Welcome to the fourth edition of DENFAIR! Over the next three days you will gain access to a particularly diverse spectrum of curated local and international brands as they come together to celebrate everything design and take part in DENFAIR to release their latest collections and connect with the industry. This year will feature a comprehensive showcase of work that spans furniture, lighting, object and textile to workspace and bathware design all complemented by a curated selection of contemporary art. A veritable culmination of the very best the world has to offer in design excellence, originality and innovation. The 2018 program encompasses a creative series of hospitality installations by famed designer Chris Connell surrounded by independent installations by SMEG, the DIA, Tom Fereday & Fiona Susanto and the American Hardwood Export Council. You will discover an exclusive Victorian showcase of the 2018 Good Design Award winners alongside our very own DENFAIR Awards presented in the Speaker Space Thursday at 6.30pm open for everyone to attend. Once again the Speaker program curated and hosted by design writer Nicky Lobo is set to push the boundaries of creative conversations with a sense of openness, engagement and deep listening involving some of Australia’s and International’s most sought after design influencers. A free to attend event for all visitors. Our passionate and dedicated team have worked for the past 12 months to deliver an exceptional and inspiring experience, second to none in attention to detail. The 3 day event responds to the ever-progressing ideas that lead contemporary design and celebrate the industry that we all cherish being a part of. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE has become our directive for this year and has driven our decision making to ensure we once again deliver a design event our industry can be proud of. Enjoy! The DENFAIR Team

SPEAKER PROGRAM CURATED BY NICK Y LOBO

The Speaker Space is home to a series of creative conversations, where the issues, challenges and opportunities of our design industry are discussed, debated and discovered anew. The themes this year place design, architecture and art in the wider realm of life, asking how our products, projects and creative passions play out not just within our fields, but also beyond. A diverse line-up of local and international, emerging and established speakers give voice to the multitudes of stories and experiences that shape us as a community. Join our conversations in the Speaker Space — free to attend over the duration of the event.

Responsibility in the Age of Urban Development by Theodore Kerlidis

DENFA IR | 14

Building eco-centrically is about placing the person at the centre of the building and the building in the centre of its ecology. Inherently, this style of property development takes patience and there are many conversations and listening practiced along the way. The days of brute force to gain selfish decisions are over as we move into an era driven by cooperation for the good of the planet. Rather than rushing and forcing decisions through tribunals, a better approach is to educate and lobby for decisions that are pro-environment and based on sound reasoning. And what about the impact to architectural design? It is now time for urban architecture to play a role in enhancing the natural environment. This style of design is not about creating an ego-centric design statement, but working in synchronicity with nature. It’s about carefully choosing sites for their inherent natural assets and unearthing hidden potential. As architects, we need to continually ask ourselves – are we doing enough? Is there more we can achieve? This is not a time in history where we can self-congratulate and become complacent. We have a significant role to play in the greening of our cities. It’s about leaving a significant part of a site’s available land for trees and ecology. It’s not an impossible It’s a simple philosophy - leave the earth in better shape that we found it, but in practice, how many follow through with these convictions? There are seemingly never-ending battles from all sides – the client, the Council, the regulators and the community. With so many urgently competing interests and the drive for greater yield, is it even possible to achieve an outcome that is truly eco-centric? Many feel powerless in the built environment and many just accept that compromising their principles is the norm. How-

dream as our first two projects have proven – we have left upto 50% of the available land as gardens and spaces for people, flora and fauna with our Eternity Life project in West Footscray awarded Land For Wildlife status.. Our vision is to create a movement that will influence architects and buyers to demand more. While we can all talk about the urgent need for living in a sustainable way, as citizens we need to take action. We decided to partner with DENFAIR due to our shared prin-

Found nestled amongst the exhibitor stands, visitors will arrive at the beautifully detailed spaces designed by famed Australian designer Chris Connell. With white as the brief and selected as the theme, the spaces reflect a simplicity and support the idea of negative space. Given the constraints of availability, materials and event installation timelines, the spaces showcase a broad cross selection of materials found in the architec-

L

L

ture and design industry. The resulting plan views of each of the spaces, which form a series of hieroglyphs, represent a place to assemble, reset and download; or just to meet with colleagues. Offering a different experience in each location, these spaces provide a sanctuary from the visual cacophony of materials and colour that make up the exhibitor offerings.

As visitors move from hieroglyph to hieroglyph they will find the materials used offer a diffused and translucent quality, while others offer total privacy. These installations evoke the desire to explore and discover, by virtue of glimpses into and out of these simple white forms. We encourage you to explore the nuances of each space as you make your way around the show, stop and enjoy a libation or sample the many food offerings.

She plays with the simplicity and restrictiveness of working in black and white, as it requires her to bring something more out of an image that wouldn’t usually be captured had colour been involved. Each piece can take up to 70 hours of solid drawing time. Her current works are highly influenced by the art-deco era and combine intricate pattern-work, bold graphic shapes and gold leaf detailing.
