Welcome To Research Day 2021!
Keynote Speaker.................................................................................................................................. page 2
Thank you for joining us in celebrating the research conducted by students, postdoctoral trainees, staff and faculty members at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. This year’s first-ever online version of Research Day is a new format, but the variety and depth of scientific inquiry showcased today is as impressive as ever. We applaud this significant contribution to the school’s mission of advancing health through education, service, research and discovery.

Dating to the early days after our school was founded in 1875, our faculty and students have long been recognized for important research that advanced dentistry and many other areas of healthcare and science. Research Day’s origin is circa 1960 when “table clinics” were introduced to allow students to demonstrate their projects. In the 1980s, the format was expanded to what was known as the Student Research Forum. In 1999, various research initiatives were merged into the Research Day we know today. It is vital that we encourage and promote the groundbreaking science that is so important to our mission of educating the dentists, hygienists and scientists of tomorrow. Research Day 2021 will host 88 posters that highlight research in the school’s four themes: Cancer Biology & Therapeutics; Clinical, Population & Educational Research; Craniofacial, Skeletal Biology & Disease; and Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine. We are pleased that our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Arlyne Simon, a nationally recognized biomedical engineer, author and entrepreneur. A platform architect at Intel Corporation’s Health and Life Science Business Unit, she will address “Powering through Uncertainty.” Her presentation will be available to the public starting at 1 p.m. Today’s activities are the result of a school-wide effort that includes staff from the Office of Research and the many faculty, students and staff members who support this special event in the life of our school. We offer a special thanks to the companies who have partnered with us to sponsor this year’s Research Day. Go Blue Dental Research!

10 Research Day
Research Day 11
Weivoda Lab Margaret Durdan Description: Confocal microscopy of osteoclasts immune response to ovalbumin. Multinucleated osteoclasts (green) communicate by extending cellular appendages and respond to antigens with surface markers CD80 and MHCII (yellow). 12 Research Day
Research Day 13
Bottino Lab Arwa Daghrery & Marco Bottino Description: Scanning electron microscopy characterization of alveolar bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells on novel highly ordered nanostructured fluorinated CaP-coated Melt ElectroWritten scaffold for personalized bone tissue engineering. 14 Research Day
Research Day 15
Ono Lab Shawn Hallett & Noriaki Ono Description: Fgfr3-labeled chondrocytes and osteoblasts (red) are distributed throughout the cartilaginous growth center synchondroses in the cranial base. Col1a1+ osteoblasts (green) dispersed throughout the basisphenoid bone are surrounded by cell nuclei (gray). 16 Research Day
Research Day 17
Kohn Lab Eric Madsen and David Kohn Description: High magnification scanning electron micrograph of the surface of biomimetic apatite. This carbonated hydroxyapatite mimics the natural composition of native bone mineral and can be precipitated in thin films on biodegradable polymers to form scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. 18 Research Day
Research Day 19
Tenuta Lab Livia Tenuta Description: Determination of fluoride concentration in 100 nanoliter drops of dental biofilm fluid. Samples are applied on the surface of a fluoride electrode using micropipettes. A micro reference electrode is shown touching one of the drops. Analyses are conducted under mineral oil (to avoid evaporation) with the aid of a stereomicroscope. 20 Research Day
Research Day 21
Mishina Lab Jingwen Yang & Yuji Mishina Description: Neural crest cells (red) migrate to populate a head of day 9 mouse embryo. Neural crest cells are labeled by R26RTdTomato with P0-Cre as red. pH3 immunostaining (green) reveals proliferating cells, DAPI stains nuclei (blue). Top, posterior, bottom, anterior. 22 Research Day
