as well as St. Mary’s Nursing Home are now part of Felician Village. Seniors looking to live in a community with a continuum of care and a host of amenities will find Felician Village to be what they are seeking. The 22-acre campus situated in the heart of Manitowoc offers
not only housing options but a wide variety of activities and events with something for everyone. Amenities include three restaurants on campus, a salon, massage therapy, a chapel with Catholic Mass daily as well as other faith services, and a health clinic. The Dementia Center of Excellence offers help and care to those who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Two SNOEZELEN® Sensory rooms on campus help comfort those affected by dementia. The newest offering is the Lakeshore Memory Clinic, a partnership developed with Holy Family Memorial and the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute. The professionals at this clinic provide evaluation, diagnosis, education, and management to help ease the challenges of living with dementia. Walkways connect all the buildings

“After working many years for larger companies, I had the opportunity to open Harvest Home Assisted Living which has been in existence since 2005,” Pahmeier said. “The need for quality care for people suffering with dementia has really come to the forefront. With that in mind, I am now a certified dementia practitioner and certified Alzheimer’s disease and dementia practitioner trainer through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. “As a health care provider, I believe it is my duty to remain current in the latest information in my field of long-term care, with an emphasis on dementia and nutrition. “Our goal at Harvest Home is to provide quality care for the people who live here as well as provide a positive work place for all who work at Harvest Home,” Pahmeier added. “I am blessed to have a super administrative team as well as caregivers who hold to Harvest Home’s high standards of practice. Our goal at Harvest Home is that all of our residents have the opportunity to live with purpose and grace. “Personally, I am blessed with a supportive husband and business partner (Fred), our five grown children with wonderful spouses, and many grandchildren,” she added. “Without the support of family and awesome staff—and truly God’s blessings—Harvest Home would not be what it is today.”
Maritime Gardens Assisted Living Manitowoc County’s Maritime Gardens Assisted Living is nearing its fifth anniversary. Owners and Kiel residents Jerry and Karen Vandermause said they are pleased to say they are “Caring for the Heart and Soul” of their residents, a mission statement of Maritime Gardens since it opened in May 2014. The Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF) features 22 single suites and two double suites, all of which have a private, handicap-accessible bathroom and shower. The facility serves individuals with dementia/Alzheimer’s disease, physical disabilities, advanced aged, and
terminal illnesses. In addition to “Caring for the Heart and Soul,” the Vandermauses add a promise to offer tender loving care, something they said they believe someone should experience every day; a pursuit to give their residents a reason to get up; and a purpose to promote each resident’s innate beauty, independence, health, and safety in a warm, home-like setting. “Our tender loving care is fulfilled by all of our employees working as a team and together seeing our residents as family,” Jerry said. “We have a fulltime, on-site nurse, Judy Augustine, who came to our facility with 25 years of geriatric and dementia

Church services of all denominations, educational presentations, live entertainment, holiday and birthday celebrations, and outings are appreciated by the residents as well as their families who attend activities and events with them. “Our facility is a very inviting, home-like setting where meals are homecooked. Our dining room overlooks a garden which is secured and includes a covered porch for residents to enjoy during the warmer months. A spa room with a therapeutic tub and an in-house barber and beauty shop allows our residents to enjoy the pleasure of being treated in a special manner. Crime shows led Xiong to career Paris Xiong, a Kiel resident and 2016 Lakeshore Technical College Paralegal program graduate, credits her early interest in law to her sisters who watched a lot of crime shows on television, and her high school civics teacher who assigned her the role of district attorney on the school’s mock trial team. “I’m a huge ‘Law & Order’ fan, and I loved watching how the district attorneys would help people,” Paris said. “I followed how they argued by sharing facts. I knew I was good at that and wanted to help people, so a career in law was going to be a great fit for me.” The vision Paris had for her law career led her to attend a large, outof-state university after graduating from Appleton North High School. “I realized rather quickly that the big school mentality, large classes where the instructors didn’t know me, was not for me,” she said. Paris decided to take a break. She moved to the Sheboygan area where her fiancé was from, got married, started a family, and then found herself wanting to get her education back on track. She found LTC’s Paralegal program to be a great stepping stone into law since paralegals do much of the work in a law office. She began taking night classes in the fall of 2014. Paris learned how important time management was as she filled the roles of mother, wife, part-time employee, and student. While juggling her multiple roles, she still found it important to get involved at LTC. She joined the Paralegal Student Association as vice president. It turned out to be a straight path to serving as president the following year. “I have so many good memories because the entire program is amazing,” Paris said. “The teachers, especially Mr. Opie, are so helpful and understanding.” Paris enjoyed learning

about law, all the detail work, reading Supreme Court cases, and the handson practice of filling forms out—over and over—to ensure students were truly ready for the work. “Students like Paris are what makes being a teacher a great job. She was on a mission when she started the program, soaking up the law and thinking about how it applied to real life,” said Richard Opie, LTC Paralegal Program coordinator/instructor and lawyer. Working in the legal field was not far off for Paris. During her second
semester, a classmate mentioned a law firm was looking for a receptionist. She applied and landed her first position in the legal field, giving her good insight into how a law office operates. Not long after that she started her internship, required by LTC for all Paralegal students, and it went very well. So well, in fact, that Bay Title & Abstract in Manitowoc wanted her to stay on and offered her a position as a searcher. Paris quickly advanced and is currently a closing agent at Bay Title’s Brillion office. During her internship, Paris was

already preparing for her next step on her education path. An instructor shared an example of an LTC Paralegal graduate who went on to get his bachelor’s degree. That prompted Paris to keep her education plan moving forward. She started at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay a month after she graduated from LTC, double majoring in Integrative Leadership Skills and Psychology. Having her LTC associate degree allowed her to graduate from UWGB in only a year and a half, in December 2017.
job just about anywhere. She enjoys working in a smaller community. “I like knowing people at the courthouse by name, and I’m able to build better relationships than I could in a big city. Living in Kiel also keeps us close to our families, and this area is a great place to raise kids,” Paris said. In addition, she finds being fluent in both English and Hmong very helpful because of the larger Hmong populations in the Sheboygan and Fox Valley areas, with many elders who do not understand the law.
“Paris was a leader in and out of the classroom, and took advantage of much of what LTC has to offer beyond academics. She then went on to earn her bachelor’s degree and may well end up being an attorney. Quite the journey,” Opie added.
“I’d encourage anyone interested in a career in law to consider becoming a paralegal, and to look at LTC’s program. There’s no harm in trying. There is so much variety each day, and there are lots of places to work—from huge corporations to title companies,” Paris said.
As a paralegal, especially one with experience, Paris could likely find a
dream of being a district attorney. She said she is confident that someday— which she says will be after her husband graduates from LTC’s Supply Chain Management program and their two sons are a little older—she will become that district attorney. She is currently taking steps to prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and has started visiting law schools. “Growing up, you think you have your life planned out. I’m a big advocate of ‘life happens,’ and I’m proof of that,” Paris said. She is indeed. Having a vision for one’s life is useful for moving forward, though many may find like Paris did that the path may not always move along as expected. And an unanticipated turn can still lead to a very fulfilling career and family life.
Paris continues holding on to her

Tri-City Nights—a family-focused celebration—is set to be held every Friday afternoon and early evening starting in June and representatives of donor organizations gathered last week at Honeymoon Acres in New Holstein where the event will be held. Donors include (front, from left) Mary Daun of Compeer Financial in Chilton, organizer Allison McShaw of Honeymoon Acres, Sonny Schaar representing the New Holstein Area Chamber of Commerce, and Paula Pethan of New Holstein Utilities; and (back) Erica Boll of Erica Boll Insurance, Tina Zieball and Marcia Franzen of G&H Trucking & Excavating, Mark Sherry representing the New Holstein Economic Development Corporation, and Brad Grant representing Premier Financial Credit Union. I
t is “all systems go” for Tri-City Nights, a familyfocused party every Friday in New Holstein starting Friday, June 7 and running through Sept. 27. Tri-City Nights will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. each of those Fridays in the parking lot of the former Gruett’s Implement building along STH 32/57. Joe and Marci McShaw of Honeymoon Acres now own the lot and accompanying building and are donating the use of the property for these events, but Honeymoon Acres is not the sponsor of Tri-City Nights. Daughter-in-law Allison McShaw said the vision is to bring the communities of New Holstein, Chilton, and Kiel—as well as visitors from many other places—together on Friday evenings for family fun, much like Friday evening “Pizza on the Farm” events did in the area in the past. Allison said the events will be alcohol-free but will feature food trucks each night from the Fox Cities, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, and elsewhere. Area restaurants would be welcome to set up food stands as well if they wish. Allison—who used to work in the food truck industry— said some unusual fare is being lined up including Ethiopian and Caribbean, along with more standard fare. Bands also are being lined up already, with bluegrass band Red Star Express and country singer Mark Weyker among the
musical acts which have signed on, she said. The grounds also will be open to any and all vendors and—in a somewhat unusual step for such events—there will not be any charge for
vendors to set up booths, nor is there any cover charge for people to attend the event. Picnic tables will be set up on the grounds for people to enjoy their food and music.
Local community groups also are being arranged to provide entertainment for children. Allison said she is hoping service clubs and other organizations from all three communities can

work together to conduct the children’s activities on a given night. Allison said she and her planning committee—which includes husband Dwight, Falena McShaw, and Casey Suttner—understand that this is a big undertaking, but they are getting strong support from the communities and have a strong lineup of activities ready to go. Allison said they chose to hold the event every Friday—rain or shine and even if other community events are happening—so that people do not have to try to figure out “whether or not this is a Tri-City Night.” She also said they believe Tri-City Nights will only serve to bring more people to the area who will
patronize other events and businesses. Businesses and organizations have stepped up to donate money to make Tri-City Nights happen. Allison originally said they were targeting between $20,000 and $30,000 as they expect each night to cost between $1,000 and $2,000. Food trucks are being guaranteed a minimum revenue take for each evening in order for them to come to the new event. If a truck falls short of the minimum mark it will be supplemented by funds from Tri-City Nights. The musical performers also come at a cost, Allison said. “We are a nonprofit that is putting on Tri-City Nights and are not looking to make

any money on this event,” board members state in an explanation letter about the events. “At the end of the year, if there is a surplus of money, it will roll over to the next year for the event.” Insurance, legal fees, signage, and advertising also are being paid for by the Tri-City Nights group. Businesses and/or organizations which donate will receive a sign stating their business is sponsoring the evening, a vendor space to set up promotional/ informational items about their business, a paragraph telling about the business in a brochure which will be produced, and their donation may be able to be a tax write-off.
Lesser donations of any amount—including from individuals in the community—are welcome as well. Any donation also will get the donor on a sign, a paragraph in the brochure, and the possibility of a tax write-off as well. Allison also said the board is welcoming businesses to provide their services in lieu of a donation and they also will receive the same benefits. Groups sponsoring children’s activities will be given a 15 foot by 20 foot vendor space for activities such as face painting, or a larger grassy area for activities such as an obstacle course. The activities will be free although groups will be

Exercise Benefits Both Physical & Mental
I
f you’re interested in becoming smarter, you don’t really have to invest in the many vitamins, herbs, and “cognitive training” software programs and seminars you see advertised on TV or on the Internet. All you have to do is go for a long walk three times a week.
That’s the message of more and more research published recently. One study is a review of research conducted to determine the relationship between regular exercise and improved cognitive functioning. It included tests performed on children, young adults, and older adults. The findings show that regular aerobic exercise (as little as briskly walking for an hour three times a week) can not only add years to your lifespan, it can significantly improve your brain functioning. The study provides strong evidence of exerciserelated improvements in a variety of activities, including task switching, selective attention, inhibition of inappropriate responses, working memory capacity, and the ability to learn new things.
20
| SUMMER 2019
The benefits of exercise are both physical and mental. Populations throughout the industrialized world are becoming increasingly sedentary as a result of the changing nature of work and leisure activities. As a result of these societal changes...diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers are increasing. Physical activity serves to reduce susceptibility to these diseases, obviously, and increased physical activity also has direct and relatively rapid effects on cognitive ability and brain health. Another study studied people’s cognition, resting brain blood flow, and cardiovascular fitness, measuring their levels during and after a six-week period of aerobic training. The blood flow measurements allowed the researchers to see which areas of the brain were changing and improving as a result of the exercise. Lead author of the study Sandra Bond Chapman, founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth, says, “This research shows the tremendous benefit of aerobic exercise on a
person’s memory and demonstrates that aerobic exercise can reduce both the biological and cognitive consequences of aging.” Dr. Chapman expands upon these findings, emphasizing their importance to the public: “Physical exercise may be one of the most beneficial and cost-effective therapies widely available to everyone to elevate memory performance. These findings should motivate adults of all ages to start exercising aerobically.” Considering the average adult spends the equivalent of 49 days out of the year in front of a screen--their phone, computer, or television--it is no wonder that we are seeing health issues and mental/emotional disorders on the rise. So take heed, and take to your feet. Whatever your age, adding regular aerobic exercise to your life three times a week can significantly improve your physical health—and it may make you smarter at the same time.

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Living as close as we do to a Great Lake, we often take it for granted. Although I don’t have any desire to be on the Lake, I love to look at it and be awed by its beauty, and ability to have an impact on our lives and weather, as the seasons change. The upcoming warmer months provide many days to enjoy Lake Michigan and its shoreline. Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes and the only one of the five lakes entirely located within the United Sates. It is 307 miles long and 118 miles wide. The name Michigan is derived from the Ojibwa Indian word mishigami, meaning larger lake. Four lighthouses stand along the Lake Michigan shoreline, which are always interesting to visit. Because we love to be near the lake, we have visited Kohler Andre State Park many times. You can buy a State Park entrance sticker for the year or just for a day. Located just 2+ miles from the City of Sheboygan, you can hike through the sand dunes on miles of golden beach. The park has 137 campsites. The park

is open year- round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and even has campsites that are kept cleared of snow in winter. Lion’s Den Nature Preserve, located on Lake Shore Drive in Grafton (I-43 to the Highway 60 exit, east to Lake Shore Drive), offers beautifully groomed trails, boardwalks and paths. One of the trails leads to a huge wooden staircase that takes you down the side of a huge bluff, to the lake and sandy beach below. A place to get lost; to enjoy a book, have a picnic or comb the beach for treasure, or just go for the “million dollar views” of the lake, from the bluffs. Traveling north on County LS in Cleveland, you will find Fisherman’s Creek. Close to the road, but easy to miss, if you aren’t watching closely. From the parking lot, follow the trail that will take you to the beach. The day we visited this park, the sun was shining and other than fog on the lake, it looked like a beautiful day. By the time we started to walk back to our vehicle, we heard thunder and a short time later it was raining and rained hard, all the way to Sheboygan, which is not far from Cleveland. A little more undeveloped, but still beautiful views, and a beach to take a walk. Taking a day trip and enjoying the lake at any one of these locations, could make for a perfect summer day. She is currently working as a hospice nurse in addition to operating her permanent cosmetic business. “I had my permanent eyeliner done in 1993 and later tattooed my eyebrows. I knew from my own experience what a convenience tattooed makeup is,” she said. “Many
women have difficulty keeping their eyeliner in place due to allergies or other reasons and tattooed eyeliner is the perfect solution. I also began to realize that many women were losing their brows due to the aging process, overplucking, and various other reasons.” Heidi works with each client individually to assess their bone structure and coloration, then collaborates with them regarding shaping of eyeliner or brows as well as colors which would be most complementary to their skin tones. Asked where she sees her business heading in the years ahead, Heidi said, “Permanent cosmetics have become increasingly popular as more and more people become aware that this service exists and can see for themselves how
natural it looks. I foresee my business continuing to grow in the years to come.” She said customers are ecstatic with the work she does. “Permanent makeup provides an easy, longterm solution for makeup application for those with a busy lifestyle and for those who simply have difficulty neatly applying their makeup. No more smudged or disappearing makeup. No more crooked eyeliner or mismatched eyebrows.”

Readings by Monica See What’s In Store For You!
SHEBOYGAN - Monica Stevens has been a psychic for many years. She has set up her psychic business, “Readings by Monica,” in her home, 1523 Colorado Ct., Sheboygan (Corner of Business Dr. and Colorado Ct., just north of Union Ave.). Stevens noted that she inherited her gift of extrasensory perception (ESP) communications or perception outside of normal sensory activity - from her grandmother, the late Mary Woods. As a clairvoyant, Stevens has the ability to communicate with spirits. Stevens believes everyone has some psychic power. “Everybody has energies and abilities,” she said, “premonitions, dreams, inner feelings. Mine are just more in-depth. I can pick up and tune in on directions in others’ lives.” Stevens derives her greatest job satisfaction through helping clients achieve positive changes in their lives.
Stevens’ work presents its share of challenges too. “My greatest challenge is working with people who are very depressed,” she said. “But I tell clients exactly what is going on.” Her customers basically are people looking for information about themselves and their future. Stevens performs psychic readings of the clients present and future. She offers: astrology readings, tarot card readings, palm readings. “I give never-falling advice on all matters of life such as love, courage, marriage, divorce and business transactions,” Stevens said. “I will lift clients out of sorrow and trouble and start them on the path of happiness and prosperity. There is no heart so sad and dreary that I cannot bring sunshine into it. All my readings are treated with complete privacy and confidentiality,” she stressed. “I am available for house calls and parties too.”
Clients interact with her for about an hour in her office. She also provides palm, tarot card, crystal and sand readings, which take about 20 minutes. The most popular are psychic and tarot card readings. Stevens, who was raised Roman Catholic and still believes in the church’s tenets, said psychic abilities can mesh with traditional religious beliefs. The Bible in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 refers to the gift of prophecy as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Has Stevens been blessed with this gift? She invites readers to determine that for themselves by calling on her for a reading. “A lot of clients are nonbelievers when they come in here,” Stevens said. “When they walk out, the are believers.”

I have fond memories of picking a flavor birthday cake each year for my birthday and enjoying my mom’s homemade creation.” After finishing her bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, Silberzahn became more and more aware of the importance of food and how it impacted her health. I saw amazing changes in my health and my family including reduced medication for my dad and a clear cancer diagnoses for my mom. I was really convinced that this was something I needed to share. “To this day, my own two kiddos are grain-free and follow a Paleo-Based diet. I love making them treats for their birthdays and other special occasions that I can feel good about and know that they won’t make them feel ‘yucky’—even my baby who is allergic to eggs can enjoy cake and cookies.” Silberzahn added, “I decided to support those making healthier lifestyle changes with something that we all agree is hard to avoid—parties, events, weddings, and other celebrations. It’s all about
The Experience W
aterfront dining options. Cocktails in the breeze. Live entertainment.
The area’s newest waterfront restaurant offers more than just another option. The Lake House on Cedar lake offers not only a great dining experience with the best view in Wisconsin, but the experience will expand to include the free white sand beach, amazing cocktails, live music, a private event hall and beautiful tiki bar.
Nick Conway, owner and proprietor of The Lake House knows that people want options when it comes to dining and entertainment. He and his staff are prepared to make the experience memorable on your next visit. “Food is a huge aspect of our business. We are one of the best waterfront dining options in Manitowoc County,” he said. “But it’s more than just the location. We want to provide our patrons with fresh, local, healthy and tasty American comfort food.”
Krystle Augsburger is the new chef at The Lake House, and she brings great experience from both the Sheboygan Yacht Club and Osthoff Resort. “She loves to come up with new and fresh ideas that will continue to separate us from the rest of the pack,” Conway said. “She has great vision.” The chef’s ingenuity has pointed to recent specialties like margarita tacos and tequila shrimp nachos, both crowd pleasers since their introduction. The printed menu is supplemented by the fresh Catch of the Week. “We wanted to offer something in the seafood realm every week of the year,” Conway noted. “Our chef comes up with the recipes, and she has done some amazing things with salmon and sword fish.” Just recently, The Lake House served a Catch of the Week Special that offered salmon in orange sauce. She enhanced the entree with bourbon glazed grilled carrots and garlic mashed potatoes.
Family atmosphere While the range of options is important to Conway, he wants The Lake House to be known as a family restaurant, and he hopes that it will become known for the customer service, vision and overall experience. “Part of our experience is the service, and we have pulled together a great staff from some amazing local families. They have great work ethic and background. We know they will serve our customers well” Conway noted that his wife, Brandi, offered that Kiel connection. Originally from Kiel, she currently works as a nurse, but she knows so many of the staff and families that they come from.
Cocktails abound “We don’t like to think of ourselves in a particular lane of food options. We might have salads and burgers, but they will have a high end feel. We like to call it casually gourmet,” he said. A wide selection of appetizers is available year around, with the list including items like jumbo Bavarian pretzels, Henning’s beer battered cheese curds, home made sliders, Shrimp de Johnge. An aggressive burger menu includes bold burger choices for big appetites, all with a flaire for the creative. When it comes to the dinner menu, Conway said The Lake House will feature local steaks. Great cocktail options abound at The Lake House. One of the hot specialties out of the gate has been the blueberry-infused whiskey old fashioned. Turning the tables on one of Wisconsin’s great supper club traditions, The Lake House takes old fashioneds into a new zone. “The whiskey sits in the blueberries for hours, and it serves as the basis for our old fashioned. They are simply delicious,” even if Conway must compliment his own concoction. Employed by years with Bacardi

Lake House Happy Hour is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week, with appetizers served at half price, and a buck off on any drink of choice. Happy Hour unwinds at The Lake House from 3-6 p.m. on those days. The Lake House also plans to enhance the customer experience with a full slate of musical performers. Bands and solo artists have been booked for the summer season, with music every Saturday and Sunday from June to September. “The musicians range from six piece bands to solo acts—guys with a guitar,” he said. Nick Rincon, a friend of Conway’s, has been one of the early performers. He will appear at Country USA later this summer.
Many plans for summer Beyond food and entertainment, The Lake House has already planned several special events for the summer. “We are hoping to keep the beach free to the public, and we hope to add kayak and paddle board rentals,” Conway said. “We also want to do events like family movie nights on the beach.” The Lake House offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Located south of County Highway X on Cedar Lake Road, ample parking is available on site. The Lake House is open for lunch, dinner, drinks and coffee. Doors open daily at 11 a.m. The kitchen closes at 9, but the bar is open until 11 and fresh made pizzas are always available when the bar is open. Walk-ins are always welcome.

The Kids from Wisconsin were established in 1968 by Douglas G. Weiford, secretary of the Department of Local Affairs and Development, in keeping with Governor Warren P. Knowles’ “Youth Power Program.” Since their organization in 1968 and first performance in 1969, the Kids from Wisconsin show troupe has performed at state and county fairs, festivals, national trade shows and conventions. Their travels have taken them to many hometown stages as well as distinguished stages such as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, Cabo Hall in Detroit, the Convention Center in Atlantic City, and the Canadian National Exhibition, which at the time was the world’s largest fair. In the earlier days before artists hired their own opening acts, The Kids performed before big-name artists including Dianna Ross and The Supremes, Guy Lombardo, Eddie Albert, James Darren, Liberace, Friends of Distinction, George Kirby, Pat Boone, Roger Miller, Sonny and Cher, Johnny Cash, John Davidson, and many more. Love Bomb Day by Darlene Buechel
A
ug. 1, 2018 was a typical Wednesday workday.
For Danielle and her oldest son Maverick, however, that dog day of summer turned into Love Bomb Day! Never heard of it? Me either. Danielle got the idea from the online blog Gavin’s Mommy, written by Kate Leong. Kate’s son Gavin had a terminal condition so they spent many days at doctors’ appointments. Kate realized her younger son Brian was feeling neglected so she started taking Brian on special one-on-one adventures she deemed Love Bomb Day. Any parent with more than one child knows it can be a challenge to keep the kids from breaking toys on each other’s head, much less spend quality one-onone time. Young working moms especially have it tough. Weekends are spent cleaning, running errands, and trying to jam 28 hours into a 24-hour day. Family vacations—whether a day or a week—can be exciting but with kids in the mix there is bound to be more whining, bickering, and hair pulling (this includes frazzled mom, too).
Folks with two or more kids don’t need examples of sibling rivalry, but Dani does a good job of journaling the special moments between Maverick and little brother
Axel. For example: One day when a few bad choices were made, Maverick said, “Great, Axel. Now we lost Popsicle privileges. Are you happy about that? ‘Cuz
I’m not!” One Saturday after a less than wonderful Walmart visit, Danielle pulled up at Terra Verde for an afternoon caffeine jolt. “Look, Axel. We drove Mom SUMMER 2019|

to drink!” Maverick piped from the back seat. Another epic Mav/Axel moment happened at home when Maverick scowled at his brother. “Come here Meatloaf,” Mav said. Dani said, “What did you just call your brother?” Mav replied, “He hates it when I call him Salsa, so now he’s Meatloaf.” I can’t even make this stuff up!
tears in his eyes.” She said a highlight of Love Bomb with Axel is hearing his voice and view of things. “A lot of times he gets overshadowed by his older brother.”
Meanwhile back to Bomb Day. Danielle had to schedule vacation time and do some advance planning, but the most important plan was to keep it a secret from Maverick. The 8-year-old knew his day was coming, he just didn’t know when. Dani told him she would pick him up at daycare some random morning and whisk him away for fun.
I think Love Bomb Day is a fun idea for parents and grandparents alike. I only have two grandkids but I very seldom get one-onone time with each boy. I can imagine it’s even tougher for grandmas with a whole tribe of grandkids. Maybe all of us should schedule a one-on-one Love Bomb Day with our kids or grandkids. If money is tight an afternoon at the park complete with a PBJ picnic lunch would thrill most kids ages 3 to 10. It may not be as easy to please a tween or teen, but a shopping trip, movie, or ice cream treat could open up lines of communication if it’s done one-onone.
Little brother Axel had his Love Bomb in July. On a walk with Mom he got to grab her phone to take pictures of bugs, dirt, and other special stuff. Axel and Mom painted together, went to his doctor’s appointment, and dashed off to Badger Sports Park in Appleton where Axel did the bouncy house, claw machine, and photo booth. Shortly after his Love Bomb Day Dani asked her almost 5-year old, “How much do you love me?” Axel replied, “I can’t think of a word. It’s...very a lot.” On Aug. 1, Dani had dropped both boys at daycare as if it were a typical summer weekday. When she came back to pick Maverick up a few hour

later his big blue eyes exploded. “I was really happy. I was shocked!” Maverick told me later. After a quick jaunt to Urgent Care to get ear pain checked out (turns out it was a bad case of swimmers ear—not an ear infection) they were off for fun. They enjoyed go-karts, batting cages, mini golf, and arcade games at Badger Sports Park. Mav was also happy to meet dad at one of his favorite places for lunch—HuHot Mongolian Grill. Maverick said his favorite activity of the day was mini golf. “Because I beat Mom!” Danielle thought the best part about Love Bomb with Maverick was surprising him at daycare. “He got
In the days, months, and years to come, most parents and kids won’t remember a typical Wednesday workday like Aug. 1. If you make it a Love Bomb Day the memories are bound to last—long after you’re over the sore muscles and HuHot burps. I’m pretty sure both adult and child will treasure a Love Bomb Day...in the words of Axel, “very a lot!“
