Accommodation on Cottages on Edward can provide a wedding accommodation package that will be just as memorable as the ceremony itself. The boutique cottages, located in north Deniliquin, are set in an intimate and secluded part of town close to wetlands and the Edward River. Richard and Pat Fogarty provide a personalised service to make your wedding experience as comfortable and romantic as possible, a service you cannot get at a motel. The wedding package gives the lucky couple full access to the cottages before and after the ceremony, and also includes use of the perfectly manicured gardens for your wedding photos. And while you’re saying ‘I do’, your cottage is being set up for your return. Fresh

cut sandwiches and a bottle of champagne is left in your room for you to enjoy when you get back, and the cottage is cooled or warmed in advance for your comfort. Cottages on Edward offers guests two unique self-service accommodation options — ‘Gum Nut Cottage’ and ‘Kingfisher Cottage’. Both include homemade touches — lead lighting made by Richard and wrought iron features welded by Pat — and offer all the modern comforts of home. In the Gum Nut Cottage you will feel as though the red gums have been brought inside, with wooden accents and fantastic earthy colours. The Kingfisher Cottage has a Victorian era ambience mixed with the comfort of modern life. Cottages on Edward provide a delicious breakfast

the Edward

basket for all their guests, but as part of the wedding package the bride and groom will get a silver service breakfast. And with a late check-out, you’ll be able to enjoy the delicious cooked breakfast in style and comfort. The wedding package is available for just $210 and includes a 20 per cent discount voucher for your

next stay, which is valid for 12 months. If you want something more for your wedding experience, Richard and Pat are happy to tailor a package to your needs, including garden ceremonies. The Groom’s Guide

The more input a groom puts into his wedding day shows his bride how important the wedding is to him. It also allows you to put your own personal touch to the day. The following is some helpful information for the groom. The Speech: Traditionally

the groom makes a speech during the formal part of the ceremony. The speech should be planned well before the wedding to allow time to learn the words and lessen nerves. Try to incorporate the following into your speech: Thank yous – Take the time to thank your parents, your bride’s parents, guests who

have travelled and any people that have helped you both during the planning of the day. Your Bride – This is most important. Tell your bride how absolutely stunning she looks and how happy you are to be married to her. Storytime – Try to include a memorable story of you and your bride’s life together so far. It could be about how you met or how you proposed. The Look: Your outfit may be the only aspect of the wedding that can solely be yours to plan, so take the time to make it perfect. Try to incorporate your bride’s and bridesmaids’ outfits into your attire. Your groomsmen’s shirts, ties or cravats can be the colour of your bridesmaids’

dresses, and yours can be the same as the bride’s. Before you decide on the outfit make sure you try on more than one. The Weather: Take into consideration what the weather will be like on the day. The Little Things: Make sure that your shoes are polished, your hair is styled and you are wearing appropriate socks. The Bride: Try to make a sentimental gesture to your bride on the wedding day. Have flowers sent to her while she is getting ready or write her a love letter. The stress will be highest on the morning of the wedding and a nice gesture can make all the difference.

HAIR TIMELINE

THREE TO SIX MONTHS TO GO • Decide on your stylist. • Regular conditioning treatments are helpful to get your hair feeling and looking its absolute best, ask your hairdresser about the right one for you. • Finalise the length and colour of your hair and keep it trimmed/coloured regularly (final colour and trim two weeks before is best). FOUR TO SIX WEEKS TO GO • Book a trial at a convenient time, allowing one to two hours to find the ideal style (bring all ideas/ pictures, veil & headgear). ONE WEEK TO GO • Do not do anything different with your hair. Use all the same products as your hair is predictable to work with. Wash your hair one to two days before the wedding so it is clean but not too soft. The style will hold better. • Confirm times and room number/venue with your stylist so all details are correct. WEDDING DAY • Wear something which unbuttons and will not disturb your style. • Enjoy being pampered and stay calm.

IRST DANCE

Part of the dream of getting married is looking as beautiful as you can and moving across the floor like Cinderella. Why not take dancing lessons, or at least practice your dance before the evening. Anyone can dance, it just takes patience and determination. Here are some dancing tips to get you one step closer to a fairytale first dance: • Allow enough time to rehearse and form a routine, at least six weeks is recommended. • Allow time to practice between lessons, you will be surprised with the difference it makes. • Practice in the shoes

you plan on wearing on the wedding day as they may be difficult to move in and it will save you feeling unbalanced or getting blisters. • If you are wearing a hoop under the wedding gown wear it on your last two practices to see how you go with all the steps. • Be patient and kind to each other, it won’t work if you constantly argue or blame each other for doing the wrong step. • Practice smiling when you dance. This may sound silly but you will end up dancing on the day the way you practice it. If you have a frown or very serious face at practice, most likely that’s what you will have on your day.

EDDING

Blighty newlyweds Michael and Mellissa Norman went with a relaxed and surprise approach for their wedding in September, 2013. The couple, who have been friends since they were teenagers, were married in front of an intimate crowd of family and close friends in Deniliquin on September 21. That night, Mellissa held a ‘reverse’ surprise 30th birthday party. Her birthday guests were gathered at the Blighty Hall awaiting the birthday girl when she and her new husband turned up. ‘‘We really didn’t want a lot of fuss or expectation around our wedding, so it was actually kept a secret from everyone except the close friends and family who attended the ceremony,’’ Melissa said. ‘‘Our other friends thought they were attending my 30th birthday party at the Blighty Hall, which in fact was our wedding reception. ‘‘We had 90 guests and it was a night full of fun and laughter. ‘‘Sharleen Ball of Mayrung was the caterer and her food was a big hit with everyone. ‘‘The entertainment was provided by an Albury duo who a friend helped us book

at really short notice, and we all danced the night away. ‘‘Our MC for the night was former local Stephen ‘Rippa’ Marshall.’’ Michael and Mellissa were married at Deniliquin’s Cottages on Edward, owned by the couple’s friends Richard and Pat Fogarty. ‘‘We are so lucky to live near one of the most beautiful towns and the magnificent Edward River,’’ Melissa said. ‘‘Our wedding was held on a beautiful spring afternoon in September at the Cottages on Edward in Deniliquin in front of 35 of our closest friends and family. ‘‘We thought the Edward River would be the perfect location for our ceremony. ‘‘We chose Cottages on Edward because I have known Pat and Richard Fogarty for many years and I knew that they would go above and beyond to make it a very special and relaxing day for us.’’ Mellissa wore a champagne coloured gown purchased in Rockhampton and a specially made hairpiece from Leanne Waldron from Vintage Rose Bouquets in Tocumwal. Leanne also did Mellissa’s bouquet and a custom

boutonniere for Michael. ‘‘Because we wanted to have a small, intimate and informal wedding ceremony, we decided not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen,’’ Mellissa said. ‘‘We enjoyed a romantic week in Bali at the end of November for our honeymoon – it was the most beautiful place with very friendly people and we would definitely go back again.’’ The wedding was officiated by Deniliquin celebrant SallyAnne Dillon and captured by Zowie Crump of The Art of Zowie. Mellissa said the ‘surprise’ wedding was quite relaxed, saying it gave them the opportunity to fully explore what they wanted from the day. ‘‘Because the wedding was a big, big secret and not many people knew we were getting married, it really took a lot of the pressure off. ‘‘We kept everything really simple and were able to have a lot of fun planning our wedding. It really was everything we hoped for. ‘‘My advice to other brides and grooms would be to do it your way – it’s your wedding, but don’t forget to enjoy the experience as it’s the best day of your life.’’ The proposal was just as

memorable, Mellissa said. ‘‘Michael is such a romantic. ‘‘We were at a winery in the Hunter Valley, which he had organised as a treat for my birthday, enjoying a picnic under the stars with a band playing. ‘‘Michael had requested my favourite song and after the band had finished playing, he went down on one knee and proposed in front of everyone.’’ Michael and Mellissa were together three years before they were married, starting out with a long distance relationship. ‘‘Michael and I have been friends since we were teenagers and three years ago we realised that our friendship had developed into something much more. ‘‘The only problem was that I was living in Toowoomba and Michael was living in Blighty. ‘‘So we started seeing each other without actually being able to see each other very often. It wasn’t long before we realised, though, that the distance between us was too much. ‘‘Six months later we were living together in Blighty.’’ Mellissa is the daughter of Gino and Sharon (dec) Harley of Wagga and Michael is the son of Janette and Greg (dec) of Finley.

CONNOR

Samantha and Chris O’Connor were very hands on with their wedding in February, 2014, and they say every moment was worth it. The couple created a lot of the furniture and accessories for their wedding with help from family. ‘‘Chris’s parents Peter and Debbie did a lot of the preparation – they were just amazing,’’ Samantha said. ‘‘They worked endlessly for months leading up to the wedding. We all did a lot of painting. ‘‘Chris made the tables for the reception out of old doors, and we also used some electricity wire spools as tables as well. ‘‘Peter made signs starting 9km from Deniliquin leading out to their property ‘Benarca’ where we were married.

‘‘We collected wooden chairs for a long time and painted them all white for the reception, and we hired the rest from Party Hire in Deniliquin along with the marquee. ‘‘It was busy leading up to the wedding because we did do it all ourselves. ‘‘A few days before the wedding everyone was really

EDDING

stressed, even though we were pretty prepared, but none of that matters now.’’ Samantha and Chris chose a spot next to the Edward River at ‘Benarca’ for the ceremony, which was officiated by Deniliquin celebrant Cassie Biggs. Samantha’s brother Ryan Wharton played guitar as his sister walked down the aisle,

after she arrived in Lex Kirkby’s classic 1939 p8 Plymouth with her father Rodney. Samantha’s gown was custom made, incorporating features of several dresses she had seen pictures of. Created at a boutique in Melbourne, the gown featured a sweetheart neckline, shoelace straps, French lace and a georgette overlay. She

wore a band of flowers in her a hair, which she made herself along with other ones for her bridesmaids. Wearing cream Bettina Liano dresses, her bridesmaids were her sister Sophie Wharton, friends Tiffany Horton and Tegan Arnold, and the couple’s 2½ year-old daughter Grace. The girls wore pearl bracelets and earrings, which were gifts from the newlyweds. The couple’s one year-old son Jimmy was also included in the bridal party as one of Chris’s groomsmen. Other groomsmen were his

brother Jason O’Connor and friends Alex Schultz and Dave Jarrott. The cocktail party style reception was held under a marquee at the homestead, and was catered by Deniliquin’s Pam Ellerman. Samantha said Pam worked in with the theme of vintage and rustic, creating aprons for her wait staff to match the wedding decor. Pam’s husband Ashley also helped in the kitchen. Entertainment on the night was provided by Bendigo band Entourage, and former

local Tim Roebuck was MC for the couple. Samantha and Chris have known each other most of their lives – their mothers, Karen Wharton and Debbie O’Connor, have been friends for many years. Five years ago their friendship developed into something more and Chris proposed when they were on a family holiday in July, 2013. ‘‘We were in Cairns for a family holiday and on a sky rail in a rattling cage above the mountains,” Samantha said. ‘‘I was giving Jimmy a bottle

and Chris had Grace on his lap when he asked. ‘‘We went and bought a ring the next day.’’ Samantha and Chris honeymooned directly after the wedding, spending a week in Bali ... without the kids. Having had her dream wedding, Samantha says the best advice she can give other couples is to ‘‘relax’’. ‘‘Try not to stress and try to take it all in on the day. ‘‘It all goes so fast and you have to try and relax and have fun.’’

Jacqui has also now moved into stocking and distributing the new skincare range Luminesce by Jeunesse, derived from stem cells. After getting married herself in 2013 in the Riverina, she understands the need for quality products and quality work in the lead up to your wedding and on the big day itself. TORING YOUR GOWN

DO • Use acid-free tissue between the folds of the dress and in the bodice. This will prevent wrinkles and folds. • Remove shoulder pads or anything else made with foam. Foam deteriorates over time and will damage anything next to it. • Remove plastic or metal buttons, buckles or pins. • Wrap your gown in muslin. • Store your gown in a cool, dark place. • Keep your gown away from light. • Occasionally take your gown out for inspection. Stains can sometimes show up days or weeks later.

• Ask to see the dress before it is packed for storage. That way, you can make sure all the stains have been removed. DON’T • Pack your gown near mothballs. • Store your gown in a plastic bag. The chemicals released when plastic breaks down can destroy your gown. • Store your gown in a hot or a damp room. • Hang your gown for longterm storage, especially by the shoulder seams. They can sag and stretch. • Completely seal the box. Allow some air to circulate.
