St Margaret’s School embraces its new space for robotics

St Margaret’s School is a co-educational, independent school for pupils aged 2 to 18 based in Bushey, Hertfordshire. The innovative and forward-thinking school welcomed Sima Bhudia to her new role as Head of Design & Technology in September 2022. Her brief included the planning and implementation of a brandnew D&T facility which also introduced enhanced STEM teaching and learning.

WF Education worked with Sima and her team to convert what was initially a ‘tractor shed’ into two functional D&T/STEM classrooms for multiple D&T activities, a CAD/CAM workshop, and a prep room.

STEM is where we are heading now! Our s aces an our teac ing nee to e e i e enough to teach cross-curricular, where maths and science come into projects and the science and maths teachers also teachapplying the knowledge of maths, science and D&T, bringing it all together.

Materials - acrylic

Our cast acrylic from Crylux® is suitable for laser cutting, CNC machining, line bending and blow moulding. It can also be cut using a plastics cutter or on a bandsaw or scrollsaw. O en used for fabrication, laser engravings, noticeboards and signage and attractive displays

It is manufactured to a high standard and provides impact and UV resistance, good thermal stability and low water asorption. It is very easy to work with and cast in particular is recommended for CNC machining.

We have many di erent finishes available including opaque, transparent, fluorescent, frosted and standard clear. Introducing the Schred - recycling system

Design and Technology is the perfect subject to get students involved with recycling!

The CR Clarke plastic recycling system allows you to recycle old plastic into usable sheets of material suitable for thrermoforming. Materials that can be recycled include PP, HIPS, ABS and LDPE (milk bottles).

The system consists of a granulator which continually shreds the fed material into very small pellets and a sheet press which uses heat and pressure to turn the pellets into a plastic sheet. Check out the range for more detail online.

The R25 is an industrial-quality plastic granulator. Suitable materials for recycling include PP, HIPS, ABS, and LDPE.

Materials to be granulated are loaded into the hopper at the top of the machine. A combination of static and rotating blades gradually chops the material into smaller and smaller pieces. Once the material reaches a small enough size it passes out through a mesh filter and into a collection bin.

Use the C R Clarke Plastic Sheet Making Press in conjunction with the Schred system to turn your old plastic waste into usable vacuum thermoforming.

The R30 Sheet Press converts granulated thermoplastic material into a usable form using heat and pressure. As standard, the formed article is a flat plastic sheet, which can typically be used thermoforming forming, laser cutting, line bending etc. There are also tools available for making shaped parts, for example frisbees, on the machine.

The newly built Belle Vue Academy required a versatile and adaptable D&T practical teaching space. The Co-op Academy delivery team worked with WF Education to plan and implement their full facility.

The installation included an adaptable workshop and prep room and included mobile work and machinery benches, equipment (including a brazing hearth, ACM 540 Education Bandsaw, bench top metal lathe, PRO CNC Router with F1 Package, PCB engraver, 3D printer, Laser) and a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and materials. They chose an Onyx Grey finish from the Akira™ colour palette, with accents of blue, giving the room a fresh and contemporary feel.

The heavy-duty and mobile Akira™ system which has future-proofed the D&T facilities, gives teachers and technicians multiple options to change the activity and layout quickly and easily at any point in the future.

The workshop space incorporates a clever mix of traditional static workbenches coupled with Akira™ mobile, machinery workbenches o ering Belle Vue Academy a practical space perfect for teaching fabrication. They required a mix of machinery benches with pillar drills, scrollsaws, and a bandfacer, which includes under-bench extraction where appropriate, as well as useful additional cupboards and tray storage for tools and materials (selected from our TSL range).
