WELCOME Welcome To Research Day 2022! Thank you for joining us in celebrating the research conducted by students, postdoctoral trainees, staff and faculty members at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. This year we are welcoming back our exhibitors and sponsors in a modified in-person Research Day. We look forward to reviewing the variety and depth of scientific inquiry showcased today and have the confidence it will be as impressive as ever. Research Day provides an opportunity to showcase the significant contribution to the school’s mission of advancing health through education, service, research and discovery. Laurie K. McCauley
Vesa Kaartinen
Dating to the early days after our school was founded in 1875, our faculty and students have long been recognized for important research that advanced dentistry and many other areas of healthcare and science. Research Day’s origin is circa 1960 when “table clinics” were introduced to allow students to demonstrate their projects. In the 1980s, the format was expanded to what was known as the Student Research Forum. In 1999, various research initiatives were merged into the Research Day we know today. It is vital that we encourage and promote the groundbreaking science that is so important to our mission of educating the dentists, hygienists and scientists of tomorrow. Research Day 2022 will host 94 posters that highlight research in the school’s four themes: Cancer Biology & Therapeutics; Clinical, Population & Educational Research; Craniofacial, Skeletal Biology & Disease; and Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine. We are excited to welcome back over 18 companies who have partnered with our school as exhibitors, sponsors or advertisers in supporting student research. Collectively, we make a difference! Our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, the newly appointed Deputy Director of the National Institute of Health. Dr. Webster-Cyrianque’s research focus is on viral oral infections in immunosuppression and cancer as well as microbiology viral pathogenesis and clinical translational oral medicine. She will address “Oral Health for All: Opportunities for Improvement and Understanding.” Her presentation will be open to the public starting at 1 p.m. in the Kellogg Auditorium (G005) at the School of Dentistry. Today’s activities are the result of a school-wide effort that includes staff from the Office of Research and the many faculty, students and staff members who support this special event in the life of our school. We’d like to thank the students from the American Dental Association (ASDA) for their support with hosting. We offer a special thanks to the companies who have partnered with us to sponsor this year’s Research Day. Go Blue Dental Research!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, DDS, PhD Deputy Director, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bethesda, Maryland
“Oral Health for All: Opportunities for Improvement and Understanding” Dr. Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque is the deputy director of National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health. An accomplished clinician, researcher, and leader, Dr. Webster-Cyriaque had previously served as a faculty member at the University of North Carolina (UNC) schools of dentistry and medicine for more than two decades. As a tenured full professor at UNC, Dr. Webster-Cyriaque also served as the attending on clinical service at the UNC Hospital’s dental clinic. While there, she led research into a potential etiologic agent for salivary gland disease in patients living with HIV, assessed the oral microbiome and its implications for cancer-causing viruses, and studied the impact of the oral microbiome and oral health on HIV outcomes. In addition to her research, Dr. Webster-Cyriaque has held leadership roles as the chair/vice chair of the Oral HIV/AIDS Research Alliance, as research director at the National Dental Association Foundation, as director of postdoctoral CTSA training, along with multiple roles within the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the International Association for Dental Research. Since 2004, she has led the UNC Malawi project and provided assistance in founding Malawi’s first dental school in 2019. Dr. Webster-Cyriaque earned her PhD in microbiology/immunology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1998, her DDS from SUNY Buffalo in 1992, and her BA in biology and interdisciplinary social science from SUNY Buffalo in 1988

Pacific Dental Services The PRIVATE PRACTICE +® model What does Pacific Dental Services do? Founded in 1994, Pacific Dental Services (PDS®) is one of the country’s leading dental support organizations, providing support to owner dentists that allows them to concentrate on clinical excellence and the highest levels of cost-effective comprehensive patient care. How many offices does PDS support and where are they located? Today, our growing company supports more than 850 practices in 26 states. Career opportunities are available across the US with at least 80 PDS-supported practices opening every year. What is PRIVATE PRACTICE +? The PRIVATE PRACTICE + model provides supported autonomy that allows dentists to concentrate on clinical excellence and the highest levels of cost-effective comprehensive patient care while PDS provides the support structure for the business functions. What are some of the benefits of PDS-supported practices?
Who does the decision making for the practices? Dentists have complete autonomy in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical treatment of their patients. Mentorship and support, if needed, is provided by the owner dentist and peer associate dentists. PDS provides the business support to help run a successful practice. What continuing education (CE) opportunities are available to PDS-supported clinicians? All clinicians supported by PDS have the opportunity for life-long learning and mentorship through the PDS University™ – Institute of Dentistry. It is the largest CE program offered by a dental support organization with over 600 hours of continuing education. Introductory, advanced, and mastery level courses are offered for 30+ disciplines, including CEREC CAD/CAM digital dentistry, patient communication, diagnosis and treatment planning, clear aligner therapy, implant placement, and much more. The subject matter for each course is rigorously developed and taught by both PDS-supported faculty clinicians and key industry experts to meet our best-in-class standards.
Owner dentists have control of clinical decision making, all while boosting income, reducing risk, and rediscovering work/life balance. Additional benefits include: •
