Exploring cities is one of my most engrossing moments. I travel through various fields and capture their landscapes, from the modernist skyscrapers that soar into the sky, to the classical European style houses and interiors. Gradually, I have come to understand that a great deal of Chinese architecture are being affected by the trend of globalization and losing its cultural identity. How should architecture get rid of uniformity through locality and find its own unique cultural symbols? I have been trying to find the answer in my five years of study. Changsha, the city where my university is located, is a city known for its rich history and rapid development. However, many of its contemporary buildings lack unique cultural symbols and instead exhibit a uniformity that fails to enhance the vibrant spirit of this historic city. It is not until the Meixi Lake Grand Theatre, designed by Zaha Hadid, that I see a successful attempt to incorporate the cultural symbol of the hibiscus flower in Changsha into a distinctive modernist style. This attempt reveals to me that the modernist style can be blended with local Chinese characteristics to bring out new vitality. Inspired by this, I have embarked on an architectural experiment on locality, renovating a historical building. Drawing on the symbols of Hunan's traditional courtyard layout,it incorporates the traditional industries of floriculture and fishery to provide the neighborhood with a necessary activity area and a restaurant. While I am passionate about the locality of architecture, I also recognize that the essence of architecture cannot be separated from the care and consideration for people. Therefore, I paid attention to the needs and rights of disadvantaged groups. One such project I have set my sights globally focuses on Lampedusa, a small island in Italy that serves as the gateway for North African refugees seeking entry into Europe. However, locals and refugees have to compete with each other because of the limited resources on the island. To address this issue, I envision a refugee camp for refugees to transition their identities. Working with deconstructed religious symbols and the geography of the Italian island, multiple living spaces and shared spaces are provided that fuse Christianity and Islam. The project addresses the issue of refugee survival and promotes mutual understanding between people from different cultural backgrounds. Considering my current skills and background, I would like to pursue a career as an architect, delving into both field-based architectural projects and the exploration of architectural theory, which has always captivated me. The university of Edinburgh’s multiple workshops and facilities teaching models and its high level of exploration of the world's advanced technologies and theories, fit well with my future plans. Therefore, it is my dream school where I hope to further my education. At Edin, I envision incorporating prominent technological theories while exploring the humanities that interest me. My ultimate objective is to contribute to a better place by finding answers to the complex problems of modernist architecture and cities through constant practice.

I have always been fascinated by the contradictions and complexities of architecture and believe that architecture will always be an intermediary between people and the world. Before construction, architecture fulfills the needs of people and nature, presenting the cultural heritage of the region and people's spirituality in a localized way. When it is built, it becomes itself, and people can find their emotional and spiritual values in it.

01 IDENTITY RESHAPE CAMP CENTERED ON TRANSFORMATION OF REFUGEE STATUS Site:Lampedusa Italy Independent Study Date:2023.11 Academic Type:Individual project Instructor:Zhiwen Instructor's Contact:archzhiwen@gmail.com

Lampedusa is the first springboard for North African refugees seeking asylum in Europe. On this small island of only 20 square kilometers, differences about resources, culture, religion and language are violently colliding. How should people approach this clash, tolerate it or stop it? How should the refugees overcome the difficulties they will face, both psychologically and physically? How should the original life of the indigenous people on the island be preserved, fought for or compromised? I create a new building that allows both refugees and indigenous people to enter at the same time. For the refugees, while guaranteeing the basic living space, different types of activity spaces are provided in order to overcome the problems caused by language and cultural differences. Besides, religious symbols are used to show how people from two different cultures understand each other’s similarities and differences.

The route of the refugee’s identity transformation creates an invisible barrier that is used as a wall at the junction of the sea and the island, while the lighthouse serves as a guide to lead the way. An accessible space can help Islamist refugees overcome the barrier. From there, they can choose to move on to their next home and complete their identity transition. 4

When a building loses its life in the course of history, how can he keep the building alive in the spirit of the past? When a community is forced to move away because nearby industries cannot support the daily lives of its residents, how can it carry out its proper mission? Through the application of architecture in the local context, I transformed the granary in the town of Tiaoma, continuing its mission of food storage, while integrating local industries, such as fisheries and floriculture, to create an eco-community that provides food as a dwelling place. This will revitalize the grain silo and provide convenience for the residents in the neighborhood.

As the primary participants in group activities, college students serve as a significant carrier of social events on campus, engaging in various types of social interactions almost constantly. Extroverts are capable of dominating entire spatial atmosphere filled with social activities and visual interaction. On the other hand, introverts face numerous challenges in terms of eye contact anxiety and isolated space. The project aims to achieve a balance between the mindsets of introverts and extroverts by creating an interior space that can be perceived as both inside and outside the walls ,incorporating a series of walls and windows to establish a sense of independence amidst constant flow of people.
