What’s your poison?...

A

lcohol influences many cultures in a variety of contrasting ways, from being an illustration of celebration to a sign of utter disrespect, depending on your personal, political or religious views. The type of alcohol we consume can also determine the occasion, time of day or region on the world we are in also. For example champagne is usually present during a celebratory time, wine in many countries is an accompaniment with a variety of cuisines, and cocktails or spirits are more popularly enjoyed in the evenings, also highlighting the social aspect alcohol has in many places around the world. Two of the most commonly known alcoholic drinks are of course, wine and beer and they have both evolved throughout time. The culture of wine in Europe predates the Romans; in ancient Greece, wine was praised by the likes of poets, historians and artists. However, wine was considered the privilege of only the upper classes. The Greek god of wine, Dionysus, represented not only the intoxicating power of wine, but also its social and beneficial influences.

‘Language is wine upon the lips.’

Wine making emerged in Europe alongside the expansion of the Roman Empire throughout the Mediterranean. This was when many major wine producing regions were established, many of which still exist today. Even then, wine making was a precise process that encouraged the development of different grape varieties and cultivation

by Sophie Fitzjohn. techniques. Barrels were introduced for storing and shipping also emerged; bottles were used for the first time during this period too. As wine production became more refined, the popularity of it also increased, and wine taverns became a familiar feature in cities throughout the Empire. As centuries passed , the art of wine making spread to France, Spain, Germany and parts of Britain. By then, wine was considered a crucial part of the daily diet. European appreciation of wine endured throughout the Dark Ages due to drinking water still being unreliable; therefore wine was the alternative to accompany meal times. It was during the 16th century that wine became appreciated as a more sophisticated option to beer. As wine products began to diversify, consumers began to value the concept of varying their drinking habits more as a result. Over the last 150 years, wine making has been totally revolutionised as an art and science, and will continue to do so throughout time. Beer is the oldest recorded recipe in the world, and dates back to the ancient Egyptians,

‘Oh good, it’s Pimms O’clock.’

as they first documented the brewing process of papyrus scrolls in 5,000 B.C. Beer finally made its way from the Middle east across the Mediterranean to Europe, where it became an integral part of life. Beer was valued due to its nutritional value and also because it was a safe alternative to drinking water. It was during the Middle Ages that what we think of as modern beer was born. Brewers had been using malted barley as the main source of fermentable sugar for hundreds of years at this point. The use of hops as a bittering and flavouring agent didn’t become common until around the twelfth century. Many herbs and spices were used before to balance the sweet malt flavour in beer. Brewers found that hops added a very pleasing bitterness and also acted as a natural preservative extending the life of the beers. Along with Northern European countries like Germany and Belgium, the British Isles also became a brewing centre, and many types of beer popular with drinkers today have their roots in Britain. Pale ales, porters and stouts have been brewed in England and Ireland for hundreds of years. Beer has been such an integral part of British life, alongside wine, as they’re drinks enjoyed with food and within social situations, and those two factors haven’t changed throughout time, even if the evolution of these two popular alcoholic drinks has.

Quote - “Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy.” Frank Sinatra “Age is just a number. It’s totally irrelevant unless, of course, you happen to be a bottle of wine.” Joan Collins

Living Colour Colours, shapes and shadows define the illustrative style of Malika Favre - Dennis Sterne.

M

alika Favre is a French illustrator and graphic artist based in London. Her works style could be characterized by pure minimalism within Pop art and Op art, where it sometimes described as ‘Pop Art meets Op Art’. She combines simple illustrations with geometric patterns and has developed a unique style of illustration by using positive and negative space and colours, elegant layouts, especially of the female body and the curves. The Champagne Like many leading vector illustrators, Favre seeks out an ideal form for each element within an image. What you don’t always get with other vector illustrators, however, is

such a skillful use of color, light and shadow. Although Favre’s black-and-white images rely on strong forms, it’s her color palettes that really pop off the page with a 3-D, almost cinematic quality. Her use of shadow is incredible, and she puts this down to the fact that she began drawing when she was three years old—and she has been doing so ever since. Long before vector graphics arrived, giving everyone the ability to construct images from geometric shapes, Favre knew how to look at light and shadow. She could draw the human body. She applies the same paring-down process to the light in her work as she applies to the lines in her work. With her tendency to minimize forms, it’s little surprise that Favre has a background in

graphic design. Before becoming a freelance illustrator in 2010, she had spent five years working at the seminal London design studio Airside. Founded by Nat Hunter, Fred Deakin and Alex Maclean, Airside was known for its colorful, vector-led campaigns, websites and animation work. Prior to that, Favre had studied digital media at the University for the Creative Arts Farnham in the United Kingdom and graphic design and advertising at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art in Paris. Her design training shows through not only in her graphic style, but also in her creative process. When a brief comes in, she does a lot of research, iterating on various approaches. She never looks at illustrations and always at photography. “The shittier, the better,” she says. Going forward, Favre wants to carry on working with editorial clients like The New Yorker and also to expand her online shop. With her style fully developed and with her dynamic use of color, light and shadow, she now feels her work can step away from flat surfaces and move into the real world.

“Having a deeper understanding of how light and shadow work allows you to decide which shadows are important and which ones aren’t,” she says. “If it doesn’t add anything, I take it out. I used to remove a lot in the beginning, but the more I do this, the more I know [from the start] what needs to be drawn and what doesn’t. But I still always end up removing something from most images.” www.malikafavre.com

Free the heart and soul from captivity and set new heights for the mind’s imagination.

F

reedom is defined as “the state of being free to enjoy political, social, and civil liberties. It is the power to decide one’s actions, and the state of being free from restraints or confinement. It is synonymous to the words liberty, privilege, deliverance, and independence.” Above all, after some contemplation, a broader look at what freedom means is perhaps best attributed to a mind set. If the mind atuned to being free then that at least it is a building block that points toward the activity of living more freely. After all the realisation of a fulfillment of the self certainly goes hand in hand with a joining of being free. Freedom to express one’s own preferred path or perceived destiny is intrinsic to well-being even. The ability or liberty to live out a birthright is the foundation upon which human rights are formed no less.

Superfood minus the

T

he term “superfood” is used a lot, but what does it actually mean? The official definition just means a food that is nutrient dense but watch out because that can mean different things to different people. Some of the foods that marketers and ill-informed journalists reference as “super” are anything but. Or, they just have mediocre nutrition that is over-hyped. A good example of an overrated food is kale. That may bring grasps, because it seems to be everywhere these days. You know the hype has climaxed when even McDonald’s is testing it out in Canada and Southern California. So why do we say kale is overhyped? Because the measure of its antioxidant content (known as ORAC) is 1,770 per 100 grams. Sure that’s good, but it’s by no means amazing. Red leaf lettuce is 2,426 and you don’t hear anyone talking about that. Top 10 What follows are the 10 best superfoods not based on hype, but rather on measurable antioxidant content.
