You are what you eat...

We all need food as fuel to survive. However how does what we eat really affect us, from our weight to our wellbeing. Well it is well known that eating fruit and vegetables, which are packed with nutrients (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre) help us maintain a healthy weight by keeping us fuller for longer. It’s recommended that filling half your plate with vegetables and fruit at every meal is a great way to sustain a healthy balanced diet. Also swapping excessively sugary snacks for healthy sugars such as fresh fruit, nuts or vegetables will also benefit you throughout the day.

Don’t fear the carb! For a long time carbohydrates have been misunderstood as a bad dietary choice when trying to be ‘healthy’. However carbohydrates are healthy and your main source of energy. Make sure when you eat carbs that it’s at your most active part of the day, for example before a workout. Think about what carbs you’re eating, porridge oats, potatoes and rice are great sources of good quality complex carbohydrates. Controlled

Eurovision in the key of Celebration

The Eurovision Song Contest

2023 was the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Liverpool, United Kingdom, after Ukraine, winner of the 2022 contest with the song "Stefania" by Kalush Orchestra, was unable to meet the demands of hosting the event due to security concerns caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking after the result was announced, Loreen said: "This is overwhelming. I'm so happy and so thankful. This is for you".

Her victory means that Sweden will now host next year's competition, 50 years after ABBA's victory with 'Waterloo'. It was the ninth time that the United Kingdom had hosted the contest, having previously done so in 1960, 1963, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1982 and 1998.

Eurovision 2023

The eclectic, extravagant event honored war-torn Ukraine's spirit of resiliency as it stuck to the 2023 contest's theme, "united by music," held at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England. Traditionally, the host country is the winner of the previous year's event. But since last year's winner, Ukraine, is in the middle of a war, 2022 runner-up Britain is hosting this year's event on its behalf. Loreen, sandwiched between illuminated platforms, reeled on stage as she belted the lyrics to her anthem - "You're stuck on me like a tattoo-hoo-hoo." The performance tended toward a more classic pop pick for a contest that has in recent years favored the bombastic and fantastical act.

Sweden and Ireland are also now tied with the most Eurovision wins in the history of the competition, with seven each.

The win makes Loreen only the second-ever contestant to win Eurovision twice following her victory in 2012, and the first woman to do so. The only other person who has won Eurovision on more than one occasion is Ireland's Johnny Logan.

Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, known professionally as Loreen, is a Swedish singer.

Representing her country, she won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and 2023 with the songs "Euphoria" and "Tattoo" respectively.

In April this year, 42,906 people toed the start line of the London marathon. Whilst the race winners, Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei, finished the run in 2:02:37 and 2:18:20 respectively, the vast majority of runners took four to four and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course. The ballot for entry to the 2020 race has already closed, with the expectation that over 415,000 people will have applied to run. But the popularity of running is not restricted to the marathon distance: park runs are also booming. Organised by volunteers, the movement offers free, weekly, timed 5k runs in parks across the world. In May 2019, over 600 events were hosted in the UK each week, with approximately 154,000 runners taking part. But why? What makes thousands of people drag themselves out of bed to head to the park

Technological advancements and deskbound jobs mean we live in a world that is increasingly sedentary, yet research is continually demonstrating the need to be physically active if we wish to live into our twilight years. Physically, there are numerous benefits attached to the humble run.

Health

A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that runners have a lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease when compared to their nonrunning peers. Regular running, at any pace,

strengthens the heart muscle and renders it more efficient. A healthy heart means improved blood flow around the body, a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). Whilst running, the body works harder than it does when at rest, burning more fuel to support the increased action. Such an increase in calorie consumption can help with weight loss, combatting obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty lived disease and some cancers. At the same time, pounding the pavements strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Going for a run works all the muscles in the legs and requires the runner to engage their core for stability. Strong muscles stabilise the joints and reduce the risk of injury in daily life. As a weight bearing exercise, running

tresses, and strengthens, the bones. This makes is particularly beneficial for women, who tend to lose bone density when oestrogen levels decrease during the menopause. If the physical gains alone do not convince, consider the positive impact on emotional health. The JAMA Psychiatry journal recently published a study which supports the theory that physical activity can be an effective prevention strategy for depression. A regular running schedule can improve sleep and relieve stress, both factors which have a knock-on effect on mental well-being. Moreover, increased physical ability can have a positive impact on body image and raise selfesteem. Who wouldn’t want that? Tempted but don’t know where to start? Try the Couch to 5k programme, offered by running clubs across the UK and available via a range of apps.

What is Couch to 5K?

Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks.

Santorini A Greek excursion in pictures.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades is ands in the Aegean Sea. Back in 1450 BC, a massive volcanic eruption caused the middle of the isle to collapse. It left a steep-edged crater known as a caldera peeping above the waves, which today is a spectacular sight from the island’s clifftops. Greece’s hot weather means a long summer season during which to enjoy the views. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.

Santorini is Greece at its traditional best. Thira, the capital, is a popular place to stay – it’s perched on top of the caldera rim overlooking the Aegean. And the northern town of Oia, which also has a spot on the caldera, is the best place to see the island’s famous sunsets.

The east coast

Stay on Santorini’s east coast, which doesn’t face the sunset, and you might find your money goes a bit further. Plus, from Kamari

and Perissa, it’s only a 20-minute drive to Thira, where you can watch the sun go down –so you get the best of both worlds. Kamari and Perissa line up some great beaches with silky black sand – a legacy of the island’s volcanic past. Kamari’s sweep boasts Blue Flag status, while Perissa comes with a good helping of watersports.

Santorini’s volcanic sands

You won’t find beaches in the usual colour in these parts. Instead, striking black pebbles and dark-grey sands circle the island. And they’re framed by steep, craggy cliffs that were shaped by Santorini’s volcanic beginnings. Just so you know, Thira, one of the island’s main resorts, is perched high up on the caldera, so you won’t find any beaches there.

The big beach

Kamari is one of Santorini’s most popular places to stay, and that’s largely down to its beautiful Blue Flag beach. A dark mix of sand and pebbles, it’s over five kilometres long. It caters for holidaymakers with a backdrop of ice-cream parlours, bars, and restaurants serving up fresh-from-the-net seafood.

Despite the fact that only 15.500 residents live in the island, over 2 million tourists visit Santorini each year.

The northern village of Oia (pronounced “ee-a”) is undoubtedly the most popular place to watch the sunset in Santorini. One prime spot can be found near the old castle to the west.

A Santorini wedding is all about the setting, whether that’s perched atop a towering cliff looking out to sea, on the terrace of an ancient Orthodox chapel or the local winery, or simply on a volcanic beach. Everything about a Santorini wedding says ‘luxury’. If it’s a film star-style tying of the knot you’re aiming for, it simply has to be a wedding in Santorini.

Innovative equipment

The GT by Citroën features innovative equipment like enlarged air intakes at the front, a flat underside, and a mobile spoiler and air diffuser at the back. All these features play an active role in reducing lift and drag, pinning the car to the ground.

The GT by Citroën has flowing, taut lines, stretched to the extreme. The cleanly drawn sides, ribbed at the top, and the pearlescent shade of the bodywork enhance the car’s powerful look.

Performance first and foremost GT by CITROËN is geared to the world of motor racing, with its dynamic styling, sculpted lines and sharp graphics. The rear end is oversized, made exaggeratedly long in order to create an effect of retinal persistence. The idea is to make the concept car even faster visually. The white-to-grey gradation on the body side further underlines this impression of continuous movement.

Top-level driving

The cabin of GT by CITROËN, designed to seat two adults, expresses the grand touring vision behind this show-car. The on-board ambience allies premium, extensively worked materials with a more high-tech effect for the driving position. The layout of the low driving position was dictated by driving pleasure. The aim is for the driver to be able to concentrate on the road, assisted by a head-up display clearly displaying driving information.

Car Concept

The cabin of the GT by Citroën is designed to seat a driver and co-driver. It combines rich, premium materials with a high-tech driving position, inspired by the world of motorsports.

Styled to replicate a vehicle from the digital world, the GT by Citroën is an original take on a road car. It’s the result of a partnership between Citroën and Polyphony, designer of the driving simulation game Gran Turismo 5.

The large, wraparound windscreen flows seamlessly into the roof and into the back mobile airfoil with its exaggeratedly long shape. The fast-flowing lines create the impression of performance and continuous movement.

Pomp

The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, took place on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022 upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.

Coach ride

The royal couple left Westminster Abbey following their crowning ceremony in the Gold State Coach, a historic carriage that was constructed in 1762 and first used by King George III to travel to the State Opening of Parliament that year. The coach, which weighs four tons and was drawn by eight horses on the coronation day, has been used at every coronation since King William IV's crowning ceremony in 1831.

What is the regalia?

The UK is the only European country that still uses regalia - the symbols of royalty like the crown, orb and sceptres - in coronations.

Celebrity Guests in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla include charity representatives, foreign royals and political leaders. But perhaps surprisingly for such a traditional and historical event, a roster of celebrity guests from the world of pop culture were also in attendance.

The ceremony held at Westminster Abbey, with the King becoming the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned there since 1066. Queen Camilla was crowned alongside him before a huge parade back to Buckingham Palace.

Numbers

Members of the Armed Forces, frontline emergency service workers and people actively contributing to The King’s Coronation will be among the 400,000 people.

Over the Coronation bank holiday weekend, the nation spent an extra £3.22 billion on retail, hospitality, and travel and tourism, in addition to the £4.80bn usually spent over a May bank holiday weekendthat’s £8.01bn in total.

Antique

The Coronation Chair, also known as St Edward's Chair or King Edward's Chair, is believed to be the oldest piece of furniture in the UK still used for its original purpose. Charles was the 27th monarch to be crowned in it.

Prince Harry was pictured appearing to be beaming with joy and laughing with Princess Royal. The moment captured the attention of people watching the Coronation with many trying to read his body language.

Perception

With ongoing debates in the media about the royal Family and its place in modern Britain, attitudes towards the coronation are mixed. Whilst many people are still in full support of the royals due to its historic importance and the tourism it generates for the UK, some question the cost and whether there’s a need for a monarchy anymore.

Despite these debates, the majority of the UK do believe that the royal family is important (64%).

Catherine, Princess of Wales and Prince William were unsurprisingly voted the most popular members of the royal family. Surprisingly Prince Harry is ranked the third most popular member of the royal family, placied above his father.
