THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Central Park this afternoon’s match in the JD Cymru North game against Guilsfield.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Guilsfield players, coaching team, Committee and supporters on their long journey here

Work on our new community building has restarted after the Christmas break and last week’s snow We are still aiming to have it completed by the end of June. The blockwork is now in progress, and it will be great to see the progress made over the next month or so

The new facility will be an excellent building not just for our football club but also for the local community as our function room will be able to be used for a variety of uses such as evening & day classes and functions such as birthday and christenings. Please bear us in mind if you are aware of people who may be interested in our helping them in this way

With the Under 19s Euros coming to North Wales in June 2026 and Central Park being one of the chosen venues for games, we will have to do some work on our pitch dimensions Having spoken with UEFA and FAW officials we will have to extend the length of the pitch in the next close season to meet UEFA requirements This will involve us purchasing a strip of land of three metres behind the Myddleton College goal from Denbighshire County Council. We will then dig out the earth so that the pitch can be extended and still have space for spectators to walk around the perimeter of the pitch.

At the Denbigh High School end, we will also have to work on extending the length and this will involve the conifer hedge having to be removed and replaced with fencing similar to that which surrounds the existing three sides of the ground.

This will mean a lot of work in the close season Obviously, there is a cost involved for these alterations and we are looking to work with the FAW on funding to help us achieve the right length of the pitch so that UEFA will be satisfied

Fundraising for all the changes we are seeing is now a major part of the Club’s requirements One way you could help is by contributing to our Monthly Draw which has been running since 1999 It has helped raise thousands of pounds towards the running of the Club. To enter costs £4 per month which is paid by standing order The £4 buys you a number which is entered into our Draw which takes place once a month with there being one prize of £250. So, if your number is drawn you win! The Draw takes place on the first Sunday evening of the month at the White Lion Bingo nights in Back Row, Denbigh

In November we draw three numbers and have prizes of £250, £100 & £50 Should you wish to join the Draw and at the same time help the Club please ask any Committee member for further details or call Iwan on 07788 627819 Forms to join are available from the Red Cafe at any of our home games

Enough from me. It’s time to enjoy this afternoon’s game.

THE GAFFER

Welcome back to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Cymru North game against Guilsfield.

The recent poor weather has had a real effect on our fixtures and our match planning with our home game against Flint Mountain on New Years Day and then last week’s game at Caersws both being called off. It’s a frustrating time of year as lads just want to play, especially after training and preparing for games. It raises the question once again as to whether the league should have a winter break. But when do we have such a break as the poor weather can come about at any time from November until March. It’s a question I’m sure we’ll all be asking for many years to come and for the moment we have to carry on until the FAW and league tell us otherwise.

We all send our best wishes to full back Keelan Williams who underwent a planned operation just after the New Year. Keelan has made a major contribution to the team since joining us last summer and we look to have him back in training again over the next few weeks

I mentioned in the Holywell programme about us bringing in some additions to strengthen the squad. We made two signings the day before the Holywell game with Bobby Beaumont, a talented young central defender joining us from Flint Town Utd having had earlier spells on professional terms at Wrexham and Sunderland, and full back Danny Flanders signed from Connahs Quay Nomads and is a youngster I’ve been aware of for some time He is a strong pacy player with a great eye for a key ball Both made their debuts against Holywell

Two former players have also rejoined the squad with winger Danny Clarke returning from a spell at Rhyl and midfielder Sean James coming from neighbours Ruthin Both have done well for the Club in their previous stints, and I was keen to sign them as I know the attributes they possess on the field to make things happen

Our last game was here at Central Park a fortnight ago when we went down 4-2 against last years’ Champions Holywell Town. We had a great first half and deservedly went into the break with a two goal lead Bobby Beaumont scored a debut goal with a strike from the edge of the penalty area and Nay Brown’s well placed shot gave us some leeway.

However, our second half display left us wanting as we allowed the visitors to make a comeback We could have been three up as both Nay and Sam Duffy had shots well saved by the Holywell keeper early into the second half. We then took our foot off the pedal and started to coast, and Holywell made us pay by scoring two scrappy goals They were on the front foot after these and grabbed a further two late on to claim the three points.

It was a position we’ve found ourselves in on a few occasions this season Leading and in control only to succumb to the opposition getting the ascendancy and winning the game. Take the away game in early November against this afternoon’s opponents Guilsfield.

In that game we went two goals down only to claw our way back to lead 3-2 just after half time This time the game could have gone either way, but Guilsfield equalised and then got an injury time winner.

We’ve discussed these issues at length in training over the last fortnight and look to put things right this afternoon. However, we know it’s a tough game we face, and the lads know they need full concentration for the whole game to claim the three points with a win

TOWN COLLAPSE IN DEFEAT AGAINST THE CHAMPIONS

Denbigh Town 2-4 Holywell Town

Denbigh Town threw away a two-goal lead to suffer defeat in their opening game of 2025.

Despite a debut goal from Bobby Beaumont and strike from Nathan Brown to take a 2-0 advantage into the break, the visitors hit four in the second half to turn the game on its head.

Dewi Llion made three changes to his XI handing debuts to Beaumont and Dan Flanders whilst Calum Butler also started the contest. Meanwhile new signings Kyle Cooper and Elijah Beattie took a place on the bench

Denbigh began the game at a good pace and threaten for the first time on six minutes. Some nice work from Butler found Brown who in turn played through Owen Davies but the forward was denied one on one Debutant Flanders showed early glimpses of his ability when he drove down the right channel and looked to break into the box before being hacked down. Brown stepped up for the free kick but his effort rattled the left post

After threatening the Holywell goal Denbigh finally had their first and it came from a new face. A cross from the right was cleared only as far as Beaumont who hit it first time on the edge of the box, finding the bottom right corner Notable not only for the opener of the game, but he also becomes the 150th goal scorer for Denbigh in the second tier.

13 minutes later and the lead was doubled, Davies did well to trap the ball before finding Brown who spotted a gap from range and fired well into the bottom left corner to add to his tally for the campaign

Holywell did make inroads into the final third but Aaron Jones did well to deal with any balls coming into the box with no real efforts troubling Town Just before the break it could have been three when the ball dropped to Beaumont who with his back to goal attempted a bicycle kick that flew over the bar

Just moments into the second half Denbigh almost made it job done when Brown drew the keeper into a smart save via a shot from distance before minutes later Flanders broke well before finding Sam Duffy, the in-form forward struck from 25-yards forcing the ball to be tipped over the bar.

Despite being under immense pressure Holywell found a way back in what would be a dominant display in the final half an hour. A ball forward saw Jamie Breese beat Jones in goal before he found Jake Cooke who managed to scramble home the visitors’ first.

Just two minutes later on the hour mark a quickfire double was complete, Breese’s shot was initially stopped by Jones before Ilan Ap Gareth fired home fifteen minutes after coming on off the bench

Holywell almost led on 67 minutes when Breese fired just wide whilst Owen Davies forced Ryan Woods into a smart save

Finally with 75 minutes on the clock Holywell’s turnaround was complete Cooke burst forward before being denied by Jones but Ap Gareth was on hand to hammer home the loose ball for his second and the visitors’ third.

Denbigh’s second-half collapse was well and truly complete with six left to play when a corner was swung in and headed home at the near post by Cooke to make it four.

WELCOME BACK SEAN JAMES & DANNY CLARKE

Denbigh Town welcomed back two more familiar faces this week with the return of Sean James and Danny Clarke.

Clarke returns after a year away from the club where he has had spells in the Lock Stock Ardal North West with St Asaph City and CPD Y Rhyl 1879.

Clarke arrived at Denbigh in 2019 after time in the academy with Chester FC, going on to make 73 appearances for the club and scoring 18 goals as he lifted both the Ardal North-West and Ardal Northern League Cup titles.

Clarke moved on to St Asaph City last January before moving to Rhyl in the summer but his season was hampered by injuries. Clarke, now fit, returns to Central Park.

Meanwhile, Sean James joins for his fourth spell with the club from Vale of Clwyd rivals Ruthin Town.

He joined the club initially in 2014 spending three years with the club before switching between Denbigh and Llandyrnog United.

He spent a significant period out through injury having signed for Ruthin in the summer but now returns to Denbigh having previously scored once in 18 appearances for the first-team.

Welcome back, lads!

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.

The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.

The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s

Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles

After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years

The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.

In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.

Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

THE OPPOSITION GUILSFIELD

Ground: Clos Mytton

Capacity: 1,100

Nickname: The Guils

Founded: 1957

2023/24: 4th

Manager: Gavin Allen

The present club was formed on August 6th 1957. Mr.Bill Laker and several other men folk of the village got together to form a local side, with seven or eight local lads playing for surrounding villages it was felt that the village needed to form a team of its own.

The club entered the Montgomeryshire Amateur League and matches during this early period were played on local farmer's fields and during the summer months the committee and players would help the farmer with his harvest to cover the ground rent for the season

During the mid sixties the village doubled in size and the local Community Centre was built with room to accommodate a football pitch, which is where the club plays today Throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's the team was almost all local players of a good standard but honours eluded the club except for the occasional runners-up in cup finals

At the beginning of the 90's a grandstand was built and the dressing rooms refurbished at a total cost of £34,000 By now the team was starting to show potential and the 1994/1995 season saw the club win the Montgomeryshire Amateur League First Division The club took advantage of the FAW pyramid system and were promoted to the Mid Wales League and duly finished in a creditable 4th spot in their first season

The 2000/2001 Spar Mid Wales League campaign was brought to a premature conclusion following the foot and mouth crisis that broke out in mid February 2001 At the time of abandonment, Guilsfield were well placed in the league and fighting for promotion to the Cymru Alliance As a result of the merger of two existing Cymru Alliance League clubs (Llangefni Town and Glantraeth) an extra promotion slot was available and Guilsfield’s application to join the league for 2001/2002 was accepted.

In their first two seasons they finished in 15th place It was during our second season that Mike Barton was appointed as manager Barton soon got to grips with the standard of football in the league and began to strengthen the side This rebuilding led to Guilsfield finishing in sixth position in 2003/04 The next league campaign saw the side occupying a top half position throughout the campaign finally finishing in seventh spot Guilsfield’s highest ever league position culminated with a 4-0 victory against Tywyn/Bryncrug in the Central Wales Challenge Cup Final The 2006/07 season saw Guilsfield in a mid-table slot but disappointingly unable to retain the Central Wales Cup, losing to Llanfyllin Town in the final The 50th anniversary season (2007/08) of the club saw Guilsfield led by new manager Graham Evans The players went on a great Welsh Cup run after defeating three Welsh Premier League clubs in Airbus UK, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Caernarfon Town en route to losing in the Quarter Final in front of 500 spectators to Bangor City Guilsfield’s top scorer for the season, Tim Nunnerley was rewarded for a fabulous year by being named the League’s Player of the Year In the 2010/11 season, the club gained their first piece of silverware at second tier level by winning the Cymru Alliance League Cup after a great performance to defeat Porthmadog in the final held at Cefn Druids. During the season. Over the next decade Guilsfield went from strength to strength, not only maintaining their position in the second tier but thriving, finishing within the top eight in each of their last eleven seasons. The club’s record finish came when finishing third in 2014/15 which they replicated in 2020 before the season was cut short due to the pandemic, and doing so once again in their first season back The Guils finished last season in 4th and are looking for a top half finish once again this term
