Dialogue and debate is an important part of the culture
of any contemporary design fair and in 2017 DENFAIR is introducing ‘Speaker Space’ – an informal story-swapping destination for design professionals to listen and engage
in topics on and about design. Former editor of Habitus Magazine, Nicky Lobo, has applied her industry insights into a highly engaging talks program which, she says, will draw people together with the experience, position and motivation to bring about the broader awareness and practical solutions that will propel design into the future of Australia. Informal by design and with a lineup of local and international speakers, the Speaker Space series is free to attend and runs for the duration of the event.

Smeg Australia is an official partner of DENFAIR

The Dose Café by Smeg The Dose Café by Smeg captures the rich heritage of the founding Bertazzoni family and a tradition of leadership in design, craftsmanship and technological innovation. Showcasing the new Dolce Stil Novo range, the Smeg bar is made up of distinct floral arrangements by Glasshaus offset by clean, architectural edges and a dark, sleek palette – making reference to the flora and fauna themed motifs chosen by Smeg CEO Vittorio Bertazzoni in an ode to his love of the outdoors. The Dose Café by Smeg features tables and chairs by James Richardson Furniture and an Artedomus clad sampling bar from which to sample and enjoy local parmesan and prosecco sourced from Northern Italy for the full Smeg experience.

Garden Lounge by HUB Part-installation part-lounge, the Garden Lounge by HUB brings playfulness and colour to DENFAIR with Patricia Urquiola’s Tropicalia range for Moroso, supplied by HUB. Hanging daybeds, clustered armchairs and oh so enticing chaise lounges nestle into their forest-like background and garden surrounds installed by garden designer, Glasshaus. Be sure to take the time to immerse yourself in Patricia Urquiola’s unique and imaginative response to outdoor furniture!

f eatur e s Textile Café by Power to Make Contemporary producers of woven materials for interiors are busy exploring all sorts of innovative directions in new materials, processes and applications. In 2017, DENFAIR welcomes back international fabric houses Pelle Leather, In the Sac and Boyac, while eagerly awaiting the arrival of new exhibitors such as Austex, Shibori and 3Beaches. A little gem and place to stop and recharge is the Textile Café, offering visitors an intimate food and drink setting from which to admire the many brands that make up this boutique district. Supported by Mokum, Obodo, Ross Gardam and Eco Timber – and designed and made by Power to Make – the cafe structure exploits the structural integrity of timber and fixing details of traditional Japanese construction.

Kvadrat Maharam x Local Design The longstanding partnership of Denmarkbased Kvadrat and US-based Maharam is founded on a shared philosophy of design innovation and service excellence.
In fostering the talents of local designers and craftspeople, Kvadrat Maharam pays homage to a rich heritage of supporting the arts and creative expression and in DENFAIR 2017 the textile brand is teaming up with Local Design to tailor a celebration of Australian design and textile innovation at the entrance. Conceived by founder, designer and stylist Emma Elizabeth, the creative collaboration will fuse scenography, design and fashion to present unique colour and texture edits from the Kvadrat Maharam collection, bringing to life hero designer furniture pieces by Tom Fereday, Tom Skeehan and Dowel Jones.

Belle Restaurant & Oyster Bar At the center of the DENFAIR experience is the Belle Restaurant & Oyster Bar – a meeting place of food, design & industry – and an emblem of the world status of Australian interior design today. For the designer of this space, it is an opportunity to bring ideas to life in a temporary architectural setting and in 2017 DENFAIR recognizes multi-award winning Fiona Lynch Studio for its creative leadership, inviting the studio to partake in the creation of the Belle Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Combining a sophisticated restaurant, a laidback café and a lively yet intimate bar, Fiona Lynch Studio tapped into its hallmark artistic approach, adopting a palette of varied textures utilising Kobe Board, Brickworks, Laminex and Bishop Décor offset by tactile elements from Pelle Leathers and Zepel Fabrics and furniture by Cult.

BMW Art Bar In partnership with BMW, the Art Bar will become an exciting activation canvas for BMW’s new electric car model, the BMW i3. The BMW i3 is an urban car driven by pure electric power and customised for the requirement of sustainable and emission-free mobility. To convey this narrative, DENFAIR commissioned multi-media design studio ENESS with an interactive, graphic work that will explore notions of journey and distance. Floating above a stylish Smartstone centrepiece, the ‘story’ of green power and its capabilities will be captured through use of projection mapping, symbology and light. The BMW Art Bar will feature furniture pieces by Obodo and The SD Element.

s paces Front/Centre At DENFAIR we believe there is much to be gained from emerging designers who have ample energy for the vibrant future of design and who approach design problems with new modes of thinking reflective of the cultural and social conditions of the day. In 2017 DENFAIR is putting emerging designers at the forefront with Front/Centre – an initiative inviting representing entities across Australia to present the best and latest craft and design in their region. Proudly supported by Schiavello, DENFAIR is working closely with Craft ACT, JamFactory, Designed Objects Tasmania (DOT) and Workshopped in association with Australia Design Centre (ADC) – to provide a unique opportunity for designers at the early stages of their career while mapping a new frontier in Australian design.

Sound Lounge by Adam Goodrum DENFAIR 2016 Designer of the Year winner, Adam Goodrum, is this year directing his conceptual thinking this year to the Sound Lounge. In partnership with Woven Image, the installation also forms part of Imagination Partners – an ongoing Woven Image brand campaign that gives designers the opportunity to work with an open brief in order to exploit existing product in new ways and test ideas using manufacturing technologies. Adam’s response to working with Woven Image’s acoustic product EchoPanel – as well as themes around sound, enclosure and transience – marks an exciting interaction with the material as a spatial element and soundscape utilising the latest technology from sound partner, Bang & Olufsen. Standing as an installation inasmuch as a functional setting, the lightness of form and repetition of elements endeavors to create a visual representation of sound enhanced by lighting partner Rakumba.

THE BMW i3 – INTELLIGENT DESIGN

THE ART BAR

Every detail, every feature about the BMW i3 is designed for the pulsating life in the big city. Driven by pure electric power and customised for the requirements of a sustainable and emission-free mobility, the BMW i3 embodies an intelligent form of travel. Like any well-conceived design, the vehicle represents an integrated and harmonious concept where every detail has been optimised to its purpose - from the functionally dynamic exterior to the clean and reduced interior space.

The BMW Art Bar is a lively meeting place unique to DENFAIR’s contemporary art section, The Gallery. In keeping with its surrounds, the Art Bar forms part of a conceptually charged activation canvas for the BMW i3 and its long list of attributes around intelligent design. To connect this narrative to the Art Bar experience, DENFAIR commissioned multimedia design studio ENESS to produce a graphic work that will explore notions of distance and habitual travel through use of symbology, projection mapping and LED technologies.

MAPPING IT OUT What is a typical journey for drivers in an urban environment – to work and back, an evening out? How far do we travel in and around Melbourne? On a daily basis it sits at an average of about 39km per day, * less than one third of the BMW i3’s battery life! By studying typical maps and investigating ways to spatially express distance and motion, the ‘journeys’ of multiple BMW i3 user groups were used to reveal the BMW i3’s full charge potential. Separating the journeys into different planes and connecting them to numeric data created a varied and interesting aspect to the installation across a larger area. *Australian Bureau of Statistics

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR PARTNERS

bmw A leader in automotive design and innovation, DENFAIR is proud to be partnering with BMW in the presentation of the BMW i3 during DENFAIR 2017.

eness ENESS is a multimedia design studio working at the intersection of art and technology. With extensive experience and an eye for all things lightbased, ENESS combine varying disciplines including lighting, software, interaction design, product design, sculpture and architecture to achieve outcomes that are unique and unexpected.

smartstone As the leading destination for quartz surfaces, Smartstone emerged as the ideal partner for the BMW Art Bar centrepiece. Fabricated in Smartstone Azul Macaubus, the bar presents a striking surface of intense blues on a white-grey background, helping to create the visual synergy of beauty, movement and mobility inherent in the activation concept.

the sd element Australian design brand, The SD Element, combine the talent of local designers with the experience of Australian manufacturing company, Swiss Design. Rich, luxurious and inviting - the All Sorts range of lounges and ottomans will feature in the BMW Art Bar.

obodo Established in 2007, Obodo supplies high quality contemporary furniture and accessories. This year at DENFAIR Obodo has supplied the Factory Bar Stool by Sean Dix - a modern interpretation of the factory stool of the 30’s.

Collectively though, there are abiding themes – about control of our bodies, experiences of bodily detachment and enhancement, and the alluring promise that medicine can offer a condensed chemical pill to enhance the way we feel and behave, against our instincts and ‘true’ nature. It shopped that the mind and the body can be aligned.

My work combines a rational, democratic utility with an element of sculptural expression. There is a clear form and function in my products, but it’s important they also have feeling. I am interested in the awkward beauty that comes from something made by hand. I like to explore how imperfection can be introduced into an industrial process, to make something at scale that retains a sense of individual charm.
