Welcome to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Cymru North game against Penrhyncoch.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Penrhyncoch players, coaching team, Committee and supporters on their long journey here
It was good to see Dewi’s lads get three points last weekend here against Guilsfield as it was back in October since we had our last home league win. Let’s hope they carry on today in the same way with a victory
We had the 7-1 Welsh Cup home win over Llanuwchllyn in early December and this puts us in the Quarter Final of the competition for the first time in our history Our next home game is against Llanelli of the JD Cymru South and they will be stern opposition. This is the same level league as we compete in - Tier 2 of Welsh Football - and Llanelli currently stand second in their league, we know they have a strong pedigree
It will be a tremendous occasion on Saturday 15th February here at Central Park with a 2pm kick-off Please come down and support the team as they aim for the Semi-Final.
The full draw for the Quarter Finals is as follows;
Denbigh Town v Llanelli Town, Caerau Ely v Connahs Quay Nomads, The New Saints v Airbus UK Broughton and Cambrian Utd v Carmarthen Town
Work on our new Community building has started to motor after the Christmas break and the recent snow. We are still aiming to have it completed by the end of June. The blockwork is now well in progress, and we have also had concrete slabs laid down for the base of part of the new building It has taken quite some time to get to this stage as we had drains and ducts to lay before the groundwork can be completed
The new facility will be an excellent building not just for our football club but also for the local community as our function room will be able to be used for a variety of uses e g evening & day classes and functions such as birthday and christening parties. Please bear us in mind if you are aware of people who may be interested in our helping them in this way
You may be aware that Keelan Williams our wing back has undergone a planned operation early in the New Year Many of you have been asking of his progress and we’re pleased to say the operation was a success, with Keelan looking to get back into training with the lads within the next month. Our best wishes go to him in his recovery
Dewi’s squad has been strengthened over the transfer window and we all know how injuries and illness can affect the team. As we move into the final eleven games of the season, we want to consolidate our position in the league which I feel is imperative for the success of the Club
Welcome back to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Cymru North game against Penrhyncoch.
It follows on from last week’s game against Guilsfield where we came out 3-2 winners thanks to a late Alfie Vaughan goal The opposite happened to us in the corresponding game at Guilsfield last November when they nabbed an injury-time winner
Last weekend we knew we needed a win having not won a league game at home since October The lads went into the game on the front foot and dominated the first quarter of an hour of the game during which Alfie scored his first of the afternoon, pouncing on the crossbar rebound from Nay Brown’s free kick.
For some reason, we then allowed Guilsfield into the game We seemed to take our foot off the pedal and weren’t moving the ball as crisply and as fast as we had talked about and worked on in training This allowed the opponents to get back into the game and within the space of two minutes, we were 2-1 down through some great interplay by Guilsfield.
Thankfully just before halftime Ben Lockley got us our equaliser from a powerful header The second half was an even contest and we spiced it up with some substitutions which paid off. Iwan Roberts, Dan Clarke, Tom Salisbury and Gabriel Hinchcliffe came on and this fresh impetus gave us another dimension to our game. Our fitness seemed to pay off, and it was apt that man of the match Alfie Vaughan was on hand to head home Ben Lockley’s cross for our winner.
Once again, it was notable that key substitutions made at the right time of the game can have telling results It’s been our policy to use the squad as our team and not just the starting eleven All players want to be in the starting eleven but by being able to change formation and planning within a game by using squad players, I see this as key these days to winning games
Have a look at the league table in today’s programme. At the time of writing, last weekend’s result shows a table with us in 10th position on 24 points However, Mold are in 7th position on 26 points and Ruthin in 14th position on 20 points. So, there is not much between eight teams as we go into the final third of the season With three teams to be relegated at the end of the season we are all battling for points and it’s looking to be a keenly fought contest to avoid the drop.
Today’s opponents Penrhyncoch are just below us and had a good 4-2 win last week against Prestatyn with experienced striker Geoff Kellaway scoring a hat-trick. When we travelled to Cae Baker back in August we went down 4-2 after the hosts took a 3-0 half-time lead It was so difficult trying to peg back that sort of lead, despite us getting two in the second half from Nathan Brown’s brace.
\ We’ve learnt from that day that we have to stop conceding early goals which means full concentration from all players from the start
I’m looking for another three points this afternoon. Thanks so much for your support.
Denbigh Town bagged their first points of 2025 as Alfie Vaughan struck a brace at both ends of the game to become Town’s late hero.
Vaughan thumped Denbigh ahead with just six gone before two goals in the the space of as many minutes saw Guilsfield take the lead Ben Lockley managed to head Denbigh back level before Vaughan nodded one home himself with three minutes left to play
It ends a run stretching back to October without a home league win, ends a three game winless run and bags the first points of 2025
Town made an enforced change to the XI that faced Holywell last time out with Kyle Cooper coming into the side for the suspended Sion Jones Meanwhile new signings Danny Clarke and Sean James had a place on the bench
Denbigh began the game superbly and put pressure on the visitors early On four minutes Owen Davies broke down the right before feeding the ball inside to Nathan Brown who was chopped down on the edge of the box From the resulting free-kick Brown stepped up to fire the ball on to the crossbar before Vaughan followed in to grab his first goal for the club
Looking for a second Town continued to put the back four under the cosh when Brown forced goalkeeper Luke Evans into a stop whilst Sam Duffy had his powerful effort blocked two minutes after Denbigh opened the scoring. On 12 minutes Calum Butler made a tremendous run from deep, before finding himself on the left side of the penalty area and firing a shot wide.
However, Town couldn’t find the second goal and Guilsfield grew into the game. On 22 minutes a seemingly harmless ball into the box was missed by the backline and top scorer Jamie Hyne was able to finish from close range. Less than two minutes later the game was flipped on it’s head when more slack defending saw the ball fall to Iwan Matthews who fired past Aaron Jones
Now under pressure Denbigh needed to react and ten minutes later they found their way back via another set piece Brown’s corner found Lockley who bulldozed his way through to hammer home an outstanding header to take it to 2-2
Within a minute of the leveller, Guilsfield should have retaken the lead when a cross found Matthews whose cushioned volley from close range was lifted over the bar Denbigh themselves had a sight of goal on 38 minutes when a nice spell eventually found Duffy hitting one from the edge of the box but Evans saved comfortably
After a frantic first half it was all to play for with both sides coming out in the second period with the belief that they can take maximum points in the contest Eight minutes into the half Town almost took the lead via an unlikely source when a nice move led to Keiron Roberts’ effort being tipped onto the crossbar by the ‘keeper.
Five minutes later Denbigh won a free-kick from 30yards out with Cooper and Brown stood over it. The latter struck it towards goal forcing a fantastic save to deny a third.
The half appeared to flatline a little with chances extremely limited despite Guilsfield edging possession in the final third. Town introduced Clarke, Tom Salisbury and Gabriel Hinchcliffe in the final 20 minutes who injected life into the side, with Salisbury doing well with five left to play by winning the ball in the Guilsfield half, darting forward and laying the ball across goal for Clarke who was just inches short from putting it in the net. In the aftermath, Iwan Roberts - another substitute - picked it up on the left, and made his way inside before having an effort blocked, despite appeals for a penalty for handball the referee was unmoved.
Not to worry, just a minute later Lockley found himself on the right where he crossed for Vaughan who at the back post headed the ball home for a massive goal and a possible huge result for Denbigh
Suddenly after looking like the side more likely to take the lead, Guilsfield were suddenly forced to stay resolute as in the final minute of the 90 Salisbury again made his way into the box before forcing the keeper into a low stop
With four minutes added the mid-Wales side couldn’t find the all-important goal in stoppage time just as they’d done at Clos Mytton back in November, and so Town took a valuable three points at Central Park

Denbigh Town Reserves earned a hard-fought point on Wednesday night in a trip to Flint Mountain.
Liam Nash’s side took a 2-0 lead into the break via goals from Sean James and Danny Clarke but found themselves pegged back within 20 minutes of the second half.
Flint Mountain completed a turnaround on 79 minutes via some questionable defending but Tom Salisbury - celebrating his 17th birthday - netted the allimportant equaliser for Denbigh.
The Reserves were in action this morning away at The New Saints with further fixtures to be confirmed including the FAW Reserve League North League Cup.
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

Penrhyncoch Football Club was founded as recently as 1965 following a meeting in the Old Church School.
Initially the Club played in the Aberystwyth & District League and between 1965 and 1982 the Championship was won 9 times
The Club acquired a lease from Ceredigion County Council for Cae Baker in 1975 and the changing rooms were built in 1980 The Clubhouse was built by volunteers and was officially opened by the then Wales manager Mike England in July 1981 In 1982 the Club became founder members of the Central Wales League Division 2, where they won the Championship and were promoted to the First Division
In 1990 the Cymru Alliance was formed with Penrhyncoch being one of the founder members as the new pyramid took place It was a disappointing first season as the standard proved higher than expected To meet the new criteria a new 60 seater stand was built and barriers erected around the pitch It was during this period the Club established itself as one of the leading Clubs in the Cymru Alliance and finished a credible sixth in 1998
Due to the increased costs of travel the Club withdrew from the Cymru Alliance and rejoined the Spar Mid Wales League, where the Club was quite successful, winning the Championship in 2001/02 & 2002/03 In the Spring of 2004, the Club decided to accept promotion back to the Cymru Alliance if they finished high enough in the League A joint venture was formed with Aberystwyth Town F C as the Club could use their players to benefit both teams In 2004/2005 Penrhyncoch F C took their place back in the Cymru Alliance and in the first season had mixed fortunes, finishing fourteenth in the league, but reached the Final of the League Cup losing an exciting game to Bala
In the 1995/96 season, the Club managed by Kevin Lewis, reached the Final of the F A W Trophy, losing narrowly 2 – 1 to the reigning cup holders Rhydymwyn F C Unfortunately, Lee Jenkins ex Aston Villa was injured and his absence had a critical bearing on the result The teams goal was scored by current manager Gari Lewis
Since this time the Club has continued to punch well above its weight Until 2023 the Club has only spent one season out of Tier 2, bouncing straight back up by winning the League in 2015/16
The season 2023/2024 was very successful Under the management team of Gari Lewis, Aneurin Thomas and Iwan Roberts, the team won the Lock Stock Ardal North East and returned to the JD Cymru North The club also lost 5–4 to Newport City in the final of the FAW Amateur Trophy in Newtown.
