Far from the madding crowds
It’s rare that a new build - let alone a first attempt at creating a new dental surgery - hits the mark, but Maddingley Dental Care in a newly established outer Melbourne suburb near Bacchus Marsh does exactly that.
Maddingley has the appearance of an “instant” suburb with its neat rows of brand-new houses with recently established lawns and gardens perched on top of low hills 60km west of Melbourne.
Despite its “newness”, Maddingley has quickly developed into a community with lots of services for young families, including top schools, shopping, childcare, cafés and restaurants.
Local residents can now also get first class dental care thanks to the new practice located adjacent to the 24-hour upstairs gym. Stylish and modern, the Hamptonsinspired Maddingley Dental Care makes going to the dentist something to look forward to.
Practice principal, Dr Kanwaljit Singh, has worked for some years in a corporate practice in another Melbourne suburb and decided to fill a gap in this flourishing new community by branching out and establishing his own practice at Maddingley.
By David Petrikas
Calling on the advice and assistance of a project manager from One Build Group in Melbourne and a team of specialist local tradesmen, Dr Singh mapped out a brief for a spacious practice with room to grow.
He also consulted early on with equipment supplier Henry Schein via their local equipment specialist, Rebecca Reilly, to ensure the practice also had the latest dental equipment to support his needs.
Given the range of services, including general and cosmetic dentistry, clear aligners, extractions and implants, Dr Singh wanted something “classier and comfier” than the run of the mill practice.
Design was important to not only blend in with the modern vibe of the surrounding development, but to transport patients beyond a cold, clinical setting to more of a haven, even a ‘beauty spa’ in feel.
This has been achieved with a spacious layout and thoughtful design employing high-end materials and finishes, including “V” joint style wall cladding in off-white and herringbone timber grained flooring evoking a Hamptons-like feeling.
A marble reception desk beneath a curved drop ceiling with striking round gold pendant light and backlit black signage behind, make a striking first impression.
The reception and waiting room is furnished with softly upholstered curved back chairs looking onto the marble finish reception desk. It also has a view of a large flat screen TV located in a shallow dark blue nook. Recessed shelving is set into the adjacent “V” joint wall panelling which features round milk glass wall lights.
Light wall colours, together with timber slat privacy nib walls and more round wall lights along the hallway continue the theme, while keeping the space light, clean and bright.
The corridors are generously sized and together with glazed walls and doors into the surgeries and offices off to each side, allow natural light to flow through the building.
Being a larger space, Dr Singh was keen to “soften” the look with designer décor and after initial discussions with the designer and project manager, was happy to entrust them to go ahead and complete the fit-out.
To add interest, the surgeries feature vivid wallpapered feature walls, while the A-dec 400 dental chairs have been sympathetically upholstered in on-trend dark blue sewn upholstery.
The sewn upholstery looks particularly plush compared to many conventional chairs and is also a very comfortable option for patients, according to Henry Schein’s territory manager Rebecca Reilly who assisted Dr Singh with the equipment selection.
Dr Singh said the A-dec dental chairs were great for patient comfort and had a really smooth recline action. “I looked at other chair brands when visiting the showroom and I liked the upholstery on the A-dec more and it had all the functions I needed.”
However, for Dr Singh, the key determinant in the choice of dental units was reliability.
“Reliability is very important to me. I’ve worked with A-dec in another practice and we didn’t have to get the technician to fix the chairs for six years which is very impressive.
“The A-dec 400 chairs are very modern looking and ‘high tech’ in design and suit the look of my new surgery which is also very modern,” he said.
They have also been a big hit with patients who have often commented on the comfort of the dental chairs.
Dr Singh also purchased matching A-dec dentist’s and assistant’s stools to support the entire dental team.
The combination of the design, décor and modern equipment has created somewhat of a haven, worlds away from your average “clinical” practice, supported by a welcoming and very experienced dentist and friendly support staff.
Not surprisingly, the local community have got behind the new practice which is open for extended hours to cater for those returning from the long commute to Melbourne and allows appointments after work and school hours.
