While libraries were traditionally regarded as havens of quietude, the landscape has shifted. The surge in collaborative study and the allure of congregating amidst the shelves have altered the tranquility once associated with these spaces.

To address this, we propose the creation of acoustic dampening seating nooks, nestled away from the main thoroughfares. These spaces will feature seating designed to absorb ambient noise, fostering an environment conducive to quiet contemplation.

The reinvention of a media library for students

More clarity, more dedicated and defined spaces, opportunities to use and learn digital technology, and house various student projects – these were all on the Anna Rodier High School’s wish list for their new school media library. Initiated by Gisèle Cottel, a teacher-librarian, the investment in refurbishment has paid off. The new space is composed of several zones, dedicated to specific activities.

Encourage reading for pleasure

The slightly enclosed reading space welcomes students to relax, pick up a novel or browse a tablet. Fiction, comics and graphic novels are placed alongside non-fiction books and revision guides so that the space encourages both enjoyment and the pursuit of information or research.

Foster collaboration

Collaborative work is key to students’ academic success. By working together, students can diversify their ideas, share different perspectives, and pool their thoughts and develop ideas. Group projects are a daily part of the life of Anna Rodier’s school media library.

Promote communication

The new space caters to a variety of needs and communication requirements. The space offers an area to host external speakers and give lectures. Whether they are filmmakers, poets, or writers, it was essential for Anna Rodier High School to be able to play host to these major cultural figures.

Only 39% of disadvantaged teenagers reported using a library within the past year, compared to 62% of their more fortunate peers.

What do teens want from the library?

Teenagers have a range of needs when it comes to the library. Here are some common reasons a teen may want to visit their library:

Books and other resources. Starting with the obvious! Teenagers may be looking for books, graphic novels, magazines, audiobooks, and other resources that reflect their interests and help them explore new topics.

Technology. Teenagers may visit a library to use their computer services and Wi-Fi. For those less fortunate, who don’t have access at home, a library space is essential for allowing them to do any research or work they may need to do.

A welcoming and safe environment. Teenagers may be looking for a space where they can study, hang out with friends, or simply relax, so a comfortable and safe environment is essential.

Programmes and activities. Teenagers may be interested in attending workshops, clubs, or other events that allow them to explore their interests and meet other teens. For example, board game meet-ups, book club, and crafting sessions.

Teenagers want a library that is welcoming, accessible, and responsive to their needs and interests. By providing a range of resources, programmes, and services that cater to their needs, libraries can help to support and empower. We recommend having a dedicated space for your teenagers so they can get the best out of your library. Create a welcoming and safe environment for teens to explore their interests, study, and socialise. A dedicated space for teenagers can also provide them with a sense of autonomy and independence, allowing them to feel more comfortable in the library and potentially encouraging them to use the service more frequently.

Encourage spontaneous reading

Optimise engagement and stimulate browsing by increasing the number of display options. It focuses on providing immediate access to teens favourite literature and allows you to highlight authors and genres by showcasing the covers of books on sloped display shelves.

Create a cosy environment

Offer a balance between book presentation and cosy seating nooks to curl up in, where teenagers are tempted to stay and immerse themselves in a book, magazine or graphic novel. Our integrated dens are designed to draw teenagers into the space. Add other elements of loose seating such as bean bags or cushions.

Enhance their experience

Your feedback highlighted the difficulty in appealing to different audiences within your library space. Teenagers preferred visting the library when they were given a dedicated corner, where they can feel autonomous. If teenagers feel welcome and comfortable, they will stay longer and return more often.

Since its refurbishment, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) of the Saint-Jean College-High School in Limoges has transformed into a vibrant and dynamic space. Guided by the vision of the librarian-teachers

Mrs. Viaud and Mrs. Raynaud, and with the support of the WF Education team of designers and planners, the layout of the LRC has been modernised to meet the multiple needs of middle and high school students.

Among the rearrangements, two distinct relaxation reading spaces emerged. A reading corner dedicated to the middle school features a carefully selected arrangement of shelving and furniture to meet the

preferences and reading levels of the students.

Another space, reserved for the sixth form, offers a diverse and enriching collection for more advanced students.

WF undertook the design consultancy and implementation for the refurbishment of this public library after the upgrading of its heating and ventilation system. The council took the opportunity to reassess their service needs and the needs of their diverse and multi-cultural community. The building includes interesting architectural features that the project needed to complement and enhance.

WF created a new fabulous large, dedicated Children’s library. This space, using the Everna™ system has a distinctive look and feel – deliberately different to the main library. The shelving is a mix of 1500 and 1200 in a vibrant kiwi green to appeal to younger children, with plentiful display shelves and browser boxes. The Everna™ system incorporates a large double-width window den and a smaller cosy single den to encourage reading. Developing life-long readers?

Libraries should always be an accessible and welcoming environment for children as they are growing up. They have the power to play a significant role in their cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Unfortunately, many children are missing out on the amazing benefits of either a public or school library space.

The National Literacy Trust said that 32.9% of children don’t visit their school library at all, while 3.9% sadly don’t even have a library available at their school…

Key reasons why libraries are essential for children and young people’s development:

Trolley systems built to last Material

A hard-wearing metal, which is lighter and more manoeuvrable would be a preferable choice.

However, some metal trolleys can be noisy depending on the floor covering. It is imperative that trolleys are equipped with noise-cancelling and welded castors, that will be more solid and discreet.

A wooden trolley can be heavier to transport, and the structure can loosen under intensive use (the trolley will become less stable, and you may get rattling). Wooden trolleys do not last as long as those constructed from metal or a mix of both.

Shelving options

Wide horizontal shelves can accommodate any type of content; however, documents will be less stable and risk falling. Inclined shelves allow a better transport of documents.

A single-sided trolley is a good compromise. It is lighter and more manoeuvrable but will have a limited capacity. A double-sided trolley offers maximum capacity but once loaded can be heavy and more difficult to manoeuvre. A trolley with additional book supports optimises lighter document stability and would be practical if this was an everyday requirement.

Wheels!

4-wheel, multi-directional steering is desirable. The trolley is more manoeuvrable and easier to push through narrow and congested aisles. High friction wheels make it easy to go up a slope whilst low friction wheels will be easier to control but do require more effort when pushing.

Handles

Choose rounded handles, they offer better grip and are more comfortable. Forget about trolleys without handles, they are difficult to push and to pull and very hard to manoeuvre easily. Likewise, those with a T handle will be difficult to turn in a tight space.
