It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, inspiring, and meaningful environment, not about passing fads or fashion. It is rewarding to work closely with our clients to identify their vision and then translating that into full design solutions.”

Engaging Teens to Read for Pleasure
Fast-paced, 21st Century sociological shifts have created a Generation Z of teenagers, otherwise known as the ‘iGen’ who are very different from the X and Y generations.
Driven by technology, these digital-ites are hard researchers, avid gamers, and social media experts with a desire to be entertained on demand. The world of smart technology, gaming consoles, and social media platforms has resulted in today’s teen being predominantly driven by technology and reliant on swift access to information on the go. In the minds of the iGen Google has always existed and wi-fi access is the norm – known to be more independent from an early age, and more driven, alert and even entrepreneurial; but on the contrary, are more self-absorbed, can struggle with face-to-face and real-life social situations, are easily distracted and have declining patience levels.
Barriers to Reading
The increasing use of smart devices and technology has transformed the way today’s young adults think and behave. Two of the biggest shifts are reduced attention span and a lack of ‘patience’ and the ability to wait. Fast access to information on the fly is their expectation, which makes the ability to slowly absorb mass information through reading more challenging. Interest plays a large part in this, but it is keeping them engaged regularly and for longer periods which can be the difficulty. If they are interested in the subject, topic or genre then they may be more likely to read, however when it comes to education and mandatory reading the desire decreases and teens will reach for their devices to learn through technological means such as video and imagery rather than a book. The reading agency published research stating that 31%
of adults do not read for pleasure in their free time, and this statistic is as high as 46% for young adults (aged 16 to 24). Even though many secondary schools maintain a focus and momentum on reading for pleasure, statistics significantly reduce to between 17 to 25% for these age groups – averaging less than a quarter of teenagers reading leisurely and in their own time.
Create an environment for reading
As many parents and teachers know, encouraging teenagers to read in the first place can be a battle but how do you maintain interest and build a love for reading once engaged? The learning environment will be one of the biggest engagement tools you’ll have.
Whether a public or school library, the way you present your reading/learning environment will have a huge impact on how interested teens are, how long they spend reading and maintaining a desire that keeps them reading regularly.
• More than 74% of Gen Z spend their free time online
• In the UK Gen Z spends an average of 10.6 hours online every day
• 66% of Gen Z report using more than one internet-connected device at a time

Relaxing in our Everna™ Teen Reading solution - Module 4
WHY CHOOSE EVERNA™ MODULES FOR TEENAGERS?
Young people often feel much more welcomed and valued when libraries create dedicated spaces for them. WF Education worked with librarians and educators to design corner modules specifically intended to engage teenagers to read for pleasure and improve literacy, by giving them immediate access to

materials and somewhere comfortable to read – whilst giving custodians choice and speed of selection and installation.
We have created “turnkey” solutions, designed to encourage young people to read for pleasure and develop a taste for reading.
ENCOURAGE SPONTANEOUS READING
Optimise engagement and stimulate browsing by increasing the number of display options. It focuses on providing immediate access to teens favourite literature and allows you to highlight authors and genres by showcasing the covers of books on sloped display shelves.
CREATE A COSY ENVIRONMENT
Offer a balance between book presentation and cosy seating nooks to curl up in, where teenagers are tempted to stay, immerse themselves in a book, magazine or graphic novel and read for pleasure. Our integrated dens are designed to draw teenagers into the space. Add other elements of loose seating such as bean bags and cushions.
ENHANCE THEIR EXPERIENCE
Your feedback highlighted the difficulty in appealing to different audiences within your library space. Teenagers preferred visiting the library when they were given a dedicated corner, where they can feel autonomous. If teenagers feel welcome and comfortable, they will stay longer and return more often.

Everna™ Teen reading spaces 7
“We use them in our library and every break time students are to be found snuggled up with a book. They have worked particularly well as they provide a comfortable place to browse for those students who are less motivated readers.!”
Laura Ballantye, Subject Leader for Literacy, Beccles Free School
Enduringly popular with teenagers...
Ah the ever popular bean bag! So simple yet so crucial for creating cosy nooks to curl up with a book. It remains a key element in creating spaces dedicated to teenagers. Their enveloping shape has always been popular with younger children, but they are coveted by older children. They
use beanbags to settle down and read on the spot, with the seats informal nature encouraging them to lounge and get comfortable. We know that if teenagers are comfortable, they will stay and read for longer. Beanbags are also a useful and economic way to add a splash of colour to your library space.

The value of comics in libraries: engaging readers, expanding readership...
We recognise the value of comics and graphic novels in libraries, and how best to build and promote a collection that increases literacy and engages readers of all ages.
By working with librarians and the library sector, we have learned:
The multi-literacy superpowers of comics
Innovative ways to shelve, and promote comics in your library
How to build community engagement with your graphic novel collection
Multimodal texts include picture books, text books, graphic novels, and comics, where meaning is conveyed to the reader through varying combinations of visual (still image) written language, and spatial modes.
Comics and graphic novels are great for reluctant readers as they are less overwhelming and supported by visual cues. They are also brilliant for advanced readers because of their concise and efficient writing and the high incidence of rare words.
Embrace interest in these popular materials and invest in furniture to encourage browsing and borrowing.

Treorchy Pontypridd
Pontypridd’s Area Library Manager, Richard Reed, is a longtime fan of the Cantilibra ™ shelving system. Used in over 10 of his libraries in South Wales, it was no surprise the project team chose Cantilibra™ shelving when designing this new £38 million development.
Comprised of three buildings – two office blocks and a flagship iconically shaped community building, it contains shared community facilities, a library, council offices, a leisure and fitness centre, retail units, and a café.
WF Education were engaged by the Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC to design and fit-out the entire Llys Cadwyn library facility.
We collaborated closely with all stakeholders throughout the process to agree a design that really works. We specified and provided the mobile Cantilibra™ shelving in shapes that echoed the buildings curve design along with complementary loose furniture.
We designed elements specific to the new space, which included the reception area, children’s teens focused zone, under stair buggy nook and cosy tactile reading dens.
It was important to the project that the shelving was mobile and could be reconfigured according to the required use of the space.

Create presentation spaces and encourage participation
The art of presentation is an essential skill for today’s students. It is necessary to regularly offer them the opportunity to develop their skills in different contexts. According to CBI’s Education Development Survey (2010), more than two-thirds of employers (70%) would like teachers to make it a point to develop these skills in their young students.
Presentation skills are important for:
Communicating complex information in a simple way
Communicating thoughts and feelings effectively
Developing self-confidence
Improving professional skills
Create spaces that support creativity
Creativity engages the mind and frees it in a way that allows students to better absorb knowledge. Creative participation in discussions nurtures a sense of sharing, teamwork and cooperation. Creativity also promotes mental growth in children by providing the opportunity to try new ideas, new ways of thinking and solving problems.
Create a relaxing space
When space is limited, it is essential to find appropriate places for students to meet or congregate outside of classrooms. The objective of creating relaxation areas is to offer dedicated places that do not resemble the environment of a classic classroom. There are many ways to achieve this, but the focus should be on colour, textures, lighting and furnishings. By selecting these elements carefully, you will create a unique, flexible, creative, alternative educational environment. Relaxation zones could be created throughout campus, using spaces such as hallways, stairways, some library areas, lunchrooms, and outdoor spaces.
The advantages of a relaxation area: Encourages clear and creative thinking. Contributes to well-being. Promotes social interaction. Encourages a sense of community

MADE TO EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO EXPLORE LITERATURE, EXPAND THEIR HORIZONS AND IMPROVE LITERACY
Idsall School in Shropshire approached WF Education as they needed a complete library re-vamp. Describing their old space as ‘cluttered, ‘dingy’ and ‘outdated’, they wanted a new modern style to increase interaction with their library service. They also felt like their space was not being utilised to its full potential.
As the students returned from the Summer holidays they were stunned by the transformation...
A student commented, ‘I was honestly amazed; I knew they were making a new library, but I didn’t expect it to be this much better!’
Vicky, Idsall’s LRC Manager, said the old library was not a very welcoming environment and noticed the students were not using the library facilities very often.
‘The old library had been here for 20 years plus; it was old and crowded and not the best environment to study in.’

Since the term started, she said she has already noticed an increase in visitors. She said students are eager to come in and see the changes, and tend to hang around for longer, using the space to study, use the computers and to read.
Vicky also said the new library was a much nicer environment to spend time in, not only for the students, but for herself too.

Encourage collaboration...
Collaboration is one of the key four soft skills, and today is recognised and valued by organisations across the globe. The concept of a collaborative space stems from the emergence of alternative places dedicated to sharing ideas and working on projects together.
It is essential that both public and educational libraries offer spaces that delivers an environment that encourages communication and teamwork. Somewhere they can share ideas, mindmap, as well as hold workshops, conferences and presentations!
Access to these spaces are linked to having a modular and adaptable space, depending on the needs of the users.
We must be able to adapt the space we have with light, easy-to-move furniture, and portable IT equipment such as tablets, laptops and Wi-Fi.

IGNITING CURIOSITY, SUPPORTING LITERACY SKILLS, CREATING A READING CULTURE…
In order to inspire children to read, it is important to create a dedicated space for them, with suitable furniture where the books displayed forward are books suitable for their age. It is essential to give them access to a variety of books, which helps to ignite their interest, make them independent and introduce them to the world of reading.
Reading for fun is the best way for a child to learn to love reading. The choice of reading material contributes to making children readers for life. Children who choose what they read are more interested and retain information better. We created dedicated age-appropriate reading modules designed to encourage this young audience to read and develop a taste for reading.
OUR SPACES ARE BASED ON 3 PRINCIPLES:
INVITE SPONTANEOUS READING
It is much more stimulating for younger children to browse the colourful front cover of a book rather than its spine, particularly if they can’t yet read. A child will be more likely to explore a book if they like the cover.
ENCOURAGE THEM TO READ INSTANTLY
By offering comfortable and playful seating in the immediate vicinity, children will be tempted to sit, relax, and immerse themselves in a book. Our cosy alcoves encourage children to consult on the spot, attracting them instantly.
CATCH THEIR EYE AND STIMULATE THEIR INTEREST
Make reading and storytime fun by creating cosy dedicated spaces where children feel comfortable and welcomed. Our modules create immersive spaces with bright colours and age-appropriate graphics that let them know they’re in the right place.

B – a balance which optimises the mix between seats, storage and displays.
C – maximises storage capacity for libraries with a smaller footprint and large literature stock.

From render to reality!
Based in Tonbridge in Kent the Paddock Wood Library was founded in 1889 and has been serving the community ever since. Their range of services are wide, it deals mostly with public issues from social services to business, community, education, learning, health, wellbeing, culture, job services, transportation and much more.
WF Education Group were asked to design the upgraded area after completing a mini refurbishment at the Kent History and Library Centre.
Our design team were able to refine and communicate our design remotely via Teams calls, producing the quote/visuals/suggested colour schemes within 2 weeks of the initial enquiry. To fit with the library’s schedule for shut down, the project and installation needed to be turned around fast.
We created a space using our Everna™ range as it fitted with what they wanted from within the space… modern, attractive, and flexible – everything the original library wasn’t.
Sarah Gilbert – Assistant Service Manager
The carefully considered modular elements of the Everna™ system allows for limitless combinations of colours, application and layout.
Though not a large space, the design incorporated designated ‘zones’ for adults, children, and IT users, as well as a help desk, self-issue station and a quick picks section.
The double-sided shelving units maximise the space for book stock, while adding essential display shelving, particularly in the children’s area. Woodland themed graphics, cushions and rugs accentuated the outside in feel of the upgraded space to appeal to a younger audience.
To give the space a cohesive feel, our designers suggested that the shelving was clad in one colour – kiwi green, giving the space a real identity.

The scope for designing a library space is broad (and will only get broader!) and needs to take a considered, strategic, collaborative approach.
A successful outcome for any project depends on sound detailed planning and consultation during the preliminary stages and then adhering to these plans.
Your project team may be required to learn new skills such as: reading plans and scaling interpreting drawings producing and distributing relevant meeting notes scheduling timeline meetings and communicating across sometimes multiplatform channels
Our guide can help you navigate the entire journey.
The WF Education design team provides you with practical advice and tips based on our experiences and observations gained from designing inspiring spaces for over three decades.

Presentation and exhibition
Sometimes it can be the surprise part of a librarian’s role – creating engaging and inspirational displays, presentations, and exhibitions to pique the interest of your library visitors!
But they are an excellent tool to reach out to library users and to encourage the wider community to visit your space. Preparing them can be time-consuming and having the right tools and equipment is essential for making life easier!
Why are displays and exhibitions important to libraries?
Teaching tool
A display is a is a wonderful opportunity for the library to organise materials around a theme and present that to its audiences as a self-learning experience. People can interact with the display in their own time.
Attract new audiences
Something new in the library can create a buzz. Although a libraries core business generates the greatest volume of service and use, often it is the special exhibit that creates excitement. The exhibit may get coverage in a local newspaper or produce content for your website and social feeds.
Professional development opportunity
Exhibitions call for a librarian’s best thinking, research, creative, writing, planning, organising, and time management skills.
Use of unique collections
Some collections, particularly materials in Special Collections and Archives, will seldom be seen by your patrons or used unless they are physically presented in your library space.
Develop partnerships
Creating an exhibition or display on behalf of authors, local groups and organisations, artists or historians provides opportunities to develop relationships within the community and encourage diverse groups to visit a space they may not ordinarily visit.

5 Display Tips
The books should be the stars
Choose books with fresh, visually appealing covers in good condition.
Displays should be popular
While time should be spent filling a display fixture, the ultimate goal is to empty it! Change up topics day-to-day if this isn’t happening.
Use props judiciously to catch the eye
A beach ball and a towel for a travel display, Wonka bars and golden tickets for Roald Dahl...you get the idea!
Let current events inspire your displays
Relate your collection to real life events and topics. The Black Lives Matter movement, cost of living, mental health, the war in Ukraine etc...
Make checkout clear
You want them to check display items out, so make it clear that they can and where! This may be obvious to you, but it not always for the customer.

It is important to let patrons choose their own reading materials, but it can be intimidating for less confident readers. Book protection
Meet the Book Doctor - First aid for books
Thousands of books represent a significant financial investment.
Protecting books and prolonging their shelf life is essential. Gresswell has been providing book care products for over 80 years. Offering the widest range of specialised products, you can be assured we have the right one for your book care needs.
Prevention is better than cure! Whether paperback or hardback, books are prone to wear and tear. Nobody wants to remove a book from the shelves, retire a title from the library or order unnecessary replacement stock.
However, if a cure is necessary, being able to react quickly to repair damaged books is crucial to maintaining circulation efficiency and prolonging the shelf life of all library materials.
Covers can get ripped and spines can get damaged from regular use. Bookbinding repairs can make books stronger than new and are worth investing in. Gresswell’s Book Repair Centre kit and associated recommended products are ideal for spine repair, reinforcing inside hinges, spines, periodical pages, and even laminating paperback books.
Pages can come loose, either individually or in some cases the whole signature can become detached from the cover. We have a wide range of book and binder tapes and films, suitable for any requirement or budget.
DAY-TO-DAY BOOK REPAIR AND CONSERVATION, BOOK DOCTOR HAS THE REMEDY. This pack was put together following consultation with professional librarians to find out just what was needed on a day-to-day basis to keep books in good repair.
