TAKING INSPIRATION FROM DESIGNERS RIK OWENS AND RAF SIMONS SARA WILSON
envisions her collection to be most successful within the Japanese market text: LEANNE JOHNSON
Creating a beautiful enigma through the juxtaposition of fabrics, Sara Wilson creates her graduate menswear collection based on a sinister take of the 19th century clown. Taking inspiration from designers Rik Owens and Raf Simons, Sara envisions her collection to be most successful within the Japanese market. Using her previous experience in the fashion industry to her advantage, Sara enjoys working backstage as a dresser which later influenced her costume inspired collection. Sara focuses on specific colours when designing her garments, pin pointing shades of gun metal grey with subtle flashes of colour, preserving a flow of consistency throughout her spring-summer collection. Originally from Blackpool, Sara has previously interned at Alfred Dunhill for six months where she found the
opportunity to design for the menswear range. In her own collection Sara recreates a nostalgic tale setting an example of how menswear can be portrayed through the concept of layers. In preparation for Graduate Fashion Week, Sara has produced four full outfits with seventeen garments in total aided by the use of sheers. When asked which garment was her favourite, Sara chose the full bodysuit featuring encrusted sequins around the mouth area. Another favoured addition to her collection is a jacket lined with an orange and red print inspired by a circus image. Specialising in menswear Sara adds a feminine element to her designs without losing the aspect of masculinity all at the same time. Sara currently freelances for website, www.notjustalabel.com, where she has previously attended GFW to look for on trend pieces to add to the website. Through playing with knitwear and textiles, Sara’s collection will bring its own element of drama to Graduate Fashion Week.

INSPIRED BY THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS OF BUTTERFLIES JEMMA PAGE
creates knitwear that cocoons the body, for maximum comfort and sculptural effect text: DANIELLE WOOD
Designed for maximum impact is a unique sculptural knitwear collection from Northumbria University Fashion Design student Jemma Page. The inspiration for the sophisticated silhouetted collection has come from the transformation process of butterflies, creating knitwear that cocoons the body, for maximum comfort and sculptural effect.
with every piece designed for a luxuriously chic look, with jackets, knitted dresses, jumpers and even a pair of meticulously knitted trousers. The young designer’s favourite piece from the collection is a structured jacket with hook and welt detail, created to exaggerate the shoulder shape of the wearer, creating a striking silhouette.
Originally from Middlesbrough in the North East of England, Jemma has spread her wings during her time at Northumbria gaining experience in roles at knitwear supplier Tapestry, who supply knitwear for high street stores including Topshop and online store ASOS, Rubecksen and Yamanaka, and Conde nast publishing, and hopes to embark on a career in design upon graduating in summer 2010.
Working with sculptural pieces with an element of theatre, Jemma is inspired by Jill Sander and the late Alexander McQueen working with silhouettes and shapes before working in a colour scheme to suit. The bold colour palette for the cocooning collection is a rippling combination of greys, navy blue, red and orange, each combined through the use of horizontal stripes.
Jemma’s main inspiration for women’s wear design is the human body, its natural curves and shape, taking these and transforming them, pieces from Jemma’s final year collection create a knitted habitat,
The collection is every woman’s dream, a wearable range of comforting yet chic knitwear, a collection which not only transforms its wearers but also narrates Jemma’s transformation from Northumbria University student to fashion designer.

A COLLECTION THAT IS BASED ON SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL FASHION ANGHARAD GRIFFITHS
aims to steer away from the stereotypical ‘brown hemp’ look in which people relate to ethical fashion text: NATALAIGH TAYLOR “There’s only so much you can learn from a textbook, a course in which includes a year of industrial experience is perfect.” Final year fashion student Angharad Griffiths thinks Northumbria University should be duly credited for the invaluable time and effort they invest with regards to the placement year. Thrown into the deep end of a whirlwind they call “the fashion industry”, Angharad began her career in the fast paced, ever changing industry. Working with high-end designer Erdem has been a life changing and experiential step forward. When welcomed into the manic studio “could you toile up this trench coat” was only the start of things to come. Adapting quickly is an absolute necessity if you want to survive. Erdem is a relatively small company, consisting of several key members and relying on unpaid interns. Angharad’s responsibility within the company was vital; therefore she gained more experience than a superior designer could have offered. The highlight of this experience was working with Brightonbased embroider Jenny King. Angharad stepped into her element with hands-on, textile based work, when trained to assist only three days before ‘the show’ at London Fashion Week. Crucial duties to finish garments last minute were gruelling hard work, yet certainly paid off when images of celebrities such as Keira Knightley wearing one of the dresses featured in glossy magazines only days later. Working as a dresser backstage at the show, thus equipped her with a true sense of the industry. Learning how important
communication is, with limited time and increasing stress levels, a huge responsibility was pinned on her to ensure everything ran smoothly. Angharad began to change her beliefs within the industry. Sitting in a showroom, surrounded by cries of “I want this, and I’ll have that in this colour” compared to meeting a factory worker sewing buttons on all day every day, it occurred to Angharad “How can the contrast within one industry be so vast?” She then re-evaluated her interest, considering what she wanted to achieve within the fashion world. It was then she readdressed herself as an ethical designer. In order to express these thoughts positively, Angharad held a workshop, teaching people how to make garments from recycled clothes. The collection is based on sustainable and ethical fashion. Angharad aims to steer away from the stereotypical ‘brown hemp’ look in which people relate to ethical fashion. Finding a fabric which prints beautifully yet also eliminates the use of pesticides in the manufacturing, which can kill up to 20,000 people per year was difficult, yet thrilling to find a company in which could do just that, it was new to this country, therefore, Angharad would be first to use it. Based around the idea of lost values and how the appreciation of the simple things in life are being lost, such as taking a stroll through the woods and seeing the natural beauty that surrounds us with an array of striking colour and imagery is the sensation Angharad hopes to achieve within her final collection.

NEW KNITS A SOFT AND SUBTLE LANDSCAPE RACHAEL HEWSON
is making waves with her understated fashion statements text: CLAIRE ANDREWS
A gentle palette of pale blues, greys, dusty pinks and creams compliment Rachael’s latest layered knitwear collection. Transparent created stitches drape over her more heavily knitted fabrics. Rachael has produced voluminous yet simplistic designs.
a diverse market, the company’s knitted swatches are sent around the globe to brands from New York, Paris and Shanghai. Rachael’s knitted creations were instantly spotted in the U.S. and picked up by the iconic Tommy Hilfiger brand.
Her muse? The stress-free girl. The girl who can roll out of bed, wear any item from her bedroom floor and still look fabulous.
Rachael sees her work as designer level, but not haute couture. She’s inspired by casualness, comfort and ease. With a collection of ten garments in total, her pieces are not to be made up of single outfits but an assortment of garments, a ‘mix and match’. To be worn day or night, as casual or dressed up as the wearer desires.
With the cocoon shapes of Marni, details of Sonia Rykiel and the chic simplicity of Margaret Howell, Rachael delivers a relaxed, subtle yet luxurious collection. Born in 1987 and schooled in Durham, Rachael joined BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Northumbria University four years ago. Her aim is simple. Excited by the sampling of knitwear through to clothing design, Rachael is keen to become apart of the creative process of the industry. She has gained experience from the internationally renowned knitwear design studio; Made in Brighton. With
Her delicate choice of colour was spontaneously selected from browsing through a drawer of zips. When working on knitwear samples, the compilation of zip shades Rachael came across suited her ‘effortless’ designs perfectly. However carefree Rachael’s collection may appear, her design and quality is not compromised. Using yarns of cashmere and silk, you may feel comfortable but will always, always remain chic.

creates garments that women love to wear text: CHARMAINE AYDEN
Her clothing is something that possesses obvious beauty, without trying too hard to be beautiful. Creating garments that explore and worship the female form, Holly Farrar understands the feminine need to be protected. Exploring vulnerability, her collection discovers protection of the body in both a physical, and non-physical sense.
discovering inspiration in the creations of conceptual designers such as Viktor and Rolf, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan, the young designer deviates away from their abstract approach. “I don’t like the lack of wearablilty. I always think it blurs the boundaries of ‘fashion’ and conceptual art”.
Inspired by the artist, sculptor and architect Santiago Calatrava, Holly creates garments that women love to wear. With an ability to flawlessly depict the female silhouette, while enhancing the perfect waist, Holly’s garments represent strength and splendor.
In addition to her own collection, Holly has spent seven months on placement working with the Topshop Design Team. During this period Holly created numerous products for the store, one of which became a recognised best seller and was sold internationally. While working for Topshop, Holly also contributed to the success of the SS09 Unique show at London Fashion Week. The clothing showcased received great praise from the British Fashion Press, with a number of these garments hand embroidered and studded personally by Holly.
Structure is at the heart of the collection, combining solid architectural lines with graceful drape provides for beautiful, yet commanding garments. Subtly inspired by the 30’s, the collection emphasises a love for tailoring and bias cutting, carefully mixed with understated exposure of flesh. With an admiration for classic designers such as Coco Chanel, Roland Mouret and Maison Martin Margiela, it’s easy to see where inspiration has developed. Creating clothes that are dramatic, yet wearable remains a fundamental part of the design process for Holly. Despite
Anticipating graduation from Northumbria University, Holly has ambitions to head her own design team. “Once I graduate, my aim is to get a job as a designer in a upper high street/desirable range company. Ultimately I want to head a design team, but that’s a long way off yet”. Although, I have a suspicion it won’t be as long as she thinks.
