Welcome to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Welsh Cup Quarter Final against Llanelli Town.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Llanelli players, coaching team, Committee and supporters on their long journey here I’m sure you’ll all agree that the sooner there is a faster road link between North and South Wales the better
It’s an auspicious occasion for our Club today in that it is the first time in our 148 year history that we have played in the Quarter Final of the Welsh Cup. In the Cup so far this season, we have played “Llans” in every round with us already beating Llangefni, Llanrwst and Llanuwchllyn. Llanelli are the last Llan left in the competition. The other ties which are being played in this round are The New Saints v Airbus, Caerau Ely v Connah’s Quay Nomads and Cambrian United v Carmarthen Town.
With only two JD Cymru Premier teams left in the competition ( TNS & Connahs Quay Nomads), there is a very strong chance for one, if not two of the six second tier teams to reach the final. We are more than aware of the pedigree of our visitors today. They stand top of the JD Cymru South having only lost one league game this season and scored 50 league goals. In the past they have played in the Cymru Premier and qualified to play in the UEFA Champions League (200809) and the Europa League on three occasions. We are under no illusions that it will be a tough game for Dewi’s lads today.
Over the last few days, we have taken down the conifer hedge which was behind the goal at the Denbigh High School end of the ground We must extend our pitch in the close season to make sure its length is compatible with the requirements of the UEFA Euro Under 19s tournament in June 2026 where we are one of the North Wales grounds to host matches This had to be done now before birds possibly began nesting in the hedge with the spring approaching
We are looking to complete the purchase of a three-metre strip of land behind the goal at the Myddleton College end of the ground from Denbighshire County Council During the forthcoming close season, we will then dig into the bank in order to extend the length of the pitch at this end Progress on the new Community Facility continues to take steps with the blockwork well on the way to being completed to the first floor level
This afternoon we also welcome the TV cameras from S4C’s Sgorio team We have had a temporary TV gantry built to host them for today’s game. It is in our plans to have a permanent structure built in good time for the June 2026 tournament.
Enough from me. Let’s enjoy the game and hope our lads put on a creditable show, come out winners and head into the hat for the Semi-Final.
Good afternoon and welcome to Central Park, Denbigh. Pnawn da a chroeso cynnes i chi gyd i Barc Canolog Dinbych.
This afternoon we welcome Llanelli in the Quarter-Final of the JD Welsh Cup We know we are in for a tough game with both teams competing in the second tier of Welsh football Llanelli are unbeaten in all games since October and beat JD Cymru Premier side Haverfordwest to reach this stage
So, unlike the previous rounds we have won where we were favourites, it’s fair to say we are underdogs today although we do have home advantage
We’re on a three-match unbeaten run after beating Guilsfield and Penrhyncoch and then drawing 2-2 at Llandudno last Friday night. We could so easily have claimed three points with them equalising deep into injury time It was a game that was dictated by strong winds We took an early lead with a superb goal from Nathan Brown after great link-up play with Bobby Beaumont. A few minutes later we were two up thanks to a brilliant free kick from Nathan after he’d been fouled 35yards from goal You can have a look at these goals on our social media channels
We could have gone into the break three up as Nathan had another free kick rattle the crossbar, the second half saw the strong wind increase in force and we had our backs to the wall for most of the half as it was so difficult to clear the ball into the gale force wind. Our defensive work during this half was exemplary as it really was like the Alamo with us holding out until the 87th minute when they pulled one back and then they drew level in injury time.
With Aaron Jones being unavailable Elijah Beattie made his debut in goal at Llandudno. What a baptism of fire this was, and he did admirably under some extremely testing conditions, making some vital stops and dealing with difficult swirling balls being fired at him
Our new loan signing Jordan Pownall also made his debut that night in a midfield role A regular in Connahs Quay Nomads’ first-team squad this season, he is looking for more playing time and made an impressive start at Llandudno, meaning we have more and more competition for places as we enter the final stages of the season.
We’ve trained well this week, and everyone is available for selection The recent results and the new additions to the squad have meant there is an extra vitality in our training sessions which can hopefully bode well for today and the next few months
With it being our first-ever appearance in the Quarter Finals, it is a proud moment for all of us involved with the Club to have reached this stage of the competition Your support will be invaluable and I’m aware that a large number of our Juniors will be attending the game and no doubt many of their parents
All of us are extremely appreciative of the support this season, both home and away. Let’s look to getting behind the lads and get the win
Llandudno 2-2 Denbigh Town
Denbigh Town came away from Llanaudno on Friday night with just a point to show for their efforts as the hosts hit two late goals to snatch a draw.
Nathan Brown’s two superb finishes - taking the forward to joint third in the club’s all-time second tier scorers chart - weren’t enough as hurricane-like conditions bombarded the town box throughout the second half, where in reality Town did well to hold out for a point.
Dewi Llion made two changes to the side with Aaron Jones and Kyle Cooper unavailable, opting to hand debuts to Elijah Beattie and Jordan Pownall.
It took Town just four minutes to take the lead at Maesdu Park when Brown and Bobby Beaumont linked up brilliantly down the left before the former smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.
The quick start continued with Brown again causing issues for the Llandudno back line with 13 on the clock, he raced forward before being cut down 30-yards out just right of centre. He stood over the free-kick before rifling the ball into the top right corner to double the advantage, marking two milestone goals for the winger
Three minutes later Town were in the hunt for their third when Brown found Sam Duffy who tested the keeper with a low effort, but it was easily matched
Llandudno finally got a grip on the game but were still struggling to create anything After 34 minutes a ball into Denbigh’s box was cleared and they broke via Davies who threaded a pass through to Brown who couldn’t get the right connection on his effort.
The best chance of the first half for Llandudno came just two minutes before the break when a free-kick from deep was delivered into the Town box, only for Mark Cadwallader to head it wide.
Whilst the elements certainly had some effect in the first half, they dominated the game in the second High winds swirled in the direction of the Denbigh goal with debutant Beattie truly being tested on his maiden voyage in a Denbigh shirt.
The half began as it would go on with long balls pumped into the Town half to put the backline under the cosh. The closest Llandudno went to pulling one back came six minutes into the restart when a long throw fell into the box before being directed towards goal, only for Beattie to claw it off the line
Wave after wave of attack came with Denbigh unable to clear their lines, and that isn’t anything against Town’s back four and ‘keeper, the wind simply wouldn’t allow them to A cross from the right struck the top of the crossbar but the home sides’ long punts forward struggled to stick with Denbigh happy to see them fly behind for a goal kick
With three minutes to go Llandudno finally had one back with 42 minutes of constant bombardment. A ball across goal found Cadwallader who bundled it home to give hope to the home side. With five minutes of injury time indicated, it took until the final one for the second when a loose ball fell to Alex Boss who smashed it into the back of the net to see the points shared.

Denbigh Town Reserves suffered defeat at Central Park against the league leaders despite a spirited display.
Tom Salisbury’s second half effort wasn’t enough as the visitors bagged two each side of half time
Liam Nash handed debuts to two new signings with goalkeeper Jack Moorley taking his place between the sticks, whilst Sam Tate returned to LL16
In a slow start it took 15 minutes for the first real chance which the visitors took well as Flint crossed from the right channel to meet Charlie Cottis to finish from close range. Town responded with a chance of their own as Sean James delivered a free-kick which was cleared as far as Tate, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.
On 26 minutes Tate popped up again on the left of the box, wrapping his foot around a low effort that whizzed inches wide of the near post Two minutes later it was the visitors who had an effort of their own as Ben Richards tested Moorley from the edge of the box, but the 17-year old was equal to it.
With 34 minutes on the clock the visitors doubled their lead when Moorley denied an initial shot from range before Cottis followed in for his and Flint’s second Moments later Town came millimetres from pulling one back when a ball over the top found Tate who lifted the ball over the keeper from the edge of the box, which dropped on to the top of the bar
Within five minutes of the restart Town did halve the deficit Morgan Fricker played a superb ball forward for Salisbury who raced through before squeezing the ball past the keeper from a tight angle. Two minutes later after some nice buildup Denbigh were close to levelling when James’ free-kick flew inches over the bar
Flint were still a danger and on the hour mark after some nice build-up play found Luca Filby who 18-yards out hit the base of the right post Seven minutes later Moorley was called into action making a sensational double save to deny a third.
Heading into the final 20 minutes Town were pressing as much as they could, as James made his way into the box from the right but was denied by the keeper On 72 minutes however their hopes of a leveller were dashed as an effort struck the Town post before substitute Dylan Owen hammered in the rebound.
The game was put to bed when the referee blew for a penalty having adjudged Fricker to have handled it inside the box, and Cottis stepped up to secure a hatrick and the win
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

This season has been Denbigh Town’s best ever Welsh Cup campaign, topped off by reaching the Quarter-Final for the first time in the club’s history Here we take a look at
how we reached this stage
Denbigh Town 4-2 Llangefni Town (3rd Round - 19/10/24)
After an initial early set back Town rallied well to book their place in the fourth round at home to Llangefni.
Jack Smith gave the visitors the lead on 12 minutes before Harrison Bellis hit a double just before the break. In the second half Nathan Brown netted a third before Ifan Mansoor applied pressure However, Paul Fleming’s stoppage time sealer sent Town through
Llanrwst United 0-3 Denbigh Town (4th Round - 16/11/24)
Denbigh Town put in a dominant performence at Llanrwst in November to score three without reply at Gwydyr Park.
Nathan Brown gave Town the lead after 15 minutes to take a one goal lead into the break With 12 to play Owen Davies grabbed the all-important second before Keelan Williams’ penalty made sure of it, as Denbigh reached Round Five for the first time since 1972
Denbigh Town 7-1 Llanuwchllyn (5th Round - 14/12/2024)
Dewi Llion’s Reds ran rampant in December with a seven goal win at home to Llanuwchllyn.
Nathan Brown grabbed the first on six minutes before Owen Davies scored twice in the first 23. Brown had a second of his own 15 minutes later to take a four goal lead into the break Davies had his hatrick on 65 minutes before Iwan Roberts buried a penalty, and Brown finished a trio of his own late on
Journey to Central Park
Llanelli’s high flying season has been complimented by reaching the Quarter-Final for the first time in 13 years.
They began their campaign with a 3-0 away win over Clwb Cymric before a 4-0 success against Pill AFC In December they faced Cymru Premier side Haverfordwest County with an Ethan Cann double securing a famous giant killing for Lee John’s side
Denbigh Town Ladies made it back-to-back wins recently with a 3-0 victory over Llanystumdwy.
A hatrick from Beth Kell saw the Ladies end the Group Stage of the Betty Pickering Cup with a win, but the Ladies will have to settle for the Shield where they’ll take on Welshpool Town.
Speaking of Welshpool, manager Aled Davies picked up his first win a week previous against that very side when Town ran rampant in a 12-0 victory at Central Park.
The Ladies are back here tomorrow with the visit of Berriew.
Next Five:
16/02: Berriew (H) 23/02: Welshpool (A) 09/03: Airbus (A)
Denbigh Town Football Club have moved into further stages of ground development work at Central Park with the progress of our new community facility.
Many regulars at Central Park, along with the many passing by during the week, will have observed changes to the ground both inside and out.
Work has been completed on the removal of the hedge at the ‘School’ end of Central Park, and fencing has now been installed as we begin to prepare to elongate the dimensions of the playing surface This is a necessity ahead of the 2026 UEFA U19 European Championships, alongside potential future JD Cymru Premier football.
Not only will this allow for the essential work at Central Park and as a result the tournament and topflight football, but for international matches to continuously return to Denbigh at an elite level for both Men’s and Women’s youth matches which have previously brought incredible players from around the world and large footfall to the area
The club has worked with key partners to survey the hedge and its ecological value which has been thoroughly assessed before allowing the club to remove it This has been conducted now to ensure no birds nest within it from March onwards, allowing us to safely bring it down
In other areas, the structure of the community facility is now clear to see with blockwork continuing to rise as we enter the final stages of the project.
The club looks forward to revealing further progress on and off the pitch in the coming weeks and months.
